Tumblr media Tumblr media
it’s so obvious that tighnari likes you.
he is all smiles and sass whenever he’s with you, witty quips rolling off his tongue with ease in your presence. tighnari’s lips pull into a grin when you snap back at him with something equally as witty, always making him laugh into his hand. and, despite how much he tries to still it, his tail wags wildly when you laugh. he just thinks the sound of your laughter is precious, alright?
now, to any passer by, it’s so painfully obvious that he likes you. why else would he be taking trips into sumeru city everyday if not only to see you? cyno teases him all the time when he sees you two together, always making flirty gestures and a knowing look whenever you look away. and even collei, sweet and oblivious, asks tighnari about it. often things like why his tail was wagging so hard. or even why his ears perk up like that at just the mere mention of your name. the poor forest ranger can barely handle it, clutching onto his face or ears as his friends tease him.
was it really that obvious? he asked himself at night, hugging his pillow tightly. if cyno and collei know... then wouldn’t they know, too? tighnari clutches his pillow tighter, a pang of sadness hitting his heart.
then why haven’t they said anything about it?
unfortunately for tighnari, you are as completely oblivious to his feelings as he is to yours. it’s not at all that you don’t like him, though! you just... can be a little dense sometimes, and mistaking your enjoyment of being with him as purely platonic. and vise versa.
and nahida sees this as she strolls the streets of sumeru. she accidentally hears tighnari’s racing thoughts of overanalyzation of his words, how he holds himself, of tighnari in general when he is around you. and when she looks over to you, nahida is sad to hear many thoughts of self doubt.
sure, she had many projects waiting back for her in the akademiya. but surely something as trivial as getting you and tighnari together wouldn’t be too much?
and sure enough, it isn’t!
sending dreams to both you and tighnari helps bring you two closer together. sure, tighnari ends up waking up incredibly flustered after each one. even if it was just about you two hugging, tighnari using you as a pillow as he sleeps, or whatever simple and fluffy thing that entered his dreams. it definitely affects how he sees you, as he is incredibly nervous and awkward around you. he can’t even look you in the eyes now!
for a moment, nahida worries that she’s interfered too much. however, she notices how you, albeit shyly and hesitantly, begin to make some moves on tighnari. complimenting the small things he does, like how lovely his eyes look in the late evening as the sun sets. or how you teased him for how much his tail wagged whenever you said something kind. and the dendro archon rejoices when you ask him out to eat, even if it’s just a “simple dinner between friends.” she knows what you’re doing, and she’s quite proud.
some time later when it’s announced that the two of you finally started dating, nahida is in great spirits. she’s much more talkative and bubbly as she has meetings with the akademiya scholars, almost tempting her to throw a festival of love in celebration of your and tighnari. that is until she remembers that love is the tsaritsa’s domain. oh well.
Tumblr media
cyno is amazing at keepings his feelings from you hidden.
you’re a scholar at the akademiya, one that is often visited by the general mahamantra on the dendro archon’s behalf. whenever you two talk, he keeps his replies curt. he nods along to whatever you’re saying, sometimes interjecting something half-heartedly to the conversation, with a dazed look in his amber eyes. it worries you that you’re boring the general mahamantra, but cyno reassures you that he’s not. he’s just tired, that’s all.
so why does he always act tired? you think.
little do you know, cyno does like spending time with you. he enjoys visiting you everyday, whether or not nahida asks him to. he loves the little amounts of knowledge you share on a topic when he asks you. and he does like you, because how could he not? like, seriously? you’re you, one of the most talented, amazing, downright precious, attractive, and intelligent person he’s ever met. why would he not like you?
however, with his title, cyno makes a lot of enemies. it’s best for him not to involve you in any sort of danger. even if it’s a matter of your safety, it pains cyno so much when he sees your hurt expression when he pretends to disregard whatever you just said. he’s internally screaming at himself, desperately wishing he could just grab you and hug you so tightly that the hurt and pain he’s caused is squeezed out of you.
just as he thinks that, however, the sumeru archon accidentally pears into his thoughts when she passes you two by in the akademiya. she’s a little shocked that cyno felt that way about you, and even more shocked when she hears your cruel thoughts about yourself, going on and on about how cyno would never like someone like you. nahida smacks herself so hard on the head that it alerts cyno, which lets him leave swiftly to take care of the dendro archon.
but nahida doesn’t stop thinking about the two of you together, even whilst she’s in the middle of meetings or while she’s talking with cyno himself.
how could two people like each other so much but don’t know it? she asks herself.
finally, after enough pondering, nahida begins to plant the seed of her elaborate plan to get you two together. hopefully.
first, it starts with mentioning your name to cyno as he escorts her on a walk throughout sumeru city. she’s internally delighted to see a subtle smile form on his lips at the mere mention of your name, even if it disappears soon after he gives a vague description of you. but after enough prodding, nahida gets a genuine compliment about you from him. she smiles at the general mahamantra, and cyno is left wondering what is so amusing to her.
then, she sends sweet dreams to cyno of you. sweet days spent together, making breakfast for you while you’re still in bed, waking you up with a sweet kiss and an even sweeter greeting. making you laugh, or sometimes groan, at all the ridiculous jokes cyno has to offer. enough sweet moments with you that makes him wake up, craving for more of that sweetness, craving for your presence in his life once more.
eventually, cyno begins to lower his guard and warm up to you. it’s definitely something to grow used to, as you first thought it was all some cruel prank at your expanse. but once you realize that cyno’s nods and interjections in your conversations were now genuine and sweet, you began to warm up to him, too.
nahida was delighted when she saw you and cyno together, casually holding each other’s hands as you strolled through the marketplace. she’ll make sure to offer her congratulations to cyno later, right after she congratulates herself for such a success.
Tumblr media
haitham acts so casual and friendly that you would never think he’d like you back in that way.
he leans over the desk that separates you two, listening intently to whatever you’re talking about. although, his gaze does glaze over a few times and his eyes drop down more than once. you falter, slightly, but haitham is very quick to reassure you to continue, perking up and looking at you with genuine interest as a very subtle blush takes over his face.
please tell me they didn’t see me checking them out, haitham prayed, silently.
haitham thinks his crush on you is so obvious that he does everything in his power to not let anyone know, yourself included. and it’s not at all that haitham is ashamed of liking you. if anything, haitham wants nothing more than to show all of teyvat that he cares for you! he’s truly, madly, and deeply in love with you. however, he’s a little embarrassed at how quickly he fell for you. what if he comes on too strong and scares you away? what if you don’t feel the same way? what if you hate him and he didn’t realize it?
so, haitham wants to give himself some time before he asks you out, however long that may be.
and yet, haitham’s so well thought out facade is easily found out by nahida. all she needed to do was look at how earnest haitham looked at you as you two browsed the shelves of the akademiya’s library. but, just to make sure, nahida let your and haitham’s thoughts grace her. and she was delighted to discover that you both truly did care about each other, even letting out a small giggle. however, at the pace you two were going, haitham probably wouldn’t have asked you out until the hairs on his head were... greyer.
so, nahida sends some dreams haitham’s way.
he gets these tortuously sweet dreams about you. watching you over the top of his book as you read in the same room as him, more than content with just coexisting with him in the same space. sharing space with you in general, whether that be in the kitchen making food or laying down together on the couch. his personal space is now your personal space too, and haitham is more than content with that fact.
but when he wakes up, haitham is quite sad to find out it had all been a dream. a part of him craves for those moments so badly that he begins to plan out a confession.
nahida tries not to act too happy when she hears news of the scribe and you getting together. internally, she’s overjoyed and can’t wait to see your romance blossom further. however, externally, she gives haitham a smile whenever she sees you walking him to work, holding onto his hand as you wish him well at the akademiya.
maybe the dendro archon should try match making more often.

"to the silly encounter of fate that brought us together, forest watcher."
"to face perpetuity with you, young scholar"

1 . " Hello . "
"archons above, what is up with this forest?" you couldn't believe you were lost inside an endless maze-like lush forest no longer than an hour after arriving at the gates of a new nation. so much for the sky-high expectations for a new experience.
from left to right, up and down wherever you turned your sight, no sign leading to the place you were headed to was visible- not even a faint trace that looked anything similar to trails from people walking. you meddled with the wrinkled piece of note your mentor gave before you left at least ten times for the past hour. you scoffed at the tiny size and how it's almost ripped in half from how long it took for you to travel to this... still and unchanging forest seemingly in the middle of nowhere. besides, who writes "Gandharva Ville" on a piece of paper you could lose in less than a minute if you took your attention off it for one moment while traveling from one nation to another? clearly, your mentor didn't give a single crap regarding your journey to the actual research place you are supposed to stay at despite nagging your ear off about the etiquettes and reputation you were meant to uphold since you were “representing your entire nation”- her words, not yours.
while you were staring at the paper in your hand like it was supposed to transform into a seelie and guide your pathway, you suddenly realized twilight would fall soon. you'd have no one around, no source of direction, no light and perhaps worse. when you heard sounds of unknown animals squeaking and creaking somewhere to your right, you were reminded that this was a foreign nation and even more unfamiliar forest. definitely worse out there.
you've been wandering around for hours now, it was a miracle how you haven't seen a single wandering soul around, not even enemies. it all felt eerily unfamiliar, lost somewhere in a foreign forest. and so with more anxiety flooding your thoughts than the proper, logical measures you’d need to find your way through, you walked around for what felt like another few hours.
amidst the endless wandering, you finally saw something that could be a place of significance, maybe a landmark- a sight of a giant tree towering over everything around it.
in the light of the setting sun, the entire place looked marvelous, wildlife and plants prospering in harmony. when the sunray gently illuminated your skin, you finally had a moment for yourself to properly open your eyes and take in the beauty of your surroundings. dusk had painted the sky orange, scarlet and pink, even the clear air and gentle breeze looked like it was shimmering with the hues of sunset. a few verdant crystalflies fluttered around you, swiftly passing by and soaring to the skies- you had never seen such pretty green hued ones before. so this really was the land of dendro- you quietly pondered the obvious. lastly, traces and non-threatening (for now) sounds of wildlife brought quiet comfort to your anxious mind. hey, at least you weren’t wholly alone here.
you returned your attention to the huge tree from a cliff above, wondering which route you should take to check out the surroundings. maybe it was the halo-effect of the prettiest sunset you had ever seen, but when you focused on the tree longer, you realized it looked faintly similar to a fairytale book you used to read when you were a child.
"the tree of souls, a giant willow tree connected to all living beings around." you recited the familiar line under your breath, admiring how mighty the tree looked from above. was this the kind of giant willow tree the author was envisioning while writing the story? if so, you thought you could finally see the reason why everyone in the story seemed enchanted with its divinity and beauty.
maybe a prayer could work, like it does in that little book you used to read? as silly as that sounded, you closed your eyes, brought your hands together and spoke out loud.
"dear mighty tree of souls, please aid me in finding the "Gandhara Ville" today safely. i'm not sure how many wishes you offer to faraway-land visitors, but for today, just me finding my way would more than suffice. thank you." a warm forest breeze swept past you, pleasantly caressing your skin as it whirled away.
"on a second thought, maybe add a loving boyfriend too while you're at it." you thought to yourself, slightly giggling at the additional childish wish. after all, you used to pray day and night for a lover you'd share your life with. not that Tsaritsa ever provided you with that, though. ironic and slightly unfair, seeing how your god was technically the archon of love.
you were reminded of the need for you to move fast, so you intended on finding a way to at least make your way to the tree and climb up to see any sign of that mystery of a place you were to find.
well, until a small piece of... something dropped right on top of your head painfully with a loud thud.
you immediately clutched your head and groaned from the contact- what the hell? you glared at the tree next to you, trying to see where it came from. since it fell right on top of your head, it was probably from the branch above- you came close to cursing out, but you held back and sighed. so much for your luck in praying to your childhood fairytale tree.
"now what is this...?" what are the odds of a sturdy glass bottle labeled "dhayl oil" just dropping on your head out of nowhere? you picked it up and spun the small brown bottle around. nothing else was written on the sleek surface, the frosted glass body obscuring your vision to look clearly on what exactly was inside of it.
"what in the archons is dhayl, anyways?" you complained to yourself as you contemplated throwing the bottle down the cliff.
"that would mean "tail", indicating that the bottle you're holding right now is the oil i use on my tail." right after you raised your arm to toss the bottle down the cliff, a voice suddenly broke the silence. your eyes widened at the voice and turned around at the unexpected presence of another... person. he was shadowed behind the tree a bit, it was hard to see just what his... species were. you were quick to realize that this person had to be a hybrid though, from his mention of a tail of his own.
"plant-based oils are pretty complex to make, i'd appreciate it if you didn't throw my hard work off the cliff." when he approached you a bit, you finally confirmed your thought- this person in front of you was definitely a hybrid. you had never seen someone quite like him before, so you tried your best to examine his appearance as respectfully as possible without making it clear that you were gawking.
two large ears stood tall on his head, and a bushy tail behind that he mentioned. you narrowed your eyes a bit and tried your best to silence your thoughts but- holy crap this man was pretty. were all hybrids this pretty? though you didn’t remember reading anything about the mere identity of a hybrid enhancing your physical features.
"sorry, i didn't think it belonged to someone. it dropped onto my head above from the sky, i thought maybe it was a retribution from celestia." you managed to reply as normal while resisting the urge to roll your eyes. you remembered the thud sound it made when the hard glass bottle made contact with your skull. it still hurt, you managed to soothe the ache by rubbing it softly.
to your surprise, the man laughed lightheartedly at you. if he was keeping his distance from you first, maybe he had come to the conclusion that you weren't a threat. he came closer, standing right in front of you.
"you have a pretty big traveling bag. would you happen to be a part of the group of exchange scholars coming from different nations to sumeru?" ah, so he was aware of the program you came for. which means there was high possibly that-
"indeed, i am. are you a forest ranger, by any chance?" you finally felt relieved, running into someone local. maybe he knew the way to where you were supposed to have arrived approximately 5 hours ago.
"technically yes, a forest watcher to be precise." you narrowed your eyes in confusion, you admit you weren't an expert in sumeru's scholar titles and those who work for the Akademiya yet.
"it doesn't matter, i am a part of the crew, yes. you are correct on that." sensing your confusion, the man replied shortly. glancing at you up and down, he took out a small piece of note from his pouch.
"let's see, we have scholars to go to the Akademiya in branches researching the Akasha, the canned knowledge, historical runes and records, elemental incantation based charms, and elemental energy. which one of those are you assigned in? i'll find the location and find a forest ranger to accompany you safely there." the man checked his list again, then looked at you, expecting an answer.
"but i'm not here for the Akademiya." an awkward silence was shared for a few seconds before his ears perked up in realization.
"ah, so you're that one... peculiar person who majors in a different field, yet applied to train for botany." during your conversation, you barely managed to divert your attention away from his fluffy ears, unsure if it would be offensive to stare. you wanted to touch them so bad for some reason. you’d blame it on the fact that you had never seen a hybrid before but you had a feeling that wasn’t the only reason, it was just to reassure yourself that you weren’t the odd one here.
"you don't get scholars to botany often?" you held up the conversation despite your mind being flooded with his ears. were these fox ears? you wanted to ask. it had to be, it didn't look like cat or dog's. then again, you really weren’t familiar with manners regarding hybrids- the last thing you wanted to do was somehow offend your only chances of finding your way.
"botany, it does get an impressive number of students. it's just that most scholars choose Akademiya, not our base inside a foreign forest. they usually choose the safer option, unlike someone. highly peculiar indeed." you weren't clear if he was subtly making fun of your choice distinct from your major field, but his latter statement caught your attention.
"our base?" you tilted your head.
"you're headed to Gandharva Ville to experience first-hand botany and the forest ecosystem, correct? that is where we forest rangers live and work." your eyes lit up, finally with the realization that your small wish to that giant tree did come true after all. not to mention, with the help of this ... small bottle in your hand.
amidst your conversation, a memory of your mentor shouting at you about formalities of self introduction and its importance shot through your mind. wait, come to think of it-
"oh, now that i’m reminded... okay. hi, i'm (name), as you know i came here to study botany in relation to my field. i'm sorry for the late introduction." you finished your self introduction awkwardly . you thought of shaking his hand, but refrained once again due to not knowing the etiquette in a new nation and settling for a slight bow-down. perhaps they didn't shake hands here upon first encounter, judging from the way he isn't exactly offering you his hand either. he giggled a bit though, while you were unsure why.
"from the top, i see. hi there. i'm Tighnari, Forest Watcher of the Avidya Forest. my duty is to preserve both the rainforest's ecosystem and the safety of its visitors... that would include you as well, newbie scholar." he tilted his head a bit, looking at you straight in the eye with an amused glint in his amber eyes. wait- were they amber? you could’ve sworn you saw hints of green too.
"could i please ask you to escort me to your base? i've been lost for a while now, as you see..." you reached out to him to hand him the bottle of his "tail oil", whatever the purpose of that was. the forest watcher gratefully accepted his oil back and slipped it in his pocket securely with murmurs of thanks. his somewhat amused look never left his face, even though it was faint.
"that would technically be my duty, newbie scholar. can i help you with your bags?"

