aether

if you’re not a content creator/don’t previously know 5wirl

out of everyone, the rest of 5wirl aren’t surprised that aether has an s/o

honestly the first time you meet them all aether’s already been talking about you for weeks ahead but just didn’t want the guys to scare you off and he didn’t want to introduce you until he was sure you’re the one

and after months of long distance and a bit of traveling with him to film stuff for his channel he’s very confident you’re the one

i think he waits like a solid 5 months before introducing you officially

he introduces you to them by preparing a big meal at the 5wirl house and sitting down for an informal dinner, 100% introduces you to them before introducing you onto his channel as his s/o

it’s a bit intimidating since the rest of 5wirl is protective of aether but as soon as heizou gives his approval everyone fully relaxes

it’s like, they’re obviously polite and friendly because they don’t want to make aether upset or anything but xiao doesn’t make an effort to strike up conversation and heizou is asking just a bit too many questions

venti is just vibing though cause he’s got more confidence in aether’s ability to read people and make the right call, while kazuha is just striking up conversation about your travels with aether

they’re all texting under the table in a gc before heizou makes his verdict and after that xiao starts to make a little bit of an effort to appear nicer and be more friendly

you are definitely given hugs by venti when you leave while xiao gives you a handshake, heizou gives you a pat on the arm and kazuha lets you know you’re welcome anytime, and he also adds you to a gc

venti jokingly shouts at aether to give you a kiss goodbye, and aether just shyly gives you a peck on the cheek before you’re on your way home

and as you’re leaving the house you can definitely hear venti shout out loud “THEY’RE A KEEPER”

for the sake of this let’s say you’re a member of Oce5n and you’re the founder/leader

5wirl and Oce5n are pretty close considering you and aether met before forming said groups and have collaborated a lot

surprises no one that y’all are dating heizou saw that shit coming a mile away

so when you get invited over to the 5wirl house for dinner aether also invites the rest of Oce5n so it becomes a duo interrogation but more lighthearted

really they’re just all teaming up to grill y’all on the details of how y’all got together as and (jokingly) asking you and aether about your ‘intentions’ with one another

at the end of the night venti, xiao, kazuha & heizou gift you a cute little locket with a picture of you & aether as a congratulations for your relationship, it will make you tear up

venti calls dibs on being your flower boy

the rest of 5wirl are (lovingly) surprised that venti is in a relationship he considers serious enough to formally introduce you to them instead of them just walking in on venti with some random person in his room

cause venti definitely does loads of casual relationships cause he’s just chilling, and honestly he thought you were going to be a casual few weeks thing before just staying friends but he does really love you

introduces you a bit after 3 months when you’re no longer in the honeymoon phase and he finds that he still adores you

he’d introduce you to everyone by just casually playing a group game via discord and would first introduce you as a friend and then after a few games/rounds (i imagine y’all are playing the online version of clue or some jackbox games) be like “oh yeah lol that’s my s/o we’ve been dating for like 3 months”

xiao just deadass is like “are you sure venti didn’t just hire you as an actor?”

everyone by that time is definitely more open cause your first interaction isn’t like bogged down by the seriousness of being venti’s really first serious s/o

heizou just making a separate gc and being like “i fucking knew it” he’s the least shocked what a king

aether actually has a normal reaction—

he’s just like “oh congratulations! you should come over sometime so we can meet in person” he’s the sweetest and later on asks for your number over discord to put you in a gc and asks what food you want him to cook

kazuha would be lowkey spacing out love him but venti is a gremlin and made this happen ad like 2 am and kazuha is multi-tasking and editing some stuff in the background so he’s like “wait what just happened” i love this man

but when he’s brought up to speed he’s pretty chill and says you should join them the next time they do a group stream if you’re comfortable with that

the rest of the night is pretty chill y’all play a few more games and you end up calling with venti until you fall asleep

there’s literally no surprise because venti forced the rest of 5wirl to be his wingmen, xiao is just happy y’all are FINALLY together

venti just texts the 5wirl gc like “guess who’s finally on a date” and sends a picture of you & him at a cozy cafe and then just turns off his phone what a lad—

doesn’t even check his texts on his way home so when he opens the door the rest of 5wirl is just there like 🧍🏻 WHAT THE FUCK

xiao just texts you like “how much money did he pay you” but he’s secretly really happy for venti because he knows you and knows you wouldn’t break venti’s heart

kazuha already knew that y’all were going on a date since he helped kokomi plan out a cute date and made sure venti was dressed well when he was going to “hang out with just a friend”

aether is super happy for you both and reaches out to barbara about organizing a little surprise congratulations event like a cute picnic of something we stan aether in this household <3

heizou already knows everything that happened on your date he managed to find out via the picture venti sent where y’all were at and teamed up with yelan to spy

Xiao

the MOST unexpected

xiao managed to not only talk to someone his friends didn’t know but also managed to date them how???

