MY SUPER MARIO MOVIE REVIEW (SPOILERS AHEAD)

Okay, so I have finally composed myself and I will say…man…the Mario movie was fun!

My overall review is its very funny, full of heart and the animation is gorgeous. There’s a lot of unexpected scenes that I found heartwarming and added to the characters/ plot.❤️

However…that being said…the pacing and script is my main concern. I know they have to fit a large chunk of lore for a good runtime, but there isn’t much development.

“But Moon, mario wasn’t all about story” I know, but a movie provides a chance to add story at a cinematic level.

Expanding the world and if not that the characters. If anything, I do not mind the simple plot. Mario needs to save Luigi and work alongside Princess Peach to defeat Bowser. Perfect.

However. I would have really liked more expanded characters. But I will elaborate below because that’s not my only critique.

Beyond here will be spoilers, read at your own risk!! My blog will start reposting/ talking about spoilers from here and now since it’s officially out!

CONS/ WHAT I WISH IT HAD MORE OF:

-I wish the bros got more screen time. Their chemistry and brotherly love was amazing, and I was itching to see more of them together.🥺

-that fight at the end with Bowser tho WAS EPIC! But Luigi was super underutilized omg… I really thought he was gonna have another role in the movie. I think they missed out on the side characters having more of a role or even a conversation…

-Speaking of which, idk, I found Lumalee kind of annoying. I know it’s probably going to set up a future movie…but I thought at least we would get some insight as to why the Luma was captured, why it hates living so much, idk….lol. But I did love the voice of Lumalee, super cute :)

-characterization. Apart from Mario and a LITTLE of luigi, and DK, the rest felt bland… I feel like bowser could have been more fleshed out (but don’t get me wrong, I loved how he had a crush on peach, his song and planned on marrying her. AHHH I LOVED IT) toad could have been more fleshed out. What are his goals at least? Not every character has to have an internal conflict, but he just felt…there. And what a shame because hes charming!

-okay guys, but peachs characterization. I’m sorry, this deserves its own post, so I will hyperlink it here when I finishing writing that, but omg yeah I am not quite attached to her portrayal yet😅 what a shame too because I love her so much…

-wish we spent some more time getting to know Mario’s family😭

-not a fleshed out ending. Hoped that peach would have reacted being on earth, maybe a montage of Brooklyn adjusting to having this pipe that leads to another world. What was the cities response overall when it came to cleanup? I know they have HAD to had some questions why a huge gorilla with a tie was there…and talking! Lol…

POSITIVES/ WHAT I FREAKIN LOVEDDDDD:

-Mario. Omg they freakin ACED Mario. His character flaws, his goals, aspirations, internal conflict, personality, everything I headcanoned/ hoped for. He’s a goofball who loves adventure, plumbing and loves his family. His determination, stubbornness, (RIZZ HE GOT THAT RIZZ!!!) and charm. Ugh. That affirms it. He’s my fav. I wanted to hug him through the screen many times SO BAD!!!🥺❤️

-luigi and Mario’s brotherly love/chemistry. Omg. The flashback of them as babies and when Mario was cupping Luigi’s face and almost crying out of relief. Like omg omg I’m so happy to that attention to detail😭🥺❤️ they love each other so much it’s just… *chefs kiss* I’m hoping for future movies we get more brotherly scenes, I’m still waiting for that piggyback ride🫶❤️

-baby peach. I just…I wasn’t expecting it. She was so cute and the fact that the toads just adopted her and raised her as their own tells goes sweet they are. 🥹 I’m so glad we got some of a backstory for her! But Omg…she was someone’s child then! :o I love lore…

-bowsers singing and the song peaches is a legit masterpiece. If my man don’t make a song like this and doesn’t sing it with that much enthusiasm I don’t want him!!😤😤😂💞but yep Jack black was awesome hehe he had me dying of laughter and he was super intimidating as Bowser!! He understood the assignment 💅🏼

