The ride to the tower was quiet and you kept fiddling with your finger avoiding eye contact with the “god” in front of you. When you did arrive tony told you guys to sort out your problem’s and stop causing havoc for the team with your nonsense bickering. The team was out on a team dinner, you and Loki weren’t invited for messing up the mission. So here you were cooking a meal for the two of you. Loki looked over you shoulder every once in a while. “When is it going to be done im bloody starving!” He rumbled at the counter leaning over. Rolling your eyes your turned around “its almost done ok why don’t you just shut up and wait” he scoffed and walked away.

Dinner was finally done, the smell filled your nose making you smile. It was one of your favorite dishes and you knew it tasted delicious. In fact you would have been a chef if you had no powers and were “normal”. “Loki get your ass down here dinner is done!”

As you set the table Loki came down, looking over at him you swore you never saw him better. He was wearing grey sweats with a tight white shirt his hair damp while he was drying it off his arm’s flexing. “Are you gonna stare all day darling” he chuckled and you rolled your eyes. 

“This is delicious, gosh you should have told me sooner you knew how to cook!” He scarfed down his food. Scoffing you looked up at him smiling “well you never asked just assumed i was bad at everything..” you softly spoke.

Comic-Con has come and gone! It’s been an exciting time for Sonic comic fans with news about the upcoming Scrapnik Island miniseries, a live mural painting from Adam Bryce Thomas, Gigi Dutreix, and co., and more. Also, Penders was there

For a while now Penders has been saying that SDCC 2022 would be where he released the new hardcover reissue of Mobius: 25 Years Later with an added extra chapter and a few names changed, now packaged as The Lara-Su Chronicles: Beginnings. (Before anyone asks: yes, he has the rights to rerelease his old Archie Sonic stories following the lawsuit, and yes, he says he’s going to pay the artists royalties. Kudos to him for that, at least.) While I take every creative endeavor the guy announces on Twitter with a massive grain of salt for obvious reasons, I thought this one might have some small hope of actually happening because it’s mostly just a collected volume of some comics that already exist and not a whole new graphic novel

So, did that happen?

Nope!

But he did show off a new build of the iOS-exclusive The Lara-Su Chronicles motion comic app, which is the main way he plans on releasing these things. He’s shared a few new videos on Twitter, too, so let’s take a look at those. This is what he’s been working on all these years

Let’s tackle these in chronological order. First up: the M25YL “remaster.” (I'm just linking directly to the original tweet because Tumblr won't let me upload more than one video.)

From that first page it's immediately obvious that the hand lettering is gone, replaced with a font. Between the few character names changed to maintain consistency with TLSC and the many translations he's doing, digital lettering is probably just easier on that front. I won't knock him too much for that, although the fact that he kept the same random words bolded is funny to me

No, what really knocks me on my ass here is when we get to the second page and we see that the new motion comic format and the need to show more of the backgrounds means that not even this "remaster" is safe from Ken's horrible fucking photo backgrounds. Here's a direct comparison of how he ruined this panel, originally drawn by Steven Butler and colored by Jason Jensen:

I should add in here that I don't hate the use of photo backgrounds on principal. You can do some really cool things with mixed media! As is true of basically everything in art, any technique can be cool if it's used with the right intent. I was a Homestuck reader in its heyday, and it made cool use of color-altered photo landscapes and images taken straight off the internet mixed with the cartoony characters and original elements. But this is not that. This isn't trying to be mixed media or alternative or counterculture or whatever, it's just a shoddy attempt to save time on a hamfisted tribute to Silver Age comics

It's also worth noting that Angel Island, which looks extremely tiny here, is in fact the same shitty image Penders has been using as his personal logo for years

Next up, an excerpt from The Storm, the prologue chapter starring Geoffrey that will be included with the rerelease of M25YL. He's been posting previews of this for years

This one also has voice acting! Bad voice acting!

When asked what happened to Geoffrey's signature accent, Penders said that he only had access to an American actor, and that he'd rather not have him use a fake accent. The audio is apparently also temporary, although how much will or won't be changed in the full release is impossible to predict. Either way, the wooden voice acting does Ken's typically clunky dialogue zero favors here, and it continues to baffle me that he thinks all of these motion comic bells and whistles are somehow worth all the added time and effort when it's been over a fucking decade and he still hasn't released the first of seven planned volumes

Also noteworthy here is that we actually see the point where the timeline-altering energy wave or whatever hits? I guess? I assume that's what's happening, because the art style deliberately changes from Ken's best approximation of what he thinks Archie Sonic looked like (which already isn't great, although the dog girl is almost kinda cute) to his new style for TLSC, which. God. Look at that profile view of Geoffrey

