Request: I would love to see something Like IT’s Career day at school and Jay and Will come to teach about their jobs along with others. And Halstead's sister gets bullied. During the break of moving in between careers someone comes and beats her up in like the bathroom and leaves her there and no one notices her being gone untill the end of the day. (I kinda want like Fire, Med, and Pd to find her)
sorry if it doesn’t make much sense you can choose how to end it and stuff
I also LOVE your fics I can’t wait to see more❤️
Authors Note; Y’all really love the angst huh, gotta deliver,, and hopefully you enjoy this little drabble. Also, part of me really wanted to title this, 'big sister hugs' because I think that Hailey would be the best big sister and also give the best big sister advice.
warnings: private girls school (yes that's a warning), bullying, getting jumped (i guess?), hospital and injuries,, Jay and Will not knowing girl bullying and being stubborn, a very poorly written plot
Tumblr media
High school was not always easy, but you were comfortable at your school with your friends. That was until there was a security issue and Jay’s information got leaked. Your apartment, school, Jay’s license plate, everything that could be used to track him ended up in the hands of the ‘bad guys’. Jay and Will had broken the news to you that they were pulling you from your current school, and moving to another school closer to Will’s. A private girls school, the ones with the fancy uniforms and stuck-up kids who thought the law didn’t apply to them because they had money. You hated it. You had begged Jay and Will to let you stay, but there was no changing their mind.
The first week was hell, you knew no one. Starting in the middle of the year meant that everyone knew you were the new girl. You were enrolled under your mother's maiden name, for extra safety. It was weird not hearing your name followed by ‘Halstead’. After the first week was gone, you decided to stick it out until the problem with Jay blew over, by then, you could probably convince them to let you go back to your other school. Three weeks passed by and intelligence solved Jay’s leak.
“So,” You began on Sunday family dinner, “Now that the whole leak in PD is over…”
Jay and Will shared a look from across the table.
You narrowed your eyes, “What?”
Will ran a hand down his face, “Listen…”
“You won't let me go back.”
“It’s a better school-”
“Better?” You spat, “How is it better? I hate it there!”
“It’ll get better,” Jay said, “You just need more time to adjust.”
“I don’t want to adjust-”
“We’re not pulling you out,” Jay said, “I know you're struggling right now, but you’ll make some friends and-”
“I can’t believe you.” You pulled away from the table, leaving your half-eaten dinner where it was and stomping off to your room. Jay stood to follow, ready to scold you for storming away and having such an attitude.
“Jay,” Hailey grabbed his arm, “Let her cool down.”
Tumblr media
Jay and Will didn’t budge on your school. You had gone from begging to bargaining with no success. Now you were giving them both the silent treatment. You knew it was immature and frankly ridiculous, but you were too mad to think clearly. Jay had already scolded you for not talking to him for the last week. You had ignored him.
Hailey was the only one you spoke too, because it wasn’t her fault that Jay was being stubborn. Even so, you didn’t tell her everything when she stopped by your room. Namely, the career day that was coming up. You knew telling her meant she would tell Jay. And Jay and Will had a terrible habit of embarrassing you at school. At your last school's career day, Will and Jay had come and talked for hours about their funniest stories. You knew if they came this time, your peers wouldn’t be as amused.
When career day did roll around, your dean stood in front of the school in the auditorium, introducing students and their parents. Your school was much smaller than your last one - something about smaller class sizes being better for learning - so the auditorium wasn’t fully packed.
Not everyone brought their parents, but the popular kids with parents who had good jobs came. Like the group of girls who hated you, who all brought at least one parent. Your dean invited students to the stage by class and then had the student introduce their parents. Your class was last, the biggest number of parents who had come. You were sat at the end of your class, mostly because you didn't have anyone to bring. Not that it bothered you.
“Next up, we have Olivia and her mom, Jen.”
Jen was a dentist, she spent 10 minutes explaining how her job worked and then opened for questions. There weren’t many, mostly a few questions from seniors about collages and other stuff.
Then it was Sophie, with her dad the Banker.
By the time the girls who hated you were called up, you were ready to fall asleep. No one here had an interesting job, most of the jobs were boring well playing jobs that you could never see yourself doing.
The main girl who didn’t like you was Madison. She wasn’t fond of how the teachers asked you for answers in class, not that you could do anything about that. Her friend group was made up of 5 or 6 girls who were seemingly lovely. All smiles and compliments around teachers but spread vicious rumors and lies when adults couldn’t hear. You had heard them speaking about you a few times, not that you cared. It wasn’t great to be the new girl with all the rumors, but you had banked on leaving the school before for long. Which, you knew now, wasn’t an option. So now you were stuck with the girls who all hated you for rumors or lies that you didn’t even know.
Madison brought her mum and dad with her, real estate agents who worked together selling multi-billion dollar houses. The whole time she had a smug look on her face. When she sat back down in her row, she turned in her seat, looking back at you.
“Didn’t bring anyone?” She asked.
You didn’t bother replying.
“Is it because your parents are coke addicts?” Her friend beside her pressed.
How that rumor even started you didn’t know, it was so absurd.
“Or is it because they’re dead?” Madison pressed.
You gave her a bored look, “I’ll take my family over your fraud family any day.”
Madison opened her mouth to bark something back, but was shushed by your teacher. She turned back to face the front, arms crossed over her chest. No doubt stewing in your words.
“We now have some guests to speak to you,” The Dean said through the microphone, “We reached out to some of our first responders and invited them to come speak to you too. Everyone please welcome Dr Asher and Dr Halstead from Gaffney Chicago Med.”
Will and Hannah walked to the stage, both in their Med scrubs with doctors coats on. Will was looking for you, you could tell from the way his eyes scanned the faces in the audience. You slumped in your chair, avoiding looking at him at all.
How did he find out? Did he and Jay find out somehow? Did your school contact them?
You really wanted to disappear now, your face was no doubt bright red by how much it was burning. You prayed silently that Will hadn’t told Jay, but you knew it was a useless prayer. If Will was here Jay would be too.
You got your answer when the dean explained that there were more guests outside on the fields. She ordered everyone to head that way, ushering students with promises of something ‘exciting’.
Outside, firehouse 51 had parked their rigs on the grass. 51 had their ladder extended, Mouch standing at the controls grinning like a champion. Not far from Mouch was Trudy, flanked by two patrol cars and their officers. Looking across the gathered first responders it didn’t take long to spot Jay and Intelligence. Their own cars were parked on the grass, the lights on. Everyone but Voight had their vests on, adding to the dramatic atmosphere already created.
Students huddled around, entranced by the cars and rigs which you had seen plenty of times. You tried to hide towards the back, but Kelly had spotted you and tried to usher you closer. You shrugged back at him, trying to make it look like you were stuck within the crowd.
“Firstly, we would like to thank Sergeant Trudy Platt and Sergeant Hank Voight, as well as Chief Wallace Boden for coming today. We are hugely appreciative to hear from you,” The dean spoke into a microphone, “Secondly, I want to ask students to be respectful, as these hard working men and women have taken time out of their busy days to come and speak to us. So we are going to listen and show respect. There will be time for questions and demonstrations at the end. Please Welcome Sergeant Trudy Platt.”
The crowd clapped as Trudy took the mic, but it wasn’t too enthusiastic. Trudy gave a similar speech to last year. Along the lines of what made district 21 special, intelligence and the hardworking patrol officers. She talked about fake calls and how breaking the law would wind you up in her cells etc. It was funny, a few quips earning laughs from teachers and parents. But you had heard it all before. You were dreading what the others would say. You didn’t want everyone knowing your brother was a cop, that would cause way too many issues.
So instead, you slipped away from the crowd, heading back towards the school building to hide in the bathroom.
You didn’t think anyone would notice, most people were paying attention to the speakers or interested in the rigs. You were wrong, of course, being followed almost immediately by Madison and a couple of her friends.
You got to the lockers before they announced themselves.
“What did you mean my parents were frauds, bitch?”
You turned around in fright, not even hearing them sneak up on you.
“I didn’t mean it,” You replied, “I’m sorry.”
You were, kind of. Mostly you were sorry that you had said it, because she genuinely seemed shocked. But this was Chicago, anyone with any money committed fraud, it was kind of the standard.
“I don’t care if you're sorry,” Madison snarled, she was taller than you so when she stepped closer you couldn’t help feeling intimidated. “What did you mean?”
“Madison-”
One of her friends pushed you hard against the lockers with a forearm over your collar, “Answer the question.”
You were by no means a confrontational person. Growing up, Jay always tried to teach you to talk out your issues, violence or fighting wasn’t a good solution. Will was the same, although both of them weren’t always the best at doing as they counseled.
“I just meant that,” You were panicking under the glare of all three girls, “You know, this is chicago and-”
“And what? Everyone is a criminal like your addict parents?” Madison got in your face again.
“My parents weren’t addicts,” You scoffed, now annoyed that she wouldn’t let that go.
“No?” The girl who was holding you back moved her arm further up your neck, pressing against your throat, “Then where are they?”
“If my parents were addicts, would you really think I'd be in a private school?” You pressed, “Use your brain for once, please.”
You should have known that would piss Madison off. She let out an annoyed scoff then pulled back her fist and punched your square in the nose. The force slammed your head back into the lockers, the sound echoing through the empty halls. The punch wasn’t hard enough to break your nose, but you would feel the blood start to drip down your lip. Madison shook her hand like she had taken more damage than you had.
“Want to say that again?” The third girl finally spoke up.
It was like they were all gaining confidence in the security of the three of them. When one of them said something the others would laugh and smirk.
“I don’t like bullies, you know,” Madison said.
God, the irony.
This time the punch came from the third girl, landing in your stomach. You didn't know her name, but she was on the volleyball team, so her punch was much stronger. Your body doubled over, arms crossing over your stomach as your lungs tried to fight your diaphragm for air. The arm holding you up was dropped, and your body fell to the ground as you tried to force yourself to take some deep breaths.
“This is what you deserve,” A girl said, before another blow landed on your ribs. The wind was knocked out of you again, causing you to cough and choke.
Madison crouched down to your level, “Bullies like you deserve to be put in their place.”
You didn’t have time to appreciate the irony this time, because she was kicking your head, hard.
Your body reacted on instinct, curling into itself to try to protect you from another blow that was sure to come.
“Hey!”
The three girls sprinted at the voice, running away from their actions.
“Hey, kid,” A hand on your shoulder made you flinch, when your vision cleared you realized it was just Kelly. He held his hands out to show you he meant no harm, then gently helped you sit up.
“You’re alright,” He said softly, steading you sitting against the lockers. You couldn’t even reply, focused solely on breathing through the pain in your head and side.
“I found her,” Kelly said into his radio, “North Hallway, bring a jump bag.”
Kelly gently touched the side of your face, tilting your head to look at the side you had been kicked.
“You still got that med kit in your bag?” He asked, knowing Kidd had taught you that in girls on fire.
“Yeah,” You said softly, your voice above a whisper.
Kelly ripped open your bag, rummaging through it until he found the small first aid kit. He was only after gauze, once he secured it, he ripped the package open and pressed the gauze to your head.
You winced, instinctively pulling away from him.
“I know,” He said, sitting down next to you so he could hold the gauze in place, “Sorry kid.
You both looked up as the sound of footsteps came running towards you. You might as well have been on fire, the entire house was rushing towards you. Jay and Intelligence were there too, Will and Asher running along beside everyone.
“This is overkill,” You said to no one in particular.
Kelly chuckled, shuffling so that Will could take his place next to you, “We’re all here for you, kid.”
Will replaced Kelly’s hand with his own, when Kelly pulled away you could see blood on his hand.
Jay croached on your other side, letting Will, Hannah and Brett take care of you.
“What happened?” He asked, looking over your bloody nose, head injury and the way you were holding your side.
You didn’t want to be known as a snitch, one glance behind your brother and you could see students being held back by teachers and 51. The school day was almost over, everyone would be gathering their things to leave. You hoped you weren’t in front of someone's locker who hated you, this would definitely make them hate you more.
You looked back at Jay, his eyes filled with worry, “What happened, squirt?”
“I, uh.. I fell.”
Will scoffed, “You fell?”
“Yeah, I’m clumsy,” You said.
“You fell and hit your nose and the side of your head?” Hannah asked, voice soft, “Are you sure that's the story you want to tell?”
Over her shoulder, Kelly was talking to Voight and Hailey. Hailey was pointing something out, a camera that was positioned above one of the classroom doors.
“Yeah,” You didn’t sound confident at all. But right now, you wanted to be anywhere but here.
Jay looked pissed, but he didn’t say anything. He got to his feet and stood out of the way as Hannah and Will helped you stand. They lead you over to the stair chair, despite your very vocal argument that you were fine.
Being wheeled through the crowd of students and their parents was the most embarrassing thing you had ever experienced. You passed by Madison at one point, who was leaning against her locker talking to her parents like nothing ever happened. You avoided looking her way, instead focusing on what Brett was saying about getting to the rig.
Outside the building things were less stressful and crowded. You managed to convince the four hovering adults that you could stand on your own to get into the back of the ambulance, even if you didn’t really think you needed one.
“I’m really fine,” You argued for probably the fifth time, “I think you're overreacting.”
Will sighed, running a hand down his face, “You are too stubborn for your own good,” He muttered.
Violet chuckled, “Just lay back, alright? You aren’t getting out of this, no matter how much you complain.”
She was right, but that didn’t stop you from pouting the whole way to Med.
At Med, Will hovered as Hannah stapled the laceration on your head. You weren’t too happy about the idea of being stabled back together, but Will had taken a photo of the laceration to prove you needed it.
“That’s so gross,” You said, pushing the phone away from you.
“That’s why you need staples,” Will explained, rolling his eyes.
Not long after Hannah had treated you and left you to rest, Jay, Hailey and Voight walked in.
“Are you doing alright?” Jay asked, hesitant to start another argument.
“I’m fine,” You repeated, “I don’t know why everyones making such a big deal.”
“You were attacked at-”
“I fell.” You interrupted.
“Y/N-”
“Jay.” You echoed in the same tone.
Jay's face flashed with irritation, he looked to Will for help.
“We know that’s not true,” Will said, giving you his best parental disappointed look.
“The whole thing was caught by the security cameras,” Hailey spoke softly, she was the only person in the room who knew what it was like to be a teenage girl in high school, “We just want to know what they said.”
You tried to come up with some kind of explanation that wouldn’t get anyone in trouble, but you came up short.
“It’s not that big of a deal,” You shrugged, avoiding eye contact with all of them.
Will leaned forward, he looked wary, “Listen, squirt, we want to help, but we can’t unless you tell us the truth.”
“That is the truth,” You argued back, crossing your arms definitely, “It’s not a big deal.”
“You’re in the hospital!” Jay gestured around, “What about this is ‘not a big deal’.”
You scowled, refusing to say anything else and just sitting silently.
Voight squeezed Jay's shoulder, “We’ll let her rest, come back later?”
Jay nodded, not bidding you goodbye as he stomped out of the room. You hadn’t seen him this mad in forever, you weren’t sure if this would blow over as easily as your other fights. Voight followed after Jay, he told you to get some rest then followed his detective to try to calm him down.
Will got up to leave too, he told you to rest and said he would come back soon. When the three left, it was only Hailey who stayed behind.
“I know you’ve been struggling at school,” She took a seat on the bed next to you, “I know what that’s like.”
You fiddled with your fingers, not wanting to admit she was right.
“You know what happened today wasn’t right,” Hailey continued, “Jay wants to press charges.”
“What? No! That’ll just make it wor…” You stopped yourself.
“Make what worse?” Hailey pressed.
You took a deep breath, trying not to get upset.
“Whatever is going on, I can help,” Hailey promised.
“You can’t get me out of that school,” You scowled.
“I think after today, that might be possible.”
You leaned back into the pillows. Dr Asher had given you some pain meds for your head, they removed the sharp pain and replaced it with a dull throb. You could feel it more as you got more upset.
“There’s this stupid rumor that my parents are addicts,” you explained, “Madison is always taunting me with it, saying that's why no one ever comes to parent evenings or teacher interviews…”
Hailey didn’t say anything, she just sat listening patiently.
“Before you guys came, she asked why my parents weren’t here and I said that I would rather have my family over her fraud one.”
Hailey nodded as she listened.
“It was stupid and as soon as I said it, I regretted it. When we were outside I went inside to go to the bathroom and Madison and her friends followed me… They, uh… Madison wanted to know why I said it and I apologized but she didn’t- she, she didn’t care and…”
Hailey got the cue, “Okay. It’s alright.” She pulled you into a gentle hug. “Everything’s going to be alright.”

“Get to Med… Jay’s been shot.”