i’m sorry but this man won’t introduce you to 5wirl at all he’s an expert at keeping this a secret they only find out 7 months in when xiao invites you over when he thought everyone was out and heizou overhears someone calling xiao an affectionate nickname and xiao not giving any sign of protest like he does when venti purposefully annoys xiao by calling him his “beloved”

venti never lets xiao live this down, aether helps you hold xiao back from murdering venti and is just like “oh hey i’m aether by the way, how are you?”

kazuha just herds y’all into the living room and is just patiently waiting for xiao to say something

xiao just there like :| so you gotta say something or y’all will be in awkward silence for a long time

the minute you say anything like even just being like “oh hey my name’s [name] i’m xiao’s s/o” venti will just grab you by the shoulders and be like “DID HE KIDNAP YOU” lovingly of course, it’s his job to shit on xiao

eventually everyone will introduce themselves and xiao just grabs your hand and tries to drag you back to your room before aether suggests y’all watch some movies together

xiao volunteers you two to make the popcorn and brings you into the kitchen and lets you know if you just want to go back to his room and chill y’all can totally do that there’s no harm in not wanting to be part of a group interaction at the moment

if you decide to go back to xiao’s room the rest of 5wirl would bring up some snacks and knock on the door before just leaving them outside cause they do feel lowkey bad for overwhelming you

if you decide to make popcorn and join the movie night it’ll be chill, while 5wirl obviously care about xiao they know he’s the least likely to be ‘tricked’ into being in a relationship with someone who isn’t a good person especially considering how long you’ve been together

you’d be sitting in between xiao & aether while venti, heizou and kazuha sit on the floor in front of y’all

it’d be pretty casual, they’d let you choose the first movie and no matter what you choose venti will be like “you’ve got bad taste but you’re with xiao so i guess that checks out” and xiao would just kick him—

if you choose a mystery or horror movie with a mystery aspect like scream heizou will be spoiling all the twists im sorry this man is insufferable (we love him though)

by the time y’all are done watching movies it’s super late and kazuha suggests you stay over since it’s dangerous to go out when it’s super dark & late so aether pulls out some board games and y’all end up staying up all night and playing games with xiao holding your hand under the table and occasionally squeezing it

Uhhhh backlog of art I never posted on here from January, I think? When my art style was a lot different than now, lmao. That first one of Henry was actually my first time drawing him (I believe)! Pretty crazy to me, because holy hell have I fallen deep into this rabbit hole since then. Hyde was also a lot less baby back then, for some reason. The last one is a bit more recent tho, and got used in some stupid reel idea I had.

ALSO, I never shared Hyde in the tub on here (which Sage shared on their insta story, that still makes me tweak out when I think about it) so here's that:

I'm literally blanking rn but basically, her parents used to be thieves and part of a secret evil organization (her mom was raised there from birth and met her dad at the same school), and after they defeated said organization, they settled down (even started the Scarlet Sheep Orphanage) but ofc the leaders of [organization] weren't gonna let them live happily ever after. So they staged a fire that killed Gray. Scar ran back inside after she saw her father die. She lived with a lot of resentment towards the organization and specifically the people who killed her father, but eventually, she was able to take that grief and do everything she could in her power to ensure justice is always served (literally, she's a fashion icon in my head). Hiii, I'm a newbie :') Could you recommend me books and documentaries about Richard and Philip, and that period in general (12th century)? I read somewhere that a new book about their relationship came out recently. Thank you <3

Hi! Thanks for asking. Its funny since I still think of myself as a "newbie" in a lot of ways since I just got into this whole mess of 12th Century England/France drama probably around like last December, so there are definitely lots of people who know more (ppl, feel free to suggest anything if I haven't mentioned it)

To my knowledge there aren't any specific books or sources that are just about their interactions (aside from That One Recent Fiction book that is. Well that's it's OWN thing lmao) but since the family affairs of the Angevin-Plantagenets and the French kings were very closely entwined with the rest of the family and various other parties, there's lots of overlap.

I personally love it because on one hand it's Free Soap Opera Entertainment, and on the other, a look at a time and environment that is very fascinating and extremely different than the time we live in now. Here I've listed the different books and video I've gotten around to, my thoughts on them, as well as some of my thoughts on uhhhh historical RPF shipping in general:

Books:

The Plantagenets by Dan Jones - An overview of the dynasty overall. A good general read, and available as audiobook! Should be available in most libraries. I haven't finished it since I've only read up to the reign of Henry III, but it presents the overall timeline in an entertaining and straightforward way, with a lot of general context and room for showing the colorful personalities of these Messy Bitches

Henry the Young King by Matthew Strickland - this is probably my FAVORITE of the books I've read so far! Sadly out of print, but it's available to borrow on The Internet Archive, and copies can be found pretty easily on eBay :) It focuses on Henry II's original heir, the titular Henry the Young King, eldest of his son who was co-crowned with him, rebelled against him, fought against Richard in Aquitaine, and died early. It goes into a study of his person and role in the politics of the day, how kingship and war were viewed in the 12th century and a lot about the weird lord/vassal relationship between the French and English Kings that made up the bulk of the conflict and drama. Very long and comprehensive, but very readable. I came away with a much better understanding of everything from this book especially.