Lastly we have a preview of the opening of The Lara-Su Chronicles: Shattered Tomorrows, AKA the actual first volume of the series. It's the scene of Lara-Su walking on the beach and shedding a single tear over how Knuckles is dead, as one does

It's not as noticeable in the video, but I need to link to the full res version of the shot of Lara-Su sitting on the rocks so you can appreciate how truly fucking horrendous the jpeg artifacting is. At the risk of referencing Homestuck too many times in one post, this is truly some Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff level shit. I don't know how he did this

And, at the very end we have a special guest appearance from the one, the only... the unlicensed likeness of Anthony Mackie that he is still fucking using for this character. Despite his appearance changing slightly in other art, this page still very much just uses a redraw(?) of Mackie's IMDB profile photo

And that's it! If you've been following the updates on this project for years like I have, you may have noticed something

None of these pages are actually new!

I'm pretty sure we've seen every single one of these before. Some of them are from years ago. If there's actual new material in this preview build of the app beyond the addition of speech bubbles to some of these pages, it's not present in these videos. Penders says that his next priority after recharging from the con will be releasing TLSC Beginnings (the M25YL rerelease + that Geoffrey chapter), but it's hard for me to believe he's anywhere close to releasing anything in the state these previews are in, unless he's secretly sitting on a whole bunch of pages that he just didn't want people to read for free at his con table

As usual, though, Penders claims that the responses from Comic-Con attendees were positive, particularly in comparison to the constant dunking he's subjected to on Twitter. People were even buying his prints. (He also posted a photo of Karl Bollers visiting his table. I don't know what Bollers thought about the app.) My kneejerk reaction is that I find this kind of hard to believe, but it's also like... I dunno, people are just generally going to be polite at a con, nine times out of ten. Most people are not going to walk up to someone at an artist alley and be like "hey bro your prints look like dogshit." It isn't the place for that. They don't wanna cause a scene by getting into an argument in the middle of their expensive con trip. I also don't doubt that there are a lot of people out there who probably see the old Archie Sonic comics he always has for sale at cons and go "oh hey I've heard of that" or "oh I read some of those as a kid!" and then realize he was one of the writers and wish him luck on his new endeavors, blissfully unaware of decades of obscure Sonic drama. And while it's well documented that I don't like the guy or his work, I don't think that's a bad thing! People are allowed to be polite to him. I do not want him to get pelted with fucking tomatoes every time he goes outside

But the thing is, most of the feedback the guy's getting is either polite well-wishing within the context of a busy convention, or people spamming him with pictures of Donkey Kong and telling him to retire on Twitter. And so he's shutting out the latter, and taking the fact that people aren't beating his ass in the QRTs at the SDCC show floor as a sign that he's on the right track, and that Twitter is just full of haters looking for ammo

And like. He's not wrong on that last point! People blame him for all sorts of shit he didn't actually do and take many things wildly out of context and spam his replies for fun

DC crossover anon: OKAY OKAY SO CONSIDER… Kate and Dick Grayson. The PARALLELS. Do they meet at a rich person gala and Kate is trying to figure out if Bruce is Tony Stark rich dude or Justin Hammer rich dude and realizes what better way to infiltrate this sus billionaire than by getting tight with his kids? They both absolutely know how to ballroom dance. Do they meet because Kate decides to take some aerial classes??? DUO ACRO ROUTINE MY BELOVED?!?!?! (OH my goddddddd Dick teaching circus classes? Universe mash up where the Avengers et al and the Justice League et al come together for some reason and Nightwing and Hawkeye are impressed with one another in a professional way and then Bruce(Wayne) and Steve(Rogers) decide to set them up by sending them on fake missions together only because Kate is Kate it keeps backfiring and the fake missions all become real missions. It's OK though because they all come together to defeat an interdimensional villain and then there's a frantic makeout session

Kate and Dick would be able to pull off one of my favorite tropes "we've been dating for 3 1/2 years but everyone thinks we just team up to fight crime." Everyone thinks the teamups are because their teamup name is NightHawk. Obvi. Whatever version of them getting together, a total of three people know. One of them is Damian who Does Not Care Thank You Very Much (he does. He cares SO MUCH. when is the wedding he wants to know he had BETTER be a GROOMSMAN, RICHARD. He's already training Lucky to be the ringbearer. But he super mega doesn't care he thinks they're idiots.)

UGH SECRET IDENTITY SHENANIGANS (assuming a crossover where Kate can maintain a secret identity for more than 30 seconds) does the general public think that Dick is dating Hawkeye? That Kate is dating Nightwing? DO THE BUTTS MATCH????

How long before she gives up and starts calling him Dick? She absolutely can't at first, stop LAUGHING, Tommy, and at first the Batfam thinks she's kind of posh and weird like Damian because she's calling him "Richard" does he even actually want to be called Dick she doesn't know!

