It’s PRIDE MONTH GUYS WHOO! Here’s my contribution for day one of @thunder-pride You can also read it over on AO3 if that’s easier :) I nearly got a full bingo, but not quite... which just means I’ll have to write more at some point!
In the meantime have 1.7k of Kayo and Alan.
Something was bothering Alan.
After several days of observation, this was the grand conclusion which Kayo had reached. Ordinarily it would have taken her far less time, but she’d been needed in both hemispheres at the same time for a week straight and so had spent much of her days flitting between rescues, various GDF tasks and aiding Penelope with a lead they’d been tracking for the past five months now. But during her rare hours at home, she’d become aware that Alan was acting sort of… off. More so than usual, anyway, which was saying a lot given he was a weird little nerd on the best of days.
Ordinarily, Kayo would have pushed the thought to the back of her mind. She was exhausted after her non-stop week and had to admit that she’d hit her limits. Her flight hours were so far in the red that John had threatened to remotely disable Shadow’s controls and her vision became concerningly blurry if she stood up too fast. Besides, Alan had four brothers and a grandmother to fret over him – he really didn’t need his sister hanging around too.
And yet. Worry slunk out of hiding and settled in her stomach like a leaden weight. She didn’t register it until she was perched on a kitchen counter, scoffing leftovers without even waiting to heat them in the microwave, watching Alan miss an obvious opener for a joke and then plastering a fake smile on his face when Gordon pointed it out.
“I’m just tired,” he claimed, elbowing Gordon as his brother attempted to tackle him off the couch while Virgil lifted his feet out of their path with a wearied sigh of utmost exasperation.
Kayo eyed them suspiciously. Just tired? Yeah, right. She couldn’t have been less convinced if Alan had announced he’d gained the ability to levitate, which was what made it so surprising when Gordon accepted the excuse without hesitation. To give Virgil credit, he looked a little less satisfied with the answer, but didn’t push the matter. He was probably hoping Alan would choose to confide in him of his own free will at a later time. This wasn’t a bad strategy, but Kayo was too impatient to ignore the issue.
She aggressively stabbed her noodles, earning an alarmed look from Brains who had ventured up to the kitchen for a coffee refill despite the fact it was already half-seven in the evening.
“Wow,” John commented, hovering about the holo-projector like a creep.
Kayo pointed her fork at him. “Got something to say?”
Safe in orbit, John raised a brow. “Just that you should sleep.”
“Sleep is for the weak,” she declared. “Brains agrees, don’t you?”
Brains’ gaze flickered from John’s avatar to Kayo’s fork. “I, um, don’t have an o-opinion?”
“Wise choice,” John quipped, whilst Kayo dropped her fork into the sink with a groan.
Despite her grumbling, she did end up crashing on the couch for a few hours. She awoke to dark skies and a patchwork blanket carefully tucked around her shoulders. Someone had put a pillow under her head to save her from neckache.
Her senses were still a little foggy with sleep, but her mind was sharper, reflexes restored to their cat-like speeds. She sat up, scrubbing at her face with her hands. The conversation pit and kitchen were both empty but there was a lone figure sat by the poolside. She peered at them through the gaps between her fingers, yawned, and hauled herself off the couch, curiosity once again piqued to wrestle with a new surge of worry.
It had been a bracingly hot day – not that she had been at home to appreciate it – and some of that heat was still trapped within the tiles. They were warm underfoot while the air remained sticky with humidity. A chorus of nocturnal insects sang cheerily from the vegetation. She tipped her head back to glimpse the sleeping villa. Virgil’s window was still lit, but the others had been extinguished.
“Hey.”
Alan tilted his head slightly in acknowledgement as she dropped down to sit beside him but didn’t say a word. His feet were dunked in the pool, gaze fixed on the expanse of dark ocean without truly seeing it. It reaffirmed Kayo’s suspicion that something was wrong because it was one of the clearest displays of stars that she’d witnessed in quite some time with a new moon and the Delta Aquariid shower reaching its peak, yet Alan seemed oblivious to it.
A few more minutes dragged by in relative silence. Kayo hooked her legs over the poolside and leaned back against the heels of her hands. There was a thin line of tension keeping Alan’s shoulders taut and dark shadows were smeared beneath his eyes from sleepless nights. The worry racked up a notch, creeping up her throat until she couldn’t bear to let him look like a kicked puppy for even a second longer.
“So,” she began lightly, knocking their shoulders together to draw Alan’s attention. “What’s eating you?”
Alan knocked his heels against the tiles, sending ripples across the pool. “It’s dumb.”
“Try me.”
“It’s, like, really dumb.”
“Great, I could do with a laugh.”
Alan paled. “Oh god, no, please don’t laugh at me. I mean, it’s dumb, but also…”
“It’s bothering you?”
He lifted his feet out of the water to rest his chin on his drawn knees with a groan. “Maybe.”
Kayo wasn’t Alan’s first choice for advice, but she also wasn’t his last. There were certain subjects which just couldn’t be raised with brothers. And Kayo secretly – although she’d never admit it – loved the fact that Alan felt comfortable confiding in her.
“I won’t laugh at you.” She held out a hand. “See? I’ll even pinkie promise you like a child.”
Alan let out a damp laugh. “Thanks.”
He dragged the back of his hand across his eyes with a sniff. Kayo waited, repressing the urge to ask him to spit it out already. He inhaled deeply then blurted in a rush,
“How-do-you-know-if-you-like-someone?”
Kayo was rarely taken aback, but this was one such instance. “Try that again, but slower.”
“How do you…?” Alan curled inwards slightly as if he could condense himself into a singularity if he really put his mind to it. “How do you know if you like someone?” He ducked his head. “As in, um, like-like them?”
Kayo’s relationship experience consisted mostly of occasional hook-ups and embarrassing crushes which she refused to acknowledge.
“Uh,” she said very eloquently. “I suppose… They make you happy. You feel lighter when they’re around. When something happens, they’re the first person you want to tell. You can never spend enough time with them. That sort of stuff.”
“Oh my god,” Alan whimpered, burying his face in his knees. “This is horrible. Forget I ever said anything. Just go away and let me drown myself in the swimming pool.”
Kayo bit back a laugh. “You’re so dramatic.”
“I literally want to throw myself into the sun right now.”
“It’s not that embarrassing.”
Alan’s voice pitched into a frequency usually only audible to dogs. “We’re talking about feelings, Kayo. This could not get any worse unless Gordon’s secretly recording.” He lifted his chin to glare at said brother’s balcony. “Wait, he’s not, right?”
Kayo gave his shoulder a light shove. “Relax, it’s just us.” She let the silence settle again before venturing, cautiously, “So, um… them?”
Alan was very quiet for a moment, then softly corrected, “Him.”
“Do I know him?”
“Maybe.”
Kayo let a grin dawn on her face. “He wouldn’t happen to be a certain YouTuber, would he?”
“Possibly.” Alan stole a glance at her. “You’re, uh… You don’t seem surprised?”
“Alan, I love you, so please know that it is with fondness when I tell you that watching you try to impress Brandon Berrenger is quite possibly the most excruciating thing I have ever witnessed. And I wasn’t even there for the initial rescue, so I can only imagine how cringeworthy that must have been.”
“Okay, first off, rude. I wasn’t that bad.”
“You followed him around like a little lost puppy. Oh, Brandon, look at me! Aren’t I so cool? Ooh, I fly a rocket, please fall in love with me immediately.”
