Part I
ââââââ
Midnight silence invaded the Halstead house, where you were sleeping peacefully, until you werenât. Muffled screams could be heard in the distance as you woke up from your sleep.
On instinct you reached a hand to shake Jay awake but you were met with the emptiness of his side. This made you wake up completely, being able to hear the screams that echoed the house and jumping out of bed you rushed out of your room directly to your daughters.
It had been two weeks since your daughters kidnapping, everyday you were all reminded of the pieces left behind. You knew what was happening, Doctor Charles had said it would, and it pained you that nothing could be done.
Scared as you reached her room, your eyes widen at the sight. Terrified cries and screams reached your ears as you saw Lia stepping back towards the corner of the wall holding her night lamp up as if to defend herself from something or someone. Thatâs when you saw Jay with his hands raised in a calming manner, showing Lia that he meant no harm and at the same time trying to approach the terrified teenager.
âSweetheart, can you put that downâ Jay asked his voice full of concern
âGET AWAY!â Lia screamed and cried as her grip tightened around the lamp
âBaby. Lia. Listen to my voice, itâs dadâ Jay exclaimed over the sound of her cries, arms still up as she shook her head
âLiaâŠâ you softly spoke taking a cautious step in her direction and stopping as she raised the lamp again,
âDonât come any closer!â she exclaimed, a tears ran down her cheeks, they seemed to not end.
âDahlia itâs mom, put the lamp down honey, pleaseâ you tried to bargain as you raised your hands following your husbands movement. Nothing seemed to work, nothing got through to her.
âNO! I said get away!â she continued to say as she swung the lamp making space around herself and accidentally scratching Jayâs arm making you gasp.
âJayâŠâ you whispered, your voice breaking as he slowly approached your side leaning down to say something
âI need you to distract her, alright. I have to take that lamp out of her hands, sheâs gonna hurt herselfâ Jay told you as his gaze stayed on Liaâs movements, the only thing he was worried about was his daughters safety. With a nod you moved slightly to the side, gaining her attention.
âHi, sunshine. Itâs momma. Itâs okay, youâre alright. Do you know where you are?â you asked as softly as you could trying to keep her gaze on you as Jay tried to get closer.
âGet the hell away from me!â she screamed at you with so much emotion it almost made you flinch. She pointed the night lamp at you, terrified.
âAlright, alright. I wonât get any closer. Do you know where you are?â
âYou tide me to a chair, my- my hands hurtâŠitâs so coldâŠITâS YOUR FAULT! I wanna go home. P-please I wanna go homeâ Lia cried shaking her head and tightly closing her eyes.
Because unknown to you she was having an internal battle where she wished she could open her eyes and everything would go back to how it was before. Safe, protected, naive. But that would never happen, she would never be the girl she was before the kidnapping. The only way was forward and it would be hell of a way.
You made eye contact with your husband, nodding in his direction. Thatâs all it took for Jay to rush to his daughters side taking the lamp in one swing and trapping her arms to her chest as he hugged her tightly.
âNO! NO! Please, please I didnât do anything, let me go. Please I want my dadâ Lia cried struggling, her back falling on her fatherâs chest, both sliding down the wall and to the floor as you reached them.
âBaby. Listen, listen to my voice. You are home, youâre back home. Dadâs right here⊠Iâm right here, I promiseâ Jay softly said as he tightened his grip on Lia, continuing to whisper in her ear as you caressed her head.
âPleaseâŠdonât hurt meâŠâ Lia whispered as silent tears left her eyes no longer struggling against Jay, too tired to even try.
âYouâre okay. Youâre safeâ you whispered, confused when you noticed Liaâs gaze
âJay. I think somethings wrongâ eyes wide as your head snapped to look at your husband, making him furrow his eyebrows and move slightly to get a look at Liaâs face.
âShit, I knew itâ he whispered taking a deep breath, realization on his face
âWhat?â you hurriedly asked
âSheâs still asleepâŠâ he calmly said putting his cheek on her head and sighing
âHo- how? Whatâs going on?â you stuttered as you tried to understand. You didnât know if you were still asleep, nothing was making sense.
âPTSD episode. Sheâs in a dazeâ Jay said, giving you a pained look as Liaâs now emotionless gaze stayed on the floor.
You looked back to your daughter as her eyes glazed over, she had been having flashbacks all along. You thought it was a nightmare from what could be the most terrifying hours of her life, but she was reliving everything from that night. So you got closer to your husband and daughter as if shielding her from everything around.
âWhat now?â your eyebrows furrowed sniffing, as you continued to caress her head
âWe waitâŠwe can just wait until she wakes up. Sheâs gonna be confused, we just have to be patientâ he said closing his eyes as he slumped against the wall now just hugging Liaâs limp body.
âItâs⊠itâs just like you after the rangers. And I still hate every second of it. I fucking hate itâ you whispered as you cried, voice breaking while you rested your head on his shoulder.
âMe tooâŠI hate it tooâ he whispered back pecking your forehead.
You understood this was not only affecting Lia, it was also bringing back horrible memories and parts of Jayâs life that neither of you wanted to relive. Jay felt even worse knowing that it was his daughter who was now going though it, the only thing that he could do was hold her.
âMomâŠâ she whined, as confusion took over her face and then panic.
âItâs alright, Lia. Weâre right hereâ you whispered sweetly brushing her tears away as Jay kept pecking her head caressing her arms. But something changed in her expression.
âWhere is he? Where did he go? Dad. Heâs inside the houseâ Lia said widening her eyes, sitting up and desperately looking around her room. At this you sniffed and closed your eyes.
âLia thereâs no one here, baby. Just usâ Jay lowly said running his hands over her arms in what he hoped was a calming way as she looked back to her father in confusion
âBut. I-â she sighed, before realizing that she had been having flashbacks
âNoâŠI- Iâm going crazy, I swear it was real. He was hereâŠâ she whispered as she slightly pushed the palms of her hands to her head hitting the sides repeatedly
âHey, hey, hey. No Lia, donât do that babyâ you said reaching for both her hands and kissing the back of them
âDadâŠâ she sobbed as she struggled to breath panting for air
âShh, in for four out for two, breathâ Jay repeated as he pulled her back protectively and rocked her side to side, looking at you as tears brimmed his green eyes.
âPlease make it stop, please. I want it to stopâ Lia said between cries as she slumped her head on Jayâs shoulder while he tucked her closer -if it was even possible-.
âI wish I could. You donât know how much we wish we couldâ Jay said, voice breaking and tears left both of your eyes as you hugged one another.
âWhy meâŠâ she whispered as you all cried together, making your heart shatter.
You three spend almost two hours on Liaâs bedroom floor, in between calming her and making sure she knew that this was real and she had woken up. Moving to the living room where you all cuddled on the couch, Liaâs head rested on her fathers lap as her legs were on yours. She looked up to the roof and sighed,
âDo you think Iâm going crazyâ she said as she bit her lip in a nervous manner. Her voice made both you and Jay look at her
âNo, of course not, honeyâ you answered before Jay could, as she nodded
âI think I amâŠâ Jay brushed her hair, before asking
âWhy, honey?â worried as he watch a tear leave one of her eyes
âI still feel the tape on my wrists, how the tip of the gun felt in my head and I swear that sometimes I hear their voicesâ she answered voice breaking, while Jay continued to brush her hair and you squeezed her leg.
âDo you think we should take Doctor Charles offer?â Jay asked, sad eyes as he looked at his daughter
âWill it make it quiet?â Lia asked desperation in her voice as her green broken eyes connected with her fathers
âQuiet?â you whispered,
âThereâs too much noise up here. I just want it to be quietâ she said pointing to her head and looking at both of you
âI canât promise you that, babyâ Jay said as he pursed his lips together shaking his head
âBut it helped youâŠtalking to someoneâ she continued sitting up in between both of you, looking at Jay for an answer. You took her hand squeezing it and giving Jay a sad but loving smile.
âYeahâŠit did, baby. It didâ Jay answered nodding, giving her an encouraging smile and taking her hand as she nodded back.
âNo⊠did I do that?â she asked quietly as she looked at Jayâs scratch arm.
âItâs okay-â Jay tried before being cut off
âIâm so sorry, dad! I didnât mean toâ she said cradling her free hand on her chest not taking her eyes off the injury as Jay shook his head
âI know sweetheart,â
âDad-â she looked guiltily
âHey! You have nothing to be sorry for, alright. Itâs just a scratch, nothing moreâ Jay said sternly as he reached for her cradled hand and kissing its back. She nodded resting her head on your shoulder while you wrapped your arms around her, falling asleep and leaving both of you battling internally.
âI feel like a failureâ Jay said lowly, to not wake your daughter.
âBabeâŠâ you started shaking your head and reaching for his hand
âI doâ as he looked ahead jaw clenching in frustration
âThen I feel like shit. I shouldnât have let her stay thereâ you said as guilt took over you unconsciously tightening the hug on your sleeping daughter.
âBabe. Donât put this on yourself, I agreed tooâ Jay said looking directly at you, both of you sharing the feeling
âAnd now the stupid trial, the comments, the fucking interviews.â you rambled listing all of the consequences of the kidnapping bitting your lip.
âAgreedâ he sighed
âItâs too much, JayâŠâ
âHey honey. Whatâs on your head?â he asked tilting his head waiting for your answer -but he knew where you were getting at-.
âI think we should leave Chicago, for goodâ you hurriedly said
âAlright, where?â he said reaching for his phone, probably to make some calls. Thatâs what you loved about your husband, the fact that he would drop anything for his family.
âGod- I donât know, I wish there was an answer to everythingâ you whispered pecking Liaâs head and looking at Jay, as he raised his head from his phone to look at you.
âI think I have an ideaâ putting his phone away and leaning an arm on the back of the couch squeezing your shoulder.