How into it is Dick when they go to some super shitty bar in Bludhaven and she kicks his ass at pool? He is so super into it its not even funny, honestly any time Kate kicks his ass he is VERY into it.

Also I was looking at this on my phone and my eye caught the phrase "struck out" and I am obSESSed with Dick striking out with Kate (trying to date her to get intel on her dad?) while Jason actually gets her to agree to dinner and obviously Jason will never let Dick forget this ever. After dinner--during dinner?--something happens and that's when they realize that Hawkeye (who has been flirting with Nightwing and they're sort of crime fighting dating) just went on a date with Red Hood (they shoot at each other once a week) and that Kate TURNED DOWN the guy she has actually sort of BEEN DATING FOR TWO MONTHS???

Tim texts the entire Batfam about this. Babs steals Kate's phone and texts her entire team. It's terribly embarrassing for Dick and Kate but really brings their teams together.

DICK ADVISING KATE ON GETTING A SIDEKICK?!?!? Damian trying to convince kid!Loki to be Kate's sidekick? DAMIAN AND KATE TEAMUP WHEN DICK IS SICK!?!?! And just. The amount the Batfam would adore Kate. Because she's Kate, because of how happy Dick is when he's with her, because she shares interests with like all of them, Kate and Damian SWORDFIGHTING

I can't decide if Dick's acrobatic training is the only reason he can beat Kate in a fight, or if it's the only reason Kate can beat Dick in a fight (I think they're pretty evenly matched.) On the one hand, Dick's use of acrobatics in his fighting style is pretty unusual and even trained fighters are going to be unprepared for some of his moves. On the other hand, I can see Clint either showing Kate some tricksy moves from his circus days, or Kate just picking it up by observing him. Idk it would be very funny because the acrobatics thing is unique, it gives Dick's moves an edge and he's honestly not used to losing fights and then Kate just. Fucking clotheslines him.

Now that I think about it,

Okay. okay. For Kate, fighting Dick is a lot like fighting Clint. They're built similar and have the acrobatics background. Kate is used to fighting people like Dick. Dick is less used to fighting people like Kate. You remember that picture of an eagle sitting next to a housecat, where it was captioned "I eat things like you, but not your size/I eat things your size but not like you"? That's them.

They also do yoga together after a long night of fighting crime. Also Kate is so protective of Dick it's kind of funny, Dick is ABSOLUTELY capable of taking care of himself but he is SO OKAY with Kate taking care of him, of her being a little feral about him in public, he wants the title of Boytoy. Tim says that Dick is Kate's poor little meow meow and look. points were made. Dick is just SO GOOPY about her in private but if you so much as look at Hawkeye in that tone of voice Nightwing will wreck your shit.

Now I’m really curious about your thoughts on the other counselors. I don’t really have any strong opinions on them much tbh idk why. Maybe it’s the whole “horny teenager” trope or something

Sorry, this is totally out of the blue, but did we ever get a good reason for god slayer magic, or is this just a case of shitty mashima worldbuilding once more and it only exists as a magic because he thought it would be Cool? This has been tormenting me all night. Like, okay, even though I have qualms about it, I understand at least where say like- Gray's Devil slaying magic came from, conceptually, as an idea. It fits with his trauma of having a demon kill his village, it like, comes back around and SOMEWHAT had something going for it, if that makes sense? But God slayer magic is like… where did it come from? Why does it exist? Why do only two people use it as far as I know? These also apply to demon slayer I guess you could argue but even more so here. Are there even gods in Fairy tail? Deities, demi gods, even? Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if Mashima just realised that he didn’t have any plans for god slayer magic, so he shelved it entirely, considering from memory the guy from Grimoire's heart died or disappeared. Also, apologies for any inaccuracies or ignorance, i've a poor memory and it’s been a while since I've read GMG or Tenrou, this is just plaguing me. Thank you for your blog, Its wonderful to see someone else who actually wants to analyse the text and the characters, as well as the fashion- its always been my opinion that Mashima, at least Old school mashima, despite all his artistic flaws, actually seemed to kinda know what cool clothes or outfits were, which I appreciated.

You are absolutely right. I’m in the full belief that God Slayer doesn’t need to exist because every time it shows up it’s just a contest of ‘hah! I have your magic but BETTER!’ and our characters always have to power of friendship our way through it because how else are we going to beat a girl that can eternally heal herself??? It’s ridiculous that Chelia’s magic is Wendy’s magic without the only weakness that balanced out the overpoweredness. It’s literally a jibe-- hah, you have weaknesses to your magic? Lol, imagine that. 

