Yknow I can’t tell if this is happening more and more bc the general circles seem sick of arma bc it’s always in SRW-as petty as that whole thing is-or if this is just popping up more as years go on but I find it funny how people continually say “don’t watch arma as your first getter show, it’s confusing without any prior knowledge!” When like- you look at every other mecha imagawa has directed and it’s a stable of his to have a drastically altered setting from the original source, that your thrown into and doesn’t get shit explained to you so you have to figure it out as it goes along.
Like- he did this exact thing with giant robo even more confusing as he ripped a ton of characters from the authors other works, g gundam he said “what if I made Gundam a SUPER robot” so if you don’t know wtf the real robot is or know nothing about gundam that’s gonna be tonal whiplash and shin mazingers while a more traditional retelling first fucking ep is the ENDING. (Tetsujin the only one I can’t comment on here bc I know hardly anything about it since no one talks about it, but I’ll report back if it follows the same “Wtfness” bc I expect so) With arma even if he left after ep 3 and the rest of the changes (debateably) we’re added by Kawagoe, the first 3 eps are his standard story telling, especially given this was his third mecha project. Sure, someone may not know this if they never saw his other works or be informed similar director, but arma really isn’t a outline so I don’t get why it shows so much hostility if someone starts with it first.
Am I opposed to someone starting with the manga or any of the other Animes because they give better insight on the character? No, it’s all personal preference and anything else is just as a good starting point if not slightly better then arma. But I don’t like there should be a designated starting point when with getter the *only* thing someone needs to do in a specific order or way is what arcs of the manga to read-which even then, not the end of the world if someone stumble upon it via a later arc bc they can go back to read the rest if they find them-but the only anime they’ll need prior manga context to is arc since it’s outright a adaptation. Toei and all the ovas are their own thing, even if the latter takes elements of the manga.
Arma is no different from this and it’s really sad to see how it’s gatekeep like this as of late when it’s not actually “something you need a lot of experience in the franchise to understand” and more so “a effect of imagawas really specific method of story telling that is convoluted”.

I have (probably) too many thoughts about webtoons I have no read and webtoons I have not finished and their related media.

Lookism op popped up on YouTube feed and I just. Got really excited over it despite me not reading it because FUCK. IDK. ITS KINDA COOL. korean webtoon animated in korea! They added bg of traditional korean buildings for the korean characters and others for (I assume) the non korean characters! Idk it was just. Exciting to see this adaptation be eagerly korean after watching say Noblesse be animated (twice!) and have the original location erased. Like please! I don't want this to be the last! I really don't know much about lookism other than super basic plot but I hope the animation does well! Cause I'd love to see other webtoons be animated as well!
And with solo leveling I saw trailers for the game pop up and man. Those trailers were really good. Really well animated and fluid and dynamic in the fighting. Game itself looks pretty interesting but I can't say much cause I'm not really knowledgeable about games,,, but the animation! Was really nice! I'm... not entirely happy about sl being not animated in korea tbh but if the anime can make me feel as hyped as these game trailers did then (hopefully) it'll be fine

Well one I don't really like the decision to rename the character and the bg to be Japanese. Two, since SL is something with vast amount of international attention it would've been nice if it was used to push more funding towards korean animation. Despite korea having done tons of animation for anime and American cartoons there's not much in terms of their own animation and series. And if korea goes down the route of manhwa -> animation like how Japan does manga -> anime it would be pretty cool to see!
Would love to see more info on the sl anime tho, tbh I haven't really looked too much into it so I forget when it's expected to be released

It looks like the plot in G.U. is starting to bring in things from the anime now and I was wondering if I should watch it before playing any further but from what info I could find, there's soooo much more to it than just one show and there's a whole watch order list and spoilers to be mindful of and oooh my god. What have I gotten myself into???

anyway if anyone's curious why detco-hell is on a bit of a hiatus the story is that I needed a lil change of pace so I started watching a bunch of completely random mostly eh isekai anime (specifically because it is not my usual genre of interest) to kinda see what's up with that part of the world and have fun roasting them, and then I accidentally watched slime isekai aka tensura and was genuinely surprised how charming and wholesome it is with just enough war crimes to keep it exciting, not to mention the overall queerness of this series and the fun political shenanigans and world building unapologetic about its video game rules
so needless to say I've become a lil obsessed 🙏