-which reminds me. I love the plot of Bowser wanting to marry Peach and getting jealous of Mario. I wish we got Mario’s reaction of peach wearing the wedding dress tho I don’t think it really hit him that Bowser was trying to marry Peach…

- speaking of which…Mareach! We got a few cute scenes!! Nothing major, but I see that they are making it a slow burn romance 😏😂 okay, I can wait! While I wish we got more scenes, I loved how DK called out Mario’s attempts at flirting, Peach calling him adorable when he had his cat suit🥺🥺 and her giggles when Mario promises to buy her a pet turtle if she comes to Brooklyn. That was so freakin cute!!!❤️❤️🥹 you can tell Mario likes her, and peach has a fondness for him :)))

-CAT MARIO WAS SO ADORABLE DID YOU SEE WHEN HE BEAT DONKEY KONG HE WAS KNEEDING ON HIM LIKE A CAT WOULD AHHHHH-

-the animation and the storyboarding. Everything art related. The score. I wanted to fly when I heard bowsers theme. I wanted to cry seeing the beautifully crafted action scenes and I can’t wait to see the storyboards 😭❤️ illumination went all the way!!! Also the character design!!! I love all of their designs!!!

-the pop songs were a nice touch and the humor was great. :3

-SEEING MARIOS FAMILY AND THE FACT THAT CHARLES PLAYS THEIR DAD IS SO ADORABLE AND AWESOME I WAS FREAKIN FANGIRLING!!!

-also like I headcanoned THEIR MAMA IS SO ADORABLE I LOVE HER SO MUCH!!! No wonder they came out as sweet incredible boys 🥺🧡

-the soundtrack man. They were cooking up in the studio I’m telling you!!! I heard it’s on Spotify now so I’m gonna be listening to it lol

-luigi is so precious but I wish HE HAD MORE SCREENTIME

-DK and Mario’s relationship give me rowdy sibling vibes and I’m here for it

-I love how they can travel from Brooklyn to mushroom kingdom through the pipe, at first I thought it was a star VS the forces of evil thing and the worlds merged until I realized the ending… XD

-I loved all the voices!! I think everyone did an amazing job, I heard a few inconsistencies throughout the movie but meh, everyone seemed excited for their roles!!!🧡🫶

If I can think of anything else I will add, but yeah, I think I had higher expectations for the movie😅 I think if it had a bit more time to flesh out characters, it would have been SUPER great. I loved all the references inside the movie, you can tell it was crafted with passion and love❤️ it was a very fun experience and of course the BRAINROT increased💞

Of course, this is my personal opinions and such, if you have a different one, that's fine! This is just what I would liked to see/ what I thought would have been better in the movie. That’s all!! :3

He rlly flexing huh, yeah sure ur too HOT 🥵 omg she got a vision, LIKE HER MOM! Will this be a reoccurring theme with her? Oooo. OMG THAT FIRST KISS WAS SO SWEET WHEN IT SORT OF CAME FULL CIRCLE WITH YOONGI ASKING HER TO KISS HIM! SO fhdjsaf you're right on the money with Yoongi and MC not knowing how to communicate with each other for SHIT. Like I think they rely on telepathy or vibes too much, neither of them are mind readers... so much of their conflict these past two chapters could have been resolved if they just sat down and talked calmly about things for an hour or so!!! 💀BUT stop it right now Butterfly is one of my favorite BTS songs, so so gorgeous on the piano, and I could imagine a very similar melody that Yoongi would write for MC being something like that too. 🦋

HNNNNGGGFF Yoongi all sweaty on the court without his shirt.... damp long hair....teasing MC the whole way UGH I just know that I'd be drooling! 🥵And with that vision WHEW I'm so happy I could incorporate that into MC's character finally, I will say that this is something that will begin to happen more frequently for MC-- ever since she has been diving more into her spirituality and practices, her psychic abilities have been getting stronger.