“Shut up! Also, I don’t sound like that.”
“Eh.”
“Kayo.”
“Alan.”
Alan returned his gaze to the ocean with a huff. “But um…” He took a deep breath. “I meant… you don’t seem surprised that I, uh, like guys.”
“I had my suspicions.”
Alan blinked owlishly at her. “Wait, really?”
“My job is to be observant,” Kayo pointed out gently, trying not to laugh. “I’d be a pretty terrible Head of Security otherwise, wouldn’t I? And you and Brandon? Not exactly subtle, Allie.”
Alan tilted sideways to drop his head on her shoulder. “Don’t remind me. I’m the worst. I have zero verbal filter around him.”
Kayo patted his back sympathetically. “Sucks to be you.”
“Thanks. That’s so helpful.”
The silence which settled was comfortable this time.
“So… just guys, or…?”
“Both,” Alan confessed, twisting his fingers in the hem of his shirt. “I, uh… Both. Both is good. And I think I’ve known for a while, but I figured… maybe I could ignore it? But then I met Brandon and… Yeah. So. Ta da!” He made jazz hands. “Not sure what label I’m vibing with, but I’m definitely not straight.”
Kayo let out an undignified snort. “I’m very proud of you for figuring yourself out and all that fun stuff, but please never make jazz hands again.”
Alan sniggered. “Why not? It’s fun.” He leaned a little closer against her side and peered up at the stars. “I think maybe I’m bi? I don’t know. I’m still figuring it out. But I don’t really want to tell anyone until I understand myself a bit better, so…”
“I won’t say anything.”
“Thanks.”
“You don’t need to thank me for that, dumbass.”
Kayo looped an arm around his shoulders. It was rare for her to dish out so much physical affection in one night, but hey. She’d been in his place before and it had sucked. Being a teenager was confusing enough without sexuality crises.
“Hey, Alan? Thanks for telling me.”
He shrugged. “Thanks for being cool about it.”
“Why wouldn’t I be?”
“I don’t know, I just got all up in my own head and- Anyway. Thanks.”
Kayo grinned. “So, are you going to ask out Brandon or…?”
“Shut up!”

Back in your arms again {pt. III}
Tumblr media
[Pairings]: Tara Carpenter x Reader
[Summary]:“What the fuck’s she doing here?” Zhanna almost spat as you rubbed her arm while looking up at Tara before turning back to Zhanna. “Sh–she just gave me a ride. That’s all.”
[warnings]: swearing, angst (kinda), my writing, not proof-read
A/N: oh, I wanna write for CC so badddddd (from Emma's new movie)
Tumblr media
The next day, you woke up -and Tara, too- to the sound of your phone ringing. You sat up and looked at your phone.
Zhanna.
You rubbed your left eye with one of your hands to get rid of the sleepiness then answered the phone. “Yes?”
“Y/N! Oh thank god, you picked it up!”Zhanna’z voice was shaky as she spoke which immediately made you stand up from your bed- making Tara alert as she silently watched you- and furrow your eyebrows.
“Zhanna? Is everything alright?”
“No! Yes…I don’t know..” She sounded like she was on the verge of tears and you clenched your jaw.
“What happened?”
“I-I..” You could hear she took a deep breath before continuing.” Bao…an-and Andrei. Th-they got into a car accident this morning. “You felt your chest tighten upon hearing her words. “An-and I’M in the hospital right now. They told me..they. “She let out a sob and you swallowed before springing into  action and rushing to get your coat and boots as Tara got up, too.
“It’s okay, Z. Just calm down and continue.”
“They told me that Bao is in surgery as well as A-andrei. Y/N, I–I can’t do this. I can’t lose them.” Your eyes welled with tears as one of your shaky hands went to open the door.
“Al-,,god, alright, Z. I’ll- I’ll be right there, okay? Just hold on.” You tried assuring her, but your own voice betrayed you.
And that's when Tara spoke up. “Y/n…..” You looked up from the doorknob. “You know you can’t drive in a state like this. Come on, I’ll give you a ride.” She said, walking over to you, now fully dressed.
You bit your lip, hesitating before you heard Zhanna’s loud sobs from the other line and slowly nodded, going right after Tara as she opened the door and started walking out of the building.
Once outside, you felt yourself shiver as the cold winter breeze hit you as you rushed towards Tara’s Ford Thunderbird with Zhanna still on the line.
You and Tara got in and the moment the car was out of the parking lot, Tara sped across roads to get to the closest hospital.
Tumblr media
You pushed the doors of the Lenox Hill Hospital, immediately looking around for Zhanna while Tara followed behind you. You sighed shakily before sailing Zhanna’s number once more. After a few seconds, she picked up.
“Z, where are you?”
“I–I..uhm..I think the-the third floor.”
“Okay, okay. Just hang on. I’ll be there in a minute.”
With that you hung up and darted towards the elevator, Tara still hot on your tail. When the doors closed, you slowly glanced at Tara before mumbling a small “Thanks for the ride” to which she nodded.
After about 30 seconds, the elevator stopped and you rushed out of it, running down the corridors until you found a curled up Zhanna on one of the waiting chairs.
“Z” You said quietly before walking up to her and hugging her.
Her body tensed first before she relaxed into your hold and hugged you back. After about two minutes of hugging-and Tara just standing awkwardly-, you pulled away, before Zhanna pulled you down on the chair next to her and sat you down. That”s when she noticed Tara and her soft, crying turned into glaring atTara.
“What the fuck’s she doing here?” Zhanna almost spat as you rubbed her arm while looking up at Tara before turning back to Zhanna. “Sh–she just gave me a ride. That’s all.”
“It better be just that. I’m not in the mood for her.” You swallowed thickly before glancing up at Tara who was just standing, staring at the floor.
Tumblr media
After about an hour and a half, Zhanna was asleep on the waiting chair due to you soothingly rubbing her back for so long. When Tara noticed this, she took the opportunity and sat down next to you, to which your immediate reaction was to scoot away from her. “Just ‘cause you gave me an emergency ride, we are still not on talking terms.”
Tara sighed heavily.”I’ve told you…I’m sorry.”
You looked at Tara with an almost disgusted face. “Sorry is not going to fucking cut it, Carpenter.”
By the way you looked at her, Tara almost thought about giving up. Giving up on you. Giving up on the two of you. But she won’t.
“I know.” She closed her eyes and turned away from you, tilting her head up to face the ceiling.
“God, I already lost too much.” You mumbled as you looked towards the doors that one of the surgeries were held in.
“I can’t lose you guys, too. I wouldn’t be able to…handle that.”
Tara’s closed eyes filled with tears and a lump was starting to form in her throat upon hearing your words, knowing that she indeed, a part of the ‘too much’.
But if only you knew. If only you knew that you still had her. But you didn’t. And she hated it.

Five times Virgil tackled loopy family members, and one time they tackled him (Part Six, Bit 1)
Tumblr media
Part One | Part Two | Part Three | Part Four | Part Five | Part Six - Bit 1
This is an attempt to finish this fic off. Unfortunately, this last part is big and I was unable to fully complete it this morning. But there is some Tracy boy action in this, so I hope you enjoy what should be the first half of the last chapter of this fic.
Now I have to go to work, drat it.
-o-o-o-
…and one time his family had to tackle him.
It was another fire.
Virgil had seen so many wildfires now they were at Tuesday status. Didn’t mean they weren’t tiring.