As she waits in the waiting room at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center, the sound of her sergeant’s words echoes in her ears. Her heart is racing, her knee is bouncing, her hands are trembling, and dried up tear streaks run down her face. She feels like she’s been sitting in the room for an eternity, waiting for any news about her husband’s condition. He was already in surgery by the time she got at the hospital, which was a little more than two hours ago.
“Y/N!” she hears her partner, Kim Burgess, call out as she approaches her. When the brunette reaches her, she embraces her tightly.
After Jay and Y/N revealed their relationship to Voight, the two women became partners. They’ve been like sisters since they went through the academy together, and they got even closer after Y/N and Hailey Upton were transferred to Intelligence after Erin Lindsey left.
“Has there been any news?”
“I haven’t heard anything; Will just went to see if he can get an update,” she says before breaking down again. “I can’t lose him, Kim,” she cries into the shoulder of her best friend. “I can’t do it without him. We just got married. I can’t be without him.”
“Jay’s strong; he’ll get through this,” Kim reassures her as she rubs her back and squeezes her even tighter; it crushes her heart to see her best friend and chosen sister like this.
“Did you get the person who shot him?” she says, pulling away from Kim and angrily wiping away the fresh set of tears that are falling.  The anger in eyes and voice wasn’t intended for her partner, or Adam who had been with Jay at the time of the shooting, or the rest of their team but at the guy who fired the gun at her husband and shot him. She begged Hank to give her five minutes with the person when they apprehended him, but Hank ordered her to stay at the hospital because that’s where she needed to be the most and swore he wouldn’t go easy with the guy.
Kim replies, moving to sit in the chair next to the one she was in, “He’s in custody. Voight’s making his life a living hell, I’m sure of it.”
She sits back down next to her and asks, “How’s Ruz?”
“He’s blaming himself,” Kim replies. “He’ll be here when he’s cleaned himself up, and the others will be here after they’ve finished with the interrogation.”
She nods, letting Kim know she heard her.
Minutes pass as they sit in quiet, Kim holding her hand and reminding her that she is not alone. Will eventually returns and informs her that there haven’t been any updates just yet before he leaves once more to grab them all some coffee.
Just as Will comes back with Adam following behind him, the surgeon walks into the waiting room.
As he approaches, Y/N and Kim get to their feet. As the doctor begins to talk, Will moves to stand next to his sister-in-law. “Surgery went smoothly. We removed the bullet, stopped the bleeding, and repaired the damage the bullet caused. Jay will make a full recovery, but he will need to take it easy for some time.”
Y/N exhales with relief, “I’ll make sure he does. Can we see him?”
“Two at a time,” the doctor says with a nod.
“Adam and I will go update everyone,” Kim says to her and Will before exiting the waiting room with Adam.
The doctor leads Will and Y/N to the room where Jay has been moved. Jay opens his eyes and looks sleepily at his wife and brother as soon as they enter the room.
“Oh, baby,” Y/N breathes as she walks over to his bed and takes his hand in hers, looking at him with tenderness. “Please don’t put me through that again.”
“I can’t make any promises,” he says drowsily with a small smile. He raises her hand and kisses the back of it.
“How are you feeling?” Will asks as he stands beside Y/N.
Jay jokes with a slight smirk on his lips, “Like I was shot.
Y/N scowls at him, not in the mood for jokes right now, and says, "Don’t joke.”
“You love me, and you know it,” he gives her a small smile letting her know he’s teasing her.
“I need to get back to work, but I’ll stop by after my shift,” Will tells his brother, stopping Y/N from that is retaliating. “I’ll make sure to bring you some decent food.”
“Thank you, Will,” she says as he exits the room. Looking back at her husband, she sits on the edge of the hospital bed, clutching his hand on her lap. “I was so scared I would lose you.”
“I’m not going anywhere,” he assures her. “We still have a lot to do together.”
She leans down and gives him a soft kiss while whispering, “I love you.”
“I love you too,” he replies as he kisses her again. “Now, come lie down with me.”
“You’ve just gotten out of surgery. I don’t want to cause you more pain.”
“They’ve got me on the good stuff, honey, and after what I just went through, all I want to do is hold my wife and remind her that us Halstead’s aren’t easy to take down,” he says and pulls her close to him, moving them so she can lay down beside him.
With his arm across her shoulders and her head on his, he presses a kiss to her forehead and whispers, “I promised you forever. I’m keeping that promise.”

That Herrmann/Halstead DNA (Chapter Six)

It doesn't follow the same timeline and characters will follow different paths.

Chapter One Chapter Two Chapter Three Chapter Four Chapter Five
Chapter Six
Two minutes earlier
***
Maggie
“It’s just down this way,” Maggie said as she led Ethan, April, and Nat to Bex’s room. They’d all finished their shifts around the same time and none of them felt right about leaving until they’d had a chance to check in on her.
And on Will and Connor and Herrmann and the whole gang really.
She shook her head. Her heart ached for them.
At least they knew Bex was going to be okay and they’d heard that her friend made it through surgery. Now they could all focus on healing.
Maggie went to knock on Bex’s door when they reached it, frowning when she saw it was open a crack. She still tapped on it quietly before pushing it open—
“Oh, my god!” Maggie gasped at the sight in front of her and rushed forward with the others on her heels.
Bex was sprawled back unconscious against her pillows as a thin stream of blood trickled down the side of her face. Ethan and Nat pushed ahead of Maggie and instantly began a careful examination.
“Head lac’s not too bad,” Ethan said, gently shifting Bex’s hair. “Gonna need a couple of stitches though.”
“Pupils are equal and reactive.” Nat leaned in close and patted Bex’s cheek. “Bex? Come on, Bex, wake up.”
There was a soft groan followed by Bex’s eyelids fluttering, struggling to open.
“What the hell happened?” April whispered to Maggie. “Where is everyone? Why is she all alone?”
All questions she’d love the answers to herself. “I don’t know, but we—”
“Will,” Bex moaned, struggling to sit up.
“Hey, it’s okay,” Ethan shushed her as he tried to keep her still. “You need to stay put.”
“No, no, you don’t—” Bex pushed his hands away. “Ty. He has a gun. He took Will—”
The bang of a gunshot stole all of the air out of the room.
***
Jay
Jay hurried down the stairs with Hailey close behind him. The entire unit had split up to sweep the building alongside security, but no one had spotted Ty yet.
Part of him wanted to believe that was a good thing. That maybe Ty wasn’t headed their way.
But Jay knew better.
Hailey was right. Ty wasn’t going to let Emery go and the clock was ticking on them finding him before he got to her.
Bex’s floor was their next stop. Jay pushed open the door and stepped into the hallway. “I’m going to check in on Bex and let Will know what’s going on,” he said to Hailey.
“I’ll come with,” she said. “I’d like to—”
They both froze as a sound both familiar and yet horribly out of place tore down the hall.
Between one heartbeat and the next, they were both off and running in the direction of the shot.
***
Mouse
Mouse was halfway up the stairwell when he heard it.
His body reacted before his brain did. The shot rang out and he was already running, desperately trying to get to Bex as his mind managed to cobble together one thought.
Don’t let it be her.
***
Connor
The gun went off, deafening inside of the elevator, and Connor braced himself for the pain.
Pain that never came.
He opened his eyes on a shaky breath. Blinking through the spray of blood that had somehow made its way onto his face.
Ty stared back at him with wild eyes, arm still stretched out with the gun in his hand. He jolted when the elevator doors started to close and Connor flinched at the movement.
“Fuck this,” Ty muttered, before stepping back and running off down the hall.
Connor stood there, stunned, until a ragged gasp came from the ground and he looked down to see Will, lying there, and...
Oh.
There was the pain.
“Will!” Connor dropped to his knees beside him, pressing his hands into the rapidly spreading stain on his scrubs, trying to stem the bleeding. Will groaned at the touch, shaking his head.
“No—”
“I’m sorry,” Connor said. “You know I have to—”
“No, not me—” Will gritted his teeth. He reached up to grab at Connor’s wrist. “Bex. He hit her. She—”
“I’ll make sure she’s okay, but right now, stopping you from bleeding out is the priority.” Connor bit off a curse as the elevator doors tried to close on them again. “I’m sorry, this is gonna hurt.”
He got his arms under Will and pulled him out into the hallway. Will’s cry of pain rang in his ears as Connor whispered apologies, trying to move him as efficiently as possible.
“Help!” Connor called out as he got Will repositioned. “I need help over here! Now!” ***
Bex
“Will!” Bex screamed, lurching forward at the sound of the shot. Steady hands pushed her back. “We have to go! We have to help him!”
“We don’t know what’s happening,” Ethan said. “We can’t charge out into an active shooter situation. And you are not leaving that bed.” He shot a look at Natalie who kept her spot beside Bex with a firm nod. “Everyone stay back. I’m going to lock the door.”
“No,” Bex cried, sagging into Nat’s hold. “Ty took him. He—Will went so he wouldn’t take me—and now he—he needs help—” She sobbed, trying to get the right words out so they’d understand and stop wasting time and go and help him.
“Help!” Connor’s voice came through the doorway, faint, but clear. “I need help over here! Now!”
Ethan wrenched the door open and ran out.
“I’ll go,” April called out over her shoulder as she followed. “You two stay with Bex.”
“No,” Bex looked up at Nat and Maggie. “I’m okay. Please, go help them.”
The two of them had a silent conversation over her head. “We’re not leaving you,” Maggie said. “But I’ll take a look and see if I can tell what’s happening.”
Bex swallowed a groan as pain shot through her head as soon as she nodded her agreement. She did her best not to let it show. She had to know if Will—if he was okay.
Maggie stepped over to the doorway and poked her head out into the hall. Whatever she saw had her inhaling sharply. Natalie walked over briskly to join her.
Bex’s head was swimming. He had to be okay.
He had to be.
Ty couldn’t take him too.
Not Will.
She needed to see for herself. Bex forced her body to sit up and got her legs over the side of the bed. The whimper she couldn’t quite smother got Maggie and Natalie’s attention, but by then Bex had already managed to get to her feet.
“No, Bex! What are you doing?”
She tried to tell them that she needed to check on Will. Tried to wave them off as they rushed toward her, but then her legs were buckling and she felt herself going sideways, losing consciousness before she hit the floor.
***
Mouse
Mouse burst out through the stairwell door into the hallway and came face to face with a sweaty, shaking asshole.
This is the one, Mouse’s brain screamed. He hurt Bex.
Ty reared back at the sight of him, thrown for a moment before his face hardened and he lifted his arm.
One with a fucking gun in his hand.
Mouse didn’t give him a chance to point it at him. He stepped into his space, disarming Ty swiftly and passing the gun back to Ed who had come up behind them.
Ty yelled in frustration, struggling in Mouse’s grip and a dark part of Mouse, the one who wanted this man’s blood, loosened his hold.
Come on. He watched as Ty straightened up. Saw him weighing his options.
Go for it, you piece of shit.
Mouse saw the moment Ty decided to strike, blocking the hit easily and lashing out with one of his own. Ty doubled over, clutching at his stomach. Mouse followed it up with a solid punch across his jaw.
“That was for Emery,” he said as Ty staggered back. Another blow had Ty’s eyes rolling back as he fell to the ground. “And that was for Bex.” Mouse turned back to Ed. “You good here?”
“Yup,” Ed said, leaning against the wall as he unloaded the gun. “I’ve got this. You go—”
“Help! I need help over here! Now!”
Mouse was already running down the hall. He slowed down as he neared the elevator, seeing Connor kneeling down beside Will and blood—so much blood.
Ethan and April came running from Bex’s room and immediately dove in to help Connor.
Will had been shot.
But he’d—he’d been with Bex. So was she—
Mouse’s breath came quicker as he stopped himself from finishing that thought.
“Mouse,” Will whispered and Connor’s head whipped up to look at him.
“Good, you’re here,” he said, all tense business as he focused on Will’s injuries. “Go check on Bex, please. Will needs to know someone’s with her.”
“I’ll take care of her,” Mouse said, meeting Will’s eyes. “I’ve got her.”
Will nodded weakly before passing out cold.
“And I’ve got him,” Connor said, barely sparing Mouse half a glance. “Go.”
Trusting Connor to be as true to his word as Mouse was to his, he took off again.
Straight to Bex.
***
Jay
The hall seemed to stretch on forever as Jay ran as fast as he could, heart in his throat as he braced himself for whatever he was going to walk in on this time.
Images of Bex battered and bruised were still so fresh in his mind.
He didn’t know what he’d do if—
If he could handle—
No.
Jay skidded to a stop as he reached the elevator, pushing his way through a huddle of doctors and nurses—stepping around a puddle of blood—
Again.
“Will,” he managed to croak out as he tripped forward, watching his brother get loaded onto a gurney. His face so incredibly pale.
“We have to get him up to surgery, Jay,” Connor said, already moving toward the open elevator. He didn’t even look up, not able to take his eyes or his hands off of Will. A spray of blood covered his face and chest. He looked…
Determined.
Jay could work with determined.
He stepped back, giving them the space to load Will up. Connor spared him a single glance and Jay nodded at him.
I’m trusting you with him.
Connor nodded back, immediately returning his focus to Will as the doors closed.
Jay looked around, eyes landing on April in the middle of the still unfolding chaos and made his way over to her. Hailey followed, a solid presence at his side.
“April.” Her eyes snapped up at him as he approached and Jay caught the slight tremor of her hands. “What happened?” he asked, softening his voice.
“That guy, um, Ty,” she stammered out. “He found Bex’s room—”
“What—”
Hailey stopped him from running off. “We need to know everything,” she murmured and she was right. He fucking hated it, but she was right.
“Um, he, uh, he knocked her out, but Nat and Maggie are with her right now and I think she’s okay,” April continued. “She said something about him taking Will. I don’t know exactly what happened, but we heard the shot and then Connor was calling for help. I think—I think Mouse knocked that Ty guy out down the hall.” She jerked a nod over her shoulder. “I’m sorry, that’s—that’s all I know.”
“No, that’s—thank you.” Jay gave her shoulder a grateful squeeze and then hurried down the hall to where April said Ty was.
And where he was actually spread out on the floor, semi-conscious with a nice-sized welt already forming on his face. Mouse’s friend stood over him, pieces of a disassembled gun in his hands.
“You’re gonna want these,” he said, handing it all over to Hailey.
The stairwell door behind them burst open and the rest of his team came spilling out into the hall. Voight’s sharp eyes took in the scene in front of him and down the hall. “Halstead,” he said. “Upton.”
The what the hell? was left unspoken.
But Jay—he honestly didn’t have any answers for him.
He was done.
He just needed to be with his family.
“Sir—”
“We’ve got this, Jay,” Voight cut him off. “Go be with Bex. Upton can fill me in and I’ll check on you later.”
Jay could only nod.
He left them there and walked off toward Bex’s room. No running. He needed minute. To get himself together and figure out how he was going to face Bex and tell her…
Tell her what?
That Will was hurt? Dying?
That he’d been too late to help his siblings again?
Jay dragged a hand down his face, scrubbing the tears out of his eyes.
Footsteps came running down the hallway, slowing as they pulled up beside him and he looked over to see Hailey walking along beside him. She didn’t look at him; just kept her gaze forward as she walked in step.
Jay sniffed and let out a shaky breath.
They headed for Bex’s room.
Together.
***
Bex
“Bex. Bex!” Someone was patting at her face and Bex tried to brush them off, but she couldn’t move. Everything felt heavy. It was—something was wrong. What was—
“Will,” she gasped, forcing her eyes open and then flinching back at the harsh lights.
“He’s in good hands,” Maggie said. “You just need to stay put, okay?”
Bex didn’t think she could move even if she wanted to, but then her stomach heaved. “Gon’ be sick,” she managed to mumble before turning to the side. Natalie had the little garbage can under her lightning quick and managed to catch it all.
Pain lanced through Bex’s head as she fell back into Maggie’s arms.
“Just rest for a minute, sweetie,” Maggie said quietly, holding a hand over Bex’s eyes to help shield her from the bright overheads.
“Will,” Bex whispered. “What’s—”
“Bex!” Mouse’s voice rang out in the room and both Nat and Maggie shushed him. Bex felt him get close to her and she nudged Maggie’s hand out of the way so she could squint at him. He was knelt beside her, face stricken as he reached out before pulling his hands back. “Are you—uh, what, uh, what can I—”
“We’re sitting here for a moment,” Maggie said. “And then you’re going to help me get Bex back into bed. She’s got a bad knock on the head. Mild concussion, from the looks of it.”
“It was Ty,” Bex gritted out, grasping for Mouse’s hand. He held onto hers gently and shuffled closer. “Will went out with him and we heard a shot.” Bex was—she was so scared to even ask, but she had to know. “Was it—was it Will? Is he hurt?”
