Attention: There may be a new scam thing (might also not be new)
Okay so I just got a weird notification from drive telling me I got shared a folder. The name of the folder was suspicious as fuck and thank my gods it was but my guess is that if this is a scam it might not always be the case!
Mine was from someone I'd never heard of and I definitely have not recently asked anyone to share any Google Drive folders or documents or anything with me.
Still, had the folder been titled something more innocent or innocuous, I might have been more inclined to click it or look into it.
So, just a PSA/WARNING to be on the look out for something like this. If you get something unsolicited no matter if it's a folder or a Google doc or anything! If you did not ask someone to share something on Google drive with you, DO NOT OPEN IT.
Instead click the three dots on the folder/document/whatever that are to the right of the item. Find report or block. Make sure you click the first option (I think it's called "spam" or something like that as it includes anything from unsolicited things, to malware, viruses, and phishing attempts.
My guess is that this scam most assuredly falls into one of the last three categories and sometimes just opening the thing can cause the bad thing to take place (i.e. you get the virus or malware or it immediately directs you to the phishing scam). Point is, it doesn't matter. Don't tempt the fates. Just get rid of it and don't look back. Doing what I instructed above will clear it from your drive without you having to take any further steps and insures they won't try to send anything further, at just via that particular account. It's my hope that it also blocks IP addresses and not just the account but that's not a guarantee so stay vigilant as they may try multiple times. So just remember, if you're not expecting something, block and report immediately.
PLEASE REBLOG AND SHARE TO GET THE WORD OUT.

SCAM ALERT: Cryptocurrency related but can affect trans people buying HRT. I was probably 10 seconds away from having money stolen and I know what I'm doing. (Crypto Clipper)
Today I was helping a trans friend order some DIY HRT. A lot of DIY HRT places only accept cryptocurrency for security reasons. I am not looking to promote cryptocurrency or anything associated with it, but if you may be forced to use it for HRT or other reasons, you need to know this.
In general if you are forced to use crypto, you should use the cheapest coin your supplier will accept. If it is cheap, that means there is not a lot of activity on the chain and energy use will be less. I used one called Zcash as it was the cheapest one the site accepted but that's not really relevant.
I used an old coinbase account I had used for similar situations in the past. I was doing it on her PC. I got the instructions to pay on the HRT site, and I pasted the wallet address into Coinbase and just before I hit send I noticed the wallet address I had pasted didn't match the wallet address I had copied.
I looked it up and found this is from a form of malware called a Crypto Clipper, that detects when you have copied a crypto address, and makes you paste a different one so it can steal your money. I am lucky I noticed. To remedy it, I installed the free trial of Malwarebytes on her PC to remove malware, and completed the crypto transaction on my PC, and confirmed that the wallet address matched what the HRT site had given me.
I managed to avoid falling for it but it's such an easy thing to fall for, especially if you have avoided crypto thus far for extremely understandable reasons. Be careful out there! It could happen to anyone.

some un-gentle reminders going into year 4 of the ongoing covid pandemic:
- the CDC is no longer reporting case numbers. if things were bad again (which they are and have been), the CDC is not gonna be the one to sound the alarm.
- if you haven't gotten your 2023 covid shot, you're effectively not vaccinated against the current strains of covid. go get vaccinated ASAP.
- any mask is better than no mask, but kn95s and n95s are your best bet to protect yourself and others.
- you SHOULD be wearing a mask in public spaces. everyone should. covid is airborne and it spread wherever people are. that includes your school, your workplace, the grocery store, the hospital, any place where people gather.
- if you're sick with any cold/flu symptoms, get tested and isolate. even if you "just had a runny nose," that doesn't mean it won't kill someone else you've been in contact with.
- the government and the media will do everything they can to convince you that there's no pandemic anymore. that doesn't mean that covid isn't a real and active threat to everyone's health and well-being.
TLDR: mask up, get vaccinated, and remind others to do the same. don't stop talking about it. keep yourself and others safe.

5 Analog Horror Series to Keep You Up at Night
Analog horror is a growing horror subgenre, but what IS it exactly? And what is it that makes it so chilling to watch? Join me on this journey exploring five popular analog horror series and what makes them so effective.
What is Analog Horror? Analog horror is a rather niche (but quickly growing!) horror genre that utilizes 90s-esque technology and media to evoke a sense of fear, paranoia, and/or dread. Described as “cryptic” or “vague,” analog horror clips are often presented out of order, appearing normal and somewhat mundane at first and getting progressively more sinister over time. Existential dread is also…

Rabies PSA
Thank you to the lovely @streetlight-haver for inspiring me to make this post.
This is a little PSA on why people need to take their Rabies shots and also why Rabies needs to be a more informed about virus.
youtube
Please please please if you are ever bitten or scratched by an animal outside or by one you don't know, GO GET TESTED!
Even if the skin was not broken, you may still have been affected. While it might not be visible to the eye, there may be microtears instead.
Without proper treatment, Rabies is a death sentence. YOU ARE MORE LIKELY TO DIE THEN SURVIVE!
Usually, by the time you experience Rabies symptoms, you are too late.
Common Symptoms Include:
Hydrophobia
Restlessness
Discomfort
Fever
Headaches
Nausea
Aggressiveness
Trouble Swallowing
Foaming at the mouth
Don't wait for these symptoms to occur. Get help immediately if you believe to have been in contact with anything carrying Rabies!
*I am not a doctor or medical personnel. Do your own research and if anything I have said is wrong, please inform me*

