Uncle and Niece
Characters: Will Halstead x Daughter!Reader, Jay Halstead x Niece!Reader, Adam Ruzek, Kelly Severide, Sylvie Brett, Antonio Dawson
Warnings: Nothing
Summary: Everyone is introduced to the uncle and niece duo.
A/N: The ending of this was very rushed because it got really awkward and I didn't want it to get to long. I dont really like this but I am posting this in celebration of me getting my first job!!!!
*****
Jay hummed to himself, idly scrolling through his phone reading some messages while he took the occasional sip of his coffee. He managed to get a full night sleep without getting woken up by someone calling about a crime scene, allowing him to wake up earlier than usual.
Making sure everything was clean and clear, Jay clipped his gun and badge to his belt, slipping on his jacket but before he could open the door on his own accord, his doorbell rung, confusing him as to who would be at his apartment at this time.
With caution, Jay opened to door and was surprised to be met with a frantic looking Will. The doctors hair was a total mess, bags under his eyes, his coat haphazardly put on over his scrubs, his bag just about sitting on his shoulder with his hand clutching a smaller hand.
"I am so sorry but I need a really big favour man." Will said, panting as he just about managed to get all his words out. He looked like hell but his little girl on the other hand, no a single hair of hers was out of place.
Looking back and forth from the father and daughter duo, Jay eventually connected the dots, sighing as he did so. Going through all the possible scenarios in his head as to what the worse would happen if he went forward with this really big favour.
"The daycare at Med isn't open and no one is available to babysit but I had no idea you were working. You know what? Leave it, it's fine, forget I ever asked." Will rambled, only now noticing that Jay was leaving for work.
"Dude, it's fine." Jay shook his head, huffing as though he was hurt at Will trying to leave. "I'll take her to work with me. Everyone will love her and it'll be our first official time hanging out together."
"You sure?" Will replied, apprehensive as he let go of Faith's hand, letting her hold Jay's instead. "I owe you man."
"Nah, it's fine." Jay shook his head again, smiling down at his niece. "We'll have fun at the precinct."
"Alright Faith, be good for Uncle Jay Jay, okay? Make sure he stays out of trouble." Will said, bending down so he was eye level with his daughter. A smile she inherited from him plastered her lips as she bid her goodbyes, pressing a loving kiss on his cheek as she waved him away.
"Bye daddy! I love you too much!" Faith shouted down the hallway, watching Will hurry into the elevator, not wanting to be late. "I love you!"
"I love you too baby!" Will shouted in reply, enthusiastically reciprocating her wave which totally contrasted his completely messed up appearance.
With the elevator doors closing, Jay and Faith were left alone for the first time in both their lives. Looking down at the three year old, the three year old craning her neck to look up at her thirty something uncle, she gave him a toothy grin sending this weird feeling in Jay's gut. All of a sudden, he felt this strong urge to protect this little being with all his livelihood no matter what the universe sent this way. It was weird.
"Okay, let's go to work."
*****
For the entire car ride, without being prompted to, Faith was rambling on about anything that came to mind and Jay was intently listening even though he struggled to make out a few words. Faith spoke about her toys, her amazing father and how excited she was now that she was three since it was her birthday a month before Will suddenly showed up in Chicago.
With her much smaller hand in his, it was weird as to how something so small could exist but it was a miracle it could, the uncle and niece duo walked into the 21st precinct. Jay patiently held her hand at all times as she took one step at a time, the steps were much bigger than the normal ones she was used to but she denied any of his help.
Before Jay could make a clean escape, making a dash towards the metal gates, he was stopped by a very familiar voice causing him to come to a halt, screwing his eyes shut at the impending doom he was about to face.
"Chuckles, what do you have here?" Trudy projected, her hands on her hips when she noticed the tiny human being accompanying one of her detectives.
"Sargent, this is my brothers daughter Faith. Remember Will? The doctor?" Jay replied apprehensively, crossing his fingers he wouldn't get reemed in the middle of the district.
"Sure, anyways, Faith is an amazing name for such an adorable girl." Trudy, shrugged it off, leaning over the desk as she started gushing over the toddler. "I see your uncle missed out on those beautiful red locks, disappointing really."
