lemme start saying so plot is everything to me, pwp can be hot but i'll hardly remember it afterwards, that being said here's some writers that can do both great plots and hot scenes.

also while digging i realize i wasn’t following some of those and if you noticed im sorry im dumb but i truly love your writing.

@thekillingmoonmoon ofc moon is the first one i think when the topic "best writers" come up, i freaking love her and everything she does its not even fair to pick one thing so im picking 3, this super passionate toji work that i re-read at an alarming frequency (which btw i consider my own personal gift). yakuza choso and yuki aka the hottest duo ever. the cherry on top is her kishibe series (just realized i gotta catch up on)

@rinhaler - luxe is def on my top 3, she comes up with very organic scenes. even if it's a simple plot she can develop it so originally. I recently read her underground fighter!sukuna and i'm still thinking about it.

@laudthingcat has the best headcanons in the jjk fandom hands down, it’s the perfect dose of hot funny and cute, pick anything from her masterlist it’s guaranteed you’ll have a good time reading it. when you moan their name in your sleep in particular gives me butterflies

@meownotgood is obviously the best aki writer out there, you can see the love for aki in their words and how they write him so well and so into character. arrival in tokyo is truly a masterpiece, they also have a +100k words series i've been wanting to read for a while but i want to rewatch chainsaw man first hehe, i'm 100% sure is fire tho.

@kentoangel roma writes choso like she's in love with him and you can tell. shes always on my for you and even her snippets are *chefs kiss* special kudos to stepbrother!choso

@kentopedia i just realized i'm assigning a writer per character and nanami is definitely rylie's. the domestic lovely way she writes him makes me forget canon.

@tojisun another blog that is very often on my for you page. cannot talk about toji fics without bringing up sun, everything she writes about him has me furiously nodding. not to mention simon and konig, just talking about them makes me wanna run to her blog and binge read everything

@chocochipsushi 's bodyguard toji is unforgetable to me, i wish i lost my memory so i could read it all again for the first time. bodyguard toji is the definition of living rent free in my mind, whenever i have to deal with annoying coworkers i immediately think “bodyguard toji would not allow them to talk to me like that”

@suget one of the greatest geto writers for sure, they have so many geto works, i was going through their blog to find the one i read more recently and there was so many others i haven’t seen! another writer i could very easily spend a whole day binge reading. btw this cult leader one was recommended to me and i fell in love with it <3

@staryukis has the cutest gojo drabbles

@tonycries brooklin baby was recommended to me by moon and it had me by the neck! also they have many other works im hoping to read soon as well

I'm pretty new to the whole Dimileth situation, but so far I'm loving the ship for it's dynamic, the angst added to the romance is always a good touch. I'm just curious, which fanfictions would you suggest people? may it be your own dimileth fics, or that of others you really enjoyed

Whew anon you are in for it now lol. So that I don't just copy paste the entirety of AO3 here, I'm using your angst mention as guidance, so these all have some of that. I tried to keep the AUs to a minimum since when I was new, I preferred canon settings. Many are rated explicit but the sex is very secondary to the plot. Anything else by these authors are also 100% worth checking out.

well, the wiki for king of diamonds says game over is -10...if we take the rules to be literally...’reach -10 is game over’...what if you bypass it by reaching -11 and glitch out the system. yeah i realize that logically, borderland rules are absolute, and -11 is going to be game over as well but. let me dream.

0.8 * (67 + 100)/2 = 66.8 which is exact match considering round 13′s 23 by chishiya was an exact match for 22.93. this triggers the double point penalty making the score go to -11.

anyway also don’t take this too seriously this is just wish fulfilment....

btw I highly recommend checking out Kaiosea’s For Something To Believe In for a post-canon fix-it with similar themes! that fic definitely inspired thinking about the -11 glitch :)