Mouse stared down at their hands for a moment before finally meeting her eyes. “He’s alive,” Mouse said softly and Bex sobbed again at that because alive…alive didn’t mean not hurt.
“Ty shot him,” Mouse continued, knowing she needed to hear it all. “But Connor was there—and he’s okay! He’s not hurt, but he was right there and he’s helping Will. Ethan and April were there too. Connor’s got him.”
Connor.
Bex couldn’t quite get her tears under control yet, but she could breathe a little easier at that. Connor had Will. No one would fight harder for him than Connor.
“We got Ty,” Mouse continued. “Ed’s watching him and I expect the team is there now so don’t worry about that.”
“…Ed?” She must have a concussion because that didn’t make a whole lot of sense.
“I’ll, uh, I’ll tell you the whole story later,” Mouse said. “The important thing is that Ty’s not going to be hurting anyone else.”
Bex hated that part of her couldn’t believe that.
She took a shaky breath and flinched as a stab of pain went through her side.
“Can we—is it okay to move her now?” Mouse asked Maggie. “This can’t be comfortable.”
“I fixed the bed,” Nat’s voice came from somewhere on the left. “We can bring her up.”
The three of them moved her as carefully as they could, but it was still an excruciating ordeal. Bex tried to muffle her cries, holding her breath despite Maggie’s repeated instructions not to.
Mouse looked as wrecked as she felt by the time they got her in place. “Where’s the doctor?” he demanded. “She needs stitches right and more scans and stuff, right? What Ty did more damage? What if—”
“We paged Dr. Fahir,” Natalie said. “She’s on her way and Bex will be looked after.” She squeezed Mouse’s arm as he dragged a hand through his hair. “You’ve got to remember to breathe too, Mouse.”
He muttered something that sounded suspiciously like not possible. Bex held out her un-splinted arm and he carefully took her hand. She pulled him closer.
“Bex—” His hoarse whisper was cut off by two more people bursting into the room.
Jay and Hailey.
“Jay,” Bex croaked out and he was instantly by her side. “Jay, he—Will—”
“I know, I know,” Jay shushed her as he leaned in and gently pressed his forehead to hers. “I just saw and he’s still alive, Bex, okay? He’s fighting. And Connor’s with him. He’s going to be okay. I know he is.”
“You don’t—”
“I do,” Jay said firmly. “Because he knows he’s not allowed to die on us or I’ll bring him back and we’ll kick his ass, right?”
“You can do that?” Bex laughed through her next sob.
“I would figure it out,” Jay vowed and Bex—she believed him.
“He’s going to be okay,” she repeated.
Jay nodded. “Or else.”

Chris
Chris and Cindy had taken their time saying good-bye, taking advantage of the relative privacy of the parking garage to sink into each other’s arms for a moment and cry for a bit.
Then all too soon they’d pulled apart because she had to get back to their kids at home and he had to get back to their kids upstairs.
Falling apart completely had to wait. Right now, they had to be the parents.
He’d taken the stairs up to Bex’s floor since the elevator was taking forever and honestly?
He could use the walk.
Every inch of his body was filled with a crackling energy that Chris had nowhere to put. He wanted to hit something. Preferably Ty’s face. He wanted to scream and yell and rage until he had nothing left.
But he couldn’t do that.
He had to be the strong one right now. The solid one. He couldn’t let himself be emptied out when the rest of them needed so much from him.
So, Chris walked up the stairs and used the time to settle himself as best he could. Almost too quickly, he reached Bex’s floor. Reaching out, he opened the door—
And walked into a scene of absolute chaos.
Doctors, nurses, security guards, and cops were all over the place. He grabbed the arm of one familiar face as they dashed by. “Ruzek, what the hell is going on?”
“Oh, shit, Herrmann.” Ruzek’s face went white and that—that was not helping Chris’s stress levels. “Uh, Ty Anderson escaped custody and came to Med,” Ruzek said, scrubbing a hand down his face.
“He what?” Chris’s stomach dropped as he tightened his grip on Ruzek’s arm.
“He overtook his guard, stole their uniform and their gun and made his way over to Med,” Ruzek spit out the facts as quick as he could which Chris would almost appreciate if each one wasn’t more horrible than the last. “We were doing a sweep, but he made it to Bex’s room—”
Chris couldn’t breathe. He couldn’t—
“Is—is Bex—”
“He knocked her out, but I think she’s okay,” Ruzek said. He bit his lip, looking back at the crowd before facing Chris again. “Ty was looking for Emery and Will distracted him somehow. Got him out of Bex’s room, but he—Ty shot Will. I don’t know how bad it is, but Connor was right there so he got help immediately. They’re taking him up to surgery now. Ty’s in custody again and they’re taking him to the station.”
“That’s—jesus, okay, thanks, Ruz.” Chris released his arm and patted his shoulder before stumbling off to Bex’s room. He needed to see her for himself. Make sure she was okay.
And then check on Will—god, Will.
And find Jay. He must be losing his mind.
Okay.
Okay.
Chris took a deep breath as he neared Bex’s room.
One thing at a time.
Check on Bex.
He entered her room and found another crowd of people there. Dr. Fahir was examining Bex’s side—Chris didn’t miss pained look Bex was trying to hide or the dried blood on the side of her head either.
Mouse stood on the other side of the bed with Jay and Hailey. Nat and Maggie and another nurse were huddled close by behind Dr. Fahir.
Bex spotted him first.
“Chris!”
“Hey, it’s okay, I’m here,” he said, moving forward quickly when it looked like she was going to try and freaking get out of the bed to get to him. “I heard some of what happened and I’m sure there’s more to fill me in on, but first let’s get you taken care of, okay, kid?”
“I’d like to take Bex for some more scans,” Dr. Fahir said, cutting off whatever protest Bex was about to make. “We need to make sure there’s nothing more serious behind the head injury and I’m worried there may have been further injury done to her ribs.”
The other nurse started unhooking things, getting the bed ready to move, and Bex looked between him, Jay, and Mouse, the fear in her eyes speaking volumes.
“I’m going with her,” Mouse said immediately, stepping closer to the bed and taking Bex’s hands.
“That’s not—” Dr. Fahir began, shaking her head, but Jay crossed his arms and leveled a look at her.
“My sister was just attacked in your hospital,” he said. “We’re going to do whatever she needs to make sure she feels safe. I don’t really give a shit about hospital protocol right now.”
Chris rubbed at his forehead before wading in to the fray. He got Jay’s frustration—he felt that same anger down to his bones.
But going on the attack when Bex needed them wasn’t going to get them anywhere.
“Please, Dr. Fahir,” Chris said. “You gotta admit these are extraordinary circumstances right now. And your scans will go better if Bex is calm, right? We’re not asking to all tromp in there with her, even though, believe me, we’d like to. But one person? To help her feel safe?”
Dr. Fahir looked at the wall of them standing there—at Bex’s hand clutching Mouse’s—and sighed. “One person,” she said. “And you can’t stay in the room for all of them, but there’s a microphone and you can keep talking to her.”
“Thank you,” Mouse said quickly, jumping on the offer. “That’s—thank you.”
It took another few minutes for them to get organized, but soon they were wheeling her away with Mouse right by her side.
Chris looked over at Jay who was staring at a patch of blood on the floor. Without a word, Chris walked over and pulled him into a hug.
This time, Jay held him back just as tight.

Connor
He couldn’t work on Will.
Connor knew that.
Even if they weren’t—even if Will wasn’t his…wasn’t his—Connor had just finished a grueling surgery of his own and had no business jumping in on another one.
But he couldn’t let Will go through this alone.
Dr. Allan stopped short when she saw him in the scrub room, following his gaze through the window where he watched the nurses getting Will prepped. She kept silent while she scrubbed in. And then sighed.
“You stay in here,” she said quietly. “And you stay quiet.”
Connor nodded tightly. Not trusting himself to say anything and grateful beyond what any words could possibly convey anyway.
He watched them work.
Flipped on the speaker so he could hear.
It was a through and through. That was good. No fragments to deal with.
Will had lost a lot of blood though. So much blood. It was sticky on Connor’s skin.
The proximity of the shot had made for a messy exit wound.
There was damage to his spleen.
Dr. Allan was still checking for more damage when Connor caught a glimpse of his own reflection in the glass. His face and chest covered in streaks of blood. Will’s blood.
Connor’s legs started to shake and he carefully lowered himself to the ground, leaning against the shelves as he sat on the floor. He closed his eyes. Listened to Dr. Allan’s calm voice as she narrated every step of the operation.
That was unusual...and completely for his benefit.
Connor didn’t know how he was going to repay such a kindness.
The door to the scrub room opened and quiet steps made their way towards him. Someone sat down on the floor next to him, taking their hand in his. Connor took a quick glimpse.
Maggie.
She stayed there with him, sitting in silence as they listened to the operation.
After a while, a long while, she finally spoke. “Connor, we should—” she began and he shook his head.
“I can’t—” Connor swallowed hard, starting again. “This is all I can do right now, Maggie. Just let me do this, please.”
He felt her staring at him for a moment before she squeezed his hand and settled back into his side. Another kindness.
Connor held himself even tighter—he couldn’t afford to let himself be undone by these bits of grace—not when Will needed him.
He didn’t know how to explain, didn’t have the words to tell Maggie that this was the only way he had to fight for Will right now.
Will—he had Connor’s heart.
And Connor had his.
So, if he could stay here and breathe and let his heart keep beating…
Will’s would keep beating too.
However long it took, Connor was going to stay here.
Keeping their hearts beating.

Mentions: Hailey Upton, Kim Burgess, Adam Reuzek, Kevin Atwater, O. A (FBI) and Maggie (FBI), Hank Voight
Warning ⚠️: mentions of rape, kidnapping, and panic attacks, PTSD (in a way).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You and Jay have been dating for a couple months now. You were the Special Agent in charge of the FBI task force that was assigned to help take down a known terrorist organization in Chicago. You knew you were in trouble when you first met Jay. The sight of him alone was enough to take your breath away, but the feelings only grew stronger the longer you both worked the task force together. Eight months later, the terrorist group that tried to destroy Chicago was taken down and you were finally approve for a permanent position as a detective with the Intelligence Unit in the CPD.
As a celebration of the end of the investigation and your transfer, all of the Intelligence Unit met at Molly’s. The patio had been pretty quiet until the group showed up, causing the other patrons to leave or go inside.
“So, what made you decide to leave the alphabet squad for Intelligence?” Adam asked, smiling goofily at you above his fifth beer in a little over an hour.
You softly rolled your eyes and leaned into Jay. “Kinda fell in love with the place.” You said, looking at Jay who was smiling down at you.
Hailey giggled. “More like fell in love with a certain detective.” Hailey teased before fake crying. “Yet it wasn’t me!”
Kim laughed and rubbed Hailey’s arm from across the table. “It’s alright Hails. She doesn’t love me either.” Kim fake comforted as everyone else laughed.
“Well, welcome to the family y/n/n (like specifically one Kevin would give). I promise these knuckle heads aren’t always like this.” Kevin said, clinking his beer with your glass.
“Thanks Kev. I really appreciate it.” You said, smiling sweetly at the giant teddy bear. “I’m honestly just glad Voight allowed this.”
“Welp. I think he fell in love with you too.” Jay said, causing everyone to laugh. “But I love you more.” Jay whispered into your ear.
“You’ve got him wrapped around your finger, that’s for sure.” Adam pointed out as everyone agreed.
“Wanna get out of here?” Jay whispered above the noise of your new found family.
“Absolutely.” You agreed, downing the rest of your drink as Jay finished off his second beer. “Well, that’s a wrap for us. I’m exhausted and I require this guy’s protection on my way home.” You joked, jabbing your thumb in Jay’s direction.
Hailey snorted, “Well, we all know you don’t need protection, but Jay does seem to keep trouble away from us and solely to him, so I guess that’s a good strategy.” Hailey joked, causing everyone else to burst out laughing.
“Ha ha. Very funny.” Jay deadpanned, helping you up and over the bench you, Jay, and Hailey were sharing.
“Good night everyone.” You said, waving as Jay led you out of the side gate and to his truck.
~~~~~~~Time Skip~~~~~~~~
The ride home was full of sexual tension to say the least. You shamelessly flirted the whole way to Jay’s apartment. You were feeling overly confident on the high of finishing a case and finally getting told you can stay with the man you’ve fallen for.
Once inside, you spent no time in taking off your jacket and shoes, pulling Jay with you as soon as he had the door locked. You haphazardly took your gun and shield off of your belt buckle as you both stumbled into Jay’s room, setting them on the nearest surface as you fumbled with each other’s belts.
Crashing onto the bed, Jay hovered over you and tucked a piece of hair behind your ear. “Are you sure your ready? I know you said you wanted to wait, and I’m all for this, but are you sure?” Jay asked, searching your eyes as he panted in an attempt to control himself.
You smiled and nodded, “Yeah. I’m sure.” You said, smiling up at Jay.
Jay nodded and leaned down, kissing you softly on the lips before continuing to undress you. Jay was slow, leaving room for you to stop when you wanted to. Once he got your pants off, he stopped when your breath quickened as he touched your underwear. “Hey. You still good?” Jay asked, leaning slightly away to give you some room.
You panted and clenched your eyes shut. “Yeah. Y-yeah. Just go on.” You muttered, nodding as you slightly shook under Jay’s grasp.
This is not how this was suppose to go. You were ready and he loves you. You trust him with your whole being. You want this. You can do this.
Jay watched you try to catch your breath, not daring to move another inch. This wasn’t the breathing of someone who was sexually aroused. You were scared. “Hey sweetheart. Open your eyes.” Jay whispered. “I need you to look at me. I won’t move until you look at me.” Jay said, trying his best to sound soothing and not intimidating.
You nodded and opened your eyes. Tears leaked from the corners as you made eye contact with Jay. He was smiling sweetly at you, being patient and loving as he waited for you to come back around to him.
“Hey you.” Jay smiled. “I’m gonna sit up now. I’m going to take the covers and cover you up. Okay?” Jay asked, making sure you nodded before he did just that. “Good job babe. I want you to get comfortable. Do you want a shirt?” Jay asked, watching as you shook under his blankets. You nodded and allowed Jay to pull one of his shirts over your head.
Once you were clothed, you realized that the shaking wasn’t from you being cold. You were having a full blown panic attack. “J-Jay.” You whimpered, reaching for the one person that made you feel safe.
“Sh Sh Sh. I’m here. I’m right here.” Jay cooed, sitting beside you and wrapping you tightly in his arms. “Breathe for me. Squeeze as hard as you need to, okay?” Jay said, turning his face into your hair as you laid on his chest with your arms wrapped around his torso. “Follow my breathing. You’re okay. We are okay. You are always safe with me. It’s alright.” Jay soothed, running a soothing hand up and down your back.
You nodded, taking a few moments to get yourself together as Jay held onto you and you held back just as tightly. You sobbed for a few moments, wetting Jay’s bare chest, but he just wanted you to be okay. Once you finally calmed down some, you leaned back to look at Jay. ”There’s something I need to tell you.” You sniffed, rubbing your eyes with the backs of your hands.
Jay nodded, leaning over to grab a tissue. He slowly wiped the smeared makeup off of your face before leaning back again. “You know, you don’t have to tell me if you aren’t ready. I can wait.” Jay reminded, tucking your hair behind your ears again.
You nodded and smiled slightly, looking down as Jay let you fiddle with his hands. “I know. It’s just. I just think you deserve to know.” You said as an explanation. “I, um, I was raped while undercover a couple years back.” You whispered, tears forming in your eyes again. “The guy. He, uh, he was suppose to be my backup. But, he was dirty and I, uh, I didn’t know. I got too close. He and a few others. They- they kidnapped me and beat me before they, you know, just before they were gonna kill me.” You stopped and shook your head. “Luckily, O.A., he and Maggie found me and saved me.” You sniffed, letting go of Jay’s hands as he reached up to wipe your face.
“Hey.” Jay whispered, pulling your chin up to meet his eyes. “I’ll wait. When your ready, we can try again, but don’t feel pressured. Okay? I’m so sorry sweet girl.” Jay said, pulling your face into his neck.
You sobbed and gripped onto Jay. Other than Maggie and O.A., the only other person you told was a counselor. You knew this would come up eventually, but you were scared. You felt like damaged goods.
“Sh Sh Sh. It’s alright.” Jay whispered. “It wasn’t your fault. You are so strong and so brave. You are not damaged goods. You hear me?” Jay said, kissing the top of your head. When you giggled, Jay was a little shocked and very confused. “Have you officially lost it?” Jay joked.
You shook your head and sat up. “I swear you’re a mind reader Halstead. I always thought that assignment left me as damaged goods and here you are telling me I’m not.” You smiled, kissing him before connecting your foreheads. “Mind reader.” You whispered, smiling as Jay’s face broke into a wide grin.

