References in Path to Nowhere
And no I don’t mean the funny references like Joan has to Radiohead’s “Creep” or her reference to Nirvana, no—I mean the constant mythology and religion references I see around me when all I was trying to look for was fanfiction of Cinnabar. It seems like I find lore in the weirdest of ways possible. I have been noticing a pattern- with path to nowhere always going back to mythology and religion for their use of story telling and world building. Whether that be for the overarching plot or small details in characters.
I shall name each one I find in relations to each other.
Do note that this might contain some spoilers of the chapters.
1. Paradise, Purgatory, Inferno
One of the main themes I see repetition in this game is the use of Paradise, Purgatory, and Inferno. This brings me back to Dante’s Inferno; where our first note is that the circles of hell are direct copies to the “sins” sinners in the game commit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They are parallels to one another- as some characters commit acts that would go towards their character motive. To start with- why are they even considered sinners? Of course; they’ve committed “sins”, wrongdoings. But why not prisoners? As that’s what sort of happens once you find them- locked up in a high security place being monitored (although they would be considered having it better due to being allowed to go out as we see in activity checks and “security” in the base).
The most I can think about is the world here being compared to Paradise, Purgatory, and Inferno.to Inferno, the closest I can consider is the MBCC. Locking up sinners in one area? Sounds like the circles of hell. Purgatory is usually defined as a place between life and death, or for heaven and hell for some others. But what would be considered Paradise? Eastside is beautiful and is mostly safe, but it’s still prone to outbreaks and mania as we see in the Dreamy Bubble event. One place that is parallel to Paradise is Paradeisos.
Tumblr media
At the end of the current chapter for global; we see Langley talking about how she needed to get back to Paradeisos to file a report. It sounds very similar to Paradise, just enough for me to become curious.
And not only do we have that detail pertaining a place in relation to demonology; I saw an image from the Japanese account obviously showing Enfer, but something else as well.
Tumblr media
‘Belphegor’ is the name of a demon in demonology; Peter Binsfeld’s classifications of demons puts the demon Belphegor in a sloth- which while it isn’t a sin that is punished for in Inferno it is punished for in Purgatory in ‘Dante’s Purgatorio’.
2. Characters to Mythology
Characters also play a big role in this- as there is either references in their names, designs, or how they are in the story. While not a lot of characters have this type of reference the ones that do I find pretty interesting.
Cinnabar is one of the first ones I noticed; as me and my friend were gushing over her they noticed something written on her choker. That something being ‘Persephone’.
Tumblr media
Someone had an idea saying that from the others perspective, Cinnabar was essentially taken by the MBCC. Alyosha doesn’t like the fact that she is essentially confined there- where she doesn’t belong. Yet Cinnabar states that she doesn’t mind being there with the chief. Honestly this was really neat on the side of the design team.
EmpressThings on twitter had spoken on how Zoya is Fenrir, a wolf in Norse mythology. Stating that she had Norse runes on her arms, always had motifs with wolves (as even her surveillance order outfit had wolves in them). She was also shackled by the chief, which parallels the Norse mythology of Fenrir.
Delving on that more, an imagine blog expanded on the idea saying how Hecate is based off of the goddess Hecate who presided over spells and magic, which would make sense as her job is Arcane and her damage type is magical.
Tumblr media
That blog also mentions how Hella is closely named after the goddess of death in Norse mythology, Hel. Hel’s name could also be known as Hela from the glancing over google I did for this, and was given a nickname “The Two-Faced Terror” (if this is incorrect dont @ me). While not much about Hel and Hella are parallels to each other, the nickname could probably be one thing, as when we first meet her she acts sweet to be let out only to want us dead.
Tumblr media
And the last real obvious one; the Chief. Lucifer could be the best reference to this character. Lucifer is an angel that fell out of grace with heaven and became a fallen angel. In the very beginning of the game we see Suspect R wake up the Chief.
Tumblr media
The contrasting composition of this is the bed and the light blue. Like someone is dragging the Chief to hell by waking them (just my assumption), as at first we hear a nice lullaby and then to blaring alarms. This and also the way it’s known that the Chief has control over sinners with shackles. This plot point is a main driving factor in the whole story.
One last detail I noticed was the MBCC itself; Minos Bureau of Crisis Control.  Minos in mythology was made to judge over the dead in Hades. Or better yet in this game, MBCC watches over sinners.
That is all i’ve really found after my 4 hours of researching for this. The writers and designs for this game are on that good shit with how much detail is put into the world and characters.

SKZ: In Bed
Tumblr media
A shit show of a conversation was started in my writers club discord (Feel free to join!) with @maeleelee & @d4vekat-otp so here are my unhinged thoughts about how SKZ are in bed:
CHAN: SUB / SWITCH (SUB LEANING)
-He has so much control right now, even if it may not seem like it sometimes he just needs someone else to take control.
-Needs to be loved on and pampered, he's tired of taking care of his 7 kids all day
-Would love just being told what to do
-Seriously just tell him what to do, let him turn his brain off for once.
-SO SO SO in love with a calm, sweet, after care ritual:
- cuddling,
- kisses,
-a bath,
-snackies,
-hot chocolate,
- just be gentle with him after <3
MINHO: SOFT DOM
-Everyone imagines Lino as a hard dom. me included. based on his looks and demeanor but what if we based it off how he looks at Jisung?
-Suddenly the man is softer than SoonDoonDori
-Consent is sexy KING: asks if you're okay with everything he does
-SO SO SO passionate
-Gentle unless asked not to be
-Will bring the cats in after sex to let you cuddle up to them because he loves seeing his four babies all together.
-"want me to make you a snack?"
-SO MANY KISSES
-TIGHT cuddles, man will literally NOT let you go
-Would check in to make sure you're not hurt anywhere if he got 'too rough'
-Gives you his hoodie and sweats to sleep in
-HELPS YOU change into everything because "I'm changing the saying from No one helps you once you're fucked." (he's a lil dumb sometimes, he's doing his best okay?)
CHANGBIN: SWITCH (Depending on the day)
-Loves a good rough fuck
-but GOD WOULD HE LOVE being taken care of.
-Either manhandles you with his thicc muscles
- or pouts for you to be gentle with him
-IMMACULATE aftercare (HAVE YOU SEEN HOW SWEET HE IS WITH HIS MOM AND SISTER? HE WAS RAISED RIGHT AND KNOWS HOW TO TREAT A WOMAN)
-Massages!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-Bubble Baths <3
-Would CARRY you to the bath <3 (Even if you can still walk. he WILL carry you)
-HE PREPARES!!! Whether he assumes he's gonna get some, or not, hes ALWAYS prepared for what you'll need after just in case! (Like water and snacks, or advil) (he do get a little sleepy after sex please cuddle him)
-PRAISES THE FUCK OUT OF HIS PARTNER 100% SO SO SWEET. "You're doing so good," "You take me so well" JKBDSFJKBVSFKJBGSKJDFVBG
HYUNJIN: SERVICE TOP / SOFT DOM
-Soft boy, Shy when people compliment his looks BUT
-Behind closed doors, he KNOWS. He KNOWS hes hot. and uses it against you
-He's a slut (lovingly)
-LOVES roleplay LOVES being a character so he can forget he was shy earlier about receiving a compliment
-PRAISES YOU "you're so perfect." | "More beautiful than any art piece in any museum" | "Made just for me,"
-SENSUAL ASF
-He wants to be in control, but doesn't want to hurt you ever, only wants to make you feel good
-Will sketch you naked while you look fucked out (paint me like one of your french girls)
-The Most EXTREME Aftercare (it's such a long process)
-Will not let you lift a single finger, while he massages you, helps you bathe, puts lotion on you, gives you a face mask, changes you, and ultimately puts you to bed
-KISSES ALL OVER YOUR FACE before you fall asleep <3
JISUNG: SOFT DOM
-STOP DOING HANJI WRONG AND CALLING HIM BITCHLESS, WHO ARE WE KIDDING? HES NOT BITCHLESS AND WE ALL KNOW IT
-BIAS WRECKS EVERYONE EVERY SINGLE CB? EVEN IF JISUNG ISN'T YOUR BIAS... HE'S STILL YOUR BIAS.
-JISUNG MAY BE SHY BUT HE KNOWS WHAT HE'S DOING.
-LOVES EDGING. (Ignores us on bubble forever, knows we want him, knows EXACTLY when to drop content, and leave us begging him for more)
-HEAD GAME STRONG. PROVE ME WRONG RN.
-LOVES watching you beg for him. "I don't think you deserve it though-"
-WHORE (lovingly)
-WOULD SEXT YOU WHILE EITHER ONE OF YOU IS IN AN IMPORTANT MEETING "How bad do you want me right now?"
-AFTER CARE INCLUDES CUDDLES AND ANIME
-LIKE SO MUCH ANIME (FOKN WEEB)
-Showers TOGETHER. you're not allowed to go in there alone wtf??
FELIX: HARD DOM. / BRAT TAMER
-WHY EVERYONE THINK HES A SUB??
-HATES being seen as a pretty, fragile, princess
-NEEDS to take out his frustrations but what BETTER way than to show his partner whos in charge (Spoiler: It's Him.)
-The type to fuck you against the wall
-Seriously. He wants to pick you up and fuck you against any flat surface he can find- especially- when you piss him off.
-Leaves SO MANY marks on you. "Everyone needs to know who you belong to."
-LOVES face fucking. L O V E S it
-PRAISES YOU (if you deserve it) "Just like that, you're doing so good"
-IF YOU DONT DESERVE IT THO: "Stupid little whore, forgot whos in charge again huh?" (NOT HAPPY. STILL SO HOT OF HIM THO)
-SWEET BABY DURING AFTERCARE, WHOLE 180 CHANGE, "Baby what do you need?" "are you ok my love?" "Thank you for letting me get my anger out..." SO SO SO SO SO SOFT
SEUNGMIN: HARD DOM. FULL ON SADIST.
-Man isn't just a dom. He's a mother fucking SADIST
-Teases you until you cry
-LOVES making you angry/frustrated
-LOVES watching you fight back (like the brat you are)
-LOVES it more to see you lose the fight (Source: Trust me bro)
-TOYS TOYS TOYS.
-LOVES Using toys to overstimulate you.
-THE TYPE TO DO GUIDED MASTRUBATION
-LOVES the power he has over you!!!!!!!!!

