THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT IT FEELS LIKE TO BE AN ADOLESCENT GIRL.

Living in Barbieland (childhood girlhood) but then suddenly you're all grown up in the real world subject to scrutiny and sexualisation (the guy slapping Barbie's ass) and feeling like existing is a crime?

Being forced by adult men into a box (which leads to the not like other girls syndrome) and exploring the 'real world' (being forced to grow up too quickly) while fighting the realisation that maybe the world sucks and being a woman is so difficult while hoping with all your heart that it's not always going to be this way.

Losing touch with the very things that made you happy because they're considered immature and girly? (The group of teens that said they hadn't played with Barbies since they were five.)

Older women telling you that you have to learn the truth about the world and that you can never have your old life back (Kate Mckinnon's Barbie) despite it being the only thing you yearn for, but also older women being a bright spot and support (the old woman on the bench) in the endless slough of life.

And this is just the trailer!!! I'm so excited for this movie I can't breathe, Greta Gerwig the woman that you are 😭

oh my god so wait is the barbie movie about growing up and having to become and adult because you've outgrown the space you've been a part of for so long but the "real world" doesnt feel right either and you dont want to be forced to change no matter what everyone says but also you cant go back to before and oh man oh man is it gonna be about learning how to have both and that it will be okay and and and and

i was thinking about how the only thing i didn't love in the full barbie trailer was ken in the real world hospital, telling a doctor that he should be able to do surgery because he's a man, and doesn't believe that's she's a doctor as a woman. it's very un-ken of him—ken was created exclusively to support barbie. he doesn't have a real job of his own! if anyone understands women having real jobs, it should be him.

so i was thinking there must be something else going on, like maybe traveling to the real world opens ken's eyes to the possibility of a patriarchy and men having more power (something that obviously doesn't exist in barbieland). then i read this quote from greta gerwig:

and i was like "hmm maybe barbieland is like the garden of eden and he gets tempted with the fruit of knowledge lol" and then i watched the trailer again and saw that at some point BARBIELAND becomes KENDOM:

and i'm putting some puzzle pieces together…obviously there's still much to be explored and i think greta gerwig is a genius so i'm sure there are even more layers than i think but i just wanted to put these thoughts down so i can refer back to them in july!

He is the most divorced dad to ever live. This man is oblivious in all sense of the word and blindly loves his children. This man thinks their interests haven’t changed changed since they were 7 and goes along with whatever they say. This man is the girl dad and has worn a tiara and played imaginary tea-party. This man tries to tell his children off before he just lets them get away with it because he’s tired and the kids are cute. This man is trying. This man is so divorced.