Richard the Lionheart: King and Knight by Jean Flori. Flori has a very entertaining writing style that somehow is very funny to me when he's talking about the interpersonal dramas, especially with Philip during and after the crusades. The first half is a biography, the latter half of the book is devoted to exploring the concept of chivalry and how it developed, and also exploring subjects of Richard's legend and image

He has many amusing but overall respectful beefs with fellow historian John Gillingham's scholarship throughout, especially in regards to the much debated subject of his sexuality.

Richard I by John Gillingham - haven't finished this one yet but enjoying what I've read so far. Gil is more detailed in some aspects, which is pretty fun. Apparently he has a reputation (from Flori) for being a bit too much of a Richard fanboy which I haven't come across yet but he is informative, including accounts from Muslim historians during the Third crusade.

I haven't read as much specific media/biographies about Philip and the Capetians, and thus all my media is very Plantagenet-biased. there is an educational graphic novel in French that looks interesting but I don't have access to it (and also I don't speak French but. Ah well). For my purposes however since the role of Louis Vii and Philip II are very entwined with the story of the Angevins we do get a pretty decent look into people's personalities, decisions and behaviors, and how they viewed loyalty and kingship in a lot of the books above.

"Britain's Bloodiest Dynasty" timeline documentary centering about King Henry and his drama with Becket and his sons and hosted by Dan Jones (who also wrote The Plantagenets, which I listed in the books section) It's a pretty fun and understandable intro, even if the overly dramatic faux Game of Thrones reenactment is really corny and also hard to see because the lighting is SO dim. It's a little oversimplified and focuses a bit too much on analyzing Henry's Personality as the source of his Issues rather than maybe looking at a wider picture, but it's fun and very beginner friendly.

Confessions de l'histoire - french web series in a reality show "confessional" style about historical figures, there's a video on the 2nd crusade (focuses on Eleanor of Aquitaine and Louis VII's relationship), and one on the 3rd crusade (with Richard and Philip) It's very comedic focused but from what I've watched includes a LOT of detail. It scratches my itch for that goofy edutainment but good quality.

Secrets de Histoire - Alienor d'Aquitaine - this one is also french only but documentary focusing on Eleanor's life . It also has very goofy Reenactors in it with one of the worst wigs I've ever seen, as well as reusing footage from the earlier documentary and other movies loool

"The Place of Battle in the Context of Civil War c. 1100-1217" Lecture by Matthew Strickland about how people viewed (or avoided) Battles specifically in the context of civil wars and dynastic contexts. - I love watching lectures by the authors of books ive read, and this one is both very watchable and provides some great context!

On Shipping

My approach to my yaoi delusions (both in general fiction and in perceptions of historical people) is mostly that i am less concerned about "was XYZ queer FOR REAL," since while I do find serious discussions of historical queer history etc very interesting, a lot of this is more separately blasting my problematic sicko radioactive beam of perception in any direction lol. I like seeing characters who are tied up in a web of context (especially familial/dynastic context) and I love knowing familial-cultural background since it gives me a lot of fun material to work with for characterization. Learning more details the better for me, since a lot of the reality is stranger and more fortuitous than fiction , and thats what makes the characters unique, having so many angles to them. But also in the end, it really is all a delusion informed by my very 21st century fujo inventor taste, and I like keeping that in mind, as a sort of separate category from being informative haha. I could write about my headcanons and how I make things interact with the fictional portrayals, as well as thoughts on eh various problematicisms. But this has gone on long enough. Those are posts for another day...That being said I'm weak for both serious drama behavior and really silly drama behavior and the way people come across in these books especially lend itself well to both .

Hope this was somewhat helpful! I enjoyed reading a lot of this a lot, it's a fascinating subject, thanks for giving me a chance to ramble about it.

May: wow, this really was my first public piece of Papa Louie art, huh. i was so proud of it when i showed it off on tumblr the first time... i don't like it as much anymore. for one, the office wall color is wrong.... i still can't believe Papa Louie was what got me out of art block, but god, i'm glad it did. i don't think i've drawn this much before, and even though the community's tiny, i'm glad to give back as much as i can. anyways, i said something like "it's so funny that people think they're either super married or divorced as hell" on the same post. i still think that, and it's defos funny as hell, but i've grown a kind of appreciation towards the ship as well. like yeah, you go girls, we love that extra slow burn with so many road bumps on the way! October: (breaths in) ...this is the month i finally gave into the JoGotcha wantings. LOOK. ever since someone put the idea into my brain i couldn't get enough of it, and like,, nobody draws the ship anymore so i had to take matters into my own hands. this is the first ship i'm this obsessed with. i usually leave ship stuff to other people but this time that wasn't enough and i... i had to do SOMETHING, y'know? Cringetober? who's that? haha;; i stopped feeling like doing the whole list after less than a week. impressive.

