I was tagged by @corleyan to post my nine favourite first-watch films of 2023. I'm so grateful to have a Letterboxd account or else I'd never remember. Also, I watched fuck all this year so 😬
1. Imagine Me and You (2005)
Yes, it's true. I did not see this classic of lesbian cinema until 2023. Anyway, I loved it. I love Lena Headey and I love that there is very little drama attached to the main characters' queerness, it's all about whether they'll get together or not. Considering this came out in the noughties, a very unkind decade, it has actually aged reasonably well too.
2. Renfield (2023)
This film is so fucking silly, I love it. I can be very on-the-fence about violence but this is so over-the-top and cartoony, and Nicolas Cage is just more and more melodramatic as the film goes on that I couldn't help but have fun.
3. Flux Gourmet (2022)
Gwendoline Christie, my beloved 😍 This film is so fucking weird and it leans hard into its weirdness, and I love that about it so much. It's such a fun watch and isn't afraid to be silly.
4. Knives Out (2019)
A really fun mystery that reminded me that films don't always have to be so serious to be good.
5. Barbie (2023)
This was a lot of fun and they managed to include a message too. And yes, Barbie, I do sometimes think about dying. But that's okay and normal!
6. I Am Not A Witch (2017)
This film is surreal and funny and desperately sad. Is Shula a witch or is she just a little girl? Does it matter? Some really stunning cinematography in this too.
7. Black Swan (2010)
Yep yep yep, I am perpetually behind the trends on films. I had absorbed some information about this film by osmosis but actually some of what I thought I knew was incorrect, so I probably found this a bit more confusing than it needed to be. Still, really good film and I think I'll enjoy it more on a re-watch now that I know what really happens.
8. Notes on a Scandal (2006)
It freaked me out a bit to watch this early last year and go "Cate Blanchett is so young, a baby!" when actually she was only a year or so younger than I was (watching it) when this was made. But anyway, this was pretty good and the relationship between Cate Blanchett and Judi Dench's characters grows increasingly suffocating and sinister as the film continues.
9. TÁR (2022)
My wife came to the cinema with me to see this and she haaaaaated it and said she was never coming to see any of my "arty-farty films" ever again 😅
And I kind of see where she's coming from (although she also doesn't really like Cate Blanchett), but I'm still glad I went to see this. Supporting women's rights and women's wrongs ☝️ I thought Blanchett's performance was phenomenal, and Tár's fall from grace was satisfying. However, I don't think this is something I'll watch again.

I was tagged by @pia-writes-things to post 9 of my fave film first watches of 2023, which is only easy as I watched a record low number of movies.
So without further ado:
Marcel the Shell with Shoes on (#1 by a country mile): OMG OMG OMG. If you have not already seen this, go find it on a streaming platform immediately. I was sobbing from like the 2nd minute in--truly an incredible concept, and such a great examination of community, grief, etc. It goes without saying, get the hankies ready.
Femme: opposite end of the spectrum, a revenge fantasy about a guy that gets gaybashed, and then decides to make his attacker fall in love with him. Dark and thought provoking, and probably quite difficult for most people to find online.
Talk To Me: this gets a shoutout mostly because I saw it at a secret screening and it was a cool concept, very well paced, not too many jumpscares (though certainly violent), and with a decent ending (which is hard for the horror indies to nail).
Tar: I doubt I need to say much--I am sure this is a lesbian Tumblr darling. A film that says, hey, women can be cunts too, you know--except unlike men, they'll pay the price for it. (okay, it says a lot more than that, but you already know).
Barbie: I felt such a sense of joy coming out of the theatre, one that I hadn't felt in ages--also I just loved seeing so many dressed in pink for weeks around all the cinemas.
Next Goal Wins: only just snuck this into 2023, a very entertaining comedy based on American Samoa's football team. If you watch Taika Waititi's films, you know what you're getting.
Spiderman Across the Spiderverse: another Tumblr favourite, so no more needs saying--I do think the animation is absolutely sublime and I love how dark they went with it.
Air: aka the Nike Michael Jordan story. I know Ben and Matt are not Tumblr's favourite people (except for memes that is), however the movie is both a fascinating look into Jordan's mother, and her sheer belief in her son's brand and skill--and it's also a really interesting look into Nike. It's also just a damn solid, well acted film.
Glass Onion: another Tumblr favourite...
Tried to actively stay away from talking Ros and Sophie films, or any that I've already blogged or reblogged gifsets of. I could do a few more shoutouts but they sort of fall into a similar category as some of the above.
Tagging the following randoms: @fallonash @realizewherereallies @theycannotfindmenow and @readingtheentrails (think it's just meant to be 4?)