RAHH HELLO OKAY (you dont have to post/ use this ask as a way to show your art (if you create it) btw, in fact it would probably be better formatting wise if you didnt dfghdffhgdf /nf)

i would recommend reading this the whole way through... i dont know if im gonna structure this well at all

my favourite scene is either the albatrio lying in a circle in the gardens OR gill and chip sitting in silence (madly blushing) and looking at the sea in the cove just after gill gives chip the necklace lmaoo

but out of those two its the second 100%

the cove itself is like a hole/ cave in the side of a cliff. its open to the ocean and they are both sitting at the edge of this open area, their feet wouldnt be in the water bc theres like a meter and a half gap between the floor of the cove and the sea

gills corals are a little glow-y, same as chips necklace and they are either looking at the sea or like looking forward but at each other with their eyes OR theyre like properly insanely blushing and theyre both facing like away from eachother (god this probably makes no sense)

neither of them are wearing crowns but gill is wearing a lot (not too much though ykyk keep it classy) of pearl jewellery and has pearlescent accents on his clothes, his hair is down and pretty long. he has the same sort of clothes he wares under is armour on, but its more regal/ rich looking???

chip has shoulder length wavy hair and its a bit puffy and all over the place (bc he fell over fhdkfhsdk L ) he has some kind of coat type thing? like a waistcoat but not quite...? idk how to describe it. he also has the necklace on and one of those prince/pirate type shirts with the big poofy sleeves and he has a braid w/ gold beads in.

the cave probably would have some kind of turquoise-y lighting if you want to do anything with that!!

please ask me if you want something cleared up/ more info bc im so sleepy and this probably makes no sense...

the feverwake duology, by victoria lee i don't think i've talked about this series before on my blog but it is one of my FAVORITES of all time oh god. it's so so so fucking good dystopian sci-fi magic plague war just. SUCH a cool concept and SUCH beautiful writing i've read it three times and might need to reread soon lol

teeth, by hannah moskowitz gay mermaid love story but like. in the absolute most fucked-up way possible. i love this book SO much hannah moskowitz is just one of my favorite writers of all time

a history of glitter and blood, by hannah moskowitz my favorite book! another story where you get a happy ending but the angst u go through to get there...exquisite

human acts, by han kang made me cry like a fucking baby. this is historical fiction based on very real events and interviews with people who experienced the gwangju uprising + massacre in south korea in 1980.

the song of achilles, by madeline miller another one that i feel like i don't even need to say anything about lol

crush, by richard siken poetry!! here's ur poetry rec. the richard siken hype is not a lie this book will gut you

the animorphs series, by k.a. applegate i am being 100% serious this is one of my favorite series of all time and i read it for the first time as an adult like. this is not childhood nostalgia it was too scary for me as a kid. genuinely changed the way i think about writing and truly is one of the best war stories i have ever read. the last book is gut-wrenching in a way that very little else i have come across is.

the hunchback of notre-dame, by victor hugo for the classics enjoyers <3 victor hugo is one of my favorite writers i was really into his books in high school lol

the man who laughs, by victor hugo not as well-known as his other work but i wrote a big research paper on this book one time so it holds a special place in my heart just bc i spent so much time with it

tv shows

banana fish (2018) outing myself as an occasional anime enjoyer lmao. i watched this bc i kept seeing people talk about how tragic it was and then i saw my sister watching it and i looked up a plot summary of what happens at the end and i was like huh that sounds interesting. and then i sat down to watch it KNOWING what was going to happen and i still like. was screaming crying by the end.

the haunting of bly manor (2020) just re-watched this show like two months ago and it is 2/2 on making me cry so!!

movies

children who chase lost voices (2011) this movie has a happy ending but like. idk man there's this one specific scene that just GETS me every time. always feel hollowed out but like...in a good way after watching it.

brokeback mountain (2005) i mean...do i need to say anything about this one? gay cowboy tragedy my beloved <3

the last unicorn (1982) watching this movie as a kid is i think what altered my brain chemicals and made me an angst enjoyer. so! had to put it on the list <3

and of course on a final note--as these are heavy angst + tragedy etc etc if u know there are things u need to watch out for please look up trigger warnings before diving in! they all contain content that is upsetting in some way...hence the angst. hopefully that doesn't even need to be said but. well an honest hard-working angst farmer needs to cover his bases sometimes doesn't he

If you like hurt/comfort fics with a lot of feelings and internal struggles and pining, and also fuck or die and amazing smut, you should should read this fic!

