bitch no it isn't. QUEER is not a slur. It's OUR word that we FOUGHT for. Why do you want to hand it back to the homophobes? We Reclaim stuff so they can't use it agasint us. Every word we reclaim thats one less insult they have agasint us.

It's the QUEER COMMUNITY. This is our community. We are here we are queer. We aren't handing the word back to the bigots just because you don't like it.

We fought to reclaim that word and we fought for our community. The QUEER community.

Queer people are unstoppable

The orthodox church promised me love and salvation, yet what I saw was judgement, oppression and hate. The Russian-speaking (pseudo-)Marxist organisations promised me education and solidarity. They fulfilled the education part (and then some), but instead of solidarity I saw impotence, toxicity and elitism. The queer community promised me nothing but acceptance. I got that, and love, and further education, and a stronger sense of solidarity than I ever hoped for. And as for salvation/change? The battle is far from over, and no matter how bleak things might seemingly get, I don't believe anything or anyone can truly defeat us. We didn't choose to be lesbian, bi, pan, gay, trans, etc. We didn't choose our identity, or our genders, we're only choosing the way we express them (what a terrible transgression, right). Being queer is part of nature. And that makes us, put together, a force of nature. We might stagger, we might suffer, but as long as we're together, and stand by each other, we can never be defeated!

and people wonder why nobody knows about us

Me at pride yesterday 🏳️‍🌈

First off, pride is not about being gay or trans or whatever. I mean it is, but at its core what it is actually about is being something that society hates and shames and would rather go away or be actively destroyed and taking pride in your existence. Hence why it is "pride". It is a protest against the very idea of in groups and out groups in society.

And the protests that gradually morphed into our current pride celebrations were never just about being gay or trans. They were also very much about sexual lifestyles that our society views as transgressive. So sex workers, the kink community, etc. Originally everything associated with pride was considered not family friendly. If we make pride family friendly by removing transgressive sexual elements what we are doing is kicking out and abandoning the groups that supported gay and trans people from the beginning now that we got ours. And make no mistake, a huge amount of the no kink at pride push is coming directly from gays that hate these groups as much as mainstream society does.

Sanitizing pride removes the point completely. At that point why are we even doing this. It's useless.

The second thing is that no one is having kinky sex in public at pride. It isn't a sex party. At literal worst you might see someone in leathers and a puppy dog mask on a leash. I've seen people say they don't want kink at pride, but they are not going to kick out leather daddies and such but that is exactly what the people really pushing "no kink at pride" are trying to do. It never gets worse than people wearing kinky costumes and engaging in the most mild of kinky activities. And I am going to be bold here, people thinking a young teenager seeing a leather puppy on a leash is a problem is nuts.

Sexual education in our society is in an abysmally poor state because we, as a society, hate and fear sex to an irrational degree. But sex is not inherently traumatizing. If we were not taught to hate and fear sex then the idea of kink at pride being a problem would seem like nonsense. Seeing a leather puppy at pride isn't going to hurt anyone unless they have been so conditioned to hate and fear sex that they have an irrational reaction towards it. And in that case it isn't seeing kink that traumatized them, it is the years of conditioning to hate and fear sex.

What seeing kink at pride might do is let a person know that alternative sexual lifestyles exist. And that, more than anything, is why people hate kink at pride. Because our society hates alternative sexual lifestyles, and many people (including gay people) would rather a person die than embrace kink or get into polyamory.

I wont go on full a rant about sexual education, but I think kids should know the basics of sex as early as possible and especially should be educated on the basics of kink and subversive sexual fantasy by early teenage years because the prevalence of rape fantasies and other subversive sexual fantasy exists at a really high rate, and dealing with the shame of thinking your sexuality is violent and tainted is extremely damaging to young teenagers. No matter if we like it or not these kids are sexual individuals. That ship sets sail the first time a kid has a sexual fantasy, which often is in the preteen years but can happen even before that. And some of them are kinky from the very beginning, and let me tell you from personal experience it is terrifying not understanding why your mind keeps on bringing up fantasies like that.

The only sensible thing to do is arm kids with the knowledge and tools to deal with their sexuality, whatever form that might take. The fact we don't is a failure of puritan prejudice that all of us have been conditioned to see as normal. If a kid has the bare minimum of proper sexual education then they wont even blink an eye at a leather puppy at pride. And if they don't, it is better that they are exposed to the idea of alternative lifestyles and sexually subversive fantasies (in this very mild and safe way) as early as possible because they might need to know.

Since it's Pride Month, I just gotta say this: Being queer in and of itself is an act of non conformity.

Queerphobic cishets don't want queer people to exist, precisely because we don't conform to their perception of what this world should look like.

By expecting fellow queers to conform to an imaginary standard and fit into a neat little box so we can all be the same, you're basically copying what our oppressors have been doing to us since the beginning by the book.

We're queer because we're diverse. We're beautiful because we're different. It's why we're the rainbow.

Yesterday at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade I was walking with a group of queer Brooklyn families, and the kids came up with a chant for us to do, it went: We're here We're queer We're sharks we're gonna eat you And that's why protest chants will be written exclusively by people under ten from now on.

Queer as Folk for all folk

This show was my teenagehood and is, to this day, legitimately my favorite tv show. The only show I have rewatched, and rewatched more than once.

If you have never seen it, go watch it. It holds a lot of queer history, struggles, and is UNAPOLOGETICALLY QUEER. It has explicit gay sex, it has drugs, it has discovery, it has closeting, age gaps, sex ed - the gay kind, the fight for queer rights, losing queer rights, homophobia and more. It does not subscribe to the heteronormativity of only portraying queers in media a certain way. It showcases queerness.

"Despite what the gay press said in 2005, we really do still need exclusive queer spaces too. Places where we don’t need to feel like we need to put on a mask for the cisgender heteros who judge us for being the right kind of queer or not. Who watch our every move to decide whether or not we deserve rights. Those spaces are still required, and that includes media spaces. We DO, in fact, need shows and movies just about us. Because we need to see ourselves outside the cis-het norm we might feel forced to adhere to. We need to see ourselves when we’re with other people like us. And I think with the new Queer as Folk, and the new movie Bros coming out this fall, major queer media producers might finally be realizing this. They might as well make more shows and movies just about us because it’s not like we’re going anywhere. The thumpa-thumpa continues. It always will, no matter what happens, no matter who's president, no matter who hates us, no matter what idiot politicians say, no matter what asshole comedians say. Because as Our Lady of Disco, the divine Miss Gloria Gaynor, has always sung to us, "We will survive."