It was a full team effort and they had been at it for hours in the Californian hills. Virgil wanted to curse the eucalypts that weren’t supposed to be here, but honestly the native pines burned just as much, both full of flammable sap that just set the fires roaring.
At first he had stayed in Two, water-bombing with local fire services and laying down a firebreak to stop it all from getting into suburbia.
There lay the nightmare. The few times a wildfire had breached a city limits were all on Virgil’s most hated rescues list. Not that fire anywhere wasn’t horrible, but the city increased the density of human lives and ever so many more were inevitably lost.
Once the firebreak was set, he went back to slowing it down, but then some fire personnel were trapped and he had to leap out of Two to save them. A family who should have evacuated earlier also found themselves trapped on their property ahead of the fire front and again Virgil was the only one able to reach them.
By this time he already had his firesuit on and with a second thought also grabbed his exosuit. There was no indication it was needed, but he felt much more secure with it on.
Gordon called it his ‘wooby-suit’. Well, once, Virgil’s reaction had been sufficient to nub that one in the bud.
His brother still snickered on occasion when Virgil announced he was suiting up.
His fish brother really was a little shit at times.
A loveable one, but a shit nonetheless.
The house was a two storey at the very end of a cul-de-sac. Its driveway disappeared into the trees and as Virgil landed Two in the path of the oncoming fire, he had a few curse words for those who didn’t follow wildfire prevention protocols.
Two barely fit on the dead-end road, her backend almost nudging one of the other primly neat, ordered and now deserted homes.
At least one garden gnome met a gruesome end.
Virgil barely noticed. Moments and he was running down that winding dirt driveway. It appeared that it was one of those hidden pathways to a lot bigger property. Fortunately, John was in his ear with clear and concise directions.
A house appeared after a decent jog through the trees, Virgil frowned. There was no car packed for an emergency retreat. It all appeared deserted.
Only the backdrop of smoke and the ash drifting on the air gave the landscape any urgency.
“They are sheltering in the basement.” He could hear the frown in John’s voice.
“Well, get them out here. I don’t have time to dig them out.”
“I have been trying. They are quite panicked.”
John was interrupted by Scott. “Thunderbird Two, you are needed on the south-west flank, we have break through.”
“FAB, Thunderbird One. Retrieving two rescuees. ETA in ten.”
“Make it five, we have unevacuated civilians in the fire’s path.”
Again?
What the hell?
“FAB, Thunderbird One.”
Damnit.
The house itself could have stood in for one of those horror films. Tall, two storey, made of wood, not maintained too well. Even its paintwork screamed black and white Hitchcock.
Virgil didn’t bother with the front door, instead scooting around the side of the building to a set of external cellar doors. He banged on the wood with a claw. “International Rescue!” No response. “You called for help?”
“Virgil!” John’s voice was panicked.
A man appeared out of nowhere, yelling something incomprehensible. Virgil staggered backwards at a sharp pain in his arm. Someone else tried to grab him.
What the-?
“Get the damned machine off him! Cut the hydraulics!”
Virgil reacted, spinning where he stood, exosuit arms coming up in defence. Kayo’s instructions chanting in his mind, unbidden.
Disable and run. That’s all you have to do, Virgil. You don’t want to fight. Don’t fight. Run!
He wasn’t very manoeuvrable in the suit, but he was practised. Keep moving. Don’t let them immobilise you!
His right claw was a huge weapon and it barrelled into two men as he spun.
“Goddamnit! Get it right the third time, you idiots!” A woman’s voice and Virgil realised the cellar doors were open. She was climbing out to join the fray.
He spun, hitting someone else. How many were there? What did they want?
Why?
John shouted something in Virgil’s ear. Something about Scott.
Someone jumped onto his back, a hand blocking his vision as it gripped his helmet.
Pain as cold metal cut into the shoulder of his uniform.
Virgil set his feet and disengaged the exosuit, flinging himself away.
He hit dirt as the woman yelled at the men again, but he didn’t give himself time to register what she said, instead launching himself off the ground and running just as Kayo had told him to do.
“Get him, you idiots!”
Virgil’s breath was harsh in his ears as he put everything into his legs towards the safety of Two. His fire suit hampered him and he wished for the umpteenth time in his life that he had Scott or John’s long legs. But life had gifted him with strong, sturdy, and a damn sight shorter. He was literally made for heavy lifting.
And not for running.
But run he did.
For the trees.
His brain screamed at him about the fire hazard, about the glow above those trees, the ash dancing in the air, but he needed cover. A mix of eucalypt and pine waving in the hot wind.
Sparks drifting lazily past.
He wanted to stop and gaze at them but there was a voice urging him on.
And that horrible woman screeching far behind.
The scrub swallowed him whole.
-o-o-o-
“Scott!”
“Thunderbird Two will be available momentarily. We have pods to deploy and slow progress.” Scott stared at the map, suddenly missing Virgil’s input. This was definitely Virgil territory. Maybe he should switch out Gordon for Virg and assign him to control. One could take up the slack. “Yes, Thunderbird Five?”
“Virgil has been attacked. Code Green. Sending you coordinates.”
“What?!” He straightened so fast his back cracked. A glance at the fire chief and he was grabbing his helmet and moving. “Alan, I need One now!”
He didn’t need to ask for further information. As he slapped on his helmet, John threw it at his HUD. A live feed of five assailants chasing the staggering green dot of his brother.
“Virgil’s vitals indicate he may have been drugged. I’m seeing spikes in his heart rate and his direction of retreat has become erratic.” John’s tone was clipped but full of tension. “He will not reach Thunderbird Two before he is overtaken.”
“Call in Kayo and notify the GDF.” He barely heard his own words as Alan dumped One precisely down beside him. Her ladder lowered and his feet were on it before it could hit dirt.
Dust welled up around his ‘bird as Alan launched her back into the air. Scott grabbed the cargo bay railing and secured himself.
“Gordon is inbound with the Dragonfly.” Alan’s voice was as clipped as John’s, not even turning to look at Scott. “ETA twenty seconds.”
“FAB.”
One shot through the thick smoke of the fire front, leaving swirls of grey atmosphere behind it, and emerging out into the clear air of the yet to be burnt.
Evacuated suburbia lay quiet below as Alan threw the Thunderbird to the right and spun down for an abrupt and determined landing in the front yard of someone’s wannabe mansion.
“Stay with One. Keep her secure.” Scott was moving before his littlest brother could protest.
A tactical readout appeared on Scott’s HUD as his feet hit dirt. Gordon’s dragonfly pod touched down beside him, his fish brother’s eyes catching his.
Without words, Scott grabbed onto the pod and Gordon launched her to skim across the ground, closing the little distance between them and the trees.
Thunderbird Two sat quiet beyond the property, her green hull gathering grey ash as firefighting aircraft buzzed about the fire front, a closing distance away.
“Shadow is inbound, ETA ten minutes. A security team in on their way. Colonel Casey has confirmed a response from the GDF as soon the fire has been controlled.”
“What?!” But as Scott’s boots hit the ground again, he didn’t have time to discuss the GDF’s inadequacies. “Virgil’s status?”
“I’m getting no response. He is speaking, but not to me. He appears incoherent.” A pause. “Approach him with caution.” Another pause. “Five assailants still closing.”
Rage leaked through Scott’s composure, but he had no more time for that than he did for the GDF’s failings. “Gordon, you have my six.”
And they were swallowed by the trees.

YMCA-YWCA tries to fend off attempt to build a road near Camp Thunderbird
The YMCA-YWCA of Vancouver Island is preparing for another legal battle to block road construction through wilderness near its Camp Thunderbird site at Glinz Lake in the Sooke Hills.
