Summoning Gone Wrong

A/N: Thanks to @lazy-alex for commenting the base idea in Ghost Hunting Vigilantes for Tim trying to do a summoning that just goes wrong~

Danny calmly sipped the ecto-tea and resisted eyeing the ghost club Lady Gotham had placed next to her as she also drank her tea with all the elegance the spirit possessed. The Ghost King was pretty sure she had placed it like that, in his view, on purpose. He just wasn't sure if it was as a warning or as a preparation since the last couple of times he had been in Gotham, she had felt the need of using it against him.

"I am very glad that you are finally looking into that matter, your highness." The spirit commented, placing the cup back onto the table and refilling it. "I wasn't sure if you had been made aware of it before, if I had known that the old beings had not mentioned it to you before I certainly would have sooner."

Danny nodded. "Yeah, about that. What are these Lazarus Pits anyway? Clockwork only told me to look out for the color green, which is not helpful. And Pandora started on an entire history lesson regarding Lazarus and I am pretty sure that has nothing to do with these Pits your 'knights' mentioned."

Lady Gotham chuckled amused with mirth in her eyes. "They are only known as Lazarus Pits in the human world, my king, not in the Infinite Realms."

"So what…" Danny couldn't finish his question as his ghost sense went off. He really wanted to slam his head into the table. It had been months since his senses went off like that and he hoped it was just Cujo who followed him or Fright Knight. But as no one appeared to interrupt them, he got ticked off because that meant it was one of his former rogues who was up to something. He excused himself from his discussion with Lady Gotham who appeared even more amused than before.

Whoever it was he would send them straight back to the Ghost Zone, they were interrupting some important kingly business here!

A little earlier not too far away from the ghostly discussion, by a recent regularly vigilante visited occult site, three vigilantes stood before a summoning cycle.

Red Robin was crouching by the circle, chalk in hand as he drew runes and symbols on the ground all according to one of his research papers that summed up all the information he had gathered. Including information he had obtained from the Justice League Dark, mainly Constantine since the man owned him and wouldn't just tell on him, behind Batman's back.

It had been weeks since their last encounter with the teenage ghost. He didn't want to admit it but Red Robin was getting worried about the ghost. Both times when they left they sounded like something was hunting or hurting them and last time there was even that green swirly thing they saw for a short moment right after they had heard the ghost say their goodbyes with an actual voice. Besides, that ghost was a mystery to them and Red Robin wasn't known to leave any sort of mystery they encountered unsolved.

"Should we really do this without B?" Nightwing asked, eyeing the strange symbols the youngest among them was drawing on the ground.

"Fuck him. If we get him involved we wouldn't be doing this at all." Red Hood added crossing his arms. "I am more surprised that its only us three this time. I would have bet that at least one of the others would have joined too."

"Baby Bat is out on a mission with B. Spoiler and Orphan are on a outer space mission and Signal has an exam tomorrow." Nightwing shrugged. "It's probably better form Robin not to be here. He was pretty spooked after the last two times."

"Ha! Spooked? The kid is dead set on Pit Demons trying to kill us."

"We can't comple-"

"Finished the writing." Red Robin cut in dusting his gloves from chalk, he was still kneeling on the ground as he turned to the older two vigilantes holding his hands out expectantly. "Nightwing, you brought the candles?"

The vigilante in question handed over a plastic back with the label of a gas station. Red Hood titled his head in question, indicating that he was raising an eye brow under his helmet. The elder only shrugged sheepishly as Red Robin stared at the colorful duck candles it contained.

"I forgot you asked me to buy some and went last minute to the late night open counter gas station. They only had these colorful duck candles."

"Well our fucking ghost has some Humor. Might work better for them then."

Red Robin only sighed but still placed the candles in the circle the way Constantine had described to him. "We will have to see if this will work."

He had made sure to also draw up a protective circle around the summoning one just like Zatana had instructed and Constantine had insisted he would need. Lighting up the candles he stepped back next to his brothers.

"So according to Constantine, we are now supposed to recite a summoning spell and think about the ghost we talked to before to call them back to us."

"That's it?"

"That's it."

"So…" Red Robin distributed a piece of paper to each of his brothers. "We start on three."

"One…."

"Wait let me read that shit first!"

"Two…"

"Slow down, little bird."

"Three."

The three of them definitely were not in sync. Nightwing struggled with some of the words while Red Hood ended up mixing in some chosen curse words when he stumbled over a word. Red Robin even though he had practiced before still struggled with some of the words also but still all three managed to get through the incarnation.

They waited with their breaths held for something to happen but the seconds ticked by, with nothing happening. After three minutes Red Robin let out a sigh, deciding that this was a failure.

Just as he was about to step up to the circle to blow out the candles, a green swirling portal like the one he had briefly seen last time opened on the ground where the summoning circle was and a figure rose up from it. The figure was entirely dressed in white with black gloves, boots, belt and hat. Their skin was just as white as the clothes they were wearing and the being was staring back at them with completely green eyes, no irises or pupils. They stood firmly and straight in the summoning circle, arms crossed behind their back and by the way they were holding themself appeared like an authority figure.

"That doesn't look like a 16 years old ghost." Red Hood commented, his hand resting on his gun holder as he stared down their summon.

"Red, you did follow all the instructions right." Nightwing asked his hands, also moving to take out his escrima sticks, eying the being that was now looking at them in what he assumed was contempt.

"Yes, I did." Turning to their summon the vigilantes eyed it carefully. "Hi, sorry about the sudden summon. You obviously aren't the 16 years old ghost we had been talking to before. So uhm, you are free to go again? Unless you happen to know a 16 year old ghost that had been to Gotham at least two times now?"

The summoned being didn't look like they were going to answer, instead they took out a green glowing book that had 'RULES' written on it and leafed through the pages. Stopping when it apparently found a certain page. Their eyes focusing on the page then back at them. Still not grazing them with an answer. Red Robin however noticed how their inclined their head, for a short moment, over to Red Hood before turning back to the book and turning a couple of more pages.