-JEALOUS FUCKING. "so you wanna act up in front of other guys? REMEMBER who fucking OWNS you."
-AFTERCARE IS SO NICE WITH HIM THO. HES A TOTAL PUPPY. Following you around to make sure you're okay, like a dog with its tail between its legs he needs lots of attention, cuddles and kisses. He loves you SO Much, he can't help his jealousy issues...

An essay on Furiosa, the politics of the Wasteland, Arthurian literature and realistic vs. formalistic CGI
Tumblr media
Mad Max: Fury Road absolutely enraptured me when it came out nearly a decade ago, and I will cop to seeing it four times at the theatre. For me (and many others who saw the light of George Miller) it set new standards for action filmmaking, storytelling and worldbuilding, and I could pop in its Blu Ray at any time and never get tired of it. Perhaps not surprisingly, I was deeply apprehensive about the announced prequel for Fury Road's actual main character, Furiosa, even if Miller was still writing and directing. We didn't need backstory for Furiosa—hell, Fury Road is told in such a way that NOTHING in it requires explicit backstory. And since it focuses on the Yung Furiosa, it meant Charlize Theron couldn't return with another career-defining performance. Plus, look at all that CGI in the trailer, it can't be as good as Fury Road.
Turns out I was silly to doubt George Miller, M.D., A.O., writer and director of Babe: Pig in the City and Happy Feet One & Two.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is excellent, and I needn't have worried about it not being as good as Fury Road because it is not remotely trying to be Fury Road. Fury Road is a lean, mean machine with no fat on it, nothing extraneous, operating with constant forward momentum and only occasionally letting up to let you breathe a little; Furiosa is a classical epic, sprawling in scope, scale and structure, and more than happy to let the audience simmer in a quiet, almost painfully still moment. If its opening spoken word sequence by that Gandalf of the Wastes himself, the First History Man, didn't already clue you in, it unfolds like something out of myth, a tale told over and over again and whose possible embellishments are called attention to in the dialogue itself. Where Fury Road scratched the action nerd itch in my head like you wouldn't believe, Furiosa was the equivalent of Miller giving the undulating folds of my English major brain a deep tissue massage. That's great! I, for one, love when sequels/prequels endeavour to be fundamentally different movies from what they're succeeding/preceding, operating in different modes, formats and even genres, and more filmmakers should aim for it when building on an existing series.
This movie has been on my mind so much in the past week that I've ended up dedicating several cognitive processes to keeping track of all of the different ponderings it's spawned. Thankfully, Furiosa is divided into chapters (fun fact: putting chapter cards in your movie is a quick way to my heart), so it only seems fitting that I break up all of these cascading thoughts accordingly.
1. The Pole of Inaccessibility
Tumblr media
Furiosa herself actually isn't the protagonist for the first chapter of her own movie, instead occupying the role of a (very crafty and resourceful) damsel in distress for those initial 30-40 minutes. The real hero of the opening act, which plays out like a game of cat and mouse, is Furiosa's mother Mary Jabassa, who rides out into the wasteland first on horseback and then astride a motorcycle to track down the band of raiders that has stolen away her daughter. Mary's brought to life by Miller and Nico Lathouris' economical writing and a magnetic performance by newcomer Charlee Fraser, who radiates so much screen presence in such relatively little time and with one of those instant "who is SHE??" faces. She doesn't have many lines, but who needs them when Fraser can convey volumes about Mary with just a flash of her eyes or the effortless way she swaps out one of her motorcycle's wheels for another. To be quite candid, I'm not sure of the last time I fell in love with a character so quickly.
You notice a neat aesthetic contrast between mother and daughter in retrospect: Mary Jabassa darts into the desert barefoot, clad in a simple yet elegant dress, her wolf cut immaculate, only briefly disguising herself with the ugly armour of a raider she just sniped, and when she attacks it's almost with grace, like some Greek goddess set loose in the post-apocalyptic Aussie outback with just her wits and a bolt-action rifle; we track Furiosa's growth over the years by how much of her initially conventional beauty she has shed, quite literally in one case (hair buzzed, severed arm augmented with a chunky mechanical prosthesis, smeared in grease and dirt from head to toe, growling her lines at a lower octave), and by how she loses her mother's graceful approach to movement and violence, eventually carrying herself like a blunt instrument. Yet I have zero doubt the former raised the latter, both angels of different feathers but with the same steel and resolve. Of fucking course this woman is Furiosa's mother, and in the short time we know her we quickly understand exactly why Furiosa has the drive and morals she does without needing to resort to didactic exposition.
Anyway, I was tearing up by the end of the first chapter. Great start!
2. Lessons from the Wasteland
Tumblr media
Most movies—most stories, really—don't actually tell the entire narrative from A to Z. Perhaps the real meat of the thing is found from H to T, and A-G or U-Z are unnecessary for conveying the key narrative and themes. So many prequels fail by insisting on telling the A-G part of the story, explaining how the hero earned a certain nickname or met their memorable sidekick—but if that stuff was actually interesting, they likely would have included it in the original work. The greatest thing a prequel can actually do is recontextualize, putting iconic characters or moments in a new light, allowing you to appreciate them from a different angle. All of season 2 of Fargo serves to explain why Molly Solverson's dad is appropriately wary when Lorne Malvo enters his diner for a SINGLE SCENE in the show's first season. David's arc from the Alien prequels Prometheus and Covenant—polarizing as those entries are—adds another layer to why Ash is so protective of the creature in the first movie. Andor gives you a sense of what it's like for a normal, non-Jedi person to live under the boot of the Empire and why so many of them would join up with the Rebel Alliance—or why they would desire to wear that boot, or even just crave the chance to lick it.
Furiosa is one of those rare great prequels because it makes us take a step back and consider the established world with a little more nuance, even if it's still all so absurd. In Fury Road, Immortan Joe is an awesome, endlessly quotable villain, completely irredeemable, and basically a cartoon. He works perfectly as the antagonist of that breakneck, Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote-ass movie, but if you step outside of its adrenaline-pumping narrative for even a moment you risk questioning why nobody in the Citadel or its surrounding settlements has risen up against him before. Hell, why would Furiosa even work for him to begin with? But then you see Dementus and company tear-assing around the wasteland, seizing settlements and running them into the ground, and you realize Joe and his consortium offer something that Dementus reasonably can't: stability—granted, an unwavering, unchangeable stability weighted in favour of Joe's own brutal caste system, but stability nonetheless. It really makes you wonder, how badly does a guy have to suck to make IMMORTAN JOE of all people look like a sane, competent and reasonable ruler by comparison?!?
…and then they open the door to the vault where he keeps his wives, and in a flash you're reminded just how awful Joe is and why Furiosa will risk her life to help some of these women flee from him years later. This new context enriches Joe and makes it more believable that he could maintain power for so long, but it doesn't make him any less of a monster, and it says a lot about Furiosa's hate for Dementus that she could grit her teeth and work for this sick old tyrant.
3. The Stowaway
Tumblr media