November: oh look, Plushy Power League. Quinn didn't win, but i do like the thing i drew as propaganda, so whateves. the first Papa Louie character i ever drew (minus Chuck and Taylor)... did i change how i draw her? uhh. maybe? i'm not too sure. [link]

also look! the keychain drawing... i need to talk about my Gods and Monsters au again at some point. actually, since i last uploaded the image of my keychain, i revised it tons... it's kinda different now, and i defos think it looks better. this is actually the time i finally fixed the stupid display setting thing that was really messing up my coloring! December: ...oops! tablet broke. and i got my 3ds back so i just didn't draw that much even after exams were over. didn't stop me from drawing though, and in fact i think i made something pretty neat with my christmas art.... even if it did come one day late. [link]

wow. that's a whole year of stuff... and that's defos a lot! i think i'm really happy with what i drew this year.... i don't know what was in my water the last few years but my art highlights felt really.... miserable? for some reason. i mean, yeah, i didn't do a lot of what i had planned (GOE ANIMATIC IM SORRY) but i can see that i've done just as much with my hands anyways, so like, who cares? plus, i always have next year... that's coming in 3 hours, oh god- so, maybe i won't be too hard on myself for not fulfilling my goals... like, i kinda glossed over it, but i did sell my designs for money, and that's like, really impressive! so many people around me buy and sell their art stuff already, so i guess i didn't really register it as something to be proud of... but doing that shit (making, and marketing) is hard!! so like, it's a wow moment for me!

anyways, i'm tired, i only came back home a few hours ago, and i need to get up again for church in a few hours.... mrphgdjd. lets stop being sentimental, and i'll see you people next year. that's a long way off! hope you don't miss me.

w[h]ip wednesday what im alive?

hiiiii. i got dumped and i am very sad and writing is not happening good. but i have like 17k of prosecutor sibs fic on the way that will be done, very soon, i think. here's some of that.

uhhhh miles and franziska in forced quarantine because miles faked sick and it worked but uh oh! franziska's actually sick! hijinks abound. not actually they mostly just annoy each other. here you go i love you.

Somehow, hours later, they are playing scrabble.

It’s past sundown, and Franziska is stubbornly still awake—though Miles can see the pull of sleep fighting her, bags hung heavy beneath her watery gaze. As the day drags she’s beginning to look more and more like a flower mid-wilt, but she is Franziska, and so Miles is forced to sit there and observe while she needlessly forces herself to stay upright, intent to prove a point to any forces that may be watching. Were it anyone else, he might have a speech prepared—about how prolonging rest will only prolong the illness too, about how he promises he won’t tell if she lays down, shuts her eyes for just a little bit.

The clack of her slamming down another tile snaps Miles back to his senses, and he holds the urge to scream behind his teeth where it lives.

Truly, Miles never foresaw himself having to work out the needlessly complex logistics of something like this. Scrabble, he thought, was simple—you spell. Whoever spells better wins. And Franziska, in that regard, would be a worthy opponent—she was a child prodigy, after all, some days Miles wondered if she was born with a law book in her hand.

She clearly did not agree with him, though. Franziska had demanded, right off the bat, that they play in German—as Miles would have an unfair advantage if they played in English. It was obvious in the angry pink heat of her cheeks that she was not expecting him to flip the script on her, because he retorted that she would have the unfair advantage were they to play in German.

So… they are playing in Denglish.

It’s going about as well as one might expect.

Miles stares down at the board, squinting at the mess of letters Franziska has seemingly thrown down at random. Zurückverfolgt, it says, and it has, somehow, cleared out her entire tray, netting her an additional fifty points on top of the—thirty-six?!—she’s already just pulled. When he raises his stunned gaze from the tiles, Franziska looks about as smug as he’d expect her to, arms crossed as she leans back in victory.

“That’s not a real word.”

“It is.”

Miles had the errant thought, as they were settling down to do this, that he should’ve flagged the elder von Karma down and asked him to fetch one or ten German-English dictionaries from the manor’s sprawling library. There was a military-grade walkie-talkie resting on the bedside table, it would only be a single button press, a short request—yet still, Miles cannot find the energy to do even that.

Outside, with the sun having set, the chill creeps in through the aging windowpanes, beneath the outdated architecture of the manor. Franziska is wearing her comforter like a massive, regal cape, one that would make her look like a ruler of all she surveys were it not for the incessant shivering and sniffling. Miles, too, grows cold as the whirling flurries outside crawl beneath his skin, and it gets harder and harder to ignore that it is still December.

“It shouldn’t be,” Miles says. “This language is a pillar of the decay of society.”

“You are a pillar of foolishness,” Franziska retorts, “not to mention a sore loser.”

Miles takes a deep breath, trying so desperately not to envision the shape of his love for his sister as it grows smaller and smaller there in his chest. Perhaps that metaphor isn’t particularly fair—of course he still loves her, he just doesn’t have the patience for this right now. Interacting with anyone in the heart of winter is a chore, and that’s for mere minutes at a time. Being locked in a room for this long with someone as trying as Franziska, it would drive anyone insane.