2. Mistakes and… Leafmark?
time passed by quickly ever since you came to the forest rangers' basement. every day you would get up, spend time revising and learning about the ecosystem in Avidya forest, sometimes go experience it first hand with the forest rangers in training, then report to Tighnari by briefing on what you learnt that day. it was somehow rigid of a routine but it never got too dull. forest life surprisingly fit well in your living preferences despite the slight hesitation you had before coming here.
tighnari surprised you in a way. you expected him to be a bit... different than he turned out to be. for starters, he didn't demand for you to submit a paper like your mentor did back home. it was trickier, he claimed that it was easier, and just that you had to simply visit him and prove to him through "civil, organized discussion" sessions that you've spent the day productively and learnt under his watch. unfortunately, tighnari himself is like a walking encyclopedia of every single plant, animals and who knows what more- known to teyvat. you were sure he didn't mean to be that condescending, but holy hell, was it intimidating at times when you failed to answer his questions. perhaps he was never aware, but he asked ridiculously precise questions often and would spend a long time bombarding you with information on the subject at hand. it was interesting, you admit but it turns out he was much, much more brilliant than you in somehow magically absorbing every ounce of facts he happens to encounter.
of course, you never exactly outright avoided his discussion sessions. but you had to admit that after a month and half being here, some of what you learnt would get mixed or carried on misunderstood until the forest watcher corrects you or somehow tricks you into answering incorrectly or doubting your answer until you're sure enough to not fall for his word-mazes. the worst part was when tighnari suddenly brings up a random mushroom you discussed 2 weeks ago for approximately a minute, then asks what environment it grows well in, what herbs it's best mixed with, and your own personal insight on how you intended to use it in connection to your field if he’s feeling particularly tricky that day.
it distressed you to no ends when you couldn't remember it as well as expected even if he has never, not even once discouraged or expressed disappointment in you. if anything, tighnari was an extraordinary mentor, always ready for questions, discussions and hands-on examination if you appeared interested enough. when you failed to answer correctly, he’d always nod with a soft hum, and explain from the top to ensure your correct perception on the topic. tighnari also always reassured you when you looked disappointed when you weren’t sure of the answer, claiming that mistakes are the key to success and that you should never be distressed or scared of him of answering incorrectly.
though you adore him, it still stresses you out when you fail to answer his questions to your capacity. you reminded yourself again, tighnari isn't doing this to spite you- he merely wants to make sure you spent a worthwhile period of learning under him. he has enough work on his hands to begin with, why would he bother to tease you? he awoke well hours before you do, then always remains in his office after you two's little sessions, goes through tons of paperwork, research and whatever else his duty calls for until ungodly hours. come to think of it, you've never seen him sleep before- one time you caught him still doing paperwork at 4am and when you asked if he wasn’t tired, he merely responded with a “fennec foxes tend to focus better during night hours”. in other words, he didn’t exactly deny being exhausted.
you were really concerned about him overworking himself, but you were frankly unsure if you were someone who could ask such things. sure, you two spent time together alone often, but most times, it was for academic purposes or obligatory meetings. (there were sometimes moments that existed outside of "most times", though.) so, there just wasn't any convincing reason as to why someone who barely has time to sleep would dedicate time for you.
except, maybe you were wrong- you thought today.
"less with the reciting, (name). dictionary definition-style precise answers are your expertise, i know by now. give me an example on what difference it makes if you squeeze the juice out of Rukkhashava Mushrooms in comparison to pressing it into powder for making first degree burn ointment." your eyes nearly fell out of your socket when you heard the mention of that specific type of mushroom- Rukkhashava? not because you barely remembered any academically beneficial facts about it, but because of a faint memory of you reading it was viewed as an important symbol connected to the Dendro Archon that struck your mind. you opened your mouth to declare that people couldn't possibly make ointments with those almost-celestial mushrooms, but then you hesitated.
your memory wasn't clear enough. what if you answered and if you were wrong? tighnari worded the question clearly, specifying the procedure and even mentioning what purpose ointment it was used for. perhaps you were wrong? why would he ask acutely like that if it wasn't even truly used in the medical field?
before you could mumble that you didn't know, the forest watcher sighed and lightly poked your forehead gently with a book. then poked you again. and again.
"what-" as soon as you opened your mouth to complain, he answered it before it even left your mouth.`
"you're going to end up with wrinkles, you know? i asked you a question about botany, not philosophy. no need to look so distraught as though finding path through afterlife." tighnari really tried to help you be comfortable with him and not view him as an absolute superior, but you often had trouble doing it his way. it wasn't how you learnt it back at home, after all. old habits die hard.
just like that, you were unknowingly furrowing your brows again. your forehead was met with the book again, tighnari gently pushing it as if to straighten your eyebrows and possibly prevent you from getting wrinkles or something of the sort.
"see, that's the face. i keep on telling you over and over to just relax in front of me. tell me what you were thinking of, i know you had something in mind just now." you're on the right track most of the times, anyways. he wanted to say, but held his tongue.
"i... seem to remember that those mushrooms you mentioned weren't exactly the normal species." you analyzed his face to see if there were any hints of positive or negative reaction. maybe he'd look pleased if you were right. except, his face remained completely blank as always, only gesturing you to continue. he was exceptional at keeping his poker face during these discussions, you had to give him that.
“go on.”
"...you know, with relation to the Dendro Archon and all? i seem to remember that it was a holy crystallization of the dendro god's legacy." you finally finished, slightly worried if your answer was correct. you distinctly remembered something along the lines, you were sure of it. and yet you couldn’t seem to be able to conceal the slight hesitation especially when you couldn’t grasp if you were right or not.
to your relief, tighnari retracted the book from your face softly, then smiled slightly.
"good job. i could tell you knew." your eyes widened in pleasant surprise, struggling not to beam at him in happiness.
"that's probably the biggest problem i want to help you fix, (name). you're never fully sure of yourself unless you are able to carbon-copy book definitions on a piece of paper. you have exquisite memory, excellent interpretation skills and everything a scholar needs to continue their path, but you lack confidence in your own self." tighnari crossed his arms, still maintaining unwavering eye contact with you. he was being serious about this, and you couldn't deny his words either.
"i- sorry, it's just... a habit. i'll try to avoid it from now on." you awkwardly meddled with your fingers from the sudden memory of tighnari complimenting your learning skills and wit just a minute ago. his praise wasn't something you heard often, it made you feel... content. happy, if you may.
"don't be afraid to make mistakes. it's all part of the learning process. i'll be by your side to help you out if you need." if you were feeling happy before, you'd say you were over the moon now.
"from now on, i want to give you a small assignment." your eyes snapped open and stared at your mentor. already? you had just finished an encouragement talk just now and he's already thinking of your next move. except, what he suggested was very different from what you expected.
"avoid using ambiguous words like "i seem to remember", "i think", and "i guess, i believe" when talking from now on. in front of me, for starters. that's your first assignment from me personally."
"that's... a rather curious assignment, mentor."
"pay no attention to the academic aspect. even in your daily life, you're to practice it until you're comfortable expressing your ideas without outright bringing voice of doubt to yourself." at the mention of this not being a purely academic program, your confusion doubled. tighnari crossed his arms and spoke again.
"i'll explain to you later if you want to know why it's important. but for now, let it remain a mundane assignment you just have to complete. is that clear?" you nodded as confidently as you could muster. at least that was a start.
"alright, you're dismissed for today. but before you leave," he paused for a while, then skimmed through his book as if searching for something.
"ah, here it is." he mumbled and brought the book towards you.
"i remembered that you were talking to collei about not having enough bookmark to use on the parts you found insightful. you see, if you press a leaf between dry sheets of paper, you can make an attractive and handy bookmark. i can't guarantee how sturdy it would be, but it's very pretty isn't it? i call them leafmarks." on the book page he showed you, was a beautiful fresh hue of light green, swirled with brown colored leaf-bookmark as he mentioned. it reminded you of his own unique eye color, almost identical in color palette.  there wasn't just one, he had many of those 'leafmarks' in various colors. you had the slight question if it was intentional that he seemingly picked out a specific one resembling his orbs, but decided not to get too ahead of yourself.
"you're giving them all to me?" you managed to ask, then took the hardcover book from his soft, warm hands. you barely even reacted to your skin touching his, too busy admiring how pretty the leafmarks all were. you even spotted a pink leafmark, you were positive you had never seen such mystic color of leaf before. although you didn’t seem to notice, tighnari’s hand softly shivered when they came in contact with your skin, seemingly lingering for no more than a second as his eyes softened at the pleasant sensation.
"indeed i am, young scholar. you clearly are enamored and need it more than i do." you smiled at your mentor's kindness, and bowed respectfully.
"thank you, thank you!" tighnari's eyes widened, then made a conflicted face- almost bordering an offended look at your rigid etiquette even when you were alone with him.
"i'd also appreciate it if you started treating me a bit normally."
"normally?" you questioned.
"i don't want to be regarded as your mentor back home. you and i are both equal scholars here." your eyes couldn't leave tighnari's face as he explained to you in detail.
"i just happen to have lived in sumeru all my life and my expertise is botany. that's the only reason why i know more than you for now. you came from a different nation, and on top of that you haven't even studied botany prior. you don't need to treat me like a superior, it’s unfair for you." the more time you spent with tighnari, you admired how down-to-earth he was. he was humble and warm, kind and responsible. he practically was the main guardian of the forest, yet remained the least arrogant person you've probably ever met. it was so... endearing in a sense, to see.
"...okay. thanks, tighnari. good night." you smiled, and left his office. tighnari, despite his best efforts to hide it, his ears perked up at the mention of his name. you pretended not to notice how happily his ears jumped and how he looked like he was fighting a small smile.
that was the first time you called him by his name, not titles.

3. about Tighnari - under his care
"are you acclimating to the rainforest? I suggest that you keep your eyes and ears open. take care of yourself, and if anything happens, just flag down a Forest Ranger." the unexpected question took you by slight surprise.
"asking if i'm getting used to the forest after 4 months is a bit too late, no?" you tilted your head in confusion.
"it never hurts to make sure. the forest isn't a playground and i'd hate for you to get hurt." ah, so he was merely concerned about you.
"by forest ranger, would that include you as well, mister forest watcher? i could call you chief watcher, even." you jokingly stated, teasing him as you do often.
"of course i'm included. i'm always willing to take care of you whenever you need me. just a call and i'll be there." he said these words in such a casual tone despite your slight playfulness, yet it brought immense comfort with a wave of warmth blooming in your chest. you were certain that he held no deeper meanings, his duty was to ensure the safety of the people and the ecosystem. still, it brought a smile on your face. maybe, a small corner of your heart wished that just maybe you wished it was more than that.
'whenever i need him, huh' you thought with a bashful smile you tried not to show.
"that's very assuring to hear, tighnari. thanks." you glanced outside to slyly hide the uncontrollable, giddy smile.
little did you notice the small dust of rose hue on the forest watcher's cheek, his ear hanging a little lower than normal. he couldn't take his eyes off you, even when you averted his gaze and stared out the window. he had gotten so used to having you in his office, it felt empty and cold the moment you left. and tighnari was no fool, he had a hunch on why exactly he seemed to have difficulty tearing his eyes off you, why he suddenly grooms his tail even more than before, why he hurries to finish his paperwork so he could have more time with you without worrying about them. he knows, but he chose to cast them aside for now.
for now, tighnari opted to just cough, and then avoid your eye contact for the rest of your conversation.

4. mornings with tighnari.
you signed up for this yourself, you bitterly mumbled. you did this to yourself when you deliberately found tighnari and offered your assistance first on your own free will, for the morning patrols. you barely even thought it over, or found no necessity to. it was so that you could see first-hand which plants were which instead of burying your head in the books to no end. on top of that, tighnari was possibly the most knowledgeable person in the area to educate you more if you had trouble with anything. he never looked irritated when you asked questions, and explained in great depth within the best of his capabilities. again, he was an excellent mentor, you were grateful you applied for the Avidya forest section, after all.
but despite your blatant admiration towards your mentor, morning patrols were not a part of your duties as an exchange scholar. it was your thirst for knowledge and perhaps, the slight warmth in your chest when you realized you could spend time alone with your mentor that brought you to your conclusion, of course. you tried hard to dismiss the second half of your reason though, even to yourself. you conveniently concealed your lingering thoughts and acclaimed it to be mere curiosity and fascination with the ecosystem.
unfortunately, you just weren’t expecting the forest to be this deep, with possibly millions of passages and places he was supposed to check. Avidya forest was big and vast, and circling it around to no corner unturned was certainly not written on your academic program before you left your hometown, neither did tighnari warn you about the insane amount of stamina necessity- not even half an hour and you were already struggling to keep up. you attempted to pretend like you weren’t on the edge of passing out behind tighnari, the desperate attempt at grasping your last shred of pride but you could’ve sworn he noticed your wobbly legs a while ago.
"we already went over this place, right?" you tried your best to sound like you weren't on the edge of collapsing out of breath, but of course nothing escaped tighnari's abnormally huge ears.
“revising the area. you’re that exhausted already? do you need time to catch your breath?” you weren’t sure if you had the leisure to comprehend his playful, teasing tone.
“just a moment… just a moment is all I ask.” you finally swallowed your pride and stopped in your tracks. you held onto a tree next to you, slightly crouching to catch your breath. but just before you plopped onto the incredibly soft-looking soil below, tighnari gestured you to wait for a while and went through his belongings in search of something.
after a short moment, he pulled out a mat. a thick, warm-looking one at that.
“sit on this, the ground is still moist from the morning dew. can’t have you catching cold now under my watch, can we, newbie scholar?” you slightly frowned at his peculiar choice of nickname even after several months, but you still opted to quietly accept the mat.
“isn’t this too small for the both of us?” you mumbled after setting it down on the ground.
“indeed it is. because it’s for you.” he stated like it was the most obvious truth in the world.
oh.
you suddenly found yourself conscious of your movements. is this even good manners, to receive your mentor’s mat and then proceed to sit on it alone? then again, you recalled the conversation back at his office. he said it himself clearly, he didn’t like unnecessary formalities between the two of you. you were sure tighnari would sigh and flick your forehead if you put up the formalities again.
well in that case…
“thank you so much, tighnari” you smiled and gratefully accepted his offer. when you finally relaxed on the ground, you sighed in relief. the mat he brought was as cozy as it looked, you loved how warm it was. Tighnari on the other hand, looked extremely pleased that you accepted his help without the frigid manners you seem to carry.
“it’s so warm, do you carry this with you every day when you patrol? must be heavy.” you noticed how thick the material was as you ran your fingers over the material.
“…not quite.” i only brought it because you were joining today- he held his tongue from adding unnecessary remarks. you hummed in acknowledgment and enjoyed the small break.
out of the blue, tighnari crouched down to your level, silently reaching out next to your sitting figure to straighten the wrinkled part of the mat below - when you hadn’t even realized it was wrinkled and messy. his sudden actions left you unintentionally staring in awe at his unfairly pretty face and kind gesture. when he suddenly leaned in to finally finish pulling the mat to be as comfortable as possible for you to sit on, he looked directly at you.
you prepared yourself for the playful snarky remark he always shot after correcting your mistakes, but this time he didn’t. when he finished fixing the mat for you, he just smiled at you warmly and stared at you without moving away. you mind seemed to freeze when you noticed how he still kept crouching to your level, his body in a slight close proximity.
suddenly, you were more nervous than you could’ve imagined from mere eye contact. after all, you weren’t sure if you’ve ever seen his face this up close before. his sunkissed healthy skin, brown eyes with prominent green hue swirling deep near his iris, and long lashes to compliment them. his hair seemed to be naturally straight, you'd never seen him prepare any oil of the sort like he grooms his tail. you huffed internally when you noticed how faintly pink his lips were, how was he this ethereal without trying? it really is unfair.
little did you know, he was having the exact same thoughts about you. his eyes seemed to silently observe the details on your face, pupils dilating slightly from the sight. the two of you looked into each other’s eyes one more time, then noticed on both ends, how heavy-tension the atmosphere was.
almost at the same time, you two looked away, your head dropping low to stare at the ground as tighnari swiftly averted his gaze sidewards.
thankfully, tighnari was the first to break the awkward silence, still crouched down to your level. something about him maintaining his stance was endearing, like he wanted to be closer to you despite his uncomfortable position- and who knows, maybe that was the truth. you silently hoped it was.
“listen! that’s the sound of morning dew dripping upon the leaves.” you blinked at the random remark he made. judging from his expression, he looked like he wasn’t making jokes, so you focused on hearing the oddly specific sound he mentioned out of the blue- of course to no avail.
"i don't have extraordinary hearing skills like someone, remember?" you squinted and tried your best to focus on the sound, whatever you could hear. unfortunately, all that graced your ears was the sound of leaves rustling from the calm breeze, and maybe the sound of sunrise if such thing even existed. it was no use, you had never heard dew droplets on the leaves before and was fairly positive that you never would be able to within capabilities of a human ear.
“i keep forgetting how unfortunately small your ears are. must be hard, unable to pick up pretty noises like these, hmm?” he diverted his attention to your ears, tilting his head and leaning in even closer to observe how different yours were in comparison to his own. your brows furrowed and you shot back playfully.
“excuse me, I seem to remember that you are a fennec fox, biologically programmed to have significantly higher sense of hearing. and my ears function normally as a human’s do anyways.” tighnari laughed, he always enjoyed getting on your nerves to an appropriate extent.
amidst your lively conversation, both of you noticed life slowly grow brighter inside Avidya forest. you couldn’t help but notice tighnari’s normally sharp eyes mellow at the sight of an ethereal sunrise. you stared at the rosy hue cast across the eternal sky, shining in its glory unapologetically. amidst the depth of Avidya forest, life awoke alongside the first shreds of sunlight. the strings of liveliness spread vastly from birds chirping giddily, some of the flower petals blooming as if awakening from slumber and curious sounds of the forest embraced the two of you.
and on top of that, you were equally busy admiring how endearing tighnari looked right now, his expression similar to a little boy who’s gotten a good night’s kiss on the forehead after his mother read his favorite bedtime story. the forest watcher looked peaceful, basking in the first rays of the day next to you. it was curious in a sense, surely he must enjoy this breathtaking view every day on patrol. yet, he looked as though he was the happiest one in teyvat at this very moment, like it was his first time experiencing such magnificent scenery.
an adoring smile made its way on your lips as you rested your chin on your hand. quietly, you continued to admire the side of tighnari you’d never seen before.
perhaps, under the glassy orange skies and glory of sunlight pouring on his skin, was your favorite sight of him thus far.

5. afternoons with tighnari.
“catching the chief watcher slack off, today must be my lucky day.” tighnari’s ears did a small twitch at the sound of your familiar voice.
“i’ll have you know i’m on my lunch break. there isn’t anything i’m slacking off on, young scholar.” tighnari replied as composed as ever despite the way his ears kept excitedly twitching even after he was long aware of your welcome presence.
“besides, during lunch breaks, I like to sit in a tree and admire the sunlight streaming through the canopy. though if I'm not careful, I'll fall asleep…” his unexpectedly cute concern and habit of admiring the forest like he doesn’t live here permanently tickled at your heartstrings. you bit back a smile when he immediately moved to make space next to himself while looking at your approaching figure with an expectant gaze. a small hummingbird flew past you two, making tighnari’s ears twitch again. no matter how many times you saw that, his ears and the twitches, reactions were quite endearing.
“you were already half asleep when i saw you, chief watcher” you giggled when he rolled his eyes at your accusation.
“well, since you’re sensitive to sounds, you could be a light sleeper to begin with, right? maybe resting for a while during lunchtime isn’t so bad.” you continued lightheartedly, your concerns over his health and overworking tendencies showing in your tone.
tighnari seemed to pick up on your caring tone when his brows raised slightly in pleasant surprise. to tighnari, someone taking care of him and not the vice versa was uncommon. he was known to be pretty much the foundation of the forest watchers, chief in almost every branches of what happens in Avidya forest- there was nothing going on in this forest where he wasn’t aware. and maybe because of his “status of authority” he so-badly despised, most people knew better than to pry on their superior’s personal life even if it was mere concern. for tighnari, the way you treated him and regarded him brought warmth and gratitude. and his feelings were clearly evident in his gaze directed to you, if you had the determination to open up your eyes.
“it’s amazing, really. seeing how much you care for the forest and ecosystem.” you mumbled absentmindedly while making your way next to him and sat down. almost immediately, you realized what he meant by the specific description of “sunlight streaming through the canopy.” it truly did look divine, Avidya forest always did.
tighnari wanted to answer with a sassy comeback to your words until he realized you were being serious and was currently looking at the tree and the sunlight with a big smile on your face. he didn’t even have the leisure to wonder how close you two were right now, you looked so peaceful, so… beautiful. he felt warmth spread in his chest as he looked at you being so comfortable around him, he quietly wished he could help you release your tension.
“it’s… expected for a forest watcher.” he barely managed to reply, keeping his gaze on you as discreetly as possible.
“except, it really isn’t. it takes a lot to appreciate the small things in life. you’re quite humble and down-to-earth, it’s refreshing really” you continued as you suddenly felt the urge to let him know just how wonderful company he was.
tighnari wasn’t one to blush and hide his face at compliments, especially from scholars under his care. well, let’s just say that you were an exception with the way he awkwardly coughed and pretended like he was wiping his mouth as his cheeks flushed rosy red.

