It's wild how many people took Kristen's line of questioning as her saying Tracker isn't taking her religion seriously instead of what I heard her asking which was:
How many of these people would be here if it wasn't religious Coachella?

Guys, I'm kinda freaking out... we learned last episode that in the abscence of the previously estipulated successors, the position of principal of aguefort would fall upon the student's council president, right?
I'm going to state the obvious for a second. It's a given that Kipperlily is trying to win the election for more reasons than a personal achievement. She was 100% aware of the gap in the rules, which would mean Aguerfort's joke would be interpreted as the only manifestation of his will. This is the girl who said she's busy studying the student government and takes active joy in finding loopholes in the rules (like acing the year bc the rogue teacher found her).
But what is her angle here? It's a powerful position for sure, but the Rat Grinder's must be after something specific. So I started asking myself what specifically would help them in the plan of raising this Forgotten God from the dead. Aguefort's office must have dangerous items aplenty given the incident with the crown and his general personality. Do they want access to that?
Then it dawned on me.
Lydia Barkrock's body is under the fucking school.
For those who don't remember, in sophomore year it was revealed that Arthur Aguefort cloned Lydia while she was sleeping and placed her soul into a new body, hiding her original one in the depths beneath the school. Crazy ass move bc he did that without warning her, but that's what prevented Kalina from permanently killing Lydia in season 2 - upon the clone's death, she gained consciousness in her original body.
It's only fair to assume that Aguefort made this precaution again after sophomore year for the same reason: Lydia's death would entail Bakur's escape. And if Kipperlily is elected and becomes the principal... it's very likely she would have access to Lydia's original body since it's on school ground. Her vulnerable, unconscious body, the only thing preventing the fiend from escaping.
That's really bad, guys. Bakur knows how to do the divine ressurection ritual, he only failed because he picked the wrong place. But the Rat Grinders do know a place that would work!! Kipperlily specifically asked Jawbone about Yes! and he did tell her that this god was created by Kristen when she died in Prom and went to corn heaven. So, a god was born in corn heaven - that's why the Rat Grinders personally requested Buddy Dawn, a cleric of Helio. Maybe by using him, they can pass through the pearly gates to perform the ritual. After all, Arthur Aguefort did the same thing using Kristen.
Basically, if Lydia dies, all pieces fall in place for them. Together with Bakur, they have all the info necessary to pull this God from the Astral Plane back to existence. They would just have to kill her unconscious body and slay the clone holding her soul. What they lack right now is the access, which solved by gaining the position of principal.
PS: Also, there's a rat society under the school?? Perhaps it's close to where Lydia's body is localized?? Idk Brennan is insane

I know the bad kids are weeping, especially gorgug, about how Arthur's hologram/illusion told them all their studying and hard work was pointless, but that doesn't mean it was. Look, the purpose of an education is to gain knowledge and grow. Sure modern education as a whole has corrupted the idea of school and education, but that doesn't mean it's pointless.
Despite how hard it is, the bad kids have flourished this year, it's terrible that they were put through that, but it doesn't mean their hard work was in vain. This isn't a post about how pain or adversity makes you strong, because fuck that. But life isn't easy, there are challenges that you have to endure to get what you want.
Sure, they could have taken the last stand early in the year and if they succeeded, they would have had an easy year, especially compared to the year they had. But if they had taken it, whose to say they would have succeeded. After the night yorb fight, they were level 8 or 9, they are currently 13 but I assume 14 after that last combat. that's 4 to 5 levels they gained since the start of junior year. And that's what levels are supposed to represent, experience. Exp is supposed to show what your character has been through as they go through life learning and growing, it's not a notch on your belt of all the things you've killed to gain power.
If the bad kids tried the last stand at the start of the year, they would have been creamed. Yes, they weren't as stressed, but they also hadn't grown as much and would have been slaughtered. Fig didn't have her paladin levels that did massive damage this fight, Adaine and Kristen wouldn't have access to 6th and 7th level spells, Fabian would only have 3 as opposed to his 7 levels in bard or the confidence to be maximum legend, Gorgug wouldn't have had his homebrewed subclass and pioneered at Aguefort, Riz wouldn't have his higher level spells and abilities that would have meant no haste which meant no double sneak attacks that helped them so much this fight.
This is what sets them apart from people like the Ratgrinders. Because as much as the Ratgrinders seem to hate them for being 'favored' by the school, the Bad kids have earned every scar and bruise, every stress token, every spell slot and point of HP to get to where they were today. They beat the deadly challenge in a way that no one has done before and they got a 100% on the questions, not a single one of them went down, the proctor was barely hurt. There will always be people who take the easy way out that doesn't mean the path you forded was wrong

The Report Card – Fantasy High Junior Year Ep 15
The Buddy System
Welcome back to Fantasy High where the Bad Kids are still fighting for their lives and, more importantly, their grades.
