#turning val kilmer into creatures

if you’re still looking for creatures to turn ice into. think about a rabbit. he has a little hutch with blocks to chew on. carrots in a garden patch. fluffy bunny feet and big ol ears. beady little eyes and twitchy nose. *thump thump* as he hops away
What about a HARE. A god of the wind with eyes that have seen into hell itself and did not flinch.

AND a little hutch with blocks to chew on and the occasional carrot for treats. He and Maverick are doing magical detective work and it was Maverick's idea to infiltrate the 4H club with his "pet rabbit." Neither of them know a damn thing about Leporidae.

Happy Birthday actor Tommy Flanagan who turns 58 today.
Flanagan was born in Eaterhouse, Glasgow on July 3rd 1965, the former painter and decorator got into acting after a stint DJ'ing and a violent episode which left him with his distinctive scars, he was randomly attacked outside a Glasgow bar, slashed horribly and robbed.
His friend Robert Carlyle then persuaded him to join him with his theatre company, Raindog Theatre, but it was not an overnight success for either of them as Flannagan admitted in an interview neither of them ha “a pot to piss in” he remembers “touring the Highlands in this old blue Transit van, but it had a broken window. It was so freezing inside, one of us had to hold a piece of cardboard up to stop the wind coming in.”
Two years later, he, and almost every other actor in Scotland, appeared in Braveheart. But Flanagan stood out. Mel Gibson told him to come to America. A year later, the Scot did, but the journey west was more about being with his then wife Rachel, an American film producer. Rachel, was from San Diego and he followed her home.
Of course Tommy had appeared in a couple of things beforehand, the obligatory Taggart being the standout, but it was after the William Wallace romp that he got noticed, Rab C Nesbit, A Mugs Game and The Saint followed that, of The Saint, he confirms something I assumed for a few years "Val Kilmer is a prick”.
Tommy got roles in Face Off , The Game and Plunkett & Macleane before the excellent Ratcatcher, set in 1970’s Glasgow and written and directed by fellow Glaswegian Lynne Ramsay, Flanagan plays the main part’s Da, George Gillespie, if you haven’t seen it do so, it’s a great film. One person who agrees with me about Ratcatcher is actress Drew Barrymore, who had seen Tommy in the film and called him up and offered him a part, of the film Tommy admits “You get to have your ass kicked by Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu and Drew Barrymore. What’s bad about that?” Who gave you the best ass-kicking? “That’d be Lucy.”
Among Tommy’s other films are Trauma, Smoking Aces and Sin City, he was making a steady living in Hollywood but it wasn’t until the part of Filip ‘Chibs’ Telford in Sons of Anarchy in 2008 that people started recognising him for his acting, rather than the glesga guy in the films with scar, he is also an occasional face in the spin off Mayans MC.
The series was an international hit. But Flanagan had mixed feelings about the role. His character was called Chibs, for a start. Flanagan didn’t miss the irony; he’d gone to Hollywood to forget the worst memories of Glasgow life and was playing the sort of creature who’d attacked him.
Flanagan admits to previously playing up to the hard man characters he portrays, but his wild days have been behind him since meeting Dina his second wife, they have been married for 12 years now and they have a daughter together.
Tommy has recently appeared in the TV series’, Westworld and Wu Assassins which are on Sky Atlantic and Netflix respectively. We also seen him in the movie There Are No Saints, teaming up with SOA co-star Ron Perlman and fellow Scot Brian Cox, I wasn’t impressed with the film, but if you like action and gore you might want to give it a go.
I have been more impressed with Tommy in the latest instalments of the Power Book series, where protagonist Tommy Egan heads for Chicago and pits his wits against Walter Flynn, played by Flanagan. The series can be viewed as a stand alone, or you can go back and watch the beginnings in Power, which ran from 2014 to 2020.
Tommy will be back with season two of the gangster saga which is premiering on September 1st. Tommy has two movie projects set for next year, Road Movie Casey and Mary and Sleeping Dogs.