Summary: in which jay and y/n's break up leaves one more broken than the other
Warnings: Language, angst, not the happiest of endings lmaoo
Requested: Yes!! Can I request a jay Halstead imagine where he and the reader broke up and they have a kid and  he gets married to hailey not long after the break up
“Okay, Ruby’s finally gone back down. Mr Ted fell out her bed again- Wait, w-what are you doing?” Y/n froze in the threshold of their room with wide watery eyes, watching as the man she’d sworn to herself and everyone around her was the one emptying his side of the closet into a large duffle. His face was scrunched up in frustration and pain, skin red with heat and tears of unknown emotions sailed down his smooth cheeks and into the depths of his stubble. “Jay? What are you doing? Jay!” She gasped louder, taking a step forward and felt the internal knife twist in her gut upon realising the scene that had once been an exploited fear in her nightmares become her reality.
“What am I doing? What am I doing?” Jay looked up, his tongue snapping as the venom could no longer be contained from travelling through his words. “What are we doing? Why are we pretending we are okay?” Shaking his head, his fists balled up one of his ‘fancy’ shirts before angrily punching it into the bag again, again and again. With each motion, Y/n felt her body jump in fear, her stomach uneasy questioning whether she should be walking towards him or running in the opposite direction.
“It’s okay, Jay-.” Y/n attempted to comfort, now an arm length away from him and where he was hunched over leaning against the mattress with his fists. In the six years they had been together, never had she felt like she ever had to fear Jay. To her friends and family she would describe him as a teddy bear in human clothing, a man that was professionally trained in staying calm and collected. But in that moment, she hesitated to reach out for him. Her eyes zooming in on his balled fists, the stress veins popping under his skin and the mood in the air that just didn’t feel right.
“Nothing is okay. I am not okay, Y/n!” He yelled, throwing his hands up in the air and suddenly the woman in front of him was cowering away from him. The jump back caught both of them off guard. His hands fell back to his side, as they both stared in silence at one another.
She thought I was going to hit her?
I thought he was going to hit me?
Y/n’s head dropped as her hands ran through her long, dark, slightly greasy hair and tugged at it. Maybe if she pulled hard enough everything would dissolve and she’d jolt back into her bed, slightly sweaty from the nightmarish antics but in the safety of Jay’s arms. That’s where she wanted to be. That’s where she belonged, or at least she used to.
“You don’t trust me anymore, Y/n,” Jay’s voice was cold, resuming to gathering his belongings, and keeping a healthy distance between him and the mother of his child for whatever was happening he didn’t want her to feel like she was in danger. “We can’t keep pretending that this is going to get better, it’s not getting any better. I need to go before it breaks us both.” He assured as he appeared from the bathroom with his toiletries. Positioning them in his bag, he realised he had everything and began to tug at the zip.
“Maybe we can try counselling. I have the number of the guy that my sister and George went to, she said it was hard at first but now they’ve never been better!” She bargained hopefully, her hands slapping onto the top of the duffle pausing the man. She leaned over the bed from the opposite side, something stopping her from rounding the bed and standing closer to him. Their eyes met in that moment, and both could see and practically count the pieces of their soul floating around in them - broken and bruised.
“It won’t work.” Jay insisted, his eyes not leaving her’s, for if he glanced down at her lips and the way they shivered he’d be crumbling down in an instance. “I know it won’t work, you know it won’t work.”
“I don’t want you to go.” She pleaded, her hands placed on top of his, her smaller ones squeezing them gently. She didn’t want to let go of him, not physically or emotionally. Jay was all she’d ever known. He was the man that had introduced her to love in the first place, despite the couple of boyfriends she had prior to the detective. He showed her how powerful a relationship could be, how it could make her feel like she was forever floating on a cloud when he was in the room. But more importantly - most importantly - he had given her the little girl that was sound asleep a couple rooms over, who’d pushed them into parenthood in all its beauty.
“I’m sorry.” Pulling his hands away was like the penny dropping for Y/n. This was it, he’d logged out, he’d let go, he’d checked out. Y/n’s hands lingered on the bag for a moment, until she pulled them into her chest realising how cold and alien they felt without his. Jay watched as Y/n’s eyes zoned out and the wall he’d spent the six years of their relationship destroying was built back up in milliseconds. Her face was distant, eyes dull and glazed, lips parted. His chest burnt with guilt as he took in the consequences to his confession, he wanted to go over and hug her. Hold her one last time and tell her that it was all going to be okay, but he knew if he did he’d never find the nerve to leave and everything would get worse.
Following him out of the bedroom and towards the front door, Y/n felt trapped inside her own body. She was unable to communicate but every other sense felt ten times stronger. Her skin prickled as she watched Jay grab his car keys out of the poorly made dish that the pair of them had crafted during one of their first dates at a poetry class that Kim had given Jay a coupon for. However his attention was stolen by the framed photos around it, his entire body freezing. His fingers reached out for the little girl that had been captured a couple months ago with her father’s badge around her neck and his large boots swallowing both her little legs.
Ruby Halstead was as beautiful as her mother, that Jay knew from the day she was born. Although she’d been unlucky enough to adopt his personality, with her funny facial expressions and humour. At age two, Jay felt like she was already a tiny adult with the way she acted, and the thought of ever losing her made his heart burn. Letting the tip of his pointer finger run along her face, he glanced over his shoulder at the zombified woman.
“Whatever happens between us,” He breathed out, turning back to the picture. “Please never let it ever affect her.” Y/n’s inner voice scoffed humourlessly at his request, whilst externally her dead stare didn’t even shift. Did he seriously think that low of her? Had it gotten so bad between them that he’d forgotten that she would never play around with her daughter’s life, how ever fucked her’s may be. “Maybe when I have a more permanent address we can sort something out, you now, custody wise.”
How were they even having this conversation? Y/n couldn’t believe he could look her in the face with such words directed towards her. How did they end up here? She couldn’t pinpoint how it had all gone so horribly wrong.
“Y/n-.” Even the way he said her name had changed. Once upon a time, in a period of their lives that felt like a fictional fairytale in comparison to this, he’d mumble her name like it was a prayer. Every time it was followed by a small smile and a small exhale as it seemed to take the breath from his lungs in a surreal kind of way. Now though, she could feel the way it scalded his tongue. Nevertheless, the call brought Y/n back to the front of her mind, her head slightly shaking as she realised how disorientated she’d become.
“If you walk out of that door you will never walk back through it.” Her eyes pulled up and the fire lit inside of them introduced a new light into the room. Jay gulped as he realised that she was speaking from the bottom of her heart. It was his last chance, that’s how Y/n thought of it. He could come back to her, give it all one last chance. They were his family after all, weren’t they? Realising that the decision was already well and truly made in his mind, Y/n looked down at her hand and sighed at the ring that no longer glistened the same way as when she’d received it. Feeling a sob lodge in her throat, she didn’t let it out and wouldn’t whilst Jay was still in the house. Tugging the diamond decorated band off of her finger, she stared at it for a moment, lips dipping into a frown. Three years she had been waiting for them to get married, under their bed were folders of planning she had done whilst he was at work. She’d picked out a dress, a location, a cake, but now they were nothing, they meant nothing.
Holding out the jewellery piece towards Jay, the man looked down at it with sombre eyes. He remembered how he had fretted at the side of his brother, searching for the perfect ring. He wanted a piece that summed up their love, summed up how he felt about her. Something as equally beautiful and powerful as Y/n was. When he’d found the one he’d given her, all he’d ever think of whilst looking at it was the happiness that spilled over her face that night he’d gotten on one knee. That was suppose to be the start of their life together forever, how wrong they were. Nodding in gratitude, Jay placed the ring into the pocket of his jeans and unlocked the front door. The cool wind called him back into the world as a single man, a place he hoped he would find himself once again.
“For the record,” She called out when Jay had reached the bottom of their garden, his head turned in an instant. Seeing her stood there, the light from the living room lamp creating a halo around her, he felt doubts creep under his skin. “I was so so happy with you, Halstead.” Then the door was slammed shut and Jay listened to the lock click confirming that he’d done it - he was officially locked out of Y/n life. Sighing softly, his feet plodded away from the house and out of the world that they had created and shared together.
6 months later
“-And so I told him, George, it’s not like you forgot to buy milk or something, you slept with our neighbour… three times.” Amelia, Y/n’s eldest sister, complained over a cup of coffee that had certainly gone cold considering how long she’d been retelling the story of her and her husband’s latest fight. The entire time, Y/n had tried to be supportive and attentively listening to her sister’s troubles but her eyes kept flicking to the clock behind her on the wall of the cafe.
15 minutes, she thought. 15 minutes and she’d get to see her baby again.
“Are you even listening to me?” The scoff that emitted from Amelia’s lips had Y/n’s head snapping back towards her, a guilty look plastered on her face as she smiled innocently. The older sister narrowed her eyes knowing fully well the answer was ‘no’, but she equally knew that this time of the week was always the worst for the single mother of one. “Another weekend at Jay’s, huh?”
Her sister’s tone wasn’t the warmest, her eyes rolling at the mention of the detective that had quite literally broken the little sister Amelia had once known. She’d never forget the screams and cries down the phone early in the morning, as Y/n blubbered through an explanation of how the man she’d meant to be marrying walked out to start what he claimed to be ‘his own life again’. Her sister instincts had coaxed her into wanting to go find the son of a bitch and feed her thoughts into his ear until he had to call the police - but Y/n fought her on the matter. She was torn apart, broken upon repair - granted - but Jay was still Jay to her. She didn’t want any harm coming his way, nor did she want their daughter to see her aunt hating on her dad.
“Mhmm,” Y/n hummed, a small sigh breaking her lips apart as she took the final sip of her third cup of coffee. It didn’t feel right saying ‘Jay’s’, for it had been so long since their names had been broken. It was always ‘Jay and Y/n’, it was always suppose to be. “I tell you I count down the hours from the moment I drop her off on Friday, pathetic isn’t it?” It was selfish to admit - that’s why she only ever did so in her sister’s company - but she didn’t love sending Ruby off to Jay’s, despite them both coming to the agreement to do so. However back then Jay’s meant the father and daughter spending the weekend together, just them two. Now, though, that was no longer the case.
“It isn’t pathetic, it’s just sad.” Amelia corrected, not doing the best to make Y/n feel better as she sunk deeper into her chair. Her hands rubbed at her eyes, not feeling quite alive as she should. “I take it that Hilary is still in the picture.” Once again the older woman rolled her eyes. Y/n smiled sadly, although tried to make it look as warm and friendly as possible.
“Her name’s Hailey and yeah, from what I hear from Ruby.” She shrugged, hoping that it somehow made her look far less interested than she was. In reality the thought of her ex-fiancee’s blonde coworker and now girlfriend cozying up with him and their daughter kept her awake at night. Upon hearing the news a full two and a half months after their breakup, Y/n thought that it was some kind of joke. Mainly because it had come from her daughter who’d mentioned something about ‘aunt Hailey sleeping in daddy’s bed’. She hadn’t been told from the horse’s mouth so to speak, or any of her so called friends that she shared with the man like Kim or Kevin. But after digging - which mostly included speaking to the firefighters in Molly’s - it turned out that it was very much the truth and Jay’s soul searching had ended with him in the bed of Hailey Upon, who - bare in mind - Jay had reassured Y/n was no more than a good friend for three years.
“Do you think it was all planned?” Amelia suddenly asked, as her face soured at the thoughts in her head. Y/n tilted her head in confusion, begging for her to continue whatever she was thinking. “Do you think they were having some sort of affair this whole time and she asked him to leave you? I mean, what kind of man leaves his fiancee and kid and then shacks up with someone new 2 months later?” Her words began to cause an unreachable itch to form in the back of Y/n’s mind, conjuring ideas that she hadn’t even been close to having in the months she’d been mourning her relationship. She’d always assumed that something was there between the two, but never would she think that Jay would go further than having some idle feelings - at least whilst she was still lying in bed besides him.
“Why would you say that?” Y/n groaned, fingers raking through her hair in stress. Amelia spotted her mistake as the woman began zoning out, travelling to the depths of her thoughts to examine the plaguing suggestion made by her eldest sister. Sitting up straight, she reached out and grabbed Y/n’s hands.
“I’m sorry, that was just me being stupid.” She tried to reassure Y/n, thumb stroking her knuckles. “You know what I’m like, I think everyone is like George-.”
“Do you think he ever loved me?” Y/n mumbled, eyes watery as she looked up at her sister who she hadn’t been listening to. Her hands shook off Amelia’s as she was stunned by the question. She sat there wide eyed not knowing how to restart her senses and provide Y/n with an answer that prevented the forecasted spiralling. For her to ask such a question, Amelia soon realised that the so called ‘healing’ she’d undergone was a lie. She was still as broken as the day they’d broken up. Which made sense since it hadn’t been that long, but knowing that Y/n had been keeping it hidden from everyone was sickening.
“I-I think so. I mean, yes of course he did. He must have.” Again severely unhelpful words of wisdom from her sister. Looking at the clock one final time, she realised she had to go. Standing up ,her chair scraped across the floor producing a teeth clenching noise, but she didn’t even flinch. Her lips mumbled something about talking to Amelia later, and suddenly she was out the door. He must have loved her once upon a time. Walking down the street, people had to go out of their way to avoid bumping into her semi-conscious self, searching for where she’d parked her car. Did he love Hailey more?
Shaking her head when she sat in the front seat, hands gripping the wheel, Y/n knew she couldn’t be in such a state with her daughter around. She didn’t want Ruby to worry about her, not now, not ever. The aftermath of the breakup had made her realise just how much she desired never to let her daughter catch wind of the chaos occurring behind her eyes. Telling her baby that her dad would no longer be living with them without hinting that she was internally shattered was one of the hardest things she ever had to do. Rightly so, Ruby had been upset, but came around to the idea upon realising her dad would still be around. So as far as Y/n was concerned, that was the only pain Ruby would have to endure when it came to her and Jay. She would never breath a word of what happened between them no matter how old Ruby became. Getting rid of enough fog in her mind that she felt it was safe to start driving, Y/n started the engine and switched the radio on, turning it up loud enough not to give her thoughts a chance to deafen her.
When she pulled up outside of Jay’s newly rented house, she sat in her car for a moment, doing some last minute preparations. Taking deep breaths, she practiced in the mirror how she would smile when that door opened and revealed Jay or Hailey. It didn’t feel right, but it was what had to be done. After he’d moved on so quickly, there wasn’t much room for her to still be holding on to their relationship. She didn’t want them knowing that she was still such a mess, the thought made her violently nauseous. A loud knock on the passenger window sent her jumping in her seat, slapping the sun visor shut as she turned with wide eyes spotting the smile sporting detective waving at her through the closed window. Fuck sake, she thought waving back with a flavourless smile.
Getting out of the car, she didn’t even make it around the car before he was calling out for her.
“Ruby won’t be long, Hailey is just helping get her things.” Jay spoke softly, like he knew that he was dealing with an active explosive. To the mother, it felt a little too degrading like he thought she was weak and fragile, she didn’t like it. Nodding her head, she reaching the sidewalk, standing a good 2 metres away from the man that she once couldn’t bare being 2 inches away from. Clearing her throat only seemed to make the silence between them more awkward. Y/n was playing with her fingers, picking away the old nail polish wishing her daughter - who was no better than herself - would hurry up and save her from having to endure any more of this torture.
“We had kind of a big lunch, so don’t be surprised if she doesn’t want much tonight.” Jay offered, glancing over at the woman that for once in her life looked timid. Her skin seemed paler than it normally did, her body was held up without the usual confidence and power that she would usually carry. His fingers prickled to go reach out to her, to run them along her cheek and see if they still made them light up with delight. But he rejected them quickly, stuffing them into his trouser pockets as they both waited for the little girl that they shared.
“Okay.” She nodded, looking up letting her hands fall to her sides, leaning back against her parked car. The silence returned and the man wondered if this was the time for him to tell her. His senses became instantly more aware of the cold metal that currently rested on his finger. When was the right time to break it to your ex that you- before Jay could finish his thought Ruby’s voice came booming out of the house.
“Mommy, Mommy!” Her little feet tapped against the porch in her trainers as she came running down the stairs recklessly and jumped into her mother’s arms. The detective watched how just the sight of Ruby sent life shooting through Y/n’s face once again, her body crouching to catch the girl. Spinning around listening to her squeals, Jay couldn’t hide the grin on his face at the reunion. His eyes instinctively moved back to the porch where Hailey was awkwardly stood with Ruby’s backpack in hand and a posture keeping her from moving forward. Frowning, the blonde caught the man’s eye and mouthed ‘have you told her yet?’, to which he shook his head.
