Getting nostalgic thinking about my babystay days 🥲 I literally remember where I was sitting and how my computer was positioned when I first sat down and listened to Back Door for the first time (I think that was my first skz song). And fool that I was, my reaction was "meh" 😭

(For context, I've always been a lyrics person with music and Back Door is admittedly not that deep, but I've since come to appreciate that not all songs have to be deep and sometimes what we need is a song that's just there for the vibes and that is perfectly acceptable and serves its purpose and there are some GREAT songs in that category!)

I've obviously since changed my mind about Back Door, but I started liking skz for them (which is every marketer's dream) because I somehow stumbled across them amidst BTS Pinterest and thought they were funny crackheads (one of the things I also loved BTS for).

But I'm also remembering how later that summer (2021) I heard TOP in an anime openings compilation that my brother begged me to put on and—not knowing it was skz—I just stopped and went "wait wait hold up this is GOOD" and then "by Stray Kids" came onscreen and I was like "huh that's funny, but surely it's some jpop band with the same name" and then "3racha" came on in the credits with their respective names and I flipped my freaking gourd as my Southern dad would say

So suffice to say, I can prove decidedly that I would also like their music if I didn't give a flying flip about the boys lol. But I do and it's lowkey a problem but I also lowkey don't care and my fandom Pied Piper-ness has been successful in the past, so it will in fact not be stopping cuz we still constructing keep it coming HAH WHY U MAD BRAH

It doesn't feel like that long ago and it feels weird that I'm more "veteran" than like half the Stays in existence now aghhhh but their growth never really hit me because to me, each win just felt like a natural course of events. Like, "yeah, of course this should blow up, it's awesome and we know it's awesome!" And it's not like them getting bigger has changed them either. All that's changed is a growing obsession with grabbing each other's butts imo 🤣 That, and the natural course of maturing a little around the edges as you get older.

Which, in the end, is what makes me STAY and always will. The heart and mind of each Stray Kid is fascinating to me and I can't properly describe how much I love how they process the world around them. If you need any further proof, watch the Maxident album intro segment about what love means to them, because if you see what I saw, you'll see eight men with a better understanding of the concept than many people far older than them, each with their own slant on it.

Where did this essay come from, I was only posting about those first two babystay moments— Rather than rambling further, because I want to do other things with my life today, I'm just gonna say, if you're reading this, Chris, I'm glad. I hope this little segment of my "Stay Story" makes your day a little brighter! You guys inspire me more than you know in more ways than you know, but rather than letting that pressure you, I hope it lets you know that you're doing well.

And if any newer/almost Stays are reading this, I hope this was a fun story and makes you want to get to know them even better!

Because I don't have any better ideas on when to shut up, I'm gonna put on my Chan hat beanie for a second and end this with a biiiiig hug 🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂

Favorite Albums of 2023

So Much (For) Stardust by Fall Out Boy

Favorite Songs: Love From the Other Side, Heartbreak Feels So Good, Hold Me Like a Grudge, Fake Out, So Good Right Now, What a Time to Be Alive, So Much (For) Stardust

It must have been because they were on hiatus for so long, but as soon I heard the lead single, I fell instantly in love and enjoyed this album so thoroughly that it made rediscover just how much I loved Fall Out Boy. The lyrics are always fun and deep, plus the sounds are just vibes. The cherry on top was getting to seem them live for the first time. I don't know how I've gone almost 20 years without seeing one of my favorite bands, but it was so worth it.

2. Quarter Life Crisis by Baby Queen

Favorite Songs: We Can Be Anything, Dream Girl, i can't get my shit together, Love Killer, Quarter Life Crisis, 23, u suck!

This album just recently came out, but its so good. Ever since I discovered Baby Queen (Thank you Heartstopper), I just fall in love with all of her stuff and while I'm almost 10 years older than her, I find a lot of her music still relatable. Plus the fact she is so openly queer is so refreshing.

3. The Maybe Man by AJR

Favorite Songs: Maybe Man, Touchy Feel Fool, Yes I'm a Mess, Inertia, The DJ is Crying for Help, I Won't, 2085

Again, this just came out recently, but its another great album by AJR. I love that as they keep growing, so does their music and a lot of this feels like them really dealing with their emotions both with just the aspect of growing up, but also with their dad dying recently. I love that they tackle these kind of topics in their music with their awesome sound and can't wait to see where they keep going.

4. Nosebleeds by MisterWives

Favorite Songs: Out of Your Mind, Nosebleeds, Sideways, Too Late, Trip Around Sun, Flower Moon, Broken Glass, Ultraviolet

I'll admit, because of how much I adored Superbloom, I knew the next album was going be hard to live up to. And while it wasn't as meaningful to me, it's still a solidly great album. The switch to more rock sound is a really awesome move and Mandy's voice is suited for it. But I also loved that it still retained that beautiful introspective voice which why I loved them. I was out of town when they came so I'm dying them live again, but this was a nice tie me over.

5. Pretty Vicious by The Struts

Favorite Songs: Too Good At Raising Hell, Pretty Vicious, Hands On Me, Do What You Want, Rockstar, Remember the Name, Better Love

Loved getting new music from them since they haven't released anything since 2020 and I love that they continue to be the band I turn to for modern rock sound. They embody so much of the genre sound from like the 70s/80s, but in a modern twist which is what makes them great. When they announced this album at their concert and did Pretty Vicious live, I knew I was in for a good time.