He hadn't been the only one as he felt Nightwing tensing next to him too as well as heard the soft click of Red Hood removing the safety from his gun.

"Unauthorized summoning with out of date summoning methods. Interruption of security works. Unauthorized usage of corrupted ectoplasmic waste and apparent coverup of a human infected by corrupted ectoplasm." The being listed and the three couldn't help but feel reminded of a policeman listing crimes.

"I, Walker, reappointed Warden by his majesty the Ghost King and self appointed head chief of the security department of the Infinite Realms, hereby declare all of you under arrest for the previously listed offenses. Especially you, punk." The ghost called Walker pointed at Red Hood who in return pulled out his guns pointing them back at it. "You will be presented directly to our King. To think there would be a subject that failed to report back their existence."

"The fuck you wanna do? I ain't going anywhere." Red Hood scoffed, his distorted voice sounding challenging towards the ghost.

"Not to be rude but how can he report something he didn't even know about." Nightwing added eying the ghost as well as the protective barrier. The being hadn't made a move toward them yet and it should keep it contained but that didn't mean they just could let their guard down, not like he would let them take any of his brothers anywhere either. He took a step forward in case he needed to cover his younger siblings, protectiveness stirring in him. "RR, did Constantine or Zatana give you a spell to forcefully send them back?"

"Not exactly but they said destroying the summoning circle should send them back instantly." Red Robin mused after glancing at his notes for a brief moment. He didn't dare look away from that ghost for longer than needed. Normally he would be thrilled about having summoned a ghost and probably ask it a bunch of questions he had, ever since their first encounter with that 16 years old ghost left him with a tone of unanswered ones, but not with this one.

"Maybe we should-"

"WALKER! NOT AGAIN! BACK TO THE ZONE NOW!" A white haired 16 years old looking flying boy appeared through the wall without destroying it like he just phased in. The three vigilantes stared at the new presence that looked rather ticked off. The teenager had a cosmic with green flame outlined looking crown floating over their head and were wearing a jumpsuit with a logo that looked like a flaming D.

"Hey could that be our little ghost bastard?" Hood more or less stage-whispered over to Nightwing and Red Robin.

"Looks 16, maybe younger but not like what I imagined." Nightwing mused.

"Ghost Kid -ahem- your Highness, perfect Timing. I was just about to apprehend-"

"No." The teenager interrupted, arms crossed as he floated before the other ghost. "We went over this when I appointed you as the Warden again. Back. To. The. Zone."

"Did… did that other ghost call him 'highness' just now?" The more he got to learn about ghosts the more questions appeared to come up and Red Robin would definitely need answers for all of them.

"Your Highness, we need to-"

"Back now!" The teen repeated as he moved his left arm to point at a portal he opened especially for Walker. "Or do I have to get Lady Gotham to kick you out of her haunt herself?"

Red Robin watched how the two ghosts appeared to have a stare down before the white one closed his rule book and bowed before leaving. Well he would have left if he didn't smack right into the protective wall the vigilante had set up before the summoning. Good to know that Constantine's advice worked.

"Pff - cough -" The teenager covered his mouth, hiding a laugh behind a cough as he closed the portal he had opened and reopened it inside the barrier. The white ghost only sent them the most disgruntled and offended glare Red Robin had seen in a while before going through the portal the teen had opened.

Before either of the three could say anything the teenager let out a sigh and muttered something about having to deal with Walker being naggingly annoying about security and summonings later again. As if noticing them for the first time the boy glanced over at them and instantly stiffed and Red Robin definitely saw recognition in the boy's glowing green eyes. Could it be...?

"Shit." The teenager cursed. Yup, that's him.

"You are-"

"Sorry, no time for talking, gotta get back to Lady Gotham." They interrupted before continuing to ramble on. "You don't really want to make an old spirit with a ghost club wait. You guys better forget what you saw here. I would like Man In Black wipe your memory if I could but well for now please don't attempt summoning like that again? Summonings like that are outdated and barely work correctly for us ghosts. Demon summonings are a different matter but for ghosts this won't work correctly anymore or at least not since I got the stupid crown. You either end up with some random ghost or Walker trying to arrest humans. I soo have enough of getting him back from all the attempts of arresting humans that broke 'summoning rules'. Maybe I should have Fright Night arrest Walker for forcing his summon whenever he notices human summons… Anyway! Don't try again. Okay? Okay. Thanks and bye!"

The boy blinked out of existence before any of them could get a word in. The three vigilantes stared at the now empty spot. Red Robin had so many more additional questions now after having heard the presumed ghost teens ramble. So if the summons from the Justice League Dark were outdated then maybe he would need to find a more modern summoning? Also the teen had mentioned a Lady Gotham and Red Robin could only assume that that had to be their local city's spirit judging by the name.

"Well… we know now what our ghost boy looks like." Nightwing offered after some time and Red Hood scoffed.

"How the fuck was that boy a ghost? He looked more like a meta kid than a ghost."

"Well judging by the voice he definitely was the one that talked the last two times."

"So Demon Brat's Pit Demon theory is true?"

"He didn't lo-"

"I am going to try and summon this Lady Gotham next." Red Robin cut in as he turned on his heel, determined to get to the bottom of this ghost mystery even if he had to pester the JLD members for a while.

We've all joked about Danny's magical girl transformation at least once, but what if he genuinely was a "magical girl"? like the portal was powered purely by magic and when it turned on with Danny inside it just gave him ghost like abilities, maybe even with a magical artifact (like the miraculous). he gets a cute little outfit and everything and is extremely embarrassed by it at first but it grows on him eventually.