6. a very good evening with tighnari.
“good evening! I'm preparing to go observe bioluminescent flora. want to come?” you jumped a bit from the unexpected voice coming from your door.
“tighnari!” you snapped your head to the direction, finally realizing that the intruder happened to be your mentor.
“did I startle you? I apologize, your door was open so I assumed.” tighnari mentioned. sure, your door was open but your original thought was to let fresh air in your room, not invite visitors. you admit that he wasn’t exactly unwelcome, though. tighnari was… different.
“are you in the mood for a stroll, young scholar?” your ears perked in interest as you met his eyes glinting with evident joy.
“bioluminescent flora glows every night, but their light is different this time of the year. the color changes, and they shine in an iridescent glow, almost. it’s very attractive for sightseeing.” his idea sounded absolutely beautiful, you nodded quickly in enthusiasm. besides, your mentor himself also looked unusually excited, he must be looking forward to looking at the floras probably even more than you were. his excitement brought a smile to your lips- his giddiness was highly contagious, it seems.
“oh, I’ll just quickly grab my memo. I expect today will be another day of extended learning from our chief watcher.” you giggled and quickly went through your desk in search of that one small memo you keep visible in case.
except, your search was hindered when you felt tighnari reach out and place his hand on yours softly and slightly hesitantly. your eyes widened at the featherlight soft touch slowly turning firmer until his fingers gently laced around yours. your mouth gaped slightly, then heat flushed your cheeks in realization and the possible implications of his intimate touch- your stare fixated on your linked hands.
one thing that unexpectedly calms your nerves down was when you realized his own hand was shaking slightly, indicating his nervousness. you were no exception, your breath hitched the moment you felt his skin on yours. it was made even worse when he turned your other hand around and proceeded to slip his fingers through yours, entwining them together, now both hands in his. the reassuring squeeze didn't help your racing heart one bit.
you remained positively speechless, unsure how you should even reciprocate, squeeze his hand? speak?
thankfully, he spoke first.
“it’s not… academic, (name). no memo-taking or learning. just… a stroll with me. is that okay?” tighnari couldn’t tear his eyes off you, he had never seen you look this endearing before even when he always found himself admiring you in silence discreetly to you. perhaps he enjoyed your stiff body language out of nervousness and your wandering eyes traveling everywhere but him far more than he assumed. who knew you could look this adorable flustered.
you finally realized his intentions clearly, still unable to take your eyes off your connected hands because you had a feeling you wouldn’t be able to look straight into his eyes without your heart threatening to leap out of your chest. you couldn’t deny the warmth you felt not only from his hand holding yours but also from how he keeps glancing at you for the slightest concern in case of your discomfort. his grip on your hand was nowhere near forceful, if anything it was tender and comforting, the way his hands wrapped around yours. you could easily pull away if you wanted, but you fought back a small smile as you squeezed his hand softly in response.
tighnari’s ears twitched in excitement.
so all along, you weren’t imagining his tenderness towards you. he felt warm and welcoming, you couldn't help but squeeze his hands again gently in response, biting the inside of your cheek in an attempt to control the growing smile.
"of course. should we go?" you mumbled, gaze still lingering on your hands in his.
neither of you spoke about your still-connected hand when you left your room, and it stayed that way throughout the entirety of the "stroll".
both of you quietly hoped that the linked hands would become a regular occurrence from now on.
7. home.
surely enough, holding hands had become a more regular occurrence after your small date observing the nocturnal flowers and bioluminescent flora that one warm evening. you also decided you would accompany tighnari every morning for patrol even though you barely manage to drag yourself out of bed when the sun wasn’t even out yet, but it was all worth it every time tighnari picked you up with a gentle smile on his face and sometimes tucked a small flower he grew himself in your hair. it had become an unspoken habit to patrol with your hand in his, basking in your warmth as well as make sure you didn’t stray too far. perhaps it was his inner protectiveness, perhaps it was his monogamous nature speaking but he silently knew he felt uneasy when you remained out of his sight for an extended amount of time. tighnari knew how deep his feelings had grown, and he found himself more and more infatuated with you as he spent time with you. the feeling was highly mutual, and you two felt more comfort in each other’s company in the comforting depths of Avidya forest.
come to think of it, your time in sumeru was limited from the moment you set foot into the lands. now, there wasn’t anyone on your trails that would kick you out of the borders should you extend your journey, and you were glad you hadn’t caused any trouble in sumeru as it would possibly make you the unfortunate candidate of general mahamatra cyno’s watch. tighnari seemed to be close friends with him, but from the way he not-so-subtly quizzed you of your intentions and studies you pursued like an interview, the awkward conversation intensified by his stone cold face with absolutely no hint of anything besides blankness. you couldn’t help but be reminded of how intimidated you were on your first encounter with him when you absentmindedly mentioned the occasion. tighnari had assured you with a quiet laugh that he was merely curious, and it made you quietly wonder how to not draw attention to yourself from now on. you couldn’t help but remember his awkward jokes he slipped in to potentially ease your tension but it might’ve had just the opposite effects. tighnari seemed pleasantly surprised and happy you and cyno seemed to be getting along as one of the two dearest people he held in his heart. you couldn’t help the slight hesitation if you actually were “getting along” but at least the general mahamatra seemed to care not to intimidate you too much. you suppose time would tell.
your mind returned to the peaceful silence you two shared at present, his thumb gently caressing the back of your hand as he kept a soft hold on them. you deeply enjoyed spending time with tighnari like this, but you couldn’t help but be reminded of your soon-to-leave plans every time at moments like right now. time was flowing fast especially now that you had found something- someone worth pursuing here in a foreign land. both of you were silently aware of the fact, and neither of you had the heart to bring it up just yet especially when the fresh start of a new relationship was so, so comforting and full of life.
you were resting your head on tighnari’s shoulder, sitting on the branch as you looked at the willow tree you two met under. you couldn’t believe how peaceful and right the world felt when you were with him, you never knew your life could be like… this. amidst the comforting atmosphere, tighnari softly broke the silence.
“(name)” his voice sounded quiet and somewhat unsure, a tone you scarcely ever heard him use. you looked at him in attention.
“yes?”
“i…” he spent a few seconds pondering on just how he could bring this up. just from his hesitance, you knew what he was thinking about, and it was perhaps the time to discuss the elephant in the room and hopefully get the slightly hefty conversation over with.
with a single sigh, tighnari stabilized his voice and looked at you.
“i think we need to discuss your time left here in your curriculum.” you bit the inside of your cheek at the expected, yet conflicting topic. it wasn’t as though you hadn’t thought about it before, it just demanded both of you to be present and willing to open your heart and opinions for you to come to a conclusion together. this tension perhaps was the reason why you seem to have been unconsciously avoiding this moment. with a soft sigh, you nodded softly in response.
“less than a month left, yes” you softly replied, your eyes still focused on the willow tree you met him under. in a way, the tree had granted both of your wish. but you don’t seem to remember asking for a loving boyfriend “forever” or anything of the sort. a boyfriend, yes. but the duration… maybe you should’ve added the time while you were at it.
before you could organize your thoughts and answer what your stance was, tighnari softly rested his head on your shoulder, gently wrapping his arms around your waist to draw your figure closer, to silence the slight hesitancy and worry of potentially being let down if you weren’t on the same page.
“i can’t ask you to leave behind your life at snezhnaya and accompany me at a foreign land… but at the same time, (name)...” tighnari laced his fingers with you close, the warmth of his hand radiating in your palm as his other arm was holding you tightly in his embrace, his breath softly hitting your neck.
“i… can’t just bid farewell and thank you for the memories. i didn’t start this relationship with you for lighthearted fun or for some teenage dream.” maybe you could have made a playful joke about neither of you being teenagers at his statement, but tighnari’s proximity, his protective embrace and his mellow voice echoing at the back of your mind, you couldn’t help but softly pat his head as he hugged you tight.
“i’m not with you just for the thrill, dear.” you replied quietly, resting your cheek on the top of his head. tighnari seemed to let out a slightly shaky breath, an indication of relaxation when he finally got the confirmation he desperately needed from you. that he wasn’t the only one completely infatuated with you.
“are you aware… of what we are? what we would become, and if you’re ready, if you’re sure?”
“I-” you opened your mouth to respond, then closed it to give him time to express his worries.
“fennec foxes mate for life, (name). our kind is highly monogamous and i… have to warn you about it before our relationship progresses more than it already has. we aren’t as flexible as some humans prefer.” his soft voice cooed, his somewhat stern tone silently reminding you to listen carefully and give this matter a serious thought. you blinked and finally realized the reason why he was unusually clingy and vulnerable than usual, so he truly couldn’t let you go.
a small, loving smile appeared on your lips as you snuggled closer to him, still running your fingers through his hair and sometimes gently playing with his ears, making him sigh in comfort.
“what i mean to say is… you need to have your mind set. i take you very seriously, much more than you may think at this early stage of our bond.”
“... dear…” you softly whispered and held his cheeks with both your hands, carefully lifting him up from your shoulder to meet his gaze. he truly looked lovestruck, his eyes glistened with tender care, devotion and affection all directed to you, and the sight made your chest warm up in overflowing love.
“tighnari, i don’t regard our relationship in a light manner. i don’t see you as someone less than my partner for life. i take us… very seriously too.” tighnari could’ve sworn he fell in love with you all over again, finally getting your final answer he desperately needed to hear. he loved you, loved you too much to let you go, loved you too much not to cling onto you tight and keep you with him, to care for you. yet, he always had the voice nagging to him about how humans weren’t like him, that you could walk away any time, that humans weren’t as devoted as his kind. and just like that, all of his worries seem to melt away at your soothing, promising words that you whispered.
“you wouldn’t be asking me to leave behind my life at snezhnaya because i won’t. i’m a scholar here and a scholar back home, and sumeru is the land of wisdom, no?’ tighnari’s ears twitched and perked up beyond control at your positive implication of words.
“you mean…”
“i wouldn’t be throwing away anything to start with, tighnari. i’ll just be moving onto a new lifestyle. change to my environment. you aren’t asking me to abandon anything, please don’t worry. i’m choosing…” you suddenly halted mid-sentence at your cheesy words, looking away from his eyes to seem as normal as possible.
“i’m choosing… you. on my own will. you aren’t making me do anything.” and with that final confirmation, tighnari all but leapt to embrace you tightly. his hand wrapped around your shoulders, holding the back of your head as he pressed your face into his shoulder. he held you like you meant the world to him, pressing soft kisses on your forehead as he happily caressed the back of your head comfortingly.
“thank you, thank you… thank you, love…” your face heated up from how he repeated the words, pressing loving kisses all over your face after he pulled away. your lips connected softly, his hands gently holding your face like you were the light of his world, the reason for his existence. you were, from now on to him- his one and only. you smiled into the gentle kiss, placing your hands on his shoulder, tilting your head to move your lips in sync to his sugarsweet kiss. tighnari’s hold on your face was so, so tender, his thumb caressed your cheek ever so softly as your kiss prolonged, the warm rays of the evening sun wrapping you both in its cozy heat.
you pulled away, smiling at tighnari as he still held your cheeks. you couldn’t help but lean into his hand, placing your own over his.
“i love you… i love you so much” tighnari couldn’t take his eyes off of you, you looked perfect right now, the golden sun pouring on your skin, your cheeks heating up in his palm from fluster, and the relaxed smile on your lips- the enchanted, lovestruck glint in your gaze as you two looked into each other’s eyes. you were always beautiful to him, but you truly did look absolutely breathtaking when you were in his arms, just where you belong.
with another soft gentle kiss to your forehead and your soft laughter echoing through Avidya forest, even the sunsets seemed to embrace the young couple hopelessly in love, letting them bask in its ethereal glow.
finale.

Tumblr media
he’d first seen you before you’d even considered the amurta darshan. you were obsessed with nature; all the fauna and flora that there physically could be. you spent so much of your time studying in the avidya forest, it wasn’t particularly rare for tighnari to stumble across you while he was doing his patrols. in fact, you were becoming a highlight of his patrols. tighnari couldn’t help but flatten his ears to his head when he turns the corner and you aren’t sat under the same usual tree you always were. the next day you’d be sure to be there, apologising profusely to the fox as he’d became just as much a part of your routine as you had his.
you found him fascinating, albeit maybe perhaps of his ears and the fluffy tail that protudes from his lower back but also because whenever he stumbled upon you, he was keen to speak to you about your studies. he was like a walking encyclopedia and you loved it. if there was a mushroom variant you wasn’t particularly strong on, you could guarantee tighnari was. after a few meetings with him, you started to purposefully sit in spots that you knew was on at least one of his patrols. you was hoping he’d never noticed.
meeting almost daily, the two of you realised you’d never exchanged your names. you always referred to him as ‘the fox’ to your friends at the akademiya and tighnari would refer to you as “the student” to the forest rangers at gandharva ville.
“beautiful day for studying,” the familiar voice mused in a playful tone, causing your head to shoot up from your books, “what’s the topic today?”
a smile graced your lips at his arrival, his ears perked and tail swaying in the breeze. your eyes drifted down to the books surrounding you, especially the one on your lap. your smile turned sheepish, letting a little laugh out.
“actually, i’m preparing my first thesis - i chose my darshan the other day and i’ve been up to my head in classes since.” you sighed loudly and perhaps a little dramatically. tighnari quirked a brow, one of his ears twitching in curiousity; so that’s where you had been these past few days.
“oh? congratulations, that’s a big achievement,” he grinned, finding himself sitting in front of you on the grass, “which darshan did you choose?”
your cheeks flushed with heat that you blamed on the sumeru heat but it clearly wasn’t the reason. you averted your gaze from tighnari embarassedly, clearing your throat. you were officially fully aware that tighnari was an alumni of the amurta darshan, he was still the talk of the school with them referencing his works. he’s your elder now officially and that made him slightly more intimidating.
“o-oh - uh,” your obvious shift in mood made a smile crack at tighnari’s lips. he knew exactly what darshan you’d choose from the moment he met you, “i’m officially an amurta student.”
you announced it with an ounce of pride, lifting your chin high to which amused tighnari. he wasn’t stupid - not that you’d ever claim him as such. he just wanted you to hear you say it himself, his ears tingling at the words.
“i knew the answer. i just wanted to hear you say it,” he chuckled, running his fingers through his tail fur as you stared at him, flabbergasted, “did you truly think i’d help your studies in the avidya forest’s specific flora if you were going to run off to any other darshan?”
he found the sheer embarassment on your face funny but he wouldn’t voice it right now, it’d only make your fever and racing pulse worse and he didn’t want to carry you back to gandharva ville with all of your books.
“well…” your voice trailed off, fingers nimbly fidgeting with the pages before you. you huffed a little, your stubbornness coming through as tighnari looked down at you proudly. you avoided the eye contact but tighnari didn’t mind.
“can i ask for your name now?” he hummed, his question causing you to finally give him your completely undivided attention. you felt yourself starting to smile again. unbeknownst to you, he found your smile contagious and within seconds, tighnari was also smiling.
“y/n.”

