Stonathan prompt from @atmilliways:
Jonathan knows the camera that Nancy gave him was actually from Steve because he was wistfully peering into the Radio Shack or whatever one day and saw Steve buying it, then recognized it when Will unwrapped it.
Jonathan smiles when Will holds up the camera he unwrapped. His eyes go to the Wheeler house. The smile isn't for Nancy, though, because he saw Steve purchase it during one of the many times he allowed himself a longing glance through the window. At the time, Jonathan had been furious. Even if Steve was slowly winning him over, the sight of him so easily getting what Jonathan wanted made him tempted to punch the guy all over again. And if the 'gift' had been given by Steve, Jonathan would have continued to be furious because even if it was replacing what Steve broke, it would be a flaunt of wealth and what a good guy he was now. At least with Nancy giving it, the flaunt was just for her.
A part of him wishes it was for him; that Steve had come back into the house for him. Steve doesn't want to impress him, though, he wants to impress Nancy and the taste of that bitter pill stays with Jonathan for a year.
"Name," Murray demands.
"Steve," Jonathan answers.
"Steve," Murray mocks, "we like Steve."
Jonathan thinks 'we do' because the last year has seen Steve lingering like a stray dog that was fed once then never left. He finds Jonathan at school or invites him to hang out. They talk, mostly about nothing and occasionally about something. Their asshole fathers is a common trauma to bond over. All the while, Jonathan waits for Steve to take credit for the camera, to demand praise and recognition.
Then the moment he and Nancy are behind closed doors, kissing and headed for the bed, Jonathan is struck by the thought he wants it to be Steve. That is what made him kiss Nancy in the first place. A last grasp at denial since it should be her. He could make it her, pretend the love he felt for her wasn't platonic, but that wasn't fair to either of them.
"What about Steve?" he asks and she looks embarrassed. Ashamed.
"We broke up," she admits. "At least, I think we did? He said he was done with my bullshit. Maybe it was just a fight. I-" She looks small and conflicted. Jonathan wraps her in his arms and she cries herself to sleep.
Later, after Will is safe and the portal is closed, Nancy whispers to Jonathan as they drive back to the house, "He told me to go with you."
Jonathan's chest aches. He adjusts his grip on the steering wheel; glances in the rearview mirror to his mom cradling his brother. He'd fallen apart as the infection was burned from his little brother. Nancy was the only thing that kept him together, and the reason he had her there was Steve.
"What happened to your face?" Jonathan asks when they are all back together. A flurry of explanation comes from Will's friends. He stops them then drags Steve to the bathroom to get him properly fixed up. Out in the living room, he hears Hopper organizing getting the kids home with Nancy.
"I've had a hell of a day, Byers," Steve slurs. He hisses at the sting of the rubbing alcohol. His eyes start to close.
"I know you gave me the camera," Jonathan says because it's the first thing he can think of to keep Steve awake now that the adrenaline has worn off. "Last Christmas."
Steve mumbles something. It takes Jonathan a moment to realize he's singing.
"Are you singing 'Father Christmas'?"
"Mmhmm."
"Okay, we should get you to the hospital."
"I'm good."
"You aren't."
"Give all the toys," Steve more rambles than sings, "to the little rich boys."
"Yeah, I get it. Come on." Jonathan slides his arm around Steve to haul him to his feet. "You probably need stitches, anyway."
He risks leaving Steve standing in the hallway to check on his mom and Will. His mother barely looks at him when he tells her he's taking Steve to the hospital, too emotionally and physically exhausted to do more than hold Will as he sleeps. He might join her once he feels Steve isn't at risk of dying in his sleep.
"So the camera," he tries again in the car to keep Steve talking.
"I broke your camera so I bought you a new one," Steve states with a shrug. "I didn't want it to be just a replacement to you, though. I wanted it to feel like something special."
"So you had Nancy give it to me."
Steve humms an affirmation. "I knew we weren't friends."
"We are now," Jonathan ventures. He chances a look over at Steve and catches hazel eyes staring at him. "What?"
"Thinking."
"About?"
"You."
Jonathan frowns. "What about me?"
