Health Canada is recalling 68,000 garage heaters from Canadian Tire and other retailers because of concerns the product is overheating and in some cases, starting fires.
The national health agency issued a recall notice on Thursday, asking consumers to "immediately stop using" certain Mastercraft, Profusion Heat, Prestige and Matrix portable garage heaters.
The recalled heaters, sold in blue and red, have the Intertek file number 3153457, which can be found on the back of the unit.

As someone (from the USA) who survived a severe hurricane, if there is one piece of advice I could give, PLEASE listen to any evacuation orders. This goes for voluntary and mandatory, but ESPECIALLY mandatory. If you can't get outside the evacuation zone, even just getting closer to the boundary is better than nothing.
If you are in a mandatory evacuation zone and you stay, no one (no emergency services) will be coming to save you. You will have to hunker down for however long the storm lasts.
The time to prepare for evacuation is as soon as you know you're under evacuation order, at LEAST. Do NOT delay. You don't want to be like my family who only left once the flood began (thanks, dad). Not only did we have to hurry to pack, we weren't able to prepare. At that, here are some good things to do in a hurricane:
Have a radio - an emergency crank radio is good, since it uses mechanical energy. We also had walkie talkies.
Have a good first aid kit, especially if you cant get out.
Unplug anything that you absolutely do not need while home, unplug everything before you leave. We didn't do this and my house almost caught fire (fridge outlet) - only the flood put it out.
Have a working fire alarm, charge flashlights and devices. Make sure you also have candles and lighters, too.
Be VERY careful if you must wade or drive in flood water. There will be debris, there will be down power lines. It is deeper than it looks.
Stock up on water and nonperishable food. Eat your perishable foods now. Use coolers for any excess. MREs are good to have, you can order them online.
Put belongings you can't take with you as high up in your house as you can - prioritize things that cannot be easily/emotionally replaced. Leave space for you to go high up too, if you're staying.
Use sand bags (or DIY alternatives) as flood barriers. Tie or tarp down everything you can, and don't keep it in a wide open area.
Close windows, and stay away from them. You really don't want to be there when something comes flying.
This is all I can think of for now, others feel free to add more or correct me. Remember, your life is more important than objects. Losing your life is worse than losing everything but your life. Stay safe, and stay alive.

Nine designs of buttons are now up in my shop! They are $2 each or 3 for $5. Because of their size, the shipping prices will be the same as the posters - however, there is no additional cost to ship multiple, sets, or bundled with another item! In addition, I have three designs of 1.5" vinyl stickers, 1 for 1$ or all three for $2. All prices CAD.
Tumblr media
I will definitely add the other "small" designs to the small sticker selection once I make a few sales to cover the sticker cost, and a select few of the poster designs in "small" form once I figure out how to format them at those sizes. Thank you for your support!

Today I want to vent about lab safety.
I've been working in labs for 8 years so far, from sample reception to asbestos testing and eventually manager roles and I thought I'd list a few of the most notable health and safety incidents that have occurred both while I've been working and told to me by other people I've worked with.
Crocs are not appropriate for use in a laboratory setting, especially in areas that use aqua regia.
You should not take your shoes off in the lab to rest your feet on the workbench next to the GCMS.
Don't dry your socks in the bacterial incubator.
Please do not climb a pile of stacked cool boxes because you saw a rat.
H2SO4 (Sulfuric acid) should be handled with care, do not wipe your face with your gloves on after handling.
Please do not mix H2SO4 with water, cap the quickly heating mixture, then shake it next to your face.
Don't mix a cyanide compound with acid, it forms hydrogen cyanide which is volatile.
Do not attempt to pretend to cut yourself with a knife, you will cut yourself with a knife.
Don't put your pinkie finger in the cap crimper, it will crimp your finger.
Do not remove a piece of concrete from a fume cabinet to smash it on the floor with a hammer if that concrete is in the lab for asbestos testing.
No matter how cool your secret santa present is, don't fire a crossbow in the lab.
Make sure that TOC crucibles (at 550c) are held in the pincers firmly, or they will set fire to your lab coat when they bounce into your pocket.
Don't order pet cockroaches to the lab or sample reception will freak out.
Do not sit on the delivery trollies and race around the lab on them.
When servicing a fume cupboard, don't remove your safety glasses to get a better look when there are winchesters of acid kept inside.
Do not wear your lab coat in the canteen especially when you work with raw sewage.
I'm sure I'll think of more later, but this is a few of them.