“y/n never wants to study with us anymore,” your friend poked your shoulder, the voice teasing as the rest of your friend group laughed, “we’ve been replaced!”
she dramatically threw her head back, the back of her wrist to her forehead in an “oh the agony!” moment. you rolled your eyes promptly, continuing to study from tighnari’s notes he had given you.
“when do we get to meet the lucky man?” another friend perked up, causing you to choke on oxygen momentarily. you sent a death glare across the table at him.
“there is no lucky man - it’s just more peaceful to study in the avidya forest than listen to dumb and dumber over there bicker all the time.” you nodded your head to the twin siblings, sat looking ever-so-innocent. they couldn’t fool an archon though, all they have ever done is cause mischief and chaos for everyone.
the truth is tighnari had started invited you to gandharva ville. as sumeru entered winter, the avidya forest was prone to less humid thunderstorms and more simple rainstorms with a freezing temperature. he would hate to see you get caught in one at random and freeze to death so why not come sit in his hut? at first it was mildly awkward. tighnari would sit over his desk, grinding up herbs and plants for remedies and incantations while you studied, the hut almost deadly silent other than the sound of a wooden mortar and pestle in tighnari’s gloved hands.
you wouldn’t admit it, especially not to your friend group but you spent a lot of your so-called ‘studying’ watching tighnari. you would watch the way his tail swayed in a rhythm, his hands working meticulously on a remedy that he had recently ran out of - or perhaps he was marking collei’s homework for the week and his ear was twitching occasionally. you loved the way he’d reach up and rub his ear, pulling it down sometimes as if he was grooming it.
tighnari would chuckle to himself as he watched you leave gandharva ville, your books hugged to your chest. he knew you were unaware but he knew perfectly well that you was watching him during your time in his hut. he figured you’d understand his kind well enough considering your intricate knowledge of fauna but he perhaps underestimated how much you knew on foxes. this is exactly why he’d cunningly got you researching and studying foxes, a cheeky smile on his face as he’d passed you his notes on his kind that you accepted happily.
the more your eyes scanned the yellowed pages, the more you realised exactly what he was putting you through. the characteristics of bushy tails, big ears and superb senses… it was all tighnari. the words all began to drown out your friend group’s quarrelling at the table. your tongue poked the inner of your cheek, holding back a smile at the thought that tighnari had done this on purpose. closing his notes, you began gathering your belongings with a new found urgency to speak to him.
︵‿︵‿୨♡୧‿︵‿︵
gandharva ville was ever busy on its feet, forest rangers rendezvousing at previously confirmed locations before they set out on their patrols for the day and the odd scholar scratching down notes into their parchment. despite the weather being beautiful and just the right temperature, you couldn’t spot the one person you was looking for. the occasional forest ranger would greet you as you passed, wide grins on their faces as they recognised you. you’d politely smile back, continuing towards tighnari’s hut.
but behind the leafy curtain, there was no forest watcher you were searching for. your brows knitted in concern, finding yourself frowning as you glanced over his belongings. he didn’t usually patrol at this time of day - in fact, this was usually the time of the day he’d be discussing collei’s studies with her.
“y/n?” the melodic hum of the young girl drifted from behind you, waltzing you around on your heels to meet eyes with her, “if you’re looking for master tighnari, he recently left to deal with a withering zone just north of gandharva ville.”
“alone?” you quirked a brow as she nodded. that sounds incredibly stupid of him, you think as you bid farewell to collei and began walking to where tighnari should ultimately be. you had stayed clear of withering zones, always sticking to the paths when traversing through the avidya forest and it was always because of the warnings tighnari would reprimand you with.
hugging the top layer of your student robes closer to your body, you couldn’t help but feel a sudden chill amongst the air. a sudden rainstorm? surely not. you frowned, catching sight of some dark fur on a nearby branch. your fingers plucked at it, holding it up to confirm that it belonged to the man you’d been searching for. was he in danger? you looked around, scanning the area for any more hints or signs that tighnari was here.
you took notice to how dry the grass was, crunching beneath your every step as you clutched tighnari’s fur in your fist. there was the sound of a bow amongst the darkness, followed by the occasional groan and frustrated grunt. a silence followed. it was like warmth washed over you, bringing over a fever as humidity returned to the area and the grass coloured lush green, the flowers flourishing once more. had that been a withering zone?
in the distance there sat a figure on the grass, shoulders hunched and defeated. his ears were flattened, bloody hands hugging his tail close.
“tighnari?” you whispered. his ears lifted, perked as you hurried over to the male, “are you okay?”
he smiled, grimacing somewhat as his gaze finds your worried eyes. he raised a hand, waving you off as you start searching his body in attempt to find where the blood came from. it certainly wasn’t from the terrors that lurk in withering zones which could only mean tighnari was injured. tighnari’s tail twitched in his hands, awkwardly looking away from you.
“it’s just a scratch, i promise y/n,” he chuckled meekly, clearing his throat as he scanned the surroundings, “although, could you help me back to gandharva ville? it certainly isn’t safe to stick around in the wild with the scent of blood.”
and so you lifted the male up, wrapping one of his arms around your shoulders as you both stumbled back to gandharva ville in the most ungraceful manner possible. the height difference between the two of you most definitely did not help. he’d been out long enough now that gandharva ville was basically empty - people were sleeping by now and you’d narrowly avoided the night patrols. you could feel tighnari’s muscles relax when he realised he could make it to his hut without people seeing him in such a fragile state; hell, it was killing him to allow you to see him like this.
tighnari was quick to settle onto his bed, groaning out as he finally let his tail drop and you could catch the gash he had on his side. you scowled, surveying his hut that you had been in many a time now. you figured you’d know it well enough, wandering subconsciously to his desk. tighnari watched, a little perplexed at what you could possibly want by his desk but he watched you tiptoe, fingertips dancing and gripping at a vial of cream on one of the highest shelves. your spare hand was holding your weight up against his desk and tighnari swallowed the lump in his throat.
he wasn’t sure what he found more attractive in the moment, your stubborn attitude unwilling to ask for his help reaching for something or the fact you’d just grabbed the correct vial from the numerous ones on his shelves. he hadn’t even taught you about any of them let alone include you in his remedies.
“how did you know which vial-” you cut him off with a laugh, helping him shrug off his cloak so you could look closer at the wound he’d acquired from being so stupidly bold into thinking he could handle all these withering zones alone.
“i usually end up watching you work when i’m here studying,” you mused but you were embarassed to admit it to him directly, “i remember the time a forest ranger came in with an injury on their calf, you used this one - i can’t forget it because the vial is so pretty.”
tighnari hummed, chuckling despite it hurting him. you shot a glance up at his face to catch him already looking at you as you applied the cream. you was about to question what made him laugh - perhaps a little defensively as you’d just let out some considerably embarassing information but tighnari spoke first.
“you’re just like collei.” tighnari said no more and you decided not to press on the matter if it meant you got to avoid talking about how you watched him. you dressed his wound in a bandage, fingers working ever-so-gently to avoid hurting the fox.
︵‿︵‿୨♡୧‿︵‿︵
“i’d rather kiss fungi.” collei puffed her cheeks, her lips pouted as you laughed at her response. you’d pulled her to sumeru city for the day with tighnari’s permission. collei couldn’t contain her excitement but she was a little hesistant on the matter, unsure if she should spend time away from her studies. you assured her that one day wouldn’t halt her progress forever and you even promised to teach her some things on the way back to gandharva ville, as her senior of course.
“why not? i thought he was pretty cute.” you giggled, raising your drink to your lips as you tapped your fingers on the table, looking around at the bustling streets of sumeru city for another possible suitor for collei.
“like how you find master tighnari cute?” her question threw you off guard, your eyes widening and the drumming of your fingers suddenly stopping. collei’s smile turned into a tight, smug grin that had you glaring in her direction.
“who says i find tighnari cute?” you huffed, letting out of a dramatic sigh - with sounds included, “kids these days.”
collei simply wouldn’t drop her grin however as she watched the way you looked away sheepishly, the tip of your nose dusted a rosey hue of pink. you were pouting your lips ever-so-slightly and your eyes wouldn’t stay locked on one thing for more than a few seconds. you could deny it all you liked but collei knew otherwise. she had been in master tighnari’s hut while you were also there studying, she hadn’t missed how you sneaked glances in his direction while he questioned her on her homework.
“collei?” a male voice chirped up, oddly a little familiar to you as you both turned in his direction, “tighnari let you leave gandharva ville?”
“oh! mister cyno!” collei beamed at the general mahamatra, leaving you even more flustered than you’d been before, “aha, yes he did - on terms that y/n teaches me too.”
cyno’s gaze flickers to you and you hold your breath, he was incredibly intimidating to you. you’d seen him multiple times around the akademiya on the way to your classes and all you could ever think was how you didn’t want to end up on the bad side of his polearm. yet collei knows him and even more so, he knows tighnari. he catches on to how stiff you’ve turned in his presence but his gaze only softens minorly. so this is the girl that tighnari will not stop yapping about in his letters? he isn’t surprised at all. he’s spent many nights drinking with tighnari and he’s heard the intoxicated ramble about tighnari’s quote-on-quote ‘ideal type’ more times than he can count his genius invocation tcg wins - you fit the ramble perfectly.
“so this is y/n.” cyno hummed, wondering if he could stir tighnari’s awful babbling even more by involving you. you quirked a brow but nodded regardless.
“it’s a pleasure to finally speak to you, general - i mean, i see you around the akademiya sometimes.” your words slowly turned into a mumble, scoffing mentally at how you struggle with social situations like these. especially when the focus was on you.
“when you’re actually there,” collei pokes with a teasing tone, “you spend more time in gandharva ville i swear.”
︵‿︵‿୨♡୧‿︵‿︵
you had expected all the days and nights writing theses to take its toll on your body but not like this, you sighed as you sprawled out on your bed. your whole body ached as if you had studied yourself to death but today you had submitted your final thesis - the one that determined everything about your time at the akademiya. you’d spent countless all-nighters in the house of daena, buried in books that you could barely skim through with your current attention span.
you simply wanted to sleep for months, perhaps years however that would not be wise if you were about to assume position as a scholar. you’d worked so hard for this, it’d be wrong to suddenly hibernate your life away in celebration of it. despite your mild joy at the situation, you couldn’t bring yourself to celebrate. your body simply would not move, lacking energy you’d have any other day. as much as you wanted to celebrate, you wanted to see tighnari and tell him about your final thesis more.
it had been months since you’d visited gandharva ville and with tighnari’s lack of presence outside of the avidya forest, you hadn’t ran into the fox at all. your fingers twitched suddenly, as if craving the male’s company. you scowled, turning your head to admire the night sky outside of your window. he most likely wouldn’t even be awake right now even if you did drag your sorry ass out of bed but it had been too long since you walked barefoot along the grass on your way ro gandharva ville, basking in the sounds of nature.
you didn’t truly grasp how much you’d missed these minor feelings until you was doing them again, retracing your steps to the familiarity of gandharva ville. fireflies danced in the clammy air of sumeru’s night, summer barely around the corner as temperatures began to rise again. you hadn’t even reached gandharva ville when you landed sight on someone amongst the leafy greens of the avidya forest and he too noticed you. there was a flush of warmth running through your blood like a spur of energy, heart racing at the sight of him again. there was no conscious decision as you ran towards him, grinning at the sound of his laugh as he hugged you tight, the two of you almost toppling over at the force of your hug.
“well look who it is,” tighnari teased, a hand on his hip as you awkwardly separated from the hug, “isn’t it amurta’s newest scholar?”
“how did you know?” you tilted your head, watching how his ears twitched and lowered slightly.
“did you forget that i know cyno?” he hummed and suddenly you remembered well enough, “not only that but disappearing for months? i could only assume you were in the stages of your final thesis.”
tighnari would not admit it to you but the past few months had been nothing but living hell on him. he craved your presence daily, still checking every spot you had been known to perch at on his daily patrols - even going as far as taking both the morning and evening patrols in hopes of seeing you. he knew you could just as easily turn up at his hut but he figured you’d spend your time in a much quieter spot like the ones he met you at but he never found you. there was never even a sign that you had been there.
so he began desperately writing to cyno about you, asking if he’d seen you around the akademiya by pure chance. tighnari couldn’t bear the idea that something awfully had happened to you even though he knew you had studies to prioritise. something could have happened to your family, anything. he had to be reasonable. little did tighnari know, cyno had already been keeping his watchful gaze on you from across the house of daena or puspa cafe. he kept his eye on how you’d work yourself to death to finish your final thesis - he kept those details to himself however. tighnari was becoming an avid worrier about you, fidgety at even the slightest mentions about you. the least he could do was hold his tongue on things he knew would spiral tighnari completely out of control.
“i definitely did not forget that you knew cyno.” you muttered, looking down at the ground between the two of you. tighnari’s tail swished in amusement. of course you’d forgotten when you had so much studying on your hands.
tighnari wouldn’t know how painful the months were for you, on the other hand. he wouldn’t know how you piled yourself in books only to lose focus the second you pulled apart the pages. the text looked nothing like his handwriting, you’d think, slamming it shut in a futile attempt at keeping tighnari alive in your memory. if you could focus on a book for more than a few words then it wouldn’t be long before your thoughts drifted away, daydreaming of a much simpler time when you would sit on the grass with tighnari and bask in the sunlight.
you thought back to the times he’d mentor you - except he never liked to call it that because he never wanted to take the role of your mentor. you recalled all the patrols you’d tagged along on, your feet aching but you couldn’t care less as long as you had tighnari with you. all so you could watch his tail wag as you walked, his ears turning at the slightest of noises. he was always so aware, ensuring he never got you into danger once. because what would tighnari do if you’d got hurt under his protection? he couldn’t grasp how guilty he’d feel at the mere thought of it.
the silence between you both was deafening other than the small huffs of breath you took from your run to him. tighnari’s sweaty hands clenched the fabric of his cloak just as you played with the hem of your skirt, the two of you blurting out “i missed you” at the same moment. taken back, the two of you let out nervous laughs.
“y/n can i be honest with you?” tighnari asked in light of the situation. you nodded, the rate your heart was going at could break your ribcage, “i really like you - and i want something with you but-”
“foxes mate for life and that’s a big commitment for a human?” you finished his words, a lump in your throat as tighnari’s eyes met yours. he looked bewildered, brows knitting.
“yeah… i- how did you know?” he stumbled his words a little. you hadn’t exactly rejected him so he couldn’t feel down at the bottom but his ears flattened in worry that you caught onto quickly.
“i borrowed your notes once and you’d left that specific part highlighted unlike the rest,” you studied him just as much as you studied his works, you mused to yourself, “i really like you too, nari.”
he didn’t know which part in particular had made his ears perk up as quick as they did or made his tail wag as if it was caught in a windstorm but he admired you more than he had ever done before - not only that but you called him by his nickname. not tighnari and certainly not master tighnari as collei had once got you to jokingly call him but nari. your face met the material of his clothing once more as he pulled you back into his chest, his arms tight around you. he buried his face into your soft hair, drowning himself in your familiar scent that he’d been longing for so long.
at that moment, tighnari couldn’t care about the rustles of nearby bushes or the splashes of a frog leaping through a puddle not far from your feet. he simply cared about your touch and warmth at his fingertips.
︵‿︵‿୨♡୧‿︵‿︵
you hummed, tapping your pen against your lips as you re-read the text in front of you again. it must have been the fifth time you had read the same sentence but it wasn’t quite sticking. you were growing frustrated, after all this particular textbook was key to your ongoing research into the origins and scientific families of the kalpalata lotus.
“i can almost hear the cogs turning in your head.” his voice chimed as the leafy curtain of his hut lifted, the fox stepping out into the sunlight with a wide arm stretch. you’d risen early to accompany collei and some forest rangers on a patrol in tighnari’s place, letting him sleep longer than he usually gets. after the patrol was over, you’d opted for sitting outside his hut with your studies instead of hovering over his desk.
“can your brilliant hearing read this damn sentence for me?” you replied with sass, too tired for his taunting this early in the morning. tighnari chuckled, brushing your hair back with his hand before he placed a kiss to your forehead.
“it’s not even midday and you’re like a boiling pot of water on a stove, dear.” tighnari could tease you all day if it was permitted but he knew your boundaries. you sighed, exasperated as you realised you’d began to overwork yourself again. the pen you was holding found its way onto your parchment and tighnari’s lips curled into a smile as you wrapped your arms around his waist.
“you know, i could always do with a research partner.” you mumbled into his stomach. tighnari raised a brow, running his hand through your hair.
“is this your way of inviting me to do a research project with you?” you nodded wordlessly in response to his question, listening to his hum as he pretended to debate your offer, “i don’t see why not. not many scholars get to say they’ve released work with their partners, after all.”

୨୧ Unspoken Feelings of a Matra
Tumblr media
“ a certain someone has caught the eye of general cyno without even trying… “
ft. cyno x gn!reader
cw: fluff, mutual pining, cyno is sickly in love w you (same energy as a schoolgirl crush), wingman tighnari!!!!!!, bullet point notes, wrote this while brainrotting, not proofread
Tumblr media
>> 🍁 kazuha's musings : ty to @seveninchesfrominsanity for brainrotting with me about this… cyno is such a dork ugh I love him he’s great. also I hope it’s alr I included the concept that Collei has a bunch of romance novels!!! It’s such a funny and cute idea it was hard not to mention it somehow. I always seem to be spilling paragraphs when it’s about Cyno
Tumblr media
Cyno vividly remembers the first day he met you, which was when he had to confront you about the recent case of a group of Akademiya students smuggling canned knowledge and illegally selling them to certain classmates of yours. Right away he knew something was… Off about you, different. Back then he couldn’t put his finger on it, already too focused on the issue at hand to delve into the reasoning behind the way his mind felt more at ease simply by your presence.
You looked fairly unfazed when Cyno walked over to you with the same stoic look on his face, carrying that intense aura around him wherever he went. All you greeted him was a polite smile that he could tell wasn’t forced, not one bit. Your overall presence and conversation that somehow slowly turned more relaxed thanks to you put Cyno at ease—even if it was only slightly.
When you became acquainted, Cyno would have just called you ordinary. An ordinary Akademiya student who hadn’t even heard about knowledge capsules being spread around until Cyno had inquired you about it—him being fairly surprised when you insisted to Celestia and back with helping him with investigating; as you were quite agitated by students who seemed to take their time at the almighty Akademiya for granted. Now, he wouldn’t say it out loud but there would be much, much more he’d have to say about you…
He shouldn’t dwell too much on the details, though. In the end, you ended up helping him out and getting your hands on leads that he probably wouldn’t have been able to obtain if this was a one-man operation. From that day forward, you’d be happy to call the matra one of your friends and he would as well. Surprisingly Cyno had found himself running into you quite often; at some point he would’ve just thought wherever he was you probably weren’t too far off.
One day, Cyno decided he should test one of his latest jokes on you—one that had been brewing in his mind for at least a week or so. He normally told jokes as to “lighten the mood”, but you already seemed to act natural around him. It’s alright, he might as well take this opportunity to stop pestering Tighnari with his latest material and, if he was lucky enough, to strengthen your bond at the same time.
Once he had told the joke, the last thing he was expecting was watching your face break out into a huge smile and hearing you softly giggle at him… Huh, he wasn’t anticipating this to happen. You must be easily amused or maybe his jokes have gotten better! He’ll be sure to relay this information to Tighnari soon.
Tighnari couldn’t contain the slight irk on his face once Cyno told him that a poor soul out there was subjected to one of Cyno’s jokes and actually found them funny. And he couldn’t help but notice the upbeat of Cyno’s mood or the barely visible smile on his face when he was talking about you…
Cyno developed a habit of telling his jokes more often around you—telling himself that as your friend, a part of his duty is to make your day better with his corny jokes. But maybe, just maybe, deep down there was another reason to this. Like the way your eyes squinted and creased at the sides, a faint dimple or two that showed on your muscles whenever you smiled; or was it that wonderfully soft laugh that rang in Cyno’s eardrums?
He wanted to keep hearing you laugh, to see you smile because of him. Yes, it’s perfectly normal for someone to want to see their friend happy. Not only that, but this foreign feeling had begun to form and flutter around Cyno’s chest; a strangely light and airy sensation that at times clouded his sharp mind. Was it normal to be feeling like this? He had never felt this way when he first met you, so why was it growing stronger by each interaction he had with you…
Moreover, why did Cyno want to chase this feeling? Was he sick, maybe? Or something had happened in the past weeks he had befriended you that slipped past him? Now, just thinking about you made his stomach fill with butterflies and chest tighten in such an uncomfortable and wonderfully weird way.
“…Are you stupid?”
“Pardon?”
Cyno stared at Tighnari blankly as he stared back, face written in obvious annoyance and deadpan. Cyno had taken a quick visit to Gandharva Ville and looked for Tighnari to discuss his… dilemma with you. Once Cyno had relayed your past encounters and his ‘symptoms’, that was when he was gifted with a painfully unamused look from his close friend.
Tighnari looked conflicted almost, trying to think of what to say in a way where Cyno still understood his point; letting out an exasperated sigh. “Listen, I’m not expert in this, but… I think you just have a crush on them.” he guessed just being plainly honest was the best method instead of sugercoating it.
Unfortunately for Tighnari, Cyno just happened to be as dumb as a rock when it came to relationships. Cyno shot him a cold glare, face slightly reddening at Tighnari’s words. Oh boy, he’s still in the denial stage.
He quirked an eyebrow, “What do you mean by that?”
“Well, everything you said seems to check out my hypothesis.” Tighnari casually stated, absentmindedly pulling out a notebook and jotting down some notes for a reason unknown to Cyno.
When he looked back up at him, he just looked… confused. Still totally lost while he was desperately trying to connect the pieces to no success in his brain. If he kept this up any longer, Tighnari’s brain would probably melt from how dense he was being.
“How would you feel if they went on a date with another guy?” Tighnari blurred out and flipped his notebook shut; carefully watching Cyno’s reaction as his eyes widened at the strangely sudden question.
He may be well versed in keeping a neutral face, but Cyno couldn’t contain the grimace when he further pondered on the hypothetical scenario; remembering the numerous times he’s heard your laughter only this time, it’s because of another person.
“…Tch.”
“See~?” Tighnari was halfway-amused by Cyno’s strong reaction to this idea, “Might as well admit it now instead of letting yourself suffer in denial—Master Tighnari’s always right, as they say…”
At this point, Tighnari and Collei had met you a couple of times; just enough to get familiar with what you were like. It was suffering for Tighnari to watch Cyno blush and get tongue-tied just from you looking at him or seeing Cyno stand there like a lovesick buffoon; staring at you from afar after parting ways.
Collei had listened to a few muttering complaints about Cyno’s dense attitude from Tighnari a couple of times; but she was mostly too embarrassed to try and give her own input on Cyno’s situation. The only kind of intense love she felt for someone was familial and for Amber, and Collei always thought she was too young to be thinking about things like dating…
However, she did have a varied collection of romance light novels stored away in a bin in her bedroom. This genre wasn’t something she would’ve chosen herself, but Amber seems to keep sending them for whatever reason… But, maybe these books could prove some use to Cyno! It wasn’t much, but it felt like it was the least she could do after Cyno helped her through such difficult times in the past…
She’s way too flustered to try and give these to Cyno in person, so she wraps them in paper and asks Tighnari to give them to Cyno next time he visits. Tighnari had tried asking what exactly she was giving him, but decided it wasn’t anything to worry about and gave the package to Cyno without a word.
Fair to say he was really surprised by the contents of the package, carefully reading the note Collei had written.
“I’m not exactly sure what your relationship is with (Name), but both Master Tighnari know you seem to really care about them! Amber kept giving me these books when sending letters, and I think they’d be useful for you right about now. P.S. Please don’t tell Master Tighnari I gave you these! He’d probably confiscate them if he knew… -Collei”
Cyno’s conversation with Tighnari had stuck with him for a while, he needed some time to sit on it. Sure, he liked you, but romantically? Romance was something that never interested him once, but if the context is related to you somehow, then…
He needed to confirm this possibility for himself. Next time he’d meet you, he’ll take note of how he was feeling before he saw you and after; call it a little experiment of his. Only thing is, the simple thought of running into you made Cyno more excited than it’s worth.
Poor guy just really needs a wake up call. It takes a long while for Cyno to finally stop lying to himself and say “Yes, I like them.” once he did accept this, he was still trying to wrap his brain around the concept of love. Tighnari was so relieved that the constant gnawing feeling could finally stop once his friend came to terms with his romantic attraction for you, but that would only be the beginning to a long, never-ending journey…
Now with Cyno’s acceptance arc out of the way, he decides it’s time to find a way to try and convey how he feels in a very discreet way (keyword; discreet) He had taken a few notes on the romantic novels Collei had gifted him, deducing that people favour grand romantic gestures and dates at places that ‘set the mood’, per say.
Tighnari had been convinced to help Cyno in his mission to impress you multiple times. He could have easily said no, but maybe a part of him did want to see his friend happy with someone he clearly cared a lot about.
Cyno always said went to Tighnari to discuss new ideas to win your affection; and one time he told Cyno that you probably liked people who made you laugh, and that he already had some form of advantage(?) in this category.
As soon as he said that, the pit of dread formed in his stomach once he saw the scarily excited and determined look on Cyno’s face. Now he had a new reasoning behind his jokes: one, to ‘lighten’ the mood and two, to see you happy.
“(Name).” You perked your head up from the book you were reading to look at Cyno, who was going through a set of Genius Invokation cards to match with the newest ‘meta’.
When you returned his gaze with a curious look, Cyno could feel his cheeks burn; but he kept his face apathetic, “I’d like to tell a joke.” he said.
“Sure!” You chirped back, closing the book shut and turning all your attention to your friend.
He coughs, “Why do we tell actors to ‘break a leg’?”
“I don’t know?”
“…To get into the ‘cast’.”
… Was it not funny? Cyno frowned, he was sure that’d make you laugh, maybe if he were to explain it then—
“Hehe… Ahaha…!” you cut off his thoughts when he heard you laugh, a sweetly airy and genuine giggle that matched perfectly with the adorable smile on your face. You were cute, he thought, eyes softening at your reaction only to find himself with a question that would forever be left unanswered.
Whenever he tried to make you fall for him, why would he only fall harder?
Tighnari ended up finding himself perched up in a tree while tinkering with a pair of binoculars; spying over you and Cyno’s afternoon “date”. (Collei had caught him up in a tree or two on a number of occasions, but she had managed to put the pieces together on what he was doing and to not interfere despite how curious she was…)
I don’t think it could even be called a date, it was more like a casual hangout between two people but one of them had happen to be sickly smitten over their friend. It had taken an embarrassing amount of courage for Cyno to ask you out to lunch, Tighnari quietly hyping him up and sending a weak thumbs up before watching him go and talk to you.
It had been going well so far, Tighnari ignoring the way Cyno sometimes tripped up on his words or looked like he was desperately trying to hold it together; but well enough that the two of you were having a good time. He zoomed further in, amplifying the focus as he watched you two casually talk and walk along the path leading to Sumeru City.
The reason why Cyno had asked Tighnari to watch was to take notes on his ‘performance’. He already scribbled a few lines onto the paper; such as ‘body too stiff’ and ‘speak louder you lummox!!!!!’ The mostly uneventful event continued as expected, Tighnari having to awkwardly shuffle into a corner of the restaurant you ate lunch at without getting noticed by you. He was mostly waiting on Cyno to do something he had planned before the designated time of your date, which was to give you a Sumeru rose and proclaim a brief and romantic speech before you left.
When that moment did come, the words only got caught in Cyno’s throat when you innocently turned to look at him after grabbing your attention. Was is always this difficult to speak? Or was it just your glowing radiance that made the matra quite literally stunned. He awkwardly crumpled the small sheet of paper stuffed into the fist of his hand, eyes turned down to the grassy fields supporting his feet before pulling a Sumeru rose from behind his back.
Cyno saw your eyes widen slightly in his peripheral vision, before a smile spread across your face with no restraint.
“…I had fun today, and I heard people give each other gifts to show their appreciation. So this is for you.” he quietly choked out, hand extended outwards to you and praying you didn’t see the slight quiver in his fingertips and palms sweating.
“Pff— Ahahahah…! I may or may not have gotten a rose for you, too…” you sheepishly reached behind you to reveal a freshly picked red rose in your grasp, its petals still in full bloom and painted in a beautiful red like wine.
When did you get that? He was sure he would’ve noticed it… Also, was he dreaming right now? He honestly felt like he may of passed out right then are there, but he quietly plucked the flower from your hands as you did the same. Cyno stared at it contemplated, staring at the individual petals before looking back at you with disbelief.
“But, why…?”
You cocked your head to the side confused, “Why? I think we both know the answer, wouldn’t you agree?” you smiled knowingly at the white haired man in front of you, grinning at his cutely dumbfounded expression.
“Your friend Tighnari knows a lot about plants, so I’m sure he knows the meaning of certain flowers…” your words trailed off and eyes wandered to the rose in Cyno’s hand, Cyno missing the red tint on your cheeks as you turned away.
“I should get going now.”
“Do you want me to accompany you?”
“Oh, no need. The sun’s just start setting, I’ll be okay. Be safe on your way home, Cyno!” you waved happily goodbye, quickly setting off on your way while Cyno stood there—slowly watching your form walk towards the horizon until he couldn’t see you anymore.
He looked down at the red rose, the meaning behind them…
“All roses tend to flourish best in full sunlight.” Tighnari approached Cyno slowly from behind, stretching his arms and turning to look at him with a somewhat smug smile tugging at his lips “They grow in moist, well-drained soil in warm environments. And as for the meaning…
The red variety symbolize passion and love. Some think the deeper the shade represents how committed you are to someone; but it depends on the person. I suppose. What do you think, Cyno?”
Really, he couldn’t be more happier.