âIâm all ears, so shootâ you sighed, as he squinted his eyes thinking
âAlright, how about we take her to Doctor Charles in the morning. Maybe he can approach the idea of moving from Chicago, that way we can see where Liaâs mind is atâ Jay said shrugging his shoulders as you nodded for him to keep going.
âThen we make the decision. I think we should, you know we start fresh somewhere else. No memories, no familiarity to Chicago, just a blank spaceâ he finished biting his lip as he massaged his forehead
âA blank space, alright, but we take her to Doctor Charles firstâ you nodded,
âFirst thing when she wakes upâ Jay answered as hope expressed in both of your eyes

A/N: Hello guys. So Iâm not entirely in love with this, Iâm sorry if itâs not that good and I'm sorry for being a little disconnected. As Olivia "Liv" Halstead is Maggie Elizabeth Jones. Hope everyone likes this original idea.
Don't be afraid to leave your comment!
----------
Being a kindergarten teacher had its perks. For once you worked with the young, creative minds and had the chance to potentially make a positive impact on them. But other times it really sucked, for example like a couple of hours ago.
You were in your classroom having lunch by yourself as usual. When one of your students Olivia came to you with a troubled expression. Obviously you thought the worst about it, call it instinct.
âHi, miss Y/Nâ her sweet voice said as she took a seat in front of your desk. You smiled at her being met with a small one in return.
âHello sunshine. Are you okay?â you asked immediately putting your lunch on pause and giving your full attention to her.
âIâm sadâ she said casting her eyes down, this made you furrow your eyebrows
âCan I help you? We can talk about why youâre sadâ you asked warily but gently giving her a sympathetic smile while you searched for her eyes
âI donât want to make you upset miss Y/Nâ she said as she fiddled with her little hands.
Why would you be upset? But then again, Liv was probably the most selfless child you have ever met and obviously she would say something like this. Even in her short years of age she always thought of others first, she was a really empathic kid.
âLittle miss Olivia. Itâs alright to talk about feelings, they are valid, and you would never make me upsetâ you said in a serious manner as you nodded encouragingly
âEven if itâs sadness, Miss Y/N?â âEven if itâs sadnessâ you confirmed nodding
âI donât have a mom for mother daughter day partyâ she said looking at you with big green doe eyes as if you held the answer to every question. But before you could say something, she continued.
âMy daddy said my mom went to a place called heaven and that she watches over meâ she said sighing as she crossed her arms over your desk placing her chin on top. At her words you sighed too
âMy mom went to heaven too, when I was your ageâ you said lips tight as you tried to keep your emotions at bay
âWhy?â she curiously asked, making you avert your gaze before looking back at her and mustering a smile
âThatâs how life works. Sometimes heaven needs more people to help watch over usâ you said taking a deep breath
But how could you explain the concept of death to a little girl. You were sure that her dad had done the absolute best at it. Although you had only briefly talked a couple of times between drop out and pick up, and at teacher parent conference day. Nevertheless never touching the topic about Oliviaâs mother. Jay Halstead seemed like a really great father to this little girl and quite frankly you didnât want to overstep. You were broken out of your thought as you heard a little sob,
âBut I donât want her thereâ Olivia said as her little voice broke slightly along with your soul.
âOh Liv. Iâm sorry. I promise you, it will be better, one day youâll understandâ you said as you reached her side. Kneeling to her height and caressing her head as you hugged her
That conversation going on in circles in your head as you waited patiently biting good mornings to each of your students and their mothers at the drop line. While there was another conversation taking place in a car, as the passenger was getting ready for the drop off at school.
âLiv Iâm so sorry I canât come to your get togetherâ Jay said guiltily as he sighed looking at his daughter through the review mirror. He was heartbroken knowing he had hurt and possibly disappointed the only important person in his life.
âYou promised you would comeâ Olivia sadly said as she blinked rapidly in order to not let the tears fall as she avoided her fatherâs gaze
âI know. I know baby. But I have to go chase bad guys rememberâ Jay said turning to look at her once he parked in the drop line. A pained expression took place on his face when he saw her little tears.
âHey-â he started as he was about to reach for her hand, stopping
âI knowâŠâ she whispered disappointed brushing her tears away before Jay could see her, but of course he already had
Before Jay could muster a response the back door was opened, and Jay met your eyes. Big smile on your face as Olivia climbed out of the truck, hand in yours for support.
âHello little miss Livâ you said enthusiastically but as a response Olivia mustered an unenthusiastic âhelloâ. You glanced at Jay again smiling sadly before Liv waved goodbye to her father still not meeting his eyes.
âHi Iâm sorry. Sheâs in a bit of a mood. I broke a promiseâ Jay said as sad eyes followed his daughters retrieving figure.
âNo worries. I understand. Iâll look after her, sheâll have a good time, I promiseâ you said smiling,
âThanks for that. Have a good dayâ Jay shared a smile as he shook his head before biting goodbyes
You both had a thing for each other, but neither had made a move upon it. You had always stayed professional for the sake of Olivia and so has he. There were always lingering looks at parent-teacher conferences, but they were ones of admiration. Add obviously the fact that you are his daughters teacher, so being in a relationship would stir up a lot of drama between the other parents including your superiors.
When you entered your classroom all of the momâs were sitting with their kids already doing the activities and eating the snacks you had brought for the occasion. With the exception of Olivia, who was sitting at a little table all by herself and this stirred something inside you.
In the district Jay was struggling to concentrate and the guilt was eating him alive. The look and the tears that he saw on Oliviaâs face hunting him relentlessly.
âHey, didnât you have little nuggetâs mom-daughter thing today?â Kevin asked as he walked into the breakroom
âDonât remind me. Sheâs gonna hate meâ Jay said as he stirred his coffee
âMan. Donât tell me youâre missing itâ Kevin asked leaning besides Jay, being met with a hum in confirmation
âThere will be more in the future, I just-â Jay was interrupted by the other detective
âHell na, man. You go do what you gotta doâ Kevin started looking at his friend like if he had grown two heads
âKev-â
âDonât let her down, bro. Iâll cover for you. Goâ at this Jay looked at his friend trying to get his thoughts in place.
Kevin took a deep breath before taking ahold of Jay, dragging him into the bullpen and practically throwing Jayâs stuff in his arms before rushing him out to his truck.
âYou go be a dad. I got your backâ Kevin told Jay as the latter turned his truck on.
âThanks, man, Iâll owe you big timeâ âDonât worry about it, a beer at Mollyâs can work for meâ
Guiltily he thought of the brief conversation he had with Olivia and the mistake he would be committing if he didnât make it. As he parked in the school he knew he wasnât about to let his daughter be by herself, he wasnât going to let her down.
Entering the classroom he looked over the heads and tables trying to identify his daughter. There she was on a table gluing something, but before he could move he saw you sitting beside her. Now noticing Livâs laugh mixed with your own.
âSo Liv, whatâs your favorite color?â you asked as you colored the paper you had prepared for everyone, but Olivia didnât respond. As you heard a gasp leave her mouth your head snapped up to her face following her eyesight to the door.
âHe came, miss Y/Nâ Hazel excitedly said before leaping to her feet and running into her fatherâs awaiting arms, the latter picking her up kissing her cheek
âHey baby!â Jay said with a smile on his face, as he saw how Olivia beamed happily
âDaddy you cameâ âOf course, I made a promise rememberâ he said matching her excitement.
At the same time he walked to the table Olivia was occupying as you stood up looking at them with a shy smile. When they reached the table Liv sat down explaining to her dad what she was doing, to which he nodded smiling with excitement. You took that as your signal to go back to your desk,
âHey, uh, Miss Y/Nâ Jay said as he walked over to where you had stopped and turned to him
âJust Y/N itâs fineâ you waved him off with a kind smile
ââŠY/N-â
âIâm sorry for intruding-â âItâs-â
âShe told about her mom; thought I could helpâ you rambled with a remorse expression waiting as you felt a hand being placed on your shoulder
âTake a deep breathâ Jay said as he chuckled, to which you scratched the back of your neck nervously
âThank you, you didnât have to- but you did, and I really appreciate itâ he said smiling sadly as you both looked back towards Olivia, before you shook your head again
âSheâs a great girl, really smartâ you said smiling slightly as you returned Oliviaâs wave
âYeah she is. Thatâs all herâ he answered turning back to look at you
âI deeply apologize, the school should really mind what they write. If it was up to me it should be parent-child dayâ you said as you tilted your head, before Jay could answer another voice interrupted
âDad. Can miss Y/N sit with us? She was going to braid my hair nextâ Liv said excitedly as she looked up to Jay
âSure. If sheâs not too busy, remember she has adult responsibilitiesâ he answered looking down at Livâs big eyes
âSheâs not! She can teach you how to braid my hair, dadâ Olivia answered. You bit your lips trying to fight the laugh that was trying to surface when you watched Jayâs mouth hanging
âDamn, why do you have to wound me like that, pumpkinâ Jay said looking at you to see if you had heard. Shaking his head as you placed a hand over your mouth chuckling.

Jay Halstead Materlist
A/N: Hello my beautifully people. Here is a request from the beautiful @andreahalstead24
Donât be afraid to leave your comment!
âââââ-
For Sofia, Hope was not only one of the feelings Christmas brought her, but it was also the name of her boyfriendâs 2-year-old daughter. As Jay had said many times before his daughter had brought him hope, love and compassion when he thought life couldnât get worse. Sofia felt the same way about the little girl.
Hopeâs mother had left when Hope was mere months old leaving the young new father and newborn baby alone, without any guidance whatsoever. Sofia had shared with Jay a helping hand at raising the young girl. Sofia had been Hopeâs nurse and old friend of the Jayâs. Hence how Sofia had watched the little girl grow.
