Aang has to be one of the least popular protagonist I have seen on ao3. Out of all the main characters who appeared in season 1 and beyond (aamg, Katara, Sokka, and Zuko) aang has the least stories. I have never seen that happen to a main character before. Aang has like 13,000 stories and he is a side character in a majority, so it makes me think, why do so many people argue aang is such a great main character when he seems to be the least liked even by his fans.

This isn't me trying to do some popularity contest, it just seems like even fanfic writers can't do anything interesting with his character, which is sad because he has a lot of potential to be an amazing character.

Child who lost everyone he has ever known to war and time, waking up a hundred years later with the weight of this new world on his shoulders while still grieving his previous life, is such an interesting character, and the show did nothing with that and so neither did the fans.

You know what show did that premise justice? Futurama.

I think Aang's lack of attention comes down to him being ultimately a boring character. Yes, the premise of Aang had potential, but then Bryke turned him into a Gary Stu. And not even a particularly good Gary Stu. I think the lack of fics centering Aang have few explanations. Making Aang a more interesting character would take a lot of work. A lot more than people who aren't his biggest fans are probably willing to put in. It's easier to treat him like a side character, because frankly, that's what he should have been.

Second, fans who do like Aang- like his canon story and his canon ship- probably don't have a ton to add. I think that's not uncommon with a lot of canon ships. Most of my ships have been canon and although I have written for those shows, I'm a lot more prolific with Zutara- my one non-canon ship. I sincerely doubt I'd still be this invested if Zutara were canon. I'd still love them, but the same way I love Usa/Mamo. Content to just let the story be what it is, for the most part, unless inspiration strikes.

I also imagine some of it has to do with not wanting to admit how awful the canon made him seemingly by accident. In order to make an interesting story about Aang, they'd have to add some conflict, and no die hard Aang fans seem to be anymore willing to do that than Bryke were. Take that with a grain of salt, though. This is just my opinion. I don't spend a bunch of time reading Aang fics.

Third, the lack of Aang centered fics may actually be based on his popularity. I don't know. I think there are way fewer Aang fans than there seems to be, it's just that the main Aang fans are so loud. I wouldn't be surprised. After all, he's the most boring of the main cast, his tragic backstory notwithstanding. I only know two or three Aang/Kataang fans in real life, and they are very, very casual fans. Most of the other ATLA fans I know prefer other characters/ ship Zutara. Obviously, online Aang isn't the most popular character either. Oh, sure, there are plenty of polls that put him/his canon ship at the top, but if you look at the actual fan content...well, you can see for yourself.

A slightly naughty alternative meta theory for the dcxdp fandom

Ghostly baby boom!

(Not to be confused with bang babies)

Ever since the Drs Fenton started experimenting on the infinite realms in the 80's/70's(?) There's been alot more natural portals opening onto earth with visitors.

Now these ghosts are stuck there waiting for a new portal to sweep them back to the zone. Sometimes they like to go 'blow off some steam' to help them cope. (Whether that's to fight, drink, party ect...)

Now, overshadowing a person tends to leave a small build up of ectoplasm in the hosts body, a figurative 'someone was here' kind of deal and while it's not going to cause any problems long term, it takes a while to get out of your system...

Meanwhile, doing the 'two person tango' without protection with someone whose been overshadowed recently is gonna transmit all sorts of things...

Cue a new generation or two of kids running around with trace ectoplasm in their system waiting for something to trigger a change, Making them metahumans. Most won't, they'll live life happily, slightly better at certain things for an unknown reason.

Now let's go back a bit. What about the people who got overshadowed on a night out and woke up in bed with someone they may or may not know, unable to remember the absolute rager they went to...

How many kids were born with the ectoplasm of a third parent? This is where the powerful meta's came from!

-How many times you think Johnnie and kitty have gone out on a 'double-date?'

(Bonus: The Nth metal in their make-up is particles attaching themselves to the ectoplasm in a sort of chemical covalent bond. The scientists unable to observe the ectoplasm believe the Nth metal particals are responsible for the powers)

Does 'magic' exist in the Dotakuverse? Like, human beings performing actual spells, there was an episode of the anime where Ash got transformed into a Pikachu.

