Famous Five Art Nostalgia #01 – Part 2
Introductory post
Part 1
I’m postponing the “#12 Five Go Down to the Sea” post until Sunday but here’s a little treat to tide you over!
Five on a Treasure Island – Le Club des Cinq et le trésor de l’île
Original publication date: 1942 (UK), 1962 (France)
Tumblr media
(Cover art by Jean Sidobre, 1975)
Plot summary (adapted from Wikipedia):
When siblings Julian, Dick and Anne cannot go for their usual summer holiday to Polseath, they are invited to spend the summer with their Aunt Fanny and Uncle Quentin at their home Kirrin Cottage, in the coastal village of Kirrin. They also meet their cousin Georgina, a surly, difficult girl, who tries hard to live like a boy and only answers to the name George. Despite an uncomfortable start, the cousins become firm friends and George introduces them to her beloved dog Timothy (Timmy), who secretly lives with the fisher boy, Alf, in the village as George's parents will not allow her to keep Timmy.

(This is George’s face upon meeting her cousins)
In the middle of Kirrin Bay sits a smallish island that belongs to George’s family. She soon accepts to lead her cousins to the island to show them around and visit the old castle ruins there.

(After becoming friends, George teaches Anne how to swim)
Tumblr media
(Julian finds the way to thaw George’s heart 🍨)
On their way to Kirrin Island, George shows her cousins a shipwreck, explaining it was her great-great-great grandfather's ship. He had been transporting gold when the ship was wrecked in a storm, but despite divers investigating the wreck, the gold was never found. After visiting the wreck, the five arrive on the Island and are exploring the ruined castle when a huge storm blows up, making it too dangerous for them to return to the mainland. While they take shelter on the island, the sea throws up the old shipwreck, grounding it on the rocks surrounding the island. Excited by these developments, they decide to come back at dawn the next day to investigate the wreck before it is discovered.

Tumblr media
(Julian is excited on the morning before exploring the wreck; Dick WILL be excited as soon as he’s awake 😴)
The following day, the five visit the wreck and discover the captain's cabin, where they find some objects belonging to George's great-great-great-grandfather, including an old box which they take back to Kirrin Cottage. The box proves difficult to open, so they throw it from the highest window of the house. The box breaks open, but the noise disturbs Uncle Quentin who confiscates the box. Not willing to give up their quest, Julian sneaks into Uncle Quentin's study and takes the box, which contains an old map of Kirrin Castle. Later in the further investigation on the map, the children find a word INGOTS, which they later understand it represents the place in which the lost gold was buried. The children realise it is a treasure map showing the location of the lost gold. After making a tracing of the map and returning the box, they decide to find the gold themselves.
To the children's shock, the box containing the map is sold to an antique collector. The same man also makes an offer to buy Kirrin Island. The children realise he has unearthed the secret map and wants the gold for himself, and so begins a race for the five to get to the gold first. Thinking the children want to spend time at the island before it is sold, Uncle Quentin and Aunt Fanny allow them to go camping there for one week.
Arriving on the island, the five start searching the castle ruins to locate the old dungeons where the gold is hidden. Chasing a rabbit, Timmy falls down an old well, from where the children find the dungeon entrance. Exploring underground, they find the gold in a locked vault.

(Studying the map on the island)
Tumblr media
(Timmy starts a long-suffering career of being hauled up and down holes by his enterprising two-legged friends)
Tumblr media
(When Julian puts his muscles to work, this door doesn’t stand a chance 😏)
Trouble soon arrives, as bad men come to the island hoping to steal the gold. They capture George and Julian, lock them in the dungeons and ask them to write a note to Anne and Dick up on the surface—a note that will induce those two back down into the dungeons. George writes the letter and Dick finds something fishy about it, as George has signed her name "Georgina", so Dick and Anne decide not to go down. Unable to find those two, the men leave the island, taking the oars from the children's boat so they cannot escape. Dick and Anne use the well shaft to rescue Julian and George from the dungeon, and the children hatch a plan to trap the men when they come back to the island with a boat to steal the gold.
Tumblr media
(Not just brawn: Julian wracks his brains searching for an idea for trapping the bad guys)
Although the plan goes wrong, the children manage to leave the men stranded on Kirrin Island. They return to the mainland to tell Uncle Quentin, Aunt Fanny and the police what has happened. The gold is recovered, and it is determined that it legally belongs to George's family, making them rich and enabling them to afford everything they have ever wanted. George's only wish is to be allowed to keep Timmy, and her parents agree. George also agrees to go to boarding school with Anne, because she and her cousins have become very good friends and also the school allowed pets.

Borderlands: Skies the Ultimate Treasure Hunter
Timothy tries to fight off Pretty Boy.