Winter was here and with it came the festivities. Sofia had helped Jay decorate the house inside and out. From Christmas lights on the railing of the stairs to fresh baked cookies in the kitchen isle and a big tree in the living room. Outside were lights, inflatable, and a little snowman the three of them had built in the morning. Hope was the happiest kid on earth, she also shared the passion for Christmas with Sofia.
By the end of the night Hope was already in bed while Sofia started to place the gifts underneath the three. There were so many but how could she not get a gift for every important person in her life and in Jayâs. After all the little family had a village in their corner, it was just fitting to get them something as a token of appreciation.
She was so engrossed in her mission that she didnât hear or see Jay lean in the living room frame admiring his beautiful girlfriend with a smile on his face. Saying he was grateful was an understatement, forever in dept is more like it. She had stayed in his life since so long ago that it almost felt like a whole lifetime had passed by.
They had been friends and gone through high school, rangers, only 2 years ago realizing their feelings and raising Hope together. For him, Hope and Sofia were everything he needed, everything he ever wanted. Pushing himself off the door frame, he picked a gift from the pile in one hand, wrapping the other around her waist and chuckling lightly when she jumped in surprise.
âJesus. Almost gave a heart attackâ Sofia said placing a hand over her heart as Jay chuckled
âIâm sorry. Santa looks beautiful this yearâ he teasingly said as he wrapped her in a loving hug pecking her cheeks a couple of times as she laughed
âThe elf looks handsome tooâ she joked back making Jay furrow his eyebrows
âWho are you calling an elf?- babe, donât ignore meâ Jay continued to try and get his girlfriendâs attention and eyes back from the pile of gifts
âDo you think this are enough?â she asked biting her lip as she looked at the gifts underneath the tree
âSure⊠but out of curiosity for whom?â Jay asked squinting his eyes slightly at her nervous expression
âHopeâ she said as if it was nothing.
Missing Jayâs wide eyes as he choked on air, the gift that he had in hand dropped onto the floor as the surprise of her comment settled in. Stepping back from the embrace they were sharing to completely look at her.
âThere is no way all this are for her-â Jay shook his head massaging his forehead as he stared at the gifts in horror
âWhy?â âBabe- you canât just buy her ten gifts and ask me if theyâre enough. This are enough to give to the whole cityâ he hissed in low voice looking straight at her eyes as if she had grown two heads
âFirstly, why not?â she asked raising a finger as if she was offended, also hissing silently to not wake Hope up.
âSheâs 2-years-oldâ he said in a matter-of-fact way
âAnd? Thereâs actually fifteenâŠâ she answered whispering the last part. Jayâs mouth dropped as looked back underneath the three -more than those?-.
âFift-â âYou seriously can expect me to not buy her the stuff she likes Jay. She gave me puppy eyesâ she hurriedly said
âHow- how much did you spend?â Jay asked as he scratch the back of his neck
âYou donât want to knowâ Sofia said shaking her head pursing her lips
âOh. For gods sakesâ he said as he walked towards the couch slumping down on it.
Sofia guiltily followed him to the couch sitting side by side, biting her lip as they both looked at all the presents under the tree. Maybe she did over buy, a lot. They both sighed as Jay reached for the plate of cookies on the coffee table taking a much-needed anxiety filled bite.
âAre they good?â Sofia asked expectingly looking at Jay, as he hummed satisfied
âThis are really goodâ he praised looking at the piece of cookie on his hand before looking at Sofia shaking his head at her guilty expression
âYou spoil her to much, Sophâ Jay said looking in her eyes, to which she winced
âCan you help me with the rest?â she whispered
âThereâs only three cookies. Pretty sure I can make space for themâ Jay said chuckling as he looked at his girlfriendâs shy smile before it morphed into guilt.
âNot about the cookiesâŠthe giftsâ she whispered wincing as she waited for his reaction
âSoph- BabeâŠâ Jay whined as he lightly hit his head with the back of the couch a couple of times.
âPleaseâ she giggled as she pecked his lips, Jay smiling slightly into it.
âLetâs get it over with thenâ he sighed standing dragging her with him towards the garage. When he opened the locked door his mouth fell, eyes wide. Taking a deep breath he turned his body to looked at Sofia raising an eyebrow.
âIâm sorryâŠâ she said in the same tone he had used before
âYouâre lucky youâre cuteâ he said crossing his arms
âYou know me. You know how I get on Christmas; donât know why you act so surprisedâ she said between laughs as he shook his head amusement clear on his face.
âYouâre gonna be the death of me Sophiaâ Jay said pecking her cheeks lovingly, before entering Santaâs improvised workshop
âSorry!â she winced as a box fell from the pile and onto Jayâs head, who proceeded to curse under his breath
Hours later rays of sunshine shone through the curtains; silence invaded the small house in Chicago. As Jay slept with ease, the silence and coldness in the air helped him settle. That wasnât gonna last much.
âBabe- babe wake upâ Sofia said standing beside the bed pocking his exposed cheek
âHoney. Itâs 6 in the morning. Come back to bed. Give it a couple of hoursâ Jay said groaning. Hand grabbing her sweater, dragging her back to bed as he switched his head to avoid the pocking.
âBut itâs Christmasâ Sofia said making a sad voice
âNo. Donât. Do thatâ Jay said warningly, voice hoarse and sleepy
âBut Jayâ âHope isnât even awakeâ as he huffed
âDADDY. SANTA CAME!â Hope came barreling into the room screaming at her fatherâs sleeping form
âScratch that, she was probably snooping downstairsâ Jay said getting up, laughing as he saw Hope clinging to Sofiaâs hand both jumping up and down in excitement.
âI live with two childrenâ âOh hush! Câmonâ Sofia said reaching for his hand and pulling him downstairs. As they all entered the living room filled with presents Hope yelped in happiness, resulting in both adults laughing.
âMomma. Lookâ Hope screamed as she picked up the empty cookie plate. Both adults looked at each other with surprised expressions on their faces.
âDid she-â âYes she didâ as both gazed wide eyed towards little Hope diving into the piles of presents
âJay-â as Sofia went to argue it. She would never replace Hopeâs mother, that was never her intention, and it would never be. He shook his head interrupting her
âJust enjoy itâ Jay said beaming as he threw his arm around her shoulders bringing her closer to him in order to kiss her. When they pulled away, both smiled before gazing at Hopeâs little figure trying to read the tags on the gifts.
âAlright, munchkin. Which one first?â Jay exclaimed walking towards the tree as Sofia sat on the couch facing both of them. It was a great day.

-------
Your boyfriends birthday wasnât something he made a big deal about. From a certain point in time to the present days it bargained him with the memories of all the people that couldnât be there with him, the people that had to leave too early. But nonetheless you always tried to bring him joy on the occasion, since you had started dating Jay always made sure you knew that he didnât expect something big or anything for that matter. The only thing he wanted was his little blended family.
In a really early morning, you had all woken up to get ready for the day. Laughter and jokes filled the small house you had bought together for you and your kids. Having breakfast, sharing plans and teasing one another. And even though it was his birthday no one had said anything about it yet, you all opted to have quality time before he left for work.
There was Gianna -or Gia- Jayâs 15-year-old daughter from a previous relationship. Her mom was still around and even if things hadnât work out between her and Jay you were all friendly towards each other, she was a nice woman. This was the difference between Gia and Thomas -or Tommy- your 9-year-old son. He didnât have any other male figure besides Jay, his father had left a long time ago.
So because of this other young humans beings you had been hesitant to try a relationship. Having been proved wrong because almost 5 years later youâre living together and giving each other a chance to be happy again. A chance to be complete.
Sitting at the kitchen table was Jay, Gia and Tommy while you stood leaning on the sink gazing at the people that meant the most to you. A sentiment shared by the young detective.
âAlright Iâm leavingâ Jay said standing and moving towards the sink.
âBe careful out there okay. Happy birthdayâ you whispered the last part as he hugged your waist
âThanks. Love youâ he muttered before pulling away and pecking your lips with a little smile that you matched.
âLove you more. Say hi to the team for meâ you said as you pecked his cheek a couple of times making him chuckle
Then he moved to the table where Tommy and Gia were making the plans for their snowy day free from school. Their relationship was very cute and even though they werenât related by blood, they both loved each other as if they were. After all they had been really young when they first met, so they had basically seen each other grow up. As he reached the table he bent to kiss Giaâs forehead before doing the same to Tommy and ruffling his hair.
âLove you both. Behaveâ he said looking pointily at Gia who raised her hands in surrender making all of you laugh
âDear father you wound me. I always behave, right Y/N?â Gia said in a matter-of-fact way, making you nod as you hummed
âYeah right. Stop covering for her babeâ Jay countered back not fully convinced and raising an eyebrow towards you
âIâm notâ you said between laughs as Gia smiled innocently at her father
âThey so areâ Tommy whispered squinting his eyes at his stepsister
âHush Tommy. You on the other hand. Behave, be careful and stop giving Trudy headachesâ the girl said raising an eyebrow at his dad to which he squinted his eyes at her going to say something before Tommy spoke.
âGood one Gi!â Tommy said smirking
âWhich side are you on?â Gia said rolling her eyes jokingly
âIâm Switzerlandâ Tommy said winning a snort from the people present.
âHigh five?â he asked Gia innocently Â
âYouâre lucky you match my vibeâ the teenager responded as they shared the high five laughing
âIâm getting bullied by my children, unbelievable. You guys are the worstâ Jay said jokingly shaking his head
âYouâre the one always getting shotâ Tommy said between chuckles
âNot funnyâ you said looking pointily at Tommy
âDid he lie, though?â Gia pitched in, making Tommy point at her before nodding his head
âOkay, alright. Now Iâm leaving love you allâ he said walking towards the front door.
