Day 2: Home
sometimes it's hard to think of the shadow of a castrum as "home", but... it's much harder to deny the effect the Shroud and its people have had on him.

I am a survivor of Florida, having gone to college there for 4.5 years. There's a lot (a LOT) to not like about Florida, but the wildlife is not one of those things. So for this Wet Beast Wednesday, I'm gonna talk about the most famous Florida resident, the manatee. And why stop there? I'll discuss all the sirenians in one go.
Tumblr media
(image: three manatees facing the camera. They are rotund, resembling a potato in shape. Their heads are smaller and end in squarish snouts. They have two flippers at the front of the head. The tail is flat, wide, and round. They are grey all over)
The sirenians are a taxonomic order of marine mammals consisting of 4 living members: three species of manatee and the dugong. They are the only herbivorous order of marine mammals, a trait that has given the the nickname "sea cows". The name Sirenia comes from the sirens of greek myth. In the original story, the sirens were bird with the heads and breasts of women, but later stories turned them into mermaids and that's the version that's stuck. There are unconfirmed stories that European sailors (the most common story uses Christopher Columbus) mistook manatees for mermaids, which is why they're named after sirens.
Tumblr media
(image: a manatee facing the camera. Its face is visible, revealing two nostrils on a broad, flat shout covered in whiskers. It's eyes are located above the snout and are small and black. It is grey, but has patches of greenish algae growing on it)
Sirenians all have a pretty similar body plan. They are fusiform (bulky in the middle and narrower at the ends) and very bulky animals not built for speed. They don't ned to be fast (though are capable of short bursts of speed) because unlike other marine mammals, they are herbivorous. The vast majority of a sirenian's diet consists of sea grass and most of the rest is other aquatic plants. All species have been known to supplement their diet with invertebrates, mostly during times of poor food availability. When feeding, they move their snouts through the sediment, letting sensory bristles detect plants. They then use their flexible and muscular lips to pull up the sea grass, roots and all. While an individual can eat up to 15% of their body weight a day, they are known to seek out seagrass patches with higher nitrogen content instead of eating everything they can get. This reliance on seagrass limits the range of sirenians to shallow coastal areas, rivers, and estuaries in warm climates. Hearing and touch (with the bristles that cover their bodies) are their main senses. Their eyes are weak, making them almost blind. Sirenians are large, with the largest ever known, Stellar's sea cow, growing up to 10 meters (33 ft) and 11 tons. Mature sirenians are large enough to have no natural predators. Like all marine mammals not named sea otters, sirenians have a thick layer of blubber to keep them warm. Their bones are extremely dense and likely act as ballast to counteract the buoyancy of the blubber. In the marine mammal breath-holding competition, sirenians do pretty bad. They can hold their breath for about 15 minutes at max.
Tumblr media
(image: a dugong. It is similar in appearance to a manatee, but skinnier. Its tail is a fluke with two points. Its head is larger and the snout and mouth point downwards)
Sirenian reproduction is somewhat poorly-understood. They only have a single calf at a time (with a gestation period of about a year) and mothers will raise them for one to two years. Calves mature quickly, reaching sexual maturity in around 2-5 years in manatees and 8 years in dugongs, though most females do not give birth until between 6 and 15 years. Their nipples are located behind the flippers, making a nursing calf appear to be sucking its mother's armpit. Sirenians are solitary animals who typically only congregate in groups when females are in estrus. Males are believed to compete for the right to mate and may engage in lekking. Lekking is when a male will claim a territory and mate with females in this territory while chasing opposing males out. Sirenians live long lives, with the oldest known individual being a female dugong that lived to 73. Despite how long they live, each female will only get pregnant a few times in her life.
Tumblr media
(image: a manatee mother with calf. The calf looks like a smaller version of the mother and is suckling, making it appear to be biting the mother's armpit)
As with all marine mammals, sirenians are descended from land mammals. The study of sirenian evolution has led to a surprising conclusion: the closest relatives of sirenians are elephants. It sounds weird, but there is substantial DNA evidence supporting this conclusion. In addition, the tusks of a dugong (see below) and flexible and prehensile lips of sirenians are based on the same structures as the tusks and trunks of elephants. It gets better, the next closest relative of both groups are the hyraxes, who look more like rodents than anything that should be related to an elephant or a manatee. All three are part of a clade called paenungulata, which is part of a clade called afrotheria. The other main group within afrotheria is afroinsectiphilia, which consists of aardvarks and various shrews. The afrotherian family reunions must be wild.
Tumblr media
(image: a scientific diagram showing a cladogram of afrotheria and the groups within it. source)
The dugong (Dugong dugon) is the last surviving member of its family, which also included the now extinct giant Stellar's sea cow. The easiest way to tell a dugong apart from a manatee is its tail, which is shaped like a dolphin's fluke instead of the round tails of manatees. Internally, there are also multiple differences, many of them relating to the skull. The skull has a very distinct shape, with the upper jaw bending down at a sharp angle. The tip of the upper jaw has two short tusks emerging from it. These tusks are found in moth males and females, but develop differently. In males, they emerge when the calf reaches sexual maturity, while those of females only emerge later in life and sometimes not at all. It is believed that these tusks are used by males to fight over females, as males are often found with scars matching the shape of the tusks. Dugong teeth as simpler than those of manatees, being simple pegs. While manatee teeth will be replaced continuously through life, dugongs only get one set and have to make it count. Dugongs reach an average length of 3 m (10 ft) and 420 kg (930 lbs). Dugongs have the largest range of any sirenian, stretching from east Africa to the Solomon islands east of Australia. This range is fragmented rather than continuous and dugongs are separated into multiple isolated populations. The largest population is believed to exist in northern Australia.

The west Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus) does not live in west India. It lives in North America. I dunno who named it, but you had one job. The species is divided into two subspecies: the Florida manatee (T. m. latriostris) found in the Gulf of Mexico and east coast of the United States, and the Antillean manatee (T. m. manatus) found in the Caribbean and down south to Brazil. The Antillean subspecies is much more poorly known compared to the Florida subspecies. The Florida manatee may be the most well-studied of all manatees due to the extensive conservation efforts regarding them since the 1970s. Like other manatees, the WI manatee has a round, paddle-like tail and fingernails on its flippers. Their diaphragms are divided into two hemidiaphragms, each of which contracts one lung. They have the northernmost territory of all manatees, which comes with some consequences. They are susceptible to stress and even death when exposed to water under 20 degrees C (68 F). They travel south during winter, usually to southern Florida, but conservationists still have to rehabilitate manatees harmed by cool water every year.
Tumblr media
(image: tourists in transparent kayaks observing a west Indian manatee swim below them)
The Amazonian manatee (Trichechus inunguis) is the only sirenian that lives entirely in freshwater, residing in the Amazon river basin. They move seasonally inhabiting flooded areas during the wet season and lakes during the dry season. They fast during the dry season, subsisting off of their fat stores. There are believed to be multiple relatively isolated populations of Amazonian manatee, but studying them is difficult due to them preferring to live in areas away from humans. The Amazonian manatee is the smallest sirenian, reaching between 160 and 230 cm (5 ft 4 in to 7 ft 7 in) and 120 to 270 kg (265 to 595 lbs). Scientist Marc van Roosmalen has proposed the existence of a related species, the dwarf manatee, that lives only in one tributary of Aripuanã river, which is in the habitat range of the Amazonian manatee. Their existence is debated, but most manatee scientists think that they are misidentified juvenile Amazonian manatees.
Tumblr media
(image: an Amazonian manatee with calf, seen from ahead and below. they have the same body plan as the above images, but are a darker grey with a white patch on the stomach)
The African manatee (Trichechus senegalensis) is the only species found in the old world, in west Africa from Senegal to Angola. They occupy the largest range of habitats of all sirenians, from tropical islands to flooded forests, to offshore sand flats, to lakes and rivers. They will swim up river during the wet season and back down during dry season. Some isolated populations live exclusively in rivers, never venturing out to sea. They are the most omnivorous of the sirenians, seeking out invertebrates to eat and stealing fish from nets. Many cultural groups in their range consider the African manatee sacred, some saying they used to be people and that killing one requires paying a penance. Mami Wata, a water spirit revered in throughout west, central, and south Africa, has been identified with manatees by some folklorists.
Tumblr media
(image: an African manatee seen from the side in an aquarium. It looks almost identical to the west Indian manatee)
All sirenians are classified as vulnerable by the IUCN, except for the Antillean manatee, which is endangered. As they have few to no predators as adults, the primary threats for all sirenians come from humans. Boat strikes and getting tangled in nets kills and injures many individuals, possibly more than die of natural causes. This is not helped by them lacking fear responses to predators, meaning they don't flee from humans and boats. All species were historically hunted for their meat, blubber, and bones, reducing their populations. While all species are now legally protected, poaching and legal hunting by indigenous groups still occurs. They are also threatened by habitat loss as coastal development, pollution, and climate change reduces the range of seagrass. Damming has also reduced their ability to travel up rivers, cutting off valuable feeding ground. Learning about freshwater ecology will make you despise dams. In the United States, the west Indian manatee has become an icon of conservation, especially in Florida, where they have extensive legal protections. Controversially, the US government reduced their legal protections in 2017, much to the ire of many conservation groups. The manatee is the state marine mammal of Florida, presumably narrowly beating out dolphins and meth heads wandering around the everglades.

People really liking my speculative animal wishlists and seem to enjoy that I keep doing vampire versions of non-vampire animals, which is of course because vampire bats are adorable and wonderful. They are adorable and wonderful BECAUSE they are vampires. They are technically completely harmless but there's still a chance they will drink your blood while you're asleep and we as a species hate that SO much it inspires horror and superstition of all sorts. So I think there should be more like that but I already have some that are fish and some that are bugs, so here's just my Top Ten Land Vertebrates That Should Have Vampire Versions:
Tarsier. How great would it be if that thing was also a creeping ghoul. Vampire version would be goth colors. I guess it'd be aesthetically like between a tarsier and an aye-aye actually.
Gecko. I don't know how it would obtain the blood, maybe its tongue would have evolved to have a super sharp tip? Maybe the tip of its little gecko nose would be like a sharp hook?
Tree frog. Same issue as the gecko. I'm gonna say the gecko has a sharp tongue and the frog has a sharp nose. A frog with a beak. Let's also make it see through like a glass frog. Just a ghostly little frog that will cut you.
Kiwi bird, using a needly-fine beak tip and excellent climbing skills, much tinier than the New Zealand one and found on every continent. Then the New Zealand kiwi can still be special. Nature specials can be ike "did you know!? The New Zealand Giant Kiwi is the only kiwi that isn't a sick freak"
Pangolin and this one unlike the rest of these would maybe actually be dangerous, like still pretty large for a blood feeder, if you fall asleep unprotected in vampangolin territory you aren't gonna wake up. I just think pangolins deserve to take a little something back, you know. I guess it might be hard for them to sustain themselves on just blood but maybe these would live where there's a whole lot of big juicy animals for them, like they follow herds of buffalo around.
Flying squirrel and I would put this in my own state of Oregon so like a real Fearsome Critter.
Turtle, because to successfully live like a vampire bat you need to be able to detect a blood source, get to it quickly, drink your fill and get out of there just as quickly, so we'd be talking the fastest and lightest little turtle in the world, a long legged scurrying beetle of a turtle, really long neck with a nasty ass beak. Shell could also be covered in wicked as hell thorns for when a rude host wakes up and tries to be mean to it.
Snake and I would also make it the shortest fattest snake so I guess I'm saying a leech tsuchinoko. Like the vampire bat its fangs would have evolved into two short but sharp little vampire buckteeth. It would be too chubby to coil up the way regular snakes do so instead it would have to roll up the way a pillbug or an armadillo does, into a ball.
Pachyderm with a sharp spur on its trunk. Maybe around pug size, a wrinkly hairy wretched looking micro elephant that would probably live off the blood of things like giraffes and zebras and regular elephants while they sleep. Actually like the pangolin this could probably kill you. Every now and then we could hear about how a big game hunter left his tent open and got completely exsanguinated by an adorable hideous vamphant.