The Handsome Jackpot Part 8
“Let go of me! Watch those hands! Put me down!”
Timothy wails as he tries to wrestle free from the grip of four loader bots. They squeeze his arms and legs, almost enough to break him, and carry him up Jack’s tower, into the penthouse main office. Pretty Boy strolls up to them, with a shit-eating grin. “Well done, Freddie.”
“Thanks, Boss,” Freddie chimes as he saunters next to his bots.
“Freddie!” Timothy barks, “you will never get away this! You are so dead!”
“Newsflash, Timmy- I’ve already gotten away with it!” Freddie laughs and flicks Timothy’s nose.
“Welcome to your new home, Timothy Lawrence,” Pretty Boy sneers.
“There’s no way I’m staying here!” Timothy barks, “let me go!”
Pretty Boy smirks and waves his hand. “Leave us.”
The loader bots unceremoniously drop Timothy onto the floor and follow Freddie back into the elevator. Timothy quickly scrambles to his feet to square-up to Pretty Boy, but looks down, flabbergasted. “Wow, you’re even shorter in person.”
Pretty Boy- who barely reaches Timothy’s knees- glares up at him, then grins again. “I’m gonna make this real simple, Timmo. Work for me willingly, and I’ll make your life heaven. Refuse me, and I’ll make your life hell.”
“Ha!” Timothy scoffs, “you think you’re hot shit? You Jack wannabe? I worked for the real Handsome Jack! I’ve been through literal hell! I was his first clone! I was a Vault Hunter! I helped save Elpis! I’m Timothy freekin’ Lawrence, and I will never be a slave again!”
Pretty Boy’s grin darkens. “You think you can beat me alone?”
“Who said I was alone,” Timothy retorts as he pulls up his sleeve, revealing a wrist device. He presses it and three Jack digi-clones appear behind him.
“The world just got 25% more handsome,” they say as they aim their guns.
“Wow, impressive,” Pretty Boy remarks facetiously. “I have something like that. But mine is much more...substantial.”
Pretty Boy flips up the pommel on his walking stick and pushes a button. The whole tower seems to shake as something rises up out of the floor behind him- something large, golden, and robotic, with a very familiar face.
Timothy and his clones look up at it hopelessly. “Oh, shit tits.”
Meanwhile, in the other end of the casino, Skies has been falling down a dark tunnel for a handful of minutes. Finally, she grabs onto the wall with her clawed hand, stopping her descent, and strains to see a distant light far below. She jumps to the opposite wall, then back, and repeats, wall-jumping until the light is close enough for her to safely fall into it.
She lands in a cavernous, dimly lit chamber, filled with loader bots as far as the eye can see. Thankfully, they all appear to be deactivated.
“So this was Jack’s secret,” Skies muses, “a loader bot army. What a surprise.”
She climbs onto the shoulders of a nearby bot and looks around. “Now, where did Freddie go?”
Back in Pretty Boy’s office, Timothy cries out as he gets thrown against a wall and crashes onto the floor, gasping painfully. His clones shatter apart around him.
Before he can try to recover, a large mech hand picks him up and carries him across the room.
“You put up a formidable fight, Timmo,” Pretty Boy says, “but it was futile. You’re just lucky I can’t let anything happen to that handsome mug o’ yours.”
Timothy groans weakly in response as he’s placed on a platform atop of a control console. Red laser bars beam up around the platform, trapping him in a small, circular cell.
“You think...you think you’ve won?” Timothy croaks. “Even with Jack’s power, you can’t win. Jack himself lost. You won’t beat Skies and the Vault Hunters.”
“Are you a gambling man, Timmo?” Pretty Boy asks, “do you wanna bet on it?”
He types on the console and a light beams down from the ceiling of Timothy’s cell, scanning him. Pretty Boy laughs victoriously. “Look at this! With just your face, I have access to so many things I could only dream of before! Did you know, Jack was hiding a secret loader army in the very core of the casino? And now with your face, I can reactivate it!”
Timothy sits up in his cell and stares hopelessly at Pretty Boy as he giggles at the console.
“Oohoho, lookit this,” he chimes, “looks like your Vault Hunters friends just reached the Fabricator. They’ll have their hands full with that. But where is Skies...ah, there she is. Looks like she doesn’t have her ECHO communicator turned on. No problem. Let’s say hi, shall we?”
As Skies moves through the loader bot storage room, the main lights suddenly turn on, making her jump. She grips her pistol as she hears whirring and machinery coming to life. None of the loader bots have activated, but she can see on the distant walls, conveyor belts moving, hauling more loader bots.
“A factory?” she questions.
“I see a little ratch in my storage room,” a voice echoes out from the ceiling. “Looks like I need an exterminator.”
“Pretty Boy!” Skies barks.
“I can’t hear you, bodyguard, this intercom is one-way,” he says, “but I just wanted to let you know that I have Timothy, safe and sound. Well, not safe.”
“Give him back!” she shouts furiously.
“And with his handsome face,” Pretty Boy continues, “all of Jack’s old secrets are now mine, including his loader bot army! I hear you fight like a one-woman army. With Timmo’s face, and a push of a button, I can reactivate all of those bots you’re housed with. Can you fight off an actual army, all by yourself?”
Pretty Boy laughs viciously as Skies warily looks around at the hundreds- thousands- of surrounding bots, readying her assault rifle.
Back in the office, Timothy’s despair grows as he watches Pretty Boy. He knows Skies is tough, but even she has limits. She’ll never survive fighting off a whole army of loader bots all by herself. And here’s stupid, useless Tim, nothing but a tool to help bring about her destruction- the destruction of his best friend.
Timothy glares at the floor with frustration, tears pricking his eyes. The whole time they’ve been here, Skies has wanted nothing more than to keep him safe. And he can’t even try to do the same for her when she needs him.
He focuses on the surrounding laser bars, so hot just looking at them is enough to sear his eyes. An idea occurs and he scowls with steely determination. He will not let his face ruin Skies’ life the same way it ruined his.
Timothy grips his pants, squeezes his eyes shut, takes a deep breath, and headbutts the laser beams.
His agonizing cries echo around the office and through the intercom, startling Pretty Boy and Skies.
“No! What have you done!” Pretty Boy screams and shuts off the prison cell. Timothy tumbles out onto the floor, writhing and gripping his face. Pretty Boy rushes over to him but when he goes to touch him, Timothy lashes out and slaps the short man across his face.
Pretty Boy stumbles back and looks at Timothy with surprise, as he glares back at him through his fingers. “Never...again...”
“Tim!” Skies cries. She turns on her ECHO and shouts his name into it, but gets no response.
Skies pants as she remains frozen in place, her heart pounding painfully hard and her mind reeling with horrible scenarios of losing her best friend.