I'm thinking Pariah is the big bad here, just really channeling that hawkmoth energy, and I realize I'm making more miraculous ladybug references then dc ones lol- ANYWAY, the dc aspect comes in when Constantine lands himself in Walker's prison for, idk his soul tax evasion, around the same time Danny is staging a prison break to hang with Wulf. this could also work with Jason, who probably got sucked into the GZ by complete accident and immediately started causing problems on purpose and got arrested by a ghost cop 💀. Danny, not recognizing them and getting very off Vibes, takes them with.

when the dust has settled and the two become friends, Danny asks where they need to be at that moment, which is when they (Jason or Constantine) remember they had been fighting with the JL and they should probably head back lol. so Danny opens a portal, preferably in the middle of the watchtower in clear view of all heroes present, probably with his magic artifact that I'm unironically imagining as a Star Butterfly like wand, and personally escorts whoever you choose, back to ensure their safety, unintentionally putting himself on the JL's radar.

Voices In Struggle: Remembering Tortuguita + Resistance in Lützerath and Against Tren Maya

This week on The Final Straw, we feature three segments: words from a friend of Manuel “Tortuguita” Teran, the forest defender killed by law enforcement on January 18th outside of Atlanta, Georgia; A-Radio Berlin’s conversation with an activist at Lutzerath encampment in western Germany attempting to block a lignite coal extraction operation by RWE; a discussion of the Tren Maya megaproject by the AMLO administration in Mexico.

Remembering Tortuguita

First up, we caught up with Eric Champaign of Tallahassee, FL, about his friend Manny, aka Tortuguita or little turtle. Manuel Teran was shot and killed by law enforcement during an early morning raid of the forest encampment to defend the Welaunee aka Atlanta Forest and to stop CopCity on Wednesday, January 18th, 2023. Law enforcement claimed in the media that they responded to shots fired and the wounding of an officer by killing the shooter, but at the time of this release the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has not yet produced a weapon or bodycam footage of the clash. [Update, Georgia Bureau of Investigation claims they found Tort's gun and ballistics match the bullet in the pelvis of the cop] The killing of Tortuguita has sparked outrage, calls for independent investigations, vigils and calls for renewed and dispersed activity. Word is that another 6 people were arrested and charged with domestic terrorism during the raid. Opposing Project Tren Maya

Finally, we’re sharing a segment by Frequenz-A about Proyecto Tren Maya in the Yucatán peninsula of so-called Mexico. The conversation with a member of Recherche-Ag about a report they published in Solidarity with the Zapatista movement, on the German state and corporate participation in this mega-project and the dangers posed by the Maya Train, which includes huge expansion of electric, travel and other corporate and state infrastructure through sensitive ecosystems and sovereign indigenous lands, being overseen by the Mexican military. Don't Be Afraid To Make Mistakes

I never watched Arrested Development when it first aired, but I have been watching it the past few weeks - and I am hooked. This clip is a great reminder that we can't be afraid to make mistakes. But, like you will hear in the Lanakila paragraph, we do have to realize that making mistakes can cost you. So, don't be afraid but do accept the consequences. MMMK (as Jason Bateman would say)

LANAKILA vs TuPADRE

Well, why don't I just tell you rather than making you wait. So this weekend we had a Point of Grace Fan Weekend. 40 "fans" pay big money to hang out with POG in various places around town. One of the nights was a dinner in my backyard and Cliff came to help me set up and tear down. That night he said..." I think that I am going to play Taysom Hill as my TE and I think he might end up being the QB before the game is over and I will get all those points too". I said absolutely - that sounds great. Then Sunday came, and I checked and Hill had 41 points - but was on Cliff's bench. He made a mistake. He got busy and forgot to add Hill to the line up...so he lost to Gullahorn. Nice win Andy. I bet you thought you had the high point didn't you? Tough Breaks. Cliff, lessons learned.

KELCE LATELY vs MR AWESOME

All I want to say is I beat Gabe. Gabe is 0-5 now. If I lost and gave him his first win I would have been so discouraged. So I am surprised, relieved and happy. Sorry Gabe. That's all I am going to say!

TREE HUGGERS vs LONG LEFT BALLERS

Sorry - but I am a bit confused. Not that Scott isn't good at fantasy football, because of course he is...he's 3-2 after all. But, Bebo started his season so strong, winning the first two games and now he has lost the last 3 in a row. Bebo? What up dude? You okay? 76 points is all you got? Scott, great week. You didn't even need Mahomes or Adams but points are points am I right? And congrats on having the Penny back up (Walker) waiting in the wings. I'm happy you will get to watch the Seahawks and your running back at the same time. Nice Win and nice way to steal away the high point during MNF ($20)! Just Huge Games from Mahomes and Adams!

MOOSES ON THE LOOSES vs HOWARD

We say Bye Bye Bye to Mooses on the Looses 3 game winning streak. Taken down by the most unlikely of candidates - Rob Howard who funny as it is - ends his 3 game losing streak. Some dude named Breece Hall put up over 30 points for Howard and both Hurts and Kamara were back in full capacity. Throw on a brilliant day from the Dallas Cowboys defense and you cook up a win! Nice one Rob. Moose - take a seat and accept the fact that even you can lose every now and then. TRADE WITH ME vs BACKDOOR BANDITS

I will be honest. I picked this GIF cause it looked kind of funny and usually I try to make the paragraph about the GIF...but this game was so low scoring and unimpressive that no one is even probably reading this so I am just going to say Kyle won. He deserved the win and so him winning was the right thing.

BOOMER SOONER vs FUNK GUY

And so now we come to the game of the week...the MNF battle between Stu Jones and Dana Cappillino. Dana was finished going into the night with 95.76 and Stu had two monster running backs yet to play - Josh Jacobs and Edwards-Helaire - but was down 22.46. With the Raiders taking an early lead - Josh Jacobs was getting the ball a ton...and in the first half he already had a TD and 73 yards rushing. Stu basically needed 5 points in the second half of the game from these two players. Or just 27 more yards from Jacobs to grab the 100 yard bonus. And just before the end of the 3rd quarter...that is what happened. Jacobs put Stu into the win category. Sorry Dana...but you can put up double digits and secure the win. Not in this league.

“Y/N,” Stella clings to you, refuses to let go of you. The moment you got out of your old truck she jumped at you, crying as you came back. “You’re back.”