READ IT HERE

So I have to start with a disclaimer, Jo, the writer of this fic, is my best friend in the whole world and was the one that got me into writing fics and into making gifs and the whole fandom world. So I might be a little biased with everything she does - even if I think I’m not.

I also followed the creation of this fic, reading it multiple times before it was finished and giving her my 2 cents about it (And making a gif for it). Jo hasn’t written a Rivusa centered fic in a while and I was trying to keep a chill head while internally screaming with excitement that she was writing one - If you aren’t aware, I’m I like Rivusa a bit. Just a little bit.

This was a birthday fic for @gossipqueen2000, another amazing writer and fellow rivusa-stan (totally recommend her fics btw), and Jo first asked Mo what she enjoyed most in fics so this gift would be perfect. I’m not 100% what was in that list because that was a private conversation but boy am I happy with whatever Mo said because the final result was EXPECTACULAR.

This fic. THIS FIC. Ugh, where to even start?

Jo has a way of writing that not only sets the scene perfectly but takes you back and then into characters heads in a way that’s not tireing or confusing or that breaks you out of the plot. Everything happens in the perfect pace, fits right where it needs to fic and flows easily, you could read 100 pages of her writing and feel like you read only 10.

What I also love a lot about her writing, and something I think I struggle a lot with, is showing characters emotions, what they really feel in a way that isn’t “he was sad”, “he was angry”.

You could feel Riven’s love for Musa, not only the romantic love, or the physical lust he has for her, but the true, real love, because of little things like how he knows to keep her ID and her card in his wallet because she has a bad habit of not carrying one, or how he knows the lyrics to her favorite songs- which he also knows not to sing along because she hates when people do that. Details like this, details she adds at just the right place at the right time, show you so much more than what is said, shows the reader characters habits, their history. It gives their feelings depth and it makes it all just feel more real.

And the whump! Jo can write whump. The same way she writes love she writes pain and its so detailed and hurts it makes your heart squeeze. I don’t read a lot of the fics she puts out and I’ve apologized to her tons about it but because she loves hurt and whump and my heart is very fragile, I cry about the most littlest things and when I read a whump fic of hers it literally ruins my day because its all so real and raw and my mind just can’t stop thinking about it.

And the smut... oh boy oh boy... Jo says she’s not really a fan of writing smut but she’s amazing at it, with just a perfect dose of kink mixed it to make it spicy(er). And the smut in this didn’t dissapoint. After reading about, what 19k words of hurt/comfort you finally arrive at the smut and you yell FINALLY! and its HOT!

The plot, which maybe should have been the first thing I talked about but oh well. The plot is... what other word can I use that isn’t “perfect” or “amazing” because I think if Jo were to beta this post she’d say I used these words too much already... The plot is genius (?)

But seriously, Jo could have taken a trope like fuck or die, which is usually straight to the point and PWP, but made it just that, quick and easy. But no, she created a whole intricate universe, a whole detailed backstory, ten years of pining, before she delivered on the prompt. And then instead of making it so they resolve the issue right away, she draggs it over a few days, makes Riven taste the power of the curse, makes him prepared for death as much as he can be because he thinks there’s no way out of it. She makes you yell a the computer/phone screen because RIVEN YOU ARE SO FUCKING STUPID.

I think if I say anything else I’ll be spoiling the fic too much for those who haven’t read. So read it.

And while you’re there check out Jo’s other fics, only a few are rivusa because her main ship is skloom but I 100% recommend them. All of them.

So based on your recommendations, I read There’s a Lover in the Story and I must say, popping my JJK Fic reading cherry by a story that starts with a Nanami POV right after I had watched THAT anime episode was certainly A CHOICE. A masochistic one but I guess I am a glutton for punishment. Why else would I read your fics? (Also I'm going to imagine that Nanami made it to Malaysia and the other parts were us all collectively hallucinating *sobs uncontrollably*)

That being said, I really enjoyed your fic Nanami's suffering because teenage Gojo is a MENACE. Not to mention Gojo being critical of his older version was hilariously on point. Yuji is...I just want to hug him so much, that precious bean. You did warn me that the third part is heavy on the manga spoilers so I guess I better get my ass in gear and get caught up. I'm just going to re-read it from the beginning.