Here's another wild bit of trivia about this movie: you don't actually see top-billed actress Anya Taylor-Joy pop up on screen until roughly halfway through, once Furiosa is in her late teens/early twenties. Up until this point she's been played by Alyla Browne, who through the use of some seamless and honestly really impressive CGI has been given Anya's distinctive bug eyes [complimentary]. It's one of those bold choices that really works because Miller commits to it so hard, though it does make me wish Browne's name was up on the poster next to Taylor-Joy's.
Speaking of CGI, I should talk about what seems to be a sticking point for quite a few people: if there's been one consistent criticism of Furiosa so far, it's that it doesn't look nearly as practical or grounded as Fury Road, with more obvious greenscreen and compositing, and what previously would've been physical stunt performers and pyrotechnics have been replaced with their digital equivalents for many shots. Simply put, it doesn't look as real! For a lot of people, that practicality was one of Fury Road's primary draws, so I won't try to quibble if they're let down by Furiosa's overt artificiality, but to be honest I'm actually quite fine with it. It helps that this visual discrepancy doesn't sneak up on you but is incredibly apparent right from the aerial zoom-down into Australia in the very first scene, so I didn't feel misled or duped.
Fury Road never asks you to suspend your disbelief because it all looks so believable; Furiosa jovially prods you to suspend that disbelief from the get-go and tune into it on a different wavelength. It's a classical epic, and like the classical epics of the 1950s and 60s it has a lot of actors standing in front of what clearly are matte paintings. It feels right! We're not watching fact, we're watching myth. I'm willing to concede there might be a little bit of post-hoc rationalization on my part because I simply love this movie so much, but I'm not holding the effects in Furiosa to the same standard as those in Fury Road because I simply don't believe Miller and his crew are attempting to replicate that approach. Without the extensive CGI, we don't get that impressive long, panning take where a stranded Furiosa scans the empty, dust-and-sun-scoured wasteland (75% Sergio Leone, 25% Andrei Tarkovsky), or the Octoboss and his parasailing goons. For the sake of intellectual exercise I did try imagining them filming the Octoboss/war rig sequence with the same immersive practical approach they used for Fury Road's stunts, however I just kept picturing dead stunt performers, so perhaps the tradeoff was worth it!
4. Homeward
Tumblr media
Around the same time we meet the Taylor-Joy-pilled Furiosa in Chapter 3, we're introduced to Praetorian Jack, the chief driver for the convoys running between the Citadel and its allied settlements. Jack's played by Tom Burke, who pulled off a very good Orson Welles in Mank! and who I should really check out in The Souvenir one of these days. He's also a cool dude! Here are some facts about Praetorian Jack:
He's decked out in road leathers with a pauldron stitched to one shoulder
He's stoic and wary, but still more or less personable and can carry on a conversation
Professes to a certain cynicism, to quote Special Agent Albert Rosenfield, but ultimately has a capacity for kindness and will do the right thing
Shoots a gun real good
Can drive like nobody's business
So in other words, Jack is Mad Max. But also, no, he clearly isn't! He looks and dresses like Mad Max (particularly Mel Gibson's) and does a lot of the same things "Mad" Max Rockatansky does, but he's also very explicitly a distinct character. It's a choice that seems inexplicable and perhaps even lazy on its face, except this is a George Miller movie, so of course this parallel is extremely purposeful. Miller has gone on record saying he avoids any kind of strict chronology or continuity for his Mad Max movies, compared to the rigid canons for Star Trek and Star Wars, and bless him for doing so. It's more fun viewing each Mad Max entry as a new revision or elaboration on a story being told again and again generations after the fall, mutating in style, structure and focus with every iteration, becoming less grounded as its core narrative is passed from elder to youth, community to community, genre to genre, until it becomes myth. (At least, my English major brain thinks it's more fun.) In fact there's actually something Arthurian to it, where at first King Arthur was mentioned in several Welsh legends before Geoffrey of Monmouth crafted an actual narrative around him, then Chrétien de Troyes added elements like Lancelot and infused the stories with more romance, and then with Le Morte d'Arthur Thomas Malory whipped the whole cycle together into one volume, which T.H. White would chop and screw and deconstruct with The Once and Future King centuries later.
All this to say: maybe Praetorian Jack looks and sounds and acts like Max because he sorta kinda basically is, being just one of many men driving back and forth across the wasteland, lending a hand on occasion, who'll be conflated into a single, legendary "Mad Max" at some point down the line in a different History Man's retelling of Furiosa's odyssey. Sometimes that Max rips across the desert in his V8 Interceptor, other times driving a big rig. Perhaps there's a dog tagging along and/or a scraggly and at first aggravating ally played by Bruce Spence or Nicholas Hoult. Usually he has a shotgun. But so long as you aren't trying to kill him, he'll help you out.
5. Beyond Vengeance
Tumblr media
The Mad Max movies have incredibly iconic villains—Immortan Joe! Toecutter! the Lord Humongous!—but they are exactly that, capital V Villains devoid of humanizing qualities who you can't wait to watch bad things happen to. Furiosa appears to continue this trend by giving us a villain who in fact has a mustache long enough that he could reasonably twirl it if he so wanted, but ironically Dementus ends up being the most layered antagonist in the entire series, even moreso than the late Tina Turner's comparatively benevolent Aunty Entity from Beyond Thunderdome. And because he's played by Chris Hemsworth, whose comedic delivery rivals his stupidly handsome looks, you lock in every time he's on screen.
Something so fascinating about Dementus is that, for a main antagonist, he's NOT all-powerful, and in fact quite the opposite: he's more conman than warlord, looking for the next hustle, the next gullible crowd he can preach to and dupe—though never for long. For all his bluster, at every turn he finds himself in way over his head and writing cheques he can't cash, and this self-induced Sisyphean torment makes him riveting to watch. You're tempted to pity Dementus but it's also quite difficult to spare sympathy for someone who's so quick to channel their rage and hurt and ego into thoughtless, burn-it-all-down destruction. When you're not laughing at him, you're hating his guts, and it's indisputably the best work of Chris Hemsworth's career.
It's in this final chapter that everything naturally comes to a head: Furiosa's final evolution into the character we meet at the start of Fury Road, the predictable toppling of Dementus' precariously built house of cards, and the mythmaking that has been teased since the very first scene becoming diagetic text, the last of which allows the movie to thoroughly explore the themes of vengeance it's been building to. A brief war begins, is summarized and is over in the span of roughly a minute, and on its face it's a baffling narrative choice that most other filmmakers would have botched. But our man Miller's smart enough to recognize that the result of this war is the most foregone of conclusions if you've been paying even the slightest bit of attention, so he effectively brushes past it to get to the emotional heart of the climax and an incredible "Oh shit!" payoff that cements Miller as one of mainstream cinema's greatest sickos.
Tumblr media
Fury Road remains the greatest Mad Max film, but Furiosa might be the best thing George Miller has ever made. If not his magnum opus, it does at least feel like his dissertation, and it makes me wish Warner Bros. puts enough trust in him despite Furiosa's poor box office performance that he's able to make The Wasteland. Absolutely ridiculous that a man just short of his 80th birthday was able to pull this off, and with it I feel confident calling him one of my favourite directors.