A/N: Someone complimented my writing and that inflated my ego so it's time for more Bowser fics.
———————————————
You didn’t know how you managed to convince Bowser to allow you to tag along on one of his expeditions into what was pretty much enemy territory, nor how you managed to convince the mighty King of the Koopas to go on a walk with you through the forests south of the camp, but you wore a bright and proud smile as you wandered down the worn, muddy path.
You've been to the Mushroom Kingdom before in passing, representing the koopas in any political squabble the royals decided to partake in, but you never took the time to actually see or experience it. You heard plenty of gossip from the castle staff. They always described the beautiful nature of the land. The flora that grew thick in the forests. The streams of water that rushed faster than lava could ever hope to achieve. Not only that, but you managed to eavesdrop on some scouts' talk, whispering about an opening somewhere within the woods. It was a clearing you wanted to see with your own eyes.
And now, as you walked ahead of your lover, the landscape was greener and more lush than you were used to.
Vivid grass sprouted from every corner, peaking between berry-clad bushes and tall, brown trees, fighting over the crust of the earth. Dots of red and blue and green mushrooms were scattered across the distance of the forest. Some formed tiny visible circles, no doubt highlighting the spread of mycelium below. In some places the mushrooms grew larger, competing with the size of the trees. Those reminded you of the decorated plazas of Toad Town, where the citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom showed off the largest growths like trophies.
You also wanted to argue that it was warmer than in the area surrounding the Dark Lands. Sunlight was bright on your skin as it filtered through the leafy canopy, heat seeping through the fabric of your royal clothes like the warmth of hot sand. It was smooth and felt like nothing less of a loving hug. It was a pleasant change to the lava's heat of the molten land you were used to, and it was different to the flicker of firelight that lit the pylons leading up to Bowser's Castle. The wind was fresh, not humid at all, and the air was breathable and ash-free.
You'd say that the moment rivalled the safety of the gold-lined walls of his kingdom.
Humming to yourself, your attention turned back to Bowser when you heard him release a low grunt. You had to cover your face to hold back your chuckle.
He was swatting his large paws at two bright blue butterflies. They dodged him with ease, though each swipe of his claws caused them to be pushed into disarray. They tumbled in the air, flapping their tiny wings wildly, before they returned to their assault. When one butterfly was pushed away, the other took its place in the fight. Whenever that one was hit, the previous came back, all the while Bowser grunted and growled in annoyance. It was almost like they were teasing the large koopa who was struggling against them and, against your better judgement, you let out a snort.
Unfortunately, you didn’t get to bask in the moment for too long as the ground below your feet turned into a pillow of soft mush, causing your leg to roll and shoot a sharp pain through you and causing you to lose your balance.
In the moment that followed, you saw Bowser’s boiled gaze soften as it turned to you then widen with horror. His body bounded towards you, a sudden disregard to the butterflies, however his paws didn't quite reach you.
You tumbled down the mossy growth, rolling and falling and bouncing off the soft hill. Your eyes were tightly closed shut, your hands around your head until you let out a final oof. Your body's motion came to a stop right in the middle of rustling blooms.
You were dizzy as you unravelled yourself, a dull ache all around your body. You could taste grass on your tongue. You could feel the dirt and moss push against the palm of your hand. You could smell a variety of scents, but for a moment the most prominent one was mud.
Breathing in and slowly breathing out, shaking yourself out of your spinning head, you opened your eyes and looked around. A smile grew on your face.
You were surrounded by flowers. Hundreds of them at least.
It was the clearing.
They were growing in the pocket of light that you were lying in, white and yellow petals with golden centres staring you down as if they themselves came alive in the moment. They swayed gently in the warm breeze, performing their little enticing dance that called forth multiple insects. Bees were humming their sweet melodies and promises of honey, orange and pink butterflies were hovering like colourful fairies. None dared to entertain you.
Sitting there, your clothes spoiled with patches of green pigments, you were surprised that you didn’t sneeze. Your body wasn't used to the flora after living so long in the Dark Lands, and yet you felt not even a smidge of irritation. You didn’t want to sneeze. You didn't want to cough. Maybe it was a coincidence, or maybe it was the truth the rays of light revealed as they filtered through the large gaps in the canopy. There was little to no pollen in the air. There was no dust and no seeds. The air was completely clear.
Knocked out of your thoughts, you felt the ground shake beneath you and heard Bowser roar your name. He thudded next to you, crunching the flowers under his body, large hands cupping your significantly smaller head with such delicate tenderness that even you thought you'd break at his touch.
"Are ya hurt?" He said, a growl masked through his concern, "tell me where it hurts."
You let him squish your face for a little while, nodding in his hands every time he growled and huffed in worry. His red eyes never left your body as he scanned over you. From your face to your arms to your chest to your legs. He checked you at least three times, and after he was done, he sat back with a loud thump, his hands dropping to the sides, grumbling under his breath.
A grumbling that stopped when you blindly picked a flower, leaned up as best as you could and put it between his horn and his flame-like hair.
"White suits you," you complimented, toying with a stray strand of red that fell from the rest of the heap.
You looked into his eyes only for him to huff in return, moving his head to look away.
Your smile widened.
There was a moment of comfortable silence that passed between the two of you as you sat amongst the blooms, your hand caressing the side of his snout. You heard the buzz of pollinators, seeing a few fly close with curiosity from the corner of your eye. You could hear the birds squawk melodiously in the trees above you. A tweet here and a tweet there in tune with the rustling leaves.
Most importantly, you could hear Bowser breathing.
In and out.
In and out.
Only to pause when you leaned into his chest, your hand dropping to your lap. Now you could also hear his heart hammer in his chest. You could feel it strum and you could feel him swallow as he wrapped his large arms around you, mindful of the rough scales and the metal bracelets around his wrists. You sat like that for a moment longer.
"I'll be honest," you started, looking up at him from the safety he provided, cupping his snout in your hands again as your back rested against his chest, "I rolled my ankle when I fell. You'll have to carry me back."
You smiled, your brows furrowing before relaxing when you heard him muster a laugh. It was like a roar, though you felt the strain behind it. He didn’t want to be too loud with how close you were to him.
"How 'bout we continue with our walk?"
You felt his snout morph with his grin, Bowser being as emotived as ever. His arms moved, twitching with light anticipation, and you leaned to the side to place a soft kiss on his bicep. "Only if it's no trouble."
"If it's my consort then it's ne'er any trouble."
His arms moved then, effortlessly lifting you from the ground as he stood up. Patting himself off the flowers that stuck to his scales, he adjusted you in his grip. Carefully, he made sure you were comfortable and secure in the crook of his large arm, nuzzling into you before he trooped forward with a wide grin.
The butterflies from before had returned, fluttering around the two of you.

Writing I did for my boatem vampires au!
I love seeing all your thoughts, theories, questions, and comments on this au! Feel free to shoot me an ask whenever! Don't be shy, I love talking to you all!
There was an intruder in their territory.
The thought of a trespasser in his forest made Impulse seethe with rage. Especially when Gem had mentioned the traces of magic she'd sensed from the place the stranger had crossed into his territory from hers. Any and all supernatural beings should've been well aware of the territory markings, meaning whoever was in the forest was either desperate or a threat.
Scar was right beside Impulse as they ran through the forest, Mumbo and Grian not far behind. The moon, partially covered by clouds, shone down through the trees as the vampires ran, providing them unneeded but welcome light. Combing the area near where Gem had reported the intruder, it wasn't long before the scent of magic and blood caught Impulse's attention and drew the group of vampires to a tree that most certainly hadn't been there a few days prior.
The vampires fanned out into a semi circle around the tree, an air of somberness having descended on them. “That's a nature spirit's tree, isn't it?” Mumbo pointed out, reaching out and lightly placing his hand against the bark. “I wonder what happened.”
Impulse frowned, approaching the tree as Grian decided to climb up into the branches. “They– Grian, that's disrespectful, get down– they must have taken pretty bad damage if they decided to shift. I doubt they were a threat, then, but why…?”
“Why indeed.” Grian finally spoke up as he began to descend from the tree carefully. “Could it have had anything to do with this?” His feet hit the ground, and he held out the small bundle in his arms.
Scar peered over, audibly gasping and stumbling back. “Oh, baby!” he exclaimed, eyes like saucers.
Impulse and Mumbo gave him confused glances, before looking at what Grian was holding. And it was just like Scar had said– oh, baby. Impulse froze, brown eyes locked with large silver ones. For a moment, he remembered hazel eyes and tiny hands and a cheerful voice calling his name. He shook the images away before the memories could be tainted by the sound of their screams, focusing on the present. “That… is a baby,” he agreed. “A very tiny, very human baby. Why was a dying nature spirit carrying a human baby?”
“Kidnapping?” Mumbo suggested, looking between the others, “no, that's a fae thing, isn't it?”
“People other than the fae can kidnap kids,” Scar pointed out, giving Grian a concerned look. “Are you supposed to hold babies like that?”
Impulse shook his head, automatically reaching for the infant. “Give her to me.” He took the baby into his arms and cradled her, making sure to support her head. Instinctively, he began to rock side to side on his feet.
“I'm surprised she isn't screaming,” Grian piped up, “aren't babies supposed to scream?”
“Let's hope she doesn't,” Impulse muttered, continuing to rock her.
There was silence for a moment.
“We're adopting her!” Scar exclaimed at the same time Grian went “Impulse, don't tell me you want to keep her.” The two shared looks before starting to laugh.
“But seriously,” Grian continued through soft laughter, “are we taking her in? I know that look,” he added before Impulse could interrupt, “and honestly, I'm all for it if the rest of us are. But how…?”
“We just tell her we found her one day?” Mumbo suggested, “and decided to adopt her?”
“I'm worried about the fact she's human,” Scar pointed out, “do we raise her like a vampire? Obviously we can't just feed her blood.”
Impulse shrugged. “We'll have to get used to human food, then. It's not like we can't eat it– we'll just have to have a supply of blood somewhere she can't get into.”
“Guys,” Mumbo interjected, but was ignored.
“We have the extra room– but she should stay with us, shouldn't she? Babies should stay with their parents in tiny cribs?” Scar asked, Impulse nodding.
“Do we feed her formula? Or do we have to, y'know… I don't think any of us could breastfeed– no, Scar, put your clothes back on!” Grian smacked Scar's hand before continuing. “Babies drink milk, right? We could steal a cow from Tim!” he suggested.
“Guys–” Mumbo tried again, but was interrupted.
“We are not stealing a cow from the ranchers,” Impulse shot Grian down. “We'll just have to buy baby formula, I suppose– or ask Gem? She takes care of baby animals. Maybe we could figure something out with her?”
“Gentlemen, please!” Mumbo yelled, finally getting everyone's attention. “This is all well and good, but there's something really big we're missing.” He looked around at the others. “What's her name?”
“Can't we just call her Baby?” Scar asked, “I think that's a lovely name.”
Impulse chuckled. “Actually, I had something in mind. How about… Pearl?”
The other vampires shared a look, before various affirmations were given.
Scar grinned. “I like the name Pearl. I could give her so many nicknames! Pearlie. Pearlo. Pearlie pop. Pearlie whirly–”
Grian smacked him over the back of his head. “Stop it, Scar! You're going to confuse the poor girl, and she doesn't even know how to speak yet!”
Mumbo giggled. “Pearl, then. And you all are sure we can handle raising a whole child? She's a whole human being, you know.”
Impulse hesitated, looking up. “...yeah. Yeah, I think we'll be able to handle it. If we need help, we'll have Gem and the ranchers. They're pretty good with kids, right?”
Grian made a face. “Tim's okay, but I'm pretty sure Tango would start focusing super hard on his projects and forget about a baby. Gem, I'm not sure. On our end, well– we have the financial ability and space to support her. We're pretty mature– don't look at me like that, Impulse– so, yeah. I think we could raise a child.”
“We'd raise her better than the wilds would,” Scar pointed out. “She'd die out here. Or worse.”
Impulse pressed his mouth into a thin line. “...yeah, no. Not in my territory. We're taking her in,” he decided, glancing down to see inquisitive silver eyes staring up at him. “Hi, Pearl,” he cooed, smiling softly.
Mumbo glanced toward the sky. “We should probably get her home. The moon's starting to set, and I don't think we should be running at full speed with a human baby.”
“Good idea,” Impulse agreed, “we'll walk back, then.”
“I still think we should steal a cow,” Grian said during the walk back, “I think it would be fun.”
Impulse snorted, rolling his eyes. “Yeah. If you wanna get burnt to a crisp while trying to steal from a fire spirit, be my guest, Grizzly bear.”
Grian blinked. “I'm sorry, what did you just call me?”
Mumbo chuckled lightly. “I can kinda see it. His hair's a fluffy mess, just like grizzly bear fur. Good one, Impulse!”
Grian turned on Mumbo, eyes wide and indignant. “I do not look like a grizzly bear!”
Pearl, still cradled in Impulse's arms, let out a soft babble followed by a giggle. Impulse grinned down at her, gently tickling under her chin. “I think that means she agrees, Grian.”
Grian groaned, shaking his head. “Well, I can't argue with a baby!”
Scar beamed. “Indeed you can't. Too bad, G-man!”
Finally they arrived back home, and were quick to pull together a sleeping area for Pearl. They'd all sleep in the same room tonight, Impulse decided, and the others were fine with that.
“As long as Scar keeps his clothes on–!” Grian had squawked, earning laughter from the rest of the group.
Scar placed a hand over his heart, casting a solemn gaze over the group. “I, Scar, promise to keep my clothes on during the sleepover.”
“He didn't,” Grian would later explain to Pearl, “we woke up and his shirt was halfway across the room.”
“It was not!” Scar would argue as Pearl giggled, his hands gently braiding her hair. “He's lying, Pearl! Lies and slander, I tell you!”
The next day, Impulse took care of Pearl while the others ran to the nearest town and grabbed whatever items they needed to properly care for the baby. Things wouldn't be perfect, but they would try.
“And that's why Griba told me babies grow on trees?”
“Yeahhh. Not sure what he was trying to accomplish with that one. Maybe he just panicked or something.”
“...thank you for telling me the story, Impy. Or should I call you Dad?”
“Ha. Whatever you want, moonshine.”
Thanks to @evenmoreevil for that breastfeeding line. Btw. It's his fault.

