Nothing has made sense since Gwen took over. At this point, I’m expecting the worst for Hailey’s exit.
In my mind 9x09 was the end of PD. Hailey and Jay both left Intelligence realizing that they need a change together. #Upsteadforever
Still doing my Chicago PD rewatch. I’m finally on season 10… and it still kills me to see how they RUINED Jay’s storyline. Watching him turn into a version of Voight and witnessing his policing style and even personality do a whole 360, tears my heart to pieces. Even Hailey witnessed it and was like WTF!?!? This was not the man she married and fell in love with… it’s like he starts avoiding her or just completely disconnects from her. Always with Voight.
The whole plot of CPD was Jay completely disagreeing with Voight and his policing style, then after everything happens with Hailey, Roy, and Voight, he wants to protect the woman he loves but also ends up shifting everything about him entirely.
His last episode hurts not only my heart but my soul too… he ends up going in and doing an unlawful search that he never would have done prior to all this shit, gets attacked by one of the criminals and ends up killing him. Of course, Voight covers it up and Hailey helps (because she loves him). It kills me that this is what it took to make him realize he couldn’t do this shit anymore… and he resigns then decides to go back to the Army to “fix himself” and get back to some sort of order to get back to black and white and avoid the gray areas. Him and Hailey’s goodbye is GUT WRENCHING 😭 I’m practically sobbing all over again.
AND THEN… when he decides to leave Hailey in Chicago to return to working with the Army, they make him into an asshole who won’t even talk to his wife. Leading to her sending him divorce papers. I mean… what the actual fuck?
I understand Jesse wanting to leave the show to go and do new things, but his character arc deserved/deserves so much better! Upstead deserved/deserves better!
Does anyone agree? Give me your thoughts. 💭

Not only was it a great episode for Upstead. It was a great episode to show Hailey’s growth. And the case was actually pretty interesting. A 3 in 1 masterpiece!

You can’t just leave. I fly out today. Today? It’s not forever, okay? It’s eight months, maybe a little longer. But I swear to you that we’re gonna get through this because… you’re the love of my life. And if I’m yours… Of course you are. Then you’ll know that you have to let me go.

Jesse is back directing episode 12 of Chicago PD and I’m just gonna say one thing about it bc my soul needs it lifted off me
The fact that he’s so excited is amazing and he’s literally having so much fun doing it which is incredible
But the elephant in the room has been swirling in my head for a few days and I’m over it:
If Hailey Upton gets as atrocious of a character exit as Jay Halstead did there are a couple of conclusions we can come to.
(Basically if Gwen decides that Hailey And Jay can’t find a way to re mend their relationship off screen in some sort of way at the same time as whatever Hailey’s next journey will be that is true to her character)
1. Gwen just doesn’t have what it takes to translate how a fandom can support and lift up a show (or understand how it’s impact benefits or hurts said show) (ie. pd having some of its lowest ratings in show history)
2. Gwen has some extremely strange obsession with women’s trauma making them “stronger” and that isn’t gonna be something she’s gonna let go of.
3. It won’t be a matter of “Jesse had other obligations and the schedule just didn’t work out”. It will be because she doesn’t actually care about these characters that much. If she wanted to she would and right now I see like a 5% chance if it’s entirely up to her bc the bottom line is really what she’s concerned about. And that’s sort of why I’m not a fan anymore bc that’s not worth my time and effort
✨other shows complete casts and crews have shown how much their fans matter to the core of their shows much better than Gwen ever has and I personally gave her the benefit of the doubt in the beginning that I no longer afford her✨
(And just to be 100% clear none of this is directed at any of the cast and only Gwen because they make none of these decisions at all:))))