“Yeah,” you swallow thickly when Stella tells you how much she has missed you. For now, you will hide you still don’t know if you will stay or go back to New York. “How have you been? I know my departure was—sudden.”

“It was his fault, wasn’t it?” she chokes out, looking up at you. “Why can’t he just admit he wants to go out with you? Dad should stop being so stubborn.”

“Your father and I, we are friends and partners. It’s complicated, you know. Maybe it would be easier if I wasn’t your mom’s best friend. I think Cor—I mean your dad doesn’t know how to express his feelings. And I don’t know if it’s a good idea that I stay here.”

“Why? You are family, Y/N. Please don’t leave us again. August, he doesn’t show it but he’s missing you too. He’s as stubborn as dad,” Stella sighs when you run your hand over her hair. “Dad is an idiot for not seeing how much you care about him.”

“There she is, the long-lost daughter,” Bonham smirks when you walk toward the house, Stella hot on your heels. She refused to leave your side since you are back in town, even followed you home when you tried to change clothing.

“Hi,” you let Cordell’s father wrap you in a hug. “How have things been since I’ve been gone? Do you still drive your wife crazy?” he snickers at your words.

“So, you’ve become an important FBI agent now?” he looks at you, searching your face while hoping you will come back. “I heard about Cordell and you. Why didn’t you tell me you are about to become our new daughter-in-law?”

“Bonham,” you sigh, shaking your head lightly, “this is all a misunderstanding. Cordell and I are only friends and partners.”

“Do you want to tell me you left your home, your family for a job you don’t want out of the blue? I know about the blind date and that you left town right after you canceled, the party,” he slings one arm around your shoulders to lead you into the house. “I am an old man, not blind nor stupid.”

“Love is out of the question for Cordell and me,” Bonham doesn’t say a word. He guides you into the house, biting his tongue. “Emily was the woman he loved, and it will always be her for him. I don’t think he will be able to open his heart for someone else.”

“How about we save the heavy topics for later and have dinner? Abeline made your favorite, and she made a pie to die for, Y/N,” you hate to say no to Bonham, so you nod silently, swallowing the lump in your throat. “You know, if he doesn’t man up and asks you out, I’ll handle this for him.”

“Bonham,” he laughs when you try to stop him from playing the matchmaker for you and his son. “Please don’t try to change his mind. Cordell is—”

“A stubborn man, but he has feelings for you, my dear. He’s like his old man,” Bonham ends your sentence. “Y/N, he’s a good man, with a broken heart. He just needs a little push. Let me push him if I must.”

“That’s delicious Abeline,” you try to break the awkward tension in the dining room. While Stella and August won’t stop asking questions about New York, the FBI and your training Cordell sits opposite you, frowning anytime you say something, “as always.”

“Thank you, Y/N,” Cordell’s mother gives you a soft smile, offering another slice of the pie to you. “You are always welcome to join us for dinner. Cordell should invite you more often.”

“Mom,” Cordell clears his throat, eyes drifting toward you again. Tonight, he sticks to water, doesn’t even touch the beer his father offered to him. “Y/N will come around when she finds the time. She has her own life…maybe even in New York.”

“Dad,” Stella drops her fork. She grimaces, pointing her finger at you. “Do you want her to leave town again? Why don’t you ask her out? If you can go out with that other woman, you can go out with Y/N!”

“Stella,” August tries to spare you another hurtful scene. He’s grown for his age, and you give him a weak smile. “We talked about this, didn’t we?”

“Fine,” grasping for her water Stella glares at her father. “If she leaves all of us because of you, I will never forgive you.”

“I think that is enough,” Bonham speaks up. “Y/N doesn’t owe you anything, Stella. She is important to all of us, but this doesn’t mean she must stay in town and work as a Texas Ranger, not when she has the chance to become an FBI agent.”

“Grandpa,” Stella sniffs, looking at him, pleadingly. “Please. I don’t want to lose her too. He can’t ruin everything for us. Mom died because—”

“Enough,” this time you drop the fork. “It was my fault too. We arrested that man together. I was the one not wanting to give up and your mom and Jason paid the price. The guilt almost ate me up and your father was the one catching my fall,” you admit, pushing the tears away.

“What?” Stella inhales sharply. She always believed you are like Wonder Woman. Invincible and strong-willed. “But—but you seem so strong and…”

“Even the mightest people fall sometimes. It’s no shame to accept help from someone,” you clear your throat, eyes drifting toward Cordell. You know he’s ashamed Geri called you and that you saw him drunk once again. “Some people might say you are even stronger for accepting help.”

“Hi—erm, can I help you?” watching you clean the dishes Cordell awkwardly stands in the kitchen. “Mom said the dishwasher needs fixing. Let me lend you a hand.” He stands behind you to subtle sniff at your hair.

You can feel his chest press against your back when he tries to take the first plate out of your hand. “I—I can do this,” voice a little shaky you try to focus on the warm water soaking your hands, not the heat coming out of Cordell’s body. “How about you go back and chat a little or something.”

“Y/N, will it always be like that from now on? I want you to look at me the way you did before you left for New York,” he begins. “Please at least look at me. Even if you give me a dirty look. Just talk to me.”

“Do you think you are the only person thinking about shit all the time,” you place the plate back into the sink. “I think about Jason and Emily all the fucking time,” you turn around to jab your finger into his chest.

“Baby girl,” you whimper at the pet name. “I’m sorry—” he runs his large hands up and down your arms to calm you. “I should have stayed away from you, but I can’t. Y/N, I feel guilt too.” You huff at his words, not believing he feels sorry at all.

“Oh, you feel guilty for fucking me?” you retort, letting out a frustrated huff. “Do you know why I feel guilty, huh?” he shakes his head, swallowing thickly when tears well up to your eyes. “I feel guilty for getting them killed. I feel guilty for fucking my best friend’s husband. I feel guilty for hiding whatever we have from our families and friends. And I feel guilty for wanting you so bad that I can’t think straight when you are close to me.”