Does anybody wanna read the 6 pages of Eon's backstory I've written down? No? Yeah you do, here goes.
No one is gonna come after me for inaccurate Fractal lore. You're not gonna say anything about inaccurate Fractal lore.
-
Eon is an Ash Legion charr who never knew their parents and started out as a pretty basic thief. Their specialty was smoke and invisibility, disorienting and blinding enemies and sneaking in for the kill. As they grew up, their magic abilities grew and it became obvious from other charr that they have some relation to a Flame Legion smoke shaman, starting with their talent for smoke and thief magic and showing in the horns growing from their shoulders. It never really bothered them, they always thought the horns on their shoulders were kind of cool, and while knowing that how they looked would probably prevent them from climbing ranks, they were content taking orders.
In the early years, they were the picture-perfect soldier, not questioning anything and following orders perfectly. Their warband, the Shear warband, consisted of Maverick, Dinky, Clawspur, Euryale, Reeva, and Howl, their Legionnaire. The seven of them were tight-knit like any warband, and each would defend the others with their lives. They were a good warband, and right out of the fahrar they proved their worth in a seek and kill mission in Fireheart Rise, deep in Flame Legion territory. They were a trusted ‘band, often getting orders straight from Malice, instead of a Tribune. Within a few years of being out of the fahrar, they were one of the top warbands of the Ash Legion, and Howl had been promoted to Centurion. Put simply, the Shear warband is to Malice, what Ryland’s Steel warband is to Bangar.
Eon had a good relationship with each member of their warband, they were family after all, but their most trusted friend was Maverick, who they would spend a lot of time sparring and joking around with, they both had terrific egos and always thought the other was the worse fighter/sidekick. Maverick, Eon, Reeva, Dinky and Howl would spend a lot of time sparring together during downtime. Clawspur and Eon were both thieves, and they would both train each other by sneaking up on the other, as well as sitting together in silence. They were the two who would sneak the warband into places, taking turns throwing invisibility spells and smoke. Eon would also use their stealth to sneak up on and bother Euryale, teasing her and getting her temper flaring, it was good practice to dodge an elementalist. Joking and butting heads (literally) with Reeva was another pastime of theirs.
Sometime between 1320 and 1325, the Shear warband was given new orders to investigate an intriguing new discovery that Ash Legion spies had heard about, the Fractals of the Mists. It was currently an ongoing investigation and the Ash Legion was curious to see how it could benefit the Legions, whether this discovery could be a new training ground or something similar. The operation had been planned months in advance, and the goal was to be the defense team for a group of asura researchers venturing into the Fractals and uncover what their potential is. It was a pretty standard set-up, a protection mission that doubled as espionage, and their cover was a Blood Legion warband. Once they reached the research team in Lion’s Arch, Howl did all of the talking and the operation had a smooth start. It was only once the team had entered through an unstable portal in Fort Mariner that it went to shit.
The group consisted of ten asura, a small golem with equipment, and the warband of seven charr. It was a pretty large group, but the warband was confident and trusted in their Imperator’s intel. The intel turned out to be slightly flawed, as they were under the impression that there had been multiple excursions already into the Fractals and there was a base currently set up. This was not the case, it turned out that there had only been one or two krewes sent in and neither had made it back out. The base as well was still in the early stages of development, meaning they didn’t even have a stable means to get to it and hadn’t begun construction. This was all revealed during the first Fractal they stumbled into.
Howl led the team through the entrance portal and immediately into a firefight. He was killed before anyone knew what was happening. It was a dark cavern swarming with Destroyers, a Fractal of an Asuran underground city being overrun. Ignoring their fallen Legionnaire, the warband fought off the Destroyers and retreated into a tunnel, away from the main cavern and away from the remnants of the lost asura city. Two of the researchers were killed during the fight, and with the warband at six members, their group was down to fourteen and a golem.
Out of the fighting for the moment, the asura revealed a bit more detail on the Fractals. From the data collected from previous krewes (posthumously), it was believed that to leave a Fractal, you had to “stabilize” it, playing out what was happening by continuing a fight, ending it, or resolving whatever the Fractal was doing. The original plan was to go into a Fractal and leave it by this method while taking as many readings as possible using the equipment brought by the researchers stored in the golem. Technically still the plan, but with less people. Had to see the bigger picture.
With no time to mourn, the warband unanimously gave leadership to Maverick, and his first command was to follow the directions of the asura krewe, complete the Fractal, and get the hell out.
The rest of the Fractal went fine, now that they knew what was going on, but the completion of it did not let them out. Transported to another time, another place, the group felt any hope they held of leaving die with the comrades they left in the Asuran city.
The only way was forward. None of them knew how long it had been, no one knew if it was over months, days, or even years that they were trapped there. Sometimes the Fractals would be fought easily, they would finish one and be sent straight into another, and sometimes they wouldn’t be sent to another. Occasionally they would be trapped in one Fractal for days. With every completion, it would restart. There were bad ones. Losses.
Reeva was the next of the warband to die. As they were retreating away from a swarm of Grawl, shielded by Dinky’s guardian magic, Reeva sacrificed herself to distract them. She was never seen again, and Euryale was never the same.
In a particularly bad Fractal, one that pushed the warband to their limits, they lost more than half of the remaining asura, the golem, as well as Clawspur, Euryale, and Dinky. The enemy was a creature from the depths of the Jade Sea, something none of them had ever even heard of before, and its attacks went right through Dinky’s shield as he tried desperately to protect his comrades. Only Maverick and Eon remained after that, and they both did their best to keep each other afloat while mourning their brothers and sisters, and protect their charges.
It was like that for weeks. Maverick and Eon leading the asura team through Fractal after Fractal, hoping they would somehow be sent back home through one of them. Neither of them slept much during this time, and food was scarce, they scavenged whatever they could find in the Fractals and packed bags with any food they could carry. Sometimes they’d be in a Fractal with plenty of resources, and they would make the decision to stay for a while, until they were attacked again and had to fight their way through it.
During this time, Eon’s abilities were evolving. Possibly due to their exposure to the unstable magics around them, but it wasn’t affecting Maverick as much, despite him improving his fighting style as well. Eon began to use mesmer-like magical abilities. Their invisibility was more stable, and as they improved, they began to slightly manipulate time and space. Weaving portals and teleporting, invisibility and summoning weapons, being in this environment was giving them a boost to a magic they’d been born with. It made traversing the Fractals that much easier. Maverick’s new fighting as well, through a bit of training in a Fractal in Elona, he had discovered abilities to counteract magical attacks. They became a good team and they didn’t lose anyone for a long time because of it.
In a Fractal fighting against humans in Ascalon, Eon was splashed across the face with hot oil, Maverick dragged them away screaming while two of the asura watched their backs. One of them didn’t make it, but the other helped wrap the wound and with Eon blindfolded, the four fought through the Fractal to its completion. For days after that, Eon would be virtually blind, using their sense of smell and touch as well as various illusions and tips from Maverick and the asura. As they healed it became clear that the scar was starting to look like a rift of space. Once it was fully healed, it was much clearer. It worried all of them. There was no way of knowing what was happening to them, but it was obvious the constant exposure to the chaos of the Fractals was affecting them. They’d run across beings within the Fractals that were made entirely of space and all of them secretly wondered if that would eventually be them too.
It was maybe another month, no one really knows, time is strange in the Fractals and they have no real frame of reference, before everything went to shit again.
Maverick was killed, and with him, the remaining asura. There was a demon. That was all Eon knew. They killed it. The Fractal stabilized. Eon picked up their brother’s broken sword as the world changed again and continued alone.
It’s unknown how long they were alone. They stopped keeping track.
Fractal after Fractal they fought, determined to reach the end of it. To reach home eventually.
They were tired. Their family was dead. Everything they’d ever known was gone. They were trapped and they could never go home. They laid down in a dry cave, holding their brother’s sword close, and they went to sleep.
“He-hello? Are you there?”
Eon’s eyes shot open.
“You’re... an anomaly? You’re not supposed to be in this Fractal. I’ve been studying it for weeks.”
They sat up fully, clutching the sword close, “yes.” Their voice was hoarse and scratchy from lack of use.
“I think I can pull you out. Stand by.”
They felt the familiar feeling of going through a portal, and suddenly they were met with a dark sky full of stars, a rock formation floating in the middle of space, asura lab equipment and golems. The voice they heard called out to them and they looked up to see an asura with large eyes and braided hair.
“How long were you in there?”
Eon wasn’t listening. They saw the pink of a portal shimmering behind her at the edge of the rocky cliffside. They stepped over the asura, not even bothering looking in her direction, let alone answering her question, and they sprinted for the portal. They were faster than the golem that began to chase, and they felt vertigo for a moment as they went through.
They knew they were out the moment their feet hit the cobblestone of Fort Mariner, the unfamiliar smell of Lion’s Arch with the salty breeze and the sound of the low waves lapping against stone, they knew they were out. They fell to the ground on their hands and knees, breathing heavily and shaking, choking on a sob as their vision blurred with tears.
The feeling of the Mists was gone.
They sat on the shore in Lion’s Arch for hours, sifting through their thoughts. Sifting through what happened. Everything was different now. They felt nothing but rage for the Legions. They felt guilty for being the sole survivor, but they ultimately blamed the Legions. They had to go back and tell them what happened. They didn’t even know how long they’d been gone. The team was supposed to be back in a matter of hours, or days at most. Eon doesn’t even know how long they were in there.
The journey to the Black Citadel was uneventful, but when they reached the Ash Tribune’s office in the Core, the air in the room was thick and silent. Eon knew they looked like hell, but as the sole remaining member of one of the top warbands, they knew they were recognized.
They gave their report to Tribunes Torga and Makk.
They were informed that a few weeks after the warband had departed, they came across more intel about the group they’d been sent with. They were an Inquest asura krewe, not part of the official Lion’s Arch or Consortium team studying how to utilize Fractals. The Inquest were attempting their own way into them for study and experimentation, which is why it went downhill so quickly. They weren’t using the safe channels to go through them, they were cutting corners, and it cost Eon’s entire warband.
Eon left the Black Citadel after this. The Tribunes informed them that it had only been six months since they’d left, and that they would be expecting a full written report and they would be contacting Eon again to do missions for the Legion. They would not be doing that.
They went to the Durmand Priory, needing to be as far away from the Legions as they could be, and wanting to study what had happened to them in the Mists, what their new magic was and to hone their abilities further. The Priory was interested in their experiences and gave them membership. Eon remains a member to this day. (These events cause Eon to skip the levels 10-30 personal story missions and are immediately thrown into the 40+ story missions, leading to them becoming the Commander).

Ya know what SIKE i'm just gonna answer all of these bc I wanna write smth
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yuu Shi
1. I- I have so many. There is a whole playlist dedicated to her, but if I had to pick ONE in specific, it'd be Thank God I'm Not You.... and Aishite Aishite Aishite as a close second with the bonus that her voice claim sang a cover of it- and Siren as a third. Im indecisive.
2. Cater Diamond! They share a similar sense of humor, and they go back and forth pretty easily, somewhat similar to her and Ace. However, Yuu Shi actually enjoys interacting on social media, texting, and spamming with horrid jokes or memes. They share similar family issues as well.
3. Vil Schoenheit. She disagrees with him regarding a large majority of his principles he stands so firmly by, but she also relates to him greatly. She looks up to him and wants to rival him simultaneously. Whether she is successful in that regard enters spoiler territory.
4. Bugs, spiders, and snakes. Shit gets wild with Jamil.
5. Music is her best class :D She used to attend a performing art school, so she is very familiar with all the assignments and is usually called on as an example.
6. Art. She can't draw for shit. The long process of improving at it also makes her want to crawl into a hole. Not good at something immediately? Abandon it! Thats her unhealthy motto.
7. Pop Music Club. I feel this is rather self explanatory(#5). Plus she really needed an electric guitar to borrow since she lost her own. Music in general helps keep her sane at NRC.
8. Leona Kingscholar. She wants to kick his ass so bad. She DESPISES him. Mostly out of fear, but she would never admit it. The first interaction with him in the botanical gardens really scares her.
9. Of the canon staff members it would be Mozus Trein actually. She finds history to be a rather easy subject, and she really likes his cat. There's really not any other reasons. She isn't a big fan of authority figures (if she isn't one of them).
10. Octavinelle! Pomefiore is a close second, with beauty being of high importance to her, but she doesn't go to the same lengths to maintain it.
11. Hooo she would never admit it, but most likely Riddle. She just wants him to break out of whatever chains his mother shackled him in. Maybe it is because she is projecting, or maybe it is because she actually has a soft spot. Maybe both.
12. Bean day >:) No magic? Sign her the fuck up. Any more details and I'd go into spoiler territory.
13. Again, Leona Kingscholar. She would get her shit wrecked in a fair fight.
14. She places pretty high in her class once she gets the hang of how the world functions. She has similar grades to Azul or Jade.
15. She holds a lot of secrets away from the other characters. The most obvious one is her real name.
16. Shameless TCOAV chapter one plug LMAO
17. She finds them bothersome. She dislikes how jumpy they make her feel, and even when they are kind she is apprehensive around them. Yuu prefers to avoid them.
18. The magic, for sure. Not only just the magic itself, but how it affects the environment around her. It was a serious culture shock at first.
19. No.
20. Hm. :)c a tie between book two and three. Wink wonk.