After a sterling start to their Last Stand exam, they still have a lot more test to get through before they’re academically out of the woods and they need a perfect score on the written portion to pass which is incredibly harsh but that’s Aguefort for you!
This is a very long episode where everyone gets to be so cool. Truly, you can see how competent all of the players and the characters have become as they carve a bloody path through wave after wave of enemies.
As usual, it doesn’t really make sense for me to do a blow for blow recap of this fight but it’s absolutely worth watching. It’s an absolute delight from Siobhan and Emily irl making up a limerick in tandem to pass the Performance section of The Last Stand to Gorgug rolling truly more Nat 20s than I’ve ever seen in my life and almost solo-ing a *Purple Worm*. There’s not really any commentary that I can add to improve on just how amazingly they do in the episode. They’re forced to use the auto-pass stamp twice but only on the two most unreasonable things Brennan asked them to do–write a 300 word essay longhand in five minutes and do a (gag) math word problem. With those two stamped, they get 100% on their written exam. They even get some extra credit (partially due to Siobhan’s IRL LOTR geekery).
Not only that, but Gavin (the proctor) only gets hit (I think) once and never actually goes down! None of the Bad Kids do. Hell, Adaine–their squishiest member–basically just sits at her desk the whole fight answering questions and slinging spells and she’s fine! Happy ending, A+s all around, roll credits, right?
No, of course not. Nothing is that simple–not that this was simple. They can’t just be the first party to ever pass The Last Stand without dying and have it be done.
During the fight, everyone–but especially Kristen–has been suspicious of Buddy. She does an Insight check and sees that he seems on the level but that’s not enough to quell her suspicion. Near the end of the fight, she eats the Vulture King eyeball (granting her a minute of Truesight) with the intent of seeing who Buddy really is–a reasonable instinct considering Ruben was in disguise at the festival.
She sees that Buddy is Buddy. She *also* sees Kipperlilly Copperkettle invisibly aiming a crossbow at Gavin. KP clocks Kristen clocking her, smiles, and lowers the crossbow, instead choosing to SLIT BUDDY’S THROAT. Buddy falls to the ground, absolutely DEAD. Not making saves. FULLY DEAD. A blue scaly hand touches her and they both vanish–Kristen can tell that the spell was Plane Shift (which is necessary for getting in and out of this testing pocket dimension). She frantically looks for a diamond to cast Revivify but her pockets have been picked and Buddy’s Revivify diamonds are gone as well.
They finish the fight victoriously but Buddy’s death casts a pallor on everything. This was supposed to be a fight to the death but Buddy was the one person whose death wasn’t figured into the bloodbath. Gavin tells them that they pass the rest of the year with A+s but is shaken and thrown off kilter by the seemingly random murder. Kristen tells him what she saw and Gavin says that he was observing so he can vouch for the fact that none of them had anything to do with the murder but this is a crime scene and they have to call the Fantasy FBI. The Bad Kids are all super worried about Gavin’s safety since Kipperlilly was going after him initially, but in the end they agree to take him to the Council of Chosen office in Bastion City so he can be under their protection and to leave Fig’s phone (juiced up by Gorgug) in the pocket dimension with Buddy’s body in case there are any shenanigans (you know, besides him getting murdered which was already a pretty big shenanigan).
The Bad Kids drop off Gavin and then take a bus back to Elmville with a new mission: CSI Elmville, let’s get this bitch arrested!
Editing to Add: This is a very cool post by @thisisnotthenerd that covers all the Last Stand Qs and monsters in the form of Gavin's proctor notes. Check it out!
Detention
Kipperlilly for Icing Buddy
This was gonna go to Brennan for making a bunch of stand up comedians do math under a time limit but I can’t not give it to Kipperlilly here. She smiled. She looked at Kristen, smiled, and slit Buddy’s throat. There was no gritting her teeth like it was a hard but pragmatic choice. She was about to take the life of someone who fully trusted her and she did it with glee. There is something *deeply* wrong with this bitch, and we knew that already but hoo boy this certainly clinches it.
Honor Roll
Gorgug for DESTROYING that Purple Worm
Everyone was in top form this episode but if I have to give it to one person, I’m gonna give it to Gorgug for single handedly holding back a Purple Worm, a monster so terrifying that there is an official D&D show where the premise is that all the players have to fight an OP monster they’re almost certainly gonna TPK against and the title is “Faster, Purple Worm! Kill! Kill!” Our boy didn’t even drop. That’s Maximum Legend Behavior.