tag game to better know you
Ty @new-anon for tagging me! What else to do on a cold Monday morning public holiday then fill out a questionnaire about myself 🤔
What book are you currently reading?
The Wright Brothers by David McCullough Definitely has nothing to do with the fact that we can see this book on Ice's shelf next to the photo of him and Mav shaking hands after rescuing the USS Layton...
What’s your favourite movie you saw in theatres this year?
I have only seen the new Spiderman (literally 2 days ago) so I guess that! I think it was pretty good, but tbh I liked the first one more.
What do you usually wear?
Pokemon or bird themed t-shirt paired with shorts or my high school gym trackies if it's cold. I have one green overcoat that I wear pretty much any time I need a jacket, it is very versatile in what weather it can be worn in.
How tall are you?
170cm, that's 5 foot 6 inches to those USAmericans in the audience (had to google that...)
What’s your star sign? Do you share a birthday with a celebrity or a historical event?
I don't know any celebrities off the top of my head that I share a birthday with, and the only historical event I connect immediately with my birthday is a bad one lmao. Though it happened in the 1920s, so mostly only relevant when I was studying history in high school...
Do you go by your name or a nickname?
Serie! Fun fact, I made this name up on the spot randomly when playing Facebook games as an 11 year old and the RPG ones wanted me to input a name. I have been stuck with it ever since.
Did you grow up to become what you wanted to be when you were a child?
My current job didn't even exist when I was a child, so, no!
Are you in a relationship? If not, who is your crush if you have one?
No relationship, and I have not had a crush since high school pff
What’s something you’re good at vs. something you’re bad at?
Good at procrastinating, bad at resisting the lure of more wips 🙏 this makes for a wild combination haha
Dogs or cats?
Probably cats, but I am allergic to cats and dogs (and most fluffy creatures) so I don't have any pets :(
If you draw/write, or create in any way, what’s your favourite picture/favourite line/favourite etc. from something you created this year?
Probably my favourite things that I've posted this year was Dawn and well. haha. (nuts) because they were both very self-indulgent in a way that I always enjoy writing with codywan, though for very very different reasons.
What’s something you’d like to create content for?
I want to write more Aloy femslash!! I've written so much for her, but none really with the characters from the new game, and now with a canon femslash kiss under her belt, I think she deserves to be a wlw icon. Next year for femslash February I'm thinking of trying to organise a Horizon event to get some momentum not just for me but for others to create too
What’s something you’re currently obsessed with?
Val Kilmer's jaw.........
What’s something you were excited about that turned out to be disappointing this year?
I can maybe half say the Horizon: Forbidden West DLC - I liked the overarching plot well enough, and they gave Aloy a lesbian kiss so I'm not too mad, but it carried over almost all of the issues from production that the base game had, which I was keen to see fixed in the DLC. That and the lack of backstory for Seyka or the Quen, the lack of side quests and the lack of interesting stuff to do in the wilds of the DLC made it a bit of a mediocre experience for me (though after HFW I wasn't expecting anything too good anyway).
What’s a hidden talent of yours?
Not sure if it's hidden, but I'm particularly good at spotting double spaces in a document. Pisses me off (it's my editor brain going haywire... my team is always making fun of me for this at work lmao)
Are you religious?
Nope!
What’s something you wish to have at this moment?
Someone to make me breakfast </3 alas after I post this I will simply have to do it myself
Tags?