âLove you dadâ the kids responded before Jay was out the door. There was a moment of silence before Gia decided to break it.
âSo- whatâs the plan?â she asked smirking slightly as your son smiled at his stepsister with raised eyebrows
âYou shall know soon my young padawansâ you answered all three exporting the same expression as you reached for the car keys.
Now hours later you stood in front of the cakes on display in the grocery store not being able to decide on which to order for Jay.
âI think this one is perfect Y/Nâ Gia commented pointing to a chocolate cake on display
âAnd I think great mind think alike. You are 100% right Giannaâ you answered smiling at her as she told the clerk the cake she wanted.
âGot the balloons maâ Tommy exclaimed from behind the balloons as he walked towards the both of you
âTommy!â you started laughing at the sight of all the balloons
âI didnât know which to pick. So I got one of eachâ Tommyâs voice muffled behind the wall of balloons
âDid you use all the money?â you asked raising a hand to your forehead
âMaybeâŠâ you heard him say in an innocent voice
âI think you might start flying Tommyâ Gia said between chuckles as you shook your head with a smile
âAlso, I mightâve dragged something from the shelves in isle 3â
âOh good god. Alright. We got balloons, snacks, and the cake. That just leaves-â your sentence was cut by Tommy
âMom can I hold the cake?â he asked innocently as you started walking out the store
âSweetheart, Gia already hasâŠâ
âTell you what. You hold the cake and Iâll hold the balloons. Yep- careful- so that way you donât go floating awayâ she interrupted you as she slightly bent to pass him the cake and reach the balloons.
As you had reached the house you three started putting everything together for the little surprise, just to remind him of the good things in life. An hour later between break snacks and exploded balloons you had managed to finish the little details, climbing down the stairs.
âAlrightâ you clapped gaining their attention,
âBalloons?â âDoneâ the teenager answered with thumbs up
âSnacks?â âReadyâ Tommy pointed to the table
âMovie?â âSet upâ your stepdaughter answered
âCake?â âLooks deliciousâ at Tommyâs response both you and Gia gazed at him with an amused look
âThat leaves-â Gia started reaching for her phone before the back door interrupted her
âHey! Sorry. Long shift. I parked my car in your backyardâ Will, your brother-in-law and coworker said as he rushed into the house with a guilty expression. You waved him off as he proceeded to hug everyone in greeting before looking at everything he smiled.
âHeâs gonna love itâ he said as he hugged you tightly.
When you opened your mouth to respond the sound of the front door filled the house. Everyone rushing around to the opposite side of the kitchen table to be facing Jay.
âBabeâ your boyfriend called
âKitchenâ you shouted back hearing his footsteps heading to the spot you were all in
âHey, did the kids open the fence to the back-â
âSURPRISE!â you all screamed. As Will blew an airhorn and the kids some cheering props
âShit!â he said jumping startled putting a hand over his chest and closing his eyes.
You chuckled as you rushed to his side grabbing his face and smashing your lips in his, feeling how he relaxed before his arms circled you by the waist. When you pulled away you smiled before leaving kisses all over his face to which he chuckled.
âHAPPY BIRTHDAYâ Gia screamed pressing the air horn again as everyone laughed before Will reached to take it from her hands
âLet me take this- thank you. You are dangerous missyâ he said making Gia scoff
âHappy birthday, dad. Thanks for everythingâ Tommy said hugging Jayâs waist the latter not doubting to hug him back
âBud, you have nothing to thank me forâ he whispered before ruffling his hair as Tommy tried swatting his hands away
âLove you dad. Happy birthdayâ Gia followed
âThanks sweetheartâ Jay answered as he reached for his daughter in a hug
âYou may be older, but you just got handsome-ishâ the teenage girl said hugging her dad with all her strength as Jay rolled his eyes. You followed the kids, leaning in the kitchen aisle as they hopped on to sit.
âMan. You get uglier by the yearâ Will jokingly shook his head at his brother from the other side of the table
âGuess what! I look like youâ Jay responded smirking before he flipped his brother off
âAre we about to witness a fight?â Tommy whispered to Gia
âMaybeâ she answered throwing candy in her mouth
âYou know itâs the truthâ âWe can go outsideâ Jay and Will kept bickering as you lean to pick a candy from the bowl on Giaâs lap
âHm interesting. Who would win, the doctor or the detective/ranger?â Tommy continued as he reach for a candy as well and munching it
âThink we should step in?â you asked looking at the Gia and Tommy
âNopeâ Gia muttered as you snickered
âWeâre not going outside; with your luck you might get shotâ Will said pointing at Jay as the latterâs mouth hung in an offended manner
âDamnâ Gia muttered eyes wide passing more candy to Tommy who gasped
âYouâre right I might get shot. Bullets chase me. You canât even keep a girlfriendâ Jay countered back teasingly shrugging his shoulders Â
âUh. Low blowâ Tommy said hand over his mouth, as Gia chuckled
âReal mature Jayâ Will said throwing a cheering prop to his brother, being met with Jayâs mocking laugh.
âI am. Just got a lot wiserâ Jay said in between laughs as he beckoned the kids to take pictures
Looking between the people that surrounded you in this kitchen you felt happiness. Jayâs smile as he took pictures with the kids and his brother would be ones of many. This memories lasting forever, saved in little polaroidâs on Giaâs memory box.

Part II
---------
It was the call you never expected or wished to have, your daughter screaming at the top of her lungs. Nothing was supposed to happen she was at her friendâs house for a sleepover, it was supposed to be a calm and quiet night. Now a couple of hours after the horrible call, the team had reunited at the district to take on the case. You and your husband both replayed in your heads her words and the desperation that came with them.
You and Jay laughed as you sat in the living room both appreciating the night alone and off work. Your 16-year-old daughter Dahlia -Lia as she likes to be called- was currently at her friendâs house. Her parents had planned it for Lia and Lucy -Liaâs friend- and since you had interacted with them before, you both agreed to let her go. It was approximately 11pm when Jayâs phone rang Liaâs face popping on the screen, he answered putting it on speaker.
âHi honey. Everything alrightâ Jay asked between chuckles as he laughed at something you said
âDadâŠâ the tone of her voice made both of you freeze and sit up straight on the couch
âBaby whatâs going on? Everything okay?â you asked leaning slightly towards the phone on Jayâs hand. Shallow breathing could be heard from the other line, along with silence.
âThere is someone in the houseâ she whispered. At this your eye widen as your hand on reflex grabbed your husbands forearm, his hand falling into the grasp
âLia. Listen where are Lucyâs parents?â Jay asked trying to maintain calm during the situation but inside he was as panicked as you were
âI donât know. I think they left without me. There is no one here, not even Lucy⊠Dad Iâm scared, I donât know what to doâ her voice broke as she still whispered into the phone. You shared a look with Jay before you both jumped into action, grabbing your keys and rushing to climb into the truck.
âLia babe. Where are you?â Jay asked as he pulled out of the driveway
âIâm in Lucyâs roomâ she said as you heard her shuffle around the room silently
âJay-â you started to talk before getting quiet as you heard noise from the phone. There was a banging on the other side of the line that made you jump, a small cry followed by hurried footsteps.
âDad- theyâre here. I locked myself in the bathroom. But I think they saw meâ Lia sobbed as she panted panic invading her senses
âBaby, listen to me alright. Weâre on our way. I promise. Stay where you are. Weâre coming to get youâ Jay said sternly at the thought of something bad happening to his daughter
âMomâ Lia cried into the phone as screaming was being heard, a banging noise after making your heart drop.
âIâm coming Lia. I swearâ you exclaimed, making Jay go faster as you both heard struggle from the other side
âMOM! No. Let me go. Dad. DAD!â Lia screamed before there was a thud on the other side. You thought they had done something to make her quiet, but Lia exclaimed one last time.
âThree guys. Dragon tattoo on their necks!â before you heard a slap over the line and silence after that.
Jay started cursing, his hand hitting the steering wheel as your eyes stayed on the screen of the truck her name still there. Hearing shuffling which you could only imagine was her being dragged away. As you arrived at Lucyâs house you both entered guns pointed in case they were still in there. But luck wasnât on your side, clearing every room you both arrived at the bathroom. The door was ripped from the hinges and there were clear signs of struggle.
âShitâ you barely heard Jayâs curse, as you shook your head. The denial.
âNoâ you whispered as you frantically moved to look around the bedroom again, almost hoping she was hiding somewhere. Your husband noticed your panicked state so he went towards you.
âHey Y/N. Listen weâre gonna find herâ Jay said cupping your cheeks as your breathing picked up
âYou donât know that Jayâ you cried, as he brought you into his arms whispering reassuring words. But nothing made it easy for either of you.
An hour later you were sat at your desk your head in your arms as you silently cried. Jay stood next to you a hand on your shoulder for support as the team was silent, none knew what to say to their friends. Being woken at almost 1am by the news the team didnât hesitate to spend extra hours trying to find Lia. By now everyone had changed into tactical uniforms prepared for anything that could come up.
âAnything on camera?â Jay asked Kim, the brunette shook her head painstakingly
âShe said they had a dragon tattoo on their necksâ you said, as you straightened yourself sniffing
âIâll look into itâ Kevin answered as rushing to his desk.
Hank called both of you to his office after he finished his call, neither taking a sit arms crossed with a mixed of concerned and pissed looks on both your faces.Â
âPatrol found Lucyâs father, Jason. But. Before we take on this. Are we doing this my way or yours?â Hank asked looking between you and Jay. Nor you neither Jay said a word looking straight at the sergeant, he nodded.
âI donât give a flying fuck how we do this. Just bring my daughter back. You bring her backâ you said jaw tensed as tears burned your eyes.
âWhatever it takesâ Jay nodded beside you agreeing with you while he gently squeezed your shoulder.