Random Fact #6,516
The oldest worker strike we know of was at the building site of the pyramid for Ramses III.
What were they striking about? Poor wages.
The workers didn't just refuse to construct Rameses III’s future tomb either, they actually occupied the Valley of the Kings and were preventing anyone from entering to perform rituals or funerals.
Another strike from around the same time was about the lack of provision of sunscreen (so, basically, occupational safety).

An air-monitoring experiment found cancer-causing chemicals are polluting the entire city of Hamilton, Ont.
In the study, a concentration of benzo (a)pyrene — a carcinogenic chemical – in Hamilton exceeded the Ontario air quality guidelines.
“It’s about one cigarette per day that people are breathing in,” Matthew Adams, a University of Toronto associate professor and air-quality expert co-ordinating the study, said.

The federal government says it wants the RCMP to ban the use of two crowd-control tools that forces across the country say they have in their arsenals: sponge rounds and CS gas.
Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino’s office confirmed that it wants the measures outlawed, even as the RCMP declines to say whether or not it will comply with that instruction.
The decision to restrict even the use of “less lethal” alternatives to crowd-control tools such as rubber bullets and stronger forms of tear gas has some critics questioning whether the federal Liberals are playing politics with policing. [...]
The confirmation that the federal Liberals want the tools banned comes after The Canadian Press raised questions about a mandate letter Mendicino gave to RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki last year.
The letter directed the force to stop using three use-of-force methods: the “carotid control” neck hold, rubber bullets and tear gas.
The RCMP made headlines recently when it confirmed that it still allows officers to use the controversial neck hold despite those instructions and the fact that other police forces have stopped using it. [...]
The RCMP said in a statement that it is “working with partners, stakeholders and bargaining agents” to review the mandate letter _ and gave no indication that it intends to follow Mendicino’s orders. [...]

I sorta want to find out how many Health and Safety violations I can find in the upcoming Mario Movie. Like the Obvious ones are there but I also wanna watch it with a copy of the Health and Safety regulations and be all "yeah that's not fuckin' legal".
I mean look.

Hitting those bricks barehanded cannot be good.
Tumblr media
So the Mushroom kingdom has an understanding of PPE but they don't have handrails for lifts?
Tumblr media
Not only does the moving walkways not have handrails, but they don't even cross all the way and the transfer from one to another doesn't even give people time to cross and Mario has to leap across a chasm to transfer to the other one???
Tumblr media
"Ok so these bricks are just floating here?" Correct Mario, they are, they are also narrow, have no hand rails, are floating over a busy pedestrian street and have fuckin' gaps you can fall through or trip over!
Tumblr media
Mario suffers SEVERAL injuries just using these transportation pipes.
The Mushroom kingdom is truly where Health and Safety inspectors go when they die and are considered to sinful to enter Heaven.

Btw anyone who's told you that covid is nbd is LYING to you. Doc said I have a mild case. I am past the chills and body aches and writhing in agony.
Admittedly, my ears get more messed up probably than others when I'm congested, so the vertigo and ear pressure is probably not standard.
That aside, my ribs hurt to take a deep breath from all of this coughing. Taking a deep breath causes more coughing. Talking causes more coughing. Eating causes more coughing. My throat is raw from coughing and mouthbreathing because my nose is constantly congested. And my tongue is covered in painful sores. I cannot eat hard foods. I cannot eat spicy foods. I cannot eat acidic foods (no citrus, tomato products, etc) until these sores subside. Which may happen when the virus dies.
Again, I am an outlier on what I can and cannot eat on a regular basis, but this has significantly DWINDLED my options. Do you know how much canned soup doesn't have wheat or rice or some kind of red meat? Not a lot! And I'm used to homecooking my meals because of this but I am lightheaded and dizzy when standing, so cooking a whole meal from scratch rn is not only very difficult, but potentially dangerous.
I'm just. So angry at all the people who neglect to consider how this virus truly affects their community. At all of the people who refuse to wear a mask because they're not worried about getting sick - it's not for you! It's for me! It's for people who aren't even as healthy as me! As miserable as I am, this is a walk in the park compared to others.
The next time someone screams at me on the street or lays on their horn and gives me the finger for wearing a mask to protect myself and our whole community, I might just have to hunt them down and spoon their eyes out and replace them with big mean spiders.
Edit: I guess I should note that I am vaccinated! I have help fighting this and it's still kicking my butt!