@elwenyere @tragediegh @playablekairi @cillyscribbles if you like! No pressure ofc

The Ghost and the Darkness (1996)
Tumblr media
How far true stories have fallen.  Nowadays, all we can get is some limp-dick “Inspired by True Events” followed by absolute nonsense.  With The Ghost and the Darkness, we get full-on voiceover from a character assuring us that this is 100% actual factual truth, hand on the Bible cross my heart and hope to die, stick a needle in my eye.  Now there’s ballsiness.  Do I believe it for an instant?  Of course not.  For one thing, I can only assume the real John Henry Patterson had a better Irish accent and less gleamingly white teeth.  So too does the film amp up the quasi-supernatural bent to the Tsavo Man-Eaters.  These cats are clever as hell, absolute psychopaths in their drive to kill and devour.  It never quite manages to be as terrifying as it would hope to be, and there are a few moments of unintentional comedy as the mayhem breaks out.  But still, there is thrill to be found in the increasingly desperate squad of hunters thwarted at every angle by these unknowable creatures.  It’s tantalizing how little can be nailed down about them.  Maasai hunters refuse to acknowledge the pair of lions as even lions, viewing them as demons whose thirst for blood will never be slaked.  Charles Remington experiences his own version of this fear and apprehension upon discovering the lions’ lair, shocked and baffled at the collection of skeletons so clashing with his experience with the animals.  This mystery, never fully elucidated, makes for the most engaging aspect of the film.
Not that the movie doesn’t try to dissuade the viewer from enjoying it at points.  A sweeping James Horner-esque score oppresses the experience at every turn, blasting outtakes from The Rocketeer or something every time any character bats an eye.  Equally bonkers is Michael Douglas’ turn as seasoned hunter Charles Remington.  While Val Kilmer is content to turn in a stiff performance, Douglas evidently decided that a cross between Colonel Sanders and Jack Nicholson was on order.  Remington appears and disappears something of an enigma, late to the show to arrive and dragged off by a lion offscreen at the end of it all.  While he served as both predator and prey for these Tsavo lions, perhaps he wasn’t so unlike them in that sense, if a fair bit nicer.

Wooooow what is Willow? That trailer gave me Lord of the Rings meets Harry Potter in space vibes
Willow is one of the greatest 80s fantasy films. Its about a guy named Willow (Warwick Davis) who is a Nelwyn (kind of like hobbits meets dwarves?) who aspires to be a sorcerer. He finds a baby on the river who turns out to be the prophesized one who will bring down the evil queen who rules the land. Its now his job to bring her to safety! And of course he's joined by a bunch of mainstay fantasy characters: the swordsman (Val Kilmer in his BEST role I won't argue), the knowledgeable sorcerer (who's been turned into a possum), the comic relief (in the form of two brownies).
Also has fun creature design, an enemies to lovers romance, fun action sequences, baby closeups, and all the 80s cheese you can shake a stick at. I definitely give it a rec if fantasy is your thing. Especially BEFORE the new show!

destiel -> 🦇
"Cas," Dean says slowly, eying the scene in front of him warily. "What the hell is that?"
Cas smiles, turning towards him. The light of the kitchen's bare bulb glints off his dark hair, shines in his blue eyes - hell, he's beautiful, but it's not like Dean's ever going to tell him that. 'Course, that's not important right now, not when Dean's too busy looking at what's perched on Cas's finger.
"It's a bat," Cas says happily, holding it out to Dean (Dean not-so-subtly backs away). "She must have flown in by accident the other night. I've named her Stellaluna, like the charming children's book Jack likes."
"Yeah, that's great, man." Dean swallows, pondering his methods of escape. "Hey, you seen Sammy around?"
"I believe they are in the library." Cas tilts his head to the side, eyebrows drawing together. "Dean, are you...afraid? Of the bat?"
"No," Dean answers sullenly. "No, I'm not."
"I don't understand," Cas says, running a gentle finger down a pleased-looking Stellaluna's spine. "You've fought demons, vampires, all sorts of creatures. Not to mention, you admire the fictional superhero portrayed popularly by Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale, Ben Affleck, and Robert Pattinson. A harmless fruit bat scares you?"
"They're just - " Dean breaks off frustratedly. "They're freaky, man."
"Hm." Cas steps forward.
"Cas."
Another step.
"Cas, I'm warning you - "
One more step, and Dean's running for the hills. He loves Cas - in more ways than one - but he's not taking his chances with any bat, fruit or no.
Send me a ship + an emoji and I'll write a ficlet for it!