And I did see this on the 7th! Towards the end of it, just as I was going to sleep. And welcome back, werewolf anon! You might be pleased or at least amused to know that I read this ask and promptly punched the air. Embarrassing noises may have been made.

...In my defense, JJK turns me into A Creature, and I am Highly Not Normal about comments on those fics—even more than usual, that is. I don't think I was ever #normal in fandom.

Anyway! Sweet damn, yes, that's some timing. I won't say I'm over Nanami (I'll never be over Nanami), but I read that part in the manga when I caught up with it over a year ago, so the hurt isn't fresh, and even the anime just got me settling in and enjoying the pain (side note: the final death scene/moment is more brutal in the manga, 100% recommend). Cannot imagine what it must've been like to run into that for the first time in the anime. MAPPA went for the jugular with that beach hallucination. I've got tissues and porn, should you need any.

In the mean time, I can provide Nanami suffering in...less painful ways. Teen!Gojou only makes him crave death every other day.

But in all seriousness, I'm delighted to see you're enjoying that fic ❤️

Also, you'll have plenty of time to catch up on the manga before Part 3. I'm taking a break this month, so all updates have been pushed forward a month. Part 3 won't be up till April even without further delays.

i just finished re-reading Ronja Robber's Daughter by Astrid Lindgren! It's such a comfort book and it was an easy read after a long time of uh, not reading a lot. I'm also picking away at a book about the ACT therapy method that my mom got me, which has been pretty interesting!

Last song:

The last song I listen-listened to and not just background noise was me looping Through The Eyes Of A Child by AURORA for Alphie fic writing purposes. Really, all of AURORA's work is incredible and I highly recommend it for that fairytale melancholy whimsy!!!

Currently watching:

Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 weekly (pain pain pain), as well as Zom 100. I also watched all of OPLA in two sittings, which for a person who did not click with the OP anime or the manga is pretty funny. I loved it, btw, and I've been pretty brainrotted over it since :3c

Do you have any recommendations on reading it? Like skipping some, of should I just straight up read everything in the order ao3 gives? :0

Haha yes tis I, I wrote them both <3

So on AO3 I would honestly recommend reading everything and in series order, because Midnight Series is pretty heavy with foreshadowing, callbacks and parallels, and a lot of what gets mentioned early on actually comes back. If you skip around you might miss some important context- for example, if you skip Midnight Mistakes and Midnight Memories, you might feel a little lost when Mumbo's backstory is brought up later on, as it gets referenced quite a bit throughout the series.

However, I am aware that Midnight is a hefty read and would be a huge time investment, so...

The only fic I think you could probably skip and not lose out on much or anything plot-wise is Midnight Passions, which is more of a character and relationship building moment (and also building a little on Avian lore) with Mumbo and Grian, but it does get referenced later on as well. I have some "Tumblr Exclusives" I post here as well, but those aren't necessary for the full story- I try to only post what's necessary on AO3 for now.

If I had to pick a few that absolutely SHOULD be read if you want to get into the series (BOLDED means it is absolutely crucial to the plot); Midnight Wanderings (1), Lies (3), Warnings (5), Misunderstandings (6), Visit (9), Folly (13), Rains (14), Revelation (15), Summers (17), Dreams (18), Miseries (20), Meeting (21) and Alley (22). That being said, I absolutely, 100% recommend reading them all, 1-22 in order, because they all call back to each other and skipping around can miss out on information or development. Even in Midnight Alley, I've dropped a few breadcrumbs that will be picked up again like 8-10 parts from now.

Mmm what do y'all think? Does anyone else have anything to add? Any thoughts to add, any parts y'all think are crucial to read?

Thank you for your ask and letting me know you keep rereading my fics! <3 The presentation went well, I think, although it's always difficult to know what the professor thinks (I know from a different course he can be strict, but we haven't had a grade by him yet this yr so idk). My neighbours are continuous twats :')

As for my recs! I wanna preface this list by saying it is very incomplete. I’ve taken a random sampling of fics I enjoyed, and you won’t really find anything from the past year here because the only stuff I’ve read was in a private document with @t-eminence (which I would recommend if it was public but it isn’t, so all I can say about that is that it sucks to be you 🤭 🤭)

Also, there’s no particular order to these fics, it’s just a small selection of fics I’ve enjoyed reading!

