Top 20 RotE characters!
My final piece of ranking for this series!
There will be some spoilers in this!
20. Nettle
- If there’s one thing I love, it’s difficult women. Nettle is as harsh as her name suggests. I love young Nettle with her dream magic and how completely kind she is to Thick. And I love older Nettle, who doesn’t mind hurting Fitz’s feeling for Bee’s benefit. She is unforgiving and always strives to do what she thinks is best - even if she doesn’t always know what’s best.
19. Thymara
- Definitely my favourite Rain Wild character. She had my favourite POV in those books as well. I liked how her story paralleled Sintara’s, with her dragon features becoming more beautiful, getting her wings, and her determination to be her own woman. I didn’t love that she ended up with Tats and ended up having a kid with him, but again, it mirrored Sintara’s mating with Mercor.
18. Starling Birdsong
- are we seeing a theme? Starling is so great because she simply does not care if people like her personality. She’s beautiful, she’s talented, and she got her song. The way she destroyed Fitz in Golden Fool was a peak moment in this series. And something i love so much is that no matter how much Fitz complains about her or thinks she’s annoying, he can’t help but like her.
17. Chade Fallstar
- I hate him, I love him, he’s the worst, he’s the best. I’ve said this before - I have complicated feelings about Chade but regardless, they are strong feelings. Ngl, I misjudged his age and thought he was about 80 in the first book so when he made it to the last book?? Incredible. His death got me in a way that I really didn’t expect it to.
16. Dutiful Farseer
- My boy! He had some great development from the most fifteen year old boy ever, to a genuinely good king. I loved his dynamic with Fitz in Fool's Errand. It was really on sight with those two and it was entertaining the entire time.
15. Selden Vestrit
- I saw someone say once that Selden felt like a random npc who managed to get a nat20 on charisma. He's great in Ship of Destiny, and fantastic in the Rain Wild Chronicles. His bond with Chassim was unexpected but so so lovely.
14. Molly Chandler
- I understand why people don't like her. Her character gets in the way of Fitzloved. Soz guys, but I've seen too many female characters get hate because fans were rooting for a mlm ship. Don't get me wrong, its frustrating but Molly never inserts herself in Fitz's life. It the other way around. I think people don't like her less because of who she is and more because of what she represents. She's a simple life, and is the face of Fitz's delusion. But I love her. She's down to earth, she's rough around the edges, she's a simple gal who wants a simple life.
13. Etta
- Etta!!! From a Divvytown prostitute to Queen of the Pirate Isles??? Insane, incredible, showstopping. One thing that I absolutely love about her that I think is overlooked is that, despite how much Kennit was pushing for it and how much Wintrow was pining for her, it did not even cross her mind to get with this 15 year old boy. Kennit is all like 'teach the boys your… skills.' and she's like, ah yes, I will teach him how to use knives. Queen behaviour.
12. Paragon
- Everyone's favourite murderous boat! His dynamic with Amber is great, and his friendship with Brashen is really underrated! He goes from being a grumpy old man to a bratty little boy in seconds (hmmm maybe the similarities between he and Fitz go past the face). He's unpredictable and he will kill again!
11. Althea Vestrit
- I fell in love with her immediately. She's rude to Kyle and then spends the next two weeks sleeping on the floor so she can be closer to Vivacia. She had my heart from the get go. Her ending will always leave a bitter taste in my mouth but none of it is her fault. She starts off a little immature and really grows into a woman worthy of captaining her own ship.
10. Wintrow Haven
- Ship of Magic!Wintrow has my entire heart. He frustrates me to no end with how he treats Vivacia but his arc is insane. He's generally an honourable guy. He frees the slaves and aids in the overthrowing of his father. He becomes a competent sailor and always shows Etta kindness. And despite his corruption by Kennit, he retains his moral compass and grows to be a good guy. I choose to ignore him in Ship of Destiny (just like Robin Hobb oops-) because I don't know who that man is :)
9. Malta Vestrit
- Without a doubt the best Liveships character. She has some of the best development I've ever seen. She's really the Amy March of Bingtown. She's self-centred, annoying, and that girlllllll. I love her so much. She's so clever and achieves so much.
8. Verity Farseer
- MY KING! treated Fitz like a human being which, in this book, is a step up from how most people treat him - especially when he's a boy. He's always a friendly face, even when he's so bogged down by defending the entirety of the Six Duchies with no thanks. He loved very honestly and had great respect for people who deserved it. And in the end, he made the ultimate sacrifice for his people for his folk.
7. Bee Farseer
- She's just as much my daughter as she is Molly's, Fitz's, Nighteyes', and Beloved's. She won me over so quickly, and just when I thought I couldn't love her more, she started biting. I hope one day we see more of her!
6. LadyPatience
- You should have been mine???????? Such a fun, unapologetic character. She is so herself. I feel so seen by her constant, ever-changing hobbies and messy room. She and Lacey are the duo of the century.
5. Burrich
- When I read a book and I fancy a character, I tend to stay loyal to that character. I can love all of the characters, but I only love one. I took one look at Burrich and knew i'd found my man. His parenting skills were questionable at time, but he was doing what he thought was right. He gave up his life to raise Chivalry's son. He stepped up and took care of Molly with no expectations. He raised Nettle like she was his own. Just a solid, good man.
4. Nighteyes
- The best parent in this whole series. He's sarcastic, he's clever, and he's got such an entertaining dry sense of humour. He's a great influence on Fitz and he isn't afraid to call him out. The Wit is such a fantastic aspect of this series and the wit-bond that Fitz and Nighteyes share is so so beautiful.
3. Kettricken
My Queen. I haven't felt this strongly about a character in a long time. Always a beacon of honour in a story of political intrigue, secrets, and betrayal. They really lucked out with this arranged marriage. Not a single person in this story deserved her.
2. Beloved
- Fool, Amber, Lord Golden, Beloved. What a character. every facet of this character is so interesting and deep and beautiful. Amber was THE character in Liveships, the Fool was THE character in Farseer, Beloved with THE character in Tawny Man. THE CHARACTER OF ALL TIME.
Fitz
- You get it.