"Alright I've got bandages, medicinal herbs, slime concentrate-- anything else I can get for you 'nari?" you ask, glancing up from the pile of supplies on your counter. Tighnari shakes his head, offering you a small smile. Hearing your nickname for him made his chest bloom with warmth and he could feel his tail curl up, mirroring the joy he was feeling.
"That's it this week. Thanks again." You smile and start calculating the price.
"Let me get that total for you and I'll send you off!"
This was Tighnari's weekly routine. He'd travel to Sumeru City weekly for supplies and stop by your shop. You had popped up not too long ago and were much smaller than the other stalls selling medicinal supplies. He had approached yours in curiosity. He was your first customer for the week, and you were practically vomiting up words in an attempt to convince him to buy from you.
He appreciated your honesty and integrity, only selling your supplies just above their raw value. The surprise on your face and tears bubbling in your eyes at the large first order left the fox with a warm feeling in his chest.
"Thank you, thank you, thank you!" Your joy was immeasurable, and you sent him home with extra products he didn't even pay for. Thus began your relationship as merchant and buyer. You knew that at 10am sharp, Tighnari would appear ready to restock his stash, and maybe tell you about some new species he found or the latest expedition.
"Being a forest ranger sure sounds dangerous, 'Nari. You don't get very hurt, do you?" The man wants to curl up under his tail in pure guilt when he sees your concerned expression. He doesn't have the heart to tell you that he's had quite a few close calls in his life, including the time he was struck by lightning. Instead, he chooses to assuage your fears, assuring you that he's quite careful, which isn't a lie necessarily.
He doesn't know when he started falling for you-- was it when you took time out of your day to visit Gandharva Ville and check on Colleii's recovery? Or the other day you came and visited to help him tend to injured rangers? Maybe it was the way your whole body physically seemed to come alive every time he visited your shop. Sure, you were friendly with all your customers, radiating joy like a ball of sunshine. But he wasn't blind-- he notices the way your eyes light up and how your speech speeds up when talking to him. The attention you gave to him was special. He lived to see it.
The growing fondness was not isolated to just Tighnari-- you would never admit this aloud, but you had also grown fond of the forest ranger. He had shot up on your list of favored people months ago when he approached your stall with genuine interest. Every time he'd visit, he'd bring something more valuable than mora-- his time.
No matter how busy he seemed, or irrelevant the topic was, Tighnari always hung around your stall, sharing his stories or even just his feelings at the time. His attention was only on you, ears pointed towards you and eyes piercing, begging for you to go on for longer about whatever mundane daily happenings you experienced.
It was sickening. Maybe it was because he interacted with all sorts of flowers (you could always spot the softest dusting of pollen on his clothes), but Tighnari was intoxicating. You found yourself drawn to him and counting down the days to his next visit. You wanted to be near him constantly.
Any outsider who looked at you two for more than two seconds could tell that you both were head over heels for each other. You both were like school children, shifting and dancing around the reality of your feelings. Onlookers could only hope you two would realize the truth quickly and confess.
✦✧✦✧
"Hey, Tighnari, what kind of flowers does y/n like?"
Tighnari nearly snaps his pencil in half, ears perking up at attention. He feels his blood run cold, a barely audible growl rumbling through his chest.
"What was that?" he just barely manages to hiss out, slowly turning his gaze towards Amir, his fellow forest watcher. The man has a sheepish smile on his face, awkwardly rubbing the back of his neck.
"It's a bit cliche to fall for a healer, but I can't help it-- y/n is just beautiful! And they're so caring," he continues, then lets out an embarrassed laugh. "I want to take them out on a date! Or at least get to know them."
Tighnari's expression is unreadable as he stares at Amir. His mind races as he tries to process what he's just heard. Of course, I wouldn't be the only one to fall for them. But Amir? Does he really think he has a chance? Tighnari sneers mentally, and he can feel his tail straighten out in agitation, tugging at his lower back.
"You hang out with them a lot! Help me out Tighnari!" Amir pleads, clasping his hands together. The fox raises an eyebrow, unimpressed by his fellow ranger's desperation. Perhaps, a white lie wouldn't hurt. If it keeps Amir from acting stupid.
"I can't help you," Tighnari answers, and Amir looks up flabbergasted at his superior's denial of his request.
"If you want to court someone, you have to do the work yourself. It won't mean as much if I just tell you what y/n likes. Why not get to know them yourself?" The dog trainer stands there dumbfounded, but he takes Tighnari's words into consideration. There was some merit to it after all. And a person like you deserves to have full efforts made towards romancing you.
"I suppose you're right. Well, tha-" Amir begins, but he's cut off by a bone-chilling glare from Tighnari.
"Besides, I'm already courting y/n. Choose someone else."
✦✧✦✧
The next time Tighnari visits your shop, he's not greeted with a warm smile or a cheery "Welcome back 'nari!" Instead, he receives an unimpressed stare and crossed arms from you. He offers a weird smile, taking in your body language.
"What's got your roots tangled up, y/n? Did I not return on time?" He jokes, standing in front of your stall. You snort and lean forward, resting your hands on the counter, careful not to knock down the supplies you prepared.
"Did you tell Amir that we were dating?" you ask cooly, and Tighnari can feel his nerves burn like a wildfire. That blabbermouth. I should've known he'd run off and confirm that information himself. Tighnari clears his through and fixes his smile.
"Technically, I said I was courting you. He came up with dating on his own!" You roll your eyes and turn away to dig through your other supplies, not giving him an answer.
Tighnari swallows thickly, watching your figure, desperately trying to pick apart your body language. Did I overstep my boundaries? Are they pissed off? They didn't blow up in my face but they didn't seem too pleased either. Why are they-
"You know, if you wanted to take me out on a date, you could've just asked me out," you muse, slamming down a giant pouch of mistflower stamens. The archer blinks at you owlishly, and you can see the cogs in his brain turning as he processes what you say. When it clicks, his cheeks turn a dusty rose, and he suddenly can't make eye contact with you. His tail was a dead giveaway though, curling and twisting in excitement.
"I take it you like me back then?"
"You sure know a ton about plant life but not about reading obvious signs, huh?" He turns to look at you in shock, opening his mouth to counter your statement. You cut him off with a quick peck to his cheek, pressing the supplies into his hands.
"I'll be ready in 3 nights, 6 o'clock sharp." You poke his nose gently, and he sneezes instinctively. "Don't be late, or I'll make the hunter the hunted~"

'good for me' tighnari
Tumblr media
you always saw something special in tighnari, which also meant you were willing to do anything for him. but what if your desires are reflected right back to you?
tags! praise, desk fucking, penetration, mutual pining, consensual, half clothed sex, self indulgent, my immature self ( i cant take this seriously 💀 ), female reader
Tumblr media
tighnari scanned the papers with narrowed eyes, his mind taking in every word and data written onto the stack of research. you felt your heart beat nervously.
he smiled. “yep. these look good. thank you for always helping us out, y/n.”
you felt relief wash over your body as he organized the papers and placed them on his desk. “it’s really nothing, i’ll always be able to be at your assistance sir tighnari.” you said while returning his smile. his eyes soften. “i’m glad to hear that. you may go now.”
he watches as you left the hut, leaving just him and his thoughts; specifically, the image of your gentle smile followed by your sweet voice saying his name. it made him feel all giddy and sweet inside.
“tighnari…” the forest ranger mumbled out, playing your voice in his head like a broken record. his tail swished around in satisfaction.
i should continue offering these errands for her…
Tumblr media
it was the third time tighnari has asked you to either run a personal request or pair up with him for patrols this week. you watched every step you took towards tighnaris hut with pots of various plants in your arms. you couldn’t help but wonder what caused him to always be searching for you throughout the day.
not that you really minded though. who wouldn’t resist being in the aid of the chief officer of the forest rangers ? he was truly everything good put into a single being. whether it was his intelligence or stern yet caring words that spoke out of his mouth, you always felt your admiration for him grow day by day.
perhaps something stronger than admiration was blooming as well.
as you knocked the door that led to his home, tighnari promptly opened it with his usual faint smile. you welcomed yourself in and sat on a chair next to him.
“you know y/n, you’re always doing such a great job with these requests. it’s truly a big help to have you here.” tighnari praised you diligently. he viewed the plants closely, his ears flickering in curiosity. you flushed at his compliment.
“once again, it’s my pleasure sir.”
“still, i’m very glad that you are able to volunteer your time for this. after all, you already work so hard as a member of the rangers.” he commented. you felt your cheeks growing hot, did you always feel this way when people praised you ?
you avert his gaze in hopes that it’ll make your anxiety leave. it simply continues to grow when he gently reaches over to remove something from your face with his gloved fingers.
“sorry- there was something on your face. it must’ve been from when you were outside.”
his touch made you feel so vulnerable, you realize. you can’t stop your heartbeat from running a literal marathon or the embarrassing feeling in between your legs.
the plants on the table are placed away to the side, and tighnari neatly shoved the papers away from your view. he seemed distracted, to your relief; just when you thought you were able to hide your nervousness from tighnari, he looks at you with a smile.
“did you know that most breeds of foxes can hear from 100 feet away ? which means that also applies to me, a human hybrid of a fennec fox. we also have heightened sense of smell-”
there was surely no way tighnari was lecturing you about his own breed while you sat there practically begging him to touch you. he continued his rant, but you were unable to focus. just as you were beginning to space out, tighnari leans closer to whisper something into your ear.
“which means i can hear your heart beating excessively fast right now…” he mumbles. “... and your scent is all that's filling my brain…”
you swear you're an embarrassed mess by now, his words going straight from your head to your stomach. you gently push him away in fear that you won’t hold yourself back any longer. “sir- you’re teasing me too much.”
“just call me tighnari from now.”
he’s gentle, but the starved glint glazing his eyes tell you otherwise. his fingers reached to tuck a strand of h/c hair to the back of your ear and he’s inching closer, his hot breath against the nape of your neck.
it was a blessing nobody was watching the scene unfold. the chief of the forest rangers, making such arousing actions towards their own pupil. anticipation is bubbling to the very tip of your chest.
“be obedient and listen to me, will you ?” he asks smoothly and you nod a little too quick for your own liking. he gestures you to get up, making you face the table. “are you sure you’re okay with this ?”
“yeah.” you heave out. that’s all the more tighnari needs to place one hand on your hips and the other on your back. he gently pushes you down to the table.
“then allow me…”
you were pressed against the desk, your back facing tighnari. his hands went up and down your clothed back before reaching over to undo your pants, playing with the hem of your underwear. you could feel a hard buldge pressing against the thin fabric that was starting to dampen.
as he started to suckle on your neck and you unconsciously began to grind your hips against his boner. his sharp canines dug into your skin, eliciting a small whine from your lips.
this felt all too real. your hot boss bending you over while you shamelessly rut yourself into him like it’s the best opportunity ever given to you. he’s growling back sinful moans, attempting to control himself.
“i’ve been watching you, and you’re always doing such a good job for me.” tighnari whispers into your ear. he quickly removes his gloves, fingers slowly stroking your drenched panties.
“tighnari please…”
he removes your underwear, the smell of your arousal feeding into his desires. it’s so addicting, he wishes that he could have you all to himself, the way you whined and blushed under his touch.
two fingers are slipped into your hole. in embarrassment, you attempt to hide your pleasured moans, the ranger chuckles in response. “don’t hold back from me. don’t you wanna be a good girl and show me how good it feels ?” he asks while fucking his fingers deep inside of you. “tell me, how long have you been waiting for this ? you always seemed so nervous around me, and it just makes me want you even more.” he confesses. you let out a lewd moan. “since forever- ah, tighnari-”
he’s awfully good at what he was doing. the way he curved his fingers that hit the spot had you rolling your eyes to the back of your head. his pace is perfect and before you know it, you feel a heat in your stomach reaching its climax.
“ah ! tighnari i’m gonna…” you can’t finish your words." he nibbles on your ears teasingly. “you’re gonna cum ?” you nod quickly before cumming all over his fingers while still being a panting mess. he hums in satisfaction.
“that’s a good girl. don’t worry, i’m not done with you yet.” you can hear him unbuckle his pants. you’re already a sweating mess, and the thought of tighnari ramming his cock into you made you even more flushed.
he presses his dick against you and you realize how big he was. hell, you didn’t even dare to look back to see if your assumption was true. “tighnari it’s so big. will it even fit ?” you mumble.
“don’t worry, i’m sure you can take it all.” he responds, kissing your neck eagerly. his words were just too sweet to resist, and before you know it, he’s got you twirled around his finger.
you suck in a deep breath as he slowly inserts himself inside your throbbing hole. he was gentle, making sure not to hurt you in any way. inch by inch, he settles inside your gummy walls; and he swears that the image of you looking like this is enough to get him cumming.
“that’s my pretty girl.”
the word ‘my’ go through your head, and his praises make you clench around him unconsciously, your walls gripping onto his dick.  he groans, “fuck… you’re making me so close already.”
the thrusts start off slow and steady. his hands are secured on your hip as he begins to rut into you deeper and faster. you squirm. lewd sounds of his dick fucking you in and out echoes through the room; you swear his desk could break any moment.
“t-tighnari… it feels so good !”
he’s panting and moaning into your ear as pleasure vibrates from all over your body. despite the fact that your hips are clothed, you swore his grip would bloom red bruises over your waist. the rolling of his hips into yours made you starstruck.
his dick reaches the same spot that pleased you the most. your voice gets louder as he continues to fuck you in that soft spot. “ah ! right there !” your legs are shaking and your eyes are rolled back, mouth hung wide open with erotic sounds exiting your vocal chords.
sticky liquid coats his dick and dribbles down to the wooden ground. the sound is so sticky and the smell of sex is heavy in the room.
“come on, just a bit more, ‘m close too.” he’s practically begging you as he continues to fuck himself into you. the feeling was addicting, your walls so soft and tight, perfect, just the way he liked.
tighnari is quick to reach his own climax and pulls out with a wince, cum slicking your back, leaving a shiny finish to your shaking figure. he moves your h/c hair out of the way before placing gentle kisses on your nape. “truly, you’re too good for me.”
“you really are too good.”

Alhaitham X Cyno - How am I supposed to spoil you when you won’t accept my gifts?
Alhaitham has a problem.
It’s one that has been building up over the past few months until it’s finally reached a point where he can no longer ignore it. Research has unfortunately yielded few answers and his own personal knowledge on the subject assures him that unless the issue is addressed nothing will change.
What is the problem that has confounded the Grand Scribe and former Acting Grand Sage of the Akademiya? Why none other than the General Mahamatra himself.
To clarify Cyno himself is not a problem, or rather if he is one then he is a lovely problem. The kind that leaves Alhaitham reeling as his thoughts are scattered to the four winds. The kind of problem that requires strong commitment to untangle, a lifetime of study would only barely be enough to fully comprehend it.
No, the true problem is that Cyno refuses to accept any of Alhaitham’s gifts. After an extremely lengthy courting process that mainly consisted of what Dehya called ‘mutually intolerable pining without either of you dumbasses doing a damn thing about it’ they had finally entered a romantic relationship. Frankly he didn’t believe the words properly conveyed the depth of his feelings for Cyno but he had more pressing matters to worry about than a way to describe the exhilarating mix of devotion, longing and soul-crushing joy that had carved a messy hole in his chest.
It was hard to believe that Cyno felt the same way but he knew better than to doubt his general’s word. Not unless he wanted to find himself emotionally flayed open, bleeding love through claw marks as Cyno worshiped him in the darkness of their room.
No, that was a course of action best saved for a special day.
The root of the matter was Cyno’s sense of duty to his role. The General Mahamatra had to be neutral, unbiased to any particular group or scholar and in line with this anything that could be constituted as a bribe was swiftly returned to the sender. Alhaitham knows that his own stint as Acting Grand Sage had not helped matters as the last thing Cyno needed was to be perceived as under the influence of the Grand Sage. It was one of the reasons they hadn’t gotten together until Alhaitham had finally been able to step down. Even then there had been a heated argument over whether it was appropriate for the General and the Grand Scribe to involve themselves in a romantic entanglement.
Alhaitham had never fought so fiercely for anything before in his life and had earned his victory with every scrap of intellect he possessed.
So any gifts he gave to Cyno were politely returned or refused.
Wealth? Alhaitham never bothered to send money because Cyno was richer than him and it was the most obvious gift that could be construed as a bribe.
Flowers? A traditional gift suggested by Nilou. He had imported a rare breed of lily from Fontaine which had subsequently ended up as part of Tighnari’s next research project.
TCG cards? The one time he’d tried that with his own card, the only one Cyno could not get before Alhaitham himself, Cyno had insisted on winning it off him in a fair game and refused to just accept it. Though Alhaitham didn’t consider that a loss because Cyno had been so distracted by the sight of his own card in Alhaitham’s deck that it had take him three games to win it, allowing Alhaitham to enjoy the sight of his lover’s blushing face as ruby red eyes kept drifting to the purple and gold card.
Books? Cyno had suggested he donate them to Aaru Village to help with their new library, despite knowing full well Alhaitham was working with Candace to fill the modestly sized building as soon as possible.
Alcohol? This was always taken but then shared at the next gathering of friends which diminished the uniqueness of a gift for Cyno. Especially when Kaveh seemed to drink most of the expensive wine.
Practical gifts were difficult to procure because Cyno was a very practical man and already had most of the things he needed. He kept them in good repair with his usual diligence which meant Alhaitham couldn’t even buy him a replacement.
After a month of pondering over this problem and failing to find a solution Alhaitham settles on asking Cyno directly. While some, Kaveh, would decry this as unromantic Alhaitham disagrees. Communication is a vital component in all relationships; words, actions, gestures, expressions and he is determined to do this right. He refuses to even entertain the possibility of making a mistake because he wasn’t clear in his intentions.
“How am I supposed to spoil you when you won’t accept my gifts?” He asks bluntly the next time he meets Cyno.
This happens to be during their shared lunch break in which Cyno coaxes him up the branches of the Divine Tree, with only minor grumbling, to the very top so they can look out over the forest together.
Cyno pauses in reaching for his drink and turns to face him. He eyes Alhaitham curiously, that brilliant mind working to piece together the reason behind the sudden question.
“Is this because of the Lakelight Lilies?”
“Not just them. It’s come to my attention that you seem to dislike receiving gifts from me, I can’t tell if this is a phenomenon linked only to myself or to a wider range of people but I fail to see the reason why. You are my partner—
“—boyfriend.” Cyno cuts in with a smile.
“You know how I feel about that word — and I wish to show you proof of my affection. You’re making that very hard to do by either refusing or giving away everything I offer, I’m starting to feel a little rejected.” Alhaitham finishes with a teasing smile of his own to take the sting out of his words.
Cyno huffs and shakes his head, looking at Alhaitham with unmistakable fondness.
“I don’t need those types of gifts Haitham.”
“You may not need them but if you want something then I want to give it to you.” Alhaitham murmurs, taking Cyno’s hand in his own and pressing a kiss to the back of his palm.
“Foolish man, you already spoil me enough.” Cyno rolls his eyes but doesn’t pull his hand back, and Alhaitham eagerly drinks in the red flush blooming across dark cheeks. “Your time, your affections.”
Cyno puts his free hand on Alhaitham’s chest.
“Your heart.” He says firmly. “You have placed all of these things at my feet and yet believe you haven’t spoiled me. How can that possibly be when you have given me everything I have ever dreamed about already?”
Part of Alhaitham’s mind starts to form a counterargument to Cyno’s eloquently put point. He considers himself a smart man, which is why the rest of him can focus on the delightful task of kissing Cyno breathless with all of Sumeru stretched out below them as he gifts himself to his beloved one more time.