“Baby girl,” he gently cups your face, stroking your skin with his thumbs, “I’m so sorry for being an insensitive asshole. I should’ve told you how I feel a long time ago.” His lips softly press against your forehead, and you sigh deeply, hating he makes you feel weak all over again. “Please, give me a chance to show you I can be better.”

“I need to…I need to go,” you duck under his arm to escape the painful situation. Before you flee out of the house you look back over your shoulder to give Cordell one last glance. “Give me a few days to sort my thoughts, Cord. I just can’t be with you right now.”

“Hey, Ems,” you sit in front of your friend’s grave. “Do you think I should go back to New York? I-I know it’s wrong to love your husband, but I can’t stop my heart from beating only for him.” you sniff, wiping your eyes. “Shit, I can still feel his hands on me. He’s just—fuck. Cordell gets under my skin, Emily.”

Silence is a good friend tonight, so you sit there in front of her grave, drinking your favorite beer. “Do you remember when we first met? I thought you hate me, and you believed I am too cool to hang out with you. But the truth is, back then, I thought you are the coolest girl I ever met.”

“Shit, I wish you were here with me, Emily. I swear, nothing would’ve happened between me and Cordell if you were here. I could’ve never done such a shady thing,” you sip at your beer, sighing deeply.

“...and even now, I think about him and his fucking hands. God, his hands all over me and his lips against my throat. I love when he calls me baby girl. It drives me crazy, and I believe that I will lose my mind.”

“Coming,” Cordell grumbles, reluctantly opening the door to his house. “Y/N?” he gasps when you grab his shirt to bring him down for a messy kiss. “Baby girl.”

“Just shut up,” cupping the back of his neck, you kiss him again, this time slow and gentle. “I-I don’t know what to do. I only know that I want you.”

“I want you too—” you find yourself in his arms, your legs around his waist as he carries you inside his house. “Let me show you how much, baby girl…”

Members of the Fayetteville, North Carolina community gathered for protests over the weekend after an off-duty police officer shot and killed a Black man who, according to an eye witness, was "just walking home."

On Saturday (January 8), Cumberland County Sheriff's Deputy Jeffrey Hash shot and killed 37-year-old Jason Walker as he walked along Bingham Drive.

Initial reports made by police claimed Walker ran into traffic and jumped on Hash's vehicle, but the community nor Walker's family is buying that narrative, as questions mount in yet another police-involved killing.

According to the local ABC News affiliate, the on-board computer in Hash's truck did not pick register any collision with "any person or object." Investigators also noted that Hash's windshield wiper had been torn off and the metal end had been used to break the windshield in multiple places.

Elizabeth Ricks, one of the eyewitnesses to the fatal incident told the Fayetteville Observer she saw Walker get hit by the truck before the driver got out and shot Walker in the back four times. Ricks attempted to render aid to Walker after the shooting, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, just feet away from his nearby home.

Ricks' partner, Chase Sorrell, recorded the aftermath of the incident while others also attempted to save Walker's life. Graphic video shows Walker laying near the back wheels of a red pickup truck while Hash is on the phone.

Elizabeth Ricks held #JasonWalker in his final moments after he was shot by an off-duty deputy in #Fayetteville on Saturday.

She is recounting the moments after she ran to Walker’s aid. She says no officers helped save Walker after he was shot at least 4 times.

This is the second shooting of an unarmed Black man in the area within a week. When Walker was killed, mourners and protesters had gathered at the site where Stephen Addison was gunned down by a white man in an apparent road rage incident.

"I wish we weren't here right now," Shaun McMillan, founder of the Fayetteville Police Accountability Community Taskforce said during a march on Sunday (January 9).

"We should have a government, a police force responsible enough to make an arrest when they're supposed to. We should have a citizenry that respects life enough not to shoot an unarmed pedestrian."

Police Chief Gina Hawkins announced the State Bureau of Investigation is handling the Walker shooting investigation. Authorities arrested a man, Roger Nobles, in connection to the shooting death of Addison.

After taking some time off to cry, understand, and speak with myself. I decided to write something out expressing my thoughts and feelings about everything going on in this country. It’s long, powerful, and provactive but I need to get my voice out. Like, comment, share, have discussions with me when i finish my social media cleanse, but I will not stand silent in times of injustice. 

After seeing and reading the murder of George Floyd at the hands of the police, I was quick to delete all my social media apps and hide away from the “uwu Black lives matter posts,” the underserving claps white celebrities get from doing the bare minimum, and just witnessing the continuous realities of injustice that take place in this country.

As a first-generation Sudanese American, I was nothing but confused and lost in the midst of a growing movement, particularly George Floyd’s murder hitting home the most because the police who were arresting Floyd was responding to a call from an Arab American-owned store. With intersecting identities of being black, Muslim, and Arab, witnessing the anti-blackness rhetoric spew from my religious and ethnic communities clash with my racial identity stirred tension and fear in what it means to be a black Arab Muslim in this country and what my place is in the Black Lives Matter Movement. I often found myself asking, “what is my duty to the black community?”, “Am I too Arab to be black, or am I too black to be Arab?” And “what is my privilege in identifying as Arab and a non-hijabi Muslim?” Black Arabs like me often experience issues with invisible intersectionality, people often forcing us to “take sides” or strongly reside with one of our identities when it sees fit (refer to how people responded to the Ahmed Mohamed clock incident).

But I have come to the conclusion that my blackness is comprised of being a woman, Muslim, and Arab - not separately and that’s what makes this unique. Black Arabs are often finding themselves at the struggle of fighting against racial injustice because of our skin color and against the xenophobic and Islamaphobic rhetorics that have only increased since the beginning of the Trump campaign. However, you all have a duty not to ignore the experiences of black Muslim immigrants in this country, like Yassin Mohammed - he was murdered by police in Georgia earlier this month. Say his name and remember him.