Faith smiled, giggling despite not understanding what Trudy meant but Jay did and he felt slightly offended. "Okayy and that's enough for one day, we'll be upstairs if you need us sarge."
"It's time to say bye now Faith. Say bye Trudy!"
"Bye Bye!" Faith smiled, waving at the older woman who unbeknownst to her had become the most amazing person in the three year olds eyes.
*****
Whoever came up into intelligence, their footsteps could be heard against the wood flooring, allowing all the detectives to know who was coming up based on the force or speed but this was confusing.
There was definitely more than one person, one being bigger than the other but both going at the same slow pace. No one was able to make out who it was till they made an appearance.
Finally, after what seemed like forever, Jay and Faith made it to the top of the staircase and were in the bullpen. For Jay, it was nothing amazing and he was here everyday, it was basically his second home but for Faith, it was both scary but amazing.
"Woah! Who's incredibly adorable kid did you kidnap?" Adam teased, a smirk on his face, being the first to notice the little girl that no one knew. Getting up from his spinning chair, he set down his coffee and leaned against his desk to get a better look at the duo.
"Jay, you never told us you had a daughter." Erin said accusingly, also smirking as she joined in the teasing. She was slightly shocked but easily hid it along with her confusion and slight irritation.
"Her name is Faith and she's my niece." Jay said with some pride, introducing Faith to all his colleagues. "My brother put me on babysitting today, so I expect all of you to be on your best behaviour."
"Sir yes sir." Adam's smirk didn't falter, walking towards the pair, bending down so he could offer his hand. "It's lovely to meet you Faith, I'm Adam."
"Hi." Faith replied, taking his hand confidently but she didn't move, simply holding it. She smiled at him, flashing a toothy grin in his direction. "Are you a superhero like Jay Jay too?"
"Indeed I am, aren't you smart?" Adam said rhetorically, pushing himself up so everyone else could talk to you. "We're gonna get along great."
"So Adam's already introduced himself." Jay rolled his eyes, pointing at Adam who stood proudly with his hands in his pocket. "This is Antonio, Erin, Al and my boss is Hank. They're all detectives like me."
At his last five words, Faith's whiskey coloured eyes automatically brightened and everyone noticed. She shuffled on her feet, her eyes sparkling in wonder as she looked at them all.
"Hey, you wanna hear a funny story about your uncle cause I've got too many." Antonio spoke up, smiling at the widening smile on the three-year-olds face at the mention of stories. Without a second thought, her hand was out of Jay's grasp and she walked straight to the Latino who picked her up, sitting her on his desk.
Besides Hank and Al, Antonio had the most and probably best experience with children and it definitely showed.
With a soft smile, Jay watched as the senior detective divuldged into a most likely embarrassing story before he walked away, slipping past Erin and moving towards Hank who he had much to explain to.
*****
Thanking all the forces in power today, Jay's brows scrunched in confusion at the purple hair tie that had somehow ended up around his fingers, a cute plastic flower cheaply glued to the front of it.
Throughout the day, Faith had been given a tour of the bullpen and even had the chance of manning the front desk with Trudy when intelligence went out.
It was just after lunch and Faith had woken up from a very good nap, the painless indentations on her face proving such. But, her hair had gotten completely messed up and Jay was now stuck.
Faith giggled at the confusion painting her uncles face, the adorable sounds washing away any of the impatience Jay just had. It was crazy how the toddler made him feel, even though she wasn't his own child.
"You know what, you look great Faith." Jay shrugged, tucking her red curls behind her ears, patting down the uncontrolled frizz all around before picking her out of her carseat and gently setting her on the ground.
For the billionth time today, Faith found herself in awe of the firehouse. She had only ever seen them in her cartoons and despite her excitement, she could feel the nervousness bubbling in her stomach at how big everything was in real life.
As if sensing her miniscule amount of anxiety, Jay scooped the toddler into his arms dramatically and walked up the apron and into the firehouse where he could see squad sitting at their table.
Jay's sudden action shocked her, sending butterflies in her stomach as she shrieked, laughter easily following suit when he wouldn't set her down despite her poor pleas.