The older man nodded gesturing to both of you to follow him down to the garage. As you three entered you saw him sitting inside the cage. As he made eye contact with you, you fasten your steps grabbing a bat and opening the door with a swing. Jay wasnât going to stop you, and neither would your sergeant.
âWhere were you? Where is she?â you asked inching yourself closer to him, he shook his head in response
âI SWEAR IâM GOING TO SWING THIS BAT INTO YOUR SKULL!â you screamed, before you raised the bat, he recoiled raising his cuffed hands -you werenât gonna hit him, not yet at least-
âWhere is my daughter, Jason? Talk you coward piece of shitâ Jay said next, standing in front at the door of the cage
âYou know who has herâ you said pointing at him threateningly
âI donât know what you meanâ he said looking directly at you, trying to hide a smile. When you saw this you felt helpless, he was supposed to look after Lia while she was in his house and here he was nonchalantly like he didnât care.
âYou were supposed to look after her, why didnât you?â Hank asked inching closer, Jason shrugged his shoulders, turning his head avoiding all eye contactÂ
âWhy did you leave her alone at your house!?â you continued grabbing his jaw harshly and turning his head back to look into your eyes. You were met with Jasonâs stoic unbothered face.
âI swear to god! I donât even care if I go to jailâ in a swift motion Jay pushed himself of the door and grabbed Jason by the collar of his shirt pulling him to his feet and into the wall behind.
âTalk. Or Iâll let her swing. You wanna play tough, huh, how about nowâ your husband said grabbing his gun and pointing it at Jasonâs throat
âOkay. Okay, Iâm sorry I owe them moneyâ Jason said trying to wiggle out of Jayâs hold,
âAnd you left my daughter at your house! You knew they were coming after you. You ran like the coward you are, taking your family. What about mine?! You left her there! You should be grateful I donât put a bullet to your fucking headâ Jay exclaimed before smacking Jason with the gun.
âYouâre going to regret doing thatâ your husband said putting his gun away grabbing Jasonâs arm pulling him off the ground fixing the latterâs shirt. Standing toe to toe with him, face inches away.
âYou canât. Youâre a copâ Jason said eye wide as he looked between the three
âWhoâs going to stop meâ Jay said in a tone so cold it made shivers run doing your spine, he turned to looked towards you taking the bat from your hands.
âGo upstairsâ Jay said as you looked up at him with a confused expression on your face. Before you gazed at Hank,
âGo Y/Nâ the older man said nodding to the stairs
âJay-â you whispered shaking your head, you were both in this together
âIf things go south, one of us has to be out of the loopâ Jay gazed into your eyes, making you shake your head in protest
He wanted to make sure that if this got out, somehow, that you would be clear and Lia wouldnât be alone. Before you could object, you shared a look with your sergeant who nodded encouraging. Hank Voight wouldnât let anything get out; he would have both of your backs.
âTrust me. Heâs gonna talkâ Jay said tightening the grip on the bat. You looked towards Jasonâs frozen form; he didnât know how much and with whom he had messed up.
âDo itâ you said looking back at Jay and nodding once, before rushing upstairs.
At the same time in some place in the city of Chicago a 16-year-old girl was sitting in the dark, knees pulled to her chest as she laid her head in them. She was tired, confused and scared.
-Who are this people? Are they after my parents?- these were one of her many questions. She was pulled out of her thoughts as she saw the doorknob shake slightly before a man walked in.
The way he held himself made Lia understand he was important, his face was still in the shadows so Lia couldnât see who it was, the only visible thing was his blonde hair. The three men that had dragged her out of Lucyâs house -thing 1,2 & 3- still wore their ski masks as they stood behind him. Lia recoiled to the corner of the room, silent tears ran down her face as she waited for the man to move or say something.
âYOU HAD ONE JOBâ the new voice screamed.
He had an accent that Lia recognized -Russian-. She sobbed silently daring to raise her eyes slightly, confused as she saw that the man wasnât looking at her instead she was staring at his back as he raised a finger towards the other man.
âSir?â thing 1 said but was interrupted,
âWho is this kid?â blonde man asked looking over his shoulder at Lia who immediately snap her eyes down, before he turned back to the three.
âThatâs-. Thatâs Jasonâs kid. I thought you wanted us to bring her hereâ
-So, heâs the boss- Lia thought as the kidnapper laughed slightly thinking his boss was joking -oh but he wasnât-. As she gazed at them again the blonde started laughing making the thing 3 laugh nervously. He turned to Lia,
âLittle lady cover your eyesâ he said, Lia confused followed what he said putting her head back on her knees. Jumping and covering her ears as she heard a loud popping sound -gunshot- she thought
âYou DUMB FUCKâ he screamed at the bleeding body.
âGod damnit! I gave you a picture. Sheâs a redhead! Jasonâs kid is a brunette, you dumb assholesâ he screamed rubbing his forehead, biting his lip as he raised his fist like he was about to punch the other two guys.
âYou both are gonna fix this. Now. Iâm not happyâ the blonde man said as he turned around at the teenager whoâs arms covered her head, before he shook his head. The sound of gunshots were heard between the silence.
Back at the district you sat at the edge of your desk. It felt like it had been hours since you left the cage but in reality it had been 20 minutes. Being pulled out of your thoughts when you saw Hank walking into the bullpen, Jay trailing behind
âWeâve got a location. Letâs go!â not a second was waisted after hearing those words as everyone ran to the cars. Jay drove both of you, you took a shaky breath that broke into a sob. You felt your husbands hand on the back of your neck thumb caressing it as you cried.
âPlease let her be okayâ you kept repeating between sobs bending forward slightly.
Still rubbing his hand on your back Jay was no longer trying to hide his tears. You were both emotionally exhausted and the uncertainty of Lia not making it was destroying you from the inside out. As you arrived at the abandoned building the team dispersed, you followed Hailey as Jay went with Hank.
The place was cold, wet and dark it made you tear at the thought of your daughter being in this place, alone. Room by room, you felt your hope disappear at the emptiness of each of them. The team had cleared the rooms on their side and were coming towards you and Hailey for backup.
âItâs the last oneâ you whispered voice breaking, Hailey took a deep breath before turning the doorknob and pushing the door open. Both gasping at the sight in front of you.
âLia. Let her go!â âDrop it!â both Hailey and you exclaimed as you saw a blonde man pointing a gun at your daughters head while she sat tide to a chair tape on her mouth. You could hear her muffled screams and the tears running down her cheeks at the sight of you -her mom- but you were unable to understand anything.
âNo, I think I wonâtâ the man said, as you barely heard Hailey
âThereâs bodiesâ she whispered to you as you flickered your gaze to the floor looking back at your daughter as she closed her eyes
âLia. Baby open your eyesâ you said taking your eyes off the man threatening the life of your only daughter and looking directly at her.
Lia followed what you said making eye contact with you as you gave her a reassuring smile. She knew you were going to save her because, if there was anyone in this world that could do it. That would be you and her dad.
âHow cute. You must be momâ the man laughed nudging the tip of his gun into Liaâs head
âYou wanna know what your biggest mistake was?â you clenched your jaw as you spoke to the man
âSending this dumbasses to do a job I couldâve doneâ he asked humorously
âYeah- and taking my daughter you assholeâ you said before firing your gun.
You breathed out as you ran into the room to your daughters sitting figure. Her eyes closed tightly afraid to open them. As you slowly took it off the tape on her mouth and arms, she started crying in relief
âMomâ âHey sweetie. Youâre okayâ you said pulling her to her feet and hugging her tight, hearing heavy footsteps from the hallway.
âJay! Sheâs in hereâ Hailey screamed at the latter who had come into her view.
The rest of the team following closely behind guns raised since they had heard the gunshot echo through the building. Your husband ran like hell towards where Hailey was pointing. He thought of all the possibilities, all of the outcomes and prayed.
As he came into the room he sighed in relief before running towards you engulfing both into his chest as he kissed Liaâs forehead. After a minute you pulled away letting Jay wrapped Lia into a bone crashing hug. His hand protectively tucking her head into his neck your daughter sobbed as she buried herself deeper into her dadâs arms while you caressed her hair.
âYou guys came for meâ she cried in Jayâs chest, making tears escape your eyes
âOf course, we didâ you whispered
âHey sweetheart. Did they hurt you?â Jay said in her ear desperately, as he silently prayed they hadnât laid a finger on her hair.
âNo. Iâm okayâ when you heard Liaâs confirmation, both you and Jay breath in relieve as the team closed their eyes relishing in the same feeling.
âHalstead letâs get her to Medâ Hank said as he made eye contact with you
âJust give me a minute to hold her, alrightâ Jay said voice breaking as he locked eyes with the older man who nodded, signaling the team to give you some privacy.
Hours later of rushing Lia to the ED and dealing with a panicked Will Halstead as he saw his niece in a stretcher with the whole team behind it. He had been informed of the whole situation briefly by Hailey, he had mixed emotions about it. He felt hurt Jay hadnât contacted him as fast as it happened -maybe he couldâve helped- but Will understood the priorities, he knew he wouldâve only been in the way.
Now you and Jay sat beside your daughters sleeping form. While she laid on her left side, one hand in yours and the other on Jayâs. Jay brushed the fallen hairs off her face with his free hand as you rested your head on his shoulder. Both looking at your most prized possession, a gift that couldâve easily been snatched from existence.
âI thought we were going to lose herâ you whispered trying not to wake your daughter up. At your voice Jay turned his head slightly pecking your forehead before sighing.
âI know, me too. But sheâs right here and nothing will ever happen to her. I swear on my lifeâ Jay said as he continued looking at his daughter and brushing her hair.
Before she had fallen asleep Doctor Charles had visited. Lia told the three of you what had happened, what she heard and what the man said to her. You listened carefully; still on edge as parents hearing what she endured. The fear in her voice hunted you both even after hours of looking at her because after this, life would never be the same again.