6. Dream Machine by Des Rocs

Favorite Songs: Dream Machine, I Am the Lightning, Nowhere Kid, Never Ending Moment, In the Night

Speaking of good honest rock music, Des Rocs continues to impress me. And I'm so sad because I've missed him the last three times he's been on tour in the past two years because I know he's an incredible performer too. But this switch back to being independent really is good for him because these are just incredible sounds that make you want to hop in the car, drive nowhere and cruise to these.

7. BEN by Macklemore

Favorite Songs: No Bad Days (feat. Collet), MANIAC ( feat. Windser), LOST/SUN COMES UP (feat. Jackson Lee Morgan), Faithful (Feat. NLE Choppa), Sorry (feat. Livingston), Tail Lights (feat. Morray)

I was surprised by how much I loved this album. I'm not living the life that he has and yet, I relate to his feelings on how the vices of society are harmful to us and we should be questioning and exploring what else we can do about it. I also loved just how many fantastic collaborators he has on this album and truthfully, the biggest pick me up to make feel better is playing No Bad Days, which I also love that he got his daughter involved on for the music video.

8. The Other One by Babymetal

Favorite Songs: Metal Kingdom, MAYA, Time Wave, METALIZM, Monochrome, Light and Darkness

This may not be my favorite album of theirs, but its always exciting to get new music from Babymetal. Especially because for a little bit it wasn't clear what the future had in store from them, but I love the Su and Moa are still loving this band and making it awesome. Plus now they got Momo to bring them back to a trio! It's fun. And that's what I love the most about them, and I love about the album because its so fun to just blast.

9. A R I Z O N A

Favorite Songs: Graveyard, Dark Skies, Pressure, Die For A Night, Moving On, Meet You There

I really appreciated getting new music from these guys again. I love their upbeat electronic vibe, but I loved the way they also told stories of heartbreak, trial and error, and stress on this album. It's such a good way to just feel a vibe and know it may not okay right now, but we're going to keep going. They also sound so good live and that's how I found them so it was cool to see them again, bigger than before, and with such good new music.

10. I've Loved You For So Long by The Aces

Favorite Songs: I've Loved You For So Long, Always Get This Way, Not the Same, Suburban Blues, Attention, Younger

Another good album by these lovely and talented ladies. With their previous album making the statement for their queerness, I love that not only do they lean into it hear, but its still just a good sound. They're still amazing live too and you can tell they are more comfortable singing these songs because of how much more truthful that they are. It's fun. As they keep growing, I'll keep enjoying their sound because they're fantastic.

When I get downtime I love creative and intellectual type hobbies, such as creative writing and reading (both fiction and non fiction.) I also play the viola. Unfortunately, due to health problems I can't participate in many sports (I like to watch though!!!!) with the expection of swimming.

I tend to be a pretty perceptive person, both internally and externally, which keeps me out of a lot of trouble/away from people with "bad vibes." I'm pretty outgoing for the most part, but when I get to know someone and really trust them, I calm down a bit because I don't feel like I constantly have to be entertaining and charming to keep them around. Maybe I qualify as "chaotic"? But that's probably just my adhd speaking.

TIP: I have to say, I absolutely adore your work. I've seen it on and off, but what really got me hooked was your recent thriller interactive series. It's incredibly well written, and that extra interaction with the audience? It's incredibly wonderful to see that level of communication with an author and reader. when i saw this i freaked out,,,,,,, first of all, your asks never fail to bring a smile to my face (even if i respond late, which seems to be my default) , and second, giving people playlists is a love language™ and to have some tailored for our group????? brb, i have to go cry in a corner (and add all of these songs to a spotify playlist sTAT).

this is too sweet!!!!! and okay! here are some thoughts i have - vague ones that are kind of vibes only.

also, disclaimer that i'm pretty musically illiterate. my music knowledge stops at like,,,, 2015. if even that.

so pitts and meeks give me big hozier vibes. idk why exactly, but i feel like they'd both jam out to hozier. (the fact that you included hozier on our respective playlists shows me i'm right, lol.)

then! i've only listened to a little bit of conan gray, but his vibes really remind me of todd, and just a little bit of lindsay? like, lindsay could get into one or two songs of his if she were yearning at the moment, and todd can just,,,,, always get down to it. todd is people watching, convince me otherwise.

and okay, we all know clara is my 5sos mutual, but i truly do get good girls vibes from her and charlie's relationship. (there's even a line about her speaking french, asdfghjjhgfd)

and perhaps this is because i feel like your my taylor swift mutual, but i also get big taylor swift vibes from you and meeks. but like, indie pop or country taylor. i haven't listened to all of evermore, but those are the vibes.

and as for noe and chris, i feel like a song that fits with them could be i want to be with you by chloe moriondo. i don't actually know anything about the artist, but this song came up on my spotify, and it does scream them.

and lol, i only know like 3 songs by ricky montgomery, but i get those vibes for neil.

(also, i just get big ordinary days vibes from lindsay and neil, and i'm honestly not sure what it is exactly - is it the song beautiful, and the whole "for beautiful to happen, the beautiful has got to be seen" message? idk, but the association is there.)
