Stopped at a rural gas station with my partner to use the restroom and saw two young girls (like 8-9?) standing outside the single stall men's and women's restrooms.
Me: You guys waiting in line?
Them: Our mom's in there we're just waiting for her.
Oh ok, cool. *sees the men's room door is open* I'll just use this one, then *goes inside and shuts the door*
Folks, the GASP from these two young girls as I went in there was SO FUNNY through the door. I tried so hard not to cackle inside.
Them: WAIT that's the BOYS ONLY ONE?? Was that a boy?? No it was a girl! But could be a boy? Why would they go in there?? *mom comes out* MOM there's a GIRL in the boy's only one!
Mom: Oh? Alright then.
They leave, I come out again and meet my partner at the register who btw has a gorgeous mane of brown and silver curly hair that reaches halfway down his back. I'm a stocky, fairly androgynous, short haired person in flannel.
The girls get in line behind us with their mom and their snacks.
Them: SEE I told you it was a girl! I think.... *sees the back of my partner and its just HAIR* She... or him? Or...uhhh....?
Anyways, we left the gas station, I'm telling my partner the story as we reach the car. We thought it was too funny.
Then we drove to a waterfall and had a good day.

i try to stay out of discourse these days but i do have some thoughts on BES lately. incoming, wasian cis woman opinion on mizu's gender and the idea of "mizu is actually canonically a trans man or nb"
up front, i'm not going to tell people to stop using certain pronouns for a fictional character. people are going to do what they want and playing with gender is a popular way to show love for a character or show. that said, with regards to ~canon~, i do believe the straightforward answer is the intended one, that mizu is intended to be a woman, because frankly if they intended the character to be trans or nb, BES would've been a lot clearer about it because BES is not a very subtle show—"a woman has a fixed number of paths."
mizu not being a woman would also mean that akemi is the only main female character in a show that is partly about women's subjugation and limitations in 17th century japan. and imo it would be uhhh weird and concerning at best to call a man or nb character a woman in the episode and show descriptions. (necessary disclaimer that these are westerners writing a story for westerners about women's rights in japan's 17th century, and we--or most of us, including me--are using modern western language to discuss it for lack of other vocabulary.)
i do frankly just like seeing fiction with women warriors. i admit mizu being a butch or androgynous woman slots in nicely with my wants so i have no desire to really question it, because i want to see more butch women as protagonists, and i'd like to reach a place where we don't challenge if someone is REALLY a woman because they dress or act like a man. yes, i do understand mizu is fictional. but hopefully you understand my point.
we can argue about who "needs" the representation more, gnc women or trans or nb folk, but i don't think it would be a productive use of time to argue a specific version of mizu would be "more/most progressive." an explicitly wasian woman in a leading show is already very exciting to me (the only other one i can think of at the moment is miraculous ladybug, which premiered ten years ago and has a very different target audience to say the least). i would welcome a wasian trans main character, and i would also certainly welcome trans or nb wasian discussion or interpretation on mizu specifically. i'm not going to say nobody other than wasians or wasian women can see themselves in mizu, but i think it's a fair thing to be put off by the folks who are, like. saying that "she/her" to describe mizu is misgendering.
so tldr i won't call he/him-ing and they/them-ing mizu wrong, because a fictional character doesn't exist to be offended by that, but i do expect the same courtesy and openness when folks want to talk about mizu's womanhood. because that is a critical theme of the show's core: that her ability to live openly as a woman has been denied to her.

I'm the anon who asked all the curious questions about sexuality and gender!
First off, just to answer your question about what it might mean to be "a guy in a girl way" - So this can obviously mean a lot of things for a lot of different people, and if I were to get into the nitty gritty we could be here all day :P
But actually I was trying to express my situation in "cishet" language. So I'm agender. I'm afab. I use he/him and I am most comfortable with being thought of and referred to as if I was a guy.
But for all intents and purposes people are going to assume that I'm a woman if they don't know otherwise. I'm androgynous sure, but I'm petite to a fault, and never transitioned physically in any way, so to most people who meet me casually, they will assume that I'm a slightly androgynous and gnc woman.
I am polyamorous, and one of my partners is a mostly cishet dude. I know that he most likely wouldn't be (sexually) into me if I was a cis guy. But then again, I am not a cis guy. And I don't question his love or attraction, or respect for my gender. But I do insist that him being with me makes him at least "a little bit bisexual".
It's obviously very complicated, and like. I really respect that you sat down and learned about the community and the terminology etc despite how it might not be a huge part of your life. That's very valuable, and in and of itself, it's a very refreshing and healing thing.
I think the value of allyship is too often understated. Up to and including by the notion that if you are a true ally, you must be some kind of queer in denial.
That said, I do think that to be a true ally (and I think you are in this process!) it's necessary to acknowledge (as you do) that the categories and labels are all just approximations. This includes "cis het". It's ok to have these moments of confusion and just take them for what they are, because at the end of the day human experience is messy and complicated. It doesn't have to threaten your identity as such, because the identity is just the label you currently feel comfy with.
So for example if we met and you didn't know me well (as a co-worker or whatever), you might find me attractive thinking I was a cute lady. If you then asked me out and I knew you were cishet I would probably gently explain that I'm not your type/it wouldn't work for me.
If you met me knowing beforehand that I'm a dude who looks a bit weird, you might not feel the same attraction because your brain has put me in the box of "dudes".
But then if you got to know me and we became close or something, you might start to feel attraction based on liking me as a person and me looking the way I do. And then you might feel bad for it, because you would feel that this attraction means you don't respect my gender or something.
Obviously we are likely not going to meet so that's a completely hypothetical example, but in the latter scenario I would actually take your attention way more seriously. And I think so should you (if a similar situation ever arose).
Because attraction based on knowing a person intimately transcends gender and at that point I wouldn't care so much that you wouldn't be physically attracted if I was a cis guy. I'd be like, well he knows me and I know him, we like each other, and if we get to add freaky sex to the mixture it's a win-win.
Because misgendering is more about dehumanizing. The need to reduce me to my physical body. Somehow?