It had been sudden. Andreaâs undercover phone had rang, Hank Voightâs name on the screen. Then she felt her world fall underneath her feet. Jay had resigned, the details were a blur to her and since she hadnât been around for a couple of weeks she didnât know what her husband was battling with or what he had done, until now. She rushed towards their shared apartment hoping to be able to catch Jay before he left. Unfortunately Andrea was met with a silenced apartment and a letter scribbled in a rushed handwriting -Jayâs-. She knew what she had to do, making the decision right then and there she called Hank.
As Jay arrived at the airport with bag on his shoulder and sad expression on his face. He didnât want to leave but he knew that he had to in order to try and find the man he once was, because now he only was being hunted by the mistake he had made. He had changed, everything had changed but Jay was certain he had to make this work, somehow. He couldnât lose Andrea, that was a fact and mostly he couldnât lose himself.
âJayâ the young man stopped as he heard a familiar voice call for him. As he turned he saw his former sergeant standing on the sidewalk. Walking towards the older man,
âI thought you hated long goodbyesâ Jay said as he now stood in front of the Hank
âYou can have any job you want in the department, Jayâ Hank sighed looking at his ex detective. Jay shook his head as he was about to respond, Hank interrupted him.
âIâd make sure of it, but you donât need me. Youâre passed thatâ Hank continued.
He had to make sure he said everything he needed before Jay was gone and he had to keep his promise to Andrea, that was the least he could do. Hank knew he had dragged the former detective into a rabbit hole, one he couldnât come back from and the guilt was eating the older man alive.
âJay. You donât want to be me-â the older man was interrupted by Jay
âNo. Itâs worse than that. I do. I do wanna be you- but I mean, is like you always told me. Iâm not and I shouldnât tryâ Jay said sadly before a cold expression took place on his face, while Hank looked down. They both knew the other was right, it had to happen.
âJay we all make mistakesâ Hank said after a moment of thought
âStill, is not what a signed up forâ he answered shaking his head thinking of everything that brought him to this moment. Every mistake, every doubt and all the guilt.
âHey and thatâs on me. Alrightâ Hank spoke sternly.
Trying to get the younger man to understand that he didnât need to carry this weight, because it wasnât his to carry.
âI couldnât even say goodbye to my wife. I left her a stupid noteâ Jay said bitterly voice breaking as he tried to fight the tears thinking of not being able to see her one last time. His wedding band feeling heavy on his finger. He imagined the betrayal and the hurt she would feel when she returned to the empty home, knowing he left the same way her father did when she was a kid. He had promised he would never leave her, but look where that got them.
âJayâŠâ âNo sarge. Just, can you do me a favor?â Jay asked now serious -getting tired of the long goodbye- as he look at the older man
âAnything kidâ âTake care of her for me, okayâ he whispered before extending his hand for Hank to shake.
âI wonât need toâ Hank said.
At this Jayâs eyebrows furrowed confused as Hank nodded pass Jayâs shoulder, the latter slowly turning around. Jayâs breath got caught in his throat at the sight of his wife a couple of feet away from the two men. He sighed, smiling sadly which was returned by Andrea with a little wave. They hadnât seen each other in weeks yet there she was as beautiful as ever, eyes and cheeks puffy from what he could imagine had been crying before arriving here.
âGood luck Jayâ Hankâs voice pulled the young former detectiveâs attention back, shaking hands with the older man before walking towards his wife. As he got closer he let his bag fall to the ground as he carried her off her feet in an embrace, her arms circling his neck.
âHi babyâ she whispered in his ear, as Jay sighed.
âHey beautifulâ he answered as one arm rounded her waist and the other securely tucked her head in his shoulder. Now he would get the chance to make things right with her before taking that flight into the uncertainty.
After a couple of minutes they pulled away Jay safely placing her back on the ground as his hands went to her cheeks. He looked at her with such love yet with so much regret and guilt, that it made her heart squeeze.
His gaze turned slightly falling on Hailey who was inside Andreaâs truck a smile resting on her face as she waved goodbye before driving away. Then down at Andreaâs feet where a bag was laying. Jay almost got whiplash as his head turned to her eyes furrowing his eyebrows.
âBabe whatâs going on?â he asked hands still on her face as she smiled
âDid you really think I would let you leave on your own?â she asked beaming at her husband. His eyes flickering around her face trying to figure out if it was a lie.
âYou didnât-â he shook his head, before being interrupted
âIf Iâm yours, youâll know you have to let me goâ, what kind of Shakespearean bullshit is that Jay Halstead. Were you really not dragging my ass with you?â Andrea asked raising an eyebrow amusingly as she shook her head while Jay chuckled slightly
âI wrote that because I thought I wouldnât see you before leavingâ he said thumb rubbing her cheekbones
âFine your kind of right. But you know your Spanish sucks, so you need meâ she said pecking his cheek pulling away to pick up her bag. She stopped herself when she saw Jayâs face turning serious again.
Too many questions and âwhatâs ifâ going through his head and as if she could read his mind she placed both hands on his cheeks directing his gaze to hers. Standing on the tip of her toes she pulled him into a kiss pouring all of the love and compassion she had, placing her forehead on his as they pulled away.
âWe made a vow, babe. Wherever you go. I. Go. No exceptionsâ words cracking as Jay brushed a tear that had managed to escape her beautiful eyes.
âI donât want to drag you away Andrea-â âGood thing youâre notâ
He shook his head with a thin lined smile before pulling her back into his arms digging his nose into her hair, taking a deep breath and closing his eyes. He wanted to keep the tears at bay, safe to say it wasnât working. God how much he loved the smell of cinnamon she always managed to have.
She always felt like home to him and he knew that they would always have each other. Pulling away and bending to pick up their bags Jay reached to hold her hand making Andrea intertwined their fingers bringing their joint hands to her lips as she gave a sweet peck on the back of his hand both walking to a new chapter. Together.
It had been a couple of months -4 to be exact-. Andrea was currently in Willâs car on her way to the district. She had returned to Chicago a couple of days ago so she could pack some of hers and Jayâs last stuff that his brother hadnât had time to send to them and bring it back with her. The trip only lasting 4 days so she would be back at Bolivia in 2 days. Now climbing the stairs to the front desk, she smiled and waved at the older woman who immediately rounded the desk to give her a hug.
âLook at you. You guys been married for 4 years and now you decide to procreate a baby chuckles, huh sunshineâ Trudy said amused as Andrea laughed shrugging her shoulders
âSurpriseâ she shook her hands, while Trudy shook her head scoffing,
âGo on. Their exited to see youâ Trudy ushered her up the stairs.
As she got to the top of the stairs she looked around everything seemed the same. Her gaze fell on Jayâs desk and memories started to surface making her smile. The team hadnât noticed her yet,
âIs this how you welcome me back. I know you guys missed me donât pretendâ at the sound of her voice multiple heads turn and a lot of cheers were shared before the team one by one hugged the former teammate. There were familiar faces and new faces.
âOh. Andrea this are our new team members. Ashley and, I think you already know Danteâ Hailey introduced
âNice to meet you, Ashleyâ âLikewise, Detective Halstead. Iâve heard a lot about you from your former partnerâ -that would be Kim- Andrea smiled at her best friend who smiled back
âHi Danteâ
Andrea said turning to Dante who shared a smile with Andrea while hugging each other slightly. Andrea had only seen him once before she left given that she spend most of the time after his arrival being undercover. Nonetheless Jay had shared a lot about the young man with his wife, plus Dante often calls Jay -they had managed to turn into friends/ mentor-alumni-.
âLook at you!â Kim smiled as she caressed Andreas baby bump, Hailey following suit
âYeah. I ate a watermelon seed. Guess what Adam used to say itâs trueâ Andrea giggled as she shrugged her shoulders making the team groan in response,
âAtta girlâ Adam giving her a high five in response while the other chuckled
âHow are you guys? How is Jay?â Kevin question was met with a beaming Andrea but before she could answer, her phone rang making her laugh before she answered it
âHey! Look who I ran intoâ Andrea said as she turned her phone showing the intelligence unit who had video called -their friend-.
âHey man! Looking good!â Kevin addressed first, followed by other greetings
âI am good. Howâs my girl? Is she alright, arrived with all her beautiful self and the precious cargo intact?â Andrea rolled her eyes as the team laughed. After an hour of talking to Jay catching up and sharing events that he had missed it was time to hang up.
âHey, yo, guys sorry to ruin it but theyâre calling meâ Jay said waving at his friends
âBe safe, manâ Adam said
âWill be. You be careful dumbass. Can I talk to my wife please and thank youâ Jay said, as Kevin called Andrea. She started walking into the break room before her face appeared on the screen making Jay beam before winking at her, this being met with her chuckles.
âBe careful, babyâ Andrea said sighing
âAlways. Iâll be back at the house before you arrive. I love you both!â he said smiling
âI love you too! See you soonâ she smiled as he hung up
Gazing out at the bullpen, she looked at the new and old faces. Andrea smiled knowing that no matter how much time went by, this, this right here wouldnât change.

Walking across the stage of your high school graduation ceremony you felt blessed. Looking through the crowd for your family and beaming as you made eye contact with your dad. Jay felt proud of you, as proud as he could be, his daughter had accomplished one life goal in a long list of good things to come. Right at his side was your uncle Will and Hailey -your dadâs girlfriend- the other two people who meant the absolute world to you right here sharing this moment with you. As the students reunited with their families you ran to yours tackling your dad in a big embrace which he returned immediately.
âThereâs my girl. Letâs get to Mollyâsâ he whispered the first part to only you and looked at his brother and girlfriend nodding as a sign to leave.