"That now would be when I'd ask you out if you were a girl. I'd say 'we could be more' and you would blush- Yeah, like that."
The frown deepens. Jonathan feels the heat of the blush Steve just called out spreading across his cheeks. "Why?"
"Because you're you." Steve's eyes close so Jonathan pinches his arm. They're almost there.
"What do you mean?"
"That I like you," Steve explains with a tired smile. He blinks too slow. "You're, like, insightful and have a cute kind of sarcastic humor and are hot in a Mary Ann way."
"But only if I was a girl." It hurts a little, but isn't anything Jonathan didn't know. He's just glad Steve is still awake and talking. Just a few more blocks.
"Or if it was okay that you're a boy."
That throws Jonathan for a loop. He understands what Steve means. 'I've always thought you were a queer' plays through his mind along with all the other homophobia baked into this town. There is also genuine hurt in Steve's voice, like he's mourning that he can't just ask Jonathan out.
Fuck that.
"It's okay with me," Jonathan states. He can feel Steve's eyes on him. An inhale gathers Jonathan's thoughts. "So if after you aren't suffering from a head injury, you still want to ask me out, I'll say yes. If not, well, I guess this conversation didn't happen."
Steve is quiet and Jonathan would be worried if they weren't pulling up to the ER. Neither of them say anything as Steve checks in. Then Jonathan is back home without time to think about their conversation because his mother and brother need him. He takes the week off from school to take care of Will because his mom doesn't even get time to grieve before she's back to worm. Bob was just her boyfriend, afterall, and the only thing they do get is another meal train organized by Nancy Wheeler. The casseroles are all the same recipes from when Will went missing.
Jonathan hates how strongly scent is tied to memory.
There is a knock at the door. Jonathan is expecting another tuna or chicken or insert ingredient here surprise, but it's Steve. He holds out a box of film.
"I thought you would like it more than flowers," he says and Jonathan can't think of anything to say so he just takes the box, eyes remaining on Steve.
"Anyway," Steve continues after clearing his throat, "you want to go out sometime?"
A smile forms slowly on Jonathan's lips. "Sounds like a date."

Hello!
I'm creating a GDQ break channel as a coding exercise and I couldn't help but notice your Mega Man one is incredible. I was wondering what, if any, tools you used to work with sprites and 2D animation in general. I'm new to PIXI and animation as code in general so any tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Hey, thank you so much! I didn't know much about PIXI before either, so when I started the Mega Man channel, it was mainly just reading the code of the other channels that do something similar to what I did, and seeing how it works there. For me, that channel was Corvimae's T-Rex Runner channel, it's a fairly simple one with a bunch of examples of working with 2D sprites in PIXI!
(For others seeing this post: Here's a link to the channels on the break screens on Games Done Quick streams - they are open-source, and anyone can make their own. If you're up for a small coding project and have a neat idea, and want to contribute to the GDQ stream layout, I highly recommend it, it's a lot of fun!)
For sprite animations using frames, one tool that really helped me is Texture Packer. It allows you to take all your seperate sprite files and put them all together into one atlas, so you can access them via references like mySpritesheetVar.textures.coin instead of having to manage all of the texture objects and offsets yourself. That makes sprite animations a lot easier: To create something like the walk cycle, I just loaded all of the frames as seperate layers in GIMP (or whatever image editor you prefer) and aligned all the layers so they lined up like they should when the animation plays. From there, you can export each layer as a seperate file, with all the empty space still around them. These can then be added to Texture Packer, which will take care of trimming off all of that transparency, but it will also make sure everything is aligned just like you set it once the atlas is loaded! You'll have to manually define the animations in the JSON file after exporting it (which is just an array of the file names of the seperate frames). But after that, you can simply assign the animation to any AnimatedSprite object by using a reference like mySpritesheetVar.animations.walkCycle and PIXI will take care of everything. (Don't forget to call the play() method to actually start the animation - that had me confused at first.)
