Holiday Gifts for Language Learners~
Here are some ideas for language learning enthusiasts this holiday season!
(Some specific examples will be focused on Chinese/Korean as the target language. None of the links are affiliate links. amazon is linked to out of convenience, but there are usually other places that these things can be purchased at!)
Books!
There's a lot of textbooks out there that approach language learning from different perspectives. Textbooks can often be expensive, so checking out used book stores is a great idea! I really enjoy Modern Mandarin Chinese Grammar and this used copy in very good condition is so much cheaper than the original price! Also, TTMIK's latest books are currently on sale!
While on the subject of books, there are so many options for reading in foreign language! For lower level learners, graded readers are a great choice as you can find books at your current level that can grow with you! For example Tales and Traditions has four volumes of short stories and myths in Chinese, with each volume increasing in difficulty. Abridged Classics like this series from Sinolingua Press or this Journey to the West series.
For advanced learners, buying novels in your target language is also a great choice! Soo and Carrots has collected Korean novels recommended by members of BTS.
2. iTalki!
I've been using iTalki for the past couple months and I've really enjoyed it! It's great to learn from a native speaker now that I'm out of a classroom environment, but still actively pursuing a higher degree of Chinese as well as starting Korean. They have a lot of deals on packages and prices vary between teachers, so it's easy to find something in your budget! I do have a code for $5 (AC6AGf0) for new users.
3. Notetaking!
For traditional notetaking, I think these translucent sticky notes are great for taking notes that aren't a hassle to erase, while still showing the text that you're commenting on! I also love to put relevant stickers on my notebooks. Lots of fun options like 我不知道,加油 salamander, 자고 싶어, many Korean words of encouragement, and the Ted Cruz meme 这个人吃了我的儿子。
Digital notetakers might enjoy this goodnotes journal! It's highly customizable to whatever language you might be learning. I have two versions of it in my goodnotes, and each uses different pages for Korean and Chinese. Goodnotes itself is also a great gift if you want to upgrade from free or a yearly subscription to total ownership!
4. Language Learning Apps/Sites!
I try to work within the free world as much as possible, but there are some things worth paying for! Reading apps for Chinese like Du Chinese, or my favorite, Readibu are super helpful! Readibu is free, but the paid option has a lot of great features!
Also for those missing TTMIK after they added a paywall to a lot of content, a membership to their courses would be great!
5. Movies and TV!
Besides the benefit of immersion, learning a language is also about learning another culture. Right now the Criterion Collection is 50% off at B&N until December 4th!
For TV, getting a subscription to a site like Viki or iQiYi is a great gift as they have new shows from many asian countries!

My 2023 language goals
(A little rant about goals [feel free to skip ahead]:
If you don’t have a goal in mind, you more than likely won’t be able to learn a language. It’s important to have goals so you can work towards them… do you know how satisfying it is to see yourself fulfill a goal that you set?
However, if your goal is too extreme, you also are likely to not succeed in your target language. Maybe your goal is to become fluent in 1-2 years… and so you’ll study for a year, and you’ll see that you’re not at all fluent. You’ll probably think: “Why am I not fluent? I studied so hard to get no where near what I wanted.” But you did get somewhere, your ambitions were just too strong.
It’s important to set small and achievable goals and if you want to set a big goal like “Become fluent in _____,” don’t set a specific time frame. Allow yourself to slowly work towards the big goal. The small goals will still satisfy you while you work towards your bigger goal.)
한국어 (Korean)
Get to TTMIK level 4
Get to HTSK Unit 2
Aquire more vocabulary
Become conversational - actually practice introductions
Study some more Korean Culture
Practice reading and pronunciation
Don’t forget to continue practicing listening comprehension and writing
Improve handwriting
Study past TOPIK questions just for some practice
Understand Peppa Pig?
Español (Spanish)
Review everything
Improve listening comprehension
Learn more vocabulary specific to me
Be able to understand (complete) YouTube videos
Don’t fail Honors Spanish 3 EOC exam
Go from B1 to B2
Actually choose a dialect/accent because can’t keep going just speaking a mix of every Spanish dialect
Get more comfortable with speaking
日本語 (Japanese):
(If that’s not how you type “Japanese” in Japanese please lmk 😅)
Completely learn Hiragana
Completely learn Katakana
Learn as many Kanji as possible
Study Japanese culture
Practice reading to get as good as possible before starting grammar and vocabulary
Start grammar and vocabulary???
Improve handwriting (god it’s so bad)
Find resources/podcasts/music/YT channels to practice listening comprehension
Find online grammar resources because no money