âWait Mollyâs?â you asked confused as Hailey threw her arm around your shoulders guiding you out to the parking lot
âYep, Trudy and I went all out on your celebration party. Everyone put a little of their own help in itâ she said chuckling as she remembered Trudy barking orders at the girls from Med, PD and CFD
âYou guys didnât have too, honestlyâ you said shyly as you all reach your dadâs truck. Smiling slightly as you heard your uncle scoff from beside you
âNonsense, you deserve itâ Will responded winking at you and kissing your head before you all climbed into the truck pulling off to the familiar bar.
You couldnât be more grateful because even though life had thrown stones in your way you had finally graduated from high school and one step closer to your life goals. Knowing you owed everything to your dad who hadnât given a second thought to always saying present to every moment of your life. You were blessed to have not only your immediate family -uncle Will, your dad and his girlfriend Hailey- but you were also part of a bigger family which was your Chicago chosen family.
Here's the thing, a little back story, when your âmotherâ found out she was pregnant she made it clear from that moment that she wouldnât be a part of your life. You knew that a couple of weeks after you were born she packed her stuff and left with no trace behind. Your dad had shared the story when you were mature enough to understand both sides of the story and to know that it hadnât been your fault she left, making sure you knew you werenât guilty of it.
She had her own struggles with depression and addiction but thatâs a story for another time, she wasnât prepared to be a mother period. Jay tried looking for her but at the end he gave up if she didnât want to be part of your life then that was on her. You thrived nonetheless, which brought you to the now, all of your family in one place. Each people in their own conversations but nonetheless being in the moment to celebrate you.
âHereâs to my beautiful, smart and not so baby girl. Iâm so proud of the young woman you turn out to be. I couldnât be happier to call you my daughter. To Y/N!â Jay spoke raising his beer at you as the Intelligence table -plus Will- cheered for you.
âThanks dadâ you said as you wrapped your arms around his waist tucking yourself in his chest as he pecked your head.
âLove you babyâ whispered as he caressed your back slightly
Because you had turned out better than he initially thought possible. Even if most times he doubted himself as a single father you both managed to make it work and today was prove of all of it.
Everything was going smoothly, you had gone around the bar sharing laughs with some of 51 and med. Until a strange and uninvited guest appeared through Mollyâs door, Jay instantly tensed up at the sight of the woman. She mustâve been familiar to the people on the bar because everything went silent and there was an uncomfortable feeling lingering. As she made eye contact with you, she proceeded to get closer making you take a step back -you didnât know who she was-. Your dad and uncle took a step in front of you, Hailey rushing to your side while you took her hand.
âWhat the hell are you doing here?â Jay harshly said,
âY/N baby. Itâs me, momâ she ignored Jay, talking directly to you.
At the words she spoke your eyes widened looking at the back of your dadâs head. He shook his head, jaw tense and a glare on his face -not believing the audacity of the woman-. How dare she? Come back after 17 years and pretend nothing happened. No one dared say anything but you knew the feelings were all mutual, everyone felt some kind of way towards the woman standing a couple of feet in front of you.
âYou lost that privileged a long time agoâ Will said, glancing over his shoulder making sure his niece was alright
âSarah, I think you should leaveâ Kelly spoke trying to de-escalate the situation. There were too many emotions running high and he wanted to protect you from it all, as everyone else.
âCâmon Y/N. The least you can do is help me! Iâm ready to be your mom.â she said almost hatefully, making you flinch slightly
âHey, cut it out-â Jay yelled said before being interrupted by you
âSeriously!â you said tears in your eyes that you refused to let free as you looked at Sarah, a relieved look crossed her face -she really thinks Iâll pretend too- you thought
âHoney-â she said trying to reach for you being met with Jay pushing her hand away
âDonât even think about itâ he said warningly, towering over her shaking his head
âIâm her mother, besides I just need a couple of dollarsâ she said scoffing, which broke your heart along with the shaky breath that left your lips.
She wasnât here for you, she just needed money. It made you sadder at the thought of looking at the woman who gave birth to you standing here and not feeling anything familiar towards her. She was a stranger, a stranger with a biological tittle that at the end of this night didnât mean anything at all.
âNo. Itâs too late. Are you serious right now?â you exclaimed a pissed look on your face mixed sadness
âGet over it Y/N, I wasnât readyâ she said rolling her eyes
âAnd you think dad was!? Do you think he was ready to be a dad and a mom for me! Do you think I was ready to grow up without a mom. Huh?â
âY/N, Iâm here now, am I not?â she answered nonchalantly shrugging her shoulders
âYou donât get to abandon your daughter and then show up 17 years later pretending it didnât happen! Are you kidding me Sarahâ the situation was turning into a screaming match and everyone knew it wouldnât end well.
âIâm your mother!â she yelled pointing at you stepping towards you
âHey! Donât yell at my daughterâ Jay shouted on top of her screams putting his hand in front of you to prevent her from coming any closer. Sarah was about to say something to Jay when you interrupted her
âNo! You are selfish! Not everyone that gives birth is a mother youâre living prove of it! She is my mother, she is my mother too and her, and her. Every woman in this place is my mother! I donât need you to come and try to fix things and pretend weâre familyâŠcan you please leave!â you exclaimed as tears rolled down your cheeks
âYou!â she pointed angrily at Jay and then looked at Hailey with hatred in her eyes. She saw how you held hands with her and she felt replaced, not that it mattered.
âYou made my daughter cry. You better leave now!â Jay pointed towards the door before starting to go back towards you
Now standing next to you his arm around your shoulders running his hand up and down your arm as you rested your head on his shoulder. The others tried to slightly guide Sarah out of the bar, but of course she didnât want to leave without making a scene.
âYou think youâre special. What are you, my replacement!â she screamed at Hailey, as Will and Kelly tried to guide her out of the bar. This made the detective leave her spot from beside you stepping towards Sarah, now toe to toe with the woman. The force of Haileyâs glare made her recoil slightly, Hailey was intimidating when she wanted to be. Â
âThere was nothing to replace. Leave. Nowâ Hailey said in a tone so cold it made shivers go down your spine.
âIâll kick her ass if she doesnât leave chucklesâ Trudy said unamused as she stood next to Hailey arms crossed matching her usual cold tone and stoic face
âYou wonât be doing it alone, Platt!â Leslie said from the bar, making Gabby and Kim nod in agreement
âDamn right!â Maggie commented from one of the other tables agreeing with her friends
If Sarah wanted to make a big deal, they were ready turn it into a big deal. You had practically the whole city at your corner and they would have your back no matter what. Because while the man were âpolitelyâ trying to get Sarah out the woman were ready to jump the woman.
With one last look towards your figure tucked at your dadâs side she scoffed turning around and leaving.
âAndâŠthe witch is gone!â Adam yelled, making everyone chuckle slightly, including you.
âI think you meant the bitch!â Leslie muttered but since the bar was so silent her comment was heard by everyone in the bar.
Gabby elbowed Shay giving her a âare you seriousâ look and gesturing towards you. Because after all she was still the woman who gave birth to you and the last thing they wanted was to offend you or make you feel worse.
âShit. Iâm sorry Y/N, sheâs not a bitchâ she shook her head raising her hands in surrender as you gave her a small smile.
âNah I think she is a bitchâ you agreed,
âHey. Swear jar missâ Jay said looking down amusedly at you while everyone tried not to laugh, slowly returning to their own conversations.
Jay guided you to the table and sat next to you thinking how Sarah had ruined the night for you, he wished he could change things like this, but sometimes they were inevitable. Hailey sat on the other side taking your hand and giving it a slight squeeze to which you smiled before letting go.
âDamn sarge. I wanted to see you throw handsâ Kevin said to Trudy as she passed next to the intelligence table ruffling your hair teasingly and winking before walking back to Mouch.
âEven I was ready to throw hands and I donât even know the womanâ Vanessa said raising her hand, while you laughed.
As the table started talking between themselves Jay glanced at you caressing your head at the contact you too glanced at him.
âYou okay, hon?â he asked low enough to just be heard by the both of you. You smiled nodding
âSo thatâs Sarah, huhâ you sighed, Jay following suit
âIâm sorryâ he turned his eyes away sadly before meeting your eyes again
âDonât be dad. Now that I met herâŠIâm really glad she didnât raised me. I wouldnât change my life for anything dad. You are the main reason I am, who I turned out to be todayâ you said resting your head on his shoulder as he sighed. Resting his head on top of yours and closing his eyes trying to hold the tears,
âAnd you are my greatest accomplishment. From this point on Iâll just be prouder of you than I already Iâmâ a smile on his face, that you matched. As your head still rested on your dadâs shoulder your eyes casted around the bar, looking at the faces and all the people that had made your life as blessed as you couldâve wished.

You knew he was different from the first time you interacted with him. Meeting by your friend Kim, who is on the same unit as your boyfriend. And quite frankly you had given up on love, plus you had other responsibilities that not many people would accept. But he was unique in his own way a truly loving soul and tonight proved it, yet again.
Almost 10 pm and your 2-year-old daughter Olivia or Livy was not in the mood to sleep. You had been bouncing her in your arms and signing softly but she is stubborn so of course, not working. -God, sleep is glorious, why donât you wanna sleep?- you thought to yourself
âPlease Livy, I really need a breakâ you whispered as she cried her little eyes out your were getting tired and frustrated.
Just as you were about to call it quits the front door of your house opened making you sigh in relief as Jay walked in a bouquet of flowers on his hand, walking over to you kissing you softly.
âHi beautiful. Hey- whatâs wrong?â his happy expression morphed into concern as he saw your teared up eyes still bouncing Livy as she started crying again.
âI need to tap out. Pleaseâ you whispered trying not to cry, but it was frustrating and kind of heart breaking to not be able to get your baby to sleep.