And there is simply… no reprieve. Because they’re in quarantine, Miles has been commanded by the house’s patriarch to stay exactly where he is. He’s not permitted to even stick his head out the door to breathe anything else besides the same recycled air, feeling thinner and thinner by the minute with the amount of disease it must be carrying. The door might as well be nailed shut.

Franziska is gloating. Miles is staring at her, watching her lips move, but the overhead light is buzzing, it drowns out the noise of all else. That same buzz seems to itch in the space where muscle meets bone, Miles feels it like hundreds of tiny stormclouds beneath his skin. Steeling himself, he keeps his eyes on the floor, away from the walls as the space between them gets smaller and smaller and smaller.

He can’t breathe.

It’s an otherwise unremarkable thing, just a bit of a squeeze in his chest that the air refuses to flow around properly. There’s a sense of coldness in his fingers, like he’s reached out the window and grabbed a handful of snow off the tree, tingling and hard to ignore. Experimentally, he balls a fist, relaxes. He does that a few times, trying to will the blood to warm his digits the way it’s supposed to.

“—and acknowledge me when I speak to you, Miles!”

Miles hears her riding crop whirr past his ear before he feels it hit his hand. A hiss through his teeth is what follows, like his body can’t even find the energy to yelp proper. Any attempt to jerk away from Franziska is lost entirely in the way she gives chase—if he backs up, she’ll easily follow. This close, he feels the fever radiating off her like a space heater, made even more stuffy and suffocating by the way her angry words puff his hair into his face.

The room shrinks, still. Franziska doesn’t seem to notice.

Hall of Dexter fame which is so fucking funny to me. i fell off of Dexter after season 3 and had no idea what the dude was up to til now lmao

More // Low this one's been on intermittent repeat since the vocalist Mimi Parker passed away of cancer last year. i had an aunt who was kinda like a second mother to me, was about her age, and passed away of cancer, so i feel for everyone who loved Low, and this song kinda reminds me of her. i also consider this album to be noise (among other genres) and while i love harsh noise i also think this song shows off the breadth of the genre--here the distortion is used to carry a lovely wistful melody

Things That Scare Me // Neko Case another one from my discover playlist. i thiiiink the lyrics are about how conservative values in America lead to gun violence? but as usual i'm enamored with the guitar and banjo picking--i may or may not be on the verge of a big neko case phase we'll see. i feel like i'm gonna take up some kind of music-making hobby after i graduate and knowing me it's either gonna be a noise project or the banjo. duality of woman or whatever

this movie was, like, I don't wanna say an integral part of my childhood, but it was significant (it was one of my mother's favorite movies, too)

I will say that this movie did eventually lead to me reading through all the wikipedia pages for the last generation of the Romanov family ahkjsdhsjdhskjhdsjs which tbh was a very interesting read I do recommend

at first I was a bit iffy on roles because I feel like c!wil can also fit charismatic conman, but ultimately I felt like the entire story could fit together more if wil was anastasia and sbi was the rest of the royal family (rip sbi </3) (except techno tho he survives)

uhhhh so anyway dteam would probably be a little group of criminals/conmen because, y'know, struggling to survive in the world etc etc.

dream and sapnap used to work at the palace, and george was actually some noble kid who was at the party when the attack happened (sapnap saved/kidnapped george, and dream helped get wilbur to safety like dimitri did for anastasia in the movie :3)

techno isn't wilbur's brother, but he was really good friends with Phil and also had some high standing or smth, and he was trying to escape with wilbur bc he couldn't get to anyone else in time, but oh noooo they get separated, wilbur falls and hits his head and gets amnesia, and you know the rest.

(also: niki knew wilbur when they were younger—idk how yet—but she also survived and is with techno. they're doing their best to find wilbur).

anyway 10/10 movie I do recommend everyone should go see it

i really dont think the dark worlds are escapism for susie - or at least if they are, it would contradict how susie acts in them. disregarding that theyre definitely not an escapist fantasy (berdly is ignored at every turn and doesnt have his smart-boy theme park, noelle is forced to face memories of dess that the world ignores in favor of pretending she never existed, literally everything w kris and spamton neo) susie actively goes AGAINST the hierarchy of the dark world system. she wants to be friends with the darkners and repeatedly points out how weird it is that theyre supposed to serve lightners, even mentioning spamton when ralsei tries to ignore it. and why would a person like SUSIE have a fantasy of an entire world of people totally subservient to her?

You're correct in the assertion that Dark Worlds are not a one-to-one escapist fantasy, yes! But that doesn't mean it cannot serve as escapism for the Lightner characters who visit it. There is a reason that every single Lightner who has visited a Dark World so far likes it there and/or wants to go back.

For Berdly, sure he does get ignored by Queen a lot of the time, and is unable to make his Gamer's Paradise. HOWEVER, he learns how to better connect to his peers, gets to come clean about how much keeping up the appearance of "smartness" weighs on him, and it's clear he's have a lot of fun being a cool knight in glow-in-the-dark-armor. He agrees with Noelle and Susie's initial plan to form another Dark Fountain.