Yassin like me is a Sudanese American - black, Arab, and Muslim but he wasn’t reported or written as such. The media called him a “Muslim man” and yet, our Muslim community remained silent. Why? Because it only brings to light the deep and historical roots of racism that are instilled in our community and we need to address it. Muslim and Arab Americans have a duty to stand with our black brothers and sisters in times of injustice. They were there for us in supporting Palestinian liberation and with us against the Muslim ban - now it is our turn. Listen to Black Americans and Black civil rights groups about their unique experiences and learn how we can best support our collective struggle against injustice. You have a duty to educate yourself and tackle anti-blackness in our community. As quoted in Surah An-Nisa [4:135], “be persistently standing firm in justice, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives” - support your local CAIR organization and others like the Arab American Action Network and the Muslim Anti-Racism Collaborative, who are all standing with the Black Lives Matter movement and doing their best to bring all our communities together to end all forms of racism, discrimination, and injustice.

For my fellow Sudanese, this is our fight too. While we must recognize the centuries-long of cruelty and pain the African-American community has endured since forcefully coming to this country and understanding that their pain is different from ours, we share the same skin and we will go through the same thing they are going through. I can tell you personally, from even the youngest age that I have always been afraid of the police. Why? Because I witnessed the disproportionate amount of cruelty and violence with which people who look like me are treated with.

While our older Sudanese community members will try hard to erase our blackness simply because we have drops of Arab blood, at a tragic reality we have all experienced and witnessed discrimination and racism at the hands of law enforcement. This is hard because we have a complicated relationship with race on the fault line of racial consciousness because our country is on the border between Arab and black Africa. However it is, we are BLACK and we need to have conversations about race in our community. We as Sudanese people are not doing enough to eradicate racism and prejudice that exists in our community as well as our Muslim, Arab, and general US society. The next phase in the revolution is to recognize that these issues exist in our Muslim community, come together with black Americans and African-Americans, and create change to take down these systemic institutions that were never designed to protect black and brown folk.

I will continue to do my social media cleanse, but I welcome those who wish to discuss what my views and opinions are more with me - should you agree or disagree. People who care will know how to reach me. In this time, I am reading, learning, and liberating myself to make a change and I can only ask you to do the same. Sonic and Tails are still embroiled in their fight from last issue, with Sonic trying to convince Tails to stand down so he can rush off to stop Rosemary and Amadeus from doing anything stupid. Tails, of course, refuses, hitting him again, and Sonic angrily tells him that while he understands sticking up for his parents, he's not cool with this whole "punching your best friend" business, to which Tails simply yells that Sonic's had this coming for a long time.

Oof, this is even worse than we previously thought. Rosemary and Amadeus approach the castle's side entrance, and Amadeus is suspicious when the codes he enters on the keypad let him in without a problem, realizing that since they haven't been changed since his arrest this must mean Elias is inviting him in. Indeed, inside the castle we see Elias urging his wife Megan along with their baby daughter Alexis to take shelter inside the nursery while he deals with the revolutionaries breaking in. He quickly orders Nicole, standing nearby, not to wake up his father under any circumstances, just as Amadeus and Rosemary enter the room.

I mean, while you have a point, Elias, the city is hardly going to fall to anarchy the moment it stops being ruled by a monarch. Keeping the peace is kind of the entire point of a democracy. Rosemary calls him out, insisting he should listen to his people who were just calling for a reformation earlier that same day, but Elias insists he won't step down, so Amadeus draws his sword. Elias reveals two honestly pretty cool-looking short double-ended blades beneath his royal cloak, and thus, the two parties clash swords…

And speaking of a clash, Sonic has finally gotten tired of fighting Tails inside the jail, heckled as they are by all the onlookers. Sonic rushes outside, and Tails follows him angrily, and what follows is possibly the most bizarre and scattered string of accusations he could possibly make. He calls Sonic out for, in order: leaving him behind on a lot of missions when he was younger, teasing him when he talked about his own adventures (to which Sonic objects that he teases everyone), and finally not immediately breaking his father out of prison when he got arrested. Sonic is truly baffled by the last one, considering Amadeus wasn't even in jail for a full twelve hours, and then Tails finally screams out the real reason he's so angry - Fiona. Yep, that's right, he's still hung up on Fiona - or should I say, Ian is still hung up on using her as a weird plot point in Tails' character arc.

Okay. You guys already know how I feel about the whole "Tails loving Fiona" thing. It's weird and unnecessary and just doesn't seem to fit literally anything else about Tails' character. But let's assume for a second that it is a valid thing to be upset about and that the whole plot point isn't weird as hell. A ton of things have just fallen into place with his little speech here. Tails has indeed been acting weird ever since Sonic returned from space, and he and Sonic haven't had a single good, honest heart-to-heart about it in all that time. Things have been strained between them for a while, and honestly, I'd say this is even less about Fiona than it is about Sonic being careless and forgetting to show Tails that he actually respects him. He's gotten so used to taking Tails' devotion for granted that once things started getting tense, he didn't know how to handle it, and ended up settling on the less-than-healthy option of  ignoring the problem and hoping it would go away. I've seen plenty of people point to this issue as a bad case of these two being totally out of character, but the problem that people cite always seems to be that Sonic and Tails are fighting at all, rather than what they're fighting about. And frankly, while Tails' initial stated reason for fighting Sonic - to help his parents overthrow the government - didn't make a ton of sense, anyone who knows anything about psychology knows that when one person is mad at another but isn't able to properly express why, those bottled up feelings can come bursting out in all sorts of bizarre ways, including many that don't seem to make any outward sense. And, of course, this can include blaming the other person for things that seem totally out of the blue - because that's not actually what they're angry about at all.