Random Notes
Kristen has the thought that she interrupted a truly horrible thing that KP was about to do and wonders what the crossbow bolt was loaded with. I didn’t mention it in the recap but I wanted to call attention to it because Brennan called attention to it.
Also Riz got some footage of Gavin clearing them with his tie and Gavin sent their scores to the superintendent (not Jace to be clear–Tectonya Karkovnya who we met in The Seven).
Ugh I’m so annoyed because if KP and Oisin get questioned under Zone of Truth they’re absolutely gonna be dosed up with Devil’s Honey.
Buddy’s throat was slit and there’s no rune on his chest so presumably he can be revived if he’s brought to a hospital–hell Kristen could probably do it with a higher level spell–but I’m worried someone’s gonna slap that rune on him while his body is alone.
Do we think KP killed Buddy without a thought because she knows she lives in a world with revives and she knows it’s temporary or is she just like I truly do not care what happens to this (literally) corny ass cleric. I don’t know him like that.
Once again, I love Adaine’s div powers so much. “You crit actually.” What a legend. Also love Fig coming to her with doubt and her just being like don’t be crazy and slapping a reticle on the monster to help her aim. I really love their friendship.
Adaine is my favorite Bad Kid and I am first in line to throw down wrath on anyone who tries to mess with her. That being said, my favorite non-Bad Kid character is Aelwyn who has absolutely tried to kill Adaine and attacked her on multiple occasions and also is wanted for murders she absolutely did. My point here is that Oisin’s next moves will determine if he’s “surrounded by bad influences/I can fix them” material like Aelwyn or, “Throw out the whole man” material like that cop Antiope had a crush on. I am still rooting for the former but I will flip on a dime, do not doubt me.
I tried that essay writing task and with 25 seconds left on the clock (I stopped when I finished making my points) I was only at 174 words and my hand was seriously cramping. So I would say, valiant effort from the Bad Kids but that was a *rough* ask.
Kristen’s Bless really came in clutch! Honorary mention to her for that AND for having enough intuition to keep an eye on the Rat Grinder situation. I wonder if Brennan contemplated that might happen.
Fig bug zapping all those flying monsters was chef’s kiss.
Did Bobby Dawn fail Kristen specifically so she’d have to take the Last Stand? If so, he is indirectly responsible for his grandson getting iced. Hope that tastes bitter when he finds out but for all we know he’s one of those ends justify the means guys. Bleh.
This season really is a love letter to all that came before it. The questions, the pentacorn, Adaine’s go to move even magically just being making a fist and letting it fly. I really love how much love Brennan clearly has for this world. And the 100% score the players got on the test shows they obviously love it right back!
Loose Ends
It is Fantasy High tradition for us to get a huge lore dump near the end of the season that ties together a lot of disparate clues and I hope we’re getting there soon because there are a LOT of loose ends we have yet to tie. Here are as many major ones as I can think of right now in case it helps spark productive speculation amongst y’all.
Who killed the Loams?
Why the move to Loam Farm for Frosty Faire?
What specifically was Ruben trying to do with the symbol when he was playing at the festival? Presumably the thing Grix was trying to prevent?
Who killed Professor Badgood?
What were the exact circumstances behind Lucy’s death?
Who was able to put the rune on both of their bodies and what exactly was the goal there?
What is the Devil’s Honey being used for? What about the other things Aelwyn was getting for KP like Ambrosia? Why did she want a Cloud Rider engine?
How is Jace involved? Why is he manipulating Ruben?
How culpable is each individual Rat Grinder? Are they all in it together or are there varying levels of how involved they are?
Why were Ankarana’s domains wiped from heavens’ computers?
Why did Ankarna become corrupted and why was she forgotten? Were the celestial gods (Sol and co) involved?
How did KP find the rogue teacher?
Also what’s her damage? Why is she obsessed with Riz? What are her anger issues about?
What’s her current goal? Who is she loyal to (if anyone)? Why did she want to know about Kristen creating a god exactly?
Why did Lucy change her god and then change it back?
Why was Buddy specifically requested by the Rat Grinders?
Why is KP running for class president? And is Mazey being principal a purposeful machination or just a weird thing that’s happening incidentally?
What’s up with Spy’s Tongue Curse and Kalina only being able to say Ragh’s name? Is it related to that conversation between Kalina, Adaine’s mom, and Jace from SY?
Why wasn’t Ivy surprised to see Fig in disguise as Lucy who was at the time fully dead?
