GENSHIN MEN courting you.
Tumblr media
WARNING: This is a Filipino AU set in the Spanish Colonization period, so basically all of these are inspired by Filipino courting rituals.
Contains Diluc, Kaeya, Neuvilette, and Wriothesley (some of these men are hand picked because of the languages on the banner on top tehee.), fem!reader, age gap.
Tumblr media
Diluc Ragnvindr (Manileño)
Being the son of a businessman, he was the highest regarded bachelor in all of Manila being that he was also rather good looking.
This man is not a big fan of romanticism and would often avoid it like the plague but his guilty pleasure was to read books in the romantic genre hidden away in the depths of his library, his trips to the book store was more often than usual and many thought that he's gone book crazy but that was not the case however.
You.
You were the reason that he's now the book shop's loyal patron, you were just a simple woman from another business oriented family. You were the typical Maria Clara to the spectators eyes, quiet and modest though that was not Diluc saw.
You were ambitious and rather messy at times but that's what he loved about you, your comfortability with someone like him made him feel that he actually was able to make friends of his own that his father had not told him to befriend for the sake of business.
That's when he started to grow feelings for you.
He was still stoic and expressionless at times but whenever he sees you, his ears visibly go red under his luscious red locks.
With the encouragement of his mother and the head maid of his estate, he mustered up the bravery in his entire blood line to go to your home with the intent of asking for your father's blessing to court you.
He was shocked to see that there were other men who were after you; from a Mestizo to a Sangley, they were all there waiting for your sweet yes.
But he had an advantage that didn't have; they didn't know you the way he did.
It started from flowers to love letters, he did everything that he learnt from the romance books he had read and basically copied every single gentleman in the books that women loved.
His very next move was to bring you by the lake that he had remembered that you used to go to as a little girl, it was a bit muddy though, ruining yours and his shoes but it didn't matter as he saw that you were obviously over the moon to see a childhood place again still intact.
He saw something that your other suitors weren't able to see nor willing to, they painted you as this innocent flower that needed corruption from them but to him— you were the most adventurous and the bravest girl he's ever seen.
"Yes." You laughed.
He raised a brow, "Yes what, binibini?" he asked.
"I want to be yours..."
Those very words made his heart race as if he just ran from his house to the nearest farm in the concrete city of Manila, he couldn't believe that his awkward attempts to act out the romanticism of men in books that women seem to love had worked.
"You're pulling on my leg..." He breathed out only to be wronged by her shaking her head.
And just like that, he ran to you and lifted you into the air. The adrenaline causing the two of you to fall into the mud, it was sticky and wet but it didn't matter to him even if his ivory white blouse that his maids spent hours on to perfect was ruined because his heart was now owned by the most perfect woman he could ever think of.
"So... what should we call each other?" He asked.
Kaeya Alberich (Español)
Ever since he has set foot in the Philippines with his father who governed the Philippines in the reign of the Spaniards he has never felt the sense of nervousness, back in Madrid, he had an image to uphold as a government official's son but now he can just let loose.
His move to the Philippines was the very start of his rebellion, he now probably felt like a normal boy like he dreamt of back in Spain but his father wasn't having it.
So to set him straight, he put Kaeya in the supervision of a prayle.
The first mass where he served as the priest's assistant he managed to oversee the entire service from the elevated stage where statues of saints and Jesus were all shown in the altar made of wood and gold. One of them was you, a really pretty Filipina who was praying religiously and singing alongside the child choir.
After the mass, he was about to gather his friend of rebellious teens until he was stopped and called upon the priest he's under.
He mustered up his most innocent boy smile until he saw you approaching, turns out that you were the goddaughter of the priest and he wanted Kaeya and her to be friends since she was the best candidate of friends that could place a good influence on him.
He was beyond bored, accompanying you and other nuns and worshippers as you all prayed to the virgin Mary. There he realized that convincing you to join him to the dark side was a hard task to do, you weren't that innocent but you were the most pure and truest girl he's ever met.
Sometimes you were sassy and very witty but he felt as if you really cared for him despite just being friends with Kaeya so that his father won't worry about him while he's away, with you he learned a lot of things, mainly that he didn't need to rebel to be free.
Most of the things he did was disobeying his father but it didn't do him any good at all, with his friends he learned to become a womanizer and to drink at a very young age. But it was weird to admit that you managed to fix him.
From table manners to memorising the entire prayers in the book in Latin, he learned it all from you. You were the only friend that his father approved of however, despite being a girl and potentially seeing his son in a romantic way not that he minded having you as a daughter in law.
Kaeya soon blossomed feelings for you, it started from helping around the church like you did and almost took your job from you.
He was still cheeky as ever, his teenager instincts causing him to want to create discord but you manage to dim it down with a simple glance.
Everyone loved your pairing, almost every single one encouraged you and Kaeya to start dating already and with the blessing of his father and your father, he began to do the cheesiest things.
You were confused if whether he was doing this to sway you or just flat out piss you off.
One night, you were sleeping peacefully until you heard something from the open window of your room. Groggily heading your way there you saw Kaeya and his goons of friends who some you recognized to be the sons of the farmers in your father's hacienda.
"This is for you, cariño..." Kaeya and his poor ability to sway women with his voice began to sing you a popular Spanish love song, he was hurting your ears but it amused you.
You stayed by the window sill and watched as he sang while his friends played a guitar or a drum made out of a bucket, they were all in tune with the original song but Kaeya seemed to have his own version.
"Oh my dearest... will you give this lonesome and poor little Spanish boy your sweetest yes?" He said so dramatically, maybe you should've banned him from reading Jane Austen or Shakespeare.
You laughed at his advances before giving him the shockest shock of his life, "Sure... why not?"
He looked like was about to faint when he heard those words come out of you, his friends celebrating behind him like a bunch of buffoons while he was still awestrucked.
"R-Really...?" He had to make sure.
"Yes, now come in and meet my mother before I change my mind." You've never seen this usually spoiled man who had everything handed to him with a snap of his fingers run so fast into your house and to your living room where he met your mother and your father, ready to welcome him as their son in law.
His father would actually faint if he found out about this though. Who would've thought that his son would be able to grab a girl like you?
Neuvilette (Mestizo)
Like Diluc, he was not one to meddle in with romance since he was very busy as a foreign law maker and businessman.
He only found himself in the ports of Manila due to a business pact with a bunch of Sangley's that offered a good proposal, he never thought of soulmates because to him it was just another myth for the hopeless romantics but it was quite ironic as he was in the territory of the romantics of the south eastern islands.
Soulmates were just plain bullshit until he saw you.