My takeaway from all this is that, again, Tails is not angry about the Fiona thing so much as that the Fiona thing represents a lot of what he has actually been upset about, and he's been carrying around these feelings of resentment that have been slowly building up for years. It's a very believable and reasonable reason for these two to end up butting heads, especially considering Sonic can be quite arrogant and self-centered at times, even without meaning to. In essence, what Tails is ultimately expressing in this whole outburst is that he's no longer content to simply be the forgotten sidekick who always has to take a backseat to Sonic's glory. And if you're wondering why Tails in the comics needs this character arc but not Tails in the games, that very premise is mistaken from the get-go - because he did get this moment of character growth in the games, just under totally different circumstances. Remember how the comics' Sonic Adventure arc never included Tails battling the Egg Walker or saving Station Square from the missile Eggman fired? In the games, that was a very important part of Tails' growth as a character - learning that he could be independent from Sonic and didn’t always have to rely on him or trail behind him, that he could be a hero in his own right. But that entire sequence was cut from the version of the story we got in the comics, and thus, Tails was still left as the sidekick, the little kid, the dependent younger brother without a family of his own. I would imagine that he had to teach himself a lot of that lost independence in the year that Sonic was missing - and it had to be jarring once he got over his initial joy at having Sonic back in his life, the realization that to Sonic, he was still the little dependent sidekick when he'd grown so much since those days. And since his life situation has so drastically changed even in just the last few weeks, all of these feelings have finally come bursting out of him in the form of siding with his biological parents over Sonic. With his above comments about Fiona and about taking away everything he cares about, the entire situation has just become crystal clear to Sonic, and now he wants to make amends, finally knowing exactly what has been bothering Tails this whole time.

But ANYWAY! While all that is going on above, Elias and Amadeus continue to battle it out, only to be shocked by the sudden appearance of a solid wall of nanites in between them. Nicole cheerfully announces from the doorway that while Elias told her not to wake up his father, he said absolutely nothing about waking up Sally, and that's exactly what she's done, with Sally glaring at the two combatants in stark disapproval.

See, this is why Sally should have been involved in the proceedings from the beginning. Outside, Tails has halted his attack after Sonic's words, uncertain about what Sonic is getting at, so Sonic explains himself.

There you go, Sonic. That was what he needed all along - a genuine apology and understanding of his feelings. Tails calms down once Sonic reassures him he's being sincere, and Sonic lightens the mood by joking that Tails has gotten too good at kicking butt for Sonic to want to continue being beaten on by him. Tails says he still wants to talk a few things out, but for now, they agree to team up, rushing to the castle to try to prevent Tails' parents from doing anything they'll regret. They're quite taken aback when they burst through the doors only to find Amadeus and Elias sitting down to a peaceful talk over tea, having agreed on a compromise. The government will be reformed into a combination of a democracy and a monarchy, with a council of six elected citizens being presided over by the king as a seventh member. This way, the people have a government that actually represents them, while they don't lose their monarchical heritage! That's actually probably the best solution that could have possibly been reached, and I applaud these two for having agreed on such an elegant solution.

Oh, Maximillian, so stuck in your old ways. Honestly, though, all things considered, I actually do not think he's a bad person. He's stuck in rigid tradition, but it was something he was indoctrinated into his whole life, and it's not surprising he'd be so resistant to change, especially after everything he's been through in his life. Remember, this guy can't be older than his mid-forties - it's not like he's some old and wizened ruler who has had time to process his life's experiences, he's barely halfway through an ordinary person's life span! That's a lot to deal with in a short amount of time. Outside, Sonic, Tails, and Sally watch the election take place, and Sonic asks Sally why she didn't run for a spot on the council, to which she slyly replies that it's likely for the same reason that Sonic didn't. I presume that means that she wants to have free time to herself to help lead the Freedom Fighters and not continue to be stuck at home, but we don't get a lot of time to think about that, because out of goddamn nowhere, Dimitri shows up in his little head-bubble and scares the living hell out of all three of the heroes, asking after Knuckles and warning them that Enerjak has returned…

Ever since the news came out I’ve been seeing some people saying that Jensen would’ve been better in playing the badass ranger, I know they’re mainly AAs but what do you think? Do you think Jensen would’ve been a better choice to play a character that (from what I’ve read) sounds like Dean again?

Leaving Chuck Norris out of the equation, the real life Texas Rangers aren’t exactly a normal police force. They more akin to a quasi-military operation that were given jurisdiction to pursue felons across county and state lines. I don’t think they actually have to read you your  rights, or at least aren’t bound as heavily by police procedure.   So they don’t really arrest people, they just bring them in to get arrested. They are basically state appointed bounty hunters. Arizona had their own as well, which was partly why I assumed CBS would pick up Walker because the  MacGyver is in Arizona and maybe they’ll try to do cross overs with Arizona Rangers.

So with that said, playing Texas Rangers is not a huge leap from playing demon hunters not beholden to civilian rules.  Jensen could play a badass Texas Ranger if the series were written around his acting strength and his character has an interesting compelling partner, but I not think he would have been a “better choice” because you want an actor that can carry the show solo, and then give him partners or friends to make things interesting. Based on Jensen’s previous works on tv and films, I’m not convinced he can carry a show because he’s a scene stealer.

Don’t get me wrong, suporting actors that are scene stealers improve the medium they’re in though dramatic performance that dominates the audience’s attention, often through charisma, humor or powerful acting, like this imdb’s list of supporting actor that steal almost every the scene they’re in.  But scene stealing is not the same as screen presence because (from a theater perspective) stealing a scene destroys every chance of presence for you and your fellow actors.  It’s like that saying, “Some people tell jokes to make people laugh.  Others tell jokes to make people like them.“   That is the difference between screen presence and screen stealing.   Presence, by its very nature, does not steal scenes, it creates them. 

Jensen is a scene stealer so he needs to be in roles paired with interesting characters in order to have something to steal.  It could be with another personalty actor as long as s/he is interesting.  David Duchovny has one facial expression but his characters are interesting, funny, edgy, and compelling, all projected in one facial expression.  Another actor could have played his Fox Mulder with more range but I doubt the new Fox would have been interesting.