What’s up with the party vision that Adaine has now had at least twice?
Where is KP getting her money from?
What made the Rat Grinders become the Rat Grinders when they started as the High Five Heroes?
What's up with the shatter stars infecting the soil around Elmville?
Where exactly is Cass right now?
What does Ankarna want?
How does Ruvina fit into all of this?
Feel free to hit me up if there's something you think I should add to the list! Can't wait for next week. I'll see you then!

my thoughts on Tommy's sexuality:
I really like the idea of Tommy being a full gay man instead of bi, because I feel it gives a more interesting contrast to Hen.
on one hand, you have this woman, right? a lesbian. a lesbian who is not ashamed of her sexuality and openly declares her love for women and her same-sex attraction and does not hide any part of it. she walks into that firehouse and hours into her first day says "I really like kristen stewart" despite already knowing that she is not respected!!
and the fascinating comparison is on the other hand you have this guy. a super buff guy. a veteran who enjoys, and I quote, "monster trucks and craft beer." this guy is ashamed of his sexuality. he actively hides it and goes as far as to (possibly) pretend he has a girlfriend, he makes kissing motions when someone makes a joke, he stays silent when the open lesbian gets harassed at work (although in defense of that one they didn't 100% know she was a lesbian), all coming from a place of protection. he wants to belong, he knows the harassment that awaits him if he admits it, so he doesn't. and that makes his character and his contrast to hen that much more interesting for me.
also as a sidenote when Hen is making her speech in the station Tommy noticeably shrinks back like he's trying to appear smaller, which let me say it was NOT planned at that time for him to be queer, but it shows a different interpretation of that in hindsight, I just have to point it out.
now this is not all to say that Tommy being bi is bad, or that this contrast with Hen can't occur if he happens to be legitimately attracted to women, but personally I think it makes it that much more interesting if he wasn't.
it's just this really intriguing case of them both understanding each other and belonging to the same community but they are at vastly different stages of acceptance

If FrostNova joined Rhode Island, do you think she'd make friends with Muelsyse after Lonetrail? Powerful Ice and Water users, part of a good cause that they built and was their life for, but had to watch it be corrupted to evil, both with a close relationship to a powerful and indomitable shield user, and both grieving what could've been if they weren't betrayed.
First off, thank you; this is such an involved question involving characters I adore and you're awesome for thinking it!
While they do have those things in common, I don't know if they would strike up a friendship. At least not in the traditional sense. More like kindred spirits?
Their personalities might clash, but Mumu is close to even the hardheaded Saria. Yelena is straightforward, Mumu is deceptive. Yelena quite possibly has one of the worst cases of Oripathy, and is a physical danger to anyone near her, but Mumu is close with Ifrit, despite having to stay away from Originium for her own safety. Even if they don't strictly do things friends often do, like hang out, I think because of their shared experiences and commonalities, they may be able to understand certain things that others can't.
Yelena is powerful both in spite of and because of her illness, it's a double-edged sword. Muelsyse is unlike any other race on Terra; the power that she, as an Elf, holds is unlike anything we've seen from other (non-godlike) characters. Yelena has solidarity with other Infected, her siblings. Muelsyse is alone. Originium ultimately wrecked both of their lives (Yelena's health, Mumu's sense of home).
Talulah and Kristen respectively gave them dreams and a future to look towards, and that is the most devastating of all. Tal promised a home for Infected, Kristen promised a place where Muelsyse wouldn't feel so estranged. The amount of respect and faith Yelena and Mumu had for Tal and Kristen made their subsequent "betrayals" sting even more. They dedicated their lives for their causes. They were kept in the dark of what was really happening--even though Alina urged Talulah to confide in Yelena, while it was implied that Mumu was conspiring with Kristen (before LT gave her role to Nasti which I'm still bitter about). In the end, Yelena chose not to hate Talulah despite all the pain she brought, and Muelsyse is holding onto the possibility of seeing Kristen again.
Their relationships with Patriot and Saria are also great because they give us a closer look into who they are when not putting on a face. It's arguably some of their most humanizing aspects. Yelena is just a sick girl who was saved and adopted by Buldrokkas'tee, and she even has moments where she's apologetic for causing him trouble. She could've been a better daughter to him... while Muelsyse can't keep up her facade of an intimidating Rhine Lab Director in front of Saria, who, despite not trusting her 100%, knows she isn't heartless; Mumu was shocked at Kristen signing off on inhumane projects. Yelena prioritized her Yeti Squad, treasuring her family above all else. Mumu's acts of kindness went unnoticed because she helped Ifrit, Saria, and Silence behind the scenes--their lives were made better because of Muelsyse.