Dragon Slayers have motion sickness to balance the overpowered nature out and make them less ‘deus ex machina’, but God Slayers? Nah, they’re too cool for that. Apparently it’s not Mary Sue if our characters make an asspull first. Whatever was the point of the whole ‘you can’t eat my element but I can eat yours’ shtick? At least Wendy’s way of solving her problem was interesting because she uses healing. Natsu just... emptied his magic... and absorbed Zancrow’s... because he can just do that, yeah.  

And the idea of gods in Fairy Tail is so much more mythical than dragons, which really puts to question if it was ever necessary. The only times we see a ‘god’ mentioned is in some of Erza’s armour, I guess? And that one Take Over: God Soul bullcrap. That is literally the only time it’s come into use for what it was made to do, and even then, both of those were better off not existing because seriously, what on earth? Mashima just ran out of ideas for real. I’m not even going to mention the ‘dragon gods’ in 100yq. Mashima’s not going to bring any god slayers back into the show anyways, so there’s really no point. 

On a brighter end, though, I do like the irony that 2/3 of our god slayers met unfortunate fates. Zancrow’s one of the few characters that had an onscreen death, and Chelia lost her magic. It’s like the irony of people suffering from divine karma from trying to hard to become god-- Icarus, and all that. Even their magic had a black tint to it compared to the Dragon Slayers, like they’re ‘evil versions’ or something. It’d be cool if something bad like that happened to Orga, too, cause it’d add some fascinating lore of why this magic is so rare. Dragon Slayer Magic is a curse that turns people into dragons, so maybe God Slayers have a worse one. Maybe they try to turn into gods, but fail, and all inevitably die young, and that’s why it’s Lost. 

it's like tragic that the overwhelming response to some guy(?)'s bad, shitty video is for all the hot trans posters and their cis friends to laugh and AGREE with the person's claims. but that's the thing! there are worse things about the claims in that video and communication with other reactionaries which reveal not only a type of radicalisation, it does also speak to (if we're to take them at their word, idk) a seeming lack of access to proper information or proper outlet for regret-- "any trans person would know this"-- so with that, there's even worse things here about the implications of social isolation and the sort of people whose entire brand is about targeting, further sequestering, and indoctrinating isolated persons. i mean sure, this person could be lying, which seems likely since TERFs are ultimately grifters (and, i'm not exactly following this closely.) but regardless of whether or not they believe what they say, we do know this doesn't happen on its own. transphobia/transandrophobia/transmisogyny are not innate, inborn qualities. and it doesn't reflect in a person's appearance! transitioning-- maleness, masculinity, whatever-- doesn't create it! despite what some may say, you CAN transition without community and not wind up a little asshole! and you can transition among fellow trans people and the security this affords can encourage vicious behaviour as much as it can encourage compassion! there's no monolithic "community," at all. there's only the ones we nurture. not everyone has the wherewithal/spoons to be community leaders, either, and people with different needs/abilities deserve security as well.

i've been trans for about 100 years now and i "don't" "look like" "other" trans guys; i also have 100 medical conditions that started either at birth or puberty and were neglected by doctors until very recently. conditions that modify the physical "results" of testosterone, conditions that impact my physical comfort (so i don't bind anymore,) and conditions that just... enhance my proclivities and i can't or don't really want change them. but doctors didn't know about a lot of this so being without information and experiencing unbalanced or inconsistent results of HRT was really upsetting, and i have a different trajectory than other trans people, and who knows if i'd be the same or very different. as far as balding, yeah there's a protocol for that but i can't do it because it brings back my awful period. but i wasn't told that, either. however, i did find other trans men talking about it, only when i learned which words to search for!

paraphrasing one twitter user's reaction, "i dont think he'd've been a cute girl either. some people are just homely." yeah, i don't really expect acceptance or celebration of my life or what i look like in it.

people are Doing Transness in different ways all the time, so saying this is what always happens when you try to transition alone just isn't true. not everyone is enmeshed in helpful communities. i've been asked for help and advice on transitioning only to be dropped when i no longer served that purpose or when my path or description deviated from what someone wanted to hear. this, also, happens.

to be extremely clear: transness is good. non-linear, interrupted, resumed, disabled and mad transness, transness in sources or mediums unrelated to HRT, hairy, hairless, fat transness, non-white and non-"western" transness... there's room. it's good. it can be hard, sure, but wasn't it hard "before" too? or was it instead just passively, mysteriously shitty?