HEY YALL! Today I’m gonna introduce two new AUs called Draketale and drakefell! Thank you so much @turtleskele for giving me the idea and characters!!
Now to start, yes this AU is about the dragons! In these two AUs, all monsters and humans mixed with dragons ages ago. Almost every person in this au is descended from the drakes at some point! They’re surface AUs meaning the monsters were were always living around humans and vice versa. The monster populations of both AUs are smaller but come with the largest chunk of mages that any au has seen!
The biggest thing this au adds is runes! To explain:
Runes are symbols of protection carved into an object, normally stone or gems, something that’ll last.
What runes can do is act as security. The simplest are just warnings and will alert the owners of the property of intruders. The best can make “domes” that are impossible to pass without clearance, and can even “turn off” any magic in their spaces.
Runes can only be used for protection. There’s been plenty of monsters and witches who’ve tried getting them to change but no one has been successful
Now the difference between the Draketale AUs and the drakefell AUs is what they focused on. The Draketale people inherited their dragons ancestors love for hoards. These people are very materialistic and adore the arts. Many of them have taken over the banks, schools and arts of ebott
The drakefell people inherited their ancestors warlike tendencies. They’re territorial people, enjoy combat and challenges, and take protecting their people very seriously. Many have joined the royal guard, mines or work with runes in some way.
It’s pretty easy to identify a human/mage/monster from Draketale and drakefell. Just look for:
Horns! The most common trait any of these people have are two-six horns on the top of the head. The sizes and shapes vary, but the vast majority (even the humans) have a pair
Slitted eyes. Another trait shared by most monsters and humans, small oval eye openings instead of the normal round ones is really common.
Scaling patterns on the skin. Some monsters and humans have small patches of scales. This is normally reserved for those who have more draconic blood than others
Wings, only those closely descended from the strongest have the large dragon wings of their ancestors.
Now meet the draketale and drakefell bros!!
Draketale:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alden/Al (Draketale sans):
He’s a draconic skeleton monster standing at 5’5 with bold aqua blue magic. He has smaller horns that curve backwards and smooth standard dragons wings. He is currently 45 years old
Al is a very intelligent monster with a tendency to daydream. He’s an artist at heart and very passionate, but tires easily non his projects making him flighty and unpredictable when it comes to plans and favors. He’s got a mischievous side and likes pulling little pranks on his friends.
He is a professor at ebotts university in the art department! He teaches the sculpting class. He’s also a freelance artist on the side. Al specializes in making figures and scenes out of stone, marble, crystal and metal.
As a draconic monster, Al has the ability to lay down runes. He is fairly decent at this and uses simple ones to protect his artwork.
His special ability is glowing wings. That’s it. And he can’t turn it off either so when he goes to the movies he has to have his wings covered lol
His magic weapon of choice is a baseball bat in the shape of a Roman bust lol. It’s design is terrible when it comes to practical use but man does it look cool.
Hobbies: sculpting of course, collecting crystals and rocks, also collecting old artwork, wine tasting, playing the harp, comedy shows, poker
Loved items: his favorite three rocks are aquamarine, purple amethyst and green Jasper, loves fancy rock pics, gold, old art from any culture, sparkling wine, fancy card decks, operas and instrumentals, hand buzzers, those fancy scented slimes
Olivander/Ollie (Draketale papyrus):
He is a draconic skeleton monster standing at 6’6 with a light gold magic. He has the standard horns that curl backwards and smooth standard dragon wings. He is currently 40 years old
Ollie is a true collector. He embraces his hoarding nature from his dragon ancestors and loves to surround himself with pretty things and people. Ollie is a real socialite who comes across as sweet, playful and generous but is quite the shrewd businessman underneath. However he also has a heart of gold and strong sense of Justice. Anything he’s collected over the years he’s made sure he earned the right way.
Ollie owns and operates one of the largest banks in ebott. He mainly deals with those around the farm district and mountains but his customers spread all over. He’s known for fair policies and holding up his bargains, but also being harsh on loaners who don’t pay back.
As a draconic monster, ollie has the ability to lay down runes. He is pretty competent, but prefers to hire the local guild to protect his bank and home instead. They’re the true masters
His special ability is fine polish. By rubbing a stone between his fingers he can give it a smooth beautiful polish when he concentrates. He never uses his ability and Al is terribly jealous of it
His magic weapon is a tall and thin staff with ornate pointed spikes on the top end
Hobbies: COLLECTING SHINY SH*T. Jewelry, art, bobbles, weapons, books you name it. If it’s valuable, old and ornate he loves it. He’s also a secret collector of the Batman comics and has a crush on Batman lol. Also likes raising exotic birds, interior design, jogging, book clubs, dance shows, cultural festivals, and poker
Loved items: valuables in general but is particularly keen on tapestries and metalworks, birds, wallpaper and tile samples, bathrobes, perfumes, beginner artists (he supports a lot of them and collects artists like his antiques)
Drakefell:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Barin/Barry:
He is a compact looking draconic skeleton monster. He stands at 5’10 and has a greenish grey magic color. He is currently 48 years old. He is a halfbreed with a brown soul for loyalty
Barin is the definition of duty. He never breaks a promise and always does his work with his all. He has a strong sense of Justice and despises anyone who don’t whole their ends of a bargain. He’s a harsh leader, but also knows a good balance between when to push and when to rest his “subjects”. He has a bit of a hard time allowing himself to unwind when he feels like there’s still things to do, but his loved ones can bully him into it lol. Never ever get into a bet with him. He will win.
Baron was once the leader of his clan. Sadly it’s been disbanded under the new rulers. Nowadays though he leads a guild of rune masters which surprise surprise, is mostly his old clan members lol. They cover the mountain that had the famine monsters trapped, now a large mining complex. They keep the mines maintained and also sell their services to ebott protecting buildings with rune arrays. Even the royal palace uses their runes.
As a draconic monster, Barin has the ability to lay down runes. He is considered a master at the craft and will step away from his leading to do special projects if he’s paid enough ;)
His special ability is gun-concentrate: when he’s injured, if he’s leaking “blood” (ecto), his blood reacts with the sunlight making an explosive liquid. All it needs is a tiny bit of fire to set off. It’s a very dangerous ability as the level of explosion can’t be contained, so he’s extra careful to dodge when fighting
His magic weapon is a two handed long sword with his clans coat of arms on the blade
Hobbies: creating and laying runic arrays, LISTENING TO MUSIC, he’s a massive music nerd and loves every genre, swordfighting, hunting, foraging, pedicures/manicures, stargazing/astronomy
Loved items: musicians, his clan, wild boar meat, beer, telescopes, beautiful sword scabbards, stews, his spell book, the color gold
Arwin/Ari:
He’s a large draconic skeleton standing at 6’8 with darker missy green magic. He is currently 32 years old. He is a half breed with a green soul for kindness
Arwin despite his rough upbringing in the clan always seemed to hold on to his softness. He’s a kind gentle monster and really detests fighting, but is more than capable of doing so if he needs. He’s personable and a smooth talker, he’s very popular despite his scarier looks. Hes very protective over the weaker ones in his “clan”, especially the humans and sees himself as a bit of a knight in shining armor
Arwin was a soldier for the clan and the next in line if anything happened to barin. When the clan disbanded after the crash, he became a part of the guild instead, keeping his role as his brothers loyal second in command. Arwin now works as a sort of spokesman for the guild. He handles contracts and getting the guild new deals. He also settles any conflicts between the members when barin isn’t around.
As a draconic monster, Arwin has the ability to lay down runes. He is considered a master at the craft and goes out often for rune jobs when his paper work isn’t piled up.
His special ability is dolled up: he can make another monsters magic color brighter or even a different shade by placing his hand on their face. It’s only temporary and is a fun party trick
His magic weapon is twin curved blades. They both have the clan coat of arms on the blade.
Hobbies: true crime podcasts, parties and dancing, hunting, rave/techno/fast paced music, laying down runic arrays, sword fighting
Loved items: the color sky blue, his clan, humans, honey comb and honey glazed meats, murder mystery books, dance dance revolution/just dance.
Side characters:
Marcheline (drakefell undyne): the third in command of the guild should anything happen to barin and arwin. She is faithful, incredibly strong, harsh, and has little tolerance for whiners. She trains the new guild members as well as helps keep up the mines. She is an incredibly tall draconic river monster with pitch black scales, moss green hair, and a pair of large curling horns that are dusted gold to match her gold eyes.
Farbon (drakefell grillby) he’s from a rival clan in drakefell but took to modern ebott easily. He is a blacksmith and is known for his intricate gold work. Any jeweler worth their salt buys from him. He works closely with Ollie at times.
Fafnir, the king of Draketale, a large goat monster with pitch black fur, large silver horns and wings. He’s the oldest royal on the lineup and the great grandfather of the Draketale bros. He helps zeus with the budget and regulates the banks loans and business grants. He’s a happy spouse to his beloved mate Delphyne
Delphyne, the queen of Draketale, a large goat monster with four topaz curled horns and a pair of black wings and coal grey fur. She is the queen of Draketale and the great grandmother of the Draketale bros. She is the oldest “toriel” on the rulers lineup and is neck deep in the colleges and art programs of ebott. She’s a happy spouse to her beloved mate fafnir.

Ebigane
Tumblr media
Image © @a-book-of-creatures, accessed at their site here
[The Creature Codex World Tour now arrives in Africa! Africa is perhaps the continent with the least representation in RPGs as far as the folklore and mythology of its people. Mythology about it from the outside is much more common, with colonialist impressions of vengeful mummies and living dinosaurs. I will be covering some of these tropes in the next two months, but I wanted to start with a properly African African monster.
The ebigane comes from the oral tradition of the Fang people, which is barely collected, and not at all in English (I am eternally grateful that ABOC can read French). So this is very much one version of the monster, and may not represent all of the different interpretations. But a giant, bloodthirsty chimera being represented as a good guy, serving the hero of the story like some sort of Pokémon, is a pretty cool image.]
Ebigane CR 10 NG Magical Beast This creature is a chimera of different animals, some ferocious, others less so. It has the head and tail of a rat, the horns of a buffalo and the wings of a bat. It is enormous, about the size of an elephant, and its jaws are packed with close-set fangs.
An ebigane is a carnivorous monster notable for its enthusiastic support of good causes. They follow heroes, celestials and goodly monsters such as couatls and ki-rin around like puppies, eagerly helping them in their adventures. Ebigane seek immortality in story and song, and are especially fond helping groups with a bard, in the hopes of being added to the tale.
Ebiganes understand that their natural forms are frightening, and so often make their pitch to join an adventuring party while disguised. They can assume the form of humans, albeit somewhat sloppily, and are good at taking the appearance of small, harmless animals like mice, bats and songbirds.  An ebigane may keep their true form under wraps for a while, assuming their natural appearance at the most dramatic moment to save the day. Their combat strategies are fairly straightforward: grab enemies in their jaws, tear them apart with horns, teeth and claws, make hit and run attacks against enemies too large or too slippery to grapple with.
Between adventures, an ebigane acts as a top predator in jungle and savannah ecosystems. They especially enjoy challenging themselves with big game, hunting elephants, pythons and other large and muscular prey items. Each ebigane maintains a large territory, which usually border those of a few other ebigane. Ebigane come together to gossip and trade stories, as well as to mate and raise offspring. An ebigane is considered an adult only once it has gone on a great adventure with another creature. Although ebigane do not strongly value treasure, they typically keep mementos of these exploits.

hi ok hear me out. new design/story challenge.
Step one:
Find four to five clan generators on perchance (or you can use clangen’s randomizer if you don’t want to do designs).
Step two:
Using the first generator, generate your clan’s name and any other details the generator has aside from connected characters.
Step three:
Using the other three or four generators, pick five of the list of cats you get from them and add them to the clan you generated in the previous step. You can use any method to pick them, it doesn’t have to be random so long as they’re randomly generated. This will get you 15-20 cats to mess with, and you can change their roles and ages to better suit whatever idea you have in mind for them.
Step four:
Design a story and/or look for the cats you picked. This can happen however you want it to, at this point you get 100% free reign over the challenge!
*Note: for cats outside the clan, add an extra clan or cat generator and pick any number of cats given between 1 and 5!
By the end, you should have an interesting group of characters with varied descriptions or even similar descriptions if you picked them meticulously! Here is my attempt under the cut:
Generator 1: Detailed Clan Generator by Raggedflight
Name: Harryclan
Territory: A large island covered in grassy hills with a river that runs through it, far from any other group.
Camp: Surrounded by tall grass and wheat, which makes up their dens. There is a large herb patch in the grass.
Landmarks: Abandoned Quarry (A huge, abandoned quarry filled with water. it is excellent for hunting and herb gathering.), The Blackbird Tree (An ancient cottonwood tree where many blackbirds live.), The Fallen Birch (An ancient birch that is entirely hollowed out, where many lapwings live.), and Tall Hickories (A large grove of very tall hickory trees that twolegs planted, where many smaller rodents and some foxes live.)
Common herbs: Borage, Dock, Lavender, Marigold
Rare herbs: Burdock root, Rosemary, Coltsfoot
Climate: Cool and rainy in newleaf, hot and sunny in greenleaf, warm and rainy in leaf-fall, and freezing in leaf-bare.
Ancestor meeting place: The Moonpool (A small pool surrounded by boulders, with a small river running into it)
Clan call: “Let all cats in Harryclan gather beneath the tallpile!”
Special traits: Good night vision, and can fall from heights with little injury
Notes from the rest of the info: A clan leader was recently struck down for disobeying the code, and there was a pair of old unsolved murders before that. The murders were of a leader and a warrior; the leader happened before the war and the warrior after.
Generator 2: The clan generator we’re all used to
Ravenpaw, Rookpaw, Thriftstar, Beefoot, Waxtail
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Generator 3: A pretty one with neat names that provides a little depth.
Antflower— beige and creamy-white molly with odd slightly darker-colored spotting. Educated and compassionate, keeps her den clean.
Patchpoppy— Tawny sphynx tom. Balanced and quiet.
Furledbrook— Warm brown cat with a jagged scar across their face. Disciplined and critical, the healers like them.
Twistblossom— Creamy white ticked tabby tom. Irresponsible and cheerful, wants to help everyone.
Sniffpaw— flea-ridden, creamish-orange cat with half-lidded gray and hazel eyes, a burn scar on their throat and a very short plumy tail. Wants to be named Sniffleaves; talented and easily annoyed, loves to decorate the camp with seashells.
Generator 4: A generator that provides kits and cat ages. Note: the leader it generated’s warrior name was fishfish and i love them for that.
Goldeyes: Aggressive, dull, swift tabby blue-grey tom, with a blue muzzle, and light green eyes. 59 moons old.
Thundersky: Stubborn, irritable swift grey molly with a blue-grey paw, and kind orange eyes. 56 moons.
Brokenbreeze: Caring, lean white she-cat with dull blue eyes. 39 moons old.
Larkkit (dust): Nice, affectionate, and diligent lean orange molly with green eyes. 5 moons.
Snowkit (flame): Brave, caring, and malicious small gold tom with kind blue eyes. 2 moons.
Generator 5: another with cool names, and also options for what generates!
Sparrowwish: Spotted golden molly.
Minnowthistle: greenish-brown tabby jack.
Morningwing: Black-and-white tom with a crooked jaw.
Risingstripe: Solid grey molly with pretty hazel eyes.
Downswan: yellow molly.
MY INTERPRETATION OF THIS:
Our main character, Patchpoppy, is a former kittypet once named Patches who was brought to the island by twolegs exploring, and ran off thinking they would look for him. They did, but he didn’t know that because he was never found. He wears a tattered shirt that helps him insulate and keep from getting melanomas, as he is a sphynx. He is trying to figure out who killed the leader and deputy before Poppystar, Thriftstar’s predecessor who was struck down for encouraging kits to fight and train before their 6th moon. He’s already asked Thriftstar many times about the incidents he keeps hearing about from the elder Risingstripe and her recently retired mate Downswan. His best friend is Morningwing, and multiple cats in the clan make fun of him for his lack of noticeable fur and his dirty green sweater, though Morningwing says it looks nice on him.
Thriftstar is always shutting down questions about Poppystar and whether or not she was the murderer, usually saying something like Poppystar could not have killed the leader before her, Muckstar, or his deputy Rootslash, as the events happened while she was on a moon-trip to the quarry for resource gathering. And no, it wasn’t the foxes they were at war with at the time, either, because the bodies held the scent of cat.
Patchpoppy eventually finds something important at the old crime scene, which has been abandoned for a few years because the cats are afraid to go to the spot they found both leader and deputy violently dead at. It’s an old, worn collar, something the cats of the clan shrugged off because it didn’t register as something other than a scrap of cloth to them. Patchpoppy used to have one, though, so he immediately recognized it, and brought it to the camp, declaring that there must be a murderer somewhere on the island who would have had the collar as theirs.
The cats all brush off his theory, as no one has seen a kittypet other than him in moons…
… Downswan and Risingstripe seem wary, however. Maybe they know something?
Character notes:
Ravenpaw is Morningjaw’s apprentice and why morning is not as present in the story as the best friend usually would be.
Rookpaw is Thundersky’s apprentice.
Sniffpaw is almost a warrior and is Sparrowwish’s apprentice.
Antflower is their healer/religious leader, Thriftstar is the anxious leader that Poppystar manipulated into being her little puppet, and Brokenbreeze is the deputy.
Minnowthistle, Downswan, and Risingstripe are all dating and retired.
Goldeyes wants Larkkit to be his apprentice.
Furledbrook got their scar in a fight with a fox.
Snowkit is not really malicious in a grown way, more like he just constantly plots to annoy and pester the warriors because he thinks it’s funny.
Beefoot and Waxtail are mates and the token straight couple. Larkkit is their kit.
Snowkit is Waxtail’s younger half-brother (They are Thriftstars’s kits, and his partner died recently of an illness) so the nursery is a little awkward right now because Snowkit is growing up with a niece older than him.
the remaining family trees are ambiguous rn because i dont wanna think about making an isolated clan on an island work
Thriftstar’s mother was a LaPerm that left him with the clan.