Jay immediately understood nodding his head and taking Livy from your arms. As started biting your nails nervously tears now rolling down your cheeks. Livy had tucked her face in his chest and snacking her little arms around his neck and you were grateful. So, so grateful that this man had taken the role of a father even though his blood didnât run through her veins. Â
âBabe donât cryâ he said softly furrowing his eyebrows as his hand came to caress your cheekbone. Heâs a good one for sure, which made you want to cry even more.
âIâm tryingâŠIâm trying really hardâ you breath out as you brushed the tears
âI know honey. Hey- I got her. Donât worry. Take a breatherâ with that you went to the kitchen.
You busied yourself putting the dishes away. Not knowing how much time had passed when you only heard silence so you made your way back to the living room, confused. It was empty. As you were about to call for Jay a muffled voice and a set of giggles was heard from Livyâs room.
Coming to stand on the doorway your heart melted at the sight in front of you. Livy was fighting against sleep but it was clear sleep was winning. You chuckled into your hand as quietly as you could,
âMy little angelâ Jay said, loving eyes as he rested his head slightly on top of hers rocking her side to side
âDa-daâ your heart stopped as you heard what your daughter had blabbered to Jay before she succumbed to sleep. You quietly looked at Jay, he hadnât moved he only could beam.
âGod, youâre killing meâ he whispered before putting her in her crib pulling her blankie towards her. Pushing yourself off the doorframe you walked towards his hunched figure as he towered over Livyâs resting form. Wrapping your arms around his waist and kissing his shoulder blade which made Jay sigh draping his arms on top of yours while you both looked down at the little angel.
âGod I love her. Iâm so fucking gratefulâ he said in between chuckles, his gaze still locked on Livy as he smiled.
âShe loves you more than you think, Jay. I love youâ âI love you bothâ

-----------
It wasnât planned. Aubrey hadnât expect to have a crush on the handsome detective in the Intelligence Unit, nor would she express anything to him given he was in a happy relationship with his partner -Hailey- who was a newfound friend and confident of Aubreyâs. Aubrey was just the receptionist of the respected unit. But it happened about 8 months ago Jay and Hailey separated, two months ago Aubrey and Jay started dating. At the beginning things were fine between the three, given they were all being mature and moving on. But things started changing, Hailey no longer treated Aubrey like a friend, just like a coworker, they both kept it civil.
A couple of hours ago Jay and Aubrey decided to share the news with the team, they were expecting a baby. Everyone congratulated the new couple, surprisingly this included Hailey. Because even though the couple had been together for just two months, they were happy, but now, Aubrey felt strangely nervous -more than usual-. By the end of the day, she had gone to the bathroom, no one noticing she had gone there, given there were only four people left in the bullpen. Aubrey heard other voices coming from outside the stalls.
âI donât understand, we were fine. Not civil, we used to be friends. Does she hate me?â that was Haileyâs voice. At this Aubrey tried her best to be still and listen, who were they talking about?
âYou know sheâs just possessive and jealous. What a way to tie him. Such a bitch moveâ -Nat? the patrol woman- Â now Aubrey was confused as hell. She always felt something odd about the woman.
âCâmon Nat. Donât call her that. Plus, theyâre happy. Iâm happy and- I mean- I donât know do you think it would be cool to talk to her. To clear things, itâs just this vibe Iâm sensing itâs not like herâ Hailey sternly said to Nat, before asking the question.
âNo. Are you really going to stoop that low, to talk to her. She hates you; you know! She told me herselfâŠâ Nat said in a taunting voice.
There Aubrey realized that it wasnât Hailey being weird, it was this chick telling Hailey lies. Finally, Aubrey built the courage to step out of the stall, serious look on her face and a glare directed specially to Nat. Haileyâs face changed instantly from concerned about the situation to stoic.
âHey- Aubrey. How are you? Congrats on the babyâ âCut the bullshit Natâ Aubrey said interrupting the rat.
âAubrey thatâs enough. Donât start itâ Hailey warningly said,
âWhat exactly am I starting? Cause we were fine around each other until a couple of months agoâ Aubrey asked, eyebrows furrowed as she looked at Hailey
âProbably stealing her manâ Nat muttered under her breath.
âThat bullshit. You were okay with me dating Jay! We talked about it, and you said it was done and brushed. You knew I wouldnât have made a move towards a relationship with Jay without discussing it with you, I care about our friendship. And then you started acting like a bitchâ Aubrey exclaimed,
âNat told me everything. You donât need to lie!â Hailey matched Aubreyâs tone
âWhat? That sheâs a shit talking bitch. And a big fat liar on top of everything?â Aubrey continued, taking a step forward,
âWho are you calling fat? Thatâs going to be you on a couple of months!â Nat exclaimed taking a step towards Aubreyâs short frame, while the latter kept arguing.
âWoah, woah. No! We are not doing this. She is pregnant Nat and as much as she may hate me. Iâm not letting you touch her!â Hailey exclaimed on top of the bickering, stepping in between both woman raising her hands.
âHate you? Who the hell said that?â Aubrey asked. Of course, she knew the truth, after all she heard their conversation completely, she just wanted Hailey to figure it out herself.
âNat-â she said in an obvious way, pointing to the other woman in the room, who had recoiled slightly away.
âHailey! You wanna know the truth. I never said anything about you. To anyone, not even Nat. We donât even talk. Quite frankly I donât trust her assâ Aubrey exclaimed raising her hands and widening her eyes.
âWai- what? Nat?â Hailey turned to look at the other woman arms crossed matching Aubreyâs glare. Before it could be discussed, Aubrey felt a pressure on her abdomen that made her gasp. This gaining back the attention of both woman.
âAubrey? Are you okay. Should I call Jay?â Hailey asked reaching for the pregnant woman, with a nod from Aubrey,
âJay!â Hailey screamed at the top of her lungs, sending Nat a murderous look. She was going to get what she deserved. Â
In the bullpen, that was almost empty, apart from Jay, Kim and Trudy; they had heard some mumbling from the bathroom, before a scream reached their ears. This send the trio into an alert state, running towards the scream and reaching the bathroom. Being met with a patrol woman rushing out and Hailey grabbing Aubreyâ frame.
âWhat happened? What did you do?!â Jay asked panicked as he reached for his girlfriend, yelling at Hailey,
âI- Jay I swear-â âJayâŠâ Aubrey managed to breath out the words shaking her head slightly, making sure he didnât murder the poor blonde. At her voice Jay softened his eyes before looking at Aubrey with a concerned look.
âBaby. What do you need?â he said grabbing her hands in support.
âI canât move Jayâ she panted while Jay caressed her hair. Unknown to them Hailey was briefly explaining the situation to Trudy and Kim.
âI knew it! I knew she was shadyâ Kim muttered, cracking her knuckles readying herself
âNot the time Burgess. Go take them to the ED. Keep me posted, Hailey and I will handle everything hereâ Trudy said giving orders to the young woman.
âIt hurts JayâŠâ Aubrey cried breathing heavily,
âI know. I know, sorry. Iâm sorryâ Jay whispered in her ear kissing her forehead. As he bridal carried her to the waiting car.
A couple of hours later, they were at Aubreyâs place. She had been sent home, on the condition of a lot of rest -no exceptions-. They had been talking cuddle on the couch when the doorbell rang,
âI got itâ Jay said standing up, but when he opened the door, he came face to face with Hailey.
âWhat?â he asked, no emotion on his voice,
âJay. I know Iâm the last person you want to see. But I swear to you I would never hurt her. It was all a misunderstanding from my part. I just- listen I came to apologize, you can just send me away, but I would really appreciate if you let me say sorry to her. And to youâ
âHaileyâŠâ Jay started, shaking his head
âPlease Jay. I really want to fix this. As a friendâ she looked directly at him, nervously.
âFine, but if anything happensâŠâ he sighed before turning serious at the last part
âYou can kick me out, end of discussionâ she interrupted, nodding
She wasnât a bad person; she just trusted the wrong one. Hailey truly missed her partner and her friend -well before everything exploded in their faces-. Stepping into the living room, Aubrey faced them both confused, before looking at Jay who gave her a small smile.
âIâll be in the kitchen. If you need anything just shoutâ he said to Aubrey before walking away leaving both woman alone.
âHiâ Hailey gave her a sad smile
âHeyâ Aubrey responded signaling for her to sit on the other couch.
âIâm sorry. For everything I did and said about youâŠâ âHaileyâ Aubrey tried to interject,
âNo. I know. Just let me take responsibility for what I did. I trusted the wrong person and I hurt you in the process. Hurt Jay and couldâve hurt your baby. I- Iâm really truly sorry for the part I took in all of it. You were right, we were friends once. And I would really love to go back to that, even if it takes longer for us to trust each other againâ Hailey said, looking down at the coffee table as she finished talking.
âHails. You really need to check your taste in friendsâ Aubrey said jokingly.
âYeah. I know. Didnât make the mistake before so I thought it would be fine. Guess I was wrongâ she responded trying not to laugh
âYa think!â both chuckling
âI accept your apology. And Iâm sorry for my part as well. Even though it wasnât even our faultâ Aubrey said quietly.
âYouâre right I should choose better on my taste of friendsâ Hailey groaned as they both chuckled. There was a moment of silence,
âItâs the baby alright?â Hailey shyly asked
âYes. Turns out Iâm far longer than I expected. But itâs a high risk one, so, rest and more rest to comeâ Aubrey smiled at Hailey, who gave her an apologetic one.
âHey. Are we good? It got quietâ Jay asked stepping out of the kitchen an amused look on his face.
âWe discussed Haileyâs bad taste on friendsâ Aubrey teasingly said, smirking at Hailey who laughed a bit.
âBut weâre good. Right?â Aubrey asked smiling slightly at Hailey
âRightâ