When I look at the names of the characters the writers of Slow Damage pay attention to the characters they are writing, they put so much into the characters including their names.
I know I did posts about them before but looking at them the names that the writers choose match their characters too well.
Towa’s real name “Haruto” notes how Maya views her son, as a toy to mold and customize to her liking.
her fake name "Maya" notes Maya’s god complex that she exhibits in the game. Maya in religion is considered the holy mother since Maya is the one who gave birth to Buddha hence she is the holy mother the equivalent of the Virgin Mary.
Maya views herself as a god and has delusions of grandeur and followers that support that idea which is shown in the name.
Fujieda’s surname means “Wisteria branches” Wisteria flower trees are known to be powerful and strong and can withstand any harsh weather This references how Fujieda steels himself for trail and trabulation to climb out of the hell hole. Also, fujieda’s armor conveys someone perfect and immaculate like a strong tree completely perfect and unmovable. the way that the branches of Wisteria droop represent weeping can infer how Fujieda lived a tragic fraught with pain.
It might reference his armor and having a fake name that matches it but also the tree symbolizes resilience to live despite the pain which matches Fujieda well in the game.
His real surname Yuzuki comes from Yuzu a type of citrus fruit, Yuzu tastes bitter and sour this references the pain in Fujieda's past.
They are also fruits that are healthy and promote well-being, Fujieda in contrast Towa lives a healthier lifestyle and has a much better mind space. But it can reference to how he helps Towa with his healing process from his past.
the color of Yuzu yellow means happiness and positivity this can Fujieda to become a happier person due to his affection for Towa.

Frog Detective!!!! I absolutely love this game and I highly recommend watching Snapcube play. The voice acting is immaculate and made the whole game funnier than it already is. I cannot recommend this game enough.
Here's Snapcube's video!!
Writing typed below!
Rating: 9.0 Watched: Su 2023 -> Snapcube Favorite? Y Replayable? Y Recommend? Y
Comments:
Games 1-3 on Midnight Snap
Snapcube's Voice Acting is so good I decided to watch instead of play
books have no place in society
love the dialogue and characters they're so weird
ground pie T^T
what was that weird thing Snap saw??
oh no I think that little creature stole the notebook
omg the crab and shrimp band I love
love the wizard outfit and disappearing poof
i love the cowboy poem
FROG ON A SCOOTER
not the actual haunted photo
HAT STEW I AM LITERALLY JOKING LOL
I am so obsessed with the art style
omg love the gay chemistry between Frog Detective and Sherman
THE EYEBROWS
They're so mean about his head shape
oh no is this a setup?
one year in the bad room???
The T^T CREDITS
MYSTERY MONKEY
MAGICAL GIRL MONKEY
LOVE THE ENDING AND CREDITS
love the creator interrupting the dialogue for questionable morals
Game dev notes
love the polygonal modeling and character designs
short stories - mostly fetch quests (fun since the dialogue is ?? (idk what i wrote here oops)
a 3d point and click mystery
silly achievements with breaking physics
I loved watching these games SO much. Not only were the games themselves so fun and charming, but the voice acting was superb and fit the characters so well. I can't imagine playing without the VA lol. The character models were super cute and very well done, each animal was designed to be very recognizable while also having a ton of personality. The dialogue is honestly my favorite dialogue of any game, It's so witty and silly and goofy and charming omg the writers deserve an award. It just fits with contemporary humor so well in the best possible way. The plots were also unique and fun. Crime doesn't exist so the mysteries were so creative like an invisible wizard. It's a shame no more frog detective games will be made but they ended the trilogy on a great note. I will have to follow the dev team to see if there are any plans for other games bc I would love to play or watch more!! A highly recommended game, def also a game to relax to and watch midnight snap's video on. Love you Frog Detective <3<3

If you like grouchy witches and wayward little trans girls with magic,
If you're interested in robots discovering personhood and adults coming to term with their own lives,
If you're delighted by frogs that can cook and demon children with immaculate drip,
If you want to see a story that's a mirror for who you could be,
If you yearn for a story that will fill your heart and feed your soul,
If transformation, community, found family, and building adventures big and small is something you crave, check out Yazeba's Bed & Breakfast. I had the pleasure of writing for this incredible game, and I'm delighted to say it's been released.
Tumblr media
I was the main character writer for the robot housemaid Amelie, who's still discovering who it/he/she is, and one of my favorite chapters that I wrote was THE WITCH'S OLD HOSTEL, which is a dungeon crawl that touches on some very frightening things indeed: our imagination, and our history.
There are ways to play online with One More Multiverse, and physical books and tat to enhance your experience! Whether you're a tired angel, a prissy cat, an anxious robot housekeeper, a soggy businessman, a massive mountain troll, a sapient shrub, or something else entirely, you're bound to find a story to tell in Yazeba's Bed & Breakfast.
Tumblr media
All you have to do is open the book.

The Nancy Drew fandom is so talented. There are so many intelligent theorists, amazing writers, creative artists, and soulful people. I figured I would show some of my favorite fic works, I had to limit it to one per author because Tumblr only allows 10 links per post.
@likestosolvethepuzzle wrote this. I feel like that's all I need to say tbh. Not enough adjectives to describe it!
A Nace Summer Camp AU that will blow your socks off. When you're done praising it in the comments you can help me convince @hucklebucket to unretire.
A sequel to The Space Between that you can read by itself, one of the tags is "Did I mention Ace wears a tux." Which is all you need to know.
This is how I wish Season 3 would've gone. @stuckonaglacierwithmacgyver is basically the opposite of Steve Harrington in Stranger Things 3. She's 3/3 Popeye!
Nancy gets blackmailed by a Hilltopper and Ace gets possessive (in an endearing way, not a douchebag way). LavenderDandelionCrown doesn't miss.
Nancy and Ace haven't seen each other in 10 years, and then get snowed in. The tension is peak. Excellent stuff from Server Mother
My favorite person in the world wrote this for me for Secret Sleuth. Beautiful is the word I would use to describe it. @timandlucy does not miss. Period
An amazing immaculate sweet season 4 alternative from the fiend known as @reviewdiaries
Two very different but equally amazing memory fics from two amazing and talented writers.
I'm also throwing out an honorable mention to an upcoming Selkie fic that I know is gonna be a masterpiece. 👀👀👀👀👀👀

chronicangelca: What are your controversial Stardew opinions?
I think the game loop is immaculate and the presentation is great and it's a very worthy successor to Harvest Moon.
I cannot fucking stand the writing. To me, it's like a tripod missing a leg, how bad the writing in SDV is. I deeply, desperately wish CA actually collaborated with someone and hired a writer, because if the writing in SDV was anything above mediocre, it'd be one of my all time favorites.
But this game is so good in other regards, it makes the repetitiveness and lack of flavor to the text really starkly stand out. These games are meant to be played for tens of and hundreds of hours. That length really makes it obvious how weak the characters and writing are.
I think there needs to be, no joke, about 5 or 6 times more incidental dialogue, and every character needs to have at least two dimensions, because they sure as shit aren't three dimensional.
And like, yes, using mods to add new characters helps, and I have seen a lot of good ones, but I always chafe against the idea of leaving it up to fans to fix the weaknesses of a game.
there you have it, that's my unpopular SDV opinion