A young merchant who was heavily business minded, though it was the 1800s so no one took you that seriously and that's where your brother came in. He was the perfect bridge for Neuvilette to get to know you better, to get to know what fuels that fire that made you glowing like the blazing sun of the tropics.
Neuvilette manages to strike a deal with your brother however when he asks of you, his eyes widened— you were only twenty two while he was already in his late thirties.
A blossoming flower and a mature tree stump was not exactly the most ideal to some but just like nature, it works in different ways.
In one of his tours to the factory of your brother when he saw you show your amazing leadership and logical thinking skills, he admired every single bit of what you've presented to an oldie like him and you were really pretty on top of that.
You would look perfect together, two business driven minds and great skills in making connections— but you were too sweet for him.
You were still too young for his taste so he just waited for you to grow older, not that he expected some sort of miracle from the heavens that was until one day you yourself aroused the idea of secret feelings. You may have had caught up on how he longingly stares at you and how much he admired you so you wanted to know if he wanted an amazing advice for you.
The businessman was blushing hard, it didn't help that he was pale either.
Then he just pulled out a bouquet of flowers towards you, you accepted them of course due to how pretty they were but why did he give it to you?
"Can I... Can I court you, my lady?" Those very words started the long road to your sweet approval to finally call himself yours, he began to stop by the factory more and more to help around to make use of the time he had before he had to go back to France.
And when that dreaded day came, he didn't seem to forget you one bit. Every month your house was bombarded by boxes of love letters and other items that Neuvilette scoured the entirety of his motherland remembering that you liked them.
It took about three years before he finally got the time to go back to the Philippines to see how the joint business he had with your brother was going but mostly it was to see you of course, waiting by the dock was the familiar woman whose address he kept in his head like words engraved in stone.
Too much to his dismay he began to grow white hairs while you were just starting to greet wrinkles to your beautiful face. It made him insecure and made him think twice if he should greet you until you attacked him with a big hug when he was not looking, he took it as an opportunity to raise you up in the air to view that beauty he longed years for before hugging you back even tighter.
To the spectators, it was rather weird to see an unmarried duo be this intimate but it did not matter. Neuvilette didn't suffer two grueling years of courting her without even getting to see her in person just to be ashamed of showing his love for her.
"Sinasagot na kita..." trans: "I'm going to answer your question."
And just like the first time he showed his love for you, he grew pink and became more bashful by the minute.
He tucked your stray hair behind your ear before he leaned down to admire your beautiful eyes that he'd be lucky to see every single morning when he wakes up and night when he goes to sleep, he wanted you to be his and wanted his entire being to be in your hands, that was how much he loved you.
"And I'm not too young anymore..." Your witty comment making both of you chuckle before his laugh died down as he continued to look into your eyes.
"And I won't get tired of loving you everyday of the rest of my mortal life." He was about to continue his very sappy and sweet dialogue when your brother butted in with an all too familiar smile on his face, "So can I have my business partner now?"
Right, as much as you wanted to greet your suitor and now nobyo, your brother also was here to greet his business partner. Maybe you two will talk this out later on when you two have the time but for now, you were here for business.
Wriothesley (Probinsyano)
Being the eldest of his family, Wriothesley was sent to work at the Hacienda of a rich businessman near the city.
He didn't mind the work at all as he himself wanted to do something to help around the house in many ways possible, being family oriented and too busy raising his younger siblings, love wasn't exactly his first priority in mind until he saw you.
Your father was touring him and other new workers around the farm when he saw you passing by and conversing with your friends, so this was what all the craze was about city girls.
Every time you visited the farm while he tended to the horse stable he made sure to use that as a chance to converse with you, as you were in one of the shaded benches and reading he suddenly decided to approach you.
"Hi, ma'am... that's umm... a cool looking book" he started but he was a bit nervous, you seemed to be a smart collegiala while he can't even admit his illiteracy.
You couldn't fault him that he couldn't even read or write, after all, he came from a different life than you so you offered to teach him the basics and have him full access to your library.
He was a rather fast learner and you liked that as an impatient woman, that tutoring however slowly turned to a flirting session. You had to admit that Wriothesley was a sweet guy but he just wasn't your type though he was keen on changing that.
From a bag of apples he gathered from the apple orchard to a wheel of cheese that he and his fellow workers managed to create from the left over cow milk they harvested, he did everything he can and did what he knew to sway a woman just to change your mind.
You loved his attitude and insistent nature, you were starting to like him but you just wanted to play with him and pretended to not be so impressed until you surprised him with a surprise visit to your father.
The man was shaking like crazy when he met his boss in a more relaxed setting, it was just him and your father all alone.
"So you like my daughter?" Your father started.
"I- uh...—" Before he could even answer, your father cut him off.
"And I want you to be my son in law."
Wriothesley had to check twice if he heard his boss right, he had been working under him for about a couple years now and your father saw his hardwork around the farm and trying to woo you to accept his offer of love.
"But... you need to make that cheese you made again last time, it was delicious..." Now, with your father's blessing, he gathered his friends to create the same wheel of cheese for your father to further prove that he was serious with you but he did most of the hardwork as he was motivated by you.
While he was busy molding the cheese into shape, you decided to pay a visit and stopped by his friends who were watching him from afar after helping him gather excess milk from the cows.
"That man's head over heels for you, ma'am" one of them said.
You laughed, "I know... the feelings are mutual."

A/N: I am not swaying my feet while writing this, never. And I'm running out of ideas so I may make more Filipino AUs of characters I like to make fanfics of and will probably make text AUs because I'm getting obsessed with the ones on Tiktok.

I sort of have an idea for an imagine. What about a Filipino!reader where she loves to eat and her favorite is puto(the spiders probably always see her eating). So one time somebody like Miguel asks her what she was eating and she says "puto" with a warm smile and all and then Miguel is just baffled 😨 (you add like the other spiders who understand spanish in the scene).
The thing is puto is literally a cuss word in Spanish-speaking countries. It can either mean a rude word for a coward, a prostitute, or a slur for a gay man. And puto in Filipino is just rice cakes 😋.
And so Miguel and the others thought you were cussing him when in reality you were painfully oblivious and unaware. And miscommunication and culture clash/shock.
Also, pasukan sa eskwelahan na naman 😭😭.
