I don’t share your skepticism. I feel that considering how secretive some gov’ts can be irl that it’s not completely out of the question that they could have built something like Space Colony ARK or that Gerald had knowledge of beings like Sonic to create Shadow or whatever and no one else knew. Honestly I blame CinemaSins for this way of thinking. I feel like just because the story takes place on Earth in the United States rather than on Sonic’s world and the United Federation or whatever the heck it was doesn’t mean it has to be 100% grounded in reality.

Agree to disagree then.

What I’m really curious about is how they’re supposed to incorporate some of the more important plot points of SA2 into the new movie, especially the Space Colony ARK. The existence of a hyper-advanced space station orbiting the Earth complete with a huge f###-off Death Star laser doesn’t feel too out of place or strange in the games because, despite the resemblance the Earth in the Gamesverse has to modern human civilization, (1/2)
there’s enough fantastical elements in the rest of the setting that it’s not too unbelievable that something like the ARK could exist. However, the Movieverse is very explicitly set in a fictionalized version of IRL Earth, which would seem to kind of neuter any potential portrayal of important parts of Shadow’s backstory, not to mention the entire plot of SA2. But then again, that’s really just a symptom of the main problem with how the movies have done their worldbuilding. (2/2)
Not to mention that before SA2, it’d been established that humans were fairly advanced already in the form of Eggman’s anything in the classic triology plus many settings that were shown to be cities of futuristic tech. (Casino Zone, Little Planet in CD, etc). Granted that Eggman’s an exceptional genius among people but a precedent was set and the Space Ark and GUN bases showed what people had been capable of 50 years prior to Eggman becoming active.
It’s worth noting that Sonic’s time setting is sort of a floating one in the sense that their eras are not strictly 1:1 to real life. The fanon gag of Shadow having what we’d consider fifties sensibilities is funny and all but doesn’t reflect the games since we don’t even know what year it is ever or how far into the future the entire series is tho we can assume it’s a more advanced one.
The movies are definitely going to be stretching things to make it all plausible considering how Gerald alone ties together quite a bit of the lore and world building for the series (implying he studied the ancient Echidna plus all the chaos looking robots). Since the setting and origin of this story exist in a separate world, they’ll have to find an adequate excuse as to why Gerald knew the other dimension existed and based his creation on a hedgehog to begin with. Sonic X if I recall kind of just glazed over this missing link in its two world conundrum and didn’t really address by saying “it makes sense because...IT JUST DOES OK?!”

Speaking of Sonic Movie 3, I’m not sure if they’ve ever confirmed her inclusion, but considering it’s gonna undoubtedly be an SA2 adaptation (or at least heavily inspired by it) and it would be strange without her in it, who do you think would work well as Rouge?
Tbh it’d be a huge surprise if Rouge or even Amy get introduced. There’s already going to be so much to have to set up that bringing in an additional character and making sure her part in the story is adequately addressed might be too tall an order for one movie. It was already a struggle introducing both Tails and Knuckles at the same time. They probably will introduce her later (now that it’s confirmed they want to do a cinematic universe type deal).
Maybe Rouge or Amy gets an after credits tease, cameo or something but that’ll be about it. It’s gonna be more important to focus in on Shadow's arc, his relationship with Maria and Gerald, GUN’s history, Eggman and our main trio (plus human characters).
My pick for Rouge’s VA? Ideally her current game one but if it must be a celebrity one....... it'd be kinda funny if they got Halle Berry (older one, not little mermaid actress) since Halle played as Catwoman once and she'd do a pretty good youthful, sultry voice.
It'd be a double gag too since Halle starred in John Wick 3 - Parabellum as a contentious frenemy of his, not too unlike Shadow and Rouge's dynamic. Imagine the memes.