“Oh my- have you gotten bigger? I think you’ve gotten bigger.” Y/n grinned, poking the small dimples that marked both of Ruby’s cheeks. The girl was happy about the comment, squealing in delight as her mom returned her feet to rest back on the pavement, although her hand stuck with Y/n’s. The sensation was not one that the woman could put into words, she just wished it would never end.
“Um, Y/n do you think we could have a word?” Jay asked appearing besides them both this time with Ruby’s backpack. Taking it warily, the woman looked towards him in confusion. They only ever talked about Ruby, and that was over text. When they did speak in person it was… painful. So why would he voluntarily put both of them through it? She wondered, eyes narrowing as she switched her gaze over to a cowering Hailey.
“Are you going to tell Mommy about you two getting married?” And just like that the entire plan that Jay had derived in his head was ruined by the words of his three year old, grinning daughter. Y/n’s hand immediately released the bag, whilst the other clutched onto Ruby tighter. Her lips parting as a heartbreaking breath fell out, and the world collapsed beneath her feet. Married? She choked on the word even in her mind. They got married? Needing confirmation that what Ruby spoke was true, Y/n eyes flew to both of their hands where - sure enough - she found both of them sporting identical bands on their fingers. No, no, no, no, no. She couldn’t breath, her chest was being squeezed so tightly she was sure that the soul was being pulled out of her body through her mouth.
“We need to go.” She insisted, lips moving quickly but her mind wasn’t processing anything. It was like she was going into shut down and there was no way to stop it. Leaning down, Y/n grabbed the Paw Patrol bag back up and gently guided Ruby towards the back seat and into her car seat. Watching the way the woman’s hands shook as she opened the door and the sound of her breaths rough and uneasy, Jay didn’t know what to do. Hailey’s face was drowned in guilt as he gestured for her to go inside and that he would handle this. This was his mess, it was his responsibility.
“Y/n.” He spoke, when she’d closed the door and was trying to get passed him to get in her own seat, but he was there - every way she went he was always there blocking her.
“Move.” She ordered, voice low not wanting the toddler in the car to hear the way her voice was an open warning for what was to come if he didn’t obey. Grabbing a hold of her hands, Jay ignored her - typical. Trying to shake him off, he wouldn’t loosen his grip. Just like his scent around the house, no matter how many sheets she washed, how hard she scrubbed he just wouldn’t leave her alone. He was always there, taunting her.
“We should talk about this. I have so much to explain.” She scoffed in his face.
“Explain? Fucking hell, don’t you think it’s a little late for that?” The humourless laugh that escaped her chest was like a bullet that soured right into Jay’s heart. His defences were hopeless, as they always had been when it came to Y/n. Even though they weren’t in a romantic relationship anymore, didn’t mean he’d completely erased her from his life. What she did to him wasn’t something that went away, she was forever a weakness to him. “Now maybe you should go back in and join your wife because we are going home.” Shaking one last time, Jay’s hand fell from her wrists and she finally got into the car and was sailing down the road away from the newlyweds with a freshly broken heart.
“Mommy?” Ruby called out with a weak voice. Looking into the mirror at where she was watching her, Y/n nodded with a small gentle smile as her eyes lit up with tears. “Are you okay?” Her concern was written all over her face, clearly not understanding the nuclear bomb she’d let slip moments before. Shaking her head, Y/n blinked away the majority of the tears.
“I’m okay, baby, Don’t you worry.” Lies.
“Married? He fucking married her?” Amelia yelled into Y/n’s ear as she sat on the couch with a large glass of wine, having put Ruby to bed a couple hours prior. The large sips she was taking seemed to slowly be working at freeing up the tense muscled that embraced her entire body. This was certainly not her first glass of the dark red liquid, nor would it be her last if it all went to plan. The moment she she got a moment to herself she had to call her sister, needing to hear from someone else that the news was as crazy as it was making her feel. And without many friends, Amelia was first and only choice. “Oh you must be pissed.” The sound of her taking a large sip of her own glass of wine on the other end of the line made the younger sister smile dazed by the effects of the alcohol.
“I was engaged to him for three years and he couldn’t even commit to a flower arrangement. But now suddenly he’s in the ‘fuck it let’s get married’ mood? Hell yes I’m pissed.” She fumed, staring at the thick folder of wedding prep that was currently holding up one end of the coffee table after it broke a couple of months back. How much time she had wasted on that, for what? Knowing fully well that it was 99% her work too, other than the cake that Jay had once said ‘looked good’ and then ran out to go to work. How had she been so blind?
“Did you even know they were engaged?” Amelia asked, wondering if she had missed that information somewhere between her George rants. However hearing Y/n’s grunt of disagreement she realised it was just her sister’s shitty ex being her sister’s shitty ex. Y/n shifted so her head was resting on the arm of the sofa, her eyes staring plainly up at the ceiling feeling hot tears drip slowly down the side of her face. Wiping them away furiously, she hated that she was feeling so sad. She’d prefer just to be angry, incredibly angry sounded great right about now. But her luck seemed non-existent at this point. “I’m so sorry. Y/n/n. You don’t deserve any of this.”
Y/n was beginning to doubt that. She must have done something. Whether that was to Jay or just someone random she’d come across in life, which ultimately had fucked up her karma. Because how could she have been shot down over and over and over. She had to be getting punished for something.
Just as she was about to open her mouth and say something, there was a soft but clear knock on her front door. Freezing, she sat up and placed her wine glass onto the coffee table. Amelia must have heard it too for she was soon asking who was coming around at this time, to which Y/n didn’t have an answer for her. She hadn’t invited anyone around. Promising to call her sister back, and Amelia making her promise not to get killed by a possible murderer at her front door, they hung up the call and Y/n approached the front door. Clicking the lock, Y/n hesitantly pulled at the large slab of wood and peered into the darkness of the night. Squinting at the dramatic change in light, Y/n was suddenly wishing that it had been a murderer as she noted the glum looking Jay Halstead on her doorstep.
“Don’t tell me she’s kicked you out already. Or did you leave her? I know that’s more your style.” She snorted opening the door a little wider so he got to see her full body but not enough that he could sneak past her. Jay didn’t respond, knowing that the woman that was very clearly drunk needed to get this kind of stuff off her chest. She’d been crying, that was clear. It was sad that he knew the sight a little too well considering the end of their relationship where all she seemed to be doing was cry as Jay stressed about the unsettled war playing out inside of him.
“Can I come in?” He asked, not pushing her knowing that he had no right asking such a thing. And by the way her face turned into a look of disgust, she felt the exact same. Shaking her head as she turned around clearly needing a moment, before turning around and pointing an accusing finger at the detective.
“How dare you!” Even when buzzed with the alcohol units flowing through her veins, she was still aware of the sleeping girl in the house, keeping her voice low but sharp enough that the words cut into Jay’s chest. “You shouldn’t have come here. You’ve wasted your time, I don’t want to talk to you.” Turning around ready to go back into the house and drink another bottle of wine before passing out. But Jay had no intention of leaving things this way, he’d been sat thinking about her since she’d left earlier. Her face, her ridgid posture, her uneven breathing were playing like a never ending slideshow behind his eyes.
“What? So you are never going to speak to me again? Is that it?” His frustration surfaced, as he took a step forward grabbing ahold of her left wrist anchoring her in her spot. His touch that she once wanted to drown in, was now suffocating her silently. Turning to look at the way his large hand encircled her wrist sparked a similar frustration within her, her hand yanking back with force.
“You know what that doesn’t sound a terrible suggestion. I think I’m going to take you up on that offer.” She sassed, with a her lips pulling up into a disingenuous smile. Despite the darkness outside, the porch light allowed Jay to get a good look into the woman’s eyes and prejudge the demons that he would likely have to face the longer this conversation went on.
“I know I hurt you-.” His tone softened in an attempt to sooth her, but if anything it riled her up. Who was he to talk to her like that?
“You don’t know shit!” Throwing her hands in the air in frustration, Jay’s lips zipped shut. “I know you like to think you know everything but you don’t know the fucking half of it, Jay Halstead.” He watched as his name stung her tongue, her face contorting into a look of pain. It had been once been like a lungful of fresh air for the woman, something that would make her heart rate soar and eyes to soften. The name of her lover, her soulmate. But now it was just a reminder of all the pain she’d experienced over the last six months.
“Then tell me. Let’s go in and talk about it.”
“I told you that once you walked out you aren’t coming back in. I stand by that.” She stood strong in the doorway. Stubbornness was not a stranger to the woman, she stuck by her word, she wasn’t gonna bend just because of the beautiful green eyes begging her to. Maybe she would have considered it in the past, but she wasn’t letting him under her skin, she couldn’t.
“Oh come on.” Jay groaned, head falling back with his eyes shut, as his hands rubbed down his face. He was tired, it was one of the first things Y/n had picked out when she had gotten a good look at him. And whilst tiredness was an accessory Jay wore on a daily basis due to the nature of his job, this was different, this was exhaustion. The kind that could only be summoned by continuous nights of guilt keeping one awake and depriving them of peace.
“No.” She shook her head finally.
“Then- then can we sit on the porch. Talk out here at least?” Pointing towards the step of the porch, Y/n thought about it for a moment. Her bottom lip sucked in between her teeth as she stared between the man and where he was pointing. Did she really want to do this? Listen to him as he tried to rid himself of the blame in search of reassurance that he wasn’t the worst person in the world? “Please?” Jay’s eyes seemed to water, with the small light illuminating the tears that pooled in them.
“Ten minutes. Maximum.” She mumbled, moving away from the door, shutting it behind her to stop the cold from entering. Plopping down onto the step, she watched as Jay’s body relaxed and relief flooded his insides. A small smile pricked his lips as he realised not all hope was lost, and he moved to take a seat next to the mother of his child.
“I’ll take what I can get.” He mumbled, falling down besides her, their knees touching due to the limited space that the step provided them with. The contact was strange, Y/n had expected that she’d want to pull away and hiss at how it pained her, but instead she found the warmth of his touch like a siren calling her to back in. It took everything in her to ignore the ideas floating around, and instead turn her focus towards the rotting wood beneath her feet. There was a period of silence where neither of them knew who was going to start this whole ‘discussion’. When so much was left unsaid where did you begin? “I assume you have questions.” That was a given, Jay knew. He’d expected her to at least look at him, when this close to her she would never have looked anywhere else. Before it all went down at least.
“When did you get engaged?” She asked, chewing on the skin around her fingers not liking that all of this was happening and the buzz she’d been sporting had started to wear off. She needed the artificial confidence, she was relying on it right now to keep her sat next to the man she’d been avoiding talking to for months
“Same day we got married.” Y/n was slightly more content knowing that it hadn’t been a complete secret. If he had been hiding their engagement for a while and then gotten married maybe she’d be a little bit more mad. But the result was all the same. He’d gotten married and she wasn’t 100% sure she would know now, had it not been for her daughter that couldn’t keep a secret to save her life.
“Which was?” She pressed further, not liking how he seemed to be avoiding answering directly.
“Last Tuesday.”
“I assume it wasn’t big get together?” She knew the answer. For Jay not to invite Ruby, it had to be something small.
“Just me and her.” He responded.
“Intimiate. Cute.” Wanting to roll her eyes, she resisted the urge instead mumbling the words showing she couldn’t care less despite being the one to ask the question. However Jay didn’t hold anything back, his eyes flicking back quickly as his foot kicked a rock around.
“Don’t lie to me.” The order made Y/n look at him incredulously.
“Don’t tell me what to do.” She snapped back. “Does everyone know?”
“The unit know if that’s what you mean.” He confessed, realising he might be throwing all his friends under the bus but he didn’t entirely know the full extent yet. Nodding her head, Y/n’s gaze ran off as her thoughts consumed her mind. “The rings were kind of a give away.” Jay confessed, bringing the attention to what rested on his finger.
“Of course.” She should have known. It was all making a lot more sense. Y/n’s mind suddenly thought of her earlier conversation with her sister, and she couldn’t stop herself from searching for answers. “Were you seeing her whilst we were still together?”
“What? No. No, absolutely not.” Jay shook his head vigorously, lips parting in surprise. “Why would you even think that?”
“Six months ago I was engaged and now my fiancee is married to another woman. What do you mean why would I think that?” Incredible, she thought. She didn’t remember Jay being so… dumb. In the emotional sense at least. A few years back he could take a brief glance in her eyes and tell every thought she’d produced in the last 30 minutes. To him, she had been a book made for Kindergarteners. Now, she was written in a foreign language hidden on the top shelf of the bookcase that he simply couldn’t reach.
“Yeah but- that doesn’t have anything to do with us. I wouldn’t have done that to you, Y/n. I loved you, I still love you-.” Jay began, letting his tongue run away with him until a tut from Y/n’s mouth silenced him and his brain finally caught up with the sounds his mouth was making.
“No. We aren’t doing that. You don’t love me!” Shrugging him off, Y/n didn’t want to hear it. She didn’t want to know how everything would be okay, because he still cared for her. What was she meant to do with that? He was married now. He was most likely planning on starting a family with Hailey and he was leaving her to unravel at the thought that he still loved her? He was selfish. He was cruel. He would forever be her tormentor.
“Hailey and I just happened, after we broke up I was vulnerable. I needed her and she was there, it just felt natural being together. And I don’t want to be without her, getting married was the right choice for us.” The way he spoke was slow and soft, as though waiting for her to suddenly blow and everything around them to crumble into dust. He didn’t trust her to be calm about the situation, and rightfully so, Y/n could think of many words to describe how she was feeling and calm wasn’t in the top 1000. “I want to apologise. The way that I handled this whole thing was so wrong of me. I didn’t want to hurt you, I never did.” Jay confessed, but Y/n was having none of it. Shaking her head in amazement, sending him the fakest of grins.
“Do you even know what you are apologising for, Jay?” She didn’t know if she was angry, frustrated or just straight up sad. Everything was melting together in her head when their eyes met, he knew how she could get drawn in them when they were on her. Maybe that explained the look in them. Clearing her throat, Y/n realised this was her time to get everything off her chest. He was offering up the floor for it, she knew this was her one and only chance. “I lost everything. I lost my fiancé, my ideal happy family, I lost my friends. I haven’t heard from Kim, Kevin, Adam, any of them since we broke up. I thought they were our friends, but it turns out all these years I was just your plus one in the friend group. Do you know how alone I felt- feel? And then to find out when I was struggling to get out of bed, let alone feed myself and look after my daughter, you were out dating again? Getting engaged? Getting married? Fuck, if I didn’t have that little girl in there I don’t know where I would have ended up.”
“Don’t say that.”
“You told me not to lie to you.” She bit back. “What we had, it was good wasn’t it? Like for the last six months I have been trying to pin point the moment you stopped loving me. And I know we had trouble towards the end and I didn’t fully bounce back after having Ruby but what did I do to make you stop loving me?” She rambled, arms crossing over her chest as she noted that the temperature had dropped massively since she’d been out earlier.
“You didn’t do anything.” He rejected immediately, brows furrowing thinking that those thoughts ever passed her mind. They’d shared so many ‘I love yous’ over the years it was hard for him to comprehend that for even a second she would think he ever didn’t love her. Everyone they met always commented on the way they adored each other, Jay had been teased about it at work for years and had not let it bother him for he knew it was true. But this whole time Y/n had not? “I never stopped loving you, that was never the issue.”
“Then enlighten me, please.” She begged, eyes wide pleading for him to disclose something that would cool the scolding mark that irritated her mind every waking moment.
“It was all me. You did nothing wrong.” Holding her face in his hands, his touch was gentle as he cupped her cheeks. Feeling the heat under them, he internally smiled knowing that despite the drastic changes she somewhere inside still was very much victim to his touch. A little reminder of the love that they had created and endured over their long term relationship. Y/n tried to pull away, not believing his take on ‘it’s not you it’s me’. However Jay seemed to hold on tighter, shaking his head. “I’m being serious. I don’t know what happened but I wasn’t happy with who I was anymore. I couldn’t settle in my own skin, I felt like I was trapped and I just needed out.”
“So it wasn’t me,” Y/n sniffed, no longer ashamed to let the repressed sadness overflow onto her face. “I didn’t do anything wrong?” She questioned, feeling six months worth of confusion lift from her chest and shoulders. Hiding her face in her heads, she soon felt Jay wrap his arm around her shoulders, pulling her in close with his forehead pressed against the side of her head where he let out a small breath of air, feeling his air ways tighten and eyes water. He’d let her suffer, simmer in the unknown all alone, he was a terrible person. God, he knew it. Seeing her break wasn’t a common sight, and that ripped through him over and over as he inhaled the same perfume she’d been wearing since they started dating.
