its disability awareness month so lets get fuckin real about tourettes and tic disorders bc some people STILL don’t get it
Dispelling some myths
NO you can’t ‘catch tics’ from watching tiktok videos.
NO anxiety, OCD, ADHD, and Autism do not cause tics, HOWEVER, they are extremely common in people with TS/tic disorders and up to 90% have them as comorbidities.
NO ticcing in your sleep is not a sign of epilepsy.
NO CBD/THC are not magical cures.
NO not everyone with tics has tourettes. Tic disorders are there own seperate diagnoses from tourettes and many other neurologic disorders (and things like degenerative diseases, brain injuries, and enviromental toxin exposure) have tics or tic-like movements.
and finally
PEOPLE WITH TICS DO NOT TIC 24/7
FAQS
Do you tic during sex????!?!?!
First- stop asking strangers this, you’re CREEPY. Second, normally no, tics tend to lessen while ‘distracted’.
Isn’t Tourettes just swearing?
Nope! It includes motor movements, other vocalizations, many comorbid mental health disorders, and phenomenon like tic attacks and uncomfortable urges before tics. Coprolalia and copropraxia (the swearing and inappropriate gestures) actually only appear in ~10% of TS patients.
Do tics hurt?
Technically, the sensation of ticcing is just uncomfortable. However if the ticcing invovles self-hitting or anything that would normally be considered self-injurious, or the tic repeatedly happens and strains a muscle, then yes, it hurts.
Can I laugh?
This depends on the person. Some people are okay with it at anytime, others only if they’re laughing first, and for me- its okay as long as its not a tic where I’m hurting myself or something and othertimes, I want my tics ignored completely no matter how ‘funny’.
Is there a cure?
No. There are therapies and medications to help manage symptoms but there is no one ‘cure’ for tic disorders or tourettes syndrome.
And here are some of my other posts on Tics/TS terminology/Need-to-Knows:

TWO BIG DISCLAIMERS HERE:
1! Ofc you can draw him, but please do research on Tourette's before attempting to depict his Tourette's!
This is in order to avoid stereotypes and misconceptions.
2! Please don't ship him with other Sanses!
Sorry, this is just a personal comfort thing. You can ship that stuff in your head or in private spaces with friends, just not in public please, and don't let me know about it. ^^; (Plz it would make me very uncomfortable.)
Now that that's out of the way, look! It's him! :D I'm so exited to share this. I love him sm already. ;v; I've wanted to post this so bad the last couple of days, but I had to finish it first lol.
For anyone who doesn't know, I have Tourette's. Most of the tics I give him are ones I have or have had before. (Any others are one's I've heard of/seen from other ppl.) :> Btw, he's Tourette's Awareness color coded, and the ribbon embroidered on his jacket is the Tourette Syndrome ribbon. :D (Never realized before that my theme colors that I use everywhere are so close to the Tourette's Awareness color and that makes me very happy.)
I hope ppl like my silly lil neurospicy Sans. (Especially anyone else who might also have Tourette's.) ;v;

Tourettes Awareness Month day 5!
Since I talked about some negative stuff yesterday, I'll be trying to keep today lighter but still informative!
Today I'll be talking about tic prevention and ways I use to ease the affect of my tics.
⚠️ Everyone with TS and tic disorders is different, this is just my personal experiences
Number 1 tic prevention in my case is headphones! Since my tics can be triggered by sudden loud noises, headphones are my go-to, particularly in storms. I also have a go-to tic soothing Playlist on my Spotify. If I'm already twitchy, or it's storming I'll usually be found with my headphones.
Fidgets is another big thing for prevention, but also mitigation. Early in my diagnosis I discovered rubber ducks were a really good fidget for myself and carried one in my pocket most of the first year after my diagnosis. I also wear necklaces that I can fidget with. I don't use ducks as often now, but I still always have something to fidget with. If I start ticcing some fidget can keep my hands busy, and if my "bad ones" tic hits I have soft fidgets to squeeze so I'm less likely to hurt myself.
Also there are some youtubers/streamers whose vibes can help me calm down, or I've watched their content enough that it's become comfort content. Some notable names here would be Arcolf, MontyGlu, Distortion Devil, MatPat, Loey Lane, Markiplier, Jacksepticeye, Ze Frank, and Dingo Doodles.
So I don't have a service animal, but one of my cats and one of my mom's dogs have kind of trained themselves to help me with tics. If they are around when I start ticcing they'll try to come to me so I can pet them and get myself calm. My cat actually knows the phrase "nap time" because if I come home in a fit I'll tell her it's nap time, so she'll run to my room and wait for me. Then she lays on top of me and purrs until I'm done ticcing, then she lays next to me to cuddle until I fall asleep. ❤️
Engaging in embroidery can also help soothe or prevent tics, as it keeps my hands busy and my mind focused. Sometimes drawing or writing helps too, but one of my tics is specifically "throw pen", but I have yet to throw a needle. I'm also better at embroidery than drawing so it makes me happier. (Putting trashcatsews in the tags on this post so you can check out some of my creations if you'd like)
My mom's favorite way to help with my tics is kind of funny, because its purely distraction. The easiest way she does this is "here hold this" followed by handing me a random object. It's not foolproof and sometimes I just throw what she hands me but it works often enough that she still does it.
That's all of my main prevention and mitigation tactics, but I'm sure I'm forgetting some. As always thank you for reading, and my asks are open if you have any questions or curiosities 😊