For Noelle, yes, being in the Dark World brings up memories of Dess. But these memories aren't a bad thing, she's not disturbed by them. In fact, she's excited to be having an adventure, she's excited to be discovering new things about this new world! Her recalling how she and Dess and Asriel and Kris used to have adventures together too is more reminiscent and nostalgic, appreciative of getting the opportunity to have adventures like that again, and not indicative of someone who is being triggered by the situation at hand.

For Kris... Kris is a more complicated case, because we oftentimes cannot see how they feel about a given situation. We do, though, have their two options in response to Susie saying the Darkners should come to their world, with "Yeah let's do it" being more enthusiastic and proactive then "Seems a little far-fetched". Also, I think it's safe to say they want to go back, for one reason or another. Because fucking uhhhh:

For Susie, in my original post I already gave examples of how much she favors the Dark World, how important it is to her, and how much she likes it there. Here, I'd like to define the term of escapism itself. Wikipedia describes escapism as a "mental diversion from unpleasant or boring aspects of daily life, typically through activities involving imagination or entertainment". It is important to note that in order for escapism to function, the "world" where you're escaping to does NOT need to be utopian. As someone who struggles with escapism myself, a lot of the media I use as an escape does have its own conflicts, flaws, angst, etc. The Dark World has it's issues too, but that doesn't mean it cannot provide an escape for those visiting it. There can be certain aspects of the Dark World that make Susie or the other characters uncomfortable, but as long as it is a better alternative to the "real" world, it can still be an escape.

So, here and within my previous post, I've begun to make a case that Susie displays signs of escapism. However, that still begs the question: Why is Susie susceptible to escapism, particularly within the Dark World?

From certain context clues, we can infer that Susie's home life is... Not great. In the start of chapter 1, she's afraid she's going to get expelled from the school, for something as menial as eating chalk. She says a bush is "basically [her] house now" because she took a nap in it. She drinks milk from an alleyway, completely unaware of where it's coming from. She doesn't call her parents when Toriel asks her to, and she can have impromptu sleepovers whenever she wants without telling them, meaning they're fine with her disappearing for an entire night (if they're still in contact with her at all). She sees herself as (metaphorically and physically) a monster, a bad person, someone who can never be a hero, someone who no one would want to be friends with:

I think it's safe to say that Susie, when we meet her at the beginning of Chapter 1, is unhappy. She's ostracized from her peers. She has little to no support network. She thinks all of her classmates are waiting for and want her to be expelled entirely. Given the position she is in, it's clear why she would want to find an escape. Thanks to the Dark World, she's able to connect to Kris and Noelle and even Berdly, she meets Ralsei and Lancer, she "becomes" a hero. After spending probably most of her life believing she's a bad person, in the Dark World she gets to be one of the GOOD guys (something she rejects at first because it doesn't align with her view of herself, but she's clearly much more comfortable with the title of hero as the story progresses). She gets to feel good about herself, she gets to feel good about what she's doing! She gets to save the world, she gets to use a cool axe, she gets to start learning healing magic, she gets to have fun with her new friends...

You are right, anon, that a world of people subservient to her would not appeal to Susie. But the wish-fulfillment like nature of the Dark Worlds, the way they give her a chance to a hero, to be liked and appreciated for who she is, and even the way that the Darkners can't tell the Lightners "what to do", DOES. Susie wants to be free from authority, and the Dark Worlds present her with a situation where she can actively go against it, dismantle the system, and come out victorious and unscathed- something she cannot do in her own life. Susie does bring up how strange the whole "Darkner's purpose" thing is. She's clearly uncomfortable with most kinds of authority, and that means she's uncomfortable being the authority too. She does benefit from the way Lightners can pretty much do whatever the hell they want, but above that, she wants her and her Darkner friends to be equals. However...

I think that its somewhat important to note that, while its very prevalent in Chapter 1's narrative, the idea of it being Weird that Lightners are "meant" to serve Darkners takes a back seat in Chapter 2. We still see bits of it, like how we see Queen wanting to make the Lightners happy, but it's rarely ever called to attention in the way it was in Chapter 1: Susie telling Ralsei to quit it with the purpose talk, the Spade King's motivations against the Lightners, and Seam talking about the relationship that Lightners and Darkners used to have. We don't get to see a lot of that discussed in Chapter 2. Ralsei has taken Susie's advice. He's acting less compliant, learning sarcasm from her, and considering who he is outside of his destiny. Outwardly, he's displaying less of that "Darkner's purpose" mentality. Susie seems to be happy with this, and she doesn't bring it up in Chapter 2, because to her, the problem has been "solved", at least somewhat. In fact, almost none of the characters mention this Weirdness in Chapter 2. It is an inconvenient truth that can be pushed to the side.