“I couldn’t have asked to be loved by a better woman than you, Y/n Y/l/n,” He assured with a low voice, pressing is lips against the top of her head, lips lingering as he looked up to the stars and his tears began to stroll down his cheeks. “You are beautiful, inside and out. And I am sorry that for even a moment I ever treated you like you weren’t. But that’s on me, not you.” Pressing a second, then a third kiss on her head. The both just sat there crying whilst the man cradled the woman, knowing that he couldn’t let go of her just yet. Despite thinking about his wife sat at home waiting for him, he was instinctively pulled back to Y/n every time.
“I didn’t think that there would ever be a time after you Jay. I don’t know what I’m suppose to do now.” Her admission was one the man hadn’t expected when the conversation first started. Gently moving her hair from her face to get a full look at her face, his bottom lip trembled with sadness knowing all the responsibility for it was his own.
“You’ll find someone,” He nodded with a reassuring smile, although sadness was all that Y/n could see. “Someone far better than me who will treat you like you should have been treated. I promise you this world has a lot more to offer than what I was able to give you.” Both of them cracked the smallest smiles at one another, as it finally dawned on the pair that this was actually it. There had been a couple of fights that they had in the past that had lead them to having a short break, normally it was no longer than a week and it’d end with both of them apologising profusely and realising how stupid the entire ‘fight’ had been. However this time it felt far more permeant, for it was. Jay was married, it still didn’t feel right to admit but Y/n knew she couldn’t hide from the truth. There was no going back to how it was, never again.
Taking his hands off his face, she kept them in her own looking down at them and stopping her gaze on the thick metal ring that was a constant reminder of the blonde that was back home waiting for him. Jay watched hesitantly, not sure what was happening as his hands were being comfortably held in a way only Y/n could hold them. It reminded him of the early days of their relationship, where they’d lay in bed late at night, her tucked in his sides and she would trace the patterns of her palms telling him what each like was and what it meant for his future. Sometimes he’d find it difficult to listen for the sight of her stole his attention every time. She was so beautiful, she still was. There was no other woman like Y/n Y/l/n he’d decided long ago.
“You should probably get back. She must be worried.” Y/n whispered, gently placing Jay’s hands back onto his knees. They both turned back to face the night and away form each other, neither of them making a move to get up or distance themselves. They knew this wasn’t ‘goodbye’, the little girl that was sound asleep in the house assured that much. They would be in one another’s life for the rest of time, perhaps why it was that much harder to process. They didn’t know how to me ‘Jay’ and ‘Y/n’ for they had always been ‘Jay and Y/n’. “I’m-,” Y/n broke the silence, stopping as she choked on her words. Eyes not moving from looking ahead, despite Jay turning to look at her again. “I’m happy that you are happy.” She finally got out, glancing over at him for a moment she flashed him a miniature sad but honest and genuine smile. “I’m happy that she makes you happy.”
And without giving time Jay to respond, Y/n was on her feet walking back towards the door. Giving him one final look from where he sat, she walked back inside wordlessly and locked the door behind her, Jay listening to the lock click shut. It was done, he decided, this was her goodbye.

Desperation. That was the only emotion Jay was feeling, arriving on scene after an active shooter situation was called. The only thing he never expected was Silvie Brett -Y/N’s partner and best friend- being pulled by Chief Boden. He frantically looked around trying to spot you, but unfortunately there wasn’t a sign of you there. He knew right then that the promise you made each other of always coming home had been broken. Now there he was pacing right beside Boden, Casey -with a crying Silvie pulled into his side-, and pretty much everyone from intelligence, waiting. And right on his right side was Hailey -your big sister- with her gaze pinned on the large oil pipe, zoning out. It was supposed to be an easy call, go in, work and get out. But I guess nothing is as easy at it seems. The shooter had been apprehended, now it was the waiting on your news what worried everyone.
“C’mon, c’mon. What’s taking so long?” Jay paced and muttered anxiously. Not having a single detail or information about your condition or location was driving him insane. “Kelly, got an update?” Boden talked through the radio after looking at the people around him, praying that they had found you alive.
“Negative Chief. I- I don’t. I’m coming out now” not long after that Kelly walked to the group and his look said a hundred words. He shook his head slightly looking at Boden. That’s all it took for Hailey to break, knees in the ground sobbing-, Brett was clinging to Casey who was looking at the ground where you had fallen. Jay shook his head with tears in his eyes,
“NO, no, no. You’re lying, I don’t- I won’t leave this place until a get her back!” Jay screamed moving to get closer to the pipe hole. If they were giving up, he wasn’t even close. Kelly, Boden and Voight got in front of him blocking his path, they knew how much you meant to him -hell how much you meant to everyone-. “Kid- kid. Listen to me… I’m sorry Jay but…” Hank trailed without having the courage to finish that sentence.
“I- I’m not giving up. There is no body, no evidence of her being dead” Jay said trying to seem strong, but his voice and his eyes betraying him, there was no way he could fool anyone with his act. “The pipe is to deep, the oil, the blood lose- there is no possibility of surviving that… I’m sorry…” Boden commented with a soft voice and his brave expression about to break.
“No- no she promised. She promised to come back to me. Hank please…” finally crying gripping on to Hank begging -because he was sure about to break-
“Please you need to get her back. She- she’s not supposed to go before me. I’m her older sister, it was supposed to be me first” that was Hailey talking in between sobs.
“W-We can’t, there- there’s nothing else we can do” gripping on to both Jay and Hailey’s shoulders looking into their eyes -they could hear the pain in Hank’s voice and in his face- because there was no denying that if someone didn’t deserve this, was you. With that Jay sat on the ground, taking a moment to grasp the fact that he wouldn’t have the opportunity to say goodbye, not even to give you a proper burial. It wasn’t long before having to go clean out your locker -Hailey promising Jay to stay and be there when they recovered your body- because they had to.
Arriving at the 51 everything felt heavy, the air, the place and the memories. Opening your locker, he couldn’t help but feel a pan on his heart looking at all the polaroid’s you had taped to your locker door. Some were from when Hailey and you were kids, some with the 51, a lot with Silvie and the ones with Jay -that had the date and a painted heart on them- those made him feel like he was drowning. In the very middle of everything there was a box -he recognized that box- he opened it reviling a necklace he had given you the day you two met -unknown to you he had taken a picture when you were looking over the pier and wrote the date and “pretty sure I just met the love of my life today” in the bottom- that polaroid lingered in his locker door at the district.
“You promised…” he sat down still holding you necklace in his hands and putting it on him, remembering the last conversation you had,
Walking towards the kitchen Jay watched as you were singing, dancing, and cooking at the same time. Leaning on the door frame he admired the beautiful woman who one day he would get the chance to call his wife…mother of his kids. He couldn’t wait. The song “shut up and dance” came through the speaker, which made you started dancing harder and singing louder.
“You know we have neighbors, right?” he said chuckling when he saw you jump a bit, you giggle when you turn around to meet his eyes. You shrugged your shoulders and started dancing towards him, making him laugh harder,
“Don’t you dare look back, just keep your eyes on me, I say you’re holding back she said shut up and dance with me…” getting a hold of his hands you pulled him to dance with you, both laughing and smiling -like a dream- twirling you around “this woman is my destiny, she said uh uh…” Jay continued then picking you up, you wrapping your legs around his waist laughing he smiled and gave you a kiss. It felt like floating,
“You promise to come home?” “Always”
You woke up feeling like your lungs were on fire, you didn’t know where you were or what had happened, then you remembered being shot and just… falling. It was a big pipe hole compared to you -you’re a small gal- to say the least, you could move freely but you couldn’t see anything. Wasn’t this supposed to be an oil pipe- you thought - unknown to anyone even yourself that pipe wasn’t full of oil anymore, it had filled itself with water with the storm that had hit Chicago the past few days. Everything hurt and you were pretty sure that you would have had to drown by now -but by some miracle you were still breathing barely-. You looked around you seeing some light coming through what you assumed was an exit -it couldn’t be sun, you were pretty sure it had been hours-, so you slowly moved towards it. You could feel something leaking through your paramedic shirt and down your leg mixing with the water you were soaked in. Right, I’m shot -you thought-. Crawling out you had to look around to figure how much time you had been in there, you got the call at 5pm and now it was dark, maybe 8pm, pretty accurate -you thought-. Looking at the distance you could distinguish some police lights and a couple of people, some fire trucks and ambulance -your ambulance-. They hadn’t left, that made you breath a laugh and cry, they were still there, looking for you.
Getting closer you barely heard a set of familiar voices,
“It’s been over 3 hours, I- I’m starting to think that she won’t be there” “I just want her here. She’s the only family I have left” Silvie and Hailey were squeezing each other’s hands with a lost gaze on the pipe hole -were everyone was still working on going down-. Just then a phone rang, “It’s Voight…” “Pick it up”. Turning around and going to answer the phone Hailey stopped death in her tracks, smacking Silvie’s arm -making her turn around- as if to make sure she wasn’t hallucinating her little sister in front of her. “Y/N!” Hailey’s scream got everyone’s attention looking at you with relieved, yet surprised looks. How could you have survived? How was that humanly possible? Just then your eyes turned to the back of your head, and everything went black.
Jay had almost died, when he heard two of the most terrifying and reliving words coming out of Hailey’s mouth, “She’s alive”. After that everything was a blur, he had driven to Med in record speed, every detail of your condition unknown, he was terrified. And now a couple of hours later you were in the ICU, with Hailey grabbing your right hand and Jay your left hand,
“I thought she wasn’t going to make it…” Jay whispered so he could be heard just by your sister. “Let’s not even say it, please…” Hailey paused taking a breath before continuing. “I thought… there I go again, losing the o-only person who means everything to me. I don’t even know why I’m crying she’s right here, with me, with us” “Yeah… I know the feeling…” just then you opened your eyes, taking in your surroundings, you felt something weighting your hands, so your instinct was to squeeze. Hailey and Jay almost went jumped through the roof when they felt your hand squeeze theirs, looking into their eyes you smile a little,
“I have risen from the dead, my dear friends.” -you had a dark humor sometimes- “Don’t… shut the fuck up, you bitch” Hailey responded in the middle of chuckles which made you wink at her and smile. Now looking at Jay you couldn’t help but want to cry,
“You almost gave me a heart attack, you know that?” “…I know… I’m sorry” “Never. Again. You are not allowed to be in this hospital ever again. And you are not allowed to die on me.” Jay said leaning down to look directly in your eyes, and you could see the desperation on his green orbs. You both knew you couldn’t promise each other such things, even more with your jobs, but you nodded just to give him a peace of mind. The rest of the night was spend by Jay keeping you close to him, with the unsettling feeling of fear- fear of losing you- and you could only imagine the hell he went through.
It had been a couple of days since the incident. You were on strict bed rest and Jay made sure you were following orders, so he took a couple of weeks on furlough. Now you were in bed as per usual, Jay hugging your waist from behind with his face in the crock of your neck, and being careful not to touch your stitches, but you couldn’t sleep anymore, so carefully and silently you got out of Jay’s grasp and went to the living room where your bag was. Unknown to Jay, in it was your will, -yes, the will you were supposed to make way before entering at the 51- but until now you felt like it didn’t made a difference.
30 minutes into writing you heard Jay’s footsteps coming towards the bar table on your kitchen. You felt him hug your waist -he did that a lot- from behind you and kiss your neck.
“I think you are supposed to be on bed rest missy” with that sexy tired voice and you were sure his hair looked hotter, you chuckled turning your head and giving him a kiss, the both of you smiling into it -just being grateful for life essentially-.
“I just needed to finish this” “What’s that?” he peeked forward getting a look at the papers, furrowing his eyebrows and looking back at you. “A will? W-why?” he turned the stool so that you were looking up at him. You cupped his cheeks giving him a soothing smile,
“I had to get it done a long time ago. Didn’t think a needed it until- until you know…” your smile faded remembering the scary moments. Jay took the papers from your hands putting them on the bar table before looking into your eyes and turning his head to the side avoiding your gaze,
“Let’s not…I don’t want to talk about that.” “…okay…” he just nodded returning his gaze to you and giving you a small smile before reaching for the necklace in his neck and putting it on you giving it a kiss before pecking your lips. “You know this is my good luck charms, pretty sure that’s why it happened, you know, before I didn’t have it on me” Jay groaned rolling his eyes. Before he proceeded to pick you up from the stool -you looking like a koala- and walking back to your bedroom.
“Let’s not talk, I just wanna hold my baby girl and pretend the world doesn’t exist” he muttered while carefully placing you on the bed and wrapping an arm around you, you instantly putting your head on his chest.
“I’ll always come home” “Like hell, you fucking better” laughing the both of you shared a sweet kiss and sleep took over you little household.

I’m just going to say it now because it’s been bouncing around my brain like the standby screen of a dvd player since the serial killer storyline was introduced and the trailer for next episode only added fuel to the fire. What if Hailey leaves because she’s targeted by the killer? Not like killed off or anything, but maybe injured out?
In my head this is how 11x12 would go:
- It opens to Hailey looking at a text from Jay. Crucially, she is only looking at the preview, she doesn’t actually open the message. What we can see says he’s back in the city and that they need to figure out him getting his stuff back. She’s just about to open it and respond when she gets the call about the case.
- Case gets worked as usual, Jay is put to one side for the duration until close to the end where they have a suspect and Hailey recognises him as someone Jay knows, who knew that the two of them were together but wouldn’t have known they got divorced. She tells everyone that he’s back and someone else (Kev, but doesn’t actually matter who) calls him to see what he knows about the guy. Jay gives them something (likely off screen) but they don’t have enough to arrest the guy. Team agrees to take a breather and explore it more in the morning.
- Episode ends with Hailey getting out her car at home, finally opening Jay’s text. She dials his number ready to talk, when she’s hit over the head from behind and knocked out.
- 11x13 would pick up with her waking up and the offender trying to get one last kill in. One final pair of people who love each other. He makes her call Jay, and makes her lie to him and arrange a meeting.
- Cut to intelligence, someone notices Hailey hasn’t come in yet and tries calling her. She obviously doesn’t answer so someone calls Jay, who is on his way to meet up with her. Someone else finds out that she got taken the night before, they tell Jay he needs to come in to help them find her.
- Flicks between Hailey and the team trying to find her for most of the episode, about 2/3s of the way through they make it to her in the nick of time and the last thing she sees before she passes out is Jay.
- She wakes up in the hospital with him sat beside her bed. He explains that he’d been allowed to stay as she never changed her emergency contact or nominated next of kin information. She can tell she’s in worse shape than he is letting on when the doctor comes in and confirms she’s not going to be able to be a cop any more because of the injuries she sustained.
- Jay apologises, offers to help her through everything. The man grovels, and explains that he thought she wanted nothing to do with him but he still should have tried harder. Voight comes to see her later and offers her a desk role in the unit (similar to what Mouse did), then Petrovic visits and says she has been offered a place on a profiler training course thanks to their work on the case but she wants Hailey to take it instead. She thanks Hailey and says she might not have been right about everything after all, and it was okay to rely on other people sometimes and let them help you. Camera pans to Jay in the waiting room when she says this.
- Hailey tells Jay about both offers, and that the course is outside Chicago. He says it’s not far from where he’s going to be posted training recruits. Episode ends.
Anyway, it’s almost definitely not going to happen like that, but a girl can dream.

Outside Income Chapter 1
When Intelligence gets pulled in to solve a case that another unit can't seem to close, evidence quickly begins to suggest that the gang they're investigating has man on the inside. But what shouldn't be a big deal, Intelligence is known for rooting out corruption, quickly becomes a very big deal when something goes very, very wrong.
Read on AO3 here.
“Alright people.” Voight says, stepping into the bullpen accompanied by a wiry man with dark hair. “This is Detective Jason Marston from the gang unit. He’s been rolling a case against the forty-eight street riders for the last two years. The last week, bodies have been dropping and the Ivory Tower wants them shut down yesterday so we’ve been asked to assist.”
“I appreciate a fresh set of eyes on this.” Marston says. “They’ve been ahead of us at every turn.”
“Sounds like you have a leak.” Jay comments.
“Another reason the big wigs want us on this.” Voight says. “We’ve got a rep for rooting out corruption. They’re hoping we can live up to it.”
“What’s the plan?” Adam asks. “We gonna try a buy, bust?”
“Gang unit has tried that.” Voight says, shaking his head. “Either they get tipped to the identity of the officer making the sale and refuse to deal or the gang uses it as a chance to get rid of low hanging fruit and the punk they bring in doesn’t know anything.”
“So we need to get in closer.” Hailey says.
“And it stays in house.” Jay adds.
“Details of the op don’t leave this room.” Voight confirms. “Marston, I’m going to keep you out of the loop on the chance that they’ve got a line on your cellphone.”