As for animations involving sprite movement, in most cases, you should be able to keep it simple, and just move objects by a constant amount each frame. It's easy to set up, ensures that everything always lines up correctly, and there's often no need for more complicated approaches (especially for a retro-styled channel, where most things move in straight lines anyway). Most of the objects in the MM channel do something like this, such as the shots moving at a constant speed. There's also no need for proper collision detection for objects like them - taking pickups as an example, I just compare their X coordinate against a constant value to see whether it is close enough to the left side of the screen to be collected (which also helps to make sure the items can never be jumped over).
But since the channels are based on games, one tip I can give is to try out a little bit of physics-based animation - if the movement of your sprite works the same as the one from the original game, you can get good-looking results fairly quickly! Jumps, for example, can be done by setting an upwards vertical speed for the sprite and then applying gravity to it every frame, to get a really nice jump arc. For this kind of movement, since you are trying to replicate a game, there's a lot of similarities to code you would write for games. The main difference is that there's no player input, the jumping is instead controlled by donations and timers. So, looking up platformer physics tutorials might help with implementing these animations - to see how the physics behind the movement work, and how you can apply them to the sprites here!
If any questions come up about how something in the MM channel works, feel free to drop me a chat! Looking forward to seeing your channel :)

I'm talking about writing with some folks on Discord, and it's kind of amusing looking back at my fics...
With my first two - So I Kept Pretending & Paragon of Invention - I basically published every day or two. I had no idea what I was doing, and I was worried I would lose readers if I didn't post fast enough. It was also just such a thrill to get kudos/comments, that it was hard to hold back from posting my first draft as soon as I had it. So these fics ended up being on the shorter side, and not as well-edited. But I'm still pretty proud of them.
Then came It's a Metallo Life & No One and Nothing, where I published weekly-ish. It gave me time to edit and think. NOAN was so much effort, just from a canon-compliance perspective, and I really needed to take time hashing out the outline before I started writing.
The first chapter of Even Though You're Kryptionian was published on a total whim, since Supercorp was on the cusp of 20,000 fics, and I was in kind of a writing rut. So I decided I would get us to hit 20k. I think I took about two weeks between chapters here, letting myself edit and revise. And I think taking more time really helped the fic. (The funny thing is... this was originally meant to be a throw-away fic that was basically 3 one-shots loosely tied together. But in taking my time, I was really able to integrate the story, and now I think it's my best fic.)
So now I'm on Darkness in All Things (which I actually thought I'd publish before ETYK, but there were still outline issues I needed to resolve first), and I'm taking my time, targeting about 2 weeks, but taking it slow. Since the Supercorp Big Bang adjusted their schedule due to the AO3 DDoS (which is 100% the right call), and I'm trying not to publish less than 2 weeks apart now, that means DIAT is taking longer to roll out than I thought. But like with ETYK, I think it's giving me time to really solidify the type of story I want to tell. (Though I still think ETYK will probably be the better fic. But DIAT gives me the chance to do some fun stuff. We'll see how people like it.)
I'm still a newer author, but in some ways, I feel like I really developed over the past year, and it's nice to see these projects come to life and see people enjoying them.

I mean Sometimes adaptations do improve upon the originals. Like ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’, with adaptations where Splinter is literally the ninja master Hamato Yoshi mutated into a giant rat, versus those where he’s just the mutated person rat of the long-deceased Yoshi. Like the new film for instance seemingly went for the latter origin, but had some subtle hints throughout that it might actually be the former origin, and that’ll be saved as a sequel twist.
Sorry I am not a TMNT fan so I have no idea what you just said, but I agree sometimes adaptations can be great and better than the source material. I don't really know what my problem is but it's kinda like I have a 'it-came-out-first-so-its-better' mindset. I sort my adaptations into one of five categories, those being Good Adaptation-Good Content (where it's true to the source material and a good form of media that I would like to consume), Mid Adaptation-Good content ( where things have been changed from the source material but it's still good shit), Bad adaptation-Good content ( no where near being accurate to its original but still good), Bad Adaptation-Mid Content (just meh in general) and last but certainly the least; Bad Adaptation-Bad content (this category is where I put most adaptations but at this point of my life I've realised I'm kinda too nitpicky about these things ( No shit sherlock, How'd you find out, did the time you got kicked out of your friends house because you couldn't just shut up and watch The Princess Diaries and had to keep pointing out the things it changed (which was a lot because they were trying to condense the plot of like 11 books into two movies) provide any insights?).