I'm curious, do you have specific favorite voice actors for the Sonic characters? (Like just the main few, Sonic, Shadow, Tails, etc.) if so, may we know your favorites?
Brace yourselves, this is gonna be a long one so under the cut.
Jun'ichi Kanemaru is THE standard for Sonic. The guy is passionate about the role and captures him perfectly. Plus, he's a great singer! The English VA that came closest to matching him is Jason Griffith. (honorable mention to Devon Mack. Low as my opinion is of Prime, Devon's voice is actually pretty suitable for Sonic. Would like to hear him in a better product!)
The late Chikao Ōtsuka for Eggman was wonderful, but I have zero complaints with Mike Pollack. Really, no matter what style or tone he's portrayed Eggman in, he's always done it superbly. I'd say of all English VA's that worked in this series, Mr. Pollack's probably been the one who's NEVER had a miss. Guy's got incredible range even in his work outside of Sonic (using this as a chance to shill the Pluto Anime since he starred in it. GO WATCH IT PLEASE.)
Tails is really really REALLY hard to mess up. His voice actresses have typically been great at capturing him (save for OVA Tails who talks like he has a cold). Coleen's a fine Tails and suitable replacement for Amy Palant but I may still prefer Palant just because she's the nostalgic one for me being in all the 2000's games plus Sonic X.
Knuckles voice preference is a tough call. His VA needs to be able to play up both his aggressive and gentler sides. It's a toss up between Dan Green and his current VA Dave B Mitchell. Mitchell has been doing good work in the animated shorts so I like him and he's the best we've had since Dan moved on. His Japanese VA, Nobutoshi Kanna, is great as well for the same reasons. :)
Amy's best actress is still her JPN VA, Taeko Kawata (who is also a lovely singer!) Lisa Ortiz to this day is STILL her best ENG VA. She captured Amy's youthful, cutesy appeal but can IMMEDIATELY switch to her assertive side naturally. Fantastic range and it's too bad that Amy's assertiveness has been subdued so much lately that this can't be fully appreciated anymore.
Cream's had far fewer options to choose from. I like both her actresses in JPN (Sayaka Aoki) and ENG (Rebecca Honig) honestly. I do like the almost whispery gentleness to her ENG voice particularly. Just helps her feel very soft and sweet.
Shadow's JPN VA, Kōji Yusa, is so good. You really can't go wrong here. For the ENG VA, this might be a bit controversial because while I appreciate David Humphrey as Shadow's debut in SA2, I'm still partial to Jason Griffith purely because once he got accustomed to Shadow as a character, he really elevated the role. I think his performance in 06 was one of the best moments for the character overall.
Rouge might one of the few times where I actually prefer her current ENG voice actress, Karen Strassman, to her older one. Her JPN VA, Rumi Ochiai, is THE standard tho so Karen just suits her best as a close match! Youthful yet still mature and her flirty quality doesn't sound too forced.
Omega's JPN VA (Taiten Kusunoki) IS SO AMAZING. It's hilariously deeper than I expected but still robotic so something about it just WORKS. His ENG VA is alright too. But I just love the JPN Voice, I don't know why.
May do a part two if I have time for the others!

Obligatory mid-season Wakfu thoughts
Everything has been solid so far, this recent episode definitely establishes the theme of family and having to deal with strains of it and is much tighter than Season 3 as a result.
Be curious how Toress is handled since he is not really in for a sympathetic angle tho may be due to why these creatures exist in the first place.
Love the angle they are going for the Eilatrope goddess where she is so caring that it's also a burden. Yugo feels her pain but is still loyal to Amaila and his friends. It's a good groundwork for if she turns antagonistic.
Albert is a good dad I can't wait for his efforts to cheer up Yugo go to waste when it prob inadvertised floods the world again.
Amaila gets to have some badass moments and I am glad to go off queen. I am scared for her survival considering she is not in Waven rn.
Nora angst, while I adore the island of Wakfu ver of her (still better design) like what they are establishing with her so far.
Just kinda funny Qilby gets patrol right to just chill and be an ass, I wonder if the fact he can possibly die for real would interest him considering his curse.
I am aware of Lance Dur due to Waven (want to eventually watch his series) I am curious what people think of him who is unaware of his background.
Finally some good Eva content. I know people are mixed regarding Eva's character post-S2, I'm in camp she can be a mom but def needs content for her to stand out and I'm glad finally getting it. The dad drama is a nice parallel to what Yugo going through and am excited to finally get the backstory for Eva hopefully.
Cras are cool again and Flopin might actually get content now. Can tell the Sadlygroves are the ones I care for the most XD.
I'm miffed at the angle they are going for Tristepin being immature. It felt like he already matured by OVAs and did a nice balance of that while still being his goofy self. Have to see where it goes.
Ruel off to stop his ex-wife from donating his life savings to charity and it's just funny the contrast of this and the rest of the season.