Saw that a lot of people liking my post about Haikyuu names, I'm glad you found it interesting! So I'm making another part. Choosing Karasuno names ! I'll probably make all of the team's names in other parts afterwards. (And then the other characters but uh... Seeing as there's a lot of characters in Haikyuu that'll take a while.)
So first of, Karasuno 烏野. So 烏 'Karasu' means crow or raven. I think most people who've watched the show know that, but just in case you were wondering why they were always represented as crows... Interesting to note that it looks remarkably similar to 鳥 'Tori', bird. 'No' 野 on the other hand means plains, field or rustic. So Karasuno literally means the Crow Field. Also, the school is kinda supposed to be in the middle of nowhere, so it makes sense.
澤村 大地, Sawamura Daichi. I had to search pretty far on internet because 'Sawa' 澤 wasn't anywhere in my dictionary and DeepL didn't give me much either, which is probably because it's a college level kanji. So it's a commonly used kanji in names but not anywhere else anymore, I'm pretty sure. It means "watery zone with plants and not very deep water", so basically a swamp. 村 'Mura' is a village or a small town. So 澤村 might be referring to a town based on swamps ? Again, Karasuno, concrete, etc.
大 'Dai' means big, great, the large part of [], etc. It's also used in The Great King for Oikawa. Also, don't mix it with Kitagawa Daiichi ! There's a double I and the kanjis have nothing to do with each other. 地 'Chi' means earth, ground or territory. Together, 大地 is a pretty common word used to say ground or the earth as in the solid, tangible earth. So this name was chosen for Daichi because of his role on the team : both emotionally and while playing (which we can see because he's good at defense and usually covers a big part of the field in it and is otherwise well-rounded) he's their support, the ground they stand on to play. It might seem obvious for a captain, but actually if you think about it all of the Haikyuu captains have very different styles of leadership. In that same idea, we can denote how every team member calls him by his first name, which is I think one of the only ever first name uses in Haikyuu outside of family.
This isn't the post to talk about it, but Karasuno, through Daichi, Ennoshita and Yamaguchi has a tradition of having not the strongest players as captains, for them to act as supports instead of leaders. This isn't the case in... Pretty much every other team except Inarizaki. Really interesting also to think about the differences between Oikawa's leadership and Ushijima's, considering both of their teams entirely resolve around them and they're the team leaders.
菅原 孝支, Sugawara Kōshi. 菅 'Suga' is a botanic family called in English sedge or cypercae. It has a lot of species but one of them was what was used in Egypt to make papyrus. Sedges are heavily associated with wet and tropical lands (also... swamps haha) and poor soils. They look basically like grass. It's a common Kanji in Japanese names. 原 'Hara' here pronounced wara for ease of pronunciation (the Japanese do that a lot) means field, plain, prairie, tundra, wilderness... You get it. The same kanji, pronounced 'Gen' means original or primary. Together, the two kanjis mean cedge field, but it's interesting to think about Suga, as a setter who was fired from the starter players for Kageyama, to have a Kanji that also means original in his name.
孝 'Kō' means filial piety, so it's pretty common in children names of course. It might also refer to his devotion and encouragement of the Karasuno team. 支 'Shi' means branch or support. This is of course referring to his role as a support to other players. Also !! 地支 'Chishi' so Chi and Shi together from Daichi and Kōshi, form the word for the Earthly Branches, an ancient chinese astronomy concept of division of the sky in twelve branches that formed many things in Chinese and Japanese society, including their zodiac and calendar system. No interpretation here, I just think it's fun.
I won't explain Asahi's name here, because it needs to be besides Nishinoya (their names are complementary), so that's the end of this post ! I thought about making other characters names here, like Narita and Kinoshita, but nobody remembers those guys actually exist and we know so little about them that it'd be useless.

Scar’s Adopted Brother Ch.4: Eavesdropper
Tumblr media
Ch.3 Ch.5
It's morning now, I awaken at dawn as per usual; sitting back, remembering the look of pure shock on Mufasa's face when I so easily beat him when I got sick of his drama, it was priceless.
I carefully walk outside, searching for some breakfast to give the tribe. I smell some zebra to the east and some antelope north, but I think the tribe would like some variety, so let's get both an antelope and a zebra for breakfast.
After walking for a few minutes, I spot a zebra wandering away from their herd, quickly killing it by ambushing from its blind spot. I use the same technique with the antelope, dragging back my kills and leaving them inside the cave we have taken up residence in.
It's still pretty early so I decide to go and explore the new territory.
Where my tribe is staying is full of trees and a canopy to keep us hidden, but how about we see the rest of the land. I sprint out of the trees silently, soon finding myself within an open savanna covered in grass with herds of many different animals. I look around, seeing beauty wherever the sun touches, but then my eyes reach a dark shadowy pit that has a mysterious aura to it.
I trot over until I reach the slight barrier that separates the sun-touched land from the shadows; as I look over the edge I see that there are mounds of large bones, elephants I believe they are called.
I quietly pounce over the edge and land in the clearing, but I soon hide behind a pile of bones when I hear the tumbling of bones from somewhere behind me. I peer through the bones and see Simba being pinned down by a lioness cub. 'I knew he was weak but not that weak,' I thought, watching him angrily struggle underneath her in vain. He then looks around, noticing my eye through the opening, I quickly pull back, jumping somewhere they won't see me; I can't risk him telling Mufasa, it would endanger my tribe.
"What are you looking at, Simba?" The female questions as she turns to see what it is that Simba is staring at so intently.
"Nothing, let's go over here." Simba states, wandering playfully over to a large skull. How stupid could they be, that skull smells strongly of hyena - just as I think that, I hear the cynical laughs of three hyenas, watching as they begin chasing the two lion cubs.
———————
The hyenas have chased Simba and Nala around for a minute or so now, and they currently have the cubs cornered. I see no one around to help them, so I leap in front of the hyenas, stopping them in their tracks. As much as you may think, I am no monster, and I won't allow these hyenas to kill these cubs, even though one's father may be the most aggravating alive.
"What are you doing? We are about to kill them like you asked?" One of them murmurs in a confused tone.
"Um Shengzi, I don't think that's who we think it is." Voiced another hyena.
They all pounce at me and we get into a battle of wrestling. I smack the least intelligent one unconscious for a few minutes whilst immobilizing the other two by smashing their heads together. They all fall to the ground and I release a roar so loud it causes them all to bolt away in fear. I look back at Simba and Nala, Simba looks surprised and Nala simply looks relieved that she didn't die.
"You two okay?" I question in a soft, calm tone that I use with all the cubs in my tribe.
"Yes, thank you." Replies Simba and Nala at the same time. I'm about to ask them if they want an escort back to their home but I get pushed down to the ground by a massive amount of pressure between my shoulders. I crane my neck to look up, and see Mufasa pinning me down with pure rage in his eyes while a blue bird flies overhead.
"First you attack me and now you try to kill my son and his friend. How low is your pride when they go to killing children for fun." Roars Mufasa as he grabs me and hurls me against a wall. I recoil my body in pain as the rock I land on pierces into my side. I narrow my eyes in anger and try to get up, but the rock is a part of the floor and is ripped out of me as I force myself up. The pain, however, isn't as obvious to them as I experience pain on the inside more than the outside due to intense training.
"Father, stop! He saved our lives from the hyenas!" Shrieked Simba as Nala rushed between Mufasa and myself.
"What are you talking about, he will kill you when given the chance!" Growled Mufasa as he merely pushed Nala to the side and started stalking towards me again.
"We all know how true that is, because of how you're still alive." I growled sarcastically, some blood dripping out of my mouth. Mufasa barely listens before shoving me back into the wall.
"Because I was given so many chances to kill you on our first meeting, but look at this, you're still alive." I nearly snarled at Mufasa. To be honest he looked quite angry, but the cubs seemed to be scared for my well being. Mufasa slowly takes his pressure off of me, begrudgingly allowing me to get up.
"How did you roar that loud?" Asked Simba in a scared tone as he trembled near his father.
"That's classified kid. Now if you don't mind I'll be leaving before I kill this inconsiderate father of yours." I threaten before stalking out of the area, quickly being drawn back by the scent of another lion, it's ever so subtle but it's there. I follow it and come back to where I was getting attacked, but this is a hidden overview ledge. Sitting on top is a lion who shares a striking resemblance to myself. I silently walk behind him and quickly pounce on top of him. He finds himself pinned in utter confusion, and worry is evident through the features on his face.
"I'm not Mufasa if that's what you're wondering." I state plainly as I get off of him. He turns around and sees me, anger overtaking his eyes.
"You cost me an open chance to kill that little brat today you saboteur!" He growls before lunging at me. I easily dodge his antics, resulting in him falling onto the floor.
"If you plan on killing me, you're going to need a lot more practice." I state before helping him up.
"And why do you want to kill Simba anyways?" I question.
"He is taking away my rightful place as next in line for the throne you could say." He responds dejectedly.
"What's your name, I'm Crow."
"They call me Scar." He replies.
"Are you the one that beat Mufasa in a battle?" He questions.
"That's me." I quickly mutter as I don't like Mufasa.
" .... How would you like to stay here in the pride lands? If you help me in a plan to kill Mufasa we can rule together and combine our prides." Scar explains, noting my obvious fighting capability.
"Why should I join you, my tribe is already unbeatable since I became king, and you wanted to kill your own nephew; you are stupid, why not just make him runaway so you don't have the death of the innocent and future king on your paws?" I voice as I sit down across from Scar on the rock ledge.
"It all depends on if you join me or not, so do we have an agreement?" He questions in a slightly cynical way.
"Possibly ." I reply in a grim tone with a subtle nod.
"I must inform my tribe, I will meet you here tomorrow with my tribe's decision." I say before sprinting across the land and reaching my new home in a matter of minutes. I wait for them to wake up before telling them the offer that has been proposed. I hope they stay, they are my family but if they don't wish to stay I will go with them; I am their leader after all and I must look out for them, not myself like my selfish brother had.

