Season 2 may have had it's faults
But it did answer the most important unsolved mystery of season 1
How many people does five have to kill to get a decent cup of coffee?
Everyone in the entire world by indirectly sparking an apocalypse.
All of humanity.
But at least he found his decent cup of coffee.

The Umbrellas — Fairweather Friend (Slumberland)
Tumblr media
The Umbrellas’ second album opens with a shimmer of cymbal, a bobbling pogo stick of bass, a jagged slash of guitar, hitting harder from the get-go than in the dream-poppy self-titled. Two distinct personalities emerge from songs which alternate lead singers. “Three Cheers,” and indeed, all the cuts lead sung by Matt Ferrara, leans hard into Postcard Records/C86-ish pop. Here especially, Ferrara’s scrappy heartfelt vocals give off a good whiff of Orange Juice’s Edwyn Collins, and his dueling, scrabbling guitar jangle with Morgan Stanley evokes harder, more angular bands of the era, like Fire Engines.
Then, when Stanley takes the mic, the sonics turn softer and more expansive. In careening “Goodbye,” she starts the verse against the dry tinder of drumming (that’s Keith Frerichs), the playful hop of bass (Nik Oka) then twirls and swirls in giddy “bah bah bahs” at the chorus. Her songs have the barbed sweetness of the Aislers Set and Camera Obscura.
The two switch off, both between and within songs, and some of the best cuts are the ones where they both sing. “Gone” jangles dizzily around Ferrara’s rough, pitchy romanticism, while Stanley volleys in angelic, perfect descants in a dream-scented soprano.
The Umbrella’s debut was a pleasure, but Fairweather Friend aims at deeper feelings, sharper guitar play and more rambunctious rhythms. The closing “PM” feels like it’s going to be an introspective ending, as liquid, lyrical guitars crisscross and Ferrara channels hurt and confusion. But it kicks up in a surprising way, ratcheting up the power chords, rumbling up some drums, and inviting Stanley in from the wings to lead feathery layers of melodic ecstasy. The Umbrellas have always offered bashed up, joyriding sweetness, but here they reach at—and intermittently attain—a Spector-esque wall of rock ‘n roll sound. Even better, that larger scale doesn’t undermine the vulnerability of their songs, but instead amplifies and clarifies it.

MWW Artwork of the Day (3/19/23) Marie Bracquemond (French, 1840–1916) The Umbrellas (c. 1880-85) Black chalk, graphite, gouache & ink on paper, 55.8 x 38.7 cm. Musée d'Orsay, Paris
"The Umbrellas" is one of Bracquemond's most successful etchings, clearly demonstrating her skill at drawing as well as at conceiving of successful compositions that exploited the range of gray tones that etching could produce. Here a young woman attempts to sell flowers to a well-to-do, top-hatted gentlemen who apparently scurries past her in an attempt to escape the rain and wind, which is described by the light diagonal lines sweeping across the image. He holds onto his hat and the viewer is left to wonder why he hasn't raised his umbrella like the other pedestrians in the image. The lively composition pulls the viewer in, past the fleeing man to the cluster of umbrellas, up the stairs, and into the excitement of the modern city.

10/31/23.
I really liked The Umbrellas (San Francisco, California) debut LP in 2021 on Slumberland, but if "Three Cheers!" is a true indication of what their new album, "Fairweather Friend" sounds like then I will give a genuine "Hip, Hip, Hoorah"!
The Bandcamp write up says, "Channeling sold gold influences like The Pastels, Comet Gain, Orange Juice and The Aislers Set, The Umbrellas represent the fertile San Francisco Bay Area scene’s at its most pop-tastic." Before I read that, I immediately thought of older Pastels and Orange Juice. Their earlier work does have a decidely Aislers Set feel.
Slumberland is putting this out. I know we posted about the band lightheaded a while back, but give it another listen. I did a couple of days ago and enjoyed it more this time around.

three cheers!, the umbrellas (2023).
bay area jangle pop wizards the umbrellas return with another c86-inspired pop tune. at three minutes, it's satisfyingly catchy and and well-produced. matt ferrera's voice rumbles just like collins/pastel and the song's galloping drums and frenetic guitar agree. indiepop's inherently reiterative nature is best reflected here in what is very clearly a great tune that declines to reinvent the wheel. with how tempered it is, i wonder if the group has more energy hidden away. could i be wishing for a song as enormous and theatrical as 'therese'? of course. but i feel i'll be as happy as i can be if the 'paint a rainbow' sound of 'write it in the sky' is present on their upcoming album. i wouldn't mind if it were a bit noisier, too.

Monday is fine
[continua]