What does Peach think about it, does she believe in it? I can imagine she's sceptical, at least until some inexperienced magician accidentally turns her into the world's buffest Roserade.

She doesnt believe...well. She says she doesnt, but is still terrified of the concept of it. So if youre scared of it surely you have some capacity to believe in it?

Of Peach, Rei, Plum, and Grey, Peach is the only one to have seen ghosts, and to have experienced unusual events, or "magic" if you want to call it that, and the staff all believe its because she's the one who believes it the most deep down, and believes it with fear. She doesnt hunt for these weird things, nor chase them down and try to prove them right or wrong, she activley avoids it all, its creepy to her, she's got jobs to do and has no time for it.

If asked she will wholly suggest its all smoke and mirrors, cant be true, and magic isnt functional...but then cleanse tags? is that not magic? Grey believes, he's convinced, because you cant explain some items without it. And surely all magic is just science thats unexplained yet? Peach is in a deep state of denial lol. She'd be a Bewear, an extra spicy one. Earth shatteringly powerful mon, theyre already tanks, add peach to that mix? Unstoppable. Take on anything.

((As a creator I dont involve it much because it muddies stories for me, I like a more logical approach most of the time, but I do think it has a place in the worldbuilding for the sake of fun, fear, or whimsy, and while I dont believe humans can perform actual magic at all in the Dotakuverse, I do believe pokemon skills/abilities and ancient energies can appear like magic, and be classed as that. Besides who doesnt love a halloween story where you wake up in the wrong body, or as a pokemon?? it is a fun line to explore, even if its not canon.))

If HBO is putting Kit and Emilia together for a Comic Con, it could be yet another “feeler” for whether they want to go through with Snow. The show has not been greenlit yet and while everyone was expecting Kit to make his announcement during the LA GOT con back in December, nothing was said about it to the point that fans weren’t even allowed to ask.

Now they’re sticking these two together for another Comic Con… it could have been any duo from the show. Could have been Kit and Peter or Kit and Sophie, Kit and Lena. But no. They got Kit and Emilia. Regardless, I’m super fucking interested to know what they’re going to say during that panel. Can it be July already please?

Steve's been on the phone for- it didn't matter!

All Billy wanted to do was cuddle with him, and Steve had the nerve to put up a hand and say, "In a minute, Muffin."

More than a minute later, and Billy's going crazy. He's pacing around in the kitchen, juggling lemons in the air (when he sees an article on snakes he ends up dropping the lemons on his head), huffing and puffing...

He knows he's being unreasonable. Billy is many things, but he's not stupid. He can't be with Steve every minute of every day. His... buddy has a life to live, and friends to see.

Billy didn't have any friends. He told himself he didn't mind, and he was almost starting to believe it.

As cliche as it sounds, his mother had been his first (and best) friend. And then she left.

Things with Steve are weird. They've slept together a few times (actually sleeping, and only hints of the other thing) and they certainly spend a lot of time together. But they haven't put a label on whatever they were yet.

Putting a label on a relationship frightened Billy. It made things all... official. Besides, Steve wouldn't want to be Billy's anything.

Damn intrusive thoughts.

He ignores reason and stomps into the living room, where Steve basically ignores him.

Fine. If all Harrington was in this for was his body, then he would simply have to milk it.

He starts with his wife beater (a weird fucking name for a shirt, and it kind of unnerved him, to be honest), taking it off slowly.

What if Steve doesn't like it?

No, no. There was only one remotely good quality about Billy, and that was his body. The rest was, quite frankly, a dumpster fire.

Next he unbuckles his belt, and begins to take off his jeans. It's a bit of a struggle, but he gets them off.

He stands before Steve in his underwear, and he clears his throat.

"What, Bills? I said- oh my lord." Steve drops the phone, and Billy jumps at the clatter it makes when it hits the floor.

Oh no. He doesn't like it. He's disappointed. He's-

"Sorry, Steve-"

Steve cups his ass cheeks and pulls him close. "This was a nice surprise."

"You were on the phone forever." Billy cringes inwardly at his voice. It sounds so unlike him.