When Jensen was paired with Jessica Alba and Jared Padalecki, he was able to steal the spotlight because Max and Sam are interesting protagonists.  When he was paired with Kristen Kreuk, his character was an insufferable bore because Lana Lang was a bore so there was nothing to steal even though he played Jason Teague the same way he played Alec and Dean.  It’s why the Dean and Cas scenes no longer work because the last time Cas was an interesting character was in season 6, now he’s a plot device and Dean looks like he’s either bored or is tryng really really hard  Acting is supposed to look effortless.

Now this doesn’t mean Jensen could never lead a show, he could if the show is designed around his strengths, such as playing sarcastic, conniving,handsome flirt who has a hidden sensitive side and rise to a hero role or even a leader.  Personality actors are limited in terms of their acting ability yet have a rich and interesting personality that they convey, it’s why blockbuster stars tend to be personality actors, they use the same idiosyncrasies as a foundation of the role.  With the right person to work with, Jensen excels and steals the spotlight over and over again because he allows his character to be vulnerable in order to show his character’s personality.

THE SCANDAL SO FAR: FAIRCHILD BALL – APRIL 5TH

Howard Archibald publicly acts out at the ball raising more than a few eyebrows as he shouted about Blair and Nate's union, his big deal with Eleanor Waldorf, the swan napkins and so forth. He then started singing “Happy Birthday” to no avail to his son Nate Archibald when he tried to talk his dad down from his pick-me-up (thanks a lot for the baggie, Damien Dalgaard!). During this very loud exchange, the FBI came crashing onto the scene and when Nate tried to get his dad's attention, he turned and punched him in his face! GASP. Howard then tried to run but after being clothes-lined by bodyguard Lili Mahdavi, there was no resisting arrest as he was dragged off by the FBI in front of all his friends and family. The room buzzed, many calls were made as who hadn't trusted Howard “The Captain” Archibald with their money? Embezzlement, possession... Punching his own son. Yikes.

Not to mention Emmeline Fairchild then took to the stage to presumably calm everyone down but that...did not go to plan. A disastrous speech made, the playlist changed to Booty Bangerz, Ella Fairchild walked out on her baby (the ball, not Emmeline); the party took a different direction but that didn't stop our Upper East Siders from partying all night long. We can’t let a good outfit go to waste, right?

Oh, and while all this chaos was going down? Jesse Walker and Sapphire Vandervort were busy accidentally outing Alexandra Vandervort’s pregnancy. So followed an uproar on Gossip Girl and one very varied “who’s the daddy?” poll. A big night for Jesse as he also blurted out he knew abut that kiss between then-girlfriend Rose Haven and BFF Dean Dawson. Meanwhile, Jason Walker was being escorted off the premises for punching Scarlett Vandervort’s date Benji Howell in the face. What would his mother say? Then of course came the notable exits of the Hunters, Charlotte Montgomery and Jessica Knightly (followed by Nick Vanderbilt and Faith Middleton) --- reasons to be revealed later in the week.

POST FAIRCHILD BALL BLOWOUT – APRIL 10TH

Birthday: Alexandra Vandervort

In the aftermath of the ball, we saw Nate Archibald try to keep a low profile as the consequences of his father's actions reached important ears. Behind closed doors, no one knows how the Archibalds are coping but if Nate's hair is anything to go by... You know how quickly we can turn, even on our own. Of course now Nate has bigger things to worry about than his "Golden Boy" reputation. Emmeline also went MIA after blowing up at everyone who's anyone (probably for the best) while the video of Lili taking Howard down started to trend.

Alex Vandervort would usually be celebrating a birthday dinner with her loving family but after the baby news broke... Well, they weren't making her dinner. Her friends banded together however and the Walker household was crammed full of her nearest and dearest while she had a good day (hormone-related tears aside). But uh, seriously though. Who's the father? The poll was so extensive... Anyways.

The exits from the ball? Turns out the Hunters and Co. had high-tailed it to Aspen, Colorado as Logan Hunter (previously MIA) was in the hospital after a ski accident. Thankfully our fave leather-clad fool was a-okay and set to return to the UES. Logan's return however wouldn't be the only one we'd see.

SPRING FLING EVENT – APRIL 13TH

How about a little innocent fun after the stress of this month so far, huh? Mrs Hunter and Mrs Knightly sure thought we could use it. They played matchmaker and set up some fun trips and treats guests could go on free of charge. Logan Hunter made his grand return, if not a little bruised and bandaged but that's not all. We also saw the scandalous return of Isobel Prescott (sidenote: what was she wearing?) and William Huntzberger who was previously hiding out in California. Everyone was having fun despite the obvious tensions...

Of course it was also lovely Elizabeth Baizen's 18th birthday! She looked drop-dead gorgeous even if her parents certainly would not have approved of the dress. In fact, most jaws had hit the floor. Could her double life finally be merging into one? Who's to say. It's doubtful she spent her whole birthday eating candy floss and hugging puppies. Anyways, pairs were paired off and sent out into the world and it was almost an event well done. Almost.

Shock! Horror! Accusations. Mrs Hunter's wedding ring and engagement ring had been stolen. Not to mention a few other priceless (sentimentality, you know?) items too. It's like we just can't have a nice day here on the Upper East Side, huh? Especially since while on their dates, Gossip Girl started to send out blasts on just what she thought of every pair and ah, it was harsh. Harsh enough to make one of our own call for a change. It would be later that Jesse Walker would send out a mass text asking for help. Help to take down Gossip Girl.

The "Gossip Girl Takedown" is in effect. Jesse called everyone together with a simple two step plan. Step one: cut off her supply of information. Anyone trying to send goss to GG has been stopped at every turn (Georgina Sparks can be scary, okay?) in an attempt to dry her out. There's been a lot happening. And GG isn't getting the deets, the check-ups and theories- not to mention the fact that she's already been anonymously provoked. Step two: create an event so full of potential drama that GG would have no choice but to show up to get the goss first-hand. How they'd lay the trap from there is still in the works but so far things seem to be going to plan, everyone's still on board. No betrayals, no scandals.