Preach👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Some Chicago P.D. musings (Or is it Upstead musings?)
I just want to word-vomit a little about the whole "trauma response" thing re: Upstead, and it didn't really fit as part of my review, which had to be more about the episode. And the reason I want to go into it it's not even because it doesn't really fit with what we saw on screen (it truly doesn't), but because if that was ever the intent behind it, then the writing absolutely failed.
The problem, I think, it's that it's easy to say people who have suffered trauma did this as a response to that trauma and somehow equate that to trauma response when the two things are not anywhere near the same. Honestly, we've all suffered trauma to some degree, so I feel like this framing basically means 90% of the things people do in life are a trauma response.
Hailey and Jay (you can take Jay out of my cold, dead hands, I'm never using that other name) had a relationship that was not about their individual trauma. It really wasn't. Having someone you can lean on and talk to in bad times doesn't mean your relationship is all about trauma. In fact, sharing your trauma with someone is one of the healthiest things you can do.
Did Hailey and Jay marry quickly and as a response to a very emotional moment? Yes. Does that make it a trauma response? No. It was literally not about the trauma, but about looking for something good during a bad time and hanging onto that.
In fact -- part of that storyline is Jay literally checking with Hailey that this is something she really wants, not just a knee-jerk reaction to her trauma! The show established one thing and now, it just wants to sell a different thing because Jesse Lee Soffer left and they absolutely botched his exit.
And make no mistake about it, this is a choice Chicago P.D. is making. They could write out Hailey in a way that reunites Upstead, just as they could have written Jay out in a way that didn't ruin them. We wouldn't even need to see Jesse Lee Soffer for it to work. But they not only won't, they now want to rewrite history to make it seem like Upstead was always something other than what we saw with our own two eyes. That's the part that hurts.

Trauma response my ass… First of all, how dare she? And second of all, she cannot be serious. Jay and Hailey are equally the best thing that has ever happened to each other. Gwen is completely out of touch, she wrote most of their beautiful foundation only to disrespect it a few years later by calling them getting married a trauma response like they weren’t a slowburn romance from the beginning, all for the sole reason for being intentionally spiteful. Like screw her forever.

Gwen's interviews are making me sad. I don't buy what she's pushing for Voight and Hailey at all
I find Gwen’s attempts to paint the Voight/Hailey dynamic as caring” and “loving” not only toxic, but downright offensive. It feels actively insulting to my intelligence as a viewer for her to retcon what happened between these two characters in such an extreme and unsubstantiated manner, and to execute it so thoughtlessly at that. The storytelling is not only completely incoherent when analyzed in line with past seasons but is also emotionally exhausting and deeply unsatisfying to watch.
It's clear to me that Gwen's concept of an exciting, strong character arc is limited to one cheaply littered with turmoil, redundancy and rudimentary angst abound. It's indicative of her amateur storytelling skills and poor grasp on character development. What an embarrassing product.

I can totally see this happen!! Please just let it happen!!🥺🙏🏼✨✨
🧍🏼‍♀️
Hear me out. HEAR ME OUT.
Jay will be in the first episode. He'll be in Chicago, and Hailey's struggle to move on will be because the ring is off and she was thinking they were done, but he's back around. He will ask to work things out, and she'll say no. She needs time. The season is spent healing parts of herself and shifting away from Intelligence. When her final episode comes around, she makes the decision to leave the unit. We see Jay one last time, and she tells him she is ready to start working on them. Screen fades to black. Dick Wolf's name comes on screen. Curtain falls.

What are some reasons why you are on the positive train?
Right there with you but just curious! ☺️
Sheer delusion!
Kidding. Kind of. I do have reasons. First, I'd say the timing. This show has never had two halves of the same couple leave this close together. The opportunity is there to finish the story they wrote for five seasons. Logically, it would make more narrative sense to let them finish out their story now that they have the chance to, rather than to obliterate it (more than they have) and make all the work they put into that relationship null.
Second, the fact that Jay is still part of the story at all. I do think they knew Tracy was leaving at some point last season. If they wanted Jay out of the picture completely, they could have done a death or divorce last year. I don't like the way they wrote it, but the fact that Jay is still part of the conversation of Hailey's life makes me think they kept the option there for a reason.
Third (and most flimsy) would be the cast behavior. Namely this doll they keep photographing. If it were a one-off, I wouldn't think anything of it. They keep posting it, though. Like three times in as many weeks. To me, that feels too intentional when they know how fans reacted to Jesse's departure. It's not really part of Tracy's social media history to continue to tease something like that for no reason.
So, yeah, it might all be delusion. But those are just a few of the small things that come to mind! There might be more, but this is what I'll go with for now.

What’s your all time favourite Upstead moment/scene?
Dude... there's so many! But to this day, my favorite Upstead scene is the ending of 6x07. "The thing that works". It's so iconic. It was one of the earliest moments in their friendship/partnership where we see them trusting each other. Jay, someone who rarely talks about his military past, trusted Hailey and told her what was going on. He trusted her with something so dark and emotional from his past, something he had never told another friend/partner.
**Chef's Kiss😘**
And Hailey knew what to say, how to respond. That's how soulmates work. They just get each other.
Ughh S6 Upstead was just superior. They weren't even together, but they still managed to capture our hearts. ❤️