LOL HI POOOOOO, for real, nasa bakasyon mode pa me mgee, also omg that reminds me of the cute ass yt short i saw of a filipino mom teaching her kid about the dessert in front of her colombian dad LMAOOOOO i love it and I HOPE YOU LOVE THIS <333
(reblogs are greatly appreciated, it helps get my content out there! if you guys like what you see, please reblog it too <:D)
you said... what? — miguel o'hara x filipino!reader
you were happily snacking on your favorite childhood classic snack, a steamed plump rice cake that you bought from your home dimension before heading over to HQ. as you were just minding your own business, stuffing your face with the delightful treat, miguel had noticed you being at peace eating. he looked at the box of assorted colored rice cakes, some were white while others were purple, with some having bits of cheese on them.
"whaddya got there?" he asked as he looked at the rice cakes you had with you. you stopped biting into the food and looked up at miguel with a bright smile. "ah, my favorite dessert snack from back home in the philippines." you explained. miguel nodded as he looked at you. "what's it called?" "ah, puto." you answered him with a sweet smile, which starkly contrasted with miguel's contorted wince. "um... come again?" he asked you in a softer voice this time. "ah, i said it's called 'puto'." you repeated, but miguel staggered backwards a little as he was still in disbelief that he heard what he thought he heard. you handed him a piece, asking him to try it. "i love having some puto in my mouth, y'know? it fills me up just right after a long day." you said with a sigh of contentment as you dug into the rice cake again, smiling widely as miguel looked at the snack and back at you, unsure if he's comfortable with saying the snack's name.
he took a bite and could agree with you, the snack certainly was delicious... though the name kind of made miguel a little taken aback. he does respect that you and your people call it as it is, he'll just remind himself it isn't a dirty word, it's the name of this quaint little dessert that you loved dearly in this context. but if he's being honest right now, he doesn't wanna think at the moment, he just wants to savor the goodness of this snack you really love with you, regardless of what it was named.

Soooo….I made some nationality headcannons! At first I was a liiittle bit unsure if to do so cuz then again.. they live in ninjago…. And im pretty sure countries like argentina or Morocco don’t quite exist in the ninjago universe LMAO. Butttttt. Already seen others make headcannons, so hell, why not? I uses they apply to some irl au or what if they lived in our world uk? And what different countries would I see them coming from and etc.
I can imagine that the EM might have travelled all over the world, either to go into hiding, or missions, or escape conflict, etc. Or maybe simply that’s where they came from! So yeah that’s my little explanation that is mostly for myself cuz im a little bit too literal sometimes lol.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When thinking about nationality I always think a lot about where they grew up and what nationality they grew up with and would later on identify with the most. It’s a complicated concept when your parents are from a different nationality and theyre immigrants in a different country- so you grow up in this country, surrounded by this culture and people, but your. Also. Raised by your parents who also have your family living in this completely different country- where you also find home and relate to the people considering how you look, the language you speak with your parents- or the specific culture and environment your parents grew up wiooith, impacting your home life and the way your raised. Perhaps you lived in both places, or travel a lot to your parents homeland. Perhaps you live in one of your parents countries but the other. Not. but you still identify with one of your parents nationality because of the rest of your family from that side and the culture your take in from them. So it’s always very personal! So for Kai and Nya, I imagined that ray was Argentinian and Maya Filipino. And perhaps - because I want to project onto my faves- they were born and grew up in Argentina. But have always also identified a lot with their mothers homeland, since not only does their race impact the way they might feel more different and set apart from kids there, maya loves talking about her childhood in the Philippines and is always talking over the phone with their aunts and cousins, meaning Kai and Nya def were taught some Tagalog, tho theyre not incredibly fluid with it. In their early teens they probably travelled to the Philippines, (took ray and maya some time to settle down and get enough money to travel, as well as find time) and met their whole family, and the place they reside in, habit that would turn quite common as they would continue to travel other times the following years.
For Lloyd, I really wanted to make him Asian -Brazilian. It just felt right. So imagined that my queen (don’t you judge her >:() Misako would be Brazilian, meanwhile Garmadon,Japanese. i imagine that Misako adores traveling, so she met Garmadon on her trip to Japan, and decided to stay there for a WHILE because of the brothers. During her time there, she had Lloyd. Since her family heard of her new baby, she travelled back to Brazil with a two y/o Lloyd to have her family meet the him and catch up overall. but as the serpentine wars rose In japan (ill hc it happened in japan let me know what u think of that) Misako was told to wait in Brazil. Misako didn’t really like that though, and while she dreaded having to leave her son, she was sure shed come back soon after helping out the Brothers in the battle against the serpentine. So Lloyd was left to live with his aunties and grandparents in Brazil. Of course, after Misako found out about the whole Green Ninja thing and all that crap, she pulled the same stunt as in the series and ✨ vanished ✨. But then Garmadon came and fucking took him like divorced parents sometimes do uk? So then he spent some other of his childhood years growing up in, ya guessed it, Japan. This is how Lloyd identifies both with being a Brazilian and Japanese. As for the rest, I just envision that they lived in their respective countries their whole lives till they were recruited!

HEADCANONS !
summary : a filipina!reader dating conrad fisher
Tumblr media
so basically y’all met at the deb ball — him and nicole were still together at that time ( yeah ironic huh )
but yk we filipina girls are charming ( we just like that 🤭 ) so you really caught his attention !
it’s so funny because he didnt ask anybody but nicole if he can have your number PFFT (well nicole thought that he was just being friendly thats why he gave it to him)
ever since that deb ball thingy y’all started talking -- like getttin to know each other more. he became very close to you as he starts to adore your because of your childhood stories when you were in the philippines.
after a while you took him to the Philippines, y’all weren’t dating (yet, him and nicole just recently broke up) back then but you decided to take him there because he was just so inlove with your culture 😩 ( we love a man that also loves our culture!!! )
you took him to the palengke, you took him to ride the tricycle and the jeep AND LET ME TELL YOU HE ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT.
when you took him home, your family really loved him. they thought that he was so so sweet and so caring -- he was so SPOILED.
they even called him “pogi” that’s like his new nickname now and when you told him what it meant he was a blushing mess!
your family also kept on asking you if y’all were together and if he was your “boypren/jowa" he asked you what it meant you never really told him because it was embarassing for you.
as for his family, they really love you and adore you — even the Conklins love you and thought that you were just adorable!
as we all know we filipina/filipino’s love our family so so much — that was one of the reason’s why Conrad fell for you and why his family absolutely adores you.
so bcs he likes you, he does a lot of stuff LIKE HE EVEN TRIED TO LEARN TAGALOG WORDS and even researched how to like court you and all of that stuff HE EVEN TRIED TO COOK YOU YOUR FAV FOOD — he really made the effort YALL.