thoughts on the paralive ending (spoilers, very incoherent)
lots of mixed feelings but I'll start of with the one thing I really liked: rowdiez instrumental made it into the ending :') didn't get a 3d mv but good enough ig
something I realized (kinda embarrassing it took me 12 eps but) finally figured out why the lab coat guy sounded so familiar. I tried checking MAL and the wiki but he didn't have a page so I had to check the ending credits but he's voiced by fyodor (also funny that he literally has no name. he's just "white clothes guy")
ok so for the mixed feelings part: I'm generally pretty open to adaptations doing something different (trimax vs trigun vs stampede and I like all of them) and maybe paraani will grow on me but the CD dramas are still better. I don't like how they removed a lot of iori akyr in general the characterization outside of the groups (satsuki's crush on anne, tsubaki entirely, club candy is there in theory except nobody talks about it, iori and zen are just in some really office building, yohei and iori's past (unless shuffle ovas???? /overdosing on copium))
the whole metal corrosion thing came kinda out of left field, especially how it started affecting the audience? somehow?? Like the other phantometal users sure, but the audience?? moving on already bc too many questions to unpack (I haven't listened to s2 of the dramas, but I heard cozmez never got that match with buraikan? do we get an explanation for that btw? I know I didn't happen like this but I mean I guess the ending point won't affect s2 too much)
I was kinda right abt the BAE saves the day thing but at least it was also all of them saving kanata? but the idea if ppl rapping at you until you get over the angst of remembering your twin is dead (except he's actually not but wtv) is kinda silly. (I'll take all the akyr actually doing something crumbs I can take at this point) bonus points for shura to just start playing a beat from the speakers and then leaves
I don't think they explained how nayuta's alive? and they had the audacity to not include shiki in the ending rooftop scene? (I know they were doing unit montages but like. did shiki even get to see real nayuta. he just. never got closure???) at least we got alt hair for cozmez tho (black hair kanata and long hair nayuta)
sorry I've been thinking abt this episode for a day and I still can't articulate anything :/

Camera Roll Challenge: Dating Jean Kirschtein
I dunno what it is about Jean but this man reads hopeless romantic to me. Maybe the whole being an artist thing. Especially when he's older. Breakfast in bed just cause you deserve it. Probably did the thing where he wrote letters to his future self to open at certain life milestones. Some of them are to his future significant other. When they get engaged. When they get married. When they've been together 5, 10, 15, etc years.
It's something he keeps up with as he gets older too. So they aren't always just from his super younger self. Maybe he wrote one to his future partner in high school then after going through lots of growth and experiences he decides to write another one to that same person. It'd be really interesting to read how much he changed in-between those years. I think he'd also make ones for partners that are like, what I was thinking in the moments before our first kiss. when I knew I'd fallen in love with you. other ways I thought of proposing. (Man, I'm so smitten for this man, I can't believe out of everyone I'm writing the most in depth for him. lol)
I don't know if he ever reaches the smooth or suave level when flirting or asking folks out --tho he thinks he has lol. He's so corny but it's really sweet and cute. Probably continues to use ridiculous pickup lines on people as a way to break the ice.
He can dance-thanks to Connie! He's a got pretty good rhythm and is a quick learner when someone takes the time with him. So thanks to his bestie Jean can salsa, batchata and merengue. He's always up for going out dancing and would take the time to teach his partner. Along with that, he's also the type of person that feels a big urge to wine and dine his partner and take them out on regular dates no matter how long they've been together.
Also the dancing wouldn't just be when yall are out on the town. Saturday morning cleaning days often lead to some kind of dancing and sometimes dance-off shenanigans. Depending on the music selection.
Like Bertholdt, I can really picture Jean being into theatre. Though, unlike Bertie, he very much thrives being the center of attention on stage. Related to the hopeless romantic thing, I can see him memorizing monologs, sonnets and poetry to recite to his partner.
Also, while there is that one OVA of him being a lil shit to his mom, I feel like once he gets over that teen "too cool for my mom" era he's a great son. His mom is so accepting of you and the first time you come for dinner she's totally the stereotypical mom who breaks out baby photos of her Jeanbo! I feel like she'd be such a great mother-in-law and is just so thrilled that Jean found someone to give his heart to.

Top middle: Random morning with him bringing you breakfast in bed. And then also cleaning up the dishes afterward! Definitive husband material right here. (not that the bar should be that low but it's a green check) And you can't help but wanna catch a photo of those pretty legs of his as he's heading out.
Middle left: Okay I can't make a Jean post without bringing up horses. lol I feel like he grew up in the burbs and never really interacted much with them. But being besties with Sasha he ends up tagging along with her and Connie when she starts learning to ride from friends at the Ren Faire she works at in high school. Also, can you imagine how dreamy this man would look dressed up as a knight? Then waxing on poetically about how much he's in love with you? Corny as hell but my heart would definitely be doin flips.
Middle center: Why did he take a picture of himself pretending to sleep and send it to you?? Who knows with this boy. But at least he's cute. And he does seem real snuggleable.
Middle left: Booooooooooooooooy. I don't know bout yall but this photo got me feelin some type of way. Not just the tongue but the beanie and the earring too. 😮💨 Just feels like our boy's whole vibe in a nutshell.