“I’ve been careful about that.” Marston says, before sighing. “But it makes as much sense as one of my guys being dirty.”
“We want this to succeed, everyone involved with previous operations gets cut out.” Voight says. “We’ll keep you informed, after the fact.”
He receives a nod and the man hands over the file box with his case files and then disappears back down the stairs. Only once he’s gone does Voight speak again.
“Okay.” he says, looking around. “We’re going to pull a rip. Let’s find out where these people are keeping their drugs so that we can pull the floor out from under them.”
“Who’s going in as a supplier?”
“Atwater, you and Kim look over these files and figure that out. See if you can get on read on which of us they’d be most likely to trust. The rest of you work on digging out that stash house.”
Files are divvied up and the team settles in to work. It takes a few hours but Jay and Hailey are able to identify a mid-level player.
“Gang unit hasn’t even gotten close to a stash house in over a year.” Jay explains as they present it to Voight. “None of the ones they had identified before that are still active. But they do have this guy.”
“Niko Eskalov.” Hailey continues. “We sit on this guy, he’s going to lead us to a stash house. But boss, Gang tried tailing mid- level guys to find stash houses but their officers got made, every single time.”
“Alright,” Voight agrees. “Let’s set up surveillance. I’ll set up some different vehicles. If there’s a mole, they know Intelligence has picked this up. They may have given the gang descriptions of us and our vehicles.”
“What if the leak is somewhere higher up?” Jay asks. “You request new vehicles, it goes across their desk and the descriptions get to the gang anyway.”
“You got a better suggestion?”
“Get approval for us to use vehicles from the auction stock.” Jay says. “We’ll keep our own records of what cars we use and then file them later.”
“Higher ups could still get access to the information.” Hailey says. “Look into which ones are missing.”
“Take a lot more time though.” Jay says. “And If they have to go out of their way to get the information then we can use that to figure out who they are.”
“We’ll give it a shot.” Voight says, reaching for his phone. “Jay’s right. Even if it doesn’t get us a stash house, we might identify the mole that way.”
Jay nods.
“I’ll take first shift.” he volunteers.
“I’ll go with him.” Hailey is quick to add.
“Head for the auction lot.” Voight tells them. “I should have things squared away with the brass by the time you get there.”
It takes them less than two days to track Niko back to a stash house.
Which unfortunately proves their theory that a mole connected to the department is the reason for the Rider’s ability to keep from getting caught.
If it was just because the crew is careful they never would have got here this quickly. As it is, without the mole tipping them off, they’d never seen Intelligence coming.
The team is staged five minutes away, waiting for the full cover of darkness to settle in and allow them to pull off the rip.
They’re all wearing blackout gear, face coverings pulled down around their necks while they wait.
“Two days has got to be a record, right?” Adam says. “For Intelligence to clean up somebody else’s mess.”
“Especially with these guys working on it for two years.” Kevin agrees.
“Job’s not done yet.” Jay says, shaking his head as he looks over their breech plan for the twelfth time. “The rip gets us in but we’ve still got to close the deal. And then figure out where these bastards are getting their information.”
“Halstead’s right.” Voight adds. “Stay focused. We’ve still got work to do.”
The officers nod, suitably chastened.
Ten minutes later, the last glimmers of sunlight disappear on the horizon and they pull out of the parking garage.
Jay hits the front with Hailey and Kim while Voight takes the back with Antonio, Adam and Kevin. They corral everyone into one room in the basement, forcing them to their knees at gunpoint.
Adam and Kim fall back, collecting all of the drugs and piling bricks into duffel bags while the others cover the criminals.
Within minutes, bags are being thrown over shoulders and then the team is backing out, Jay throwing a smoke grenade to cover their retreat.
Adrenaline levels are high as the team piles back into the trucks with whoops and cheers.
Voight is driving, having left at the front of the pack to get the engine running and Jay can see him shaking his head as he leans against the back windows in the bed of the truck.
And yeah, maybe they’re acting like children but robbing drug dealers is one of the funnest parts of their jobs.
And with the hard work starting up again first thing in the morning he figures they might as well enjoy it.

Rich Hailey Headcanon ask sort of: Tell us a bit more about Hailey's brothers? And what Hailey's relationship with them was like when they were kids versus now?
Here you go Nonny! Enjoy.

Pat is the oldest Upton sibling. He was basically Hailey’s hero growing up. At least until his 18th birthday. Hailey and Paul were 10 and the went to go and wake him up that day, only to find his room completely emptied out. Pat had always been their biggest protector against their father, so as much as Hailey understood the need to leave as she got older, it still hurt.
He reached out when he could, emails here and there, but they were few and far between lest their father find out.
He eventually used some of the money from his trust to move to England. He’d gotten into law school there. It’s where he stayed too. He got a job at a fancy law firm in London. Met a man he loved and eventually married.
Once Ty and Hailey and Paul came into their own inheritance he reached out again. Just to touch base see if they wanted and if it was safe to reconnect. It took some time, there were still some hurt feelings and the distance didn’t make things any easier. But Hailey knows that all she ever needs to do is tell Pat she needs him and he’ll be there, just like he always was when she was little.
Ty
Hailey hasn’t spoken to her middle brother in years. He was kind of like a tumbleweed. Never in one place for long, and going where ever he pleased. He didn’t want much to do with his family, having done the exact same thing that Pat had, and leaving in the dead of night as soon as he turned 18. He didn’t have a job, at least not as far as Hailey could tell, but then again he didn’t really need one.
Ty was the prankster and when they were kids his pranks were genuinely funny. Then, after Pat left, so did the funny. The pranks became mean, bordering on cruel. Like Ty wanted everyone else to feel what he was. The sad thing is, Hailey and Paul, the oft recipients of his pranks, already did.
Not long after Hailey became a cop, she was able to use her new resources to track him down. He only lived in Montana. Compared to Pat and Paul he was practically next door. But still all her letters (yes she sent him letters okay, Jay’s not the only one who’s old fashioned) went unanswered. Worse they were returned to sender, with Ty’s familiar messy scrawl having written the words across the envelope.
Eventually, after enough letters that he probably could have had her charged with stalking Ty wrote back. It was only five words: Leave me the hell alone. None of them had reached out since.
Paul
Paul is Hailey’s twin. She is ten minutes older than him, and they remain to this day the most important ten minutes of her life. They are pretty much each other’s mirror, almost literally. Hailey is left handed, Paul is a rightly. She’s is short, he’s 6’3”. Her dimple is on her right cheek, his is on the left. Paul even has Situs Inversus (where all his major organs in the torso sit mirrored to where they should). It’s super weird.
They’ve always been the closest of all the Upton siblings and that remains to this day. They try and talk to each other at least once a week. He’s the only one of her brothers that’s met Jay (don’t worry Paul approves). And while Hailey won’t say they have twin telepathy or anything like that, whenever she gets the strangest urges to call him, it’s usually just what he needs to get through a rough day, and the reverse is true too.
Paul joined the air force right out of high school. He’s been stationed all over the place but is currently stationed on Oahu. He knows how much Hailey loves the beach, so he’s always sure to send her pics of the sand and surf whenever he knows Chicago is going through a snowstorm or wicked cold snap. Her response is always the same, but it always makes him snicker when that middle finger emoji comes through.

i find it funny that it is said that hailey was under vo*ght's control (8x16 - 9x04) during the manipulation in 8x16 yes with the rest not because she made her own personal decisions when she lied to jay and kim (8x16 - 9x04) and as she said in 9x07 nobody controlled her... she did what she could live with best because vo*ght didn't force her to lie it was her own decision whether she is right everyone has to decide for themselves... but that then hailey fans like jay for what he did in 9x09 to vo*ght to protect hailey... but then hate jay in the finale (9x22) for making his own decisions as well as in 9x09 and hailey not clear with that comes because he is his own decision just his no one else controls him neither hailey nor vo*ght.. he was loyal to everything and everyone the entire season and then is hated for being loyal although hailey was from 8x16 - 9x04 too but she's celebrated for it even when she's lying... and if jay's decisions end up putting him behind bars or in the ground, it's still his decision
I feel like this is a 2 part question, so I'll answer it like that:
Who is to blame for the Roy situation?
As a major Hailey Upton fan, I will say that Hailey is not entirely innocent for what happened during the Roy Walton case. Yes, she decided to go to the warehouse. Yes, she decided to stay at the warehouse even though Voight told her repeatedly to leave. But if you think about it, the root factor for all her decisions is Hank Voight. She went to the warehouse cause she knew Voight was up to something. She probably knew what she was walking into when she got to the warehouse, but she still stayed and tried to convince Voight to bring Roy in because that was the right thing to do. Many fans complain that Hailey should have left the warehouse when Voight told her to go, and things would have ended a lot easier, but that would have been cowardly. Hailey saw Voight beating the crap out of Roy, and she knew she couldn't just stand and watch. She knew that killing Roy would not solve any problems, only create more, so she pleaded with Voight to bring Roy in. And as a Hailey fan, I am proud of her for standing her ground.
But Voight used her vulnerability and firmness to manipulate her into a situation she never wanted to be part of. He convinced Hailey that they would bring Roy in but then decided to give Roy easy access to his gun, which would then force Hailey to shoot. And even in a frazzled state, Hailey still wanted to call an ambo and stop the bleeding, but Voight stopped her. Voight prevented her from doing the right thing and used her vulnerability to control her and the situation.
And you are right; Hailey was the one that lied to Jay. She was the one that hid this big secret from her fiance. But if you rewatch 9x03, in the scene where Voight talked to Hailey about the Feds' investigation, he specifically says that it's important that the secret stays between them. The less people that know that better. So Voight did push her to keep the secret. Hailey wanted to tell Jay, Kim, and the rest of the unit what had happened. In fact, in 9x01, she was willing to tell the whole world the truth just to save a civilian's life, but she didn't because Voight pushed her not to.
At the end of the day, Hailey is an adult, an experienced cop. She made those decisions, and she has to live with them. But she wouldn't have had to make those decisions if Voight had just played by the rules from the beginning.
If Hailey can make her own decisions in 8x16, shouldn't Jay as well in 9x22?
At the end of the day, I have to ask Jay, "have you not learned anything after the Roy/North stuff"? Is Jay willing to risk his entire life and career for a CI? The conversation Jay and Hailey had at the district was so on-point. They both made good points. Jay claimed they should try to help Anna however they could since she had dedicated her entire life to this case. He claimed that the team should protect Anna just like he protected Hailey during the Roy mess. And although what he is saying is fair, what Hailey tells him is even more meaningful. Yes, they had lied and buried evidence to protect Hailey, but it also cost them a lot of things. There was tension within the unit. There was tension between Voight and Halstead. Hailey and Jay's relationship almost fell apart. The unit was almost disbanded, and Hailey, Jay, and Voight almost went to prison. Even though there was a happy ending, much of the journey was chaotic and stressful for all of them. One lie, one cover-up, almost led to the end of Intelligence. They were lucky, but they might not be again. Hailey doesn't want to go through that again. She has learned her lesson and has made it clear what kind of cop she wants to be. I don't hate Jay for what he did. He was trying to help someone who had been loyal to the team for months. But is it worth it? Is he willing to put everything on the line just to protect a CI?

Hiiii!
Wanted to ask what would your OCs do if they were trapped in a haunted mansion?
oohhoho
jay, adrian, and lucien would stick together no matter what. lucien would get scared very easily, jay would get startled pretty easily, they'd all have their guard up but they'd probably end up having fun anyway
petals would hate it so bad, he does not want to be here he is clawing at the doors demanding to be let out, if someone scares him he'll chase them down
darkjay and whit stick together, whit is startled very easily and reacts with violence which darkjay finds hilarious. whit just wants to get out of here but darkjay wants to see if they can summon ghosts or something
rupee and iden stay together, iden's not a fan of jumpscares but rupee doesn't really find it scary at all, just amusing. baron probably tags along with them but eventually goes off to try and find everyone else, he also doesn't scare easily
mixtape, synth, and c.c. stay as a group, probably with mckenzie as well. mixtape can't handle jumpscares at all, c.c. laughs every time they're scared, synth tells off c.c. for being mean. mckenzie is the only one who knows where they're supposed to be going
verne wanders off from the group to investigate some random part of the decor he found interesting and gets lost
rev probably ends up alone but doesn't scare easy and is just trying to find everyone so they don't leave people behind
record is absolutely terrified, she freezes in place early on and gets separated from the group but ends up catching up to whit and darkjay after a while
hailey's having the time of her life, reveling in the dark and spooky and all that. she probably has to be dragged out once they find the exit and track everyone down

One where Y/N is Jay’s Daughter and she get’s kidnapped and her has to find her
A/N: I hope everyone enjoys this ! If you like my work please comment like and reblog it means a lot to see interaction on my work.
Jay’s POV
“Why you smiling so much” Hailey asked
I looked up at Hailey and gave a little laugh I didn’t even realize I was smiling so much.
“Yeah I was talking to Y/N and she’s coming down from LA to visit me” I said
“Wow that’s awesome I know it’s been a while since you last seen her” Hailey said
“Yeah it’s been over a year you know with the pandemic and her being away at college it’s been hard for her to come back home and now that’s she going to be here I was thinking now is a perfect time as any to tell her were getting married and want to elope” I said
“I love that Idea and we can’t get married without her being there,” Hailey said, smiling up at me and kissing me softly on the lips.
Suddenly the moment was interrupted by both our phones going off and I groaned dramatically making her laugh.
We looked down at our phones and of course it was work saying we caught a case.
“Come on let’s head out” I said
The ride over to the precinct was quiet considering it was early in the morning. Hailey broke the silence between us
“So I totally forgot to ask when is Y/N coming in and how long is she staying ” Hailey asked
“She’s flying down this weekend and staying a week and she’ll be excited about being a part of the wedding I know it will mean a lot to her” I said
“I know and I couldn’t have done it without her being there it wouldn’t have been right”  She said smiling over at me
“ I agree” I said
We reached the district at the point and we got out and made our way in. Everyone was piling in.
“So what do we got” Adam said sitting down at his desk. Everyone at this point was gathered around and sitting at their desk.
“Alright everyone listen up we got something big today” Voight said
He tapped a picture to the white board and it was hard to see but when he moved away I was taken back to see who it was.
It was a picture of Y/N’s mom. She was never a part of her life  and Y/N didn’t even know what she looked like.
We were teens when we had her I was barely sixteen and her mom was a year older than me. She left about a month after Y/N was born saying she couldn’t handle it and wasn’t ready.
I tried to keep in touch with Emma but she never wanted any part of it and it broke my heart. I think I always had some resentment towards her. The fact she could just leave and never look back I  will never understand.
Seeing her picture on the wall up there I didn’t know if she was alive or dead and I couldn’t process how I felt at the moment.
“Emma what is she doing up there is she okay” I asked
“Wait you know her” Voight asked
“Yeah she’s Y/N’s mom” I said
“Well Jay I’m sorry to be the one to tell you this but Emma died at 11pm last night from a home break in ” Voight said being short on the details.
“Why is it random and if it’s a random break in why are we working this case” I asked, confused there were things that weren’t lining up.
“Hey Jay maybe we should take in private about this sense this case became personal” Voight said
“Nah I’m good we didn’t have a relationship she left when Y/N was a month old I tried reaching out to her a few times when Y/N was little to get her to be a part of her life but she never made any contact so I let it go” I said
“Still Jay you knew her are you gonna be okay” Kim asked
“I’m good on this so what happened” I asked
“Emma was working as a CI with the homicide division she was helping them work a case about the murder of a drug dealer she was working with a local gang but apparently a couple months ago she got clean and wanted out of that life” Voight said
“So someone must have made her then.” Atwater said
“Not possible she was living out a safe house only the detectives working this case knew where she was” Voight said
“So we got dirty cops but why would they turn on her” Adam said
“We don’t know but if this case makes it out to the news then it’s going to turn bad so the Brass is all over this and wants us to handle this quietly and fast so let’s get to work” Voight said
“Where do you want us to start” Hailey said
“Jay and Hailey go talk to the detectives involved with her case Kevin and Kim go take a look at the house and Adam you do a deep dive on the vic let’s get to work” Voight said
Me and Hailey got our Jackets and walked out. I didn’t really say i mean there wasn’t much to say also I couldn’t place how I was feeling.
We hopped in the Car and I drove away. I could feel Hailey starting at me but she didn’t say anything either. Probably didn’t know what to say  it was such a complicated situation.
“I’m sorry Jay I know you said you guys never got in touch or she wasn’t around but she was still the mother of your child” Hailey said
“I know but I always resented her I mean I can’t imagine not being apart of Y/N’s live and leaving her I never wrapped my mind around the fact a mother would walk out of their child’s life. “ I said
“I know but she was involved with drugs a gang i imagine it wasn’t easy for her.” Hailey said
“You know I always told her not to come around anymore that neither of us wanted her around but I didn’t know she was going through that and I can’t help but think what if I didn’t say that I mean she was the mother of my child” I said
Hailey grabbed my hand and it squeezed it tight.