Tighnari | Charmolypi
ıllı Synopsis: Fate loves to play a cruel game. When the name of your fated is engraved on your wrist, it is between the parties whether they end up as a couple or forever becoming strangers. However, there is always a consequence for those who wishes to challenge fate.
ıllı Genre: Angst, Slight Comfort
ıllı Notes: Gender Neutral Reader
ıllı Part 2: Tighnari - Over Panacean Lotuses
Tumblr media
Emotions and relationships are often baffling and exhausting. It can range from pure joy to inculpable anger. Oftentimes, an individual can experience more than two emotions depending on the situation. These affect the relationships and boundaries people set with each other. Not understanding what one feels often results in fear, guilt, loneliness, and regret. One student once said that in order to achieve mutual understanding, they should spend time together and let time take its course.
‘But because of how different our professions had become, you and I drifted far from each other.’ You thought, looking down at Tighnari and the Traveler as they enjoy their stroll in the Avidya Forest. Initially, you wanted to see the Forest Watcher and tell him your whereabouts, but he was already occupied. There was nothing left for you, not even the space you once filled in his heart.
Like a glass hit by a bullet, cracks swiftly crept up your heart. No matter how much assurance you gave to yourself to mend the pain, Tighnari proved you otherwise. You could only give a bitter smile. Pining for a man enamored by the Traveler’s charms was truly dangerous.
‘There will only be regrets. But do I regret loving you? I’m not sure. Maybe, I’ve been delusional, hoping that with the time we spent, you and I could have fallen in love with each other.’ Wiping the tears, you took a deep breath and turned around. You took the callused hand of the person waiting behind you. The shake of your head signaled to him that you will not proceed with your original plan.
“I see. I’ll treat you to your favorite food later then.” He comforted. It was surprising, for this man to offer warm words. You laughed and told him that aside from food, you would love to get some books for your next research too.
“I’m spoiling you now?” He teased. You simply grinned, not noticing the faint glow on your wrist. It slipped from your mind that fate loved to play a cruel game with people. When the name of your fated is engraved on your wrist, both parties either end up being together or forever becoming strangers. The consequence of the latter is that the person who bore the strongest affection ends up being consumed by the curse, slowly dangling between rationality and madness.
It was a month later that Tighnari noticed your disappearance. It confused him at first as to why you have not visited Gandharva Ville in a while, but he attributed it to your busy schedule. He missed the times when you both would sneak out in the dark of the night to watch the moon cast its glow upon the lake of lotuses. It gave him comfort just thinking about going back to those times. He thought of inviting you again, a form of relaxation from your exhausting jobs. All of his plans fell into the abyss when Cyno broke the news to him.
“Nobody has seen (Y/N)? What do you mean, Cyno?” Tighnari asked, confused as to how nobody knew where you were.
“It’s just as I said, Tighnari. It has been for a month now. I tried to ask the locals if there had been any sightings, but nothing came up.” Cyno confessed, slightly frustrated that there was also nothing coming up with his search. It had been reported to him by your advisor, and he promised to look out for you. But it was like you vanished in the wind.
Tighnari’s breathing quickened. The last time you two saw each other was after Karkata started residing in Pardis Dhyai. He recalled back your conversations with him, hoping for a clue as to where you could have gone. Knowledge capsules, Akademiya researchers, madness, fates, and desert, he could only recall these.
“Have you tried asking in Aaru Village? Or interrogating Eremites?” Tighnari inquired, desperation evident in his voice. He tried to remain calm, he did, but for some reason, his heart was telling him that something was wrong.
“I haven’t. Let me see what I can get from my side. I’ll send a messenger if I ever get anything.” Cyno promised.
Tighnari thanked the general, opting to go back to his office to finish his papers. While sorting them out, he noticed a faint glow on his wrist. Your name was engraved in there, but what frightened him was the way it was fading.
‘Why… is it fading?’
Tumblr media
“Ack…! It hurts!” The pain in your chest was unbearable, the engraving on your wrist flickering in the dim room. Ever since you decided to stay away from Tighnari, the crack that crept up your heart continuously grew to the point that you would shed tears, losing in the delusion of pain.
‘Please, stop. He doesn’t love me that way. He… prefers the Traveler! Enough!’ But deep in your heart, there was still a bud of hope, unrelenting to the barrage of negative emotions that coated your mind.
“(Y/N), you have to take this medicine.” Alhaitham whispered, coaxing you to take the liquid vial in his hands. Your gaze zoomed on his cerulean-orange irises. He could see how much the curse had already affected you, but he will have to force you to take the medicine to ensure your safety during the mission.
The Temple of Silence tasked you two to investigate the mysterious occurrences involving ruin golems found in the mountains near Lower Setekh. However, the curse suddenly acted up upon noticing how you were killing your emotions. Alhaitham noticed the symptoms and formulated the remedy that researchers from before had concocted. The medicine will act as a barrier for your memories to rescind and keep the curse at bay. You will feel pain at times, but continuous ingestion should numb it. The Scribe was not a fan of such a method, but this was currently the only available treatment.
“Alhaitham… why is falling in love so painful? I thought it was supposed to feel like a miracle?” You muttered, clutching his hand.
“Because you found him perfect in this imperfect world.” He simply answered. It dawned on you just how much you love him, how much you yearned for the man you couldn’t have. A pity, really.
“I see… I—“ You took the medicine from his hand and drank it. Like a miracle, the pain subsided, allowing you to take a breather. You turned to Alhaitham, held his hand, and discussed what you will do from here on out. He questioned your actions, but you assured him that you knew the consequences. You were foolish enough already, so why not take it up the notch?
Two days later, the Scribe was surprised by your speedy recovery. You gave him a wry smile and joked that it should do so considering the Great Scribe was willing to take care of you for free. Alhaitham scoffed, flicking your forehead. He told you about his own progress during your recovery, and he had already drawn a route for you to take. You were calculating the things you will need for the trip, while Alhaitham took notice of your blank eyes. He grew uncomfortable with it.
“I chose this on my volition, Alhaitham. You don’t need to worry. We should get to the first one before night falls. There are 4 golems sighted, but we should finish scouting in a week or two. That is if nothing goes awry.” You commented. He pointed out a caravan town near the mountain as well as the black market there that could potentially slow you two down should Eremites block you.
“All right. I presume you already got your things ready. Let me just bring mine out then we can head out. We have to thank Candace and the Village Chief for keeping quiet and letting us here too.” You reminded. He nodded and decided to wait by reading the book you got from Dori for half its original price.
You both wore your cloaks in preparation for the sandstorm. While on the road, your mind drifted off to Tighnari, thinking if he was out, spending time with the Traveler again. He had his responsibilities, you knew, but he never failed to give time to those that mattered to him.
‘Just like how he does with mine. I’m so jealous of you, Traveler.’ You confessed to yourself. What you failed to notice was the faint glow of your mark despite the name fading.
As for Tighnari, his heart felt heavier with each passing day. He was desperate to know where you were, why you were gone without telling him, and simply hold you in his embrace. As distracted as he was, he still tried to be the Forest Watcher everybody expected him to be. Too much to say that even Collei was now worried. Her master had the patience of the sky, but ever since the Mahamatra informed you of your disappearance, the fennec fox seemed more irritable and would snap often. He would apologize once he recognized it, but Collei knew that her master deeply cared for you, more than anything else. She did not even see him go with the Traveler—
“Hold on. Didn’t (Y/N) want to meet up with Master a month ago? They looked like they were going somewhere based on their clothing and bag, but… it was also the time that Master was with the Traveler to check for Withering Zones. Was there some kind of misunderstanding here?” She muttered to herself. If there really was, then this predicament was a mess.
Tighnari, who was sitting in his office, could not concentrate. His mind would drift to you, worry paining his heart. He could hear the crack in his heart deepen, but he reassured himself that you will be all right, that you will be back in his arms.
It was a week later that he finally heard from Cyno. You were spotted with Alhaitham recovering in Aaru Village. He did not know why you were with the Scribe, but he needed to see you right away. Tighnari called for Collei and the other forest rangers, informing him of his sudden departure for the desert. They nodded, not exactly sure why, but they trust him that he will be back. The fennec fox gave Amir and Collei the tasks for the week before turning to Cyno, who was waiting at the door.
“M-Master! Before you go, I have something to say.” Collei called out. She confessed to him about your visit to Gandharva Ville before you disappeared. He could see conflict in her eyes and assured her that he was not mad. He, too, wanted to know why you did not go talk to him about things.
“If there really is a misunderstanding here, Master, please be honest with them.” She advised. Tighnari ruffled her hair and smiled before taking off.
It took almost five hours for them to reach Aaru Village. Tighnari was sweating bullets, already not liking the heat, but he persevered. He was desperate to see you. Although that desperation was washed away when he saw Alhaitham take your hand and rest his right hand on your forehead. You leaned at the touch before closing your eyes and dozing off.
Alhaitham took a deep breath, glancing to the side to recognize the company they had. His piercing gaze zoomed on the Forest Watcher who felt jealousy bubble through his body.
“I would like to respectfully ask you to back off from them, Scribe.” Tighnari voiced with a hint of threat evident in his tone. Alhaitham stood in front of you.
“Oh? What business does the Forest Watcher want with my partner?” Alhaitham asked. The word partner irked the fennec fox, his tail raised in alarm at somebody touching what was his. The thought of you being his crossed his mind, having a short epiphany of his feelings, but he let out a sigh and informed him that he needed to talk to you.
“I can’t let you do that, I’m sorry.” He turned around, about to wake you up and escort you back inside, but Tighnari did not let him. He held his hand tightly and pushed him away. The Scribe was about to protest when he felt the cackle of thunder surround him.
“Explain what is happening, Alhaitham.” Cyno ordered. The Scribe held a hand to his face in irritation. The Temple of Silence told them that this was a secret mission, and if they General Mahamatra questioned them, they only give him a summary about it. No other details should be revealed.
With a huff, he explained the short version of the nature of your mission. He redacted the sensitive information before moving to your case.
“You two are aware of the curse on fated, right? (Y/N) here is of a similar case. It was affecting our mission, so they took the medicine numerous times until the end of it. When we reached Aaru Village four days ago, they already stopped consuming it. This is the result of their decision. When the fated do not end up together, the one with stronger affection spirals into madness. Luckily, theirs was not on the extreme side. Hence, I would like to ask why they ended up taking that decision, Forest Watcher Tighnari. Aren’t you their fated?” He asked, mockery and anger visible in his eyes. Tighnari clenched his fist, looking at you in sadness.
“It was a misunderstanding I think. Collei told me about it, and I want to explain everything to them. Is there anything I can do to help with their recovery?” Tighnari asked. Alhaitham saw his determination and sighed.
“I’m not sure. They’ve been like a blank slate here, often whispering your name and crying. I can only comfort them by holding their hand, but other than that, they could still function normally.” He uttered. Tighnari crouched down and held your left cheek. At the touch of something familiar, your blank eyes opened to stare back at him. The murky irises scared him. It felt like you were descending to the abyss, and he will not be able to get you back.
“I am not ready to entrust them to you, Master Tighnari. Let them stay here for three more days before you take them to Gandharva Ville. Prove to me that you really love them and willing to go to lengths to have them with you. They’ve been through so much already, and I think I have enough right to see through it.” Alhaitham negotiated. Tighnari did not like his tone one bit, but something told him that he was left with no choice but to abide. He glanced back at Cyno who told them that he will inform Candace and the chief.
Once he was gone, Tighnari sat down beside you and let you lean on his shoulder. You dozed off at the familiar heat, not really knowing who it was. His heart cracked once more, feeling himself tear up at your predicament.
“Bring them inside, the cold nights of the desert cause them to shiver more than humans should. Don’t worry, I also won’t touch your mate.” The Scribe teased. Tighnari huffed but followed through. He carried you inside and laid you on your bed. He watched your peaceful sleep, before he turned to Alhaitham.
“What is your relationship with them?” He asked. The Scribe glanced back at him and muttered his answer. Tighnari was surprised but immediately understood what this was all about. He really had a lot to explain and repent once you finally recovered.
“I can only promise that I'll stay by their side until then." He muttered, placing his forehead on yours, hoping for his warmth to reach your heart.

You had been working on your most recent (unofficial) project when Collei stormed into your home. She threw open the door with a huff and scrambled over to you, looking terrified.
"Y-Y/n! Something is wrong with Master Tighnari! He won't get out of bed, and he looks paler than normal! Please come check up on him!" She grabbed your shoulders, startling you out of your train of thought.
"Collei? Huh? What do you-" you paused, thinking for a second. You had been living in Gandharva Ville for the past three years after graduating from the Akademiya, seeking some refuge from the relentless focus on scholarship in Sumeru City. You may be a doctor, but that doesn't mean you strive to be the best doctor out there. You found very little reason to stay within that place, especially with the shameful lack of privacy.
In those three years, you had rarely ever seen your senior take a break. Of course, he's finally overworked himself. It's probably nothing.
You sighed and let Collei lead you to Tighnari's home, where a suffocating silence greeted you, instead of the normal soft hustle you knew to follow Tighnari wherever he went.
"I'm fine, Collei, really, please don't bring Y/n in. They have plenty of work for themself, I don't need to bother them too." Tighnari grumbled from the floor, where he sat crumpled like a wet paper towel.
"It's too late for that," you sighed. Tighnari shot you a half-assed glare. You sat next to him and pressed the back of your hand to his forehead. Almost instantly, you pulled your hand away. His skin was practically radiating with heat. "Dear Archons! Tighnari, how long have you been sick?!"
"I'm fine, Y/n. Just help me up and you can be on your way." He turned away, wavering a little as he struggled to push himself up.
"How bad is it, Y/n? Will Master Tighnari be okay?" Collei looked frightened. You glanced at her, then back to Tighnari.
"I am a doctor, it's nothing I can't handle. He just has a little fever. He'll be fine after some rest and care. There's not much more you can do. Thank you for getting me, darling." You smiled at her and motioned for her to leave. Collei nodded at you and hurried away.
"Let go of me…" Tighnari pouted, trying to push you away. He was so weak that you hardly felt the pressure of his hands against your stomach. "I'm fine."
"Liar," you whispered, wrapping your arms around him. You lifted him up with little struggle, shouldering his weight as you half led half pushed him to his bed.
Tighnari grumbled something you couldn't hear under his breath as you tucked him into his bed and sat beside him. His dazed and embarrassed expression would be cute if he wasn't fighting to escape the chains of his captor- his own bed.
"Calm down, you stubborn fox. What is it you're so desperate to get done? It can't possibly be more important than your own recovery." You shook your head at him, placing a hand on his chest to hold him where he was.
Tighnari let out a long, loud sigh of defeat. "I'm not a child, so stop talking to me like one. And I'm not sick, so there's no recovery necessary."
Just seconds after his declaration of health, he sneezed and stared at you, face turning bright red.
"Not sick are you? You're a bad liar, Master Tighnari. I'm going to go make you something to eat. Do try and rest a little," you said softly.
He turned away from you, refusing to meet your gaze. You stood and gave him a pointed look, almost daring him to try and get up, then left his room to grab the necessary ingredients and medications to care for him after your return.
Tumblr media
Tighnari watched you leave, fighting the urge to call your name. He frowned, slipping deeper under his covers. You were right, and he knew it. If he kept this up, he would be completely out of commission for even longer than if he just let himself rest now.
Now that I think about it, I am a little tired, he thought. Maybe I'll rest my eyes for just a while. It can't hurt, can it?
He closed his eyes- just for a second!- and then all was silent.
Tumblr media
You hummed a small tune as you carted around your bag of supplies. It had been difficult for you to limit yourself to what you could carry; you always liked to be prepared.
You had decided only on the soup ingredients, medicine, and a few items to help check on the Forest Ranger once he had rested and eaten.
You couldn't help but notice how wonderful the weather was, and that it sure was a pity that Tighnari was sick, otherwise you might have been able to convince him to come on a little picnic or something with you. Not that much of a pity, though, because caring for him was almost as enjoyable, and you took any spare time with him that you could get.
It had been this way since your Akademiya days when you had studied under him. You had been younger and much more of a nervous wreck than you are now. It had made hiding that silly crush of yours hard. You really had been crushed when he had graduated and moved away. He never visited you after that. Only after you graduated a few years later had you gathered up the courage to see him again.
It was only supposed to be a little post graduation vacation, but you ended up falling in love with the quiet of Gandharva Ville in comparison to the constant overwhelming movement of the city, and the fact that your senior lived nearby was only a tiny factor in your decision to stay.
Ever since, you had taken up residence in the name of psychological study and ecological experimentation, but really you played a role closer to a village nurse.
Just as your thoughts began to wander back to how Tighnari had been as a student, you felt a brush of cold wind against your back and decided to hurry back to Tighnari's house. As nice as the weather was, it seemed that Gandha Hill was due for a storm.
You hurried back and opened the door as quietly as you could, then shut it softly behind you. Even if Tighnari wasn't asleep, you didn't want to disturb him by being too loud for his extra sharp hearing.
You set all your supplies near the kitchen and made your way to Tighnari's room to check on him.
You opened the door and peeked inside. You were greeted with the sight of Tighnari snuggled underneath his covers, with only the tips of his ears visible to you.
I guess the chill must be getting to him, you thought. Good thing I'm making soup.
You shut his door and got to work on making the mushroom soup that, if your memory served you correctly, was one of Tighnari's favorites.
Tumblr media
The first thing he noticed was the smell. The aroma of creamy, cooked mushrooms wafted through the air and made his stomach growl. He groaned and rolled over, still too asleep to take note of how hungry he was.
The second thing he noticed was your voice. You were softly humming a tune he had memorized the sound of from the time he spent tutoring you. Even though years had passed, he still found himself muttering the words of the childish lullaby to himself when he felt overwhelmed.
The final step necessary for him to really realize he was awake was the sudden uncomfortable heat. He huffed and rolled weakly onto his back and glanced around his room. He had somehow tucked himself under every blanket at his disposal and was now dreadfully sweaty.
His stomach growled again and he forced himself to sit up, pleased to find that the nausea he had been experiencing previously had died down to only a slight discomfort instead of an immediate threat.
The sounds of cooking disappeared and were replaced by footsteps. Yours, and by the sound of it you were heading to his room. He startled at the thought, remembering how pathetic he must have looked in his sleep.
He pulled his blanket back up over his shoulders in spite of the heat to hide the red flush spreading down his neck as he wondered if you had watched him while he slept.
"Oh, you're awake," you muttered after opening his door. You carried over a tray of soup, water, and a couple pills for him and placed it in his bedside. "Did I wake you?"
"Not at all," he stammered, glancing at the cute apron you had adorned while he had been asleep. He knew you were far from domestic or parental, but Archons be damned if you didn't look like a vision with that cute little ribbon tied around your waist and your hair pushed back.
"Good, I wouldn't want to disturb your rest. I made mushroom soup, if you're feeling up for eating." You sat next to him, removing your hair from its prison and allowing it to fall back into its normal place.
"Thank you," he muttered. "I am hungry, actually. My nausea seems to have subsided, and now I just feel more weak than anything. A little feverish, too."
"Ah, then I'm glad I brought the medicine. You should take that, too." You reached over and pressed a cold palm to his forehead, pushing his bangs aside. He felt a little childish being treated like this. "Ah, your temperature has definitely gone down. At this rate you should be fully recovered later tomorrow or the day after."
"Y/n," he whispered, reaching up and taking hold of your hand. You startled, making a face he remembered well from his time at the Akademiya with you. Your eyes were wide, and you looked a little flushed. If he didn't feel so awful he might have taken the chance to tease you.
"T-Tighnari..? Do you need something?" You asked, seeming a little uncomfortable, or even flustered if he dared to say it.
"Thank you, really. I never noticed you had grown so much. I still remember you as a nervous little student that needed my help studying for biology classes." He smiled a little, pride swelling in his chest. His little junior was excelling at caring for him, rather than the other way around, like it had always been in the past.
"Psh, of course I have," you laughed, "I did learn from the best, after all."
Don't look at me like that, he thought, just barely managing to contain himself. I never could resist that look.
"Well, I really should go clean up. You should eat and then keep resting, and I'll check on you again later."
Don't go, he wanted to say. Your hand slid away from his and you gave him a little wave before leaving him alone.
"Fuck," he muttered, feeling his face go hot and embarrassment wash over him. "Why did I do that! Stupid, stupid!"
He glanced at the soup you had left him and decided that it was in his best interest to do as you asked.
Tumblr media
A few hours later, you came to check on him, as promised. You opened the door, finding him asleep, just as you had expected.
You sat next to him, observing the color that was slowly returning to his cheeks. He had kicked off some blankets, leaving a singular leg tucked under the blankets. He was shivering.
You pulled the blanket back up over his shoulders, taking care not to move too abruptly.
"Y/n…" you heard him mutter sleepily. You glanced at him, expecting to see his pretty eyes fluttering open, instead finding them still tightly shut. He was sleep talking.
You chuckled under your breath and leaned closer, only hesitating a moment before pressing a kiss to his forehead. "Sleep well, Tighnari. I'll see you in the morning."
You left another dose of medicine and some water at his bedside just in case.
Tumblr media
They kissed me, he thought. They kissed me, they kissed me, they kissed me, they kissed me.
He had wanted to grab your hand, make you stay and maybe do it again. He had wanted to throw his arms around you and pull you into a hold you wouldn't be able to escape. He had wanted to tell you how he felt.
He chose not too. Not only had you left too fast, but he was still slightly delirious and reeling from the feeling of your lips against his skin.
A part of him wanted to march out of his room after you and force you to explain yourself, while the other half wanted to hide away and never mention this again.
His only solace was thinking of the coming morning, where surely, this big game of romantic cat and mouse you had been playing for years would finally come to an end.