it's much more difficult to find disgruntled, regretful trans people (especially where there's increased and less policed access to affirming care) unless you have a certain particular cause to seek out and weaponise those complaints against now and future trans people. this doesn't (or shouldn't) mean contemplating regret is forbidden-- the opposite actually; there should be as much room for productive, understanding conversations and resources for any fear, confusion, or shame as there is for positivity. medically, trans people are over-analysed and pressured to toe the perfect line of Not Wanting It Too Much and playing the role per medical expectation. so of course as much as we do want it and might even be very happy with ourselves, unrelenting attacks on transness means combating that with inflated positivity. that's not bad, because ultimately it's all true even if we're not fucking... ON!!!!! all the time. who can be?! the only thing these hyper-positive declarations obscure are the quieter, conflicted feelings that are genuinely difficult to untangle, especially publicly-- because the alternative to excitement and gratitude is weaponisation by transphobes and TERFs. it's very fucked up that dangerous people ingratiate themselves and their brand to isolated and invisibled persons.

but just... feeling sad or conflicted about interruptions in your sense of physical continuity? Um, Yeah. trans people understand this, babes.

it's really embarrassing seeing thin/fit, white, able, "properly" hairy or hairless trans people comment on how this is ALWAYS attainable. it isn't! it literally isn't! allowing yourself to be the spokesperson of concerns and groups you don't have and aren't part of is embarrassing! it's dehumanising to expect some kind of profound, objective, universally-recognisable "glow-up" from trans people no matter who that expectation is coming from. and the response to someone saying "i'm ugly, i can't believe this happened, my body's ruined, no one told me about these effects" really shouldn't be "yeah, you really are and you always would/will be!"

i have 0 affinity for the person in that video! i'm not talking about him. faggy bald transsexuals do deserve to hear they're hot because they are. no, it's not part of some gatekept Trans Agenda when this doesn't magically materialise. the gatekeeping is medical only (and we trans people can do very little to sway doctors even within the restrictive bounds doctors designed!!!!!!! we didn't design it.) maybe you're just kind of mean, and/or there are conditions outside of your control that keeps you from community. but also, we do know that in all of society-- including trans society, as subject to cishet society-- that certain features and bodies ARE prioritised. infinitely more bodies ARE shamed and marginalised in almost every sector with devastating consequences. it IS harder to find people who aren't just attracted to non-conventionally beautiful people, but even people who just like... tolerate them (their experiences, their concerns) in their friendgroups. and, of course, much of this outrage and disgust, from all sides, is around what's seen as proper or improper "masculine/masculinised" traits in ALL genders-- ESPECIALLY outside the bounds of social acceptance.

acatually we're far enough in the season that i already can say definitively which ones are ass and which ones are good.

Dead Mount Death Play. a reverse isekai about a necromancer who reincarnates in the body of a rich kid that just got assassinated. he gets mixed up with the mafia and the police and the girl who assassinated him and real life supervillains. tonally all over the place, but absolutely an incredible ride. 10/10 loving every second of it

Kamikatsu: Working for God in a Godless World. ok hear me out. hear me out please im begging you. this is the one about the guy who gets killed by his dad during a cult ritual, reincarnating into a world without gods and getting his life saved by the god of his dad's cult. yes its really weirdly horny constantly. yes the cgi is absolutely god awful. yes 30% of the scenes are 8bit isometric view renders. yes its obvious theres like half of a budget on this one. but by fucking god if theyre not doing the best with what theyve got. the plot is batshit, the world is dark, its wholly inappropriate. but something is just so charming about the way they lean into how bad everything looks.

Why Raeliana Ended Up At The Duke's Mansion. a girl ends up in the plot of a novel she read during her life where her character dies in the first few chapters, so she strikes a bargain to get fake engaged to the duke in order to save her life. it's pretty, the story's good, raeliana is a fun character, i cant make up a reason to put it any lower than this beyond 'its het' and thats not fair.

Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear Punch. i just really like yuna ok? shes a good girl. shes dressed as a bear. shes too anxious to hang around people her own age so she makes friends with children. its just a cute show. i would put it at #3 if i was being more subjective.

Konosuba: The Megumin One. ive always said megumin was the best cast member of konosuba. shes still the best. it is a lot of secondhand embarrassment tho bc she is still , by definition, megumin, and she can still only do one spell a day. im not talking about her chuunibyou. that fucks and is cool as hell.

Summoned to Another World for a Second Time. we're getting into the ones i care less about. a guy gets summoned to another world 5 years after he disappeared from it last time and has to save it again. this one i liked a lot more at the beginning, the middle was kinda mreh, but its picking back up. the characters feel kind of Nothing tho.

Smartphone Isekai Season 2. i dont really like harem anime and this one is Very harem. its not usually horny about it but this season feels like theres not like. any plotlines. he will say 'i want to go do this' and then he'll go do it and come back and everyone says 'good job mr guy heres another wife.' i learned that the robot girls suck and fuck each other so thats a plus. as far as the isekais i dont care much about, this one's at least mostly harmless.