mpox cases are far outpacing last year's numbers, CDC reports
We also wanted to give people time to protect themselves ahead of Pride season. We're hoping this might encourage people to go ahead and get vaccinated so they can go out and enjoy their celebrations… — Dr. Brandy Darby, director of the Division of Surveillance and Investigation in the Office of Epidemiology at the Virginia Department of Health

a note on talking about HIV/AIDS:
if someone "died from the HIV", they died from AIDS. they did not die from HIV and it is a misnomer to say so.
HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. if left untreated, HIV always eventually causes AIDS the same way untreated syphilis always eventually gets in your brain. AIDS is a specific set of conditions that mean your immune system is not functioning and is heavily affected by HIV.
i know, it's weird, right? a little bit like naming tertiary/late-stage syphilis an entirely other thing! but the naming convention for HIV/AIDS exists because we had AIDS (and before it GRID) as a diagnosis for quite a while before scientists discovered the virus that caused it. this was directly due to homophobia & hatred of drug users; if the virus had been given the attention it needed when it emerged we'd probably not have the HIV vs AIDS distinction.
but we do, and it's important, so please know that it exists and what each word means.
thank you!!

Rapid spread of avian flu a 'global concern': report Cheryl Santa Maria
Wednesday, April 27th 2022, 3:20 pm - “This serves as a strong reminder that avian influenza is spreading across the globe and that anyone with farm animals must practice good biosecurity habits."
Following recent outbreaks of H5N1 - or the avian flu - in Canada and the U.S., the virus is "rapidly becoming a global concern," according to a new report, published this week, by Science.
Manitoba is the latest Canadian province to confirm the presence of bird flu, with a case recently identified in commerical flock.
Alberta, Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Nova Scotia have also reported cases.
Outside of North America, outbreaks are being monitored in Asia, Africa, and Europe.
“The ongoing 2021-2022 wave of avian influenza H5N1 is unprecedented in its rapid spread and extremely high frequency of outbreaks in poultry and wild birds, and is a continuing potential threat to humans,” the authors of the Science report write.
The statement echoes that of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), which has also commented on the "unprecendented" speed of the virus.
"The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is currently responding to cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza in farmed birds across Canada,” reads a statement on the agency’s website.
“This serves as a strong reminder that avian influenza is spreading across the globe and that anyone with farm animals must practice good biosecurity habits."
Migratory birds are responsible for some of the outbreaks, and experts believe cases will rise as birds return to Canada for the summer.
Bird flu can be fatal for some domesticated birds, including chickens, ducks, and turkeys. It is possible to transmit H5N1 to humans, but cases are rare. To date, there are two known human cases of avian flu, both occurring in 2018.
The current outbreak is not a risk to healthy people who are not in contact with infected birds.
PRECAUTIONS
People with backyard chickens are advised to pay attention to signs of excessive thirst and decreased appetite in their flocks.
Members of the public should avoid feeding wild birds by hand. Bird feeders should be regularly cleaned and maintained.

I just wanted to put an alert out there about some ads I have been seeing while playing mobile games. These are ADVERTISEMENTS. Do NOT mistake them for real warnings. I don’t know for sure what would happen if you were to download the VPN they are advertising but I do know that this is a common tactic used by scammers and phishers and the like. Here are screenshots:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Image description: first image is a screenshot of an advertisement disguised as a warning from Apple Security, with text stating that the user’s iPhone is infected with three viruses, and that the battery of the device has been infected and damaged. It further says that if the user doesn’t remove the malware now, it may cause more damage to the phone, and that the way to remove the malware is to press a button below and install the recommended virus protection from the AppStore. Note the lack of space between “App” and “Store”. Second image adds a false System Notification along with the logo for the VPN being advertised, as well as a download button.)
While this is shown, the text is usually read aloud by a robotic-sounding voice that resembles Siri. It is clearly made to trick people into believing that their phone has been damaged by viruses.
Just to be clear, your phone’s battery CANNOT be damaged by viruses. The battery is a PHYSICAL item inside your phone, and there is NO SUCH THING as a virus that can damage the battery. The battery is the power supply for your phone. Viruses and other malware cannot do anything to your battery.
These ads are designed to scare you into installing an app, which purports to be a VPN with virus protection. This is an ADVERTISEMENT. This is NOT a security notification.

PSA- TAKE YOUR FLASHDRIVE OUT OF YOUR COMPUTER
If you are not using your flashdrive to actively back things up- TAKE IT OUT OF YOUR COMPUTER! DO IT NOW! RIGHT. NOW.
Yesterday one of my flashdrives stopped working. My mom took it to our local computer guy to find out what was wrong with it and the guy said the the ONLY way that it could POSSIBLY (not definitely, POSSIBLY) be recovered is by sending it to a FORENSICS COMPANY that charges NINE HUNDRED AND FIFTY DOLLARS ($950) as a flat rate for this service. IF the stuff can even be recovered.
The computer guy said that he has seen all types of flashdrives, no matter the quality, fail because people don't know that they need to take them out of their computers when they're not using them. A few of the things that can happen are the flashdrive can overheat or a virus could destroy it if your computer happens to pick up a virus.
I have thousands of pictures and videos on that flashdrive, precious, precious memories of kids I've worked with that I may never see again in my life and now I might have lost them because I didn't know to take my flashdrive out of my computer when I'm not using it. The cute pictures of my three new kittens I've been posting? On that flashdrive. Memories from holidays and birthdays and camping adventures might be lost forever.
TAKE. YOUR. FLASHDRIVE. OUT. OF. YOUR. COMPUTER!!!!!!
(please for the love of all that is good share this so other people don't have it happen too)