It's Tourette's Awareness Month!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
To celebrate Tourette’s awareness month, I want to share my first ever Tourettic headcanon. Maggey Byrde. She’s hyperactive, restless, easily irritated and is known for having bad luck just follow her around, which is often what having Tourette’s feels like. It’s no one’s fault, it’s just bad luck, and it causes many problems in its wake. But despite all of the difficulties she faces, and the judgement she gets from a neurotypical world, she still has such a go-getter attitude and never gives up on trying to live a normal life.
Tourette’s has taught me so much about life and trying to find meaning and appreciation for life. So here’s to all of us.
Thanks so much to @probablygayattorneys for making this edit for me!

giving you something to lean on
“Ritsu-kun?”
Still, nothing. He was definitely worried now. As much as Ritsu may dislike him, he was still always polite and wouldn’t just blatantly ignore him like this. Maybe he was sick or something? Arataka craned his neck, scanning him for possible injuries.
And that’s when he noticed the blood.
“Holy crap! Ritsu, you’re bleeding!” he exclaimed, fumbling out of his seat and running to him. It looked even worse up close. Blood coated both his hands like a second skin, and speaking of skin, his looked pretty torn up.
No response.
Now that he was closer, Arataka could hear his very quiet, almost sporadic breathing. Shoot. Something was really wrong.
[or, ritsu is stressed & can't stop scratching, so he goes to reigen for help]
🍃7,241 words | platonic ritsu & reigen🍃
s/o to @cowgirlwizard for helping me out whenever i got stuck <3

-Rage attacks -Self-injurious behaviour -Sensory issues -Obessions: harming others or self, intrusive nonsense words, music, or sounds, thoughts about catatrophic incidents -Compulsions: checking, excessive washing, toothbrushing, cleaning rituals, counting (arithmomania), hoarding, and collecting things  -Premonitory urges: the horrible sensation that comes before ticcing and that builds up and is only relieved by ticcing

Ask box open!
(Opening it back up now bc I can't get that last drawing done rn anyway, bc I don't have a working tablet cord. :'>)
Which means!
Tourette's Awareness Month ask event starts now!
Ask me or Tic anything about our Tourette's, or Tourette's/Tic Disorder related things in general! Going until the end of Tourette's Awareness Month! (June 15th) (Not that you can't ask me about these things any other time. I'm just asking for it rn lmao. Plus Tic will be answering the asks abt him himself during this.)
If you wanna send an ask, but don't know what to ask abt, maybe.. do some research on Tourette's? :> Watch a Tourette's Youtuber/content creator? :> And come back. Prepared with your new knowledge? :>
It is Tourette's Awareness Month after all. :> (If you don't have the time or something, that's fine. No pressure. <3)
And ofc, Happy Tourette's Awareness Month to those with Tourette's, or any Tic Disorder!!! :D

Above is the link to the prompt challenge I've set up for Tourette's Syndrome Awareness Month 2023 (May 15th - June 15th). There are 15 prompts for fanfic writers to fill out over the course of the month
If you do not personally have Tourette's or a tic disorder, I heavily urge you to do some proper research before writing about it because misrepresenting Tourette's is not what we're going for here

Going to bed and the Tourette's decides that it's its time to shine is infuriating. I just want to relax and go to sleep. I wish it would stop. I really wish it would stop. My body feels like it's on fire all over on the inside. My muscles are crawling. It's a horrible feeling.