The Aristocrat's Otherworldly Adventure: Serving Gods Who Go Too Far. some guy dies and reincarnates as a 3 year old noble child who gets cheat-level blessings from the gods and can kinda do whatever. it just feels like anything that happens in this show is basically nothing. its a nothing show. he got a dog i guess.

My One-Hit Kill Sister. a guy gets reincarnated in another world and he sucks shit and his hot sister beats her head against the hospital wall until she also comes to the other world with him, and she is so powerful but he ends up taking credit for it so everyone thinks hes hot shit but hes just regular shit. a demon shows up and also wants to be his hot sister so he now has two hot sisters who protect his weak shitty ass. hes a cunt. thats all there is to say i hate this guy he fucking sucks. he pisses me off. fuck this guy.

I Got A Cheat Skill In Another World And Became Unrivaled In the Real World Too. its in the title. this is one of those 'guy was really fat but now hes Super Hot And Skinny And Everyone Loves Him' shows, which is kinda vile conceptually. he finds his dead grandpa's secret gate to another world and he can go in and out whenever. the show doesnt focus on like. anything interesting. theres no plot or anything. the show puts him in a Situation and then he Handles It and everyone says 'wow skinny hot guy youre so cool and hot i have a crush on you now' and that part goes on for twice the lenght of the situation he handled. usually in the real world. sometimes in the isekai world. they almost had a plotline where he was supposed to go to the castle, but at the last minute he said 'no actually i cant go sorry'. its a nothing show. its nothing. theres nothing here. nothing is happening. another girl shows up and has a crush on him.

okay so day shift is an action comedy buddy (cop) movie about vampire hunters but really its just one guy (jamie foxx) whos name is...literally bud? anyways the basic plot is somehow this guy isnt divorced he just lives like it and he hunts vampires and he needs to hunt a lot super fast for money otherwise his wife and kid will...move i guess. like this is such an i have to win my wife back plot but theyre not even divorced??? so heres the bullet list of shit in this movie

-> so one we have to get it out of the way that this is a vampire movie and vampires have a long history of being representative of more than just monsters no matter how many movies make them just monsters like this one. and this shit has gone on forever like dracula with its antisemitism and xenophobia released in the 1800s and netflix literally JUST canceled their latest antisemitic vampire show so. thankfully these arent antisemitic vampires they're just well...lets get into the politics of this comedy movie

-> the villain in this movie is... audrey san fernando? i literally had to look that up i had no idea what any of these characters were named. and well shes like the head honcho vampire and a rich real estate mogul or something. shes also mexican. this movie takes place in la and well theres um... mentions of her bringing lots of...vampires...to la and buying up land for them and also she mentions starting a vampire-human war at some point. and this isnt a big jump at all like the movie straight up tells you shes mexican she crossed the border and had to leave her daughter behind and bring her over later they brought up ideas of immigration and also??? connected vampires to human sacrifice and the aztecs? like the fucking climax takes place at an aztec pyramid thats just...under la??? so we also have ideas of who really owns the land who was here first (i mean audrey is literally like probably close to 150-200 years old so like out of the cast its literally her and the rest of the vampires who like ive said are mexican and native coded)

-> i should also mention theres a conversation our buddy cops have after killing a bunch of white high school vampires. where seth (ill get to him in a bit because oh my god) is like man... vampires used to be human dont you feel bad for killing them? and jamie foxx is like nah theyre all (sure literally but still) inhuman murders and liars which well sure fine but again vampires are often used as a metaphor like...theyre inhuman blood sucking monsters because x group are inhuman blood sucking monsters not the other way around

-> okay lets talk about seth now. so buddy cop movies need a huge contrast between the two leads, ones strong and cool and damn the rules he's gonna get the job done and the other is weak and ineffectual and tied up in regulations. which is what we have with bud and seth, which is only slightly better because thank god theyre not cops too. and here i have to go on a tangent. if you look at conservative media and often especially political cartoons, you'll quickly sort out that theres a lot of qualities that make someone a liberal aside from their actual politics. like thats why you'll see conservatives often just say pronouns in bio but theyre really saying look at this idiot liberal + a bunch of transphobia. and seth has a lot of those. hes not vegan/vegetarian but he is a pescatarian and pretty much any diet without steak makes you a liberal. same with gluten free which seth also is (or at least just buys gluten free muffins). seth "doesnt believe" in guns. hes a white collar office worker. he uses a satchel which they call a manpurse, and hes often effeminate in other ways -he's fine being called cupcake as an insult by a manly man, his boss...hits on him? he likes cats and fashion and hates violence like it just goes on- and the masculinity he does have in his impractical suits isnt good enough compared to the real men/vampire hunters hes around. and these are all the jokes in the movie btw plus all the ones about seth pissing himself like youre supposed to laugh at these things and think theyre stupid. especially when compared to how cool and masculine bud is. oh my god this is so long and i still have shit to talk about im sorry

So Gabe Summers is back as of today’s X-Men Red and I’m reminded all over again why I don’t consider myself a fan of the character, lmfao.