The commissioner, the chief regulatory authority overseeing mineral claims and leases in the province, had removed the mineral titles after concluding the company, Alberta-based Victoria Teleport Corp., held the mineral rights for three sections of land for purposes other than mining.
Gent said the company is a group of real estate developers. “We believe the primary intent is to try to build a subdivision out there,” he said, noting the YMCA-YWCA joined a complaint filed by the deputy chief gold commissioner in late 2021.
The new hearing comes after Justice Jennifer Lynn Whately ruled last week that the process involved in appealing the commissioner’s decision was vague and unstructured, which meant it was procedurally unfair for Victoria Teleport.
The company’s three mineral claims are landlocked by private lands and Crown land. That means it needs permission from private landowners, in this case the YMCA-YWCA, or the province to access the claim area. While the YMCA-YWCA has allowed foot access to the claims, it has balked at allowing any vehicle access.
“They’ve been trying to get road access to the site for a long time,” said Gent, who noted the entire surrounding area is wilderness. “Our commitment is to protect those lands.”
Gent also noted that some of the Crown parcels in question could be part of treaty negotiations with First Nations.

Tracy Log: 03/08/2066
RESCUE REPORT:
Call received at 13:26, reports of a rambler trapped in an abandoned missile silo some 8 meters below ground.
Call sent by companion (uninjured) stating that the victim had climbed to the apex of the hill- created after the covering of the shelter entrance- in order to film a segment for their YouTube channel.
Upon reaching the top they started filming but the ground they were standing on began to shift, having become unstable due to nearby building work causing heavy flooding in the area.
The platform upon which they were standing -which doubled as a the lid to the silo- crumbled and they fell straight down into the silo.
Thunderbirds 1 and 2 deployed with Scott, Virgil, and Gordon aboard.
Victim knocked unconscious on impact, and didn't regain consciousness until Scott reached the danger zone.
Scott used our jetpack technology to lower himself down in order to assess the victim and secure them for transport.
Unfortunately, due to the nature of the fall and the subsequent injuries, although victim regained consciousness briefly, they were in too much pain. Scott issued painkillers to make them more comfortable, but they succumbed to their injuries before Scott or the team on Thunderbird 2 were able to help.
Reports will be sent, along with our video footage, to the local police force for processing and our standard letter of condolence, as well as resources, has been sent to the bereaved.
END REPORT.
John leaned back, allowing the freedom of Zero-G to support his body as he pressed save on his screen and swiped it away.
He could still hear, could still see, the devastation on his brother's face as he reported that their mission had not been successful. Scott had tried to stay businesslike, to report the facts as they appeared, but John knew it was never that easy.
He watched every rescue as standard, ready to help in any way he could, and he had heard the laboured breathing of the victim, their pain filled crying and the wheezing, rattle in their chest.
They had asked Scott for help and he had promised them he would get them out of there. And he had, he'd helped the only way he could, by making them comfortable and holding their hand as their life had slipped away. And then he'd done his job and gotten them out as promised, just not in the way any of them would have wished.
Losses were inevitable, and they were lucky enough that they didn't have to deal with them that often, but that just made it all the harder when it did.
He wanted to be down there to support his brother, knowing he would be beating himself up about it even though there was nothing anyone could have done, but he still had to file the report with the local authorities and alert the bereavement counsellor they kept on retainer in case the victim's family were in need and couldn't provide their own.
Still, he had a secret weapon that he was merciless in deploying when a situation called for it, and this was definitely that situation.
He pulled up his screen again and touched the little symbol of a witch’s hat.
-x-
Scott’s eyes flew open as the first pounding notes of a song blasted through the speaker system of the lounge.
There went his peace and quiet. Couldn't a man brood alone in this house without some idiot feeling the need to disturb him?
“Why am I not surprised?” he bitched when his sister-in-law slid into the room and struck a dramatic pose. Please don't let her start to sing. He loved her but his temples were already throbbing and he didn't think his nerves could take it.
Thankfully -if you could count that- she stuck to lip syncing along as Tina Turner blasted out her most famous number.
“I call you when I need you, my heart's on fire,” Selene mimed, holding her hands over her heart as she rocked back and forth on the spot. “You come to me, come to me wild and wild.” She gestured to him to stand up and join her, but he folded his arms and resolutely refused, he wasn't in the mood for such silliness. A man had just died, did she not understand that?
“When you come to me, give me everything I need,” Selene continued as if he wasn't glaring a hole into her, she just gyrated on the spot, her head bobbing. “Give me a lifetime of promises and a world of dreams, speak a language of love like you know what it means.”
She settled into a power pose stance and prepared for the first big moment of the song.
“Mmm, and it can't be wrong, take my heart and make it strong, baby…” She paused in her bouncing sway to make sure he was paying attention before she belted out the words along with Tina.
“You're simply the best!” She pointed her finger directly in his face. “Better than all the rest.” Powerful head pumping. “Better than anyone.” Arms swaying above her head. “Anyone I've ever met.”
She clutched her hands to her heart as she swayed along to the words, miming along for all she was worth. She knew how to give a rousing performance and he deserved it.
“I'm stuck on your heart
I hang on every word you say.”
“No you don't,” Scott argued, but he was beginning to feel a little amused.
“Tear us apart,” Selene mimed then stuck her tongue out at him. “Baby, I would rather be dead.”
Scott's lips twitched, just a tiny bit, but she saw it and knew that she'd got him. He was hers now.
She moved closer until she was directly in front of him and carried on lip syncing along, pantoming the moves.
“In your heart, I see the star of every night and every day.”
She grabbed him by the hand and dragged him to his feet, ignoring his protests.
“In your eyes, I get lost, I get washed away.”
She kept hold of his hand, but stretched out their arms so that she could spin herself in against his chest in what she thought was the slickest move ever. He automatically grabbed on, holding her in case she fell.
“Just as long as I'm here in your arms, I could be in no better place…”
She wound up to the next line, tipped her head back onto his shoulder, eyes closed as she belted out the words like a woman possessed. “You're simply the best.”
She swayed from side to side, forcing him to move with her or lose his balance. “Better than all the rest. Better than anyone, anyone I've ever met.”
She felt the shaking of his shoulders as he started to laugh, but she couldn't hear much over the music. Not that that mattered, she knew her plan was working.
“Ooh, I'm stuck on your heart, I hang on every word you say.”
She wound her way out of his arms again in true ballroom dancing fashion but kept hold of his hand.
"Don't tear us apart,no, no, no. Baby, I would rather be dead!”
Scott span her again and she latched her arms around his neck, moving together now. This time he joined in, actually singing, which she now joined in with, uncaring as to how bad she sounded.
“Each time you leave me, I start losing control,
You're walking away with my heart and my soul.
I can feel you even when I'm alone, oh baby, don't let go!”
They danced a haphazard path around the coffee table and up the steps to a clear spot of floor just in time for the next part. They bounced around, Scott mimed playing a saxophone as Selene did her best Tina Turner gyrations -if the woman herself could move like that in her 70s Selene had no excuse to let the said down.
“Ooh, you're the best, ooh.”
Arms were waved as they sang. Selene had managed to grab Kayo's discarded hairbrush off a side table and was using it in her best teenage girl sleepover fashion.
“Better than all the rest. Better than anyone, anyone I've ever met.”