Every time I see people suggesting a m/m ships has a chance of being canon in DCMK I'm just, uhhh... gobsmacked? Because Gosho is THE most het writer, to the point that even his most tomboy female character can't be "too" boyish. He toned her androgynous look and vibe down immediately after he revealed she's a girl, and that's what pissed me off back when. I think I made a post about it, even.
The series is THE example of "you have to build off or ignore the canon if you want anything queer from it, because you won't be getting anything legit from the author."
Maybe that's cruel to say, but I think it's crueler to let someone believe a lie, and think they have a chance.
Are some of the things he does/that are in the movies queerbait, then? I'd actually say yes. Because it'd be put there specifically to be bait, only to only ever fall back on the same m/f ships he's been writing from the start.

fire spirit painty post after a billion years
Ah, fire spirits! It's been so long!
At this point, I'd like to make a couple changes, particularly to the design. Before, their limbs/bodies were disconnected, also their torso were supposed to look like their materials which they burned which??? if it was made of it sure but... what were you doing, Swordy? Anyways.
I made their limbs more connected, just to keep the design easier to draw. Also, I removed material torsos. Now, their limbs (and maybe their body?) is made of the material they burned as pyrae (wood, gasoline, fabric?, etc.) . Also, since Energy Flames' limbs are made of pure energy (IIRC), they can manipulate them into different shapes or make multiple limbs, stuff like that.
I also gave them something akin to clothes. They probably don't have to wear this, but I thought it'd be more character-designy and also I scrapped the material torso design, so. might as well. I suppose it could look a bit fiery, with triangles, and stuff. Capes, probably. Maybe summertime-esque clothes to go with the fire stuff.
Some things that have probably stayed the same: The bigger/more powerful a flame is, the higher up the color-hotness scale it goes (red - yellow - white - blue). Also, the way Fire Spirits look depends on what they were fed as pyrae. There's wick flames (smallest and reddest), campfire flames, bonfires, wildfires (biggest, though probably yellow instead of white) , and energy flames (strange size ig lol). This also correlates to a sort of hierarchy among Fire Spirits, bigger ones being more respected.
I'm not sure how I had this, but here, Fire Spirits are going to have different sizes, though proportionally be mostly similar (changing slightly).
About their worldbuilding... I'm not going back and reading anything past here, just. worldbuilding them I guess. I suppose I'll probably have changed a few parts.
Fire spirits are incorporeal beings born of flames, as the title suggests. As opposed to corporeal, such as objects or humans. This means they're made of conscious energy, without (or with little) matter. I'd imagine Shimmers are also incorporeal, instead bonded to light (or something akin to that).
As children, called pyrae (s. pyra), they must feed on fuel to survive and make it to adulthood. They'd probably be disliked somewhat due to this. Also, they could probably feed off the concious energy of sapient creatures like some kind of vampire. (In recent memory, a Shimmer was consumed this way. Coincidentally, the Shimmers have a strong dislike of fire spirits.)
Fire spirits have a regard for those that raised you or whatever. Family. Even though they don't quite have that like we do. Also, I imagine they have a go-getter, competitive, survival of the fittest mentality. You do have to consume a lot to grow into a nice big flame.
I don't see why they would have gender, but I feel like they wouldn't particularly care about gendered pronouns (most of them, at least), and probably wouldn't even have any in their languages (as in, pronouns which belong to a gender class that correlates with a natural gender. they might have grammatically gendered but not naturally gendered pronouns.). They'd probably look feminine, masculine or androgynous to us, probably just because they're humanoid.
Again, Fire Spirits have a hierarchy depending on what kind of flame they are. Bigger and brighter flames on top, with energy flames at the top of the hierarchy. These terms are somewhat vague and there's probably going to be outliers which lay in between, and they describe size more than fuel type.
WICK FLAMES - The smallest of them all. Vermillion, perhaps? Not full red, but not orange either. They're not very strong. Also, they don't live very long compared to other fire spirits (Uhhh... Maybe 30 to 50 years...? Or shorter, or longer, I'm not sure.), which is dependent on how much fuel you had as a pyra.
CAMPFIRES - A fairly sized flame. Red-orange. Probably the most common of them all. Maybe a lifespan of 70 to 120 years? Again, not very sure.
BONFIRES - Slightly bigger than Campfires, but not by much. Yellow-orange. Accordingly less common. 150 - 200 years maybe.
WILDFIRES - Born of massive flames. Quite large. Yellow. Rare. 350 to 500 years, maybe?
ENERGY FLAMES - The rarest of them all. Unlike the pattern of all the others, they don't tend to be larger than wildfires. Their limbs are made of pure energy, rather than the dark limbs akin to burned materials of other flames. Extremely rare, tend to be really old. Live millenia, maybe even millions of years.