The kiss. THE KISS!!! I'VE BEEN DYING TO WRITE SOME ROMANCE FOREVER NOW MY GOODNESS IT TOOK 13 CHAPTERS!! I just feel like Yoongi is such a 0 to 100 kind of guy when it comes to kisses, sweet and tender to begin with, then BAM super passionate and intense. I really really loved writing that scene, I'd say that Yoongi was truly desperate and yearning for MC for so long that he couldn't help but beg for more hnnnnngggg. But now they have to tip toe around for a little bit until they figure out how to tell the others, which turns into MORE yearning and AH I wanna chew on my drywall!!!! 👹

I wonder how MC is going to dodge Hoseok's questioning, and we don't know if he heard those two making out (he shouldn't have been able to, the music room is soundproofed...) or was perceptive to how weird MC and Yoongi were being with each other. I also feel like if Hoseok heard them, some of the others would as well, and I can think of a few (Namjoon, Tae, Seokjin for ex.) that would probably bust down that door!!! But also your theory of Hoseok possibly catching their kiss in the hallway is something that could have happened eeeee. Also I love teasing Hoseok as well he raises my blood pressure... poor MC can't even hide her heartrate from them!

UGH Jinnie's birthday he's such a sweet darling, I love that he was able to go out somewhere yummy to eat and spend time with everyone. I also really love when he feeds MC... it's so hot to me idk why like yes PLS grab my face and stare at me and treat me like a princess Jin!!! Always making sure she's warm, wanting to go to the cooking class with just her, and feeling truly at home with her and in their house I CAN'T He's just such a love. 😍

Tae baby... just like Jin, he knows where home is now and AH they're just all getting so close. You're so right, they really cherish her so so much. Tae and his photography too is so fun to write about, it's nice that he gets to express himself creatively and the other hybrids let him take their ID pictures was a sweet hidden moment that I'm happy you noticed!

Definitely more Jimin on the way!! It's been the Yoongi show for a bit, but that's just how I've planned these few chapters. Don't worry, each of them will get their turns to be the stars, which I'm super excited about in the future! Charmer Libra Jimin is my Roman Empire, totally more of a flirt and a romantic as time goes on. Joon UGH!! My little wolf, he's warmed up so much to MC, and he's very straightforward and stern like you said-- ever since the Incident, he seems to be very concerned about weather or not MC is feeling upset.

HA I love writing MC and Jeongguk's interactions, they're both such little shits and you can tell when they get on each other's nerves, but it's less antagonistic these days and more playful. He totally called her out for pouting, and while it might work for some of the others, it doesn't on him LOL. But she got him back with that kiss, huh? I bet she's been dying to do that for months...

I'm PSYCHED you mentioned Ben. He's my favorite side character to write, and it's nice that MC is able to confide in him about any of her worries. You're right, he totally caught onto her having crushes on all of them (it's probably dead obvious to him) But ahh it makes me so happy that you love him as well!! I agree, I'd probably act the same way towards MC if I were Ben-- teasing her but trying to encourage as well. 🫣

Happy holidays Alondra!!🎄❤️ It was a wonderful surprise seeing this Christmas oneshot for Nonviolent Communication!! I read part 7 recently so it was so cool seeing the callbacks to their first Christmas together and now this one, with all the progress they’ve both made since then 🥹 (I just realized that was the first time Miguel invited reader for dinner too!)!! Miguel is just so sweet!! the fact he wanted to cook and host everything!!! And the fact he’s a great cook- this man made so much food for reader and I love him for that (with the fact he loves seeing reader’s reaction to his cooking)!! I’m just imagining how happy he must’ve been cooking and preparing the food for reader 😭 oh and the little appearance with Lyla!! Always love how you write their banter even if it’s just a small part! and the Christmas card!! That was the one Sony made I think? yeah Miguel looked so done in that 😂 but the other Christmas card with reader- with the small smile at reader wait a second 👀 And the fact Miguel expresses his appreciation and care for reader through what he does for them, especially with it being hard to express out loud, is just so sweet 🥺 he’s really trying his best and he just cares for reader so much! I’ve loved reading every bit of progress Miguel has made in every part of NC, and the fact his dreams have gotten better, he just sleeps better now! (I’m still so happy reader was able it help him with that 🥹) the fact he dreams of Gabriella, Gabriel, and reader in his dreams!!! The fact he doesn’t feel heartache for the first time in years because he doesn’t feel alone anymore?!! 😭 I also think it’s so sweet he kept reader’s Christmas ornament from last year, and I’d really love to relax and design an ornament with Miguel, that sounds so fun (and Lyla roasting Miguel tho 😂)