Banned by Vitula (Teen and Up, 10k)

Let’s start with this one. I’ll confess, I’m not usually a fan of chatfic/phone-fic which I remember made me apprehensive when I began reading it, but I shouldn’t have! I really enjoyed the dynamic of Jon and Pat here, how their respective histories (or in Jonny’s case, alternate history) tie into real live events, and how the story manages to offer substance while still being a light-hearted read!

All this feels strange and untrue by clayisforgirls (Explicit, 50k)

Amnesia fic, another one of those tropes that is hit or miss for me. Again, the substance in this fic and the use of Patrick’s amnesia to explore his feelings for Jonny is so good! I don’t really want to say too much about the plot in case you haven’t read it, but I really enjoyed the pacing—especially of the first couple of chapters.

Muscle stim by Sahiya (Explicit, 7,5k)

Patrick’s a hockey player, Jon his physio. Substance, bla bla, you know the deal. I just love it when there’s some sense of explanation for one of them not being a hockey player (and I’m just now realizing that two of the fics I chose have Jonnybe that person, sorry Jon!!). Then again, I also love the idea of Jonny touching Patrick for ~purely professional reasons and Patrick being a little less professional about it. The dialogue is fun, the pacing is good, and I think it’s the perfect length for a bedtime story when you still need to unwind a little!

Sonoran by Allthebros (Teen and Up, 2k)

A lovely vignette of 1988 in (fresh) retirement. I think ATB really hit the spot here describing Arizona, it’s pretty poetic without the language veering into obnoxious (looking at you, Oscar Wilde). I really like how the setting ties in with Jon and Pat’s changing relationship here, and how those are observations Patrick makes.

Patrick and the Lucky Potato by Bittersweet (General, 700 words)

100% crack. 100% fun. Sometimes a story doesn’t have to be deep, long, or serious—cause this is none of that and yet it never fails to make me smile 😊 I don’t really have much else to say!

I wanna rock the RPMs between the reds and greens by liketheroad (Not Rated, 4k)

1988 through David’s eyes. I do really enjoy reading outsider POVs, because they tend to capture moments that are different from pairing POVs both between the pairing and how the pairing affects the people around them—and they can be so, so, so good because of that. This is an amazing example. I really like how David comes to terms with whatever-it-is Jon and Pat have, but also his conflicted feelings towards Patrick (and by extension, Jonny) throughout. Amazing concept, and an amazing execution.

The Purity Myth by downjune (Mature, 20k)

A really wonderful magical realism AU. I don’t always go for the anthropomorphic stuff, I’m not a huge fan of the wolf ‘verses going on in the fandom, but when I read this one it did hit me just right (although I still have to be in a specific mood for it). I like how vague some of the descriptions were, but also how it brought elements that were unique to me to the fic regarding the magical powers, how dragons and unicorns etc. are described, and so on. And, of course, how all of that ties in to Jon and Pat, their personalities, and their burgeoning relationship.

In Close by demotu (Explicit, 2,5k)

…you know how I said Muscle stim was a fantastic bedtime story to wind down with? This is my favourite bedtime story. I tried not to include it. I know I’ve recommended it before. Probably multiple times. I know demotu is a major name in the fandom, and has some really famous long form fics… but this? This is as perfect as it gets. I feel like this is so short and sweet, and yet it encapsulates everything 1988 is to me, the hesitancy and the simultaneous comfort, the kind of … communication that doesn’t require words, even if it’s never made explicit in the fic that that’s what’s going on, them having this kind of awareness of each other, and the thousands of extra words being told between the lines here. Also, it’s definitely on my list of “hottest make-out sessions in fics.”

On the Line by orphan_account (Explicit, 26k)

To close… a less serious fic, and one I haven’t reread as often as some of the other works on the list. Still, it’s a fun read, I like how Jon gets serious about wooing Patrick right from the start, even if he only finds out Pat’s into him by chance. They’re so wonderfully, charmingly them in this fic, absolute idiots, and that is all I sometimes want honestly. Less drama, more stupidity! (…no that’s a lie, I also love the drama).