so he started to make ligaw and he was absolutely good at it — he even had your parents involved in all of his plans because he wanted to make sure that he was doing the right thing — it was honestly the cutest things ever!
eventually you said yes!
now that you guys are together, you started to call him “mahal” (love) he asked you what it meant and now he calls you like that too.
he would ask you to teach him tagalog words and it was so cute how he tries so so hard to say those words that you taught him.
it’s always been ‘mahal kita’ for the both of you because eversince he knew what it meant, he started to like the way it sounds and he thought that it sounded more meaningful so he started to use it instead of ‘i love you’ (i want this please)
he’d always call you “mahal” and “bebe” it was the cutest and you would always call him “bebe” because that was the one that made him blush a lot
OMG HE ONCE CALLED YOU PALANGGA AND YOU ASKED HIM WHERE HE GOT IT FROM he said he was searching tagalog endearments 🫠
“bebe, cook me sinigang please”, “mahal, where’s my kiss”, “bebe labs, bebe time please”
eversince he knew the word “bebe time” there was never a time that he doesn’t use it.
you would always talk to him in tagalog and he ABSOLUTELY adores it!! it was fine with him even though he thinks that you’re cursing him but still he found it cute.
but he hates it when you’re mad because you would take too fast and it would frustrate him and it always sounded so harsh when you would scream at him in tagalog so ever since the first time you did that, he tried hus best to not make you mad LMAO
his favorite filipino food that you make is sinigang and adobo - he would always tell you to make him some whenever you guys are together or just when he craves it
he also started to love jollibee because you would always tell him to buy some for you so he decided to try it out now it’s one of his favorites!
your favorite song together is from the band IV of spades it was “come inside of your heart — ever since you guys started dating he started to listen to a lot of filipino artists like ben&ben, eraserheads, adie and many more !!
omg when you got home from the philippines you decided to buy lato lato for him 😭 it was the worst decision ever because he wasn’t the only one obsessed with it, Jeremiah was obsessed with it too.
he just loves you and your culture, to the point where whenever it’s summer — you guys made sure that on the top of the list for your plans was to visit the philippines and visit as many places as you can <3 it became his second home and you love that for him. 😩❤️
───────────────────────────

is there some heightened sense in childhood that we lose upon adulthood. Just thinking about how when I was a kid, my grandparents would fly home to the philippines from america, and the only thing I'd want were the kellog's rice crispies, genuinely to me when I was 5 or 6, they were the most delicious thing in the whole entire world- now, American groceries are more common in the philippines, with American brands as a novelty, and I bought a whole box of Kellog's rice crispies..!! and they didn't taste like how I remembered it! it was too sweet, not as crispy and the white chocolate was too sugary. I was like, why did they change the recipe?? But then it was the same for so many things...!! Like other candies and snacks and chocolates. Now they just taste kind of the same??

A fear of spiders, or arachnophobia, seems quite common around the world. Last year, a team of researchers published a global database showing the pervasiveness of arachnophobic sentiments in media based on their investigation of a decade of online newspaper coverage from over 80 countries. These fears remain even though less than 0.5 percent of spider species can actually harm humans through their venom, and most of these species live far from humans anyway.
But there are some exceptions—and my home country, the Philippines, is one of them.
One of the authors of the study, entomologist Aimee Lynn Barrion-Dupo, is also from the Philippines. In an interview, she explained that unlike most countries where spiders were depicted as sources of venom and harm, in the Philippines spiders figured in news reportage mostly as pets or as participants in the popular pastime of laro ng gagamba (literally “game of spiders”). The game involves catching spiders, taking care of them, and making them fight other spiders.
I know the game very well. When I was a child growing up in Laguna province in the Philippines, I played it with other kids in my neighborhood.
My father taught at the University of the Philippines Los Baños College of Forestry, which was located on Mount Makiling, some 60 kilometers away from Manila. Those of us who grew up on the slopes of the mountain would go into the forests to look for the fiercest, strongest, and most unique spiders. We would then house them in medicine bottles or matchboxes, and feed them ants, grasshoppers, and other insects—until it was time to play.
When two of us were ready to fight, we would place our spiders on the opposite ends of a stick of walis tingting, a kind of broom. Another person, who acted as a referee, was usually asked to hold the stick. Then, we’d nudge our spiders to walk toward one another and fight. The winner of the wrestling match was decided very quickly, sometimes within seconds or at most a few minutes. It ended when one of the spiders was killed or incapacitated, or when a spider either fell off the stick or tried to run away more than once.
We had names for the different spiders we commonly caught: gagambang botchog (round spider), gagambang pari (priest-like spider), gagambang ekis (spider with an X). Sometimes we would give them nicknames based on their appearances: gagambang pula (red spider) or Voltes V (after a Japanese anime character).
Could it be that this game desensitized us to spiders, making us less fearful of them in contrast to many other parts of the world?
This question interests me not just because of nostalgia for the spiders of my childhood but as an anthropologist who today explores human entanglements with other species. I’m fascinated by how we perceive and live with other creatures, including animals we pit against each other and play with—from cockfighting in Bali to bullfighting in Spain to cricket fighting in China.
When it comes to widespread fears surrounding spiders, a closer look reveals a more complicated picture of human responses and interactions with these creatures. The arachnologist David Wise, for instance, surveyed folk tales from North America to Africa that cast spiders in a positive light, leading him to conclude that not all societies are arachnophobic.
In the Philippines, a handful of scholarly accounts of laro ng gagamba depict people’s close relationships with spiders. Some of these detailed accounts remind me of my childhood days, while others go beyond my own experiences, showing how diverse and sophisticated the practice is across the country.
One example comes from an ethnographic account by cultural anthropologist Ty Matejowsky, who researched spider wrestling in Pangasinan province in Northern Luzon in the early 2000s. He recounts how boys and young men collect, train, and play with spiders, often for money. Although my experience of laro ng gagamba didn’t involve placing bets, Matejowsky sees the game as an entry point for many Filipinos into “gambling culture.” (He also presents the practice as exclusive to boys and men, but I remember playing it with neighbors who were girls.)
Matejowsky also details how players attempt to heal their spiders who may be hurt in battle. “As surprising as it may seem,” he notes, “steps can be taken to rehabilitate injured spiders for an eventual return to wrestling.” For instance, players place the leaves of ampalaya (bitter gourd), thought to have restorative properties, in the spider’s box for a few days before slowly resuming the regular diet of “insects and bits of meat and rice.”
Barrion-Dupo, with two biology colleagues, conducted a survey of 300 spider game players in Northern Mindanao from 2014 to 2015 that revealed more details of the practice. Gambling on laro ng gagamba matches, the investigators found at the time, could involve sums of up to 10,000 pesos (around US$180).