Ok this whole part here: “The two of you stand there for a little while longer, admiring the Christmas tree, silently thinking about how much has changed in a year, and deciding that you wouldn’t change anything about it.” So much has happened between them, I can’t get over how their friendship has evolved so much and how much they’ve both grown in a year, their friendship really is so special, they deserve all the love!!! 🥹

reading about the other times they’ve had a bit more physical touch over the last few months!!! SCREAMING I’m so happy Miguel is more comfortable with it now, especially ever since he initiated that little pinky squeeze in part 11 (which I’m still not over) and the fact he does it again!!!

The whole Christmas show that was introduced in part 7 and then this part sounds so amazing to watch, the world building you add to Miguel’s universe is just so fun to read!!! can really imagine the Christmas show show going on! The little flashback to Gabriel and Miguel as children watching the show was so bittersweet. but I really do love the flashbacks you include of them with Miguel’s happy childhood memories. But when Spider-Man 2099 showed up in the show! And the fact the hologram gives reader a high five and a wink 😭😭 and Miguel blushes and thinks about it too 😭 this man- omg this this was so cute to read! And this leads me to the next part- the gift giving!!! The fact they were both hesitant at giving each other their gift 😭 (ok the fact they wrapped their gifts similarly too is so cute and I totally do the same thing!) and the gifts he gave reader!!! Every one of them is so sweet and the records 😭😭 the way I’d be smiling so much if I was there!! And reader’s gifts to him!?!! No that’s so, so sweet!!! gifting Miguel his own record player I can’t- it’s so perfect!! And the custom made mittens!! That’s so cute!! And gifting Miguel some record he liked from readers universe that he enjoys 😭😭 he felt tenura for reader again- I really I love this!!!! 😭❤️ (I saw your post with asking what to give Miguel and loved seeing all the sweet answers people put in- for some reason I had a hard time deciding!) Ok have to include this whole part: “He smiles softly at you, filled with ternura. Your gifts are so thoughtful and sweet, and the fact that you've paid attention to what records he enjoys when he’s mentioned it in passing, makes him feel heard, appreciated, and… loved” 😭😭❤️ YESS LET THIS MAN FEEL LOVED!!! I hope you had an amazing Christmas Alondra, thank you for writing this wonderful part for NC, especially with how busy it is and your migraine when writing this! I loved reading it so much, and I still love the other Christmas part you wrote too! Spent most of Christmas eve cooking with my mom and made Pancit Bihon (which is a Filipino noodle dish with different veggies and chicken or pork), cassava cake (made with shredded cassava and coconut and it’s really good!) and Pan de sal (like a Filipino bread roll) so it was so nice to unwind and read this!!! (Also gonna make some agua de Jamaica today!) I just have to say thank you again for writing Nonviolent communication, as it has truly become my favorite story to read this year. Thank you for everything Alondra, truly. I'm just glad I got it out on Christmas Eve and that we got cozy and soft NC Miguel! 🥺 Also, I did see your reblog of part 7!! I was working on the one-shot when I saw it, and I was like "hopefully she likes today's little one-shot!!" Also, the little callbacks to last year, yes!! It felt so bittersweet to bring up the differences. I'm glad I wrote this though because I can actually compare them from one Christmas to the other and their progress!! Lowkey crying over here!! Omg, Miguel cooking everything, wanting to host so reader doesn't have to worry about it, and trying to please her with his cooking - THIS MAN!!🥺😭 He's the sweetest!!! Lyla's appearance 💀 If I do more one-shots I'm going to try and include her more because it's so much fun to include the banter between Miguel and Lyla!! Yes, the Christmas card was the one Sony released! I couldn't help myself and created a little backstory for it to include in NC, haha!! It was just too cute not to! And the other Christmas card with Miguel staring at reader smiling...🥺👀 I just... yes. Miguel doing things to express how he feels !! He's trying his best and this is his way of doing it, which that alone is such a big step for him (I'm so proud of him 😭)! Also him having more pleasant dreams and dreaming of Gabriella, Gabriel, and now reader!! It's just another silent sign of how much reader means to Miguel (it highkey makes me wish reader could've met them - just imagine how cute it would be - I'm okay, really)! Miguel not feeling lonely nor feeling as much heartache - I made myself tear up with that one. I'm just so, so happy Miguel has reader in his life- that they both have each other, really - after being alone for so long. No, omg the ornament designing made me want to sit down and actually draw one. If I was in that dimension I would still go for a traditional tree because nothing beats decorating a tree physically (even if it means going up and down the ladder a million times 🤣) but I'd still get a holographic one to design ornaments, especially with Miguel! Also, Lyla's roasting had me laughing and Miguel's "You're so encouraging" - their banter is just so funny but yes, I LOVED including that little detail that he kept reader's ornament from last year. It's just.. a little something!