Ultimately both FrostNova and Muelsyse are girls who just want a place to call home, and have been handed tragedies on a platter in response.
All this to say that I'm not sure if they would be friends, but it's kind of nice knowing someone else out there has essentially lived your life, and thus knows what it feels like. Knowing someone can empathize and understand how much those familiar beats hurt. It's comforting.

So, like, what I got from this episode is primarily that Kipperlilly Copperkettle has never done anything wrong in her life.
Okay, let me rephrase that.
Yes, she's the villain doing villainous things that she shouldn't. But "she's jealous of tragic backstories" is not as absurd as it would be in the real world because, like, that is actually how Spyre works. Everyone laughs at "oh she's mad she's an NPC" but actually literally think about what that would be like, especially when you go to a school where the goal is to be a main character. It would be infuriating to constantly have the world revolve around a cast that does not include you.
Like, everyone knows how annoying it is when someone you play D&D with has Main Character Syndrome. Now imagine if that were real life and their MCS was cosmically vindicated over and over. I was slightly annoyed with how much stuff this season happened to connect to the Bad Kids this season, but now it seems like either that was all intentional or an incredibly thematic coincidence. Like, imagine that MCS scenario and even when you try to kill them you can't help but accidentally trip into a bunch of their bullshit. It's truly impossible to even begin to understand how the pressure of that situation would wear on someone's sanity because the real world simply doesn't work like that.
Also, let's be clear about something: She is 100% unironically completely factually correct about Kristen's campaign. She started it literally just to spite Kipperlilly. Because she had a slightly off-putting energy during their first meeting. In which Kristen and the others said all this and how much they disliked her right in front of her like she wasn't even there. Kristen gave a speech to a steel mill and got her head clipped by a buzzsaw for the sake of bullying Kipperlilly long before they had any reason to suspect she was up to something.
So I feel vindicated in Kipperlilly having a good reason for slipping off the slippery slope and that she has a legitimate grievance. And I'd say, "but she shouldn't be mad at the Bad Kids for it", but again, they were legitimately horrible to her so even if you shouldn't respond to being rude with murder there's hardly much incentive to not be mad at them personally in the course of raging against the universe being structured around them.
But most people will just see it as "she's mad she's boring" so I, like the mythological Cassandra, will continue to be an unheeded prophet.

FHJY EP 9 Theories/Notes
So, a bunch of theories, notes, etc. I have after FHJY EP 9
So, Jace as the first note. Jesus fucking christ, how are the Intrepid Heros forgetting all of Jace's shit?! Like, I'm rewatching the Adventuring Party rn and HOW ARE THEY FORGETTING HE TALKED WITH KALINA WHEN SHE WAS EVIL? Like, watching SY the first time that really stuck out to me (because i liked Jace and felt betrayed). When Aguefort appeared I was certain they would mention it to him and they didn't?! So I was prepped this season to expect evil Jace. I am so convinced he is evil. Like, Gilear going on this cruise, Aguefort missing, Grix going mad and getting killed? He is so evil.
As far as I'm aware we don't know what Jace's subclass/sorcerer origin is so my theory is he is a Divine Soul sorcerer and is related to whatever god the Rat Grinders (RG) are trying to summon. Either that or multi-classed as a paladin or warlock or something (or possessed by the god ig and that's why he could see Kalina because he always could?) Anyway, he's also obviously helping the RG because how the fuck could they have gotten away with murdering Lucy, much less a fucking professor without his help.
So Porter... Look, I'm still not certain Porter is evil. A shitty teacher and mentor? Yes, absolutely. I saw some theories he is a paladin for this god which I think is interesting but I'm not 100% sold on this theory.
I'm excited to learn more about Agent Clark this season. In The Seven most of the people involved with the Council of the Chosen are baddies so I am not sure that is the case or not. I like the idea he is doing the right thing for the right reasons and may help the party later on but I'm not holding my breath on that. I am so god damn proud of Gorgug, good job snorting at him bby!
Excited to go to the Mountains of Chaos. A little bummed that it was the one location I didn't put on the Bingo Card that did show up in the Seven but you win some you lose some.
Kristen doing the right thing with Yolanda and Lucy made me ugly cry. Like, I'm so happy that people are finally gonna find out but Im certain that the Rat Grinders are gonna frame the Bad Kids for this somehow.