For someone who’s so sour on the Sonic movies it’s refreshing to see you apparently agreeing with the rest of us on Keanu Shadow.
With Sonic as the sole exception, all the voice castings have been solid choices. Could’ve gone with the Rock of all people for Knuckles then they 300 iq’d us by doing the least obvious but better choice with Idris and I was very pleasantly surprised! Even better they actually cast Tails’ game VA!
Give credit where it’s due, nice work voice casting team. 👏🏼👏🏼

Honestly? After the John Wick movies I can definitely see why they picked Keanu Reeves. He’s proven he can pull off the “tragic anti-hero” archetype VERY well.
Even as far back as his role in Constantine shows he’s well suited for that archetype!
You know what’s also interesting? Shadow’s game was strongly based on the Constantine movie, which came out before its production. Seems it was fated from the start haha

Jeez, who spit in your oatmeal today?
No one? I’m just suprised about the outcome of this casting. That’s all!
Making a light-hearted funny about crazy coincidences isn’t a critique of any kind anon. 😅

I was looking at an old post for nostalgic reasons and saw this that I wrote in the tags?!
Considering a lot of people have suggested that Keanu should play as Shadow in the third movie... guess we’ll see if I jokingly predicted this almost a decade ago. 😳

Is 'Shadow and Jolt' ongoing? I'm curious how their relationship will grow. I like that you made Shadow so calm and always a little sad (and also somewhat clueless toward certain social cues, this make mim more, how to say? 'human?') instead of the boastful psychopath jerk like the one of the IDW comics. I like you showed us Shadow can work fine with light hearted/funny situation without losing his cool.
I would be interested about also how Jolt will develop, who she is. Usually I don't like Sonic fans characters, but this one caught my attention. I would like have her among sonic's friends instead of Silver, the chaotix and virtually all post Adventure series characters.
It most definitely is still ongoing! Just on hiatus as of now. The next update's very slow-going but I've been tinkering with it in its digital drafts.

Wow, thank you so much for your kind comments! Shadow is such a great character and it was important that his best traits are captured as accurately as I could make them.
Cool characters with reserved, straight-man personalities work well in comedy where silliness happens TO them rather than them intentionally causing it. It doesn't mean they have to be completely humorless though. Shadow's capable of cracking a sarcastic quip here and there or doing something funny at the expense of an enemy (kicking Infinite's teeth in for example). He's just not an enthusiastic, jovial type like Sonic.
It's a big relief that you noticed the nuances I'm attempting to carefully weave in. It's not perfect and there's always room for improvement but it's nice to know that the effort is appreciated. And I'm so happy that you look forward to more of Jolt! Sincerely hope the story is worth the wait for everyone invested in seeing her grow. Thank you again. <3
Gosh, there are so many characters I want to draw Jolt meeting. You are all so patient and I truly truly feel blessed having such an amazing audience. U_U

Tumblr doesn’t do this anymore but there once was a time when you’d get notified if someone used your gifs. This is only a small sample of the very... diverse range of uses for this one melancholic Rouge gif.

When it comes to designing fan characters, do you like to stay within the confines of what people consider to be “acceptable” for certain aspects, like powers/abilities, specie choice, overall design, incorporating certain ties and affiliates to official characters, etc? I guess the “unspoken rules” when it comes to making a “proper” oc that fits the overall spirit and lore, rather than an “oc in sonic style” that “doesn’t fit”. Do you think that taking a leap of faith to originality is bad?
Tumblr media
This is a thoughtful question Anon, but I find it concerning that there's an insinuation how wanting to be held to any kind of standard is "bad" for originality. In my experience, this is not always the case.
Having self-imposed restrictions can seem unnecessary if your goal for creating is to not think hard about expectations and instead, purely for self-expression. There are no hard rules for how to make fanart. If you want to add a ton of accessories on fan characters, use every color under the rainbow or construct one in a way that breaks the Sonic standard, it's your choice! What's gained from making characters for the joy of it and without the weight of "perceived expectations" looming over you is a reward in of itself.
With that aside, what really matters is what your ultimate goal is with your fan characters. Because when people ask for my insights on designing one, what I believe most are REALLY searching for is a way to get an audience to CARE.
This is a much deeper conversation beyond whether or not your character is "original" and "breaking the rules". Now you're entering uncharted territory where it's no longer about what only YOU want out of your creations. You HAVE to now consider how OTHERS will perceive them and make intentional design choices that gets the audience and reactions you WANT.
Jolt and Strike's Crew were created in the frame of mind that they would be used for a full story line. The ultimate goal is to create an engaging comic that both appeals to my own interest in this series while still drawing in an audience. And of course, this causes me to have to consider what makes a character bring an audience in and KEEP them. It ultimately defines what kind of character it will be!
Having a standard to measure your creations against isn't a hamper on originality. In fact, by HAVING restrictions, you're challenged to think OUTSIDE of the box and find an elegant solution that can be novel but still fit. Not all good ideas are born from having NO obstacles in our way; rarely does it work like that.
When starting Shadow and Jolt, I had zero clue on how to actually make a likeable character. I knew theories, I had read about it and made fan art of established characters that people already liked.
BUT I had never put it into practice from scratch. I had to learn as I went and made a ton of mistakes until the right solution became apparent!
This is a long answer but basically Anon, what is your intention? Do you just want to create for the sake of it,
or are you creating to be seen and have others engage with your work like that of an Author with an audience of Readers? Do you want to BUILD an audience that likes your fan-characters, wants to learn more about them and is EXCITED to see more of them?
That's the real question to reflect on. And it may require asking yourself if you even know what it means to achieve such a goal.
Because believe me, it's not easy. It took YEARS to build what I have now. But, it's also extremely rewarding and for me, worth all those extra late nights spent working diligently to make it happen.
I hope this helps anon. I get that this may not seem like a very fun answer. It's not always fun to create for an audience. Sometimes it's very hard! But if you love it enough and you are open to knowing what you don't know, you can find joy in a healthy challenge. This project is still just as fun for me to do as it was 6 years ago when it began. And I wouldn't change it one bit. :)