A frenzied Neo-Romantic
love Oliver Stone. He’s gonzo, gung-ho, and gangsta. He breaks the rules. He spits fire. He writes from his viscera. The movies he wrote for other directors — Midnight Express, Conan the Barbarian, Scarface — go over the top and just keep going. I forgive the silly posturing about capitalism in Wall Street because it’s entertaining. Stone and Val Kilmer nailed Sixties mysticism-turned-self-destructive-excess in The Doors, he and Woody Harrelson created a chilling study of murderous American minds in Natural Born Killers, and he and Tom Cruise got close to the heart of how the moral compromises and lies of Vietnam crushed our spirit in Born on the Fourth of July. And JFK may be the most insane picture ever released by a major studio. [...]
Still, the shivery shamanism of Stone’s memoir, Chasing The Light: Writing, Directing, and Surviving Platoon, Midnight Express, Scarface, Salvador, and the Movie Game, has me loving Stone all over again. Reading his fantastically bonkers book, I came to a critical realization about Stone: He has no sense of humor whatsoever. This is not the same as being serious; he’s deeply unserious a lot of the time. But he is committed. There is no ironic distance or detachment from anything, ever, and here he and I differ rather dramatically again. Still, I am awed by this raw self-portrait in hypercharged fervor.
A frenzied neo-Romantic, Stone feels everything, ever since he fell apart emotionally when his parents broke up while he was at boarding school, and later, in a sort of soul coma, volunteered for the nerve-exploding chaos of infantry life in Vietnam. He survived a dizzying firefight (on January 1, 1968) that he describes in a woozily detailed account of absolute confusion. He never fired a shot nor saw an enemy combatant in that battle, yet there were bodies everywhere when the sun came up, and he helped bury and burn enemy corpses. When he got home, he immediately wound up in a San Diego jail, facing five to 20 years on drug-smuggling charges after bringing back two ounces of weed from Mexico. (A lawyer got the charges dismissed.) Back on the sidewalks of Manhattan, “I was coiled and tight, a jungle creature, ready for anything, living 24/7 on the edge of my nerves.” Except that he would dive for cover whenever a car backfired. He started writing screenplays as a therapeutic way to face his demons.
In his cinema, he takes a rusty hunting knife and flays our national nerves, trying to get us to feel something like what he feels. How can you not admire a mad pagan Hollywood barbarian who deals with career setback like this:
"One shining, bright cold winter day I bought a cooked lamb and, in a bizarre homage to Odysseus . . . laid out its severed parts on my lawn, offering it with fire, incense, and prayer to the gods to wipe clean whatever I had done to offend them. I begged forgiveness, especially of Pallas Athena, the goddess of wisdom. It was a strange and solitary ceremony, witnessed only by my two ravenous dogs. I meant every word I chose judiciously, my heart so earnest to end this self-inflicted pain I was feeling as a frustrated writer, dramatist, whatever I was. When I finished, I allowed the dogs to devour the offering. After all, what did the Greeks go with all those fine oxen and sheep that were sacrificed on Homer’s pyres?"
Immediately after this ceremony, which happened during a period when Stone was “heartbroken by Scarface and its Hollywood reception” (things certainly turned around for that picture, which grew to be acclaimed as a signature movie of the era), the Greco-Hollywood gods answered by hiring Stone to write another movie: Year of the Dragon. This launched a series of events that made Stone an Oscar-winning director. Tastes caught up to Oliver Stone; America was ready to be kicked in the crotch and punched in the neck. The Eighties and Oliver Stone were made for each other. But I’ll come to that in my next essay.
-Kyle Smith, "My Love-Hate Relationship with Oliver Stone," National Review, March 7 2021 [x]

revelations | a 13x14 coda
read here on AO3
They move their camp in the middle of the night. The tunnels are the easiest way to move, so they file through those with everything they can carry. Bobby and a few of the other men set about putting up new wardings and scouting new lookout posts, while the few that remain start to set up the camp, with Mary and Jack’s help. Jack’s good at entertaining the kids, so he ends up getting the sleeping areas ready with them while Mary and the soldiers set up a makeshift mess hall and an area for the soldiers to convene if necessary. Jack and Mary have an open invitation to stay, with the stipulation that Jack help protect their camp, should it come to that. Jack doesn’t seem to have a problem with it, so Mary accepts the offer and settles into the camp.