me: yeah im gonna go to sleep
also me: *proceeds to send my friend 650+ words of pepsisprite analysis*
thinking about john being a literal embodiment of the narrative and davesprite being an embodiment of the game. the game and the narrative are intrinsic to each other's existence, but without each other they would be useless. what's the point of the game if no ones watching, and whats the point of watching if no ones playing? john and davesprite’s relationship sort of mirrors that, davesprite wouldn't exist as a sprite if john had never died, but john WOULD have died if davesprite didnt save him. they're necessary to each other's creation and to each other's continued existence and relevance.
they're the world's shittiest soulmates because their relationship is so riddled with the game and narrative but davesprite and john are tied together in a way which ends up with davesprite always ending up right next to john again. johndirk and pepsisprite are very related what with davesprite mirroring dirk in a bunch of ways, but the difference between the two ships is mainly when they would happen imo. (canon) johndirk can only work postcanon, mostly because they simply don't actually get to meet each other until then, whereas pepsisprite HAS to happen during the game, the 3 year trip to be precise.
all they had were those 3 years together, really, before everything went to shit. obviously they had known each other before then, but that was john and dave. the "real" dave, before the specifications had to be made. it's kinda sad how because of the timeframe that pepsisprite would be able to work out in, they could never actually have a relationship. like they were both dealing with their own issues (most of which never were resolved, not fully) but it mightve fixed them tbh.
thats really why I'm a big fan of back to the beginning post game aus that include the splinters because their stories are never really completely resolved, most of them are sort of just brushed away or swept into something new (e.g. davepeta)
also going back to what I said earlier on how johndirk mirrors pepsisprite in a way, it does! but there's a lot of nuance to the situations? davesprite is more like bro than dave is, thus making him more like dirk, but he's still a dave yknow. pepsisprite is actually a closer parallel to jakehal, especially by the end of the boat trip with the vaguely antagonistic relationship the two of them have.
actually i think they should be kismesis sometimes as a treat. john has so much emotion and anger built up and having somewhere to vent out that frustration would probably be really good for him. at the same time, though, they're also moirails because john and dave are quite literally the closest humans can get to moirallegiance. john and davesprite transcend quadrants in the actual definition of it, embodying the quads all at once instead of vacillating.
davekat (a ship most people consider to embody all quads) sort of does something similar, however a lot of the time their characterization is of vacillation between redrom and blackrom vs where pepsisprite is happening simultaneously.
davesprite *is* proud of john and he does really love his friends, however because of the trauma he went through growing up (which was later reinforced by all the shit that went down in the game) he can only express so "ironically" or backhandedly, and john is so repressed to hell and back that *he's* not even sure what emotions he's feeling half the time
I think the fact that the two of them can so effortlessly communicate despite all that, though, really shows you their relationship. john can see the genuine in davesprite's "ironic" statements, and davesprite can pick out john's feelings through all the happy freedom bullshit. they communicate so well despite everything because they're best friends and because they've known each other so long. davesprite is important to john just like john is important to davesprite, and they always end up right back next to each other.