Omg that quote about them not changing anything! I wanted to highlight not only Miguel's progress but also reader's! The fact that they wouldn't change anything about it just shows how much better they're doing in their healing and I'm just so proud of them. They deserve to be happy and to feel loved! 🥹

The pinky squeeze and it happening three times over the months!!! I didn't want to give up too much in the Thanksgiving one-shot (I found out two days ago a drabble is less than 100 words, so I had to go back and change it 😓), so I just had to include the fact that Miguel has thought about physical touch more after some brushing of fingers here and there knowing that there has been some intentional touching on his part, hehe!! I'm just glad he's finding a way to build himself up to full physical touch and that he finds this little gesture comfortable to do!

Omg, thank you for the comment on the worldbuilding of Miguel's universe!! I have way too much fun thinking about these little details, sometimes even doing research (very important research, of course) to see if it fits or if it's something already in existence. It was just really fun and I loved including hologram Miguel this year, haha! I was just like - how can I make this year's show better? And then hologram Miguel came to mind! Omg, the little flashback with Gabriel - I was going to make it longer but I was writing that part on the 23rd and I still had the gift exchange moment plus helping with holiday cooking preparations, so I decided against it but I do love the little moment between them. I just love including Gabriel whenever I can!! I really hope we see him in BTSV!! But haha, back to hologram Miguel 🤭 him giving reader a high-five and a wink and Miguel just blushing about it - I have no regrets for making Miguel blush over this!! He's just too cute when he gets flustered !! The gift giving scene - I WAS LIKE AHHH??! I loved writing this part!! I wanted it to be this really soft and vulnerable yet big and significant moment between the two of them. As we've mentioned before, their thoughts and feelings aligned so much sometimes but they don't share or act on them because they're not ready to or don't want to push the other's boundaries but in this moment, they did it - they decided to go for it even through their shared hesitation! Them wrapping up their gifts similarly, I just love having them do similar things - maybe it's cliche but I have no regrets!! Also all their gifts to each other, I hoped it would be sweet!! My favorite thing was the record player and the mittens (I'm just imagining Miguel with them now and 🥺🥺), and Miguel just being so excited over them!! Them just giving each other's gifts that mean something to them - I'm gonna cry real quick don't mind me, please!! @sunsetdoodler that last quote you mentioned - I was laying in bed like -

"totally okay about this! So normal! Not gonna get emotional - nope, oh never mind.." because HE FEELS LOVED!!! I was just silently thinking of the line "to be loved is to be changed" and I - I'm just gonna leave it at that, I'm sorry!! But yes LET THIS MAN FEEL LOVED, HE DESERVES IT!!!