When you accepted the commission to handle a region plaguing the Avidya Forest, you never expected Tighnari himself to join you. Simply put, you had just assumed that he was too busy with other matters already at hand. Too busy to help you investigate a contaminated region that you could very much handle on your own, at least. The life of a Forest Watcher was a hectic one, you knew that much, so you didn't want to bother Tighnari if he had more pressing issues to tend to.
... Like taking care of a sick child practically on his deathbed, for example.
You and Paimon had made your way to Gandharva Ville in pursuit of the Forest Watcher, but sure enough, he was already preoccupied with something- Or rather, someone- Instead. Laying on the bed in front of him was a small boy who was seemingly passing on his... Will? To Tighnari? It was an unusual sight, considering how you were all crowded in and around Tighnari's office, rather than the village's specialized infirmary.
Not wanting to interrupt anything, you urged Paimon to stay quiet for the time being, and just knocked on the doorframe a few times to let Tighnari know of your presence.
Looking up from where he was standing, the Forest Watcher casually nodded in your direction, before turning his attention back to the child in front of him. Taking it as an invitation, Paimon let herself into the office, darting here and there to get a better look at the two Sumeru residents. You, on the other hand, just watched in silence as the others conversed.
"What happened..? Tighnari is he..." Paimon started, looking over the Forest Watcher's shoulder and completely disregarding your warning of 'be quiet'.
"Okay, okay, enough nonsense. Yara, you just have a small fever. Take your medication and rest. You'll be bouncing off the walls in no time," Tighnari sighed and patted the boy, supposedly named Yara, on the head.
It was just as you'd thought: It wasn't anything deadly if they were in Tighnari's office, instead of the medbay with all of the medicinal supplies. As Tighnari chatted with Yara, you simply pulled Paimon outside by her foot and jokingly teased her about being a worrywart over nothing.
"He's fine, Paimon. Kids tend to exaggerate a lot of things, so chill out a bit, would you?"
"Paimon was just concerned, okay?! And let go of Paimon's foot already!"
"Hmm... Nope. I think I'll be holding onto you for a while longer, considering how easily 'concerned' you are. Who knows? Maybe I'll wander off and get sick myself... I wouldn't want to worry my little pet, now would I?"
"HEY! Paimon is NOT your pet!"
"Oh, that's right! You're my mascot, how could I forget?"
"Wh- TRAVELER! That's worse!!! Paimon is Paimon! Your guide!!!"
The little fairy wriggled in place, resulting in you feigning innocence as you let go of her foot- Sending her flying in a certain direction before she looked back at you and pouted again. You had your hands up in surrender and gave a closed-eyed smile in response.
"Well, don't you two seem close?"
Tighnari chimed in, watching as you and Paimon bantered back and forth. Paimon profusely shook her head at that statement, darting behind the fox as if he were some sort of meat shield.
"Tighnariiii! They're being mean to me!" She wailed, shooting an accusing glance at you afterward.
"Whatever do you mean? Our precious Traveler here? Surely you jest, Paimon. They wouldn't hurt a fly." Tighnari rolled his eyes sarcastically, going over to where you were standing.
You two exchanged glances for a bit before both of your composures broke into hearty laughter. Tighnari cut it short by waving his hand, turning towards you with a gentle smile afterward.
"What brings you here today, Traveler?"
"Ah- Right! I almost forgot. You see, the situation is..."
Tumblr media
"Hmm, I see... So the contaminated region is the cause of all of these problems, just as I'd predicted..." Tighnari wondered aloud, putting a hand to his chin in a thinking position.
Paimon fluttered around curiously, staring at the fox as he was lost in thought. "You already knew of this, Tighnari?" She asked bluntly, tilting her head to the side. The Forest Watcher just nodded, before speaking up again.
"I've been keeping a close eye on this area for a while. As things are now, it's extremely dangerous for anyone who doesn't possess a vision to just waltz on in there. If a regular person were to get lost in that area, the side effects could be fatal— Possibly deadly, if they aren’t careful." Tighnari let out a low groan, bringing his hand up to massage the bridge of his nose in annoyance.
"Over the past few days, several people have been affected by this area and required my immediate attention. As scatterbrained and troublesome as they are, I couldn't just leave those goons on their own, so I never had the chance to investigate the region myself. I've had a few rangers close off the area, but by some miracle, there always seems to be someone who slips past my efforts."
"You mean like Yara..? Didn't he go into the contaminated zone?"
Tighnari sighed, shaking his head at Paimon's question. Crossing his arms over his chest, he tried explaining the situation thoroughly.
"Yes, he did. I just said that he had a small fever to console him, but the recovery process might take longer than I'd like to admit. Luckily, his case wasn't as bad as the others, which was why I was treating him in my office. He'll be fine, but the fastest way to cure him and the others would be to take care of the problem at its source."
Listening to his story, your gaze absent-mindedly went back to the direction of the Forest Watcher's office, where Yara rested. Shifting in place, you mirrored the fox's stance subconsciously- Arms crossed over your chest, completely closed off.
"Tighnari..."
The man in question relaxed a bit after hearing you say his name, letting his arms fall to his sides. Placing a hand on his hip, Tighnari gave you a sympathetic, reassuring smile in response.
"I don't blame him for it, don't worry. Yara's just a child, after all- He didn't know any better. All he knew was that he wanted to play, and just so happened to wander off into the wrong area of the forest. My top priority is to nurse him back to health, so if you'd let me... May I join you to deal with the contaminated region?"
Tumblr media
Tighnari then explained that joining you would be like killing two birds with one stone; he would get to deal with the forest's pestering issue at its heart, and both of you would be able to complete your individual goals as you did so. You had no objections with his reasonings of course, apart from his curt little remark to you, before you all set off.
"This way, I can also spend more time with you, Traveler. It's been a while since you've visited, you know?"
Oh, what a sly fox this man was...
"Oi! Stop flirting and get a move on, you two! The forest isn't going to heal itself!"
Before you could say anything in return, Paimon called from a few meters away- Rather loudly, in fact. She really was acting like a toddler, wasn't she? An attention-hogging, hunger-driven one, at that.
"What is she, your child or your guide?" Tighnari asked out in a light-hearted manner, playfully nudging your arm.
At this point, you didn't know yourself. Exchanging a mutual glance with Tighnari, you just shook your head and smiled, before going after your floating companion. The Forest Watcher chuckled at this, following right behind you.
"If she's my child, then I'm definitely not ready to be a single parent."
"Oh? Is this an invitation, Traveler?"
"Think of it as you wish, Tighnari."
You didn't see it, but as you were walking, his tail was swaying ever-so-slightly.
Tumblr media
Before you knew it, a whole day had already come and gone. Throughout the span of a few hours, your little party of three went to Sumeru City, Avidya Forest, back to the city, and then back into the forest again. The sun was already beginning to fall by the time you and Tighnari had figured everything out, with the help of Paimon scouting here and there.
Ley Line anomalies, yet again. Something about inconsistencies within the Ley Lines was causing the forest to act up the way it was. There were no animals present, the plants were either wilting or emitting a strange glow, and most of all... There were ruin machines everywhere.
Your party was lucky enough to run into a very peculiar machine, though; a crab-like robot who was serving as your guide through the forest. It held no human intelligence, but it was eagerly driven by spare parts, so Tighnari brought it along to make venturing through the forest easier. As things stood now, the robot didn't pose a threat to you, plus it even guided you past dangerous areas and helped you find a spot to camp for the night. Tighnari occasionally gave it spare parts, as rewards for its helpfulness.
Speaking of, Paimon and that crab-like robot were already long gone, off to search for food... Which left you and Tighnari to set up the camp alone. Your original task was to start the fire, but with your past adventuring experiences, you got it going within the span of a few minutes. Feeling bad for Tighnari, who was trying to set up a huge tent all by himself, you decided that you might as well lend a helping hand. Right now, you were holding it in place and initiating small talk as the Forest Watcher secured it to the ground.
"You really didn't need to call me a 'lummox' earlier, you know?" You pouted childishly, watching as the fox tinkered away at the tent.
Tighnari's ears twitched at this, and he leaned to the side so he could get a better glimpse of you. Smiling playfully, he went along with your little quip before getting back to work.
"Would you prefer it if I called you a blubbering airhead, instead? Ah- Hold that down for me, would you?"
"I'd prefer it if you didn't call me any of those at all!" You laughed, obeying his order and keeping your grip firm.
Finally finishing the tent, Tighnari stood up and dusted himself off, glancing around the campsite one last time. Nodding to himself, he then walked over to where you were crouching and extended a hand in your direction, urging for you to take it. As you silently thanked him, Tighnari lifted you up carefully, bringing you back to your feet. You stumbled a bit, but managed to regain balance with the help of him holding onto your shoulders.
Watching as you brushed yourself clean, the fox smiled fondly at you, before reaching out and wiping some dirt off of your cheek. Sevens knew how you even got dirt on your face to begin with, but that wasn't important right now. All you could focus on was the Forest Watcher, who was holding you as if you could slip away from his grasp at any fleeting moment.
"Tighnari..? What's up?"
You looked at him in confusion, but Tighnari didn't retract his hand. Instead, he just left it there, cupping your face gently as his own features softened.
"You know I say those things to you endearingly, right?"
"Huh? What do you mean by tha—"
"TRAVELERRRR! TIGHNARI!!!" A voice wailed, interrupting whatever little moment you just had.
Paimon flew over, on the verge of a breakdown, blabbering about how she "couldn't find any food and all the animals were gone and the forest was so dark and scary and she's never had trouble scavenging before and now they wouldn't have dinner and—"
Tighnari let go of you, and made his way to where Paimon wept. He patted her head and ruffled it a bit, attempting to console her and tell her that he wasn't expecting much to begin with. You, on the other hand, were left dumbfounded and holding your cheek where his hand was, just a moment ago. It seemed like Paimon didn't notice what you two were doing, before she came over.
"Alright, enough of that. I came prepared, so just give me a moment, would you?"
Sighing once more, Tighnari let go of Paimon and went over to the tent, momentarily disappearing inside of it before walking back out. In his arms was a large brown bag, one you saw him occasionally opening and closing throughout the day. Kneeling by the campfire, the Forest Watcher proceeded to open the bag once more, just to pull out an assortment of fresh fungi, a skillet, and a small paring knife.
Paimon sulked for a bit longer, sniffled, and then drew her attention to the simmering sounds now coming from in front of her. Noticing that her dinner was not, in fact, ruined, her face lit up once more as if she didn't just have a mental breakdown minutes prior. Wiping her eyes, the little fairy just went over to you and watched as Tighnari made quick work with his blade.
"Tighnari? What are you making?" Paimon asked out, the sweet aroma of grilled mushrooms filling her nose. The fox just hummed in response as he placed a few herbs on the skillet, observing as they turned a crispy golden color.
"A mushroom hodgepodge. I've been foraging and collecting some edible fungi, while we were out and about," Tighnari replied, skillfully flipping the mushrooms with a flick of his wrist.
Controlling the skillet with one hand, the fox rummaged through his bag with the other, pulling out three large leaves. Offering them to Paimon, Tighnari smiled as he watched her grab two of the leaves, giving one to you. You and Paimon exchanged confused glances, before examining the leaves handed to you. They were thick and had a very smooth feel to them. Rubbing your thumb along the edge of the leaf, you noticed that they were rather waxy, too.
"Here, hold it out. The mushrooms are hot, so eat slowly," he instructed, portioning the meal on the three leaves. Both you and Paimon watched in wonder, as the steam floated off of the grilled fungi.
"Woah!!! Even though it's steaming, Paimon can't feel the heat on her hands at all! And the mushrooms are so pretty too hehe!~" Paimon cooed, kicking her feet with a giddy smile on her face.
"These leaves have a thick layer of wax, which helps regulate temperature well. They're easy to find around these parts, and we forest watchers use them as makeshift plates all the time," Tighnari explained, smiling as you and Paimon gawked at the meal. He was mostly smiling at you, though. The expression you had was just priceless, with stars practically in your eyes.
Setting aside the empty skillet, Tighnari sat back with his own leaf in hand, gently blowing on it to cool the food down. Picking up one of the mushrooms, the fox took a bite and motioned for you two to do the same.
"Well? The food isn't going to enjoy itself, now is it?"
"Kulilu?"
"Eh?"
All three of your heads turned towards the mechanical voice at once. Sure enough, the robot was back, with a variety of fruits at that. Stomping on the ground a few times, the crab-like robot made an odd chirping noise in expectance.
"Huh, would you look at that? Did you bring those back for us?" Tighnari asked out, watching the strange robot as it bounced in place.
"Ooh, Paimon gets it! It wants another mechanical part, right?"
"Hmm, I see... Sorry, but no part this time."
"Kulilu?!" The robot made another odd noise, before dramatically collapsing on the ground.
You laughed at this, quietly eating your food as you watched Tighnari banter back and forth with the robot. Was he really bickering with a machine? His ears were pressed flat against his head, and you could see his brows furrow with slight annoyance. If you didn't know any better, you would think that he was genuinely upset with a living being.
"That task wasn't important enough. If every little thing resulted in a reward, you might start taking advantage of the system. You'll get a part when the time comes." The Forest Watcher let out an exasperated sigh, and patted the robot on its 'head' as if he were a parent consoling a child.
"You treat it as if it's your kid, Tighnari. Why don't you give it a name, too?" You chuckled, hiding your smile when he looked at you through tired, half-lidded eyes.
"What, suddenly I'm its guardian? I'm starting to pity you, if this is what you have to deal with on the daily—"
"Oi! Paimon isn't a child! How many times does Paimon have to say it?!"
"Oh, I beg to differ."
"It looks like we both became parents, huh? Pfft- Wh?! Hey, Paimon! Don't steal my food, come on!"
"Too bad! If Paimon really IS your kid, then she deserves to have as much of your food as she wants! Hmph!"
"Goodness, you two certainly are a rowdy bunch, aren't you?"
Happily chatting away, with the robot peacefully "sleeping" in the corner, the three of you finished your meal in contentment. Before you knew it, night had fallen, the fire was burning low, and the quiet atmosphere of the forest was finally settling in. Tighnari had offered to keep watch first, so after you helped clean the area, you bid him goodnight and headed into the tent to sleep.
Tighnari watched fondly, as you tucked Paimon into bed and brushed her hair aside, before going to sleep yourself.
"... A parent, huh?"
Tumblr media
You weren't sure how many hours had passed, but you awoke when you felt something shift next to you. Turning over, you let out a low hum and opened your eyes slowly, adjusting to the darkness. In front of you was a large figure- At least, larger than Paimon, whom you fell asleep next to.
"Ah- Sorry, did I wake you up?" Tighnari asked out quietly, lifting the blanket and making some room for himself.
You just shook your head and yawned, sitting up and rubbing your groggy eyes. Scooting over, you stayed silent as Tighnari made himself comfortable on the makeshift bed.
"Nnng... It's fine... Where's Paimon?" You questioned, squinting and looking around the tent.
You were completely disoriented, and reality just felt like a huge fever dream right now. As your eyes adjusted, you saw that outside was still pitch black, probably around midnight right now. Tighnari was sitting next to you, moving his tail out of the way so he didn't take up most of the bed. Paimon was nowhere to be found, but the faint tingling noise from outside reassured you.
"She's on watch duty right now. I'm not sure how I feel about her ability to perform, though..." Tighnari responded to your question, nodding towards the general direction Paimon was in.
You hummed out a response, letting another yawn escape your lips as you shifted in place. The Forest Watcher next to you tilted his head curiously, observing you under the faint moonlight that found its way through the tent's fabric.
"What are you doing?"
"I'm gonna go keep her company. That little thing probably fell asleep while floating..." You sighed, stretching a bit before slowly hoisting yourself up.
"Ah, wait-"
"Hmm?"
You felt something warm grab your wrist, just as you were about to head outside. Looking down, you saw Tighnari's hand, gently holding the area between your wrist and your palm. Confused, you turned your head to look at him, only to be met with averted eyes. He cleared his throat, before speaking up again.
"... Stay here. The robot's awake and is currently looking after her, so you can sleep some more."
Easing a little, you sat back down and nodded at his words. Staying still for a bit, the two of you listened to the quiet chirps of the grasshoppers outside in awkward silence. Tighnari's hand was still holding onto you, although now, it was relaxed and currently resting on top of yours. He didn't say anything, like he was anticipating for you to either pull away or to speak up about it.
"Tighnari..?"
"Sorry... This is really uncharacteristic for me, right?"
Retracting his hand, Tighnari cleared his throat, before laying down. Was he too bold? Turning his head away from you, he closed his eyes and went silent again, resting both of his hands over his stomach. You heard him take a few deep breaths, and he opened his eyes slightly, gazing into the distance despite only being able to see the tent's walls.
It seemed like he was trying to look everywhere except for where you were. What's up with that?
Still sitting up, you just watched Tighnari curiously, before mirroring his movements. Laying down next to him, you stared at the tent's roof for a while, and attempted to fall back asleep. However, something just... Didn't seem right. Or rather, it felt like there was something left unspoken, that just didn't sit right with you.
Rolling over, you tucked an arm under your head and faced Tighnari, just staring at him. You didn't say anything, and remained silent as you watched his chest rise up and down in time with his breathing. From this angle, he was really...
"Is something the matter?"
"Ah-!"
Blinking a few times in surprise, you watched as Tighnari rolled over to face you, mirroring your movements this time. He was finally looking at you again. Giving you a small smile, his expression softened, and he reached out with his free hand... Just to poke you on the forehead.
"What? Are you having trouble sleeping?" He asked out, chuckling.
Bringing his hand back, the Forest Watcher gazed into your eyes with complete fondness, that you had to avert your own gaze in embarrassment. Unfortunately for you, in the position you were in, it was extremely difficult for you to hide the growing redness rising from your neck to the tips of your ears. Tighnari had an extremely clear view of you becoming flustered right before his very eyes.
"N-No, it's just... Ah... You looked... Pretty. That's all. You always do, actually. I... I just-" You cleared your throat a little, turning your head away sheepishly.
There was another moment of awkward silence, and you shifted into your original position, laying flat on your back. Tighnari was still facing you, but this time, his eyes were wide and his ears were perked up slightly. Did he hear you correctly? "Pretty"? Is that what you said?
"..."
"..."
Silence. Again.
Goodness, this was just becoming painful, now.
"... Haah, I can't go to sleep like this," Tighnari sighed, sitting up once more. Looking at you, he ran a hand through his hair and spoke up again.
"Traveler, we need to talk. About... Whatever this is."
You gazed up at him, watching as he vaguely gestured towards the both of you. Taking a deep breath, you sat up too, and nodded at his words.
"What is there to talk about? I believe I've made my feelings pretty clear with you just now, haven't I?" You asked, bringing your knees close to your chest and hugging them.
You heard a faint laugh come from Tighnari, and he shifted in place once more. He was now facing you, crisscrossed with his arms draped over his lap.
"Well, yes, but... I want to hear it from you. I don’t want to jump to conclusions or be brazen about any of this. Especially since..."
He trailed off, bringing an arm up to rub the back of his neck. Sighing for the who-knows-how-many-times that night, Tighnari paused for a bit.
"... Since I... Traveler, what... Am I, to you?"
"Huh?"
Looking at Tighnari briefly, you pondered the question, trying to carefully pick your words. When the right words didn't come up, you bit your lower lip and furrowed your brows slightly.
You couldn't. How could you explain the way you felt about him? How every day felt like an adventure, regardless of whether or not you were on the job? How he was the sweetest, most entertaining person you've ever met, despite already traversing through three other nations? How it hurt, knowing that you couldn't remain by his side, no matter what you may feel.
Tighnari took your silence as an answer.
"... I see. If it's too hard to talk about, we can always leave it for later?"
"Ah! No, wait-"
You reached out your hand, but hesitated again, bringing it back to your chest. When you fell silent once more, Tighnari watched carefully, and his ears flattened against his head.
"Am I... Just another face in your adventure? We're both busy people, I understand that. It was a miracle fate brought us together in the first place, even more so that you're in front of me right now. I'm not asking you to stay, but..."
"I like you... Tighnari."
"..!"
Perking up, the Forest Watcher looked at you in surprise, as if he believed his ears were playing tricks on him. You were staring back at him, hand clutching your shirt where your heart was. You could feel it pounding rapidly, and with those large ears of his, you swore that Tighnari could hear it, too.
"I like you. A lot. But... We both know that I can't stay in Sumeru."
"... That's alright with me. Knowing you feel the same is enough."
Tighnari stayed silent, a warm feeling blossoming in his chest. Looking at you, he felt comfort and pure bliss, for what seemed like the first time in an eternity. You, a traveler from beyond the sea of stars, sitting right in front of him with the moonlight caught in your adorable, messy bedhead. You, a traveler who's been through so much, but always persevering and aiding others. You, a mere traveler...
His traveler.
Extending a hand towards you, Tighnari cupped your face gently, looking at you through half-lidded eyes. Caressing your cheek with his thumb, he parted his lips slightly, as if he wanted to say something, but paused again. You just leaned into his palm, looking at him with the warmest gaze imaginable as you urged him to speak.
"... May I..?" He asked out, taking a glance at your lips, before making eye contact.
You responded by giving him a tender smile, to which his expression softened before he drew closer.
The kiss was slow and gentle. Tighnari took his time, and you melted into his embrace almost immediately. When you two finally pulled away, there was a brief moment where you just stared at each other in awe, before you found your lips colliding again. And again. Each time was slightly more passionate than the last.
After it was over, Tighnari held you close, pressing your foreheads together as he breathed out in relief. You heard him chuckle, before he gave the two of you some distance.
"You have... No idea how long I've wanted to do that."
His expression was bittersweet; a mix of relief, guilt, and satisfaction was all visible in his omni-colored eyes. You gazed back at him with the same amount of longing, bringing your hand up to clutch his, which was still holding your face.
"Ahaha~ It’s better late than never, right?"
"Mm... We have a lot of lost time to make up for, then."
Tighnari placed a small kiss on your head, brushing your hair back carefully with his free hand. Pulling away, he smiled and watched as you laid back down on the bed. Perhaps you were finally getting sleepy, now? In the darkness, you extended your arms out toward him, urging for him to join you. Exhaling deeply, the Forest Watcher shook his head, before obliging and making himself comfortable in your arms.
As you stroked his head, you heard a faint swishing sound coming from underneath the covers. Tighnari buried himself in the crook of your neck, with his arms wrapped around your waist.
"Is that your tail wagging..?"
"Ahem! We can... Discuss that tomorrow morning."
"Right... Ah-! How are we going to explain this to Paimon?"
"What, your child of a fairy?"
"No no no, OUR child, now. I told you I wasn't ready to be a single parent."
"Ahaha~ And I suppose I'm actually taking you up on that invitation, huh? Well... Let's just focus on getting some rest, first. We won't be able to do anything, if we oversleep."
"Not so bad if I'm cuddling you, to be honest. Haha... Good night, Tighnari."
"Mmm... Sleep tight, my dear Traveler."
Nestled in the comfort of each other, you and Tighnari drifted off to sleep in a matter of seconds. Needless to say, that was probably the best rest you both had in a while.