Where we DO see this idea of the power imbalance between Lightners and Darkners utilized the MOST is within Spamton's subplot. But, for a large portion of that plot, Susie isn't present. Kris goes into the Spamton shop and (initially) the basement alone. Susie knows something is off, she realizes how uncomfortable Kris is, but she doesn't see a lot of what Spamton says about "heaven" and about being free. This is purposeful. Susie so far has been the one who's most directly against the power imbalance. Not allowing her to see more examples of it with Spamton's plot allows her to continue not thinking about it. It allows the imbalance to continue being swept under the rug. In fact, when talking about what was weird about the Spamton battle, Susie doesn't even mention "heaven":

The power imbalance of Darkners and Lightners is weird to her, but it's not a deal-breaker. She still enjoys being in the Dark World. She still has fun there. She still stays up all night thinking about it. And, at the end of the day...

She wants to go back.

In conclusion, I really do think the Dark Worlds provide escapism for Susie. They are not a perfect fantasy, but they don't have to be. As long as they are a better alternative to her life in Hometown, as long as they are giving her an adventure, giving her the friends she thought she could never have, giving her a chance to "be a good person", and a break from the expectations and pressures of her life...

Well. Well well well.

It’s December 14th, 2022.

And, I don’t know if you know this, but today is an important anniversary. What is it, you may ask? Don’t fret - I will tell you.

It’s only the ten year anniversary of the publication of my favorite Arthur/Eames fic of all time! And, having read it several times throughout those ten years, I have a lot of things to say about it. So sit back and relax as I wax poetic on this amazing fucking story. Cheers!

(It should go without saying but, spoilers!)

Emotion. Let’s start there, because it might be the hardest to quantify in any sort of simplistic way. The first third or so of the story, mainly set up until you get to the real MEAT, is just a building lamentation of a relationship so far out on the rocks it’s practically lost at sea. And it hurts, man. Not only because A/E is one of my forever ships and I’ve read so many happy fics of them over the years, but also because it feels real. Not contrived in any way.

And emotions segues nicely into my next point: characterization. Simply, it is on point. Their issues and arguments are very real too, and seem to come from places of genuine hurt, but also deep love. Neither one is right or wrong. That moment when Arthur articulates one of his deeper hurts - that despite his best efforts to be a good partner, Eames still pulled away from him - oof. Almost an actual physical pain in my heart. Fanon!Arthur has always been incredibly relatable to me, and seeing/reading him being so vulnerable? Ouch, but in the best way.

As for the plot, and tropes therein, it’s a real keeper. One of my absolute favorite types of stories, particularly romantic stories, are the ones of relationships repaired, set anew, but not forgetting what came before. I call it ‘relationship kintsugi.’ Kintsugi, if you don’t know, is the art of repairing broken pottery with gold lacquer. The bowl (or cup or plate) is fixed up to work good as new, but the cracks are still visible. And one could argue that the reminder of previous breaks only strengthens the overall shape of the pottery. In the relationship version, it’s the idea that no matter the fracture, there’s always a chance to build it back up. Build it up, but leave the gold lines to remind yourself that you don’t want to go back to the same relationship you had before - you want it to be better (which is pretty much an exact quote from Eames in this story). And of course, setting it at Christmas time and New Year, traditionally a time of togetherness and new beginnings, is just the icing on an already delicious cake.

One more thing I appreciate about the plot is its pacing. No element feels rushed or misplaced. From their initial argument, to their gradually increasing intimacy, to their first post-breakup kiss, to their lovemaking, to the ending. It’s believable at every step of the way. And the slow build up makes the eventual catharsis of the above moments almost explode off the page.

Some other personal favorite moments for me:

When Eames first calls Arthur after getting snowed in. Arthur, still feeling raw and hurt both from their argument/break up and from thinking Eames has been cheating, wonders aloud if Eames doesn’t have ‘somewhere else’ he could stay (obviously thinking about his lover); Eames’ answer is a quietly confused “uhhhh no?”

The initial hashing out of their issues. The entirely necessary purging of razor-sharp emotions that leaves both in a heap on the floor, especially Arthur.

“There was never anyone else - it was always you, Arthur.” And any other time Eames makes it crystal clear that no matter what, he wants no one else.

The exchange of meaningful gifts, that leads to two very important kisses.

The tiniest of tiny details, like Eames’ love of peach yogurt. Now, whenever I see that flavor, I think of this story.

The small moments that lead them to sharing a bed again at last (though at that point, only for literal sleeping together).

“Can I take you to bed, my love?”

The ending. I’m spoiling a lot of this fic, but I’m not spoiling that. Tremendous.

I think I might have said all I needed to say. Or all I could say. Articulating feelings is hard for me sometimes. And when the feels are particularly strong, doubly so. Hence why I hardly ever leave comments on fics - it’s not that I didn’t love the fic, it’s just that I have no earthly idea what to say. So if the ending to this little essay feels at all abrupt, now you know why. Put simply, I adore this story. It’s everything I could ever want in a romance - established relationship (but one that feels new thanks to being rebuilt), realistic emotions, characters being expanded upon far far more than anything in their canon universe, a slow burn that never lingers too long, and of course, a highly cathartic happy ending.

It’s as perfect as fanfiction can get, and it’s my unequivocal and inimitable favorite Inception story of all time. I can’t believe it’s ten years old today. If you haven’t already, please give it a read.

