Bad Buddy One Year Anniversary Rewatch

There’s only one month left until Bad Buddy’s first anniversary on Oct. 29th, which means we're all due for a rewatch soon! I talked Nuria @mrdumpling into doing this event with me, we haven't done this kinda thing before & we've been so excited about this (minus the part where GMMTV announced theirs first🙄 lol). why the hell did you compare dogwhistles with a meme format wtf is wrong with you

This is actually a very important question, so I'm glad you asked!

tl;dr Dogwhistles are commonly accidentally used in meme formats and seeing the usage of a phrase that acts like a dogwhistle for my own faction (Christians) made me realize why it’s so important to avoid accidentally using dogwhistles for hate groups.  Keep reading for a better explanation.

(For those who don't know, this ask is referring to a comment I made earlier on a post that used the phrase "my brother in christ":

And I'd like to clarify that I'm not referring to the more tangible definition of dogwhistles here - that being subtle iconography that indicates affiliation with a faction - but rather the kind of linguistic dogwhistles that are accidentally used and are warned against so frequently on here.

You see, the reason I feel comfortable comparing the two is because, in reality, the phrase "my brother in christ" is a dogwhistle. It just so happens that it's a dogwhistle for a completely benign* faction: Christians.

I am a devout Christian, and I have been all my life. My parents raised me to believe in Jesus Christ as my Lord and savior, and the entire time I was growing up, the phrase "my brother in Christ" was used around other Christians and became one with our views in my mind.

So now, when I see the phrase "my brother in christ" used on here, despite knowing that it's not being used by actual believers in these cases, I feel seen. I feel like I'm seeing other people who think the same way I do, or at the very least feel like my views are accepted enough to be memed.

This is a fairly safe thing for Christians, because Christianity is already one of the most popular religions in the world, but it's much worse when you end up accidentally signaling the same thing to hate groups. People generally don't want hate groups to feel like they're "seen" and "respected", because that makes them more confident coming out of their hate holes and sharing their hateful views in public spaces.

I remember seeing a response to the whole "alhamdulliah he has been baked" meme going around saying that "alhamdulliah" was a dogwhistle and we should be careful about using the term, but no one ever really explains why we should avoid using terms that are dogwhistles if we obviously aren't using them for that purpose.

This is why.

*Heavily depends on who you ask, though I feel like I can safely say that people who actually follow the whole "love your neighbor as yourself and by the way 'your neighbor' includes everyone you don't like" thing that Jesus taught aren't usually a problem.