The sound of childish laughter interrupted any conversation happening at the squad table, all their heads turning to find the source and to say they were confused was the least they could say.
"Hey man, you good? Whose baby did you kidnap?" Kelly asked, getting up from his chair, giving the detective a typical bro hug while minding the toddler perched on his hip.
"You remember my brother right, he's a doctor at med." Jay said, continuing when the lieutenant nodded. "This is his daughter Faith. Faith, this is one of my friends Kelly, he's a firefighter. Can you say hi?"
"Why do you have a girls name if your a boy?"
Her innocent question shocked them all. Jay's eyes went wide as he stared at his niece, Kelly was a mix between laughter and shellshock while the three squad members immediately began laughing.
"Faith, I what-"
"Oh my gosh! Who is this beauty?" Sylvie said, preening at the sight of the girl as she exited the ambulance. "She looks exactly like the new doctor at Med you know. Oh yeah, did you know that he has the same surname as you Jay, crazy."
"That's my brother Sylvie and this is his daughter Faith." Jay replied with ease, a smile on his face at the rambling paramedic.
Before she could address the fact that he had a brother, she frowned as she cast eyes on Faith's unruly hair.
"Does she have a hair tie?"
"Yeah, it's here, why?"
"Give her here."
And with that, the blonde paramedic disappeared into the firehouse with his niece and her cheap hair tie gone from his wrist.
"Boden's waiting for you inside his office Jay."
"Oh yes! I actually have work to do. Thanks severide."

Deja Vu II
Part I
Okay so, I have been researching more and trying to get things at least somewhat accurate before I wrote part two. In the first part, I wrote TBI, with further research, what I was actually trying to write is an Anoxic brain Injury (still technically a TBI). The whole idea there is when the brain is starved of oxygen critical functions are impacted and there can be a whole bunch of differing symptoms after it. OBVIOUSLY, I am NOT a medical professional, so take everything with a big ol' grain of salt. I am thinking of writing some more parts to this but purely when I have time bc adult life sucks. I kept the ending open but also al actual end, unlike the first part. Hope it is somewhat enjoyable.
WARNINGS: Medical stay, seizures, talk of needles + medical procedures, hospitals, Will and Jay being their usually angsty selves, poor writing and zero editing
Tumblr media
"Will?"
Abrams looked between the Halsteads, not sure what his place was. Everyone remembered when Pat Halstead passed, mostly because the Halstead brawl was talked about for weeks. Will Halstead was known for causing headaches for plenty of people around Med, he was the topic of gossip all through the building.
Abrams was saved by the bell - literally. His pager started beeping, excusing him from the brewing storm between the brothers.
"I'll put in for the tests," He tossed over his shoulder, disappearing into the stream of medical workers.
"Will." Jay snapped, glowering at his brother.
Will scrubbed a hand down his face, "Abrams needs to run more tests."
"More tests?" Jay pressed, "What just happened, Will?"
Will shook his head, looking at his younger brother he knew, telling Jay how bad this might be, would destroy him. Jay hated hospitals, hated medical things in general. Will couldn't look him in the eye and plant the same fear he had gnawing at him.
"I don't know, Jay," Will sighed, "I'm not a neurologist."
Jay didn't want to accept his answer, but Will didn't give him much of a chance. He turned back to your hospital room, forcing a smile as he entered.
"What was that about?" You asked, exactly where they left you.
"Just more tests," Will smiled. He stopped at the top of your bed, checking you over with doctor's eyes. You could always tell when he flipped between Big Brother and Doctor because Big Brother Will wore his emotions. Doctor Will was better at keeping his poker face like he was now.
Will's eyes flittered around the monitors before settling back on yours. His eyes softened, the slight furrow in his brow disappearing and a smile pulling on his lips again.
"You feeling alright?"
You nodded, "I'm just tired."
Will nodded, he reached out and brushed the hair off your forehead, "Get some sleep, yeah? We'll be here the whole time."
Jay reached out and squeezed your hand, before pulling up the blanket and tucking you in.
Tumblr media
A few hours later, you were sitting up in your hospital bed while a Neurology Tech attached electrodes to your scalp. Jay had left for home, for a shower and clean clothes. He promised he would bring back your blanket and pillow and some other stuff to make you more comfortable, seeming Will said it would be okay.