oh, I've had a hunch that Sanji got... cranked up to 11 in the anime. after OPLA I became manga-only reader, as I wanted the rawest possible OP experience and also bcuz reading is quicker than watching the anime 😅 (I'm still not even halfway through -- recently started Impel Down -- but it is such a great story, I already love it so much!!!) but I also started dipping my toes into the fandom. and I saw people hating Sanji for being a gross pervert. but while reading the manga, this man gave me more of a love-sick puppy vibes??? all the swooning and fussing over Nami and Robin seemed almost sweet (him running towards them with flowers in Skypiea or cotton candy in Long Ring Island? c'mon, that was adorable) he has his moments but they aren't even that bad, tbh. I wondered that maybe it was a misguided hate towards his special treatment for women (chivalry?????) rankling feminists, tired of men treating women like wilting flowers in constant need of man-help but no, people seemed very dead-set on him being a straight up pervert and I realised... oh, those are anime fans... oh, no... what happened here, and I got discouraged from trying to watch the anime, since if it changed Sanji, one of the main characters, it was very likely to change other things, especially given how old the anime is. and then I realised that it already changed things even in the first episode and I kind of... stuck to the manga for now. maybe I will watch some movies just to see the One Piece world prettily animated 🤔

First of all, some recommendations for you so you can enjoy the animation ^^
If you want to enjoy One Piece animated with an "Oda feel", watch the movie "Strong World". The script is written by Oda and you can watch it after finishing Thriller Bark.
Like with the rest of the movies, the content is not Canon content, so what you see on them doesn't really happen in the real One Piece story (even if some of the enemies pasts are canon), but this one is the best and more on character we can probably see.
After that, Oda was executive producer in "Film Z" (supposed to be after FishMan Island Arc, but preferably after Punk Hazard Arc to avoid spoilers) and "Gold" (watch after Dressrosa Arc).
His involvement with these movies is not so big, tho, so watch them with that in mind.
(For example, in "Gold" Oda only rewrote the script of the climax of the story, because he was specially unsatisfied with how that part was done. They had to redraw the last 10min of the movie OvOu)
Also he was a producer in "Red" (watch after Wano Arc), and he made a lot of interesting comics and things that are canon pre-Movie... but the Movie on itself is weird. They changed many things of his initial notes and the characters are very "out of character" in my opinion.
It has very good music and animation, tho! But yeah... watch with caution ^^U
(I was not gonna mention it at first, but why not... there is also "Stampede", but "Oda stated that he would not have allowed the movie's story to be produced if it was not a commemoration of the anime's 20th anniversary." So... I wouldn't watch it if you expect anything that makes sense in his world or characters xDU)
(You also have the OVA "One Piece - Defeat Him! The Pirate Ganzack", which pre-dates Toei's Anime adaptation. Oda took a lot of interest in this OVA, and he praised it a lot when it came out in 1998)

And second, in my opinion, you made the right decision going to the Manga! As you say, it is the best way to get the rawest version of the story. And also way faster to read it than to watch it xD

And now, oh boy, about Sanji... (this is gonna be a very reduced and fast thing I'm gonna write, but I plan on analyze the differences between the Manga and Anime in this other tumblr, if you want to see more eventually):
Your hunch is completely correct. Sadly Sanji's character is completely obliterated in the Anime ^^U
He is reduced to his perverted side (and very veery amped up), or to being mean and fighting all the time. He has nothing of the kindness he shows in the Manga, only the things they can not exclude for the story to make sense. The many fillers also show a different Sanji than the one shown in the Manga.
The Anime also shows Nami completely disgusted by him very often, which influences the way we see him as viewers. She just treats him like a slave when she is being "nice".
(Nami is also very different in the Anime. They all are different people in the Anime, honestly u_uUU)
So yes, I think most of people who hate him for being gross and a pervert mainly have their first and only contact being the Anime. And it is understandable feeling like that, because it is seriously a bad representation of the character. He is not himself at all.
The Anime reaches an even more unpalatable degree after the time-skip.

[((Little Spoiler of right After Time-Skip: Sanji comes back more sensitive to pretty women in the Manga, which translates into many nosebleeds until he recovers. But in the Anime they had always shown him in that level of pervert, or even worse! So they had to amp it even MORE and show him harassing random women and everyone being disgusted around him... something that doesn't happen in the Manga! It makes the character really stand out in grossness))]

As you say, Sanji in the Manga is a sweet guy, and only shows as a real pervert sometimes... but it is shown in a funny way. And Nami and Robin react in a non-negative way, mostly just amused that he is such a dummy. But everyone knows he is just harmless.
He totally acts like a love-sick puppy and has those sweet romantic outburst, but he can be a normal human being. And most importantly, treats them mainly as friends and human beings.