Overall: Very good, emotionally heartwrecking episode and I am so excited to see what happens next <3

last night's ep spoilers
i know this may not make total sense but baron was manipulating the realm cassandra gave kristen and her party. brennan calls out that it is a safe haven that baron made into a death trap. this is cassandra's magic and domain, not ankarnas. baron is also born of riz's lie that stems from his deepest fear/the thing the nightmare forest showed him. i 100% believe that baron is the nightmare king's child, not ankarna's, like has been floating around. which makes cassandra baron's stark father and that when baron says his father doesn't like using their name anymore, it's because she's become cassandra now, not the nightmare king

So I pre purchased tickets for Love Lies Bleeding for a few reasons. One, it's getting great reviews and has been since it first screened at SXSW. I already liked the idea of it but knowing it works is hugely exciting. If you don't know, Film Noir is one of my favorite genres and every November my friends and I do Noirvember which started a decade ago with them going, "Film Noir seems cool but I don't know anything about it". Well guys, I did know about it and it was about time to put that education to use so that first year I chose 5 movies that I felt would help demonstrate the characteristics of the genre and wrote essays about each one with what to look for and what identifying tropes of the genre were there. Since then I have put in far less effort but every year we try to grab some movies that are significant for various reasons to the genre. My point is, I love Noir and really appreciate French film critics for inventing it after the fact. So Love Lies Bleeding is not a Noir, it is a Neo-Noir but for obvious reasons it's a genre that always interests me for obvious reasons. It's a Neo-Noir because you can't make film Noir anymore, part of what makes it film noir is when it was made and that no one has ever set out to make a Noir, if you are you're making a Neo-Noir. But I love them, too, especially sun soaked ones. Thirdly, Kristen Stewart. First of all, I think she is a tremendous actress who just does great work and her projects just get more and more interesting. They don't always work but man, I want big swings rather than boring. There are so many safe movies I give higher ratings to than interesting failures but those safe, bland mediocre movies all fade into the background, I still think about the interesting failures. So I love that she tries cool projects and the truth is most of her work. She always works in them. But the thing is, when I heard she was doing this I just knew it was perfect. My favorite Noir figure is probably Humphrey Bogart. That's not an out there selection, the guy was undeniably cool. And I was like, yes, let Kristen Stewart be Humphrey Bogart. I think she could 100% pull off that. I mean, I don't think she is in this movie, she's playing a different kind of a mess than the cool character who keeps getting in over his head but when it comes to vibes of someone who can be my favorite sort of Noir protagonist it's her. Which is a long way of saying I have tickets to go see the movie and resisted posting Kristen yesterday cause my brain was like, "We'll post her after we see the movie". Welp, I didn't make it cause she has been all over the place and looking very good. So I caved and made it exactly one day. Today I want to fuck Kristen Stewart.

Conspiracy theory I didn't come up with: Part of why Hollywood is so weird with Looney Tunes and Muppets is that they resent the voice work involved. Even dumbass execs know you need Kermit to sound like Kermit and Daffy to sound like Daffy and they HATE that they can't just recast them with some random celebrity.
HMMMMM… i unfortunately don’t know enough about the Muppets to throw my two cents in there, but with LT—i both see where you’re going with this and somewhat object at the same time.
i guess my point i’m about to bring up just as much proves you right, but they DID get away with some celeb stunt casting with Space Jam 2 (lol) thanks to Zendaya and Gabriel Iglesias. and hell even going back to TLTS, you have Kristen Wiig and Fred Armisen… Frank Gorshin voices Daffy in Superior Duck.. so there IS the fair share of celeb stunt casting with these characters, which i guess does in a way sort of prove your point, but to me still makes me think it’s not entirely it
one of my biggest complaints with modern LT revivals IS, however, that they never seem to write the characters with Mel Blanc in mind. i realize the man has been dead for 35 years and we obviously can’t raise him back, but the originals were so often written to cater to his voice talents and his quirks and his specificities, and while you have incredibly talented voice actors like Eric Bauza or Bob Bergen or Jeff Bergman or Joe Alaskey (RIP), the one little ingredient missing from their deliveries is because they aren’t written with Mel in mind. Mel’s involvement is just as important to the characters and their personalities as the directors and writers and animators
which leads me to my next point in that i just think that nobody understands the Looney Tunes characters, simple as. they don’t! they are not some big happy family à la the Muppets, who, in turn, are not some big happy family. likewise they are not mindless drones who drop anvils and blow each other up and repeat the same 2 bits over and over and over again. i don’t think Space Jam 2’s ineptitude is a product of execs losing their minds over the inability to stunt cast—i just think you don’t know your Looney Tunes if you’re going to genuinely play up a Bugs Bunny death scene as a sincere, heart felt moment. come on!!!!!