Like I’ll forever be a fan of his POTENTIAL and the character concept he BEGAN as but like.....’actual Vulcan fans’ are all like UGH I HATE WHEN THEY WRITE HIM LIKE STORM CAN ONE-HIT KO HIM and I’m like 10/10 can’t relate cuz I’m like UGH I HATE WHEN THEY WRITE HIM AS A MURDEROUS IMPERIALIST DICTATOR.

He’s like the perfect case study of a character who was literally DESIGNED to have a tragic backstory that made him incredibly sympathetic and let him debut with an established vendetta against both Xavier and the Shi’ar that was completely justifiable.....

And then by the end of his very first story arc he’d done such completely over-the-top terrible things to people who unlike Xavier or the specific Shi’ar he had gripes against HADN’T actually ever done anything to him....that there was no longer anything remotely sympathetic about his character or his grievances.

Its like.

From a narrative standpoint if nothing else.....

WHAT’S EVEN THE POINT OF THAT?

Yes, of COURSE its true that sympathetic backstories aren’t justification for doing terrible things, like just because you were hurt doesn’t mean you get to hurt others, but like....what, you really felt you needed to create a whole character who does nothing BUT embody that specific point?

Its one thing to make that point as part of their narrative, but they made that the ENTIRETY of his narrative, right out the gate, and its like.....I feel like Brubaker thought he was adding nuance to some conversation by being like ‘here’s a guy who yes bad things happened to him and yes he’s awful not because of that but because of the bad things he does’....but....that’s not any more nuanced a take than ‘if your childhood was shitty enough you should be allowed to do whatever you want, as a treat.’

Its just....ridiculously un-nuanced in the other direction, is all? You’ve simply swapped out one bad take for the opposite bad take without changing your actual altitude an inch. That’s a lateral move, my guy.

What if you just created him to be a character who does good things and bad things because of his fucked up and complicated backstory that left him fucked up and complicated, and as PART of his narrative, the point exists that yes, your childhood gets an F- but that doesn’t excuse paying that same energy forward, but that doesn’t have to eclipse literally everything you built into his backstory to MAKE him that way in ways only fictional characters can be designed because they’re not real people making their own real choices.

Because as is, its like....you wrote a story that introduced him as this guy who the Shi’ar and Xavier fucked over massively.....and that’s basically never come up again or gotten any focus SINCE his debut because ever since then, whenever he’s on the page everyone is too busy focusing on how terrible Vulcan is, look, he just murdered another puppy.

I just don’t get the POINT of that degree of...disconnect. Like, what are you even AFTER with this guy, what’s the appeal of even writing him? If you want him to be SO unjustifiable, why did you put so much intent into designing him to be so sympathetic only to then turn around and make him as unsympathetic as possible? If you want him to have at least SOME degree of tragedy, as in ‘he didn’t have to be this way’ (because like, no, he didn’t, there’s SO much more you could have done with his character), then why have you gone to such lengths to leave no room for focus on anything tragic about him because he’s just The Literal Worst?

Like, if you’re going to center a character like this, the framing and context of everything he does ALWAYS has to matter? Like, so, so much? Otherwise.....its just like. Well okay, so that’s a character, I guess. That’s a thing that character did, I guess. There’s never going to be anything deeper than that because its like you went and drained the pool of all possible depth immediately after filling it but still before anyone even had time to get in and splash around. 

You gotta have some kind of LINE with this kind of character, some point at which....oh holy crap, I think I just hit myself in the face with the realization this is the literal theme I’ve been building my entire Greek mythology space opera/Ekidna story around, lmfao how did I NOT put that together until just now, looooooooooool.

how do I get over being cheated on? I was in a relationship with a boy for just over 2 years (both 16 now) and he broke up with me out of nowhere (on Oct 2) he claimed it was for "mental health" and he "needed space to find himself", but coke to find 2 weeks later he's already with another girl. the catch? he's with a girl that I made him block ON OUR 2 YEAR ANNIVERSARY because she called him hot. royal/ludroth | prior familiarity: plenty | name[s]: Danger, Hayaza a long-standing fave. i didn’t realize just how much these things Are Iguanas. interesting they take after green iguanas more than marine iguanas. very straightforward design; 1 basic beast+1 weird trait, solid execution and does its thing very well. 9/10

jaggi family | prior familiarity: somewhat | name: Meteor I like the little jaggis most bc of that funny little barking animation they have in battle and they have a very fun posture in general. jaggia looks kind of bad. great jaggi is Okay. i like it Enough. one of those ones there’s nothing standout good or bad.... by this point i think theropod designs are hard to make Not Generic feeling unless you do something really weird with ‘em. jaggi’s solid, but all it’s really got is funky colors and the crest. fur might've been a cool opportunity to get wild with it but it’s whatever. 7/10 i feel like jaggi more than most is hurt by stories’ being an rpg; hard to get a feel for what its pack tactics are like when its flavor is limited to ‘just have another one show up’.