In the case of Artemis Fowl Movies I think it falls into the category of Bad Adaptation, Bad Content but that's my personal opinion. I much prefer the source material and even if the movies itself is kinda mid it pales in comparison to the books.
As for black butler; I haven't watched any of the adaptations or read the manga so I haven't formed an opinion of them yet. My friend dislikes the latest adaptation that's supposed to be coming out in 2024 ( I think I'm not sure) so I'm working based off of his opinions that the new adaptation is probably crap but I probably shouldn't do that.
But you know what people are allowed to like whatever they want to like (as long as what they like isn't harmful or illegal like idk drugs or something) my opinions are irrelevant, who cares if some nerd on the internet thinks the movie you like sucks, you do you and watch that crappy adaptation. ( It's probably a Mid adaptation but my brain likes to tell me if it's not 100% accurate it's bad)

well barbie and blitzo’s interactions killed me just as i expected, but i just want to talk about this:
Tumblr media
we can see that barbie’s mad at blitzo for whatever reason, but something about this scene feels off to me. and i think i’ve pinpointed why
blitzo is no stranger to people being mad at him, in fact it happens in most episodes. of course some people‘s feelings mean more to him, such as maybe m+m, stolas or even fizzarolli, but he doesn’t shy away from defending himself and speaking his mind to even them. he always has some shit to say, and always sticks up for himself in his own blitzo way
but with barbie he doesn’t, he just stares at her with that sad little look of regret on his face. even in this scene:
Tumblr media
blitzo recoils away from barbie. doesn’t defend himself. doesn’t argue with her. just recoils.
blitzo obviously feels shame and regret over whatever has happened between him and barbie, otherwise he would’ve stuck up for himself. however i also think he views barbie as completely innocent and out of the wrong regarding whatever happened, instead possibly blaming himself, due to one thing:
barbie was never in blitzo’s bad trip. striker, fizz, verosika, moxxie and stolas were, but not barbie. all of these people he views negatively (or has previously viewed somewhat negatively in moxxie’s and stolas’ case) but barbie is no where to be seen. obviously something has happened in the past with her as with the others, but unlike them he can’t bring himself to hate her for it
edit: just gonna throw it out there that blitzo recoils when barbie presses their mother’s choker. make of that what you will

Izzy and Noah being nerds ft. a very confused Eva
With Izzy's high IQ and 1000 thoughts zooming through her head at light speed, she 100% strikes me as the type of girl who created a whole language just for fun. It sounds like complete gibberish, so when she's using it everyone just assumes it's Izzy being Izzy.
Noah's the first one who starts picking up on a pattern in her 'gibberish' and asks her about it. Izzy denies it because she thinks it's funnier if she does.
Noah knows she's lying. Izzy knows that Noah knows she's lying. Noah knows that Izzy knows that Noah knows she's lying. This is an endless loop of knowing. The point is, Noah is now convinced to call her out on this lie out of sheer spite.
He starts paying more attention. He starts reading books on linguistics. He has a journal with theories and what he's managed to translate so far.
Eva has to be the one to tell Noah to chill for once. Eva believes him because she believes Izzy would do something like that. He can stop. Noah would love to. But his pride and his intelligence have been insulted. He just can't.
Plus, despite all outward appearances, this is actually pretty fun for him. He doesn't get a lot of intellectual challenges. Izzy's also enjoying feeding him clues and being a little gremlin about this. And hearing him have little mental breakdowns such as 'Is she seriously using that monosyllable as both a prefix and suffix with different meanings?!'
Eventually Noah gets confident enough to respond to her when she says something in Izzy Language. She lights up like a Christmas tree and responds in kind. Next thing either of them knows they're carrying a full blown conversation.
Leaving Eva, who has been been standing there this whole time, to go:
Tumblr media
Eventually they explain things to her. Eva doesn't really care to learn it herself but won't stop them from going off so long as they don't use it to leave her out of conversations.