Fascinatingly, the researchers also recorded various substances people fed to the spiders to prepare for a fight. The list included various vitamins and supplements, dextrose, coconut water or meat, duck egg soup, Jujube plum fruit (Ziziphus jujuba), milk, honey, energy drinks, and even human breastmilk. The gamers usually placed these substances on cotton balls and left them in the boxes where the spiders were kept.
These details show that more than just a game, spider wrestling in the Philippines involves care and intimacy between humans and spiders. Matejowsky describes it as an “attachment … that approaches what some feel for more conventional pets.”
Today laro ng gagamba continues to be played in rural areas in some parts of the country. Barrion-Dupo sees the spider game as offering children “first steps in science and natural history,” ultimately contributing to an appreciation not just for spiders but for the environment at large.
However, the research by Barrion-Dupo and her colleagues also shows the game has a potentially detrimental impact on the populations of various spider species. Gamers usually extract mature reproductive females from the wild; female spiders, as it turns out, are more ferocious than their male counterparts. The researchers call for policies to restrict the game to prevent species decline.
As far as I know, spiders are not often included in animal rights discourses in the Philippines. (Matejowsky’s article noted spiders are considered “pests, not animals.”) However, these attitudes may change in the future; some people are already discussing the need to expand animal welfare concerns to include insects, spiders, and other invertebrates.
Even without active intervention, however, the game already seems to be declining in popularity.
When I recently returned to the neighborhood where I grew up, I was told that none of the kids ventured into the forests like my friends and I used to. During the pandemic, people were forbidden to go outdoors, and many public green spaces were off-limits for recreational activities. Plus, the advent of electronic gadgets and digital technologies has meant that children today, whether they live in urban neighborhoods or mountainous communities, are far more likely to be familiar with Spider-Man than the spiders that share their environments.
Regardless of the ultimate fate of laro ng gagamba, however, I hope our familiarity and fascination with spiders will continue.

I was re-watching some scenes from KP for a new fic I'm working on, and it was a neat observation that @artpo had noticed, so I wanted to talk a little bit about my own experience with English!
One of the things that honestly made me smile when I’d watched KP the first time about a year and a half ago was the random usage of English that was sprinkled throughout the show. As someone who took extensive ESL classes back when I first returned to the US from the Philippines during my childhood, this definitely hit close to home, since I struggled with English a lot as a kid. I didn’t have much time to study it when I was in school in PH, and it was hard for me to make friends during my elementary school years.
At least from where I’m sitting, and my own experience having lived abroad, being able to speak English fluently and confidently has always been considered an outward sign of sophistication and having been educated. In the Philippines for example, English is considered the official second language, and most people can speak it easily enough in and within the suburbs of Manila. As you get further out of the big cities though and into the provinces however, it’s not as readily spoken.
I imagine in Thailand, it would be something along those lines? Bangkok is the main commercial hub in Thailand, and English acts as the language for international business and politics. In Asia in general, especially within SE Asia, to be able to speak English is to show others that you're a worldly person.
For some people who are non-native speakers of English, it would probably have been a privilege to have had the time to study it and become fluent at it, yknow?
In KP, we see Kinn, Kim, Vegas, and Macau speak English in varying degrees, so in a way, this adds yet another layer to the image of the Theerapanyakuls as this glamorous and privileged family, imo. It’s not surprising that the Theerapanyakul heirs would know how to speak English and are all probably fluent at it, if only because they have extensive business connections overseas.
This actually shows up once or twice in the book too, since it’s a bit of a misunderstanding between Kinn and Porsche during their adventure in the woods, lol:
Tumblr media
But yeah, just something I thought that was really cool to see play out in KP, and how BOC really played up on just exactly how the Theerapanyakul family’s wealth and privilege has influenced them in different ways.

I made it just in time! My contribution for AAPI month: Immy in a Filipiniana inspired by gumamela (hibiscus)
it’s not the Philippines’ national flower, but it’s nostalgic to me as it was the flower that grew in front of my childhood home before we immigrated to the US. I thought the petals would make a beautiful skirt

Tumblr media
"Hi, Blade!
Sana pagnakita mo to, I didn't take 500 years to send it to you hehe. Or infact, di ako natakot and never sent it talaga. Sounds like something I'd do.
Anyways.. I think sobrang obvious naman na gusto kita, I mean childhood friends kami ehhh! Since grade 1 naalala kita sa buhay ko, and I really wouldn't have wished for anyone else to grow up with.
I know were gonna be super busy with college na, and I just.. nakakatakot haha. I know that you wanna move back home para you can be with your family ulit but I just.. Yoko talaga na aalis ka tas wala pa akong sinabi, di yan talaga tama sa puso ko eh. It's not right to torture my own heart with the what if's of life.
So when you read this, it's most likely nasa eroplano ka na or I ran off super dramatically kapag binagay ko to kase I don't want to know how you reacted sa talaga lang. I want to tell you and that's it, you're not obligated naman to return the feelings or ganun! Whatever your answer is, I will accept, and even if walang answer.. I'm sure I'll be okay. :) Gusto ko lang na alam mo that while you're gone, meron naman hihintay sayo hanggat babalik ka HAHAHA.
I really do hope future me gives this to you. I hope you're happy back home, and tell tita naghello ako please!
And I love you.
Ang panget mo, from : (name)."
You feel the paper in your pocket as the car ride to the airport was.. painfully silent. Not in a way that you had nothing to say, but both of you had too much to say. Not enough time as you already see the familiar building within your view, all the while still fidgeting with the paper with uneasiness.
You help Blade with his bags, seeing the dark circles under his eyes indicating he couldn't sleep until this moment. It's clear he's scared too, almost as if torn between home and home, the home he's made with you in the Philippines. "You okay..?"
Blade doesn't realize how he's just been staring at you, shaking his head and giving you what seemed to be the saddest smile you'd ever see on his face. "Wala lang."
You walk him to entrance, each step making your heart feel like it's being crushed by a hydraulic press. Blade went to grab a cart as you stood there and stared at the entrance, not being able to fathom that this was it. This was your last moments with him in person.
"So.."
He cleared his throat while you placed his bags onto the cart, looking up at him with those lost and admittedly scared eyes. Neither of you could hide the pain that came with the situation, both afraid for the future without the person you considered your other half. "I.. I just wanna say thank you, for being here and being in my life."
You chuckle, wiping away a tear as you try to smile. "I wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere else."