My language summer goals ->
German - thankfully i passed the exam i was stressing about so i'll just try to chill with it and set some sort of routine because i hate the intermediate plateau and want to get out
• listen to podcasts/videos in german at least once everyday
• finally make an anki deck
Korean - honestly i feel good about my korean learning speed this year but since i have a lot more free time on my hands now i'll try to study a bit more
• finish ttmik level 2 book, possibly order more?
• finish watching that kdrama i've started like two months ago
Mandarin/Portuguese - haven't decided what i want to go with yet and i have a horrible feeling i'm just gonna end up learning both of them at once. so once i figure that out...
• start with the basics
• order materials/books etc.
We'll see if anything here gets completed, because i am a horrible person when it comes to time management and setting a routine but i have hope :)

2023 December 27
Watched the new BTS documentary episodes with my bestie! These eps picked up a lot but I’m sad about the lack of context tbh.
• Anki in the morning
• TTMIK Level 2 Lesson 10
• Tried the new TTMIK story app! The story I read was challenging and the audio was great. I want it after the trial but it’s so expensive 😭
• Reviewing the first story from Easy Korean Reading for Beginners: Cooking.

01.09.23 - 1/100dop
moved out of my accommodation so the productivity has just been packing and unpacking (and some tidying to help around the house)! but that’s fine
no photo today since there’s nothing even mildly aesthetic to post about that lol
i’m glad i get to see my family and pets again after a long term+summer away 💛
bonus 2023 life update:
second term - uni continued to go okay after christmas vacation; mental wellbeing continued to be slightly questionable
easter vacation - saw friends, tried to revise (could have done more but didn’t go too badly)
third term - shorter than the others, less work since exams were coming up but the content was a bit spicy
exams - oh boy - a mixture honestly, shoutout to one subject for having both my best and worst papers. we got through it, thanks to my friends ngl
internship - 2 months summer lab internship! it was definitely an Experience but i enjoyed it, read/learned/figured out a Lot and had some really nice colleagues
results - another 2-1! a very high one as well so i am happy. but i do think a first is within reach for my final year (which counts for everything). materials was my lowest grade and kind of least favourite overall so girl bye, it’s chemistry for the foreseeable future
other:
languages - ngl really fell off since easter bc uni / working 9-5 was tiring. we’re so back though (we’re actually not, ttmik went paid-only so not sure what i’m going to do about that… in the meantime, duo italian my beloved…) i might just buy the ttmik level 4 (or 3, which i’m technically on) book
personal - taking steps with my mental state, actually a W at this point
new piercings and piercing plans. hehe
that is all.

languages i'm fluent in:
norwegian (native): i'm born and raised in norway, which kind of speaks for itself. i speak a dialect close to standard østnorsk. (send me an ask if you're curious!) if you want a language exchange partner or grammar explanations or general help with the language, i'm here to help! my primary målform is bokmål but i know nynorsk too because i'm cool and sexy obviously. i will also talk at lenght about norwegian sociolects and dialects if you prompt me!
serbocroatian (native, heritage): my mum came to norway some thirty years ago and raised me in serbian, so this one's technically a heritage language, but i deem myself native :) i speak ekavski and i read and write in latinica and ćirilica, cursive as well. if you want grammar or language help or a language exchange partner or tips for learning cursive i'm here! i didn't learn cursive until a few years ago so the memory's still pretty fresh...
english (fluent): i started learning english when i was six and kept learning it for eleven years, so by now i'm pretty much fluent to the point where people ask if i'm british because i (unfortunately) acquired a scottish/northern english accent on the way to fluency... here too i am always up for a language exchange and ready to help with anything :) i write british english as well as i can, but american slang makes its way into my sentences no matter how hard i try ...
languages i'm learning:
korean (ttmik 5): i know ttmik 6 isn't really a good level signifier for those who don’t use the ttmik curriculum, but i haven't taken any official tests yet. i've been self-studying korean since august of 2020, so close to three years now. while i can't give as extensive help in korean as in the languages i'm fluent in, i'm always up to help, give tips and do language exchanges ^_^ (and rave about the history of the language)
french (b1): i studied french for five years in school, now i’m continuing on my own, and i can hold conversations without too much struggle! went on a school trip to paris last year and really got to test it out :) i can read and write and speak and listen on a number of topics, and i'm close to fluency, i think. always up for doing a language exchange here too! my french grammar is a bit of a mess, but i'll help anyone to the best of my abilities ^^
latin (2 years): i took latin for two years and enjoyed it immensely! i've had the luck to have a fluent teacher, so my speaking latin is pretty good. i’m going on 2 take it as an additional subject in uni this year :) i study classical latin with classical pronunciation and i'm always up for a chat about it! as with other languages i am always up to help, but i don't think a language exchange for latin is viable, so i'll keep it at help with grammar and tangents about antiquity.