I’m sorry you had a bad day! Sending you hugs and kisses. My go to serotonin boost is that 2010 worlds interview where they’re in their farrucas costumes and T can’t stop giggling 🥰 she’s so cute because 95% of the time T is so poised and polished in interviews but if she gets hit with a Scott-induced giggle fit 😂 she’s hopeless and it’s adorable. And idk how to explain but Scott’s voice does something so cute the way he says “she’s so happy, she has the giggles.” Also they must’ve been so tired?? They were truly insane doing worlds right after they won gold at their first freakin Olympics. I love that pic of them on the worlds 2010 podium with T holding onto S with his arms wrapped around her, his head leaning against hers. They look like they could just fall asleep right there 🥺

That last bit: maybe THAT’s what he means when he says she’s often restless when she sleeps 😄🥲🥹

Also on that last bit YES I always feel like that in their hugs (The Hug™️or just any cuddles) and I feel weird saying that bc.. @ the crazies but it’s not in a sexual/romantic way it’s just that they truly are each other home and feel so safe they could legitimately loose consciousness and wake up in the same safe place they left 🥹 (kinda said something along the lines of that in this post from my bby blogging days).

Ahh that giggle moment at worlds is the cutest!! I also find the story behind it really funny: apparently he has a habit of picking up accents when they’re in other counties and he retells it that he was speaking kinda in an Italian accent.. which I don’t really hear.. he seams to just be speaking in his normal super lovely Canadian accent.. but as with many things them it must’ve been something so tiny and subtle that only T picked up on and that just sent her packing.. which tbh makes it even more endearing. And poor sweet T she was trying so hard to pull it together, not appear rude and he does such a good job of covering for her like saying ‘oh well I’m ready for tomorrow but T we’ll have to sort out’ and you just know after this whole thing they both cracked up into a fit of laughter (once they were out of the press area). I love this side of them- that silly best friend stuff and where they know eachother so well and the inside joke is so specific and they can tease each other in the most harmless way 💖

Later in that clip the interviewer asks them ‘who is your biggest competition’ and I have to say (while I’m sure all skaters/teams get asked it) it’s always really bothered me how they would be asked about their competitors.. like wtf this is VM’s interview. Completely off from the event we are talking about here but like their interview after winning 2017 worlds, how she asks about the 🇫🇷. WHY?? How rude to take the focus away from VM in their moment of glory to praise their competitors (which VM being so sportsman like and humble and nice to everyone would of course say great things- things the 🇫🇷 probably don’t deserve considering their lack of sportsmanship). It’s like a 1 min interview and they have to spend half of it talking about another team. I’ve seen quite a few instances of it happening with DW being the ‘other team’ but god it makes me mad..

Anyway..

Then on the podium it’s so clear how exhausted they were.. in the K+C almost non-responsive to the score and confirmation they had won their first worlds (which btw they were the only oly gold medalists to go on and win worlds the same year- Yuna was second and the pairs and mens winners weren’t there). Them ‘singing’ the anthem is kinda sad in contrasting it to singing it at the olys. There’s some commentary (somewhere) of the team Canada person at the time from worlds saying they aren’t sure if VM will continue- many teams/skaters after a success like this would cut their losses and hit the pro circuit. It’s odd to think there were people in team Canada so on the outskirts of what was really going on with VM.. but it also may have just been a non-answer answer as to not give people a narrative VM didn’t want out yet.. but as they’ve said it was clear they would continue.

Such a sweet moment encapsulating a momentous achievement- only the second Canadians to win ID worlds, and after they broke nearly every record under the sun. A moment on top of the world, embracing and just feeling so grateful, a moment of centring, feeling present, eyes closed to shut out the rest of the world. A silent “good job kiddo” from him probably, and T just feeling like she did it, she didn’t let him down, she’s still standing and is a world champion, for now at least.. everything was perfect.

And not to take anything away from this moment- their feels were completely validated, whether it was joy or exhaustion or anything else, but a few years later when she would burst into tears realising after winning a second world title thinking this wasn’t satisfying.. just propelling their journey even further..