While he was gone, Will sat at the end of the bed, holding your hand through the Electrode placement. After the Tech finished, you were attached to a monitor with wires upon wires, all differing colours. The tech apologized for the cap that sat over all the leads, promising it wasn’t too bad.
“it’s a new fashion trend,” you joked, smiling at the tech, “Nuero floor chic.”
The tech laughed, continuing her work. When she was done, she walked you through what she had done. Explaining the placement and the leads, and how it all worked.
"This is your personal EEG," She explained, gesturing to the boxy machine on wheels that your wires were attached to, "Try to keep it close."
She explained a few more things, then promised to return in a little while. In her absence, Dr. Abrams stopped through again. He looked over the techs work, mumbling to himself and making medical comments only Will understood.
"How are you feeling?" He asked.
You had already taken a nap, so you weren't as tired as you had been.
"Sick of sitting," You said, stretching your legs and accidentally nudging Will in the process. Will playfully batted at your feet, feigning offence.
Abrams pulled at the EEG machine on wheels, testing how the wheels glided, "If you are feeling up for it, you can go for a small walk."
You lit up, "I can?"
"If you take it slow," Abrams ordered, "And Will is by your side."
Will nodded, "Are you feeling up for it?"
"Yes."
Will helped you detangle yourself from the blanket, letting you adjust to being fully upright for the first time that day. Your feet dangled over the bed as you took a moment to compose your spinning head. Will pulled a pair of socks over your bare feet, muttering something about keeping your toes warm. He held your arm as you stood up, supporting your weight as your body adjusted again.
"You alright?"
"Mmm," You responded, focused on staying upright.
"Okay," Will wrapped an arm around your waist, "One step at a time, we'll try to make it to the nurse's station and back."
It was slow going. With every step you took, it felt like the world was twisting, like walking through an earthquake. Will's arms hovered around you, only holding you up when you needed the support. He was so steady in his support, his warm presence keeping you grounded and calm.
Two steps outside of your room, Jay bounded up with your pillow and blanket tucked under his arm.
"They're upright," He commented, "Nice hair, too."
He reached out and pretended to ruffle your hair, careful to avoid touching the wires around your head. You reached out to smack his hand, but missed drastically.
You frowned at Jay, frustration barely contained, "Sshut. uphh."
The words sounded fumbled through your gritted teeth. Abrams had mentioned how you needed to take things slow and Will tried to tell you that it might be frustrating at first, but you weren’t expecting to feel such anger. It was gnawing away at you. A week ago you were dancing around with Makayla, wrangling her for a weekend while Kim and Adam worked. You had run around, danced, sung, every little thing that made Makayla happy. Not you hardly knew how to move your feet, could hardly tell what direction was up.
The anger grew and held firm in your head, making itself known with its red cloud fogging your mind.
Will grabbed your hand, "You okay?"
"Hmm."
Your vision blurred, everything swaying and twisting as you fell forward.
Will was faster than Jay was, for once. He saw the signs a mile away, already braced for when you would fall. He held you to his chest, lowering both of you to the ground and cradling your head as your body started to convulse.
Jay immediately dropped what he was carrying, falling to his knees by your side. Jay looked up at Will trying to ask silently what to do, but the eldest Halstead had gone full doctor mode.
"Need some help over here!" Will shouted, calling for the nurse's assistance.
"I need you to breathe,” Will spoke with such certainty, like he was treating any other patient.
“You’re okay,” Will kept repeating, “Just breathe, I’ve got you.”
Jay was ushered out of the way by the nurses, who crowded in with monitors and equipment to help Dr Halstead. All Jay could do was watch helplessly.
Jay held his breath as the medical team got you off the ground and transferred you back to the hospital bed. The leads they had removed that morning were reattached, placed on your ashen skin.
Dr Abrams rushed into the room and ordered Will to get out of his way, the forced politeness gone now the situation was emergent. Will stepped back, somewhat dubiously, letting Abrams run his team.
“How did you do that?” Jay asked when will stood by his side, the pair of them watching as Abrams and the team worked.