"Sorry, Nance was just checking in. She wanted to know if I was up for going out for a movie-"

Billy is already trying to shimmy his pants up his ass, wishing he had two extra arms so he could plug his ears.

"And I told her I wasn't gonna go. That I was with you."

Billy stops mid-hop, staring at Steve.

"I'm not ashamed of people knowing that you're my boyfriend, babe." Steve's smile fades. "Unless you don't-"

Billy shakes his head immediately; how could Steve even think for a second that he wouldn't want to be in a relationship with Steve Harrington?

They're both idiots.

"I do. I'd like... to be... what you said just now," Billy says awkwardly. If Max were to see him now... she would never let him hear the end of it.

Steve's face illuminates like Joyce Byers' Christmas lights, and he kisses Billy, gripping the part of his hair that's not so close to his skull.

"The little show you put on... any reason for that, Muffin?"

"I... I wanted your attention."

"Well, you certainly have it now." Steve then frowns, and adds, "But Bills, I hope you do know... I'm not in this because I think you're hot."

Ouch.

"I-I mean not that you aren't! You're really, really gorgeous- too gorgeous for a shithole like Hawkins! I just... didn't want you to feel as though I was objectifying you. I wanted you to know I was in it for more than your body."

"What else is there?" Billy finds himself whispering, on the sudden verse of tears. Was he on his period or something? Jesus, get a grip, Hargrove!

Steve has a determined look on his face, and he replies instantly, "You're brave, you're protective, you're smart as a whip, you tell funny jokes, you're resourceful, you have a way of seeing through bullshit, you put on a front but I know you love Max more than anything-"

"Steve-"

"I'm not done! You're a good swimmer, you're good with cats, you don't cut off Robin when she goes on ramblings, you're genuine, you're dependable, you're passionate, you care deeply even if you don't always know how to show it, you stay in that house with that fucking scum because you won't let him break your little sister-"

"Like he broke me?"

Steve cups his face, wiping away the tears he didn't realize had been trickling down his cheeks. "You're not broken, Billy. I have no intention of fixing you. You aren't a fucking house, and you don't need to be fixed. You just deserve to-to have good things, and I wanna be one of those good things."

Billy smiles, sniffling. "You're the first good thing I've had in a while, Steve."

"Not the last, I assure you!" Steve says in his "King Steve" voice, hands on his hips. "So do you wanna... fool around? Or do you wanna cu-"

Billy jumps in Steve's arms, and the brunette oofs, stumbling back a little.

"Am I too-"

"I'm stronger than I look, alright? Chasing after a bunch of children and my favorite person in the world keeps me fit as a fiddle," Steve huffs, booping Billy's nose as he lies on the couch, positioning Billy right on top of him.

"Can you breathe?"

"If I weren't breathing, I would be dead, William."

"Yes, thank you, Captain Obvious."

"I heard that!"

"It's good to know your ears haven't failed you yet."

"You asshole, I'm not even that much older than you!"

"Uh huh. I saw a grey hair this morning. Didn't wanna say anything-"

"The movies are sounding really tempting right about now." Despite Steve's pouting, he grips Billy's hips tighter, letting him know: hey, I'm not going anywhere.

Billy sticks his tongue out at the landline, and snuggles deeper into the forest of hairs on Steve's chest.

Are there any other ST wlw ships you're into besides ronance? Just curious lol

literally any/all of them. When I first watched ST I was FUMING mad because I clocked Barb as a lesbian and I was furious that they would kill her off in the first two eps. So, Barb/Nancy was my original otp and I will devour any fic of them for sure, Joyce/Karen is another all time fav. Karen brought Joyce a casserole, you know they BEEN fuckin.

I'm currently cleaning up the smutty half of my Karen/Robin fic and I think we should let the girls smut it up with the MILFs more often.

I'd love to see more of Kali and Eden worked into fics as ultra rare-pair material.

Basically if it's ladies lovin' ladies then I'm into it or at least open to it. The funny thing is that the main ladies of ST are all so compelling as their own characters and the duffers certainly aren't going to go as deep as these women deserve, so I'm excited to see any further exploration of them by the fandom.