Then you remember the note, digging into your pockets and immediately recognizing its material and texture. You look back at Blade and sniffle, "I just wish there was more tim-"
But before you could finish, his arms wrap around you with such desperation. He held onto you like he didn't want to let go, which admittedly - he didn't want to.
You blink away your tears as your head rests on his shoulder, it's all going so fast. The day had long disappeared and the sky shifts to a dark blue, you hug him back as tightly as you could.
And in the moment, your heart drops at an idea.
"What if he falls inlove with someone he could actually be with?"
I mean.. the idea was possible, long distance relationships are.. hard. Certainly not for the faint of heart, and you'd both have to be ready for years of no physical contact.. not to mention being busy with college.
He could be with someone that's there for him 24/7, who can be the pillar to support him when you couldn't. Someone he deserves, and is one drive away, not on the other side of the world.
You were just about to slip the note into his pocket, but your hand stopped and you crumpled the letter in your own sadness.
"Uh.. Blade, I think it's time to go." You muttered, hesitantly pulling away even if it hurt your heart to do so. "Take care, okay?"
He smiles at those words, knowing you were his reminder to do so. "I'll do so for you."
That answer made your heart ache.
But Blade notices a piece of paper in your hands. Intrigued, he asks; "Ano yan?"
Taken aback by the fact he noticed, you tear up the paper and try to laugh it off. "Wala, just trash." But Blade rolls his eyes and takes it from your hand, despite your small gasp of surprise. "I'll throw it out."
You were.. hesitant about that, but you agree nevertheless.
You two share a little more time to talk before he realizes the time, and not wanting to be late for his flight - he decides that it's time to go.
"Thanks again, don't miss me too much." He teased to ease the tension.
You scoffed. "As if I'd miss you."
He loved it when you played along with his antics, he was really going to miss this. "Bye, (name)."
You stayed strong for these last moments, holding your tongue to stop yourself from crying out how much you loved him.. and begging him to stay.
"Goodbye, Blade."

i just realized something. my player characters with bethesda-mandated family (lone wanderer gwen and sole survivor sofia) are estranged from that family. meanwhile my couriers (moz, kiwi, and avery) have pretty good relationships with their families :) that's what happens when a backstory isn't forced to your character i guess!!
details under the cut
gwen and james, though stuck in close proximity in the vault for 19 years, are as distant as can be. james has his work, his projects. gwen has all the turbulent drama of childhood and teenage life. they have their moments, but otherwise? nothing much. except for lectures and reprimands, they don't really talk, especially post-james and ellen's divorce. gwen has more of a relationship with ellen and butch than james.
their relationship gets worse topside, when after all gwen has done to get to james is pushed to the side because all james can think of is project purity. so after he dies, what does gwen do? let his pet project die as well. she doesn't even know what the passcode number is, when sarah lyons asks her. how the fuck would she know? her father barely told her anything. she didn't know ellen deloria wasn't her biological mom until after james divorced ellen and told gwen the truth. she's not even sure if he loved her for herself, or if he just loved her the way a parent loves their child - as an extension of themself and their values. now that he's dead, she'll never know for sure.
sofia has a good relationship with her family back home in the philippines, all six siblings and both parents and both sets of grandparents, and countless uncles and aunts and cousins of them. the problem is nate. and shaun, eventually. the thing is, sofia never imagined herself marrying a foreigner, much less a blue-eyed american soldier. she never would have married nate if he hadn't gotten her pregnant. but with abortion being illegal in the philippines, and with nate being "a true gentleman" in his words, there was little else she could do.
in boston, a shotgun wedding. which turned into a loveless marriage pretty quick, once the honeymoon phase wore off. homesickness. morning sickness. anti-asian racist microagressions from neighbors who've never met a filipino before, even though america annexed the philippines decades ago. a miserable life, freshly post-partum and friendless and jobless, all alone in a big house with only a baby and a robot butler for company. who wouldn't fall into a deep depression?
and don't get me started on shaun. sofia placed all her hopes and dreams and joys on meeting her baby boy and watching him grow up, teaching him tagalog and sharing with him all her favorite meals and memories. can you imagine how sofia felt, when he got kidnapped? when she spent her first year in the post-apocalypse relentlessly trying to find him? when she killed kellogg in her rage and grief over him? when, finally, they meet and he isn't a baby but an old man, the leader of the group she's looking to dismantle, and she realizes that he came from her but he's not of her, he doesn't know her and she doesn't know him, and she hates everything he stands for, but still she's his mother and she loves him but she'll never like him? can you imagine???
meanwhile: moz and her big family with her mothers dalisay and philomena, her big brother lakan with his wife guadalupe and their eight kids (all adopted), and her husband ulysses and their child ree, plus everyone in the painted hairs, everyone in their town whom she calls tito and tita and ate and kuya and bunso and totoy and nene :) nothing but love and understanding there!!
kiwi and their family of butchers and tailors - grandmother, father, mother, and brothers, all adept with shiny sharp things. strict but loving, in the "i want what i think is best for you" kind of way. kiwi would have stayed if their father didn't keep forcing the butchershop and their straight marriage to a family friend's daughter on them. honestly if kiwi went home, they'd find their father a changed man - he only wants kiwi to be happy, really; if wearing sequins and being the right-hand man of mr house is the key to that happiness, then so be it!
avery is an only son, raised by a single mother after his ncr ranger father died. he and his mother will defend each other to death - which is why avery set fire to his mother's asshole (now ex-)boyfriend's house when he hurt avery's mom. on the run, avery still writes letters home. he never leaves a return address until after he gains amnesty for his arson charge. by then, his return address is the lucky 38. his mom sends him one hell of a letter. the first thing he does after winning the battle of hoover dam is go home to his mom :)

Ikaw Lamang.
Tumblr media
banner by @rkivian!!!
Summary: As a kid, you always had a connection to the earth, coming from a family of farmers, you grew up respecting and tending to the earth. You loved the earth, little do you know the earth loved you too. Now, as an adult and receiving pressure from your family to marry and have kids, maybe the earth can bless you in the most direct way possible.
(This is part of @/tohokuu’s fantasy collab! Go and check out the other works!)
Tags: @tohokuu, @cultofdionysusnet, @kwanisms, @yoonguurt, @lemonhongjoong, @shinestarhwaa, @stardragongalaxy, @seongwin, @sanjoongie, @flowerboykun, @wooyoungmybelovedhusband, @anyamaris, @dimpledsatan, @ilovetnbhd
Characters/Pairing: Diwata!Jongho x Environmentalist!Reader
Genre: Fluff, smut, the tiniest amount of angst but has a happy ending!