I'm sorry but Loser Baby from Hasbin Hotel is so Destiel coded. Husk is encouraging Angel to accept his flaws as a part of him like how when Castiel was down in the dumps in s6/7, it was Dean who reminded him of his worth and he accepts him for who he is. For all the times Dean raised Cas' spirits when he was at his lowest, the angel's heart was greatly touched by a human soul. Husk made Angel realise that there was something more beyond the darkness that's keeping them shackled and that there's love in the horizon. Husk reminded Angel that's he's more than just a toy to be fondled with, but a person deserving of forgiveness and love. It's giving me "I'd rather have you crushed or not" vibes. It makes me wish that Dean and Cas got a duet like that in the show. I think it would have been the icing on top of a very beautiful cake.

If I told you there was a series of games created before I was born, developed by Capcom, and that I was obsessed with a pairing of middle aged men within; The pairing being comprised of a someone around a decade or so older than the younger, lighter colored hair, stern and serious with a very deadpan sense of humor, along with “this is my job. I shall do it perfectly” demeanor about his work— very cat-coded in general, if you can think it, it will most probably apply— and the younger being very a determined brunette with firm morals who goes toe to toe with the older man and is frequently one of the only ones who can do so with their hell-bent insistence to do good and defend those who cannot, no matter the cost, who is quite dog-coded in reverse. They spend a few years in each other’s company, learning about each other (even if it’s at a distance and professionally) and then. Something happens. The older one of the pair betrays the brunette — his strings being pulled by a higher power, but it does not excuse him— and in the process reveals a cowardly and vengeful side after the event, causing the entirety of the franchise we play to happen. And then only a bit later in the storyline, one murdered the other, in cold but passioned blood, because destiny deemed it this way and they only heed the call of it. And whether or not it was intentional, leaving said murdered man’s child an orphan completely alone in the world as a side effect. For years after the event, they are satisfied with what happened, if burdened by guilt. But they were right to do so, weren’t they? They proceed to be metaphorically haunted by the man they killed for the rest of their life, however. And that will come to a head for them.
Now… am I talking about Chrisker (Chris Redfield/Albert Wesker), or Shingou (Mitsurugi Shin/Karuma Gou) ?

Thinking about how aggravating it is that fandom boils down a lot of really fascinating Ace Attorney ships to "oh, so we're copying narumitsu's homework again, are we?" --as though the only reason that someone might find plausibly these ships (romantic and/or platonic) interesting is surface-level similarities to the fandom juggernaut pairing and not like the compelling characters and their established bonds in and of themselves.
#aa salt#ace attorney#imagine acting like your ship 'invented' devotion to an old and once-dear friend and wanting to save them from the world and themselves#and being completely unironic about it#and assuming that other ships that involve this very very common and established trope are just 'copying' your fave#n@rumitsus do this all the time and have the audacity to act all *shocked pikachu face*#if someone dares to suggest shipping cykesquill or nahyupollo romantically#asoryuu gets a pass but then some people turn around and dunk on baroryuu and asobaro on their behalf#which also sucks b/c honestly i prefer both of those ships#but i like asoryuu well enough and they deserve better than being reduced to 'what if narumitsu in period drama setting?'#sorry not sorry but#cykesquill; nahyupollo; asoryuu are all arguably more interesting takes on the dynamic than the basic blueprint set by n@rumitsu#krisnix and langworth also fall into this albeit not in a paralleling n@rumitsu's arc way#but specifically kris and lang being reduced to being phoenix's and miles's 'type' and/or temporary displacement by the nm shippers#kris may be rich; smart; quiet; and glasses but he is so much more than 'miles but evil'#meanwhile literally all that phoenix and lang have in common are spiky hair; heroic; and sassy#and yet it's just assumed by much of the fandom that this is the case and its just phoenix or miles only being attracted to kris and lang#b/c of surface level similarities to their true beloved#i just...i'm tired#why do so many of y'all have to filter everything about every aspect of this fandom through a n@rumitsu lens#do not even get me started on 'that man' nonsense#fandom makes aai 1 entirely about one (1) line and totally ignores all of the more interesting dynamics for miles w/ gumshoe; lang; + kay#phoenix isn't even in the damn game and yet people are fixated on a single vague allusion to him instead of all the other great stuff#happening w/ miles' character in the game that have little to nothing to do with phoenix#not tagging n@rumitsu b/c omg can you even imagine?#but i guess i can tag the others#cykesquill#nahyupollo#asoryuu

