Cerebrum - Board Update

Now that I’ve quit my job working at a laboratory I can now, hilariously, get back to my storyboard on... mice in a laboratory. Feels so good to work on my project again and actually have energy for it. (Trust me, I really liked the job, which was basically animal husbandry and caring for lab animals, but the way corporate and management ran things was ATROCIOUS. Most stressful position I’ve ever had. Not just that department either, but the entire medical facility. So many overworked, underpaid, frustrated people there. It was horrible.) I’m now working part-time for a friend doing animation. All my years of saying I’d never animate as a job has come back to bite me in the butt.

Thank you, by the way, for all of your kind tags/comments on the last piece I uploaded. I read them all and they’re much appreciated. Sorry I haven’t responded to each of you individually. It’s not for lack of caring, but because I’m very... hesitant to interact much online or with friends. I honestly don’t know how to reintegrate myself into community at this point in time other than just... posting what I love. I’m scared. I’m sorry.

Below is what I’ve been working on since leaving my last position -- thirteen board pages of “Cerebrum”. The first nine were already done beforehand. Trigger warning for animal testing, needles, near-drowning, and a character in peril. Yes, I’m still very much into the macabre. Nothing has changed there.

This story is partially based on old lab practices, partially steeped in fiction, and partially referring to actual laboratory practices (still) done today.

Old Practices: - catching mice in the wild; very outdated - forced swim test; technically still used (?), but might be getting phased out

Fiction: - cage structure and placement; may have been more accurate years ago - grabbing a mouse around the middle and the last two holding techniques

Current Practices: - grabbing a mouse by the tail; yes, this is done, but you grab it near the middle or base so as to not cause the animal any harm - shots/injections - ear tagging - scruffing (doesn’t hurt them at all)

Some will complain about animal torture. Let me tell you something: Those animals were treated incredibly well, considering the situation they were in. The air they breath and the water they drink is cleaner than ours. Everything is kept as spotless as possible. There are tight regulations about how suited up you are according to what rooms you are in, how you handle the animals, and making sure all of the little cute fuzzes (and the livestock) have adequate food, water, and soft bedding. The pigs are given toys to play with and nice music to listen to (the pigs seemed legit happy; not a care in the world; they were kinda spoiled, actually), the birds are given a huge cage to fly around in, the rodents and ferrets are given enrichment, and the staff genuinely cares about their animals. No animal is allowed to suffer beyond what is necessary (meaning, what the test requires, and this is under regulation and must be permitted; if there is no other way to avoid pain for a test, it must be approved before being enacted; you can read about this online). As soon as an animal looks to be under the weather, it is reported and the veterinary staff quickly determines whether to administer healing medication or have the animal humanely euthanized. I am saying all of this to dispel any concern that anyone may have about what is conducted behind closed doors. It is unfortunate that animals are still being tested, but I understand why, as do the people conducting said tests. Nobody likes doing it. The folks there legit care about their animals. It was very comforting to see. Also, despite the fact that corporate sucked, the work itself was a mix between very standard and very interesting.

And, yes, there were white mice and they were the friendliest models.

The Magical Flying Husband and I went out to County Health and got our onboard personal antivirus programs updated. I warned the nice lady with the needle that while I am not afraid or at all psychologically stressed by getting a vaccine, the body always starts crying. She said "Oh, well...if you're good, you get a piece of candy. If you cry, you get two pieces."

Because we'd come together, she had both of us come up at once. Ten years I've been with him, or nine years and nine months, a decade's worth of vaccines and tests, and this is the first time he's seen me get a needle in my arm! Truly, you learn so much more about a person once you marry them.

I love the nurses at my GP. Warning for mention of blood and needles ahead.

It was time again for the quarterly blood tests and the last time it was a hassle to draw blood because the spot they use had been used over and over again for the last 35 years, as well as for the IVs I get.

I told the nurse who would draw blood today, one of my faves there, and she was like : What the hell? We never had any issue? What did they do?

And joked about using one of those temporary tattoo pens to mark the spot every damn nurse uses every time despite me showing the whole vein and marking the spot as off-limits. She just started laughing, slowly tested the spot, went about a third inch higher, and smiled.

"See, soft as molten butter, and flows like fine wine."

It was really no hassle, no pain, done so fast I could barely blink.

I should really mark the spot as off-limits. It's maybe half an inch long along the vein, and the vein is feelable and nice to nurses about 1 1/2 inch above and below that area. I don't get why they always hit the same small spot.

Because I can get my blood drawn no problem, but a shot gets me hyperventilating.

Got a concussion now time for repercussions

Setting: The Baxter House(Immediately following his return home from the hospital)

Brief Summary: Clu has just gotten home from helping Kendall and Larkin knows.

Possible Triggers: needles,sickness,cuts,bruises,abuse

Clu had no time to rest when he arrived home thanks to Carson picking him up and they had decided that her and Clarke would pick up his car later on. “Where were you? And where’s the Tate girl?” Larkin’s voice boomed as soon as Clu’s foot stepped in the doorway of their house. Which made the teen flinch causing his body to burn due to the multiple bruises. “I—I don—don’t know.” This reply would anger Larkin more and make him march the teen down to the basement. “You do know and you clearly disobeyed me again, Clu Davies.” The phone ringing interrupted Larkin it was Carey and now their father knew where the teen was at. “So you ran to Carey. Poor baby got a concussion and ran to his brother. You must really like Kendall considering you broke the rules.” Clu chewed on his lip. “Daddy—“ he started but his head was already pounding and he knew he didn’t have any fight in him. “I’m sorry.” Larkin pushed the teen down on the table strapping him down harshly and Clu winced as they tighten against his bruises. “Not yet but you will be.” Larkin said as he grabbed a needle and pushed it into his sons vein. Clu was out for multiple days things constantly happening to him that he wouldn’t know until his father allowed him to wake up. Bruises on top of bruises, fresh cuts all over his body and when he was allowed to sit up he got sick. Most of it was his usual now and one of the first thoughts was if Kendall was ok. “Think that girl will like you now, Clu Davies?” Larkin asked looking at his son before grabbing his arm and twisting it until he heard it pop. “Don’t you dare run to Carey or her.” He said letting Clu leave the basement using his elbow to hold his arm until he collapsed on the floor.

Hubby is a TV addict.

Seriously

As soon as he gets up or we come home from appointments, the TV goes on immediately. He has the remote, so I never see anything that interests me. The only time it is turned off is when he goes to bed.

He also has an aversion to needles. But he STILL watches shows that show these.

And has the balls to sit and whine that he is sick of seeing them 'every few seconds'

There's a variety of solutions to that

Turn tv off

Switch channels

Not sit and watch said show

He has the remote. So he can DO that, but chooses to sit and whine.

Typical

Me? If something bores me, I'll find something more interesting or tv goes off.

Simple as that.