She does pick up a few words though: Their names. Yes. No. Stop.
And every swear word.
Naturally.

Would hwr reader be the cool wine aunt? (I can see her accidentally getting drunk off wine thinking it was grape juice or non alcoholic, then chrollo having to supervise her the whole night lol)
anon ... are you a secret telepath because i've considered so many variations of this exact scenario.
for some context on HWR reader's abysmal alcohol tolerance — certain bloodlines from her home country hailed from the dark continent. they could temporarily boost their abilities, whether it be the five senses, strength, or speed, at the cost of enduring excruciating pain once the burst ends. a peculiar side effect owing to this constitution is that those who possess it are extremely sensitive to psychoactive substances. so, understandably, she takes great care in avoiding anything that could land her in a precarious position.
the common language in hxh isn't her native tongue, so if a word or term is obscure enough, all bets are off. for instance, in the earlier days when she just joined the troupe, paku once offered her a nightcap. HWR reader accepted. imagine her confusion when she was presented with a drink. it didn't look like any hat she'd seen before. the troupe greatly perplexed her at first.
the scenario you proposed has definitely happened before. here's the basic rundown:
her and chrollo were staking out an event under the pretense of being guests. a wandering waiter offered her a drink from his tray. it wasn't held in a champagne chute, martini glass, or the like, there was no indication to the beverage's true nature. she inquired over the ingredients. the waiter listed off what made up the concoction. the name of the hard liquor went over her head, it was the lovechild of a recent startup the event's owner had invested in to 'diversify his investment portfolio.'
it lacked the bitter tang commonly associated with alcohol. it was slightly sweet with a tarte aftertaste.
whilst sipping away and fraternizing with the other attendees, chrollo reappeared. he'd been piecing together a mental blueprint of the estate for later use. he easily integrated back into the social scene, almost as if he'd never left in the first place. before he'd even reentered the grand reception area, he'd caught onto a fluctuation in HWR reader's impeccable aura. while not an outright cause for alarm, he found it odd.
(some not SFW beneath the cut)
although he hid it well, he was genuinely surprised to see his normally abstinent lover indulging herself. she was critiquing the research of two gentlemen who had been not so subtly flaunting their game-changing findings the entire evening. the men appeared scandalized as she pointed out inconsistencies in their data and the like. he swooped in only when it became evident the men were about to raise a fuss, smoothly excusing him and his increasingly irate date.
he could roughly guess how this predicament came to be. he explained to her in a low and steady voice that this drink actually has a high alcohol concentration. it took a moment for her impaired cognition to catch up with his words. when the realization hit, however, she was not enthused.
by the time they'd made it back to their 'borrowed' vehicle, her legs were unsteady. there was a thin glaze over her eyes, like she was only half-present. on the drive back to the hotel, she'd randomly continue her earlier critique in an incomprehensive murmur. he never knew poorly falsified data was such an unforgivable slight in her eyes.
chrollo was growing increasingly intrigued by this unfiltered version of his otherwise prim and proper girlfriend. did he feel bad that she ended up in this position? kinda, but he wouldn't let anything happen to her. or, to be more precise, let anything happen to the civilians in the immediate area. not out of compassion, mind you, but for convenience's sake. he's trying to maintain a low profile in this area until the heist's completion. a dangerous, sword-wielding woman capable of wiping out an entire town's population should she see fit would be counteractive to this goal.
he dutifully keeps an eye on her in their suite. she vacillates between forgetting he's there or eagerly engaging him in a wide array of topics. everything from the separation of church and state to 'if he really likes her.' at this point, she'd shrugged off her outer garments (with his assistance), the heat of inebriation unbearable. chrollo had been exercising every modicum of self-control in his body as she crawled into his lap, perching herself there like it was her throne. her fingers, free from her usual gloves, brushing along the various grooves of his face.