AU/Trope info: Philippine myth AU! The Diwata is an Elf/Fairy figure in Philippine myth that lives in trees and blesses those who tend to the earth and curse those who defile it. They are typically very powerful and beautiful, humanoid in appearance but paler and more conventionally attractive, they are sometimes in committed relationships with humans and have children with them. The equivalent of the Diwata is the Engkanto, however, they are basically the same and can be used interchangeably. Also, readers’ Filipino parents are your typical south-east Asian parents kind of pushy. They’ve known of Jongho’s existence ever since the reader was a kid, Jongho is the reader’s childhood guardian and they know he’s immortal/supernatural.
Word Count: 1.8k (Putangina)
Warnings: The reader is female, parents are kinda misogynistic(but not explicitly??), parents are fucking terrified of Jongho, a Korean named Diwata in a Filipino myth au???, dirty smut against a giant boulder on the forest floor, forest wedding <3, some Tagalog words and swear words here and there, Duende!Wooyoung cameo!
A/N: The title “Ikaw Lamang” means “only you” in Tagalog ^^ I wanted to make this cute n fluffy Jongho fic with Filipino myth elements since I barely see any Jongho content, let alone Pinoy myth fanfics. Also, this is a reupload from @hwasrie, my old blog, I am re-uploading my own work, I did not plagiarize.
Tumblr media
“Lintik kang-” You swear as the hot oil splashes on your arms, you are frying fish for dinner, the loud sizzle and the overwhelming smell of fish flood your senses. Your dad gave you a weird look for swearing at the fish. You fish (haha) out the angry dish from the kawale as you set it down on a wooden plate with a banana leaf. You sigh, setting the plate down on the table as you cover it to keep the flies off.
“I’m off to see Jongho, I promised to help him clean up the hiking trail.”
You say as you leave out the back door. The sun was setting already, the gravel beneath you looking like gold as you walked to the forest’s edge. “Jongho?” you say to a tree, a strong gust of wind blows from inside the forest, distant windchimes harmonize in a song.
“You called?”He smiles at you. “Oo, you need help with the hiking trail yeah? I skipped dinner tonight, I was a bit worried about the damage the hikers caused. It always gets worse during this season.” You said, walking towards the mouth of the forest to stand in front of him.
“Yeah, you shouldn’t skip dinner though, after we clean up the trail I’ll send you back home. I’m sure your parents miss me.” He jokes, you laugh along as well, his light laugh, bright smile, and brighter teeth make it almost morning again. Even after all these years he never failed to make your stomach flutter with butterflies.
You near the hiking trail, you look around confused, it looks clean; too clean? “Uh, Jongho, I think they didn’t leave as much as you think they did. It kinda looks like they took more than they left.” You turn around to look at him, his hands in the pockets of his pants. “Okay, I may have cleaned up while you were busy, but I had a reason to.” He takes your hand and leads you further up the trail. A Balete tree comes into the scene, he pushes you into the tree, you see your vision spinning before a nighttime scene of an overgrown wooden hut comes into view.
“Jongho? Why did you take me to your place? What’s going on?” None of your questions are answered as he ushers you to sit near the crystal river with him. As you dip your feet into the cool water, he finally says, “I heard what your parents said earlier.” You froze, Oh, Putangina. How much did he hear? Your shoulders slack. “Oh, you know now?” You asked him quietly, your voice barely above a whisper. ”Yeah, I was about to ask you who, but I know it’s a particularly touchy subject for you.” He sighs, curling his toes under the cool water.
“Jongho, I don’t want any of them, I don’t want to settle for a marriage that makes me miserable. I don’t want to be seen as a submissive wife, or some baby-carrying object.” You bite your lip as you rant your desperation to him. He seemed sympathetic, he was helping you think of a way out of it. “You know, you could just marry me.” He said, with that, your head snapped up towards him, you knew the implication of marrying a Diwata, you knew just how much marriage meant to them, why was he offering it so nonchalantly?
“Jongho, you know what, I don’t mind at all, but you do know what that means, right? I remember you telling me just how bad it could get for you, what if they-” He cut you off by placing a hand on your thigh, squeezing it comfortingly. “I know, I was already on really thin ice when I would casually show up to your place in front of your parents. I don’t think complete exile from the rest of them makes much of a difference now.” He smiles solemnly.
“Maybe I should ask more properly?” He tilts his head, smiling at you, “Will you marry me?” He asks, taking his hand off your thigh and opting to hold your hand instead, bringing it up to his face and kissing the knuckles. Your heart swells, I mean, I did have the biggest crush on him for the longest time. You say to yourself. “Yes.” You say as you nodded. A bright smile spreads across his face. “Let’s go tell your parents about the news then.
You both leave the pocket dimension of the Balete Tree, treading down the hill toward your humble tiny home. Once you two arrive at your house, your parents (fearfully) give their blessing for your marriage, not wanting to upset the Diwata. It was settled then, your wedding would be held on the next full moon, following Diwata customs.
Tumblr media
The day of your marriage arrived, Wooyoung, Jongho’s Duende friend, officiated your marriage by the Balete tree. Only the three of you were present at the wedding, due to Diwata customs, only the couple and the officiator are to be present at the ceremony, though Jongho agreed to a human reception just to appease your pushy family members.
As you put on your wedding necklaces, the pendant burns a mark into your skin, as did Jongho’s, officially sealing your marriage to him. Wooyoung clapped as he congratulated you on your marriage, swiftly leaving as Jongho pulled you into the tree. He picked you up easily, laying you down gently on a boulder by the river, the flowing water helps to ease your nerves. This was the final action to seal your marriage, Jongho has to connect with you on a spiritual level by physically connecting your bodies.
He holds your face in his palms, the warmth seeping into your cheeks as he pressed his forehead on yours, “May I kiss you?” He asked, you nodded. He presses a gentle kiss on your lips, your hands hold onto his shoulders as he presses you more into the rock, the cold stone somehow feels comfortable as he holds your hips down. He pulls away as he kisses down the column of your neck, you sigh in content, he was treating you so delicately. His hands ride up your thighs squeezing the flesh as he tugs at the string of your wedding necklace with his teeth, you arch your back into his chest, your hands lacing behind his neck as you pull him closer to you. He takes advantage of your arched back by unzipping your dress, he carefully peels off the cotton as he faces your body, clad in only your underwear. He soon discards his top as he pressed his firm chest against yours, unclasping your bra as he tosses it aside.