“I can’t help but now think that Y/N really now will never know her mom and that’s not fair I didn’t mean what I said to Emma before I was just mad and now she died without knowing that” I said
“Look it was a tough situation for the both of you but she probably knew you were just upset I mean she was clean doing the right thing she was turning her life around and it’s okay for you to mourn that loss Jay” Hailey said
“I can’t help but keep thinking that of course this happens when Y/N finally comes down to see me I mean what am I going to tell her” I said
“The truth her mom was sick but she was getting better and died trying to make a difference. And maybe we will have this case wrapped up by this weekend” Hailey said
“Yeah I hope” I said
We reached the 99th precinct where the detectives were. We made our way inside and went up to the desk sergeant
“Detective Halstead and Detective Upton were here to speak to two of your dectevies Hooper and Barnes”  I said flashing my badge to her
“What’s this about what do you want with them” She asked
“Were working a case and we need some information from them” Hailey asked
“There upstairs go on ahead” She said
Me and Hailey just looked at each other. There were some weird vibes we were getting. We had to keep this close to the vest if anyone knew we were suspecting Cops of murder it could get real ugly.
We walked up the stairs to the unit and we were meant with not so welcoming looks.
“How can we help you officers” One of the men said
“It’s detectives and were looking for detectives Hooper and Barnes any idea where they are” Hailey asked and when she did another guy walked over he was tall and skinny with brown hair and brown eyes,
The other one Hailey was talking to was short and fat with black hair and black eyes.  I’m guessing we were talking to our guys the way they were looking at us.
“How can we help you detectives” he said in a snarky condescending way.
“Let’s do this in private” Hailey said
The two of them looked at each other and just laughed. These guys were getting under my skin and I tried my best to keep my cool not wanting to cause problems.  Which was harder said then done.
“Fine by me you want to explain why one of your CI’s was found dead in a safe house that only the two of you know about”  I said.
“The hell are you accusing of” The shorter fat one said
“I’m not accusing you of anything I’m just asking questions” I said
“Yeah well you come up here to my unit accusing me of being dirty what the hell is wrong with you” The taller one said
“This is why we asked to talk in private were not accusing anyone of anything we just need to know what happened when was the last time you talked to her” Hailey asked nicely trying to diffuse the situation.
“Look we talked to her last night she said she was fine she seemed in a good mood” The short one said
 “What about” I asked
“She said she was gonna meet her daughter for the first time down a coffee shop downtown we tried to convince until the case was over but she said she was in town for a limited time so we told her we would send plain clothes with her to keep her safe”  The tall man said
“When was the last time you physically saw or talked to her “ I asked
“Last night around 6 she was fine so we didn’t feel the need to go over” The tall man said
“Was there anyone watching her at all” I asked trying not to get upset
“There should have been two uni’s who went by and checked on her later that night but other than that no it’s a safe house for a reason we thought she would have been safe” The shorter man said
“Okay thanks and which one is which again” Hailey asked
“I’m Barnes” The taller man said
“I’m Hooper” The Shorter said
“Thanks we’ll be in contact” Hailey said and we walked away
I’m still not sure how I feel about these guys something in my gut isn’t sitting right with me. It’s just a feeling in the pit of my stomach.
“I’m guessing you didn’t know that Y/N was planning on meeting her mom” Hailey asked me as we were getting into the car.
“No I didn’t she didn’t tell me I don’t even know how they got into contact” I said
“We need to call her see if there is anything she knows” Hailey asked
“Yeah I’m way ahead of you” I said pulling out my phone.
I hooked it up to the car’s bluetooth and dialed her number.  The phone started ringing and I kept thinking in my head please answer the phone. After a few rings thankfully she did.
“Y/N I need to talk to you” I said trying to conceal my panic and worry
“Look dad I’m sorry I should have told you but I wanted to surprise you and I didn’t mean to be a big deal” She said into the phone
“Y/N It’s okay she’s your mom I understand but you didn’t need to keep this from me” I said
“Uhh what are you talking about” She said confused
Me and Hailey both gave each other a confused look
“Y/N what are you talking about” I asked
“I’m talking about the fact I broke into your apartment well not broke I know where you keep your spare key but some guy in your building didn’t know who I was and called the cops I texted you about it one of the cops knew me and let me go” She said
“Wait your home” I asked
“Yeah I am what are you talking about” Y/N asked me.
“Y/N I don’t want to talk about this over the phone can you meet me down at the district” I asked
“You can borrow my car I left my keys on the dining room table and it’s the black sedan in the parking lot” Hailey said
“Okay thank you is everything okay though your worrying me” Y/N said
“It’s fine we just have a couple of questions to ask you nothing major okay” I said
There was a noise in the background that sounded like knocking.
“Y/N what is that” Hailey asked
“I don’t know someone’s at the door” Y/N said
It was quiet and we were guessing she went to the door she came a few minutes later
“It’s two police officers they said the said you sent them over here” Y/N said
“Hey Y/N you listen to me I didn’t send anyone over there where are you right now” I said trying to keep my voice calm but that wasn’t happening.
“I’m in the spare bedroom getting my bag” She said panicking
“It’s going to be okay were on our way just keep the door locked okay and try to block yourself in their i’m coming sweetheart” I said panic clear in my voice.
There was loud knocking and banging going on and voices yelling out Y/N’s name, my leg was shaking and I could barely sit in the seat.
“Y/n How you doing are you okay did you block the door” Hailey asked
“ I think so there’s not much in there I put the dresser in front and some other things on top I’m in the closet now” Y/N said
“Good your doing good were almost there sweetheart” I said
There was a loud bang and then I heard Y/N scream and then the line went dead.  I tried calling her back over and over but nothing.
I could feel my heart jump into my stomach. My anxiety was so high I thought I was going to pass out.
Hailey started calling Voight and I was so distracted I didn’t even notice.
“Sarge we got a situation we just talked to Y/N she’s in town and we think she was just kidnapped. We couldn't hear much when the line went dead. Barnes and Cooper said that Emma was going to meet Y/N but it sounds like it wasn’t her” Hailey said
“Where was she at when the call was made” Voight asked.
“Mine and Jay’s Apartment  112th park place apartment C she just got to town we had no idea she came in so early” Hailey said
“Were on our way and sending all available units” Voight said
“What the hell is going on Hailey how did they know where live and why pretend to be Y/N to Emma and is Y/N alive or dead” I asked I didn’t even bother wiping the tears from my face.
Not knowing if my child was alive or dead was the worst feeling in the world. Something I would never wish on anyone
We rolled up to the apartment about 5 minutes later and I didn’t even say anything to anyone. Some of intelligence was outside but I didn’t stop to say anything.
When I made it up to the apartment I looked around and she was nowhere to be seen. I couldn’t tell if it made me feel better or not.
At least now she had a fighting chance. I thought they wouldn’t take her if she was already gone.
I went back downstairs to where everyone was and they all just looked at me with sad looks.
“One of our own is missing and we need to find so let’s go back to the district and pull everything we have on Emma her known associates if it wasn’t Y/N she was talking to let’s find out who” Voight said
We all headed back to the district.  Hailey grabbed my hand and Squeezed it. If anything happened to Y/N i wouldn’t know what I would do.
I tried to block those thoughts of my head. I couldn’t keep going thinking like this.
We arrived at the district and when we walked in Platt came from the behind to greet us
“Jay I’m so sorry you bet your ass were gonna catch these bastards” Platt said
“Thanks I appreciate it” I said
We walked upstairs and I sat down at my desk and looked at the picture of me and Y/N it was from her last trip down here and we went Ice Skating together. I just looked at the picture and smiled.
Then Kim spoke up and broke me out of my thoughts.
“I think I know who was pretending to be Y/N to Emma” Kim said
“Multiple calls came from a phone traced back to a  Gemma Collins she’s got a rap sheet for solicitation and drug use her and Emma shared a cell for a few months up in stateside” Kim said
“Why would Gemma pretend to be Y/N though” Atwater asked
“Apparently Gemma works for the latin side Kings was getting up there was running and selling Emma was working with her until Emma went clean maybe Gemma found out and was using it against her” Kim said
“One possibility but pretending to be someone’s daughter that’s way personal and whack “ Atwater said
“Hey I got something the two detectives when was the last time they said they saw Emma” Ruz asked
“Around six why” I said
“That’s a lie we got pod cameras on Emma’s corner we saw the two of them going 30 minutes before Emma’s time of death” Ruz said
“Why lie what the hell is going on” I said
“I don’t know but what ever the hell is going on it’s gotta involve the Police Department and we got corruption” Ruz said
“What ever the hell is going on we have to figure it out before anything happens to  Y/N” I said
“Were all over it Jay but we gotta tread carefully” Voight said
“Let’s deep dive into these detectives every arrest every CI every little thing they done.” Voight said
We got to work trying to make every connection and anything to lead us to where Y/N might be. We were running on borrowed time but we had to get this right.
No matter how corrupt or anything this case might be we will find Y/N and bring her home..

day one: head wound | h.u.
summary: you almost managed to leave the ed on time today. almost.
pairing: hailey upton x doctor!reader
word count: 1054
Tumblr media
You didn’t want to jinx everything by thinking the word, but the ED had been surprisingly Q-word this shift. Not only had you been able to actually sit down and eat your lunch with Sarah and Ava, but you had even managed to finish off a cup of coffee while it was still warm, not even needing to microwave it.
It was basically a miracle at this point in your shift, and you were clinging onto the hope that you would get to leave on time and get to have a romantic night in with your girlfriend. So it would stand to reason that literal minutes before your shift was supposed to be over, there is an influx of injured gang bangers being wheeled into the ED, and as the resident trauma fellow, you’re barking out orders left and right, glaring at the med students who are getting in your way.
Thankfully there aren’t any serious injuries that require major surgery, you think you’d wind up falling asleep if you had to scrub in, but just as you turn to head to the staff room, you hear the unmistakable gruff voice of Hank Voight. Following the sound to one of the treatment rooms, you swing the curtain back only to find your girlfriend arguing with Will, pushing his hand away from her face and insisting that she’s fine.
“Hailey Anne, you better have a damn good reason for not letting me know you were hurt.” You snap, garnering the attention of everyone in the crowded room.
“Babe it’s fine, it’s just a scratch. I’m okay, I didn’t want to worry you.“ She reaches her hand out to you, motioning for Jay to move out of the way so you can get close enough to hold her hand.
“Well it’s too late for that, and I don’t know where exactly you got your medical degree, but that isn’t just a cut. Now that I’m here, and officially off shift, I can keep you company and relieve your team, and you can be a good little patient and let Will treat you, capisce?”
Voight barks out a laugh and Kim giggles as Jay fails to bite back a knowing smirk. Her unit say their goodbyes, wishing you luck as they hug you on their way out. As soon as they’ve left, Will mouths his thanks to you, promising to be back in just a moment with a gown for Hailey and a suture kit for her head laceration.
You try to settle into the uncomfortable looking chair at her bedside, but Hailey’s having none of it, wobbling as she leans over the side of her bed and grabbing your arm to tug you on it with her. There’s a brief moment where you put up a pitiful amount of resistance to your girlfriend’s attempts, but you soon give in and settle down on the side opposite to where her wound was to make things easier for Will.
She tries to apologise but you quietly shush her, pressing gentle kisses to her temple and her forehead. Lacing your fingers together, you run your thumb against her slightly reddened knuckles, bringing them up to your lips to press a quick kiss to them just in time for Will to return, eyeing Hailey cautiously as if she’d start kicking up a fuss again.
“Okay so it shouldn’t take long at all, and while I would much rather you stay here overnight so I could monitor you, I’m not entirely convinced you wouldn’t try to escape when no one was watching.”
She flushes bright red, glaring as your silent laughter shakes her shoulder, but doesn’t try to deny the accusation. Taking that as permission to get everything ready, Will sets up the suture kit on the metal tray beside her. Her grip on you tightens at the sight of the lidocaine syringe, realising that it would be injected into her forehead while she was still conscious.
“Hey,” you whisper into her ear, too quietly for Will to hear you over the hubbub of the ED, “the sooner Will stitches you up, the sooner we get to go home. And the sooner we get home, well, let’s say if you’re a good girl, you’ll be in for a treat.”
She relaxes somewhat, still clinging onto your hand with a death grip, but when you start rubbing circles on her back and her eyes flutter shut, Will takes the initiative and injects her with it before she can freak out completely. The rest of the procedure goes off without a hitch, Hailey keeping her eyes shut and letting Will get on with it, bringing up how weird the muted sensation is.
Once he dresses the wound, sticking some gauze on it to cover it up, he starts with the same aftercare spiel, Hailey trying her best to pay attention but failing as she yawns loudly. He sends you both on your way, grabbing a wheelchair for Hailey to sit in on the elevator ride up to the staff car park. Although she bitches about being capable of walking, it isn’t hard to see how off kilter she is just transferring herself off of the bed.
Taking his iPad from him, you sign the discharge papers as you walk to the elevator, letting Will push her down the busy ED corridors. The journey in the elevator takes no time at all, and before you know it, you’re in your car, waving Will goodbye as he sprints back to the elevator, the sound of his pager beeping growing fainter by the second.
“I’m sorry I scared you.” Hailey says as soon as you get settled behind the wheel.
“I know you are. It’s just… I see shit like this every day; someone comes in with what seems to be a minor injury and ends up dead hours later. I don’t know what I’d do if that was you.” Your voice breaks and you forcefully blink back the tears welling up in your eyes.
“Hey, hey, look at me. I’m okay. I love you babe, and I’m not going anywhere. Come on, let’s go home.”
She reaches over and places her hand on your thigh, knowing how much you hate driving one handed like she does so effortlessly. Home, that’s just what the doctor ordered.

""... I’ve got my own thoughts on that whole thing, but that’s for another post. At the end of the day, I think we’ll get more by the end of the season. I just don’t know what, or if we’ll like it. But time will tell. ""
Can't wait to see that post, I would love to hear your thoughts. I totally agree with you I think what happens to Hailey and Jay will really depend on what Tracy does. And I don't think we will like the outcome if she stays but I really don't want Tracy to leave as well. So many conflicting thoughts. What Tracy said in that interview to Emily is always in the back of my head so I am just going to prepare for the worst and if anything else happens it will be a positive surprise. On the other hand if they were going to separate I still don't understand why they just couldn't do it at the beginning, it would have changed nothing in this Hailey story line.
Hi, I am sorry this has taken a few days to answer. Life got a little hectic. I am going to start by saying - this is all purely speculation and my own ideas.
Ultimately, I am not going to be completely shocked whether she decides to go or if she decides to stay. She has something special with PD. It's a great cast, great crew, on a long time running procedural drama. It's stability in a sense for an actor, so is that something she wants to give up. She's got something that some actors search for a long time for and she's only been there for five years, where everyone else has been there just about a decade. I could see how that might be something she's not ready to give up yet.
However, I can see where she may be itching to start branching out. Her article with Michigan Ave last year she talked about writing and producing. Then as you mentioned, her interview with Emily. (I am not Emily's biggest fan - soI don't take much credibility in that article, but still, I do count it to a small extent). I also see what they are doing to Hailey this season. They are putting her through the wringer, since her husband has left. On a professional level, that has to be exhausting, constantly taking Hailey to these emotional, physical depths has at some point start to get exhausting. On a personal level, her best friend, screen partner of nearly five years is gone too - the entire day at work looks different. So she's adjusting to a whole new personal level of set while also dealing with Hailey finding a new normal. It's got to be taxing. So the end of the day, which one wins?
I'm not sure, and I can't really tell yet. But like I said, either way, I don't think I will be fully surprised.
The thing with Upstead for me is this: they didn't have to do this, but they did. They could have chosen to transfer him within the CPD, they could have separated them at the beginning, etc. It would still make this hard for her no matter what.
I think if Tracy stays, things will probably go in a way we don't like. If she doesn't stay, well I could see them riding of into the sunset. (There is also the third option, the more hail Mary move I'd argue, where she does stay, somehow he comes home off camera and they stay together - but given how they are already handling him being gone, I just don't really see this option right now….But they could fool us. )
So yes, that's more or less my thoughts on Tracy right now.
Personally, I want her to stay because I love Hailey. I also want her to go because I'd love to see her spread her wings. Regardless of all of that, I hope she does chose what she wants to do.
I’d say that whatever the decision is, would probably be made by now, or there’s a general consensus between her and the writers on where she is headed/leaning towards so that they have the time to *properly* write her off if she is leaving.