(side note: I hope I haven’t thoroughly embarrassed the author by being a tad overzealous in my love for this fic! If so, I apologize; ten years is a long time for me to build up appreciation for your skill, my friend.)

Fic: H is for Handies

H is for Handies, by Amuly. 20k words, NC-17, Pete/Lucius OFMD

At just before dusk was when the light was magical for sketching. Or, so said Lucius. Pete sat with his head against Lucius’ shoulder, watching the sun set over the ocean. He wasn’t sure what all this magic lighting was that Lucius was talking about, but it sure was pretty. Didn’t understand how all the colors translated to making good sketching subjects, especially when Lucius was sketching in black and white, but Lucius was the artist. Lucius’ shoulder moved beneath Pete’s head as he worked, sketching but also writing too. Labeling, looked like: sketching the dish Roach had made tonight, and writing stuff with lines pointing to various items on the page.

“Whatchya doing?” Pete asked. He was careful not to nudge Lucius, since he didn’t want to mess up his work.

Without interrupting the scratch scratch scratch of his quill, Lucius replied: “Writing down the meal Roach cooked for us tonight.”

“I could tell that,” Pete pointed out.

“It’s the recipe,” Lucius explained. He moved his shoulder gently under Pete’s cheek. “You liked it so much, I figure I’d try and remember it, for future reference.”

Pete thought about that for a second. It never occurred to him to write down things he needed to remember, mostly because he couldn’t read or write. He just repeated things in his head until he remembered them (or forgot them). Sometimes he came up with little rhymes or tricks to remember really important stuff. Like, Lucius’ birthday was December thirtieth, which Pete remembered because it was one day short of New Year’s Eve, because with Lucius you needed a whole extra day to celebrate. Or, red sky at night, sailor’s delight, red sky in morning, sailor take warning, which was about storms coming in from the east. Or, for the directions, North East South West, he remembered because it was Never Eat Sour Watermelon. Which was kind of funny because he kind of liked sour watermelon, but anyway, it helped him remember his directions.

But Lucius: Lucius could just write it all down. He didn’t have to keep it all in his head. Of course, he had to keep all those letters and words in his head, so he could read them, but apparently that was easier than keeping everything else in his head. Less stuff to remember, somehow?

“Pete?”

Pete blinked out of his reverie. Lucius hadn’t stopped scribbling, but his attention was split now. Pete shook his head.

“Thanks. That’s nice.”

“Something on your mind?”

“Just, writing.” When Lucius hummed but said nothing, Pete figured he was waiting for him to say more. So he tried to articulate himself better, like Lucius was always encouraging him to: “How handy it is. Like, for remembering stuff.”

“You thinking about learning?” Lucius said, real casual-like.

And Pete knew he was being casual because he didn’t want to hurt Pete’s feelings. Make Pete feel inadequate, or stupid, just because he couldn’t read. Most the guys on the ship couldn’t read—hell, Pete was pretty sure Blackbeard couldn’t read. Didn’t need to: too busy being a total badass.

But, maybe it’d be nice, sometime.

And it was something to do with Lucius. A project they could work on together.

“Maybe…” Pete drawled. He nudged his shoulder into Lucius’. “But only if I get to bang the teacher. I kinda got a crush on him.”

Lucius beamed, turning away from his scribbling at last.

“You really want to learn? Or is this just like a roleplaying thing; like, you wanna sneak off somewhere and I tell you what a naughty schoolboy you are, and punish you for your sloppy lettering?”

“Why’s my lettering going to be sloppy?!” Pete complained. “Maybe I’m your star student and you want to reward me properly.”

Lucius snorted. “Uhhhh sure, babe. You’re number one in the class. …out of one.”

“Anyway, maybe I really want to learn?” Pete scratched his eyebrow. “I mean, give it a try, at least. If it sucks I can just quit. I got you for reading anything I need, after all.”

Lucius still seemed skeptical, or maybe hesitant. Pete realized he might be asking for something Lucius didn’t want to do at all. Teaching Pete to read was probably going to be tortuous, after all: maybe Lucius would rather not.

“You don’t gotta!” Pete rushed on, once the thought occurred to him. “I mean, it might not be any fun for you. Teaching me letters and junk.”

“No, no! That’s not it at all. I just… it could be hard work. Do you know any letters?”

Pete shook his head. “I mean, I know how to make an ‘X’?”

Lucius sucked at his teeth. Pete winced.

“Hey, no, forget about it. It was a stupid idea, anyway. You’re the reader, I don’t gotta be one, too. That’s just redundant, after all. Inefficient.”

But Lucius smiled at him and leaned in to give him a sweet little peck on his cheek.

“Hush, you silly man. Of course I’ll teach you. If you really want to.”

Pete shrugged. “Hey, if I end up wanting to chuck inkwells at your head, we’ll just quit and fuck off somewhere to bone.”

“Sounds like a win-win.” Lucius tapped his wooden finger against his lips, legs crossed and kicking as he thought. “You know, that gives me an idea on how to make this fun.”

Pete wiggled a little in excitement. Well, that had to bode well for his reading lessons.