"pretty," she hums. her blissed out expression, breathy voice, and the pressure of her body against his crotch makes him strain to behave himself. "my pretty boy."
he's grateful that she isn't lucid enough to note the rosy blush that spreads over his cheeks at this unexpected praise.
in a languid motion, her arms wrap around his neck. she embraces him tight enough that he can feel the soft swell of her chest, threatening to spill out from its restraints. she plays with the ends of his hair, humming a melody unknown to him, perfectly content. he allows himself some indulgence — his hands settle on either side of her hips. to help steady her, he tells himself. for such a proficient liar, this excuse is admittedly pathetic.
"boss."
"hm?"
"i have a secret," she whispers. this piques his curiosity, overriding his previous sentiments to respect her privacy. selfishly, he hopes she doesn't remember this come morning. otherwise, he'll be in for an earful...
"oh?" he goads her on. "and what would that be?"
(goodbye plausible deniability).
her lips brush against his outer ear and he shivers.
"i've fallen in love with someone."
his breath hitches in his throat. he ceases his previous ministrations of rubbing circles into her skin. despite enjoying three years of sex, heists, and frequent companionship, those infamous three words have yet to be uttered. they've made it evident that they're exclusive, but that's about it. neither of them have delved into the nitty and gritty of whatever their relationship truly means.
momentarily, he forgets how to weave elaborate webs that ensnare his victims right where he wants them. all eloquence and posturing melts away. what little of him that leaves remaining utters his next two words, not the persona whose charisma could rival a manipulator's hatsu.
"with who?"
the raw, guttural urgency he speaks this inquiry with is foreign to his ears. he wonders what he'd do should she profess devotion for another. would he have what it takes to respect her choice? it's a silly question; of course he wouldn't, not past a chilling smile that doesn't reach his eyes.
alas, this hypothetical is put to rest. its his name that she speaks. the accent she tries suppressing sneaks out, curling around each slowly enunciated syllable. after what feels like an eternity, he relaxes, sinking back into the plush couch.
"don't tell him," there's a threatening edge to her voice.
chuckling softly, he hugs her tighter.
"i won't."

ROTTMNT Character Fight Style Analysis - Part 1: Leonardo
Tumblr media
Eeeeyyyy it's finally here. This is my analysis of each character's fight style and role post that I teased about a week ago. This turned out to be a hell of a thing, so this will be split into many posts focusing on each character since I have quite a bit to say (and I think Tumblr might break if I put it all into one post). I plan to release one a day, but we'll see how it works out with school.
[Part 2: Raph] [Part 3: Mikey] [Part 4: Donnie] [Part 5: April]
~-~-~
If there's one thing Rise is known for, it is the show's stellar action animation - it's the reason most people started the show to begin with. The visuals are so strong in these scenes, in fact, that Rise could have easily gotten away with having pointless fights each episode (if the budget allowed that) and still be regarded as a fairly decent show. However, Rise doesn't do that, instead chooses to give its action scenes depth by putting thought into the personality of each character and implementing that into how each of them fights, showing the growth of the protagonists over the course of the show.
After rewatching the show multiple times (seriously, so many times) I began to notice patterns in many of the show's big fights, particularly in how the turtles and April fight and how they cooperate with each other as a team.
I thought it might be fun to categorize and examine how Leo, Raph, Mikey, Donnie, and April fight by breaking it down into their unique fighting styles, their roles and strengths in battle, how they apply those roles, and how all of these demonstrate different parts of their character.
BTW: There's a reason for the order in which I examine each character - it will all make sense by the last post. There's also a bit of a TL;DR at the end, but I encourage you read the full thing (or at least skim it)
~-~-~
Let's start with Leo.
Leonardo: The Strategist/Initiator
Leo was one of the easiest characters to analyze since a major focus of his character arc is the development of his fighting skills and his ability to cooperate with his team and act as a leader.
Fight Style:
Balanced/Well-rounded Fighter
Leo is the most balanced fighter on the team. He is a capable offensive and defensive fighter and has enough physical strength and acrobatics to handle many types of fighting styles. We see him fight everything from paper ninjas to the large Foot Brute and Draxum's hired goons (the dog guys) without seeming to be weak against one type of enemy. He may not necessarily be stronger than them but he is very versatile. However, this means that Leo doesn’t have a specific ability that makes him stand out in a fight (mystic and ninpo powers aside) the way his brothers do, and won’t have any inherent advantages that he can utilize when fighting a particular enemy.