Scott took her outstretched hand and wound his fingers through hers, allowing her to swing his arm around as they sang the next lines.
“Ooh, I'm stuck on your heart, I hang on every word you say. Don't tear us apart, no, no, Baby, I would rather be dead!”
She let go of his hand and threw her head back to scream the next line.
“You're the best!”
They broke apart to dance on their own as the music pumped winding up for the finale. Scott was fully in the grove now, his face losing the haggard sadness she'd seen when she'd first entered the room. They were karaoke masters, they knew how to match actions to the words and they did it with style.
"Ooh, you're simply the best. Better than all the rest. Better than anyone, Anyone I've ever met!”
They bounced on the spot, singing at the top of their lungs, heads thrown back as they let the music and the fun of the moment wash away the disappointment and sadness of the day.
“I'm stuck on your heart, baby. I hang on every word you say.” Heads bobbed, fingers clicked, booties shimmied, hips gyrated as they let themselves go. “Don't tear us apart, no, no, no. Baby, I would rather be dead!”
Selene was very out of breath now, and why shouldn't she be, she been carrying this performance after all, but he was worth it. They bounced back together again, and she grabbed his hand, squeezing it tight to make sure he was fully understanding the reason behind her song choice.
“Oh, you're the best. You're better than all the rest
Better than anyone, anyone I've ever met.”
She locked eyes with him as the song wound down and spoke the last words directly to her very best friend in the entire world, and thankfully he was right there with her. “Ooh, you're the best.”
She was there to catch him in a huge hug as the music died away, leaving them panting for breath. The man could run the length of the island but make him dance and he'd be puffing like an old steam train in minutes.
“Beer?” she offered, kissing the top of his head where he'd faceplanted her shoulder.
It took him a moment, but finally he mumbled, “Yeah, that’d be good. Thanks.” That last word meant everything to her and told her that he appreciated her efforts more than he would probably admit.
She nodded and gave him another squeezy hug before she let him go, confident that she'd made her point. He was the best, the best brother, the best friend and the best rescuer out there. And whenever he doubted himself she'd be there to kick his arse until he realised the error of his ways.
-x-
John smiled to himself as he watched the live lounge feed. His wife was certainly unconventional in her approach but she got the job done.
And, until he could get home he knew his brother was in the best hands now. She'd make sure that he remembered that he was the best.

Hi, I did this sketches of Eagle and Uncanny Valley from Miraculous New York. And I think that I have an idea of who and how would have the miraculous. First of all: Aeon Hill aka Uncanny Valley wishes could have the thunderbird miraculous.
You would think why? She’s a machine. She couldn’t see the Kwai or hear them.
I’ll tell you why: even though she’s an androide, she is capable to think and learn as a human, the only thing is she thinks that is all machine created by Majestia, but what if I’ll tell you that she couldn’t be made by her own mother, I mean she made clear that she’s not human, so she could have another origins like outer space, maybe she could be sort of alien or even she could be more person that’s machine. But that’s the thing: she has to believe that she is her own person with her own ideas, and once she recognizes herself not a human, a living being. Then she would be able to see the kwamis. And she would use the thunderbird that represents the “will” or “libre albedrío”.
Besides in the episode of Startrain, Markov didn’t say anything about not being able to see Kaalki, and even he seemed he was able to see the Kwami, so I don’t matter if you aren’t a machine what if matters if you are capable of feel. And Markov had showed that a couple times, even he was able to make a wish with the miraculouses of ladybug and cat noir.
Besides, searching about the name of Aeon, which means “unlimited power that long last ever” and Uncanny valley that’s means “not at all human because of the theory of th Uncanny Valley in robotics”
And searching about the thunderbird, is a mythical creature of great power, beyond the earth and it was the messenger of the gods, and that made me remind about the special of New York that she acted such as messenger between ladybug and cat noir.
I’m still thinking on the design.
I hope you like it. :)

Lead Paint & Salt Air | Spencer Reid
Smurph's Masterlist | Series Masterlist
Part 1 of Routine Maintenance
Warnings: mentions of Diana's death (not explicit), mini-PTSD flashback for Spencer, Spencer's horny and lonely, also cranky.
Summary: After two years on the road, Spencer breaks down in Thunderbird, California. In only a few hours he meets some of the most eclectic townspeople of his life when all he wants is some peace and quiet.
(Note: Because of the nature of this fic, being inspired by one of my favorite bands, the chapters will be a bit longer than usual to fit with the vibe of the song they're named after <3)
Tumblr media
After he was released from Milburn, Spencer’s mother passed in her sleep. It was blessedly quick and painless for her, and though it tore him apart he was grateful at least for that. Finally, Spencer had nothing pressing tying him to D.C., and he followed Gideon’s lead so many years later. Buying a Jeep and taking to the road, Spencer lived out of a suitcase as he’d done for years.
Instead of searching for serial killers, he began a long search for himself.
For two years now, he’d asked miles of pavement and yellow dashed paint who he was. He questioned the night sky and the morning sun over countless towns and cities. He’d even asked the mountaintops and hillsides, and yet he had found no answer.
Tumblr media
Spencer started drinking again. It seemed the thing to do in shitty motel rooms and dive bars, putting on a few pounds with each greasy dish that accompanied his bourbon. The bags under his eyes were no longer from a lack of sleep - though he still didn’t get much because of the nightmares - but instead they stained his skin from the exhaustion of that ever-present question in his mind.
Is this who I am now?
Am I broken? Am I beyond salvation? Am I as worthless and lonely as I feel every single fucking day?
It all started when he tried to strangle a pregnant Cat Adams in an interrogation room. He slid down the cold concrete wall in a prison too much like the one he’d been released from when it first erupted through his brain like a bullet. One question led to another… and another and another, but they always started with that one.
Is this who I am now?
At this point, he was sure he’d never find the answer. Instead, he’d contented himself with wandering, exploring all that America currently had to offer. One day he’d move internationally, maybe go back to Paris where he’d spent time with his mother.
He’d happened upon Thunderbird, California early that morning. Worried he was lost forever in the Cali wilderness, Spencer followed the rising sun through winding forest roads as it streamed through the trees. After a few hours cautiously eyeing the offshutes of paths and trails, he finally burst into civilization.
It was a tiny beach town. A handful of buildings littered the main street, string lights connecting them along with the wind-blown piles of sand scattering along the road. Houses haphazardly were plopped along the varying hills that hid it from the outside world, but it was beautiful.
The shops on the main strip were brightly painted, handmade signs reading Billy’s Bait and Go!, Sue Says Sew, and Gil’s Grocery proudly proclaiming strangely named stores that gave little question for what they did to service the town. Spencer had yet to spot a normal chair on the porches outside- they were all either beach chairs or porch swings swaying in the light breeze.
Sunday was the Fourth of July, and the town was in full patriotic mode. Red, white, and blue windmills and flags sprung up from nearly every lawn. A fireworks stand was smack dab in the middle of a roundabout in the center of town, with a few people hurrying across the curved road to it. A man in an oversized Uncle Sam hat handed out sparklers to the kids, smiling wider than the sun.
Spencer spent the morning in the town diner, Bean There, looking out the large window as the small town came to life. It was apparently known for its local coffee. Spencer had to admit it was good, on the top ten list he’d tried in his travels. Though the best coffee had been found in a China Town shop in lower Indiana, which he was loath to admit.