langblr reactivation challenge | week one, day two
2022.11.15 • write a list of goals for your target languages
i've always taken a one-language-at-a-time approach when it comes to language learning. i did that while i was learning english. i've been doing it since i started learning korean. and although i still wanna focus on korean rn i really wanna try dabbling in italian, no pressure just have fun with it. so my goals are:
short-term goals (1 month) korean: study every day for at least one hour + review some grammar points from yonsei 2-2 + finish ttmik's situational dialogs in korean italian: i just want to have fun with the language and be able to introduce myself
mid-term goals (6 months) english: since i plan on applying to grad school i need to start prepping for the toefl exam + read at least one book in english per month and just maintain my proficiency level korean: be comfortable having at least 30 min long conversations + finish KGIU for beginners + complete keisp's 2-2 korean course italian: be able to understand tweets + have simple conversations in italian
long-term (1 year) english: get toefl's C2 certificate korean: get a TOPIK 3 certificate + read at least one book in korean + hold 1 hour long conversation
note: i’ve defined “short-term” as things i’ll concentrate on in the near future, by the end of the year, and “long-term” as within a year. i did it that way so that my goals more realistic and achievable (SMART goals) ;)

hi! I'm an English-speaking army, and I really want to get the line from Black Swan that translates to "nothing can devour [swallow] me" in the original Korean but when I tried to translate it I got a couple different translations and I'm really confused and I don't want to be walking around like a clown with weird phrasing or smthng, do you know what the correct line would be? These are the three I got; the first two I was haphazardly grabbing the lyrics from Genius and trying to guess where the phrasing ended, and the last I googled the phrase in English and translated it like that (which obviously isn't right because it's not their lyrics but I'm confused as to why there's so many different ways to say it)
그 무엇 도 날 삼킬 수 없어 힘껏 나는
그 무엇 도 날 삼킬 수 없어
아무것도 날 삼킬 수 없어
hey pal! i’m by no means an expert (i’m only level 2 in ttmik lmaoooo) but from a quick look at doolsetbangtan it looks like the best and most accurate option from the lyrics would be “그 무엇도 날 삼킬 수 없어” (so basically your second option, minus the space between 무엇 and 도). i’m not korean tho, so if you want to be confident that you won’t look dumb with these words (i’m assuming -) tattooed? on you, i would try to ask someone who is korean, even better if they’re a tattoo artist! there are many different ways to say that phrase in korean just like there are many different ways to say that phrase in english! don’t worry too much about finding tons of diff translations it’s just bc a lot of synonyms exist lmao

Hello 👋 I see many langblrs/studyblrs have intros so I thought I should write one too.
Heritage Languages: English and Spanish. Grew up in a Hispanic household and raised in the States.
Target Languages: Japanese and Korean. I've studied up to the N2 level in Japanese and debating if I should study the N1 content 🥺😵‍💫. I'm on level 8 of the TTMIK core grammar course. (2/19/2024)
Other Language Interests: Italian / Portuguese / French / Russian. Those are just my top interests but I also think Greek / Thai / Arabic / Turkish / Chinese / Hungarian / Polish / German / Swedish / Romanian would be cool to learn down the line.
Outside of languages here's a little about me:
I'm 26 and I have more interests than I do hobbies 😂 The biggest reason is my biggest hobby/career path has to do with languages lol. But anyway, I'm interested in ice skating, kpop choreo, baking, cooking. I like watching movies, tv series (english/spanish/japanese/korean), and anime. Trying to get back into reading again. I am a café girlie 🫠 I am on the hunt for the best matcha latte. I would love to travel more but I've been to Japan and Korea at least once already.