Tumblr media
Strengths and Roles in a Fight:
The Strategist:
Leo’s role as the team’s strategist is pretty obvious. He may not be given the title of “Leader” until the end of season 2, but we see throughout the show that he is a very quick thinker and is skilled at coming up with clever and effective plans. Of course, each member of the Mad Dogs supplies ideas and plans, but Leo is especially good at developing and implementing them. The most obvious example of this is his fight in the Battle Nexus in 'Many Unhappy Returns, but there are other times when he is the one to put all the pieces together (think of the big attack against Draxum in the Shredder armor in 'End Game').'
Tumblr media
The Initiator:
Leo acts as the initiator in battle as he is either one of the first into battle or is the one to start a coordinated attack. This doesn't mean he necessarily has to attack first, but that he is usually the one to put the plan into action. This role relies the most on his mystic powers as his portal and teleportation powers give him the maneuverability needed to accommodate any plan. His abilities allow him to enter and disorient the enemy, or he can portal allies into the fight and create opportunities for a follow-up attack. This plays into his strengths as the Strategist as being the initiator can help him begin a strategic attack by maneuvering people or objects into their needed positions.
Tumblr media
Utility:
Leo’s skills truly shine in a fight against a few number of enemies as he can better focus his strategies on a specific enemy and direct the battle in his favor. With less pieces in play, he can properly utilize his mystic powers and act as the initiator instead of bouncing around a battle with no real objective in mind. It becomes easier to coordinate attacks with his brothers and allies since they don't have to spend time fighting different enemies.
However, in a fight with multiple enemies, Leo’s skills can be easily overlooked. Sure, he can direct the fight as the Strategist, but there’s only so much he can do in the middle of the chaos. His role as the initiator isn’t all that effective in a fight with many enemies as well as he and his brothers tend to just rush into battle in those situations. However, Leo’s balanced fighting style means he could theoretically go up against every type of enemy and won’t be at a noticeable disadvantage, which is very useful in a chaotic battle.
How it Plays into His Character:
Admittedly, the show is probably the most direct in using fights to show some of Leo's character traits, since so much of his arc is centered on his fighting and use of mystic powers. However, Rise does use this in enough interesting ways to make it worth mentioning.
While his role as the Strategist plays into Leo’s strengths as a character, it also highlights Leo’s problems with team communication. When Leo plans a strategy, he often fails to inform his allies of his plans, which can result in losing the battle or frustrating those around him. The show demonstrates this by having him make strategies in a fight but leaves his allies in the dark and confusing them. Leo does this, in part, to show off, but also because the plan simply makes sense in his head, so it would be easier for him to just do it instead of having to take the time to tell everybody his plan.
Tumblr media
The initiator is a good role for Leo’s powers and fighting style, but also feeds into his cockiness and overconfidence in a fight. Leo has a tendency to play the hero and either overestimate his abilities or underestimate his opponent. He may be the best fit for going first in a fight but Rise uses some fights to show how this can conflict with some of his character flaws. When he goes into battle first overconfident and cocky, it only conflicts with the team, but with his own role as the Strategist. He could, theoretically, bring his teammates into the fight after him, but if he thinks he has an easy win in front of him, all strategy goes out the window.
Tumblr media
His status as a balanced fighter and lack of specialization in battle is a likely source of some of Leo’s insecurities about his place in the group. We see in 'Portal Jacked!' how Leo doesn't feel like he has a proper role on the team - that he's just the face man - which is reinforced by the way he fights in comparison to his team. Leo is well suited to fight a wide range of enemies, but when his brothers have easily identifiable skills that can give them a distinct advantage, it becomes difficult to recognize the advantages he brings to the team as a well-rounded fighter.

Working as a Team:
As mentioned earlier, Leo's strengths as a fighter make him the one best suited for the first attack in a coordinated team strike as it highlights his skills as the Initiator and the Strategist. It shows how well he can fit those roles when he plays to his strengths and overcomes the character flaws that stand in his way. While the others do have skills that may allow them to start the first attack, Leo's abilities and strengths as a fighter give him (and his team) a much stronger advantage in this position.