He sat in a booth in the corner, people watching as the crowds picked up and petered out. All sorts of people filtered through the door as they used the diner as a waystation before heading out to the rest of their days. In a town of less than five hundred, any outsider was noticed immediately, and Spencer was no different. Nearly every person who came in eyeballed his Jeep on the way through the door and squinted at Spencer before ordering. He didn’t mind, he was used to being the outsider, had been his whole life.
He picked at a plate of waffles and bacon, holding a book loosely in one hand as he enjoyed the morning sunlight through the window. His waitress, Michelle, had given him a side-eye after his first hour, unsure what to make of him. He simply tipped her early, going with a twenty-five percent tip of what he’d already ordered. She was much more amenable after that, mostly leaving him alone but checking in periodically with a smile and a refill.
His hair was still long. He had refused to cut it, even after JJ's insistence over video chats. He liked it, especially liked these new trends of men finally getting to put their hair in a bun. He liked the look, and had been enamored with the Nordic styles he read of in his youth, braiding and intricate knots decorated with silver and beads. He missed those days in Earth’s history.
He wore a pair of jeans and a purple flannel shirt with his boots. Though he often preferred suits, this style had appealed to him greatly in his early days on the road. He’d been called a “hipster” more times than he cared to admit, but he felt strong in his fashion choices. He knew he looked good, and Spencer had long since gotten used to the beard. Shaving on the road was hard and without the dress code constrictions of the BAU, he was happy to grow it out.
“Hey, Honey!” Michelle chuckled from behind the counter as the front door swung open. It chimed in greeting as two people stepped through and into the cool air-conditioned building. Spencer tried not to stare at the woman, but he’d spent a good long time on the road and it had been a while… and she was gorgeous.
Her hair poofed around her shoulders, eyes alight with an animated excitement. Copper toned muscles peeked out of a tank top and tight jeans, a red flannel tied around her hips as she sauntered into the diner. She had her arm looped around an older man’s waist, who hugged her tightly back before letting go as they approached the counter.
He had a clearly visible Ranger tattoo on his bicep, both of which were bigger than Spencer’s head. With his slicked back salt and pepper curls and giant frame, Spencer knew he wanted nothing to do with being on that man’s bad side.
“Mornin’, Chelle,” she smiled, easing into the stool across from the waitress. The man stood behind her with his hands on her shoulders, looking curiously around the diner as many patrons had that morning. His gaze landed on Spencer, who quickly glanced out the window to avoid his hard stare. "How's it going?"
“Oh, you know how it goes- a flirt here, a proposal there,” Michelle jokingly lamented as she pulled two mugs out from under the bar. She snagged the carafe from the coffee maker and filled them before sliding them across the counter.
“Oof,” the man chuckled heartily, finally tearing his dark eyes from Spencer and to her. “Sounds exhausting.”
“You joke all you want, Rose Delgado,” Michelle scolded, her playful smirk turning to a hard glare. She pointed at him, “I am a catch and everyone here knows it.”
Rose held up his hands in defeat, “My bad, Chelle. You’re absolutely right. If I were a few years younger I’d try for your hand too.”
“Who says you can’t?” she quipped with a wink, and Rose went bright red.
He dragged an awkward hand across the back of his neck and laughed, "Huh, well, I think Mattie May might have a problem with that."
The women laughed along with him, and Michelle tapped the counter lightly with her fingers, "I'll put your usual in. Extra powdered sugar, right, Honey?"
The girl referred to now forever in Spencer's brain as Honey nodded, licking her lips. "It's gonna be a long day, Chelle. Give me as much coke as you got."
Rose smacked the top of her head in jest, and Honey looked up to stick her tongue out at him. She glanced over at Spencer as he slid out of the booth, and even as he made his way over to the counter to pay she never averted her gaze. A gold ring was tied to a string necklace around her neck, and it was all Spencer had not to follow it to where the pendant rested between her boobs.
"You drive that Jeep outside?" Rose grumbled as he approached. Michelle came back up to the counter as Spencer tugged his wallet out of his pocket.
He handed her more than enough for his meal and another tip, then nodded, "Yeah, that's mine."
"Your axle is about to crack. You should get it looked at."
"I'll do that," Spencer replied politely. He was used to strangers telling him things he didn't really need to do by now. They often took one look at him and deemed him an academic, which wasn't wrong, but to them it usually meant he couldn't take care of things himself.
"Here's your change, baby," Michelle interrupted, reaching across the counter with a ten in one hand and a to-go cup of joe in the other. Rose stared at him, as did Honey, but Spencer just shook his head at the waitress.
"Keep it. Thanks for letting me keep your booth for a few hours."
He swept up the cup, gave her a nod and turned on his heel out the door. She laughed to herself and shouted after him, "Come back soon!
"Boy tips real good," he heard her just before the door closed behind him. "He can live in that booth if he wants."
Spencer smiled to himself as he hopped in the jeep. This was a nice town, but he'd been through a lot of nice towns. He had to keep moving, searching, coming up with a reason for leaving his friends behind to worry about him.
He decided to see the beach before going back through the trees. He wanted to see Oregon, but his phone didn't work so well in these isolated parts of the state so he'd have to buy a map somewhere. He made note of the lone gas station in town, then followed the signs to the sand.
It was early, but there were people in the water. Spencer wasn't much for swimming, so he parked his jeep in the small lot and pulled a blanket out of the back. He found a secluded spot on a hill, unfurled the blanket and sat down. He took off his flannel and shoes, leaning back to enjoy the view.
The sounds of shrieking laughter and the waves lulled him into complacency as he sipped his coffee. The sun was hot, but not too bad for this early in the morning. Unlike DC, this area wasn't humid, and the soft winds off the water cooled his skin.
Is this who I am now? Popped into his mind, always at the worst times. Once upon a time, he was a strong and capable man, an elite FBI agent always willing to go the extra mile. Now, even sitting here exhausted him. Speaking to the townsfolk at the counter exhausted him, and all he wanted to do was have a drink and go to sleep.
Is this who I am now? He wondered. Am I the guy who has nowhere to go and nowhere to be except the road, running far away from my past and the pain that follows?
He supposed so. Being out here hurt less than sitting in his empty apartment, looking into the void of his missing heart and wondering just when exactly his life passed him by. He always thought he’d have a family, kids and a wife by now. He thought he’d have a house and people to depend on him, that he’d love and they’d never wonder if it was out of obligation or a bond from trauma like it had been with the BAU.
Sure, they called him every week or so, just to see if he was okay. Their voices were always laced with concern, but a dripping tiredness of having to worry about the kid. Spencer hadn’t been a kid in a long time, and with each new trauma their babying of him became just another weight added to his shoulders. Another reason to prove himself.
It never worked.
Deciding it was time to go, time to run away again, Spencer dragged himself away from the beach and its false allure of peacefulness. He rolled up the blanket and put it back in its usual spot in the back of the jeep, put his coffee in the cupholder and he was off again.
Coming up the bend from the beach, he spotted a pothole one second too late. The back wheel slammed into it with a loud crunch, and before he knew it the back of the jeep collapsed into the sand-dusted street.
“Oh, goddamnit,” he grunted, punching the passenger seat in irritation.
Spencer pulled his phone out of his pocket, and sure enough he had zero reception. He groaned and let his head fall back on the headrest, his eyes shutting. Sucking in a deep breath, Spencer counted to five before letting it go.
“Yer axle’s cracked!” a voice came from the side, and when Spencer opened his eyes he spotted a beat up truck next to him on the road. It had cans dangling from the sides on old fishing line and other random trash piled up in the back, a boat hitched to the back of it.