2023 Second Quarter Language Plan
It’s been so long since I updated my Tumblr. I’m back with another language plan to hold myself accountable. Some updates are that I decided to not study French this year meaning al my progress will significantly regress. But the main reason is because I began studying Korean last year and next spring I will be taking TOPIK 2 and German intermediate in my university. So I will be putting heavy emphasis on those two languages for the time being. My German skills used to be so much better but since I moved to Korea and finished my spring semester at uni I haven't had many opportunities to speak and study German.  Maybe I should add additional information... I’m currently living in Seoul and I will be study Korean for the next 6 months to reach level 4 TOPIK. Okay that's all for that
Korean Study Goals
Introduce 30 new words into my vocabulary daily
1-2 italki classes per week
4 hours of Korean language school
Review notes every weekday
Do 2 lessons of HowToStudyKorean daily to review/ learn new grammar
Write in Korean in my journal
Listen to 4 podcasts in only Korean (TTMIK, 최수수, 타요니, 몰입한국어)
finish my 2급 and 3급 courses and textbooks
Complete my TTMIK level 4 and 5 by the end of the year
Complete my Vitamin Korean Textbook 3
Study on Memerise daily for 2 hour to review vocabulary
Seeing as I only have around 5 months left in the year my Korean goals are a bit more ambitious. However, since living in Seoul and taking such intensive language classes I have a lot more time to dedicate towards my Korean studies. Currently I’m studying around 2x the amount as was able to study due to uni meaning I can progress at a quicker rate. But of course that will slow down once I have to return back to uni and focus my studies on science, maths, and German. Meaning I will have to dedicate a lot of my free time to studying for TOPIK 2. Also during this time I want to work on my Korean Handwriting since it's not aesthetic enough for my liking. it took me a long time to actually enjoy my English handwriting (my mother tongue) so this will probably take year lmaoo
German Study Goals
Introduce 10 new words into my vocabulary daily
1-2 italki classes per month
1 hours of Buusu and 30 minutes Duolingo German reading Every wed. thur. sun. to learn vocabulary
Review notes 1-3 times per week
Write in German in my journal/planner 2x weekly
Watch Easy German video and write a small summary in German
complete my complete German textbook
Since German isn't my priority language it’s not getting tons of love but I want to start studying harder so I don't regress before my German class in uni. It's much more speaking focused and in German my speaking is not really great since I don't have a much opportunity to speak it in New York.

2023 December 26
Really productive day studying Korean. Haven’t had one of those in a loooong while. Excuse the mess—it was cold and I wanted to study under my electric blanket. 😭
• reviewed previous TTMIK Level 2 lessons (it’s been a long time I’m telling you lol)
• completed TTMIK Level 2 Lessons 7, 8, 9
• Dialogue 2 from Real-Life Korean Conversations for Beginners by TTMIK
• Day 5 + Quiz from Days 1-5 of 10-Minute Korean by TTMIK
• Anki
You can tell I don’t want to grind with my Korean Grammar in Use lol but this was genuinely nice and I’m happy with my work today in a way I haven’t been in a while!

being at (parents’) home is super weird. not in a bad way, tho i do miss uni (home) a lot, but it’s very strange feeling more like a teenager again. and noticing the town that was Home for 18 years… feel less like home.

korean lessons once again going strong! (one a day. consistency > intensity for me)
revision for uni going less strong. going to have to fix that sometime soon 🙃
forgot how stressful xmas present shopping is! i hate it here
tasks for today:
korean lesson (ttmik level 2 lesson 13) ✅
organic chem revision no❤️
python coursework (top priority) ✅
maybe order some xmas gifts for people idk i looked but didn’t order ✳️
안녕히 가세요!
(woah just looked at my oldest korean notes. practice really does improve writing in 한글 lmao)