The nightmares haven't stopped. She doesn’t dream of burning anymore. Small comforts. She still dreams of the demon deal and sometimes of her heaven, which is often worse than her nightmares. Tonight’s no different. She startles awake, blinking away the image of yellow eyes and John lying dead in her arms.. Carefully, she extricates herself from her makeshift bed and makes her way out of the camp as quietly as possible. She pulls her jacket tighter around herself and makes her way to the top of the nearby hill, stopping short when she finds Jack already sitting there. He turns, though, when he hears the rustle of her clothes. A gentle smile spreads across his face and he motions for her to sit. She takes a seat next to him with a soft sigh.
“Couldn’t sleep either?” Jack smiles gently, glancing at her.
“I don’t sleep much. I offered to take the first two watch swifts so they could all get some sleep.” Mary smiles, but it’s small and bitter.
“That was nice of you.” Jack hums, lifting his shoulders briefly and turning to look back out across the land in front of them.
“It’s what Sam and Dean would do. Castiel too, probably, though I didn’t get to spend much time with him.” Mary nods absentmindedly, frowning after a moment and turning to look at Jack.
“Castiel? I… he died.” Jack smiles, a soft one that barely tips the corners of his mouth up.
“Yeah. I brought him back. I think. It’s… complicated. I think it was Dean.” Mary raises her eyebrows, sitting up.
“Dean?” Jack nods, his eyes scanning the area in front of them before focusing on her.
“He was… he didn’t like me. He felt that I was responsible for Castiel’s death. He was… distraught. He and Sam fought over it a lot. It was… Dean’s very scary when he’s angry. He’s scarier when he’s sad, though.” She watches him for a moment, her fingers toying with the zipper of her jacket. She thinks she knows where this is going, but she’s not sure Jack does.
“Why is it complicated?” Jack lifts his shoulders again, turning back to the land in front of them.
“My powers brought him back, yes, but… it wasn’t me. Not entirely. I acted sort of like… a phone? I guess that’s the best way to explain it. Dean was so distraught over Castiel’s death that I was able to find him in the angel afterlife and wake him up.” Mary noods her understanding, and silence falls over them. It’s more comfortable than it had been the previous day, but Mary’s mind is whirring too fast to focus on that.
She isn’t entirely surprised. She’d have to be blind to not see it, though that might not even help. Someone could probably tell just by hearing Dean and Castiel talk to each other. It’s not just the fact that Castiel is a man, she’s aware that it’s not as taboo as it was in her time, and Dean is still her son. Castiel is an angel , a warrior of God, and it makes her more than a little uneasy that her eldest is in love with a supernatural creature. Though, if she’s being completely honest with herself, Castiel doesn’t seem all that much like an angel. If Dean hadn’t said he was an angel, she would’ve just assumed he was another hunter. A strange one, but a hunter nonetheless.
“Dean’s much happier now. As soon as Castiel came back, he was like a new person.” Jack smiles softly, his hands clasped and resting in his lap. Mary smiles gently, this one more genuine than the last.
“And Sam?” Jack hums, glancing at her.
“He misses you. He was… very upset that you were trapped here.” Jack must notice the sadness on her face, because his hand closes on her shoulder with a gentle squeeze.
“We’ll get home. I promise you, Mary.”
                                       ·     ·     ·     ✤    ·     ·     ·
The gentle knock on his door comes three hours after he storms out of the war room. He’s showered and tucked under his blankets with his flannel pajamas on, his laptop resting on his lap and playing an episode of Doctor Sexy. He knows, without a doubt, who’s on the other side of that door. With a sigh, he taps the space bar and sets his laptop on the nightstand.
“Come in.” As expected, Castiel opens the door, his face terrifyingly neutral.