An old grizzled man leaned heavily out the window, pointing at the back of the jeep and nodding, “Yep, y’ain’t goin’ nowhere, son.”
“Yeah,” Spencer snapped, furrowing his brows at him. “I noticed.”
“Ain’t no need to take a tone with me, boy,” the man grumbled. He pointed a gnarled finger at Spencer that shook in the air. “I’mma help you.”
Spencer didn’t have a lot of faith that his twisted tree limb of a man was going to be much help to him, so he waved his cell phone at him. “I’m sorry. Can I borrow your phone so I can call a tow truck?”
The man frowned with an exaggerated bottom lip and shook his head animatedly, “I ain’t got one of them things! Ya think I want brain cancer or somethin’?”
“Uhm… no?” Spencer began, but he cut him off with a beckoning hand.
“No. I don’t,” the man nodded firmly. “C’mon, I’ll take ya up to Rose’s place.”
Spencer groaned internally at the name he’d heard this morning. It was the same squinting old man who told him the axle was about to crack in the first place. Then he brightened up at the thought of getting to see Honey and her tight tank top again.
“I ain’t got all day, son. I’m busy, y’see,” the man called, breaking through his thoughts. Spencer nodded to himself and turned off the jeep before getting out and snagging his suitcase from the back seat.
He rounded the truck only to open the creaky door and find almost an entire carton of cigarette packs littering the floorboards, along with a variety of loose tools and nails. Spencer climbed into the cab and closed the door behind him, setting the suitcase on his lap. It was a travel size, just big enough for a week’s worth of clothes and shoes. He kept his toiletries in another bag in the back of his car.
“Thanks for the ride,” he said softly. “Sorry for snapping. It’s been a bit of a day for me.”
The man chuckled, a little choked huffing sound from deep in his throat. “It’s been a bit of a day for everyone, son. It’s only nine in the mornin’!”
Deciding it was better to scoff in his mind and not at this weird stranger driving him through town, Spencer nodded. The brightly colored shops passed them by as the man drove at a snail’s pace, stopping for the allotted three seconds at each stop sign and never using his blinker.
“Name’s Nell, by the by,” the old man declared suddenly, jerking Spencer out of his reverie of the town. “Not that you asked. What’s yer story, son?”
“Uh, I’m Spencer,” he said slowly. Awkwardly. “I’m just traveling.”
“That’s a sheht story. No pizzazz, no flare. Ain’t you got stories where yer from?”
How do you like dead mutilated bodies? He wondered. Spencer laughed quietly and made sure to stare straight ahead. Nell’s eyes flicked quickly to his each time he looked over, and the truck veered with them.
“I’m not much of a storyteller, Nell.”
“Shame,” Nell muttered, his top lip twitching as he seemed to think very hard about that. “Puppy dog eyes like that, you could get a peach and a half to follow you home if you could string a good yarn.”
Spencer struggled to follow that metaphor, so he just gave a noncommittal hum. The thought of a man who looked like Nell referring to a woman as a ‘peach’ left a bad taste in his mouth.
"You ever been this way up before?"
"Nope. Just passing through on my way to Oregon."
"Ah, sheht," Nell grumbled. He slapped the steering wheel and pointed at nothing. "Oregon ain't got nothin' on Thundabird! I came here after 'Nam and never looked back!"
Spencer thanked God that Rossi didn't talk like this, not that fighting in Vietnam caused mushmouth, but he was getting irritated.
"Lotsa people round here just showed up. Never left. It's a town of strays, y’know? Might find somethin' purty and never wanna leave like I did."
"Oh yeah?" Spencer asked, not really paying much attention. He gazed longingly out the window and decided he could have walked faster than Nell drove.
"Met my Bernie and never could leave. She’s purtier than a seagull at sunset, I swear it.”
“You have any kids?”
“Nah, she’s small. Not much more’n me can fit in there most of the time.”
Spencer made a face and turned to him, disgusted, “What?”
Nell leaned forward and rubbed a hand across the dash of his nasty truck, “She’s small, but she’s a beaut! All I ever needed.”
Thankfully, they finally made their way up to the diner. Delgado’s lay catty corner to it, right next to a small inn called The Thunderbird Inn. Spencer got the hell out of Bernie as fast as he could and waved a hand to Nell. “Thanks for the ride, Nell. It’s been a trip.”
“Anytime, son!” Nell chuckled manically, and it was all Spencer had not to grimace. He pulled out of the small driveway slower than molasses, almost hit a stop sign, then rumbled down the street.
Spencer took a steadying breath and shook his head before going into the mechanic's shop. A small reception area stood in the front, the smell of grease and exhaust puffing in from the door leading through the garage. There was a window in front of a desk where a small woman sat in a headscarf. She wore a brightly colored floral shirt, her braids piled high above her head as she gave him a small wave.
"How ya doing, baby?" she asked with an easy grin. The tension in Spencer's shoulders from talking to Nell eased in just one look at that smile. There was also something about an older black lady calling him ‘baby’ in a soft voice that made him feel better for some reason.
"Uhm, my car broke down," Spencer said, pointing behind him.
She nodded, "I'm Mattie May. Rose told me you might be making your way here."
"Oh, he did, did he?" Spencer snarked, rolling his eyes.
"Don't take it personal," Mattie May hushed. She stood and rounded the corner, then waved for him to follow. "Man's got a sixth sense about cars. In fact, I first met him when I broke down on the side of the road outside of town."
Spencer followed Mattie May behind the counter and into a small kitchen area. He eyeballed the fridge as she puttered around. Pictures of Rose, Mattie May, and Honey littered the front. Some had group photos with a few of the eclectic townsfolk he'd run into already, others with people he didn't know.
"He asked me to dinner before fixing my car. I fell head over heels and never looked back. Moved here a few months later." She pulled out a fresh pot of coffee and poured him some in a brightly colored mug with flowers on it, then one for herself. "You take sugar, baby?"
"Lots of it," he muttered, leaning down to look at more of the photographs. "This town's like the Bermuda triangle, huh?"
"For lost souls… yeah, I guess it is," she said softly. Her skin glimmered under the fluorescent lighting, dark and beautiful against the bright purples and pinks of her shirt and beaming smile. "You lost?"
Spencer stood up sharply, suddenly rocked with defensiveness. He shoved his hands in his pockets and shrugged. "How long do you think the repairs will take?"
Mattie May clicked her teeth and sighed, then handed him the mug. "Rose will have to tell you that. If he doesn't have the parts you can stay at the inn. I'll have Honey make you up a room."
Spencer took a sip. It was fantastic, obviously from the same beans the diner used. "Is she your daughter? I saw her with Rose at the diner."
"We've definitely taken to her like she is. Another stray that showed up a while back and never wanted to leave."
"Do people who come here ever leave?" he snarked, flashing her a look.
"People land where they need to. Sometimes that's here."
"I'd like to get the hell out of here as fast as possible. No offense."
Mattie May smirked at him and leaned against the counter, "None taken."
"Axle cracked, huh?" a familiar deep voice came from behind them. Spencer looked to find Rose leaning over the front counter and watching him expectantly.
"Right in half."
"Hmmm," he grunted, nodding to himself. "I'll send out Rico."
"The man's got somewhere to be, Rose," Mattie May said, waving her cup at her husband. "How long will it take to repair?"
Rose pushed himself off the counter with a sigh. He ran a hand over his face as he ambled slowly into the small kitchen, then shrugged. "I don't have that model in stock as nobody in town drives it. Could take a month for the parts to come in."