With a dose of meds, the convulsions stopped, but the team checked over the leads and kept working.
“Do what?” Will asked, turning to look at his brother. Jay had grown pale, the fear and anxiety he felt spelt out across his features. His eyes kept darting from you to the heart monitor screen like it was going to flatline.
“Stay so calm?” Jay whispered, taking a deep breath for the first time in the last few minutes. The nurses placed a mask over your face, securing it behind your head and then leaving the Halsteads and Abrams in the room.
“Jay…” Will tried to find a way to explain it, how he could just shut off his fear in that moment to help you. But he couldn’t find the words.
“She’s stable,” Abrams spoke in the silence that had formed, “From now on, we’ll keep giving her (insert med) to keep her relaxed. No more strolls, even if it is supervised.”
Will nodded, taking it in.
Abrams was mostly speaking to Will, Jay was by your side, focused solely on you. He held your hand, careful to avoid the IV that was in the back of it. He watched you breathe, every-time you exhaled, he watched the mask fog up. He listened to the quiet puffs and the melodic beeping. You were okay. He kept trying to force himself to remember that. You were okay.
“Hopefully we can get this under control. In the meantime, we’ll keep monitoring, keep on with the EEG testing for the next few hours. Hopefully we’ll learn more.”
Will nodded, clapping Abrams on the back, “Thanks, Sam.”
The big brother in him wanted to press for answers, but the doctor in him knew that sometimes Doctors didn’t have the answers. If Abrams knew, he would share.
Will did a check over you and the monitors with his eyes, again. Then looked over to Jay, who looked completely deflated. It was no secret that Jay hated hospitals and medical treatment in general, especially needles. Spending time in hospitals usually gave him the creeps and he would always say to Will, “I don’t know how you do it, man.”
But Jay hadn’t complained even once. Not when he was watching the IV get put in your hand, or while you were attached to countless machines. Will knew it was because he felt hopeless. The same look that he wore at their dads bedside he wore now. Will stood and stared for a while, the memory playing in his mind in time with real life. This was different. You weren’t on life support like your father had been, things were different. That didn’t change the memories Will had of his dads last moments plaguing his mind.
“I stayed calm because i had too,” Will finally spoke. Jay looked up, watching his brother cross his arms over his chest and take a deep breath.
“I had to stay calm, for her.”
Jay shook his head, “I just froze, Will. And you-“
“Trained for years to react in medical emergency situations, spent years working the ER,” Will interrupted.
“Jay,” Will reached over the bed and gave jays shoulder a reassuring squeeze, “I do this every day. I know how to tune out the emotions and focus on medical stuff.”
“Yeah, I guess.”
Will sat on one of the chairs, mirroring Jay across the bed, “Listen. I could never get used to being shot at, could never be shot at and react how you do. Because I’m not trained, I’m not good at that. You aren’t a doctor Jay, stop beating yourself up over something that was a basic human reaction.”
Jay didn't answer, letting silence fall over the room. Neither one of the brothers was up for a conversation, mostly just consumed with their own thoughts as they watched you sleep.
You had stirred a few times in the coming hours but mostly stayed sleeping. Will told Jay that it was a combination of the medication and the stress of recent events catching up with you. In his words, it was nothing to worry about.
"Hey," A soft voice called from the door, Will and Jay stood to greet Hailey as she stepped into the room.
Will and Jay had been off work since you had gotten worse, staying by your side or close by ever since. Both Voight and Goodwin understood, giving them all the time they needed.
"I brought some supplies," Hailey joked, handing food over to the brothers, "And I stopped by home and Wills, got some clothes."
"Thanks, Hailey."
"Yeah, Of course." Hailey stood by Jay, taking his hand for his comfort. "How's she doing?"
Will relayed the events of the day, the incident in the hall and all the things that had happened since. Things were moving fast, more tests and hopeful treatment plans were being talked about.
"It'll be okay," Will finished, mostly trying to convince Jay more than himself. He knew the look on Abram's face, knew that everything was far from okay.