ALRIGHT--Intro to Splatoon here! Basically, Splatoon is this shooter game developed and published by Nintendo, played exclusively on the Nintendo switch (though the first game was a Wii-U exclusive). The game features battles between Inklings and Octolings who are evolved versions of squids and octopi respectively, and the main mode of the game involves them using weaponized ink to cover territory and "splat" people on opposing teams! I'll get into battle modes near the end, but weapons are the most extensive, so I'll be talking about that first. All of this info is for Splatoon 3--the most recent splatoon--and is somewhat true for the last two games (with differences) So!! to the basics!!!
There are many different classes of weapons
Shooters, Rollers, Chargers, Sloshers, Splatlings, Dualies, Brellas, Blasters, Brushes, Stringers, and Splatanas
Shooters are very straight forward, but not every shooter is the same. They all tend to be frontline weapons
I'm gonna go over all of them
In a very basic overview, i'll combine some weapons to the same description
Starting with Shooters!!
The Sploosh-o-matic family (3 variants), Splattershot Jr. (2 variants), Splattershot family (3 variants) and Splash-o-matic family (2 variants) are very close range, high accuracy shooters.
They're very accessible, lightweight, and flexible
Out of these the most notable is splash-o-matic (i may refer to it as Splash from now on) because of it's perfect accuracy relative to everything else
They all shoot very quickly
The aerospray mg, rg, and (not in the game but in the last two, so will likely be added) pg are all the same weapon with different kits; they're very efficient at turfing and spreading ink but not good at much else with terrible range and all
The .52 gal (2 variants) and the Nzap (2 variants) are a little longer range with a slightly higher ttk
Nzap has a great strafing time, is very lightweight
.52 gal has lower accuracy and takes a bit longer
Splattershot Pro (2 variants) are some of the longer range shooters, they have high ink consumption (basically you have to reload them a lot faster since they take up more 'ammo')
.96 gal is the same as .52 gal but a longer range and also, it's more powerful but with low accuracy and a worse firing rate (pretty slow)
Dual squelchers and Jet squelchers are very similar with a long range and low fire rate/damage, jet squelcher has a longer range than dual
L-3 Nozzlenose and H-3 Nozzlenose are the same kind of dynamic
L-3 is low damage mid range and H-3 is mid damage longer range
HOWEVER
L-3 and H-3 are both semiautomatic
Which basically means instead of holding down a shooting button
You have to tap it every time you want it to fire
So it's like carpal tunnel inducing lol
The last shooter is the squeezer
The squeezer has two firing modes: semi-automatic and fully automatic. Pulling the trigger once will squirt out a single shot with perfect accuracy, medium power, and longer range. Holding the button leads to a large amount of short range, less accurate, low powered shots.
Rollers are next
Rollers can be pushed along the ground instead of shooting, leaving a trail of ink for turfing. They attack by flinging ink and damage is also dealt if enemies come into contact with the weapon while it is being pushed, and with some weapons you can crush the opponent in one hit. Rollers can also do a thinner, long-ranged vertical swing when the player is in mid-air.
Tumblr media
So you can see the "rolling" mode above!
Splat roller is the standard roller, flexible for whatever. It has decent range and mobility
Carbon roller is a more light, mobile roller that has a fast rolling speed. It has extremely fast flicks in exchange for a very short range. It is unable to crush opponents in one hit.
Dynamo Roller is a very clunky, heavy roller. It deals high damage and can throw ink farther than all other rollers. However, it is very slow and consumes the most ink of any roller. It also takes forever to attack with a big delay between hitting the button and the actual attack.
Flingza roller is a roller that changes shape when performing a vertical swing. Its horizontal swing and rolling mode are similar to that of the Splat Roller, while its vertical swing is slow but has better range, inking, and damage like the dynamo (but not as much)
Big swig roller is like the aerospray of rollers if it makes sense; it inks a lot more than other rollers and has wider range. It is extremely ink efficient and fast while rolling. Its swings are somewhat quick but tend to be weaker compared to other rollers. It cannot splat opponents with a single horizontal swing, and it cannot crush opponents in one hit unlike most other rollers, so it kills pretty slowly compared to other rollers.
Next up we have chargers
They are mostly just...Snipers. Consider them snipers.
You just charge shots like loading them, similarly to loading a shot in a sniper rifle, I guess.
The standard charger is the splat charger, featuring a long range and a decent charge time.
Squiffer is a short-range charger with a fast charge time
E-Liter 4k is a charger with extremely good range (likely the longest of any weapon of the game) and amazing damage in exchange for a slow charge time and heavy ink consumption.
Bamboozler 14 MK I is a mid-range charger with an extremely fast charge time. However, its fully charged shots cannot splat opponents in a single hit unlike most other chargers.
Goo tuber is mid-range charger that can hold both full and partial charges for an exceptionally long time at the cost of a veeeeeery slow charge time. A single partially charged shot from this weapon can deal enough damage to splat an undamaged target on its own. However, it's very bad in matches and isn't used often competitively.
Snipewriter 5h is a long-range charger that holds five, medium-damage shots per full charge so you don't have to charge each shot separately, but it needs two hits to splat an opponent. It's like a shooter version of a charger with a shorter range as well
Next up are Sloshers
Sloshers are single-shot, bucket-like weapons that hurl ink in an arc. The ink can be hurled over obstacles to hit opponents as well. Some sloshers allow the player to ink in different ways, such as hurling ink in three different directions simultaneously or shooting out long-range projectiles which explode on impact with solid surfaces.
Tumblr media
They look similar to that
Or some look more like washing machines
The one in the image is the regular slosher, with balanced performance. It can curve its sloshes to cover a wider area.
Tri slosher is a slosher that throws ink in three directions simultaneously. It has a high fire rate, but lower damage output and range.
Sloshing machine is a Slosher that launches a small mortar-like glob that is trailed by a vortex of ink. The vortex has a small splash damage radius, while the glob itself does higher damage, with a smaller hitbox.
It needs a pic though since that sounds confusing af
Tumblr media
It's like its own projectile
Bloblobber is a long-ranged slosher. This bathtub of a slosher fires a line of four bubbles which will bounce along the ground and can even reflect on walls. It's also the only slosher that can splat in one swing.
The projectiles in this one are just little orbs
Explosher is one slosher that shoots a slow, long-range projectile that explodes on impact with solid surfaces. It has a high ink consumption cost and pretty poor mobility. However the projectile can keep moving even after hitting an enemy.
Finally the Dread Wringer fires two sloshes in succession, allowing for a wide attack area when spread out or concentrated damage when aimed at the same spot. It has good range and inking capabilities at the cost of a pretty low fire rate.
Next up: Splatlings
Splatlings are minigun type weapons that generally have a high rate of fire and considerable range. In-game, they operate similar to chargers but release a stream of small ink bullets instead of a single powerful one. Like chargers, a full charge is necessary to achieve the maximum potential range and firing duration. They all tend to have pretty poor mobility like the chargers as well
Heavy splatling is the standard splatling. Its stats are well-rounded, having no glaring strengths or weaknesses.
The Mini Splatling is a light splatling with a short charge time but shorter range. It allows users to strafe quickly while charging and firing.
Hydra Splatling is the Splatling with the longest range in its class. It can fire continuously for a lengthy period of time, with the drawback being its ink consumption and high charge time. When fully charged, a high-damage feature activates, allowing users to splat opponents with only three hits.
Ballpoint Splatling is a Splatling with two different firing modes, an initial short ranged firing mode with a high fire rate and a secondary firing mode that has a slower fire rate but longer range and perfect accuracy. Unlike most other splatlings, it can interrupt its fire to recharge so the charge time isn't as bad. Upon completing a full charge, subsequent charges will retain the secondary mode attributes until the charge is entirely expended.
The Nautilus is a shorter ranged Splatling with a medium charge rate. The weapon boasts the ability to store its charge much like some chargers and can interrupt its fire to recharge. Its accuracy in the air is comparable to its accuracy when grounded.
And finally the heavy edit splatling is a Splatling with a slow charge time, but a very high fire rate when fully charged.
Then dualies!!
Dualies are paired sets of ink guns that give their user the ability to dodge roll. After a dodge roll, the two dualies are held together by the player, enhancing their performance in various ways depending on the dualie. It’s like dual wielding two guns
Splat dualies are the first available pair of dualies in the Splatoon series. They feature balanced performance, having no particular strength or weakness.
Dapple dualies have a quick dodge roll, a high fire rate, and high-damage shots that splat opponents in three hits. However, they are quite lacking in range.
Glooga dualies are a long-range, high-damage pair of dualies with a low fire rate. Shot damage and range increases after a dodge roll, splatting opponents with two hits.
Dualie Squelchers have the longest range in its class, as well as the most mobile dodge roll. The dodge roll is quick and allows the user to continue to slide instead of being locked in place. It’s basically the dual squelcher times 2
Tetra Dualies are big on mobility. They allow up to four consecutive dodge rolls instead of the normal two, and also allow shooting while rolling.
Off to brellas:
Brellas are shotgun-like weapons with deployable shields. Depending on the brella model, the shield can be held in front of the user or launched forward. Brellas can also fire while the brella is opened giving the user a shield like cover, but the cover can usually be destroyed after a few shots.
The splat brella is the standard Brella, featuring a middle range and high damage.
The tenta brella is a heavier brella with a larger, more durable shield. Its shots have longer range and deal enough damage to splat opponents in one hit at the cost of a slow rate of fire.
The undercover brella is a lightweight brella that can be fired while its shield is open. In exchange, it is unable to launch its shield. The rate of fire is quick compared to the other brellas, but the damage dealt by each shot is low and its shield is weaker than other Brellas.
They also just–look like umbrellas, to help with the visual
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then we have blasters
Blasters are weapons that commonly fire large globs of ink with a delayed explosion. Often these explosions aren't the best for inking turf, but better for splatting opponents, for example, the explosion allows users to attack opponents located behind obstacles, around corners, or while on lower ground.
The standard blaster, rightly named just the Blaster, has a slow firing speed but is well-rounded otherwise.
The Luna Blaster is a blaster with short range but above average fire rate, blast radius, and ink efficiency. It is capable of splatting an opponent with one direct hit.
The range blaster is a revised version of the Blaster that boasts higher range at the cost of a slower fire rate.
The clash blaster is a blaster that fires huge short-ranged blasts in very quick succession, but its low damage makes it hard to splat opponents with it.
The rapid blaster fires long range blasts at a good fire rate, with reduced damage and blast radius.
The rapid blaster pro is a modified version of the Rapid Blaster that can hit at even longer ranges, but has a slower fire rate, and uses more ink per shot.
The S-Blash 92’ is a slow-firing, one-shot capable blaster with two firing modes, short-range and long-range. The short-range mode is triggered by shooting in the air, and fires a huge short-ranged blast. The long-range mode is triggered by shooting on the ground, and fires a long-ranged, high-velocity shot with a small blast radius.
Then Brushes
Brushes can be pushed along the ground, much like rollers. They are especially fast but leave a narrow trail of ink. They do not deal nearly as much contact damage, making crushing enemies virtually impossible. However, instead of flinging large waves of ink, brushes quickly swipe from side to side, flicking many smaller globs. This rapid-fire flick is their primary means of spreading ink and attacking enemies, making them ideal for fast, close-combat action.
The inkbrush is a fast but short-ranged brush. When pushed along the ground, the user moves at extremely high speed, and leaves behind a narrow trail of ink. Damage is low, as the user needs to land four globs of ink to splat an opponent.
The octobrush is a slower brush with decent range. Movement speed while pushing it along the ground is a bit slower compared to the Inkbrush. Only three hits are needed to splat an opponent.
The Painbrush is the last brush with long range and slow swing speed. Its damage is the highest one among the brushes: if landed at close range, only two splashes of ink are necessary to splat an opponent, and four splashes of ink at maximum range.
Then stringers–
Stringers are large bow weapons that fire similar to a charger. They have vertical and horizontal shots, similar to the rollers. They shoot three strings of ink per shot.
The tri-stringer is a stringer that has two levels of charge to unleash charged shots that briefly freeze before exploding, but cannot store its charge.
the reeflux 450 is a more lightweight stringer that can store its charge, but cannot fire explosive shots. With tap shots it deals about the same damage as the Tri-Stringer but fully charged it deals more damage.
AND THE SPLATANAS AS THE LAST WEAPON GROUP
Splatanas are sword-like weapons that are used similar to a brush, without the rolling function. Instead, if the shooting button is held, it will charge a more powerful vertical swing. The shots will travel in the air for some time, splashing ink beneath them.
The standard Splatana is the Splatana Wiper. When the button is tapped, it performs a quick slash that fires a fast-moving ink-trailing projectile. When charged up, it performs a stronger vertical slash. If the charge is released while moving forward, the user will lunge forward a short distance before firing.
Finally the splatana stamper is a heavier Splatana compared to the standard. It has a slower rate of fire, but its ink projectiles are wider, travel further, and deal more damage. These aren't all the weapons as there have been new ones since I wrote this, but they're all pretty similar and they all fall into the main types I discussed.
Each weapon comes with a kit (like they do in many other games); so each weapon comes with a “sub” and a “special”
Subs are usually bombs
the og one is the splat bomb, a basic bomb that explodes after a short period of time. It can be rolled or thrown. The explosion timer will only progress while the bomb is touching the ground.
suction bombs are a bomb that can be attached to any surface. It explodes after a moderate period of time and has a larger blast radius than the Splat Bomb.
Burst bomb is a bomb that explodes on impact. Multiple Burst Bombs can be thrown without having to refill the ink tank. They deal less damage than other bombs; two direct hits or three indirect hits will splat an opponent, or they can be used in combination with the main weapon.
A curling bomb is a bomb that travels in a straight line across the floor, leaving a trail of ink and bouncing off of walls and obstacles. It explodes after its timer expires. The maximum distance of the Curling Bomb can be shortened by holding the deployment button to 'cook' the timer before release. This makes the blast radius larger.
The autobomb walks towards any nearby enemies before exploding.
An ink mine is just a bomb that hides in ink once planted. It deals damage to enemies that get too close. It also applies a tracking effect to its victims, letting everyone on the user's team know where the victim is.
Toxic mist is a bomb that releases a cloud of poison mist which causes negative status effects to opponents that come into contact with it. Affected enemies will suffer from reduced mobility and gradual loss of ink supply.
The point sensor is a bomb that explodes in a spherical cloud. The cloud tags enemies with a tracking effect that shows their location to everyone on the user's team.
The splash wall is a barrier made of falling ink. It blocks enemy movement and enemy fire.
The sprinkler continually sprays ink in a circular area around itself in a staggering motion, until it is broken by enemy fire or the deployer gets splatted (aka killed). It can be thrown onto virtually any surface.
The squid beakon is a device that allows the user and their teammates to Super Jump (basically teleport)  directly to its location.
The fizzy bomb is a bomb that is capable of exploding multiple times. The bomb can be held and shaken like a soda (aka shaking the controller) in order to increase the weapon's explosive potency, increasing the number of times it can explode.
The torpedo is a device that transforms into a floating homing missile when within range of a target. The missile itself is incapable of splatting an opponent alone but will deal a large amount of damage. The missile can also be shot down by opposing players.
And lastly
The angle shooter is a marker-shaped projectile that shows an opponent's position if hit directly or by the trail it produces when thrown. It bounces off any wall it hits, leaving a small splash of ink behind. It deals the least damage of any sub weapon on a direct hit, and the trail deals no damage.
Now specials
The Big Bubbler is a stationary barrier that protects from enemy ink.
Booyah bomb is actually the special I use on aerospray, basically the user holds up a glowing ball of ink that charges up over time and can be thrown once fully charged to make an ink explosion. The user and their teammates can use the "Booyah!" signal (it’s like an ingame chat kind of thing) to charge up faster and it gives slight special charge buffs to those who press booyah.
The Crab Tank allows players to ride around on it and use its turrets and cannons, with two modes of fire (a fast, less damaging one, and a slower, high damage one). It also protects the player and rolls around in the form of a ball.
The Ink Storm creates a rain cloud of ink. The rain cloud gradually drifts above the map, inking the ground and damaging any enemies beneath it.
The Ink Vac is a vacuum cleaner that sucks up ink that is still airborne and fires it back as a super attack. It can also be used to suck up ink that’s being fired at the user, like as a shield.
The Inkjet gives its user the ability to hover in the air and shoot powerful blaster-like projectiles. Once it expires, the user automatically Super Jumps (teleports) back to where they first activated it.
The Killer Wail 5.1 is a modified Killer Wail (a special from a previous game). Six floating speakers move autonomously and attack with smaller sound waves, similar to laser beams, that chase down enemies.
The Kraken Royale turns the player into a very large, invincible Kraken, that can splat opponents through a melee attack or a charged attack. It allows free travel through enemy ink.
The Reefslider is an inflatable shark that the player rides on to dash forward a certain distance before exploding.
The Super Chump fires many decoys that trick the opponent into thinking that a player is landing from a Super Jump (the teleportation gives off a marker on the map that people tend to camp). The decoys explode after a short amount of time, but the opponent can destroy the decoys before they explode
The Tacticooler is a mini-fridge that when set up, contains four drinks that grant special effects, like boosting the player's speed and respawn time.
The Tenta Missiles allow users to lock on to opponents before firing ten to twenty missiles between the locked-on targets.
The Triple Inkstrike allows players to throw three missile beacons and fire missiles at where the beacons land, creating explosions of ink upon impact.
The Trizooka is a bazooka-like weapon that fires three large blasts at once and can be fired three times in total for each use.
The Ultra Stamp is a large hammer which can be slammed repeatedly while advancing forwards and also has a jump attack. The weapon can also be thrown as a long-range attack, with the consequence of ending the special early.
The Wave Breaker is a special that upon setting up, will send out wave signals across that ground that deal damage and mark opponents. Similar to a jump rope, if the opponent jumps over the wave, no damage is dealt to them.
The Zipcaster allows players to latch onto walls from a distance and zip over to them while still being able to use their main weapon. Once it expires, the user automatically comes back to where they first activated it, similarly to the inkjet.
Now some game mechanics
Squid jumps are teleports, you can tp to any current player location and your own spawn
The game uses motion controls and/or stick controls
You have a button for shooting (zr), a sub button for throwing subs (r), and a special button (clicking the right stick down)
You can submerge yourself in ink to recharge your ink tank (aka ammo) and it also allows for faster movements, but no shooting or using subs while in ink, you can also only do it in your own ink
You can pull up the map to see your teammates and covered/uncovered ground
In this game you can pick where you spawn (in a little limited area)
There's also a jump button
You can do squid rolls by going in one direction and then quickly jumping and swapping directions while submerged in ink
Squid surges allow you to climb walls quickly by charging up a surge
Also, when in ink, you can paint walls and climb up them
You can also swim through grates
The game is always in 3rd person POV
And you have different counters for stuff on the display
Tumblr media
The top bar shows the time left in the match and the players on each team
Each player shows their weapon, and in the map, you can see their main abilities (a gear thing I'll cover later)
When someone has been splatted (knocked out or killed in this case) you can also see that on the display (the blacked out squid icon) and it also shows the general ratio of the people in the match
It shows a danger bar if one team is losing by a lot
And if it's only somewhat, the winning team's icons will grow larger than the other as a first indicator
The top right gauge is your special gauge, it just shows when your special is charged. The little green circle also shows your sub!
The "0224p" thing is a counter for the amount of turf covered
The bottom left shows your two in game comments–you can say booyah or this way and send a signal to your teammates
An example of a minimap
Tumblr media
The bottom left is you
If you look at the players, under their name (from left to right) you can see their main weapon, sub weapon, and special, and then their 3 main abilities
The other named characters are your teammates and the dotted lines show where they are on the map
By hovering over them and clicking a you can tp to them
You can see the area with turf on it on the map
Then the top right block shows the opposite team, and their main weapons/sub weapons/specials and their main abilities
It also shows who's dead with a large X
The d-pad inputs next to each person on your team is just the hotkey you can press to auto lock onto them so you can squid jump to or easily find them
If you have any squid beakons set up for your team you can also see them on the map
Now
the main "regular" and unranked mode is turf
The aim is to cover the most of a map with their team's ink color; the team with the highest ink coverage after three minutes wins the match.
There are only 2 teams in this (and most) of the modes, and each of these 2 teams has 4 players
Then there are 4 ranked modes
Splat zones is a mode where you fight to keep control of specially marked zones on the map by covering them with their ink., like "king of the hill". When all Zones are under a team's control, the team's timer counts down toward zero. The timer will stop if the opposing team takes control of the Zones, and their timer will begin to count down. When the holding team is swapped, it also adds a penalty time onto the other team's counter for a certain amount of seconds (to make it more fair, in case they've been holding the zone for a while. However, it doesn't affect their actual time score: if you got down to 5 seconds left and then get added 70 extra seconds, your score is still 5 seconds left.) Both teams start at 100 on their counters. The team whose timer gets to zero wins the match. After 5 minutes, if neither team gets their timer to zero, the team who got their timer the lowest wins.
Tumblr media
You can see the zone is marked with lasers on the ground, and the new counter underneath the players bar. The little square represents the zone and how taken over it is, and the score counters are on either side of it. The larger, colored counter shows which team is in possession of the zone
Next up, Tower control
In tower control, players compete for control of a central Tower platform, which will move through the stage towards enemy territory along a path when a player stands on it. If the Tower is overtaken by an opponent, it will reverse direction. Whichever team rides the tower to their respective goal spot at the end of the path wins. It has to stop through 2 check points on each side before reaching the end as well
Tumblr media
The bar where the splatzones were show you how far the tower has reached on both sides, and the boxes represent checkpoints
The next mode, Rainmaker, is similar with "checkpoints" you can use, and  a final goal you have to reach
But in this one, players compete for control of the Rainmaker, a unique weapon used only in this mode. The goal is to take it into the enemy base and place it on a pedestal, ending with a knockout if either team does so. The Rainmaker is very heavy, preventing the user from performing a Super Jump, but can fire ink tornadoes
It also has a shield you must pop before you can pick it up (whenever it's dropped)
Only one player can hold the rainmaker at a time
It replaces your weapon and you can't use subs or specials as well, at least not until you die or finish the game
Tumblr media
The bar is almost the same to the tower control one so here's a more fun picture
Finally (the worst mode) clam blitz (no picture it sucks)
The objective of Clam Blitz is to pick up clams, which are scattered around the stage, and deposit them into the shielded goal near the opposing team's base (it's like a hoop). Players picking up clams may choose to build the Power Clam (worth 10 clams) needed to break open the opponent's goal or toss the clams to teammates so that they can build the Power Clam; completed Power Clams can also be tossed between teammates, as carrying them introduces a risk to the carrier by showing the location of the carrier to all opponents.
It has another score counter and if you make it to 100 clams in the other team's basket, you win
All of these are longer modes played for 5 minutes (with overtime if needed), turf is just 3 minutes long
During the splatfest  (special event happening rn, will lore dump properly later maybe) you can only play turf war (with the possibilities of turf war battles being worth 10x, 100x, or even 333x more than usual) or tricolor battles
In Tricolor Turf War, the goal is the same as Turf War: ink the most ground to win. It is a team of four versus two teams of two. One team of four, chosen at random, starts in the center of the stage and acts as defenders. Two of their spawn drones will start on the left; the other two on the right. The other teams, known as attackers, will send in two players each at the regular spawn areas of the map. The defending team will try to hold a majority of the map while the attacking teams will cooperate to overtake the first-place team.
The defending team also has another goal: prevent the attackers from getting the two Ultra Signals. When an attacking player touches the Ultra Signal, it will be charged with ink to send a signal to one of the members of Deep Cut. That member will then send a Sprinkler of Doom to the battlefield, which will spray large amounts of ink around the stage, giving an advantage to the team that claimed the Ultra Signal. Players can splat others if they are trying to get a hold of the Ultra Signal as well.
Players can join Tricolor Battles alone (in which case they are paired with a random player), or team up with a friend. Each attacking team is one pair, and the defending team consists of two.
You can see the player bar is split up into 3 teams as well now
And you can see a visual percentage of how much of the map each team has inked (with a bar representing that also included)
LASTLY FOR THE MODES IS SALMON RUN
It's a co-op multiplayer mode where up to four players collect Power Eggs and Golden Eggs by defeating Salmonids (spawned in enemies) and then deposit the Golden Eggs in an egg basket. You have 3 waves (and sometimes a 4th against a harder that doesn't affect if you win or lose) and a quota of golden eggs to meet for each one
There are different like, match events for each wave, but that's another topic
Basically all you do is fight boss salmonids and regular salmonids and get eggs!
I’ll do some of the miscellaneous / other game elements in another ask, but this is all I have typed up at the moment!
This is amazing!! It’s so in detail as well, I can’t help but feel amazed!
It makes me want to buy it, in truth! I like to play as the inkling girl in Mario Cart because she looks cool and that was about all I knew of Splatoon before.
The game does look really good though so I might try asking for it!