My experience with Aftersun (2022)
One of my best friends watched this a few days ago and was really excited about it and excited for me to check it out, which always makes me a bit nervous because I don’t like to disappoint, but it turned out there was nothing to worry about here, I really enjoyed the movie and was surprised by how close to home it felt.
Before I get into the main event I wanted to just jot down some smaller things I loved. First off the fact that Sophie’s parents say “I love you”  to each other still, despite being separated, and his explanation to her about why that is. I also really enjoyed the focus on Sophie experiencing and observing people being physically affectionate in a romantic context, and the underlying theme of her mind opening up to that side of life throughout this trip, including the fact that the last and most drawn out instance of this is her watching two men kissing after only seeing heterosexual couples throughout the rest of the movie, which went nicely with the later reveal that adult Sophie has a wife and daughter.
Alright, now onto the thing the movie is mostly about.
The way Sophie dresses and acts and the circumstances of the vacation read as very familiar to me, the whole thing had almost this flashback quality from my perspective, and Sophie’s relationship with her dad really reminded me of my dad and I as well. The closeness, the gentleness, down to the scene where he is teaching her how to get away from an attacker and she’s not taking it very seriously and he’s trying to make her understand this is important, I swear I’ve lived through an almost identical version of that.
Another thing that felt familiar was the physicality between them. I think in general stories about the relationship between a parent and a child tend to emphasize touch more when it involves mothers, however, my experience with my parents was very balanced, and my dad took very close care of me. It was emotional to see that closeness onscreen, not only in affectionate touches, like Calum carrying Sophie around, or the way she hangs off him constantly (which I also did a lot with my dad - and still do!), but in utilitarian ones too, like the scene where Calum takes Sophie’s shoes off, or applies sunscreen to her back.
To build on that, the sheer fact that he was attuned to her schedule and committed to deliberately caring for her, not just in the sense of providing, but of nurturing, and that he did so very naturally, was incredibly special, and I think reflects the current zeitgeist where we’re seeing more and more stories that challenge some of the archetypes of masculinity. I thought it was interesting that the movie itself brings up that dichotomy when it shows Calum’s frustration at not having more money to spend on Sophie and the pressure he feels around that.
The fact that their relationship was so loving though, only makes it all the more heartbreaking when you realize how much pain Calum is in and how lost he feels. Once it becomes clear where things are headed it’s apparent that he is saying goodbye to Sophie at every turn, with every gesture, and that he means all the love he feels for her really sincerely, and deeply regrets not being able to give her more of himself. He is constantly grieving the time they won’t have. The movie does a great job of showing how complex the situation is, and makes it nearly impossible to judge Calum because there is just not an ounce of anger in how it tells his story.
Considering this was based on the director’s real life, I think both the daughter inside the movie and the real one outside of it hold these memories and relay them in a way that serves as a testament to the man their father was; he did something that was deeply devastating for her and yet, the way she remembers him is completely coated in two things: empathy for his pain and the absolute certainty of his love for her.
The movie also reminded me of this post:

Anyway, the direction was great, the whole thing is shot beautifully and Paul Mescal and Frankie Corio give really wonderful performances.