Leo also does well when he goes second to last in a team attack, as he can finalize a strategy and prepare for a final blow by putting all the pieces into position. However, this is more situational as there are other characters just as well suited for that second-to-last position and can fill that role when Leo needs to be the one to start a team attack.
Leo’s fighting style, however, does make him a poor fit for a follow-up attack or the final attack in a fight. His balanced fighting style means he isn’t suited for a strong final attack. While he is technically fine acting as a follow-up attacker, it doesn’t really play into his strengths and isn’t that effective when fighting with others who are more suited to that role. His balanced fighting style also prevents him from effectively dealing that final blow to an enemy since he doesn't have a specialized strength in this regard. Again, he can do it, he just isn't well suited for it.
The way Rise develops and explores Leo's fight style demonstrates one of my favorite things the show does with his character (in fact, all of its characters). At first glance, he may seem pretty one-note and predictable, but as we go through the show, we see how both his character is actually more complex than we were first led to believe. The fights Leo participates in reflect that, as not only do his skills develop over the course of the show, but we begin to see how it all ties into his personality and growth as a character - making his fights more meaningful than what they may seem.

~-~-~
[Little bit of a TL;DR: Leo is the team's strategist and initiator in fights, supported by his balanced fight style and mystic powers. These roles play into his greatest strengths but they also expose some of his character flaws and insecurities. In team fights Leo is most effective as the first or second to last attacker but isn't well suited for a follow-up or final attack]
Thanks for bearing with me on this stupid long post. They're all going to be like this btw. Next up will be Raph. I plan to get that done and posted tomorrow.

MMA Fighter AU for @bobadinweek's bingo - with which I have a bingo! (I'll post my card under the read more cut for proof) I treated it more as a pose drawing exercise, but in the process I grew very fascinated with the idea of Boba having some biomech tattoos (as opposed to the geometrical armor based design I default to for Din) especially on the leg he is often headcanoned to lose to the sarlacc - and if you can make out anything of that on Boba it was inspired by Arno B Ink's work
Tumblr media
Whoop whoop! I've never achieved a bingo before!! I did a bit of colour coding, because that's how I work, and the blue ones needed to be switched up (the orange ones are the prompts I REALLY want to complete, and the yellow circles are the ones with the possibility of an idea.... So I'll want to go off these prompts outside of the deadline as well, I suppose. It'd be a shame to waste all those reference images I took for the Razor Crest Lives prompt XD). I've been aiming for the T-shaped bingo, but I don't have very high hopes with finishing anything for the FREE and Assassins & Spys prompts in the remaining time - gotta get back to work and all that....
I will make a round up post in two weeks with all my finished prompts all the same however many that will be - we shall see! :)

Im not sure what to categorize this as just a thought I had
So, so far I have read many headcanons/fanfictions e.t.c with many different looking mcs, like sometimes the mc is drop dead gorgeous, sometimes the mc is tall or short, skinny, chubby doesn't matter and I adore them everytime! but what I haven't been able to find so far in any sort of written media, and maybe that is because I haven't looked hard enough but anyway, is where the mc is just- average like, they don't have any special characteristics in their face or their body they aren't necessarily model tall or short, skinny or chubby they just look like they could be an npc in the background- you know one of the characters where once they enter a crowd of people you lose sight of them because of how ordinary of a face they have??? which may not sound too bad to some people but think about it- devildom consists or immortal beings that never age and could probably change their appearance whenever they wanted to, their beauty standards must be high af and especially with asmo being such a popular celebrity and one of the 7 lords- not to mentions that no matter what your type is you can't deny that everyone in the obey me cast is good looking, so when an average ncp looking mc just drops down in the devildom what happens??? What could the brothers reaction be??? What if sheep!mc gains their human form one day and they look nothing like the characters expected them??? also like what if devildom citizens reaction is like "THIS is the human that has the most powerful demons at the clutch of their hand???seriously??"