I’ve already exhausted the ears of anyone who listens to me with rambles of Touchstarved—and I fear if I bring it up again to them I’ll be taken to the gallows
So I’m taking my ranting to the actual fandom and in hopes I’ll be quiet after I actually type out my thoughts <33
SO
Buckle up I’ve got a lot to say
First tho: these rambles do have some spoilers for The Arcana and Last Legacy and of course— the demo for Touchstarved so bE WARNED
Ahem ahem
Ramble number 1 🤺
First off- IM JUST SO GENERALLY HYPED FOR THE FULL STORY
Like I love romance and all— BUT THE ACTUAL PLOT??
It’s just so intriguing to me
I’m so excited to see what the full on plot is going to be—
Like take The Arcana and Last Legacy for example
Us, as MC, are a magician’s apprentice with years of lost memories, tasked with the responsibility of solving the dead count’s death. Doing so in the timeframe of a masquerade that the Devil arcana crashes, presenting his idea of merging realms—with him as ruler.
Then in Last Legacy
We’re a human from earth that gets transported to a recovering magical world that was only a game back home. Come to find out an old evil is slowly resurfacing—
LIKE BOTH ARE SO COOL
So what is the full story of Touchstarved gonna be? ?
I’m assuming it’s a longer game than the previously mentioned, so I just- GAHHHHH
I can’t wait
I also wonder how much of a center piece Touchstarved MC is gonna be
Like what is gonna be our role? Why are we important to the overall plot of the entire game?
We already know why we’re important to our own story—duh. UHH lemme articulate this-
Like MC’s story is clear in the demo, we’re cursed with hands that corrupts whoever we touch—and we’ve come to the dangerous city of Eridia to find a cure. But I can’t WAIT to find out how that ties in with everything else.
Like how does our curse connect us to the LIs? To Eridia? To everything?
How much of a role does MC really play?
Like in Arcana, we aren’t just the one given the job of solving a murder, but we’re also the one with powers that can rival the Devil’s. We’re the Fool Tarot card—the start of the journey.
And in Last Legacy we’re not just the human from earth brought into an unfamiliar world, but also the human that wields a relic that once belonged to the LI’s ‘dead’ friend/captain. (A relic that is later vital in saving the world)
So I’m just— I’m so excited to see why Touchstarved MC is connected to everything. What decisions we’ll be able to make, and why those decisions will lead to either a happy or horrific ending.
I already love these writers—and I love the characters, and I already love the glimpses we have of the start of the plot.
Like the vibe and plot of the story is what really got me INTO touchstarved. (That and the characters are uhhh rlly pretty 👉👈 AND THE ANIMATED INTRO WAS IMMACULATE)
I’m just so hyped to see what the story is—and how the routes are going to end. Will it truly be happy? Will we actually end it by saving whatever evil is corrupting the world? Or will it be a bittersweet end, where it’s only happy because MC and whatever LI they picked—survived and get to be together?
Like we’ll probably solve things- but I just wonder how bittersweet and still tragic the writers will make it—like what if to gain one character’s salvation, we have to doom another? I think I read somewhere where the Devs said our choice of LI will result in consequences for another— AND I THINK THATS JUST SO
Muah muah
My heart will utterly break
Anyway—I’m just really excited for Touchstarved plot—can’t wait, mentally pained that it’s going to be like waiting for my sailor husband to return from sea. but I have faith it’ll be worth it- especially with how much love has already been put into it.
ALR
NOW UNTO RAMBLE 2
Ramble 2 😙
SO SO SO, now unto the romance hype
I’m vry excited for what the romance is gonna be like. Like, I’ve played a few of these games before. Mainly Arcana, Last Legacy, Mystic Messenger, etc.
And usually the romance starts pretty quick, (mainly due to these games being a bit shorter.)
But I wonder how fast or slow the romances are going to be in Touchstarved. Like, Mc is already pretty quickly attracted to the main cast(valid) but I wonder if some routes are going to be quicker than others?
And what are the CONFESSIONS going to be like?
I wonder if some routes will be slower or quicker than others?
Like my personal guesses for the quickest to slowest romance kinda goes like this: Leander, Ais, Kuras, Mhin, Vere
Okie Okie lemme explain my reasonings (I just like to ramble)
Leander feels like the type of character (if he’s not actually just using Mc) that clings, then obsesses over people he likes. And I can picture his romance starting pretty quick— I think the slower bit will be tied to actually getting him to be vulnerable—
Ais is already canon to get attached. So I can see his romance being a bit quicker.
It’s not like I think Kuras’ romance will be quick, but I do think it’ll be possibly quicker than Mhin’s. (Mainly for the scene where he keeps a hold on you when you trip. Especially if you pick ‘Can you step out?’ At the start.)
I am very curious how he’s gonna be in love though- it’s oddly hard for me to picture
Now Mhin—i can picture theirs being slower because they don’t just not want YOU to get hurt, but THEY don’t want to get hurt either.
And now Vere—I can see the physical parts of the romance being able to happen pretty quickly—but for Vere to actually like—develop sincere feelings? That’ll definitely take longer.
I can’t wait for it to happen tho
I also can’t wait for ✨feelings✨ to make drama. Like, what will the Senobium do when/if they find out Vere has like—genuinely fallen for someone 🧍🏻‍♀️ will they use us as leverage?
Will Kuras’ feelings for us make salvation harder to get?
IDKDBDBDNDND I JUST LIKE DRAMA
Alr Alr Alr- I’ll stop there.
HOPEFULLY, this will help me be quiet— because bro i’ve been thinking of Touchstarved nonstop for ages now 😭 my friends can’t take it anymore
Anyway, if you read all that, thank u <3 I hope you enjoyed my nonsensical ramblings.
I hope you have a vry good day, wear ur favorite shirt, smell a rose, and see a butterfly !!