i still think a lot about the excerpt in Jerry Beck’s 100 Greatest LT Shorts book where one of the contributors—whose name escapes me—had a WB exec tell him in the ‘90s that nobody likes Porky because “people don’t like pigs”, and his quip in the book was “well, i’m people and i like pigs!”. likewise the whole political correctness bit in Back in Action is true to life! the Speedy complaint surprises me less but the whole “first they tell me to lose the stutter, then they tell me i’m not funny” actually happened! WB hasn’t known what to do with these characters for half a century at this point and it’s unfortunately nothing new. i wish it were just a matter of grievances at celebrity voice casting, but i really do think it’s just because nobody knows how the hell to characterize or approach the characters.
likewise, that is very much by design. the original run is lightning in a bottle. its brilliance is the product of so many ultra specific circumstances and benefits and histories and trial and error that you just can’t really replicate. i mean, you can, but even with the most meticulous studying and planning and adaptation and mathematical calculations and all that other jargon, even if you put all that into your work… you’re still not Chuck Jones with Chuck Jones’ life experience, you’re not Bob Clampett with Bob Clampett’s life experience, not Friz Freleng, not Bob McKimson, not Frank Tashlin…
i am a loud proponent of thinking that honoring these characters correctly and accurately and respectfully is possible. i think it can be done. i think it is possible to study all of the quirks of the directors, of the writers, the animators, the characters, how the characters talk and walk and play off of each other, how the directorial tone is dictated. you have to be a complete nut to do it, but i think it’s possible. but that just goes back to the original question of: well… why try and make carbon copies of the originals when the originals are right there? (which, i admit, is another question that i myself get huffy about and am like “just because!!!! why not!” but i can’t act like i can fully deny it either. it’s a valid question.)
ANYWAY. i just went on a huge tangent, some of which is completely unrelated to your ask and your point so MY APOLOGIES! i do think you have something there, but i really do think the main perpetrator is just a lack of understanding and awareness. or, we do have adaptations that show potential and they aren’t given the light of day to be realized and help set the course a little because we need to think of our tax write-offs first. god forbid!

One of the funniest parts for me was Emily, not Fig, Emily the person, seemingly trying to steal Gertie from Kristen. That was great. This encounter has been pretty cool but I want it wrapped up quick next week cause I want the Kipperlilly lore-dump. What is that girls damage? I'm sure it's something really petty, cause that's the vibe she gives. I'm 100% sure the awful thing the Bad Kids did to her was just being more accomplished than her.
I'm actually really enjoying the Last Stand but I think it's wild that Riz didn't read the file before the test. Like I assume that was Murph deferring to the plans of a fellow DM but in character that's crazy.
I really don't know what Riz specifically could have done to tick her off because freshman year all he was really doing was looking for the Maidens which would be a weird thing for her to have an issue about.
It seems like we have a lot more fight to go but I'm hoping we at least get a clue to what's going on with Kipperlilly in the promo for next week!

BAD KIDS GAMING HCS
Nobody asked but i cant stop thinking abt it so
Fabian - canonically doesn't know what mobile games are, much less actual videogames. He sort of sees them as pointless (why do quests and adventures in a videogame when he could just do them in real life?) Of course the bad kids pull him into their gaming sessions, though he spends most of them asking what the controls are again and raising an eyebrow at their shenanigans. Ragh sits him down and makes him play some sport based video games which he does enjoy, he can get really into it if you give him time (he yells so so loud) he also gets into ddr style games bc he likes beating the other bdkds at them. Videogames are a good excuse to hang but he'd rather go out and play football irl.
Kristen - coming from a heavily sheltered and what i assume monitored family, kristen probablyyy isnt all that into videogames. At most i think she'd have some mobile games like idk candy crush on her phone, like fabian she'd get confused and spend her in game time running around and just watching the others play, she goes along w the others shenanigans v easily tho and loves doing silly bits while playing.
Riz - Riz is the type to play window games on their families shared computer for hours on end. Stuff like sudoku, pinballs, or solitaire. He'd love those games like the nancy drew mystery ones, or those games where you find items like I Spy. The only downside is he gets unhealthily fixated and will spend 3 days getting to lvl 100+ on Tetris if you let him, obsessed w 100% games and making funny number go up. Surprisingly good at rhythm games.