❝[11:05]❞
In the meadowverse woosan and their feathery escapade,, requested by the lovely @toomanygiggles
Tumblr media
"....what?" Wooyoung trails off, staring at San in a shocked manner as his star-crossed lover proudly presents the offending item. His faerie boyfriend grins widely "It's a feather! It fell off of one of the birds in the forest and it's just gotta be the softest thing I've ever seen!" he chirps, clearly excited by the prospect of him being able to use said offending item. Ever since last year where the two dived into their first ticklish escapade, San has been trying out new things on him. New spots, new methods, new tools. Wooyoung was usually up for it, if not a little hesitant at first.
However, feathers felt like an entirely different territory. His eyes lock with his pretty partner. His iridescent wings shimmer as they softly twitch and flutter every now and again whilst his head tilts to the side. His hair is a lovely light shade of blonde that makes him look cute, soft. Yet, with this fluffy white feather pinched between his index finger and thumb, he looks somewhat dangerous. Not actually dangerous, Wooyoung doesn't think San could ever threaten his safety at all. He was just too nice. The elven male had a rather large hunch, though, that some amount of ticklish torment would commence shortly.
And what a smart elf he was.
San gently takes his ankle. Wooyoung knows that when coming to see his boyfriend in private, he doesn't need to wear shoes. Not that elves were particularly big on shoes, most wore adornments like chains or rings instead, but certainly with how much he and San enjoyed their ticklish moments together - they had decided footwear was unnecessary. San sends him a small grin, it's laced with mischief as he has both of Wooyoung's ankles propped up on his lap. "Ready..?~" he asks with a playful hum.
Wooyoung doesn't think he's ever ready to get the undeniable urge to laugh, but he nods anyway because the stress of the Elven Clan was becoming too much for him. "I'm.. r-reheheeheady,, ohohohoh gohosh!" Wooyoung snorts softly, covering his mouth with one hand as San gingerly strokes his leftmost arch with the feather. San doesn't dilly-dally once he had the reaction he's after, he gently scribbles his fingers over his elven boyfriend's other foot. Wooyoung's laughter grows louder and it goes up an octave as the ticklish sensation grows. "Ohohohohoh, suhuhugar!-" Wooyoung curses "Thahahahaat's bad!!"
Like normal when they try something new, San finds that he wants to see where else Wooyoung is feather sensitive. He swipes the little fluffy feather on the back of his partner's knee, cooing at the way Wooyoung squeaks. The two of them had fell into a routine already where once every few meet-ups,, they'd have a tickle session. Wooyoung would always be the lee, which he preferred, and San the ler. Not that the faerie wasn't ticklish, he just preferred to be the one tickling than the one recieving. He was able to appreciate Wooyoung's laughter more like this.
"I like you like this," San mumbles as he moves forward to peck Wooyoung's lips sweetly. "You're really cute, can i do your tummy next?" there's a little smirk on his face that Wooyoung just can't say no to. San seats himself on his boyfriend's hips and pulls up his linen shirt so that it sits just under his ribcage; his soft, milky tummy exposed. "Coochie coo~" San sings, brushing the feather over Wooyoung's naval. "Mmhmhmhmhahahaa! Eeeheheeeheeek, Sahahahaan!!"
From his tummy, San traveled upwards... and upwards again until eeevery area had been explored by the little feather. Wooyoung was out of breath and sweetly asking him to stop, and how could San deny him really? "Hhaah.. Sannie that was so mean," the elf pouts up at his boyfriend who's still grinning down at him. "Watch the pout, honey, if you aren't careful I might just tickle it off of your face~" San teases him, wiggling the feather at him. Wooyoung's cheeks bloom with a soft rouge and he huffs. "Someone needs to put this little faerie in place..."