MAAAARIIIIII
I need your help.
Ok so, How to write?
I told you that I write, right? Well actually I didn't write them properly. I wrote them in screenplay format.. Now I want to write them properly but I don't know how 😭😭 my mind is blank.. Even when I manage to think up on how to write, it's so shit.. I have so many ideas but I have no clue on how the heck am I supposes to put them out.. Do you have any advice? How do you usually write? Please help.
*casually implodes* alright. Okay. Excellent.
This just might be the best ask I’ve ever received. I’ve always wanted to teach others how to write, I’m really passionate about writing stuff, and I’m majoring in education in university rn, so I sure hope I can answer this well lmao
But, nevertheless, I finally have the opportunity:
✨ Mari’s Writing Crash Course that I may or may not have composed while tipsy: a short guide to novel formatting ✨
There’s only, truly, three factors that are the most noticeably important: Formatting, Dialogue and Writing Voice.
You said you’ve been writing in screenplay format? Immaculate. You’re already halfway there. If you know how to write ANYTHING (short stories, novels, screenplays) you already- hopefully- understand the basis of composing stories. Character arcs, plot lines, worldbuilding, etc. I’m not getting into ANY of that, bc your ask referred to formatting and formatting only. I gotcha luv.
The Step One: The Key to Novel Formatting
You’ve already written in screenplay format before. That’s great. You’re already, like, more than halfway there. I’ve tried screenplaying before, but I never got that far in. Not my best medium.
I’m assuming what you’ve worked on before looks like this (format wise, not content wise lmao)
Tumblr media
Caps lock indication, space down, and dialogue.
Well here’s the neat thing: novel writing, while very different from screenplays, is much closer to screenplays with more detail:
Tumblr media
Caps lock indication, italicized setup, space down, and dialogue.
OTHER THAN describing the camera angles, this has very similar content to a novel: describing portions (sometimes equal portions, usually not) of both dialogue and descriptions.
So! Remove the caps lock indication on who’s speaking, make that italicized setup into the flow of a paragraph, remove all the stuff on camera angles, and put that dialogue under quotation marks.
Now it looks like this:
Tumblr media
OH WOW! IT LOOKS LIKE A NOVEL NOW!!
Don’t overthink it: you just take your same thoughts from your screenplay format, and then… transfer it. Piece of cake 🍰
The sub-category of Part One; Part One Extended I guess: Present or Past Tense
What tense do you want your novel to be written in? Present tense? Past tense?
I used to say, “ ALL books are written in past tense. Because as the reader, we’re looking into a story that has already been written. If a book is in present tense, that means the story is unfolding, that means the author is writing it while we’re reading it, and that’s impossible since we’re holding the copy of the book in our hands. NO books should be written in present tense 😡👎”
And then I opened up The Hunger Games and saw it was in present tense.
So it looks like I’m just wildly wrong about that.
I will say tho, most books are written in past tense. And that might, or might not, be more comfortable for the reader and writer. However, it is up you. Contrary to my former opinion, there is no right or wrong tense for your book to be in.
Here is a visual guide:
Tumblr media
Once you pick one, though, stick with it. Jumping between past and present these, UNLESS it’s for any stylistic choice (character’s flashbacks, time travelling, etc.) will most likely be awkward to read.
The Step Two: The Importance of properly formatting dialogue
Quotation marks go THROUGHOUT a sentence.
“Why don’t you guys go look at my taco salad post” and “she said” is all ONE BIG SENTENCE.
“Why don’t you guys go look at my taco salad post.” She said. ❌
“Why don’t you guys go look at my taco salad post,” she said. ✅
Each dialogue before the end of the sentence completes with a comma instead of a period. Exclamation marks and question marks can be used in whatever dialogue format, since they’re tone indicators. There aren’t strict rules for tone indicators.
Commas and periods aren’t really tone indicators, so there’s a quick key on how to write that stuff:
Remember, if dialogue ends with a “she said” “she exclaimed” “she spoke” etc. etc. etc. it’ll be part of the same sentence. But, if dialogue ends with an action “she walked to the door” “she took a forkful of that taco salad” etc. etc. etc. it’ll be an entirely new sentence.
THIS is what it looks like:
Tumblr media
Also, not every set of dialogue needs to have an end quote to it. This is what that looks like:
Tumblr media
I mean, you could but brackets in dialogue. But I just want to warn you: I read a book like that, can’t recall the author’s name, and it distracted me greatly from the characters, plot, atmosphere, etc. I’d stay away from that.
The Step Three: The Writing Voice
So what is narrative voice, anyways?
Tumblr media
This is essentially how you form your entire story. The tone, emotion, and descriptions of your story.
I know, I know, the idea that every single word you use reveals your writing style might sound daunting, but trust me, writing voice comes naturally. As long as you let it come naturally.
Essentially: people who know you really well, your closest friends and family, who recognize your quirks, your colloquialisms, and your speech patterns, will most likely recognize your writing style. Because it will sound like you.
And that’s all writing voice is. Your own style. Even this answer I typed out for your ask, it’s in my writing style. It’s in my voice. It’s a blend of eloquent words, long sentences, and a dash of humour here and there. My novel, albeit sounding obviously much different than me making a post on tumblr, also sounds like this. To an extent.
You write like how you speak, even if you’re writing from a specific character’s perspective.
An example is Rick Riordan’s writing sounds wildly different from Becky Chamber’s writing. Even though they’re both talented and hard working, excellent writers. Every book looks different Every book sounds different. Every book feels different.
So, how do you find your own writing style?
Of course, a published novel of yours will sound different than your personal diary. But, those differences aside, they both have your voice. So let yourself speak, let yourself write.
Your story is going directly from your brain, to your laptop screen, or pen and paper, or whatever. Let yourself get into it. Sometimes I read what I’m writing out loud. Sometimes I don’t. Do not overthink your writing voice, or try to force your novel to sound more formal, or more casual, or more poetic, or more or less descriptive, or more wordy. Just let it be.
The more you write, and the more drafts you create, you’ll find your writing voice without even needing to search around for it.
There is a website called, I Write Like This. You can copy and paste passages of your writing, a few hundred words at a time if you want, and it’ll analyze your flow of descriptions, dialogue, punctuation, and match it up with whatever famous author your voice sounds similar to.
I copy and pasted my entire second chapter, a few thousand words, and this is my badge:
Tumblr media
My writing voice is similar to our beloved @neil-gaiman . Of course, our writing voice is not identical, as no two authors ever are, but the flow of the writing, the mood, the tone, the energy… it’s a little bit on the same page.
The bonus step four: write shit 💩
You said you write shit?
Good.
Write shit.
This is odd advice to give, I know. But when I say write shit, I mean as a start.
If you had sent an ask saying, “I’ve NEVER touched a pen, paper, or laptop in my life, I don’t know how to write!!” I’d be… daunted. Not an impossible task, but a daunting one. Just slightly harder to get into, slightly harder to give advice for.
I’d much rather you write like shit than not write at all. The hierarchy goes like this:
Good writing >>> shit writing >>> not writing at all.
I can’t remember where I heard this from, but to quote, “you can edit a poorly written page, but you can’t edit a blank page”.
So go, my lovely Sana. Be free. Write all the shit in the world. Fill up your pages. Get writers cramp. Get writers block. Recover from writers block. Make typos. Make messes. Write glorious, delicious, silly, stupid, and beautiful things. Your first draft is not supposed to be perfect. The time will come for pristine, polished, ready-to-be-published writing, and you do not need to rush into there. At all.
Write shit 💩 New-writing is the most necessary shit in this world.

🥤 🥑 🎨 ❄ for the writer truth or dare, please!!
🥤: Recommend an author or fan fic you love. Dude that's HARD. My first instincts, however, are @musewrangler's works-- but especially "Brothers In Arms". That's a CLASSIC-- and @jessicas-pi's Time Heals series. All her stuff is fantastic but I have a soft spot for Time Heals, since it was the first thing of hers I read. Also, I love it. Minor detail. OH and since I just reread it I'm gonna shout out "So This Crazy Thing Happened At The Terra Bella Mountain Lodge" by my beloved @hecckyeah, one of the greatest crossover fan fics in all the galaxy!
🥑: You accidentally killed someone, which mutual(s) do you text for help? Based on proximity, you. Based on who might be good at that, still you, and... my gut says @singswan-springswan, and I don't know why (please know I mean this as a compliment)
🎨: Link your favorite piece of fanart and explain why you like it. Girl. Your hubris. You know I would link all your art ever if I could. But since I cannot, technically-- it depends on the fandom! This, for instance, is my favorite Queen's Thief fanart, because the COLOR and the VIBES and that scene is IMMACULATE. My favorite Wingfeather Saga fan art is this one, because Shadowblade and the Florid Sword are my beloveds! This Lucy Chen art of yours lives rent free, obviously, and I love this screencap redraw from SWR and this Chenford art and and this STUNNINGLY detailed dragon you did and this Daredevil art always makes me laugh so so hard, and this Kanera art-
❄: What's your dream theme/plot for a fic, and who would write it best? Answered here!
Truth or dare writing ask game!!