They're really good at making these herbivores be like nice normal believable Animals, but not so great at making them standout designs. turtle/ankylosaur is a great combo on paper, but the execution is almost TOO seamless? there’s just not much to talk about here. 7/10 it’s actually lot nicer in mhworld style? 8.5/10 for that one ‘cause the shapes are stronger and the shell is much more noticeably a Thing

A lot of the traits and shapes are cool individually but on the whole it's just kind of weird and unappealing to me. the punches and uppercuts are funny though. 6.5/10

yian garuga | prior familiarity: maybe? | name: Leafy Definitely my fave of the yian family, it's like unnecessarily edgy but we do take those. The spikes give some much need accenting to the rest of its body so the head detail feels more balanced out. I like the purple also. 8/10

slagoth | prior familiarity: none monhun has this weird habit of slapping dog noses onto random shit. the rathalos family has it, zinogre has it; it always looks a little goofy but most of the time it’s whatever. this is not one of those times though, i fuckin hate this thing’s face. dog nose dog jowls, weird eyebrows, triceratops crest feels really slapped on. The skin folds thing is a cool gimmick but there's not much to the look in stories art style. colors are also... eh? they’re not bad but it’s not doing anything to help the look and sort of just winds up reading as a weird caterpillar.  4/10

gargwa | prior familiarity: none please god fucking bird bird bird bird bird. this dumbshit? this motherfucker? he is so goddamn round. I love his shitty useless little wings and stupid wide beak and the lines of green highlight feathers. Pinecone type of guy. 15/10

duramboros | prior familiarity: none There’s a big difference between guys I've never heard of before, and guys who SURPRISE me. All the other ones I had no familiarity with have been like. "Yeah ok that's a monhun type beast, I could have seen that coming". This one is a 'wooooah ok now what is THAT'. it does the "being a literal mountain" thing really really well and just has bonkers shapes and ornamentation and awesome color use across every part of it. 11/10 design, 9/10 only cause it isn't entirely to my tastes.

If Ryuji knew what the day was, he wasn't showing any outward signs of it - White Day had just become another day to him, just another motion to go through - were it not for the occasional glances of his classmates exchanging little gifts and chocolates, he probably wouldn't have even known that it was White Day at all, but hey, it was a hell of a lot more tolerable than Valentines Day was and it was hard not to appreciate the sentiment behind it - why not take a day to appreciate the girls who had taken the time to give you a gift or make you some chocolate?

Though not that it had ever been much of a concern for him, as he wasn't typically used to receiving chocolates or gifts from girls, a fact that he had since become at peace with, perhaps a little begrudgingly at first.

I also know a lot of music that is weird because it sounds very ethereal and or weird and out of time.

Some artists I recommend here are: Branko Mataja (not only his album covers are really good), Joe Meek (legendary producer but what discussion about him there is is rarely about his work but about his tragic and messy life), Charlie Megira, Link Wray and Mamman Sani. I feel like these guys get usually labeled outsider, a term I don't particularly like because it treats queer and mentally ill or just generally weird people like Zoo Exhibitions while not actually having any stylistic consistency.

However the four guys I mentioned above do have similarities like a focus on lo-fi instrumental music, use of electric equipment/sounds/instruments that haven't been done in the way they did (Charlie Megira technically doesn't use technology/sound in a way the others do, considering he was mostly active in the last 20 years, but he uses it in ways his predecessors did without giving it a commercialised sheen while also carving out some darker and noisier sounds)

My opinion on outsider music is definitely complicated because the art of people that are othered by our society is important, but a lot of audiences are very weird about it, and it does more bad than good to focus on arbitrary similarities in the lives/experiences of musicians while ignoring their waaaast differences. Like none of the five artists above ever met and except for Link Wray and Branko Mataja who lived in America weren't even living on the same continent meaning they definitely weren't a scene or something.

It's also worth noting that being mentally ill doesn't define somebody's art, meaning that poining at somebodys art and saying they could only have created it because they were mentally ill is dumb.

Not to mention that a lot of "outsider" artists were diagnosed and institutionalised at a point in time where mental illness was understood very differently and diagnosis was used as a way to other/label people who did not conform.