Yet Another Power of Three AU
Okay so a couple of important things to know before I get into the actual AU
1. StarClan
If we look at StarClan in the canon books, the way they're portrayed is incredibly inconsistently. Sometimes they're this all powerful force, other times they can't stop tragedies from happening. Sometimes they help the Clans, other times their prophecies do more harm than good. Sometimes the reasoning behind their actions is good, other times... not so much. All of this can largely be explained by lack of communication between authors, no series bible and a general lack of effort in keeping things consistent - but that's boring. Instead, I believe that every action StarClan takes can be explained if you look at them as manipulative and power hungry, using the Clans to not only sustain themselves but to further their own power. The best part is, this theory is (vaguely) rooted in canon.
It's heavily implied that StarClan gains power the more cats worship them (cats fade as they are forgotten - aka they are no longer worshipped (it could be argued that everytime a cat mentions StarClan they would probably be thinking of dead cats they know up there - therefore indirectly praying to them. Is this a stretch? Yes, definitely. Do I care? No.) so the opposite could be seen as true - more worship = more power.).
The results of this can be seen even in the canon books. In The Prophecies Begin, StarClan can only cover the moon and appear in dreams. However, in Omen of The Stars, StarClan cats are able to grant cats powers and manifest in the real world (and the Dark Forest grows more powerful - but I'll get back to that later.). What was the two biggest changes between TPB and OoTS? Clan sizes increasing, and the amount of disasters that occur, forcing the Clans to turn to StarClan/thank StarClan after the disaster is averted. Coincidence? Probably. But if we ignore the real world causes for these events (Clan sizes increasing due to more characters and more books, and more disasters because the new arc needs to one up the previous arcs) we see a direct correlation - especially in The New Prophecy and Power of Three. The main plot of The New Prophecy involves the Clans homes being destroyed, and them being forced to relocate. A strong emphasis is placed on StarClan being crucial to Clan life (eg cats worry they won't find a way to communicate with StarClan, they thank StarClan multiple times, ect). What happens in the very next arc? StarClan gives cats superpowers.
If we can assume that StarClan gains power the more they are worshipped, wouldn't it make sense for them to manipulate the Clans to gain more power? Purposefully sending vague signs and prophecies so the Clans are forced to turn to them, putting the Clans in danger time and time again only for them to be saved at the last minute and thank StarClan for helping them, routinely giving literal children the responsibility of saving the Clans, even rigging the Great Battle?
If the Great Battle was truly meant to happen (which I'm pretty sure it was? Rock mentions the Three reincarnating triggered the Great Battle or smth) wouldn't it make sense for StarClan to rig it in their favour? It would explain why they would ignore the Dark Forest training living cats to fight on their side, even though StarClans territory is right next to the Dark Forest and I'm pretty sure a StarClan warrior went into the DF and saw living cats training there? There's more cats in StarClan then there is in the Dark Forest (since the bar for entering StarClan seems to be incredibly low - Ashfur and Rainflower are proof of that), and StarClan cats are in way better condition than the starving, injured Dark Forest cats. And yet StarClan does nothing until the final battle.
Since the Great Battle has to happen, StarClan would likely work with the Dark Forest to ensure the best outcome for both of them. If the Dark Forest is defeated too easily, they aren't seen as a threat, and StarClan doesn't seem as powerful. At the same time, if StarClan barely defeats the Dark Forest, they seem weak. However, if they strike the right balance between the two, the Dark Forest is seen as a threat, while
StarClan is seen as powerful and the Clans saviours, which would give both groups more power. And the best way to strike that balance would be allowing the Dark Forest to train living cats.
"But Nintendont, why would the Dark Forest ever help StarClan?" I hear you cry. It's simple - more power for both of them, with minimal losses from both sides. It's a win-win scenario. Both groups are alike in a way - filled with manipulative cats who will stop at nothing to gain more power. Not to say that all StarClan cats are manipulative. The ones at the bottom of the hierarchy (normal, background characters who will fade in a few generations) experience StarClan the way the Clans believe it is - a peaceful afterlife. It's only as you climb the ranks and become more well known that the corruption really exposes itself - the very top of StarClan (the cats spoken of in prophecies) who control everything are known to threaten or outright punish those just below them to ensure their loyalty - or their silence.
2. The Spirits/The Judge
This section is a little less rooted in canon, although some elements are.
The Spirits are a group of nameless, faceless cat spirits from before even the Ancient Tribe. Many, many years has worn away all memories until they are nothing more than a conduit, receiving prophecies from stars know where and passing them down to StarClan, who in turn passes them to the Clans. (This is implied in one of the Super Editions - someone receives a prophecy in StarClan and passes it onto the living cats.)
The Spirits have control over StarClan, but in a limited sense. StarClan is forced to pass the prophecies given to them on to the Clans, but they are free to deliver them as vaguely as they wish (which explains the vague prophecies the Clans have received over the years eg the Fire and Tiger prophecy - these are just prophecies StarClan doesn't want the Clans to receive as they may solve the issue without StarClan if the prophecy is delivered clearly.)
The Judge is a notable Spirit, as it is the only Spirit to remain distinct from the others. The Judges role is just that - to Judge. When a cat dies, the Judge will take their spirit to a sort of limbo between the living world, StarClan, and the Dark Forest and will then decide where they belong.
The only control StarClan has over the Judge is delaying their judgement of a cat indefinitely. This is often done to perform something called binding - aka binding a cats spirit to something in the living world, leaving them trapped there until StarClan decides to release them and allow the Judge to take them onwards.
Some of the more notable bound cats include Rock, who was bound to the tunnels by StarClans ancestors after protesting the sharpclaw trials that took place there (the trials were effective for the ancestors at the time - dead cats (particularly children) means family mourning and praying to the ancestors)). Fallen Leaves was a similarly bound spirit, trapped in the same tunnels due to the amount of time he spent with Rock's ghost - the ancestors feared he was picking up some of Rock's disdain towards the ancestors.
Midnight was also bound, but was an interesting case as she marked the first, and only time the Spirits made a new rule regarding the ancestors/StarClan. Back in the tribe days, Midnight was a cat whose name has faded from memory. Her thirst for knowledge lead her to being the first and only living cat to enter the ancestors territory uninvited. The ancestors, outraged, killed her instantly, but this angered the Spirits, who forced the ancestors to give her new life, and made a new rule forbidding the ancestors from ever directly harming a living cat. The ancestors, angered at the Spirits order, bound the cat to the body of a badger and cursed her with immortality and knowledge of everything.
AU time
From this point onwards, this goes from just headcanon and speculation of events that could have happened in canon to me taking canon and throwing it out of the window. You have been warned.
In this universe, Hollyleaf was actually given a power - the ability to sense absolute truth and the morally correct choice. The Three's abilities were intended by the Spirits to be used before (Jay), during (Lion), and after (Holly) the Great Battle to lead the Clans. Jayfeathers dream walking and emotion sensing would have been used to detect potential traitors among the Clans before the battle even happened, Lionblazes invulnerability would have been used to aid the Clans in battle, and Hollyleaf's ability to sense the truth and the morally correct choice would have been used to rebuild the Clans with loyal cats, and help the Clans recover from the aftermath of the Great Battle.
However, the Spirits could never have foretold the corruption in StarClan, and how that would impact the Power of Three prophecy and the Great Battle. Instead of Hollyleaf using her power to find loyal cats, StarClan (correctly) feared her power exposing them for the manipulative cats they were.
As Hollykit, her powers only exposed cats lies if they knew they were lying. This lead to a divide between her and Squirrelflight from the beginning, as she knew her 'mother' was lying. Hollykit instead grew closer to Brambleclaw, her only parent who wasn't lying about being her parent. However, as she grew and her power began manifesting more, StarClan grew nervous. They knew if Hollyleaf was allowed to mature and reach the peak of her power, she would turn the Clans on StarClan - and the stars couldn't allow that.
StarClans plan was simple. They began slowly increasing the strength of Hollypaw's power, while at the same time sending her strange dreams of being attacked by crows or drowning in countless leaves. As her power increased, Hollypaw began sensing more and more lies, even if the cat themselves thought they were telling the truth. This ever increasing amount of lies left Hollypaw feeling isolated and paranoid, believing everyone in the Clan had turned against her - particularly her mother, who had been lying from the start. It all came to a point on the night of her and Lionpaws warrior ceremony. Lionblaze and Jaypaw confronted the newly named Hollyleaf for her behaviour during the latter half of their apprenticeship, especially her behaviour towards Squirrelflight. After all, their mother was trying her best. This left Hollyleaf on the edge, one push away from falling. And this push came when Brambleclaw - the one person Hollyleaf felt she could trust - congratulated her, saying how proud he was to be her father. This lie from the one cat Hollyleaf felt she could trust was too much.
Overwhelmed with grief, anger and fear, Hollyleaf ran blindly out of camp and towards the tunnels where she, Jaypaw and Lionpaw had rescued the lost kits - the last time she had felt truly connected to her siblings. As she ran into the tunnels, a 'coincidental' rockfall crushed her, killing her instantly. To ensure that Hollyleaf wouldn't interfere with their plans further, StarClan bound her to the tunnels alongside Fallen Leaves.
After the loss of a third of the Three, the Spirits were forced to take the Fourth Cat - Dovewing - and make her into one of the Three. Her power was unsuited to Hollyleaf's original purpose (Dovewing was originally intended to work alongside Jayfeather as both a medicine cat and seer, searching the physical world while Jayfeather searched the minds of cats - both looking for possible traitors) - and the Spirits knew it. They were desperate.
StarClan was displeased at the reformation of the Three. They had hoped that by removing Hollyleaf, the prophecy would fail - their fear had spread to the Three as a whole - after all if Hollyleaf could turn against them, couldn't the other Three? The last thing they wanted was an invincible cat or someone who could read their true intentions suspecting them. But they knew they couldn't influence the Three again without the Spirits suspecting something and stopping them.
Instead of influencing the Three, StarClan turned to the next best option - influencing another cat in the Clans. If they chose a cat that wasn't important to the Spirits, they were free to do anything they wanted - and Ashfur was the perfect cat. His deep seated resentment towards Squirrelflight and the Three made him especially receptive to StarClans influence, as they slowly built up his rage towards Jayfeather, Lionblaze and Squirrelflight.
This rage met its peak at the night of the fire. Lionblaze and Squirrelflight had stayed in the burning camp to help Jayfeather, and Dovepaw (Lionblazes apprentice instead of Jayfeathers as the Spirits had planned) refused to leave her mentor. However the fire grew out of control, trapping them in the camp and leading to Squirrelflight taking them up the secret exit.
From here, the events are similar to the iconic fire scene - Ashfur blocking the only safe path as the flames close in, screaming his incel rant at Squirrelflight. Until - Squirrelflight yells at Ashfur that this has nothing to do with the other cats here - especially Dovepaw, who is only an apprentice. Ashfur's usual whining, petulant mew deepens into a rasp, and he hisses "Dovepaw has more to do with this than you could ever know," his manic energy gone and replaced with a deep, pure rage as he glares at the Three - completely ignoring Squirrelflight. His usually icy blue eyes seem to be reflecting the colour of the fire aroud them - a deep, burning orange.
The flames grow even closer as Ashfur stands, unmoving. Lionblaze attacks him with everything he has, but Ashfur doesn't seem to notice. As the fire begins singeing their fur, Squirrelflight screams at at Ashfur that she'll do anything, just please let them go. Ashfur simply watches coldly as the fire consumes the five of them, until the very end, where his flaming body collapses and for a moment it seems that his eyes are full of pain and fear - and have returned to their usual blue.
After the fire dies down, Ivypaw rushes into the camp to find her sister, followed by Whitewing, Birchfall, Brambleclaw and Firestar, all searching for their missing kin. Ivypaw is the first to find their scent trail leading up the secret exit - and the first to find their bodies - Squirrelflight in front of her kits, acting as a shield, with Dovepaw in the very middle, and Ashfur collapsed at the edge of the burnt remains of the log that would have lead them to safety.
Firestar quickly figures out what may have happened, remembering the tension between Squirrelflight and Ashfur, but he holds out hope that that wasnt the case. Surely Ashfur wouldn't be that cruel, to allow himself and four other cats to burn to death just to punish Squirrelflight? Regardless, he doesn't say a word of it to the other cats, not wanting to add to their grief.
Ashfur is laid alongside Squirrelflight, Lionblaze, Jayfeather and Dovepaw at the vigil, and the usual prayers are said, wishing the five of them swift travels to StarClan. Among the five of them, Ashfur and Squirrelflight are the only ones to travel to StarClan, while the rest are bound to the ThunderClan territory, forced to wander aimlessly.
When the Judge cannot decide where Ashfur should rest for his crimes, a jury of StarClan cats is assembled, which includes Yellowfang. She argues that Ashfur's only crime was 'loving too much', and the rest of the jury - made of much weaker StarClan cats - all agree instantly, not wanting to risk incurring her wrath. She was correct in a way - Ashfur's greatest crime was not his, but Yellowfang's.
Squirrelflight spends most of her time in StarClan alone, or with partially faded cats, trying to find the Three and Dovepaw. After trying to ask what had happened with Ashfur, and why he was in StarClan, she was met with a strangely hostile response from many of the cats she had looked up to her whole life - Bluestar, Tallstar, and especially Yellowfang, who seems almost prepared to attack Squirrelflight. She quickly realises that something strange is happening in StarClan, but after seeing the haunted looks in other starry warriors, decides the best thing to do is to stay out of it and search for her kits.
After the death of Dovepaw, Ivypw becomes more withdrawn and distant from the Clan. Although she misses her sister, some part of her resents the fact that Dovepaw will forever be remembered as the perfect apprentice, while Ivypaw will never be able to live up to her. Her resentment and grief makes her especially susceptible to the Dark Forest's influence, and due to the lack of outside support she becomes deeply involved in the Dark Forest's training, becoming one of their most loyal warriors. She earns her warrior name - Ivywing, the name Firestar was planning on giving to Dovepaw if she had made it to her warrior ceremony. Firestar meant it as a tribute, an acknowledgement that while Dovepaw was dead, Ivypaw would still carry her in her heart. Ivypaw doesn't see it this way - instead, she sees it as a reminder that she isn't her sister and will never live up to her. She rejects the name and instead chooses Ivyfrost, a tribute to the cat she believes earnt her her warrior name. Firestar accepts, believing the best thing he can do is support this struggling, clearly grieving cat, and tries to ignore the cat the name reminds him of.
Meanwhile, Brambleclaw has stepped down from the position of deputy, finding it too hard to handle while still trying to process the grief of losing his family. Greystripe steps in to take the role 'until a more suitable warrior can fill it', as no other cat is willing to assume the responsiblity of rebuilding the Clan after the fire and the loss of five of their members.
After recovering from the horrors of what had happened, and taking a few days to adjust to their new existence (bound cats are in the exact state they were in when they died, meaning the Three are covered in painful burns (with the exception of Lionblaze, who only had his fur burnt and instead died of smoke inhalation and now finds it hard to breathe)), the Three began searching for answers. They first tried the ThunderClan camp, hoping some cat would be able to see them. When that failed, they began testing the limits of their existence and soon found that if they got too far from ThunderClan territory they began to fade. They remain trapped in the territory, surrounded by cats they care about and unable to speak to them. Leafpool has found herself having weird dreams ever since the deaths of her family - forest burning to ash around her while a distant voice calls her name, and thousands of eyes watch from the flames. It isn't until she sees a familiar figure that she realises - something is incredibly wrong, and Squirrelflight is trying - and failing - to reach her. She goes to the Moonpool, searching for answers, and finds nothing. StarClan is refusing to speak to her, although the other medicine cats are experiencing nothing out of the usual. This silence worries Leafpool, and makes her suspicious. Something is happening, something bad, and she's going to find out what. Ivyfrost isn't surprised to see a scarred, black cat lurking in the shadows of ThunderClan territory - with the Great Battle fast approaching, more and more lesser Dark Forest cats are appearing in the living world, testing their newfound strength. What does surprise her is how shocked the molly is when Ivyfrost talks to her, and how she knows nothing about the battle soon approaching. What shocks her even more is when the cat tells her what happened to her. What shocks her most of all is when the cat asks to speak to Leafpool - her mother. Even with the death of the Three, the Great Battle is steadily approaching. The Dark Forest's strength grows, while the Clans continue unaware and StarClan watches silently. Will the shattered remains of the Three - one dead, cursed to walk among her family and yet remain forever apart, one torn between her devotion to her ancestors and her Clan, and one being drawn further into the depths of the wrong side - be able to save the Clans? Or will the fate the stars laid out claim them all?

We have finally identified one of our mystery animals!  We still don't know what the Large Herbivore is, or what killed the macawk in the grass, but we have a face for the Night Screamer.
Having made an uneasy peace with our fowl neighbours, we resumed poking around cataloging the local flora.  In the process we discovered our second ungulate, a cute little fellow only about thirty centimetres tall at the shoulder.  Like the hookhorns it appears to be some kind of goat, though its horns are very short and rounded, kind of like a giraffe's.  There turned out to be four of them - and a dog.
Yes, these things have their own watchdog. Like the ones that accompanied the hookhorns, they are very similar to the goats in build and colouration.  All five animals were under the cover of low plants and appeared to be sleeping until we discovered them.  That woke them up, and the watchdog took up a defensive position between us and its charges and began to bark and snarl furiously.  Not wanting our toes to be savagely gnawed, we retreated.

Wang wants to call the ungulates Cabruahuas, like a cross between Cabra (goat) and Chihuahua (chihuahua). There's still no sign of any other humans here, so the dogs probably aren't trained... but if they just do this, then why?  They don't seem to be getting anything out of it.
This has been bugging me ever since Kibwana and I first saw the hookhorns, so I did what any sensible person would clearly do. Figuring these must be nocturnal, I sat up in a nearby broccotree half the night to watch what they did - and I still don't believe what I saw.  After dark the cabruahuas came out to start nibbling on low foliage, while the watchdog caught mice and birds that the herbivores disturbed.  Then when the goats settled down to do some cud-chewing, the dog went to two different ones and nursed.

I'm pretty sure the dog is an adult, so why is it drinking milk?  Most adult mammals can't digest milk, humans are actually weird that way.  Fresh milk doesn't seem like a good enough reason for the dogs and the ungulates to stick together like this, so there must be something else going on.  We're just not seeing it yet.
After a short rest the little herd and their companion wandered off further into the woods and I decided to head back.  I didn't want to nod off and fall out of the tree.  I had just touched the ground when the Night Screamer started its yowling, sounding like it was right next to me.
I don't even remember climbing back up the tree.  I clung to the trunk as it got louder and louder, and closer and closer.  I thought I was about to be killed by Bigfoot or something.  Then it emerged from the rhubarb and revealed itself to be this bizarre koala-cat thing, no bigger than the goats, that proceeded to howl like a tortured soul six or seven more times.  It swiveled its huge ears listening to a reply that came from somewhere out across the grassland, and then seemed satisfied and started climbing the tree.  For a moment it was startled to find me there, but I was evidently not threatening, because the little tree gremlin just gave me a contemptuous look and continued on up.

The noise may be a way of establishing territory or something.  I really don't care.  I'm just glad it wasn't big enough to eat me.  This one doesn't need a new name, it's been a Night Screamer since day one, and a Night Screamer it may stay.