“Hello, Dean. I… wanted to talk.” He motions Castiel inside, shifting over on the bed to give the angel room to sit. He doesn’t immediately, but a cocked eyebrow from Dean has him shrugging his trench coat and suit jacket and sitting against the headboard next to him. “I wanted to apologize. I should’ve discussed it with you and Sam before. I was just… so angry.” Dean rolls his eyes, nudging Cas’s shoulder with his own.
“I know you were. And you were right. There’s nothing we could’ve done for him, and he was dangerous. It-It was the right thing to do, Cas. It was just a little shocking. I haven’t seen a look like that on your face since… well, since the apocalypse. It was terrifying.” Castiel sighs, his head dropping as he clasps his hands in his lap.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you. I… he hurt you, Dean.” Dean chuckles, crossing his arms over his chest.
“I was fine, man, it just scared me for a second.” Castiel nods, and a silence falls over the room. Silence with Cas is never uncomfortable, hasn’t been for years.
They stay like that for a while, shoulder to shoulder, their breathing the only sound in the room. Castiel moves first, grabbing Dean’s laptop off the nightstand. He clicks out of Netflix, despite Dean’s protests. He grabs a DVD off Dean’s shelf, setting the laptop between them and pressing play on the movie. Val Kilmer’s face lights up his laptop screen, so he smiles and settles in to watch the movie.
He wakes up the next morning to the smell of coffee and his laptop closed and safely on the top of his dresser. He rubs his eyes, blinking against the light coming from the hallway. He sighs, stretching and running a hand through his hair, wrapping his robe around himself as he shuffles to the kitchen. Castiel holds out a mug of coffee, which he takes gratefully and sips at, smiling when he sees the stack of pancakes on the counter.
“I wanted to make amends.” Castiel explains, glancing between him and Sam.
“It’s alright, Cas. I think we were all a little heated yesterday. You were right, there was nothing we could do. And making sure Michael can’t get to our world should be the priority.” Dean nods his agreement, sipping his coffee. Castiel smiles gently, nodding.
“Right, well. We should start looking for the ingredients of the spell. They’ll take some time to collect.” Both Winchesters nod their agreement, and once the plate of pancakes is empty, the three of them make their way to the library, finally on the same page.

Happy Birthday actor Tommy Flanagan who turns 57 today.
Among Tommy’s other films are Trauma, Smoking Aces and Sin City, he was making a steady living in Holywood but it wasn’t until the part of Filip ‘Chibs’ Telford in Sons of Anarchy in 2008 that people started recognising him for his acting, rather than the glesga guy in the films with scar, he is also an occasional face in the spin off  Mayans MC.
Tommy will be back with season two of the gangster saga which is currently in production.

Hyperallergic: Astrological Aesthetics: June 2017 Horoscopes
J.T. Mitchell, “Elizabeth Mary and Augustus William Hillary” (1803), Watercolor on ivory, 9k rose gold, paper, glass, Museum of Fine Arts Houston (via Wikimedia Commons)
Gemini (May 22–June 21)
When it was just “Charging Bull,” we couldn’t have cared less. When it was joined by “Fearless Girl,” we got nominally more interested. And when “Pissing Pug” came along, we were underwhelmed by the addition but intrigued by the looming sculpture pileup. We can’t wait to see what mediocre figurative sculpture gets added to the equation next! Will it be “Clawing Cat”? “Hipster Hippo”? Naked Trump? Sometimes, Gemini, quantity can become quality.
Cancer (June 22–July 22)
It’s finally happened — the computers have taken over. Now that an algorithm has mastered the fine art of naming paint pigments, there’s not much we as a species can do but get really good at fixing robots and hope that our new automaton overlords keep some of us around to do repairs. Luckily for you, Cancer, your astrological forecast says now is a great time to acquire a new technical skill.