So drake is dragon and the Drakes are the last line of an ancient dragon clan that settled in Gotham, in fact the land Gotham is built on was part of their territory that they once allowed villagers to live in and let the government operate there in the same sense that a dragon would let humans deal with their problems among themselves because they're really just not interested so rather than rulers, dragons are more landowners -this bit of the world is theirs-, Janet and Jack married because they have a similar sense of 'treasure', that being ancient archaeology stuff so they go around, you know, but always returns to their den, that is Gotham Drake estate where they also keep their young, Tim, because usual adult habit of leaving their child with their treasure for utmost protection and so the kid can feel a sense of purpose/responsibility because they always tell him to protect their treasure, and Tim of course doesn't just include the estate because Gotham is his family's ancient grounds so little responsible (and bored) Timmy looks into human business, specifically look into their managers and of course the human protector that has claimed Gotham as his own -the people of Gotham, he means, he should really be careful with his words Tim thinks- and you know, since Tim is a responsible little Drake, he wants to be able to give his parents someone to account for, someone to be responsible to this mystery person's actions, just in case -and also he's just really bored- at this point Tim is just realising that his 'treasure' are answers.
Not just information, because those can be questions too, but answers, so Tim doesn't just stumble on something and note it down, he also chase after it, and for the most part his parents believe Gotham is safe because dragons' lives are connected to their treasures, that is why there are family ancestral treasures' like Gotham itself passed down the descendants together with their own treasures, because as long as either the land of Gotham is healthy or Tim has 'answers' he's nigh invulnerable. Dragons evolved just like humans, when they no longer need to be big to get food or defend their treasures, they've lost that. The most they'd retained from the really old ancestors that settled in this plane, is that his lifeline is connected to his treasure so as long that's fine, he'll heal ala Deadpool if in a slower rate. Or if he no longer has a treasure and becomes a wanderer, he looses that quirk and be as killable as humans but with a longer lifespan as long as he doesn't get stabbed first.
Tim figures out Batman's secret, tells his parents, gets a couple of ancient gold and rubbies, a pat on the head, and Janet and Jack shrug. They're not actually that interested in the humans that go around their land.
Drake Industries is really big on numerous types of preservations in this AU. Environmental preservation, animals preservation, plant preservation, and even has a medical branch that they oddly call human preservation (because humans are a part of the ecosystem and there's no worry of overpopulation here because there's enough people getting killed and leaving to curb that, whatever influx in population they have are just students/scholars who want to study in Gotham's really impressive science and will leave eventually after). Again, whatever politics the human population have are removed from them as long as the land isn't destroyed.
So how does Tim 'keep' his answers. As long as someone out there desires it, then it's counted as a treasure. It's his until he gives it away. Batman and Robin's identity becomes his main treasure. He never tells anyone this. If he tells Bruce or Dick, that's not counted as 'giving away' since they already know the answer.
Anyways, I'm not sure if I want him to be Robin in this AU, or just go the Spoiler & Asset AU route. I mean, if he does become Robin.... imagine how worse the betrayal is when Batman tells Spoiler his secret identity without asking his permission.
(Note: There is no such things as half-blood/ pure-blood dragon. If one of your parent is a dragon, then you're a dragon full on. You're a dragon or you're not. Their genes are persistent. The Drakes are just the last line in Gotham, not necessarily the whole world. There's not as much because treasures get destroyed a lot and many are caught as collateral in one or another universal crisis. Just because dragons on earth evolved into a similar shape as humans, doesn't mean dragons in other plains are the same. Tim can have a first cousin that look like your typical fantasy dragon and another an oriental one.
Tim has multiple vaults brimming with treasures of past ancestors. From really precious one of a kind books, to the purest metal and stones, to leaves shaped as hearts, to pure white mugs, because dragons are hoarders.)