I completely agree with the character ages, Sonic will always be 15!
Too, why can't we have "Talk about low budget flights! No TV or movies? I'm outta here!" Sonic?
...instead we have "bAlDy nOse Hair? GoTta reMember that onE!" Sonic.
I miss Sonic Adventure.
Gonna be totally honest and this may be a bit controversial but
Sonic's always been kinda cringe, even in the Adventure Era.
That's not to say I'm defending "Baldy McNosehair' because I agree, it's a bad line and not really funny but.... this isn't THAT new for the series.
For example, watch the original ending for SA2. After having a morose moment with Rouge by returning Shadow's ring to her and Amy interrupting him in deep thought on what had happened, he dismisses it by saying
"Let's go home! To the planet as COOL and BLUE as me!"
youtube
And it's just... the delivery was jarring to the atmosphere that it cracks me up. I know he's not one to dwell on sad things but that switch up after such an emotional roller coaster that is Shadow's story-line is such a funny way to end the whole game on.
But granted, it works because he still gives Shadow a final quiet goodbye after that so AT LEAST it saved that moment from being laughed off too easily. This felt intentional as a good little character moment because even if the line's awkward, it's probably just him trying to keep the spirits up after a heavy ending. Which is pretty in character of him to do.
These awkward moments usually came off as just being earnest and sometimes added depth despite itself.
Also, Mcnosehair is far less offensive to me than
Tumblr media
But even this isn't too dissimilar from some of the embarrassing lines he's said in Shadow the Hedgehog for example.
There are definitely parts of the Pontaff Era I dislike quite a bit and I wholeheartedly admit I'm more into Classic->Dark Ages in terms of overall tone, intent and execution. But I think people's underlying issues with Pontaff's Era has less to do with the once-in-a-blue-moon cringe lines and more an overall issue with intent, tone and execution of them.
But that's a much bigger conversation than I can get into today. Maybe another time when I have the energy for it.

I think it's cool seeing these characters as humans. I fell like it's easy to forget that Sonic Characters are supposed to be so young, like legit teenagers
It's so funny how easy it is to forget since they're all completely self-sufficient and don't have parents with only ONE exception for Cream and Vanilla.
Even though Sonic Channel has removed their ages, they'll always be a specific age to me. Sonic is 15 years old doggone it. 😤

Have you ever drawn a human jolt before? Or any human Sonic characters at all? I feel like maybe you have, but I can't remember.
(love your art btw! Jolt is one of my favorite Sonic fan characters ever ❤️)
I have! You can see the messy sketches for initial ideas of their gijinka forms here.
TBH these sketches are better as first passes, not a final design. IMO, humanized Sonic characters should utilize the initial influences that guided the overall sonic aesthetic creation so it still felt timeless and recognizable and not "humans wearing a sonic suit". Which is a really tall order and one I've not had time to attempt more seriously.
There was another pass from years back that was never posted (kinda forgot haha). Still not "it" but feels a bit better and was still fun to explore.
Tumblr media
(Trying to not make their human forms look like Yu-Gi-Oh GX rejects is quite difficult.)
And thank you for your kind words!!! You are a blessing dear anon. So grateful that you like Jolt so much. Especially since its been so long since continuing her story. Everyone's patience really helps. ;A;