“You’re beautiful.” He chants as he presses small pecks across your shoulders, you whimper under his touch, your head pressing against the cold stone. He hooks his finger on the band of your underwear and swiftly pulls it down, he groans, and he noses your pelvis as he takes in your scent. He pulls away, pulling down his bottoms, his hard cock comes into view, your nerves doing nothing to ease your excitement.
He places your legs over his thighs, his thumb running over your folds and pressing lightly on your clit, you clench around nothing as he continues to draw circles on your heat with calloused fingers. His dick is heavy on your thigh, he holds your hips and squeezes the skin, you buck up your hips, the underside of his shaft hits your clit and both of you gasp in surprise. “Ah- be patient, please, I’m nervous…” Jongho confesses, of course, you’d be nervous too if you had to stuff your best friend full of cum until the sun rises.
“Don’t be, I’m ready.” You whisper as if saying something in a loud voice would shatter the careful atmosphere that you and Jongho had created. He nods, the tip of his cock prodding at your hole, you hold onto his broad shoulders as he pushes in, the thick length stretching you out, giving the feeling of a pleasurable burn. He finally pushes in the last inch of his dick, his pelvis flushed against yours as you breathe out a sigh, releasing the breath you didn’t know you were keeping. He wraps his arms around you, his nose buried in the crook of your neck as he breathes in your scent to calm him down, your bodies impossibly close. Both of you stay like that for a while, just breathing and enjoying each other’s warmth, that was until you gave an experimental roll of your hips. You bit your lip as Jongho groans, holding you so tightly to his body that you feel every ridge and muscle he has on his body.
He finally pins you down onto the cold stone, the heavyweight of his body acts as your anchor, he starts to roll his hips in a steady rhythm, you moan into his shoulder as he starts to fuck into you harder, your nails scratching at his shoulder blades as he continues you ravage you. “Ah, fuck- Jongho! Jongho!” Your cries muffle into the skin of his shoulder, tears prick the corners of your eyes as the pleasure overwhelms you, he moans into your ear when you give him a particularly hard squeeze, “Shit baby, keep doing that-” he groans into the air as your moans start to have a higher pitch. He felt so good, so deep inside you, hitting just the right spot to make you see stars. The moment was intense, hot, passionate; he was so gentle yet calculated with how well he led you up the hill to your edge. You were panting, desperately holding onto Jongho as both of you approach the edge, the intensity of your eye contact helping both of you to ease into your climax.
“Jongho, Jongho, Jongho-! I’m gonna cum-” You cry desperately, “Fuck, babe, I’m so close-” He whines, soon after, both of you topple off the edge, your orgasm greets you like warm waters, embracing you tightly to the point that it knocks the air out of your lungs, flooding your senses with nothing but hot, white, pleasure as Jongho covers your insides with white. Your mouth opens in a silent cry, your eyes rolling to the back of your head while you cringe in oversensitivity and exhaustion. Jongho realizes this, so he slowly pulls out and carries you to the crystal clear river, the cold of the water soothes your aching body as he takes his take to clean both of you.
“Thank you, (Y/N).” He says, “No, Jongho, thank you. If you didn’t offer to marry me, then I would’ve been forced to marry some ugly salesman.” He snorts at your answer, “But, even if you didn’t, if I had a choice, I would’ve still chosen you, Ikaw lamang, laging ikaw.”
Tumblr media
A/N:YHEW- I suck ASS at writing smut T-T I hope you enjoyed this read, reblogs, replies, and asks are very much appreciated! I said I was going to explain the Tagalog words I used, but since I used so little it’s probably better if you just google it. THANKS FOR READINGGGG <<<333

Crispy & Spicy [Grey & Stanford]
FOR THE SEASIANS OUT THERE HEEHEE
Grey is @blackkatdraws narrator, comfort character
—————
Stanford can cook for himself. It’s in his genes, and his mom taught him early. Cooking is a valuable skill for survival, and it was indeed handy during his college days and his internship away from home.
His lunch often came from the office himself. Sausages and grits, hashbrowns and butter chicken, salads, et cetera. The kitchen is supervised by his boss’ brother sometimes, and it’s good from his perspective. The food is seasoned perfectly, the spices aren’t too overwhelming, and there’s always something new in the cafeteria.
Sometimes, he brought his home-cooked lunch when he was in a mood. Leftovers whipped into something easier for him to eat during his experiment in his workshop.
Little treats, like today’s lunch; Lumpia with stir-fried vermicelli noodles and leftover spicy pork saksang as the filling.
Grey’s eyes lit up in curiosity when Stanford unpacked his lunch, revealing the little fried rolls, glistening in golden brown colour from the shine of the oil. “What’s that?” He asked, now getting closer to him, sniffing a bit. “Is that lumpia?”
`Made them with things from my fridge.` The mechanic answered shortly through his usual Google Translator, pushing his lunchbox towards the Narrator. `I tried to remake my favourite childhood dish, but I ended up making too much.` He picked up the fried roll and took a bite, enjoying the crunch of the outer layer and the surprisingly well-combined combo as he let out a slight hum.
With no hesitation, Grey took a piece and bit one in half, face light up in delight.
The intense flavour from the herbs and spices of pork melted together with the sweet taste of stir-fried vegetables, and the vermicelli noodles became the perfect vessel to soak in the combined taste of spicy, savoury, and a bit of sweet. Bits of crunchy pork fat offered a stark texture contrast in each bite. Chewy from the meat and noodles, crispy from the fried dough skin, and crunchy from the fried fat bits, creating a wonderful combination he couldn’t get enough of.
“It’s good!” Grey exclaimed, finally putting the rest of the roll into his mouth. “You’re good at cooking! Can I have more?”
Stanford glanced at the taller man and back at the lunch box, contemplating whether he should give the other the rest of his lunch.
On one side, he could’ve let him. He has some uncooked ones in his home and could enjoy them for dinner.
On the other side, though, he wanted to eat…lumpia…
…Man, Grey could make an irresistible pleading face.
The mechanic sighed in defeat, before taking one more piece for himself and pushing the rest of the content towards the other. `I can get lunch at the cafeteria, don’t worry.` He gave his piece of reassurance. Cafeteria food is still good for him.
Seeing the Narrator’s face once again light up in happiness is worth the sacrifice of his lunch.
——————
BONUS:
“How do you know how to make lumpia?” Grey asked again, tossing the last piece of the treat into his mouth. “Lumpia is from the Philippines. One of filipino’s most well-known food.”
Stanford raised his eyebrow. `Lumpia is from Indonesia too, though.`
The Narrator let out a small ‘huh’. “Look up on Google?”
`Google it is.`
That’s how they found that lumpia originated from China, brought in by immigrants in both countries.