"A month?" Spencer asked sharply. He set the cup down harder on the counter than he meant to, and it hit with a clatter. "I can't sit around here for a month."
“Or more.” Rose shrugged, "UPS only comes through here once a month by boat. It's too hard to get through the mountains."
"Where you off to in such a hurry?" Mattie May asked softly. She set a comforting hand on his shoulder and gave him a soft squeeze. "If you gotta be somewhere soon, I'm sure we can find you a ride."
Spencer rubbed the back of his neck roughly in irritation. "Nowhere. I just don't like sitting in one place too long."
"You some sorta drifter?" Rose asked, eyeing him with a hard glare. Spencer was sure he looked the part with his old flannel, messy hair, beard and battered boots, but he didn’t like the thought after his previous line of work.
Spencer glared right back, his jaw set tightly. Mattie May blew out a breath and gave him another squeeze before letting her hand fall from his shoulder. “It might do you good to sit still for a while, then. C’mon, baby, I’ll take you over to Honey and we’ll get you a room.”
Mattie May steered him around Rose and out the front door. A loud boom! Made him jerk away from her and flinch from the sound. A few errant pop pop pops followed, and when he heard her soft laughter he looked up to see kids lighting fireworks in the street.
His vision dragged, his blood pounded in his ears as he tried to convince himself he was fine. He wasn’t being blown up, and he wasn’t at Everett Lynch’s home. Mattie May’s voice ripped him sharply to the present as she called to them.
“Y’all go somewhere else and do that! People are tryin’ to work!”
Their shoulders deflated and they nodded, “Yes, Mrs. Delgado!”
She shook her head and chuckled, turning back to Spencer. He stared at the charred spot on the pavement where the firecrackers had erupted, chest heaving as the acrid scent of burnt embers flooded his nose.
“You okay, baby?”
Spencer found himself turning toward her kind voice, his eyes wet and suddenly more tired than he’d been in months. “Yeah. I’m… I’m not a big fan of the fourth of July.”
“The firecrackers?” she asked. He nodded. “Did you serve?”
“Uh, no ma’am.” He didn’t want to tell her anything about the FBI. Since leaving, Spencer hadn’t told anyone that he used to be an agent. What he’d become was too shameful.
“Holly Henson isn’t much for it either since he came back from Iraq, neither is Rose. I bought them some noise canceling headphones for this time of year. I have an extra pair.”
“I'll keep that in mind. Thanks."
She led him into the front of The Thunderbird Inn, where Honey sat behind the reception desk with a young man Spencer hadn't met yet. He was tall and about her age, near thirty, leaning over the counter and smirking at her. His easy going grin and good looks reminded him of Luke, as did his dark closely cropped hair.
"I'm serious, Honey. It'll be fun."
Honey lounged in a roller chair and crossed her hands behind her head, "I'm not going to the bar on the fourth. I'll end up having Lionel and Ritchie pawing all over me and looking down my shirt."
The man peeked a little further over and grinned, "I'd tell you to wear a different shirt, but I can't exactly blame them for trying to sneak a peek."
Honey sat up sharply and slapped at him, and he jumped back with a mad laugh. She looked over his shoulder and her eyes brightened as she saw Spencer. "Axle cracked, huh, big tipper?"
Spencer squinted at her and nodded. Mattie May laughed and put a hand on his shoulder, "He needs a room for the night, Honey. Rico, Rose is lookin' for you. You gotta go tow this young man's car."
She turned to him, "I never caught your name."
"Spencer. Spencer Reid."
Rico eyed him the way Rose and every other person in this town seemed to, "Your axle cracked?"
Spencer sighed in pure exasperation. “Yes.”
Rico glanced back at Honey, who shrugged and made a face. He made his way toward the door, watching Spencer. His shoulder bumped Spencer's as he passed and then he was gone, Mattie May following closely behind.
"I got Room 4 open, Mr. Reid," Honey said playfully as Spencer glared out the door where Rico went. He looked up to see her dangling an ancient key attached to a little green tag with the inn name on it. "Follow me."
Spencer followed her and her tight jeans down a hallway to the left. The inn was a big square, two levels, with only a handful of rooms on the first floor. Honey took him to the center where the rooms met in the middle of the curved hallway. A door across from his had a sign on it that read Management on the front in faded gilded lettering and a doorbell on the side.
"Dinner’s at six. I'll bring you a plate," she said absentmindedly as she fiddled with the door. She clasped the handle and tugged up as she turned the lock. "Door sticks, and there's a patio out back where we usually have a bonfire this time of year. If it's too loud, let me know."
The door opened with a crack, and she pushed it open for him to step inside. The room was small and airy, wide broad windows that had a view of the far off ocean and palm trees. Spencer spotted boats and people in the water as he stepped up to them to look out. The tulle cottony curtains swayed with the breeze through the cracked door, and without much thought Spencer shut and locked it.
The bedspread was a bright sky blue with matching pillows. The walls were painted off-white, with pictures of the beach and the town plastered all over, much like Mattie May’s fridge and the reception areas of both businesses. Spencer dug into his pocket as he looked around with hardly disguised disdain and pulled out his wallet. He handed his credit card to Honey, but she just stared at him.
“Don’t you need this?”
“First night’s on Lionel. He was supposed to fix that pothole weeks ago.”
Spencer squinted at her, “How do you know I hit a pothole?”
She smiled, wide and bright. “Saw you drive toward the beach. Townspeople know to avoid it.”
“Good to know,” he grumbled, stuffing his card back into his wallet. “Is there a phone I can use?”
“Mmm, most people here don’t have cell phones. Providers don’t get great service around here, but there’s a landline on the nightstand.”
Spencer nodded, looking to where she pointed. “Internet?”
Honey laughed, but when she saw him watching her sternly she stopped. “Oh, you’re serious. There’s Collie’s Cafe down the street. It’s dial-up but it’ll get you what you need for a dime every ten minutes.”
“God this place really is the Bermuda Triangle,” he groaned, rubbing his face roughly with his hands. “Does everyone have a weird name here?”
Honey put her hands on her hips and made a face, “Who’s got a weird name?”
Spencer just glared.
Honey broke out into a creeping slow smile and nodded to herself. “You’re not a lot of fun, are you, Mr. Reid?”
“You can call me Spencer.”
“Hmm,” she hummed. She tapped her jaw and watched him, “This is a nickname kinda town. You stay here long enough and you’ll get one too.”
“I hope to God that doesn’t happen,” he said irritably. “If Honey’s not your real name, do you mind if I ask what it is?” “Y/N,” she replied with a grin. “Call me that and we’ll have a problem.”
“I don’t want any problems, Honey,” Spencer snarked back. “I just want to leave Margaritaville and go to Oregon.”
Honey bit her lip and smiled before turning on her heel and walking toward the door. She lingered for a moment with her hand on the knob, obviously chewing on something in her mind. Sucking in a breath, she glanced his way once more and said in a soft voice, “Maybe your problem is that you can’t enjoy where you’re at, Spencer. Maybe you should take a breather.”
Before he could angrily reply, she closed the door behind her. It didn’t fit in the frame well, and he heard her little grunt as she pulled up on the knob to latch it shut. Shaking his head and letting out a pained breath, Spencer hoisted his suitcase up and tossed it on the bed, grateful to be alone again. He plopped down next to it, elbows on his knees as he looked around, and that question popped into his head again.
Is this who I am now?