Lrb yeah I think I've finally realized which kinds of ships are my favourite. The ones where people are very different on the surface level and have different temperament, but deeper down they share something very complicated. Like a similar internal struggle, a similar trauma, a similar past... They have similar core, similar pain even, but came out different people out of this. So on a deep, subconscious, intimate level they understand each other being similar, whereas on the upper levels they complete each other being opposites!

sometimes you read something for a fandom you were crazy over years ago and you encounter one of the ships you loved back then and you just think “yeahhhh…. this is still great :) way to go younger me you were so based about this actually :)”
#anyway I still care a lot about Obitine apparently#their respective commitment to their respective ideals and moral codes… the way they love each other more than life#(literally. they’re so willing to die for each other.)#and yet that never leads them to violate who they /are/ or who the other person is#Satine is willing to never see him again rather than ask him to leave the Order. he is willing to leave the Order all she has to do is ask#they are able to rest in their love for one another bc they know the other loves them in such a way that they would never ask#for their compromise#idk this makes very little sense it’s 2 a.m. I’m delirious I have church in the morning but I wanna rewatch some Clone Wars now#hfhfhfhhdhdhdhehdhdhdhfbbdsjsjfhfj#gurt says stuff#edit: wait actually this is so funny—bc I just realized that Din Djarin and Obi-Wan are quite similar in a lot of ways#so the parallels here are incredibly funny to me for some reason. the Kryze women just have a Thing for reserved men who are#completely devoted to their religious values and would do practically anything for their adopted family huh#(ftr I don’t know if I ship DinBo or not but I do understand the appeal and I am open to the possibility of the writers play it right#still bitter about losing Cara tho. bc I was SO curious to see how Misters Filoni and Favreau were going to develop that#n I had a vague suspicion based on my knowledge of how Filonis brain and stories work that ~something~ may have been meant to happen there)

I really wish I didn't keep comparing Kirk/La'an and aos!Kirk/McCoy but like
La'an being like you see me, and you don't care about my name, you see the real me, and it makes me want to be my best self
and aos!Kirk meeting McCoy who just doesn't give a fuck when Kirk introduces himself, who maybe doesn't even recognize the name, who just sees "Jim", who stays and always sees just "Jim"
the same way Kirk keeps seeing just "La'an"
and McCoy becomes the only person Jim opens up to and can be vulnerable with
the same way being with Kirk makes La'an want to be vulnerable

Nancy clung onto Jonathan, saying she didn’t want to let him go, while then saying she could hide him in a tent in their basement like Mike did with El.. and you expect me to believe they’re not written similarly? They’re the same ship.

So the more that I think about the blackwater arc and just the characters in it, it just makes me go insane because I love parallels and similarities in characters. Gonna be some (many) spoilers so under the cut
This is gonna be about Shi Wudu and He Xuan primarily lol. BUT literally the way they share so many similarities...like ofc there’s the way that Shi Wudu switches his brother’s fate with He Xuan, leading to the death of an innocent man and his whole family. But we also get He Xuan abducting Ming Yi and just...leaving him to rot basically? Like they both lead to the death of an innocent for what is pretty much a selfish reason. Both reasons are understandable in their own circumstances (SWD trying to save SQX, HX wanting to get his revenge) but both do something horrific to the one who suffers for their choice.
There’s also the parallels they have with their control over the waters. Shi Wudu essentially controls water that is most related to people (i.e. trade, travel, those kinds of things) while He Xuan control waters outside of people’s control. And it’s interesting because BOTH of them are known for causing ship wrecks, and sinking ships which is in the Water Tyrant and Black Water Sinking Ships.
Also maybe this one’s controversial but I notice a lot of people comment of the lack of choices that Shi Wudu gives Shi Qingxuan, but in some ways I would argue the same for He Xuan. He says that he gives them many choices to separate themself from their brother but...those choices feel overly uninformed and underexplained. It isn’t very fair of He Xuan to have the expectation that Shi Qingxuan wouldn’t help Shi Wudu especially considering that they do seem to be fairly close siblings. They both leave Shi Qingxuan in the dark about important things, to an unfair amount.
Like these are just some interesting parallels or similarities that I’ve noticed between these two, which the amount of hate between them makes more interesting lol.
