I know it is a problem, but everytime I hear someone say "Media Literacy is dead", I just hear someone saying "I'm so much smarter than these idiots!", like they themselves already know everything about how media literacy works, have never had an uninformed or biased take and that stories have ONE WAY they can ever be read or experienced or understood.
But maybe I'm misunderstanding the trend, so let's get this out: when people say there is a media literacy crisis, what EXACTLY do you mean?
Every year people complain Hollywood doesn't make anything original anymore, but every year there are HUNDREDS of original independent films that play in limited theaters or for one weekend if you keep your eyes out, and this year with Hollywood reeling from the strikes, it's actually a great opportunity year for indies to make some waves.
Right now an indie darling making the round is called "Hundreds of Beavers", it's a bizarre slapstick, just watch the trailer...
I figured I'd repost that list of other animation creators on YouTube that I shared last week, separate from it's original, weird context.
I've also included several more entries based on suggestions in the comments. Thanks for the feedback!
General Content Warning: Some of the below is not for kids, or contains violence or other subject matter some viewers might find distressing. Please use your adult discretion.
Also, this is not a list of moral endorsements. I know some of these creators personally, but many of them I do not. While I have tried to make sure I'm not listing anyone who is a criminal or otherwise objectively harmful person, I don't have encyclopedic knowledge of every little internet drama that has gone down (and chances are I'm not super interested in hearing about it all because it's really difficult to tell fact from fiction from hyperbole around here).
Anyway, check out some Indie Animation:

There's been some concerns voiced about the upcoming Netflix Avatar and I can't say I don't understand why, though it obviously too soon to call it. The official statements saying how they want the show to be like Game of Thrones is not completely damming, going into the politics could be asset but how 'Game of Thrones' are we talking?
Some have said that costuming in the 2010 travesty looked better, and for all people are miffed over the 'sokka sexism' comments, I'll remind people even back with the original, you had those people complaining about the 'Women can be fighters too!' message, so I do find the current 'backlash' a little funny, however the real unsetting point are the actors comments calling classic Sokka's sexism 'iffy', when there was nothing iffy about it, because it was a trait clearly framed as a negative that he needed to learn from. Then again, I'm not going to go as far as to say (yet) that this is ruining Sokka, because it was only a trait for 4 episodes.
Honestly what I'm most worried about in terms of potential changes:
I afraid they are going to make Zutara a thing. It's one of the only things old fans really wanted in the original series. And that seems unlikely given the current canon future but I have feeling it will at least be teased if not turned into a triangle all together. Again, I don't think it's that likely, it's just the thing I'm most worried about at the moment.
Hey cellspex what are your thoughts on the boy and the heron winning best animated feature at the golden globes? I think it was well deserved for Miyazaki even through I was rooting for spider verse. I am still kinda salty that spider verse didn’t win any nominations. But still very happy for the boy and the heron
p.s. what did you think of Suzume being nominated as well?
Both movies are deserving, and I do think the choice was impacted by it being Miyazaki's 'Last' Film, that it is still in theaters now and that they feel they will honor Spiderverse at the end of it's trilogy like the Oscars did for Lord of the Rings.
You can be happy and disappointed at the same time.