Yeah alright let’s talk Tarkir
Getting this out of the way: I do not care about Alesha, so if you were coming here ready to hear anything about the first-ever transgender girl out of Magic*, sorry to disappoint.
Actually, yeah, I’m gonna talk about this for a little bit. I understand Alesha means a lot to some people, and I’m not saying they’re wrong to feel that way. I’m sure there are people who had to fight to make Alesha openly & canonically trans, and I’m not saying that this was meaningless, wasted effort. It’s nice to be able to point to someone and say, see, there’s a place for people like me here. I was excited about it at the time and I wasn’t even into Magic back then.
But like c’mon, y’all, she’s not really a character, right? She gets one story, the thrust of which is, “this character is trans, and that’s basically fine.” Alesha exists to be part of the banner image of the internal WotC LGBT employees’ monthly newsletter. She exists to be the discord avatar for every third trans girl into Magic. She exists so a massive corporation can point to her as evidence that they care in some nebulous way about trans people, and she costs slightly less than paying someone to, say, actually moderate the hate speech comments on their vids of Autumn Burchett’s pro tour games.
All of which is to say, they don’t actually care. You know this. Individual staff, writers, artists - sure, but they’re not the ones who make the final decisions. And you and I deserve better from our stories, and we’re never going to get that from fucking Hasbro, right?
So here’s my pitch: seek out actual queer stories, and I’m not talking about contemporary YA shit with a marketing budget. For readers of this specific blog I’d recommend looking up “Attack Helicopter” by Isabel Fall (you should still be able to find it online). Stories where the texture and structure of thought are queer and trans are revelatory. You don’t need to beg for crumbs from a megacorp’s table.
ANYWAY, COMMA,
welcome to Tarkir! There used to not be dragons here, but now there are. In either timeline, everyone is locked in a brutal, unending struggle of clan-against-clan, so thanks, Sarkhan? Yeah, no, I hear you, it’s definitely different now. Yeah, and better. Yeah, because of the...yeah, because there’s dragons now, right. No, you did great, buddy. You really, uh, made a difference.
JESUS, IS HE CRYING? GET ME OUT OF HERE PLEASE

Monastery Swiftspear (art by Steve Argyle)
I’ve come to think of the current era of MtG art (let’s arbitrarily say from Kaladesh block to the present) as the “Magali Villeneuve era”, and if I’m being totally honest, I kind of hate it. Everything is technically competent, clearly lit, and immaculately detailed. Everyone has amazing cheekbones. It is so, so boring. I’m not at all saying she’s a bad artist! Sometimes, as with Kaldheim, she is very nearly the only person in a set making good art. I’ve featured her work on here many, many times.
What I am saying is that her work always has this, like, objectivity to it that feels detached and even alienating, like we’re looking at these characters through a powerful telescope. There’s no stylization, and dare I say no style.
The reason I bring her up in a set in which I will not be reviewing her work (sorry, Narset fans), is that Steve Argyle makes for an interesting comparison. They are to my untrained eye very similar artists: the sharp linework, the combination of dynamics and detachment. The major difference is that Steve’s art is substantially hornier and substantially male-gazier.
And goddammit, at least that’s something.
I HAVE THIS OPINION BECAUSE I’M A BAD FEMINIST. AND I DESERVE TO BE PUNISHED ABOUT IT
Tumblr media
Unyielding Krumar (art by Viktor Titov)
I’m not sure why Viktor made this orc look like a ripped lizard man. None of the other orcs in this block look like this. Maybe he thought “krumar” was a species of lizard folk, when in point of fact a krumar is, checks notes, an orphan of the Mardu raised by the Abzan who killed their parents in a twist of worldbuilding regrettably reminiscent of a strategy used in real-world genocides. Whoops!
Anyway, big arms. Lizard person. Sorry about your family.
WIZARDS STAY CLASSY I GUESS
Tumblr media
Ire Shaman (art by Jack Wang)
Yeah, see, extremely not a lizard.
We’re not going to talk about armor practicality because that is very much beside the point, but we were all thinking it, and I want to acknowledge that before moving onto saying nice things about what all the leather bands are doing for her arms, and what this lamellar bustier is doing for her tits.
YEAH I KNOW WHAT LAMELLAR IS. PRETTY HOT, RIGHT
Tumblr media
Den Protector (art by Viktor Titov)
I am not immune to mothers, nor women in furs, and I’m especially not immune to women with big two-handed weapons (in either sense, I suppose.) I really like the sense of motion in this picture, and the dynamic thrust of the landscape behind her, and... hm. Is her right-hand grip reversed from what it should be? Dammit, that’s going to bother me.
I LIKE MY WOMEN TO HAVE BETTER GRIP TECHNIQUE IS ALL I’M SAYING
Tumblr media
Wandering Champion (art by Willian Murai)
I am trying really, really hard not to date myself by a reference to a shitty 20-year-old flash animation. Anyway! she has flexibility, power, and isn’t afraid of a little viscera now and again. All excellent qualities.
I AM HONESTLY EXERCISING IMMENSE SELF-RESTRAINT HERE
Tumblr media
Sultai Flayer (art by Izzy)
Sorry, do you not want a forty-foot androgyne snake person to remove your skin with tender, agonizing slowness? Are you lost?
WHY DON’T YOU MARRY YOUR SKIN IF YOU’RE SO GODDAMN ATTACHED TO IT. PUSSY.
Tumblr media
Highspire Mantis (art by Igor Kieryluk)
I did the mantis bit in my Battle for Zendikar post, but I thought I’d actually dig into what the appeal is here: raptorial forelimbs. The inescapable, serrated hold of something that could slice you open as easy as thinking, but hasn’t yet. The smoothness of chitin, hard without being inflexible. The many strange articulations. And then either you make out or it eats your head, and it is not up to you which.
WHEN WILL WIZARDS GIVE US THE MANTIS-FUCKER REPRESENTATION WE DESERVE. ROSEWATER’S SILENCE ON THIS ISSUE IS DEAFENING.
Alright, that’s Tarkir down! Who knows what’s next? Probably a very cranky explanation of what fiction is and why it’s okay to like fictional bad guys (it’s because they’re not real.) At first I thought that was going to be a more interesting topic, but the more I think about it the more it seems like it’s...really not. I can have fun with it, though! Thanks for reading, and I’ll see y’all next time.