Adaine - into open world games, like fallout or outerwilds. Will spend days writing and churning out backstory and lore for her in game character. Veryyy picky and wants every decision to be true to their newest ocs backstory, will spend a solid hour on the character creation screen. She also loves more violent shooting games, although playing online with strangers gives her anxiety and she cannn get gamer rage, she'll get fixated on getting stuff like headshots and Winning and Being a good teammate that she'll start shaking and have to step away from playing for a bit. Single player fighting games w blood where she can turn her brain off and just fight are more cathartic for her. I feel like she ends up doing insane shit in them like saw and hack off limbs and go full dark story mode route and then regret it so so much and lie awake at night not sleeping bc of it and delete the save file. Its her dark secret shell take to the grave.
Fig - plays a large range of games, mainly more colorful and silly goofy ones she can play with the badkids. Shes sort of a little nuisance in games tho, she will troll and grief a lil bc she finds it funny. In singleplayer games she does love being a huge stinker and do silly stuff like pickpocket and get caught or accidentally set a bomb off in the middle of a cutscene or glitch her character to a-pose, she does a bunch of shit and laughs and doesn't take it seriously at all. Like adaine she also gets gamer rage. she gets them both banded from online for a month bc they team up to cast a spell on someone thru the screen. LOVESS shit like guitar hero and skater games sooo much, also into those wwe type games. Cant stomach horror at all but will make the rest of the kids sit down and play horror games w her so they can laugh and scream together.
Gorgug - he tends to like more older games, say in the style of star fox/loz and stuff. His parents gave him and older gaming system when he was younger n he still has it around and collects games for it, its seeing a lot more use than it originally did bc now he has friends to play with. The type of guy to still carry their ds around. I feel like hed also modify and rom hack stuff for his friends. He likes going to the arcade in person and playing there than sitting in front of a computer.
Ayda - yes im including her shes a gamer girl in my heart. I feel like she loves life sims/complex puzzle games, stuff like slime rancher, portal, animal crossing. She has 1000+ hours into a single sims save file. She spends hours and hours building and working on the most elaborate farming system for whatever new sim shes getting invested in. She especially loves organizing in games, she gets a bit antsy playing more survival based games with the bad kids because they leave their systems so unorganized (shes def the type to redo the entire base from top to bottom in dont starve while the rest die off screen). neat and orderly decoration is soo fun for her and the bad kids try not to step on her turf too much. refuses to play multiplayer if it's with anyone else but the badkids, but if anyone would start a gaming channel its her. will do obscenely gay cutesy stuff w fig n game. They build their own little base and junk and pretend to hosts weddings n stuff. Shes also very into speed running and breaking games with glitches to figure out how they work.

Putting my incredibly loose theory out there before the episode drops tonight:
I genuinely believe at the very least KLCK is knowingly doing “immoral” shit for her own benefit. HOWEVER. I am also fully conspiracy theorizing that the reason KLCK has been so sneaky specifically in regards to “shielding” Oisin from what she’s doing is because she’s afraid of him being susceptible to getting rage-crystaled due to heightened feelings of anger, betrayal, and injustice.
I also fully believe that while the rest of the Rat Grinders may not have been treating Lucy fully in good faith that ultimately she was killed as a result of HER getting rage-crystaled. Lucy being overtaken with feelings of anger, betrayal, and injustice. We already know she wasn’t happy with the “rat grinding” OR the implied pressure to change her deity based on how Yolanda and Ruben spoke of her.
Then the Lucy situation ends up being what sparks the heightened concern in Kipperlilly towards Oisin since he’s pretty conclusively shown to be the second most prone to actually stand up for what’s “morally right” based on what we’ve seen from him thus far.
Which I believe will still ultimately culminate in Oisin finding out and being overtaken regardless. Due to spoilers from that one battle set in the trailer where they’re in a flying boat (*I look at the unaccounted for cloud engine*) battling against a blue dragon (*I look at the rage-crystal wizards just being insanely jacked versions of themselves*).
Either accidentally due to the lack of communication between The Bad Kids who believe The Rat Grinders to all be 100% immoral revealing everything to Oisin under the assumption that he’s been in on it.
OR on purpose at a specific time and place, meaning that rather than KLCK being worried about Oisin being overtaken in general she’s worried about it happening before she wants it to. Which with this theory would also imply to me that maybe someone being rage-crystaled is necessary to bring Ankarna back and that Lucy was intentionally rage-crystaled but in the wrong place (as KLCK was inquiring about how to create/rebirth Gods and discovered it needs to be done in “the correct place” in order to work). So the ritual failed and she’s trying it again but needs it to be done right this time.
Throwing this theory out into the ether because I genuinely believe that from the episode previews Kristen will bring Lucy back but Lucy will still be dealing with the rage-crystal consequences (explaining Brennan acting out someone gasping “awake” and going straight into pained/angered screaming)