| The Capabilities of a Man |
Afab!Gn!Reader x Tighnari
Warnings: MINORS DNI THANKS, Brief Smut, Mutual Pining but their both oblivious idiots (not really explicitly said), Friends with Benefits relationship, Reader is an alchemist that works alongside Albedo & Sucrose, Reader is from Mondstadt, No pronouns for reader, He/Him for Tighnari, Tighnari takes off your shirt consensually, Reader is a sensitive baby bc me too bestie, Afab reader, Gender neutral reader, Biting, Scratching, Nightmares/Night terrors, Hyperventilating, No mentions of breasts but there’s alludings to it if you squint, the pacing of this is a little off but oh well, 1.9k words.
“Fuck me, it’s hot.” You exclaimed, putting a hand above your forehead to block out the sunlight.
Although the weather in Sumeru was hard to adapt to, there was fortunately so much to be explored, or in your case, researched. You were sent from Mondstadt to do research on the local fungi lifeforms in the area. It was already proving boring and easy work to say the least, but the fact of boredom disappeared the moment you ran into him.
“Well, what do we have here? Didn’t think I’d run into you here of all places.” You heard a familiar voice say.
Looking up you saw the face of the familiar voice, Tighnari.
“Hey, it’s you! How’re you, uh, how are things?” You tried to make conversation but ended up coming off nervous..
“Just patrolling the forest, making sure idiot adventurers don’t stray too far from the path.” He sighed. “The usual. But the real question is why are you here? You’re very far from home.” He asked.
You sighed and gave up on appearances. You’d think sleeping with the man in front of you a few times would make you loosen up around him, but you would be very wrong. There was something about him that made the tension so thick and so palpable that anyone could feel it just by looking at the two of you.
“I was sent here by the chief alchemist on a research mission, as well as to collect some data on the lifeforms that live in these forests.” You replied, more focused on Tighnari than your research.
Tighnari looked behind him towards the lit up forest ranger houses, and then back to you with a concerned expression. “Well, it’s getting dark, too dark for proper research. Let’s get you inside.” Before you could even protest he said, “Come on, you can stay with me for the night, then we’ll find you a proper place tomorrow.”
He grabbed your hand without warning, causing you to tense up and become hot with embarrassment, and led you back to his home. Once you were inside the place you took a moment to look around and study the surrounding area. Inside it was lit up by candlelight, and a lone lamp that's design was quite elaborate, yet tasteful. Looking around at the rest of his living area you could tell just how passionate of his work he was, and you expected nothing less from your old friend.
Friend. Heh, life sure is a bitch.
At least that’s all you could say to reason with the dull aching in your chest. It was as if the archons were taunting you, playing a sick game of cat and mouse. Seeing how long it would take to make you surrender, but you were tougher than nails, stronger than most people realized, so you lived on. Unfortunately, the downside was that you slept with a man on occasion who you had deep feelings for, who you knew didn’t feel the same. Still, you chose to torture yourself, and instead of the plethora of opportunities you had to speak your truth were left to die on your tongue.
Turning your attention back to Tighnari, both gratefully and regretfully—joyous to see him again, but sad to live the same ending over and over, again—you watched as he made the bed. His bed. The bed you’d most likely be sleeping in, beside him. After all, you both had already had sex, so what else was there to hide? What’s the worst that could happen?
After he’d finished preparing the bed he gestured gently for you to crawl in, but still keeping his distance. “Get some sleep, please.” He said, exhaustion dripping from his voice.
You crawled into bed hesitantly and asked quietly, “What about you?”
He smiled and shook his head. “I’ll be fine, you go ahead. I’ll stay up and keep watch.”
You shook your head angrily and grabbed his wrist. “No, you need sleep too. Get in the bed, ‘Nari.”
His ears pricked up then flattened as he looked away in embarrassment. He couldn’t win when you used that nickname of his, it was his kryptonite. “Fine.” He said begrudgingly and slid in bed beside you.
He turned off the lamp on his nightstand and let out a comfortable sigh as he snuggled underneath the covers. He enjoyed this, he missed you, more than he was willing to admit. The forest was unusually quiet that night, too much for Tighnari’s liking, especially when he had you sweating beside him. He knew you weren’t used to the weather, but he was still a tad surprised by your ability to become so hot so quickly.
“Are you comfortable?” He asked.
“M-me? Oh yeah, I’m okay.” You lied.
He let out a small groan and turned on his side, taking some of the blanket with him. “If you’re gonna lie to me, at least do a better job.”
You swallowed hard and tried not to let the tears surface, biting back your cries of shame.
Then, he spoke up, again. “If you’re still hot you’re going to have to remove some clothes.”
You knew Tighnari was blunt, but maybe it had been awhile since you both had truly seen each other. The ache in your chest began to grow as did the sweat pooling over and under your chest. It was hot, hotter than you realized and as much as you hated to admit it, he was right, but you could’ve at least tried to hold out, and so you did. Well, you tried to, but Tighnari got annoyed very quickly.
He turned back over to face you and placed his hands on the sleeves of your shirt. “Let me.” He waited for your nod of approval before removing your shirt.
You were embarrassed, sure, but at that point the heat became too unbearable and you had given up on fighting him.
“Better?” He asked, and you nodded in agreement. “Good. Now, get some sleep.”
The rest of the night went by smoothly, you slept through the sounds of the forest and the soft snores of your friend. You’d finally cooled down, even let go of your shame enough to unknowingly wrap yourself around the forest ranger. It was peaceful in the purest of ways. That is until a horrible nightmare ripped you from your peaceful slumber. You tossed and turned frantically, causing Tighnari to stir awake where he watched you like a hawk, making sure you were okay, but that was before you started to hyperventilate. That’s when Tighnari tried to wake you from that dreadful nightmare, carefully.
“Can you hear me?” He asked calmly, but feeling frantic on the inside. He was worried sick.
When he asked a couple times to no response, he then decided to wrap you up in his arms and sit you upright. Wanting to make sure you didn’t have any breathing complications. He waited patiently, shushing you softly and rocking you gently in his arms, until you awoke with a gasp. He let you have a moment to catch your breath before he talked to you.
“Are you okay?”
Silence.
“Do you know where you are?” He asked hastily.
You nodded and pushed the words out. “Tigh.. Tighnari’s house.”
“Good. Now, make sure you’re breathing in nice and slow, okay?” He said firmly yet gently.
You did as he said for a solid five to ten minutes before looking into his eyes. Tighnari watched as the light slowly returned to you, and gave you a great big hug. “You had me so worried.” He pulled away momentarily, studying you as he asked. “Are you okay, now?”
You nodded with a sad smile. “Yes, I am. Don’t worry.”
“A bit late for that.” He teased with a playful smile.
There was a brief moment of silence before you spoke up, placing your hand on one of his cheeks. “Can we hold off on sleep for a while? I’m a bit scared to go back to sleep to be honest…”
He nodded and gave you another hug, this time tighter. You could smell his natural musk and it was intoxicating, along with the feel of his skin against yours. “Of course, we can.”
Pulling away he laid you back onto the bed and turned on the lamp. He wanted to see your face illuminated with light just once before you had to leave. Even if it was only for a mere moment, he wanted to indulge in that small blessing. Laying beside you he found his wandering hands finding your still ones, and entangling them together he hummed an unfamiliar song. If it weren’t for your recent rude awakening you would’ve found yourself asleep to the tune of the song, but instead you couldn’t help but focus on how warm his body and hands were. It was as if they were luring you closer and closer towards him until, finally the distance closed altogether as he sealed his lips against yours.
It took you by surprise at first, which was surprising considering the past you two shared, but still, you found yourself full of shock once he grabbed your face gently and pressed his lips to yours. But instead of questioning it, denying him the pleasure of your lips, or even pushing him away, you just let it happen. You enjoyed the bliss from beginning to end, pretending as if you had no problems risking your dignity or pride, but there was so much at risk with him. There were always risks when it came to Tighnari, but this time you let go, fully and unapologetically and simply allowed him to embrace you just as you were.
Soon kisses became touches and touches became something more, till the two of you were tangled in the sheets with only your bare bodies for comfort. His nails dragged against your back as he pumped himself inside of you, moaning in your ear like a starving man. Your fingers tangled in his hair, tugging at it roughly for more than he could offer up. His hands pinned you down by your wrists and let go of his judgements and worries, he fucked into you at an unforgiving pace.
It was almost as if he was chasing something. You? The archons? Or a righteous answer? Who knows, but one thing was for sure, he’d never flown higher than he had in that very moment. The both of you had scratch, bit, and moaned your way through the thick darkness and only stopped when the both of you grew weary. Too tired to keep going, but somehow managing to do so anyway. This cycle continued till the both of you eventually fell asleep naked in each other’s arms. Maybe, things could be different you told yourself, maybe come morning you could confess your long lived secrets, and perhaps things could turn out good for you after all.
For now, you’d bask in the warmth of Sumeru in the company of your (hopefully) soon to be lover. For now you’d enjoy a moment untouched by ruin and simply be, which is exactly how it was all meant to be.

To Dream in Shades of Green
Word Count: 55.7k (9/9 Chapters)
Relationship: Alhaitham/Kaveh
Tags: Pseudo-isekai, Royalty AU (kind of), Dreams, Fluff, Mutual Pining, You get a slow burn and a flash flood, we're speedrunning and slow-cooking this relationship, light angst, happy endings, feeling realization
Written for Haikaveh Big Bang!
(Note: This story will be updated daily until its completion!)
Summary:
“There are three suitors who you can romance in this game. You must complete all your requirements with one of them." “Who are the three potential suitors?” Kaveh asks warily. “Your three suitors are Tighnari, the blunt Palace Chamberlain; Cyno, the standoffish Captain of the Royal Guard; and Al-Haitham, the acerbic Duke of Vultur Volans.”
There's a new invention from the Yae Publishing House that turns a user's dreams into light novel stories. Kaveh has the (un)fortunate pleasure of being one of its first users.
Too bad it dumped him in a romance game.
Read it here!
Author's Comments:
This story has been ruminating in me for months now you don't understand they have taken over my life. Otome games were my reading blood for a good bit of time
We're in for a long ride is all I'm saying (This story is about 55k words)
There's a lot of romance, a lot of light novel tropes, a lot of royalty tropes. So many cliches. But despite all that, I hope it's a lighthearted story about what love is—not just in stories, but also in real life; what it means to care

Albedo
Having a crush on the Chief Alchemist didn't stop you from diligently working alongside him. You made sure to push your feelings away while you worked, but unbeknownst to you, Albedo had a hard time concentrating around you. You were always confident he never made mistakes, yet, he made them often around you.
"Is everything okay, Master Albedo?"
You ask over another failed experiment of his as it smoked pitifully, filling the room with a horrid smell, "This isn't like you. Do you want to take a break?" you inquire sweetly, plugging your nose and fanning the fumes away from him, "Let me put on a pot of tea-"
"That won't be necessary, allow me."
Albedo finally speaks, his voice like honey, sweet and gentle, "It will be a nice change of pace, so please-" he says, a faltering look in his aquamarine eyes, as if he wanted to tell you something else, but stopped himself.
Tilting your head to the side, you give him a curt nod, as a worrying expression crosses your face. Was it something I said?
"Y/N, may I be honest with you?"
Your heart sinks at his sudden question, "O-of course, Master Albedo," you say quietly, fidgeting with your fingers as he pours you a cup of tea, "What is it?" you were afraid to press further.
"You. .you're always on my mind. I can't focus on my work because your smile lingers on my mind."
"W-what?"
Did you hear that correctly? Was he confessing to you? You were sure you were about to receive the worst news possible. Still, in fact, it was quite the opposite, "What I'm trying to say. Formulate. .well, it appears that I'm in love with you," he finally manages to say, a rosy hue decorating his perfect complexion.
You felt as if your heart would burst from your chest from the immense happiness coursing through your veins, and smiling at him; you grasped his hand softly. Now was your chance to tell him how you really feel and with a brave look, you speak up.
"The feeling is mutual. .I-I love you too."

Tighnari
Studying quietly next to Tighnari, you sigh gently. You have been tasked with sorting the poisonous plants from the non-poisonous ones, a quiz of sorts your master gave you, the very master you fell in love with a long time ago.
"How are you doing?"
Tighnari's voice rang out as you detached from your concentration, "O-oh! I'm doing fine, thank you for asking. I'm almost finished~," you say joyfully as he peers over your shoulder, uncomfortably close.
"Well done, Y/N. You never cease to amaze me with your talents in Botany."
Tighnari nods, tail swishing happily at your accomplishments and blushing furiously; you hide your face as he leans further into you, his back touching yours as he chuckles at your cute expression, "T-thank you, Master!" you manage to stutter out, trying so hard to calm your beating heart, but he made that quite difficult.
"U-uhm, you're really close.."
"Is that so? I can be even closer to you~."
He muses, as he presses further into you, his chest now firmly planted against your back as he wraps his arms around you protectively. Tighnari's ears droop and you can feel the heat of his breath on your neck, "I want to continue being close to you like this if you'll have me," he confesses.
Having heard that, you were in disbelief, wondering if he was joking or not, but the way his arms wrapped around you clarified his feelings as you felt his heart pound against your back.
"Can you repeat that?"
You ask shyly, your face growing redder by the second as you intertwine your fingers with his, and with a quick adjustment, you face him head-on. His facial expression flushed, and his ears were flat against his head as he looked away, his tail wagging furiously.
At this point you couldn't take the deafening silence any longer, yet, much to your surprise Tighnari is the one to make the first move as he presses his lips against yours sweetly.
"I love you, Y/N. ."

Gorou
Gorou's optimism was infectious and one of the many reasons you fell in love with him. Grinning happily beside him, you prepare your bow for shooting practice, "Ready, General?" you ask, taking out an arrow from your quiver. Unfortunately for you, you weren't a good shot, but Gorou's endless sanguinity kept you going strong.
"I'm ready! Now remember to keep your bow steady, don't be nervous; I'm right here!"
Gorou says as he flashes you a toothy smile, and he positions himself behind you as you draw back your bow, aiming, "Perfect form! Now shoot~," and doing as he instructs, you release your arrow, and you swallow with anticipation as the arrow whizzes through the air. With a mighty thunk, it hits the bullseye and you squeal in delight.
"I DID IT! Did you see that, General?!"
"Well done, Y/N! Practice makes perfect! I'm so proud of you~"
And in his brief dilettantism, he rushes up to you, hugging you, then twirling you around as you both giggle in delight, "It's all thanks to you, General~," you muse happily, and then realizing your proximity, you blush furiously, yet he didn't let go. Instead, his soft aqua eyes stare at you lovingly.
"G-general?"
You try to catch his attention, but he simply smiles at you, "You look beautiful wielding a bow. . ." he murmurs. And for some reason, your face begins gravitating towards his, closing the gap with your lips, kissing him sweetly, and just as quickly, you pull away, obviously embarrassed.
"I-I am so sorry. .I dont know what came over-"
And before you could finish your sentence, Gorou reciprocates, kissing you passionately, his tail wagging happily as his ears hang. As he pulls away he smiles happily at you.
"You have no idea how long I've waited to do that. . ."