Devlog #8: QA and Q&A
Tumblr media
(all the screenshots i have left are spoilers. while i take more, have a meme)
Hello everyone! Welcome to this month’s devlog!
If you just stumbled upon this, I am Adrienne, also known as insertdisc5! I’m the developer, writer, artist, main programmer, etc of the game. The game being In Stars and Time, which is the next and final game in the START AGAIN series, following START AGAIN: a prologue (available here!).  You can find out more about In Stars and Time here!!!
LET’S GET TO IT
With the game’s alpha finished, I didn’t do anything much worth talking about this month. QA is underway! I’m fixing bugs! I’m writing changelogs that say stuff like “At the hallway before that one room, getting to the edge 2+ times wont softlock anymore if you do it between the wall and a column”!!!! I’m also resting because September was a LOT!!!
So, since I have very little to say, I asked people on Twitter to ask me questions, so I could answer them. Q&A time!
@ItsMeLilyV asks:
1. I really have been in love with monochrome & limited palette styles recently :3 How did you figure out the art style for ISAT? Are there any distinct challenges or walls you've run into?
2. did you get to take any good naps. how would you rank the naps on a 10-pt scale
1. The TLDR is: it’s more fun to draw in black and white. And it’s faster. And it looks cool as hell!!!
I did run into some challenges especially when it came to UI- how do you draw the eye of the player to a selection, or something they need to interact with, when you can’t use an eye-catching color to draw them in?!? I ended up relying a lot on level design to do that… And animations, too, especially in the House where everything is frozen! Keeping a very limited palette also helps, I think I mostly used black, white, and maybe 5 shades of grey in between… It’s all about contrast! And not having a big muddy grey mess!!!
2. I got some good naps in, yeah. I’m a big fan of naps after lunch, so I eat, wait for the sleep to kick in, and sleep for 2-3 hours. Solid 8/10 naps. That’s heaven babes!!!
@gertritude asks:
I am curious about what your writing process is for the game!! Like, what is your planning process (if you have one) and how do you approach actually writing for it?
My writing process… It’s a little all over the place to be honest!
I had the big strokes of ISAT figured out from beginning to end before I even finished the prologue, but then I had to really sit down a bunch of times and really figure out how to get from point A to point B. So it involved a lot of writing, and also rewriting, to Foreshadow some Cool Stuff. Also, early on I was really struggling with some plot points, so I sat down for a whole day and wrote down the entire plot from beginning to end, and tried to get really granular and write down those middle point A to point B things! If I didn’t know what would happen I just invented something on the spot! As long as the whole story was written!!! It took a while, but I’m really glad I did this, because this saved me a lot of time later on hehe
Apart from the big plot events, the smaller events that are conversations between the characters usually just come out of nowhere, like “ok I have a table here and I put cookies on it. How would everyone react?”. I try to strike a balance between “this is how people talk” and “does it say anything new about those characters”, whether it’s a character’s favorite food, or a nice foreshadowing moment that you’ll reread later and go “OH DAMN… ALL ALONG THIS WAS HERE…”
My big go-to technique to actually write is that every day 1. I decide I’m going to work for 15mn and I start a timer 2. I put my headphones on 3. I start my concentrate playlist, which is full of instrumental electro/dubstep/wub wub adjacent music 4. ????? 5. Writing accomplished. The 15mn goal is just because it’s easy to write for 15mn. I always write for longer, but I just need to get started with an easy goal!
@_blade0fgrass_ asks:
Is it hard coming up with such immaculate puns
I would like to thank punpedia from the bottom of my heart. And also google. Thanks punpedia thanks google!
@kayleighdotjpeg asks:
keeping spoilers in mind, who are your favorite characters to write? which character dynamics are your favorite? did any of them surprise you?
This is THE question. Thank you so much.
I loved to write Siffrin (especially when they’re all depressed teehee), but Odile ended up being my Actual Favorite to write. Most characters are either 1. Full of secrets or 2. Pushovers and/or oblivious, so it’s very nice to have Odile be the one to say “Alright, enough of this. We will talk about the elephant in the room Right Now”. She’s very blunt and doesn’t care about anything and she is so useful as a plot device and I love her.
Siffrin and Odile is my favorite dynamic, followed closely by Siffrin and Loop! As for surprising character dynamics, I reaaaaally enjoyed writing Odile and Isabeau… I didn’t get to write them often, but they are so fun to write together. Please ask me this question again once the game comes out so I can say more.
@novvclutchmate asks:
How do you go about finding a balance between levity and seriousness? Would you say your story tips more in one direction than the other; if so, was it on purpose and why?
What a good question! Hmm, for me and my writing style personally, it’s less about finding a balance, and more that One Cannot Exist Without The Other. It’s like adding sweetness to a savory dish- adding them together elevates the whole thing!!!
If I have a serious scene, I like to add some levity to kind of bring the characters back to earth. I don’t know about you, but when I have a serious conversation for too long, I automatically laugh or tell a joke to break the tension! I get uncomfortable when it’s too serious! It’s normal! I’m normal!!!! It’s also a way for the audience to breathe out- don’t worry player, we’re good! We’re back to the usual stuff! Plus, I find that funny scenes right after a serious emotional scene hit harder.
As for seriousness to levity, I think it’s fun when you have a funny slice of life scene and then the story reminds you that this scene is Serious Actually. Like having everyone talking happily and the narrator saying  “it makes you sad when your friends keep repeating the very same lines every time.” :)
ISAT tips more towards levity I’d say, because of the reasons listed above! If you’re used to funny cute scenes and then I give you a Serious Emotional scene it makes you go Σ(っ °Д °;)っ
@gala_ksyz
is there any words youd like to tell aspiring/young indie devs?
Just make the dang thing!!! Stop putting it off!!! Just do it!!! Buy a simple game maker thing like rpgmaker or renpy or whatever and make the thing!!! Yes it’ll take time!!! Yes it won’t be as good as you imagined in some ways!!! Yes making games is hard!!! But you gotta just do it!!! It’ll be so much better than you imagined in other ways!!! It’ll be real!!! You’re the only one who can make it!!! It’s yours!!! It comes from your heart!!! It IS your heart!!! No one else can make it but you!!! So just make the dang thing!!! I believe in you!!! JUST MAKE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That’s all I have to say for today! Let me know if you have any questions, or if there’s any aspect of the game development struggle you’d like me to talk about! See you next time!!!
AND DON’T FORGET TO WISHLIST THE GAME ON STEAM ALSO IT REALLY HELPS BECAUSE STEAM’S ALGORITHM IS MORE LIKELY TO SHOW OFF GAMES WITH A HIGH AMOUNT OF WISHLISTS THAT’S THE REASON WHY GAME DEVS ALWAYS ASK TO WISHLIST!!! OKAY BYE!!!!

20 Questions for Fic Writers Game | thank you for the tag @jo-harrington!
1) How many works do you have on A03? - 11
2) What's your total AO3 word count? - 521k+
3) What fandoms do you write for? - currently stranger things, but i used to write for naruto too.
4) What are your top five fics by kudos? - the "yes" policy, i tripped and fell in love with you, one of us has got to change, temptations too sweet to resist, once upon a coronation.
5) Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? - yes! all of them: ao3, tumblr, wattpad, ffnet. the only exception is if someone comments *way* long after the chapter is out and i see the notification while in bed but by the time i've done my morning routine, i've forgotten to reply. 💀
6) What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? - wish you were here in it's unfinished state, probably. for finished fics, there's a blurb for obito where he catches feelings and it ends messily.
7) What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? - i'm a sap, so all my endings are cheesy lovefests tbh.
8) Do you get hate on fics? - nope!
9) Do you write smut? If so, what kinds? - yes. slowly. it's my least fav to write, but also most important to me as a romance writer to include and have it be meaningful. it's usually soft, with lots of feelings. and way too much description.
10) Do you write crossovers? -nah.
11) Have you ever had a fic stolen? - lol yeah.
12) Have you ever had a fic translated? - not that i know of!
13) Have you ever co-written a fic before? - nope. not my thing. i don't get along well with others.
14) What's your all time favorite ship? - me and the fictional boy i have a crush on.
15) What's a WIP that you want to finish, but doubt you ever will? - the vampire!eddie / bed and breakfast / beauty and the beast / romcom + enemies to lovers wip. i add details here and there, but who knows if i'll actually write it all out like it is in my head.
16) What are your writing strengths? - no idea, really.
17) What are your writing weaknesses? - perfectionism paralysis. it leads to beautiful paragraphs, but a single paragraph will take me upwards of ten hours to get juust right, and then i wake up the next day and think of a different punctuation structure that works better, and then after publishing i realize it would've made more sense if i remembered other vocabulary word and used it in a sentence instead, and now all my big brain writer friends who write immaculate 5k+ chapters in a single day are cringing at my word choice and judging me.
18) Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? - translations at the end of the chapter are nice, but hopefully it should have enough context around it that i can guess/assume what it means. that is to say, i don't have strong feelings one way or the other if it's included or not!
19) First fandom you wrote for? - yu-gi-oh or naruto.
20) Favorite fic you've written? - the "yes" policy.