Leo (July 23–August 22)
The question of which celebrity would very publicly turn to art-making next has fascinated us since at least April, and we recently found the answer: Val Kilmer. We’ll reserve judgment on the works in his debut solo show, Valholla, until we see them in person, but for now we’ll just say that our expectations are low. There’s a cautionary tale in this for you, Leo: try to focus on doing one thing well this month, rather than splitting your energies between multiple projects and pursuits. You can’t be the top gun in every field.
Virgo (August 23–September 23)
Have you been following the protests and conversations surrounding Dana Schutz’s painting at the Whitney Museum and Sam Durant’s sculpture at the Walker Art Center, Virgo? You’ll have to tackle a major conflict head-on in the first 10 days of the month, so we suggest you study these two recent controversies closely. One is a prime example of evasive non-action, while the other shows a willingness to admit mistakes, talk to critics, and move forward. How will you respond to dissent?
Libra (September 24–October 23)
In Pipilotti Rist’s mesmerizing piece “Ever Is Over All” (1997), the artist struts through the streets of an unspecified European city swinging a giant flower, which she periodically uses to smash the windows of parked cars. It’s delightful video art, but it’s the exact opposite of how you should behave this month, Libra. Avoid calling attention to yourself or causing conflict at all costs.
Scorpio (October 24–November 22)
“Your ego can become an obstacle to your work. If you start believing in your greatness, it is the death of your creativity.” So said, of all people, Marina Abramović, and those are words you must heed this month, Scorpio. You run the risk of getting carried away with overly convoluted or abstract ideas in the coming weeks, but don’t forget to be mindful of more practical problems, too.
Sagittarius (November 23–December 21)
You’re not exactly an introvert, Sagittarius, we all know that, but this month you need to be especially conscientious about communication. Be sure to keep all the people in your life — whether allies or opponents — abreast of your activities and don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it. Some strongly worded artist-designed postcards might be just the right vessel for your thoughts and opinions.
Capricorn (December 22–January 20)
A thick canopy of shells and dirt crackled underfoot. Fantastical plants formed from wires, palms, plastic tubing, computer parts, glowing glass orbs, and prehistoric-looking hunks of coral loomed overhead. Alien masks and surreal creatures lurked in this sci-fi canopy, while fountains sent dark fluids cascading down trunks and branches. The central installation of Korakrit Arunanondchai’s recent exhibition at CLEARING in Brooklyn was an absolutely stunning and masterfully crafted environment. This month, Capricorn, you need to be similarly detail-oriented and controlling in your work.
Aquarius (January 21–February 19)
One of our favorite participatory public art projects remains Lorraine O’Grady’s “Art Is …” (1983), for which she and a group of performers in Harlem’s African-American Day Parade strategically deployed empty, gilded picture frames to affirm that, yes, each person at the parade — that, indeed, the entire event — was also art. There’s a kind of sweet romance to the gesture we find irresistible. The object of your affections will likewise be very susceptible to grand romantic gestures this month, Aquarius.
Pisces (February 20–March 20)
The greatest US artist of the postwar period once said, “Remember to always think twice,” a maxim he immediately and cheekily contradicted by crying out, “Don’t think twice!” Be sure to follow his advice this month, Pisces, as you’ll have a lot to gain in both romance and finance, but your success will depend on always weighing the pros and cons. Failing to do so will saddle you with Billie Jean-caliber problems.
Aries (March 21–April 20)
If you’ve been plotting a major life change or career shift, Aries, now is an astrologically advantageous time. It could be something as simple as trying a new medium or experimenting with a color that isn’t part of your usual palette, or something more ambitious like upgrading galleries or moving studios. And, for the seriously ambitious, a gentle reminder that Italy is looking to offload 103 historical properties.
Taurus (April 21–May 21)
Look, Taurus, we’re not saying you did it, but we have a feeling you know where to find the art from the Gardner Museum heist. You don’t, eh? What if we tell you there’s a $5-million reward? Would that jog you memory? Still nothing? What if the reward were doubled to $10 million? No? OK, well, we promised the FBI we’d put all our psychic powers to the task, but it looks like it was all for naught. In any case, one way or another, all your secrets will come out into the open this month.