Tumblr media
Will told Jay to go back to work after a week, promising him that sitting by your side was a one-man job. Will had spoken to Goodwin, who agreed to let him take his occurred PTO for as long as he needed. So for the three weeks you were in the hospital he stayed by your side. You weren't used to having Will there every single minute of every single day, but you didn't mind it too much. Mostly he helped you go on walks or watched over you like a personal nurse. You knew that he and Jay were worried, but the overprotective brother act was suffocating at times. During the last week of your stay, you managed to convince him to let you have more space - that when he left the room you wouldn't make a break for it like Jay would. He agreed hesitantly, mostly hanging around from lunch until you fell asleep at night. You complained to Jay when he visited every day, but you were thankful he was there.
On the last few days of your time in the hospital, you were more independent, nothing like what you were before the accident, but more than before. You could walk small distances unsupported and some of your fine motor skills came back. The PT had told you it was common after TBI's for patients to lose control of their movements and motor skills, she promised that you would get better as time went on.
Dr Abrams had spoken to Will and Jay about Rehabilitation centres, there were a few in the city that focused on TBI rehabilitation but Will had been dragging his feet. Jay wanted to do what was best for you, even if it meant you might have to stay in a rehab facility. Will had a sour taste in his mouth over it all.
"Come in," Goodwin called from inside her office.
Will pushed open the door, greeting Sharon and Peter.
"What can I help you with, Doctor Halstead?" Sharon asked after Peter had left.
Will explained his plan, reviewing all the details he had sorted out. When he finished, Sharon was nodding in approval.
"Are you sure about this?"
"I am," Will was sure nothing could change his mind now.
"Okay then, I will talk to Dr Archer, and see how we can help," Goodwin bid Will the best, letting him continue on his way.
Will met Jay right outside your room, almost running straight into him.
"Will," Jay grabbed his brother's arm, "We need to talk about the rehab facility-"
"Yeah," Will nodded, "I know, i have a plan."
Will ushed Jay back into the room. He gestured to Jay to a chair and took a seat at the end of your bed. You were expecting him to stop by, sitting up properly on the bed expecting some kind of serious conversation from the eldest Halstead.
"What is it, doc?" You joked.
Will smiled, reaching out and holding your hand, "I have spoken to Dr Abrams and Sharon Goodwin and I have decided that we won't be trying to find a rehab facility."
Jay sighed, he had been arguing with Will about this for the better part of the week. "Will-"
"I think you should stay with me," Will told you directly, "I've taken a leave of absence, I think you should be home and recovering."
You looked to Jay, who was just as surprised. Jay hardly got caught off guard by Will, right now he had never been more surprised.
"Are you sure?" Jay broke the silence that settled over the room.
"If that is what you want?"
You could feel the joy blooming in your chest, a wide smile breaking across your face, "Yes. Please, yes."
Will mirrored your grin, pulling you into a tight hug and kissing your forehead. At times like this, you were reminded how much Will and Jay became like parents to you after your father's death. Although it was painful for all of you, you didn't have a good relationship with your father. He was never caring or affectionate, he never came to your sports games or awards, that was all Jay and Will. They stepped up and took care of you, they always have and promised they always would. You were so drained from the last few days of tests and the week in the hospital that you felt like you might burst into tears.
Will could sense your fragile state, staying sitting by your side and holding your hand. Jay got to his feet and pulled you into a hug too, then clapped Will on the back.
“So when am I allowed out?” You pressed, hoping to be home and somewhere familiar.
“Slow your roll,” Jay laughed, “There's still things that need to be organized.”
You let out a loud dramatic sigh, “I hate it here,” You whined.
Will wrapped an arm around your shoulders, pulling you into him and playfully messing up your hair, “It won't be too much longer, promise.”
“Pinky promise?” You raised your finger, dramatically pouting.
Will indulged you, linking his pinky through yours and giving you a serious stare, “Pinky promise.”

“Y/N, truth or dare.” Ethan asks from across the table at Molly’s.
Most of you guys from the hospital decided drinks after shift would be fun, but now that they’re bringing in games, this isn’t going to end well for you.
Sucking in a deep breath you scrunch your nose in response, “Sorry, but I think it’s time for me to go home!” You say a little sarcastically because you don’t want to leave, but you don’t want to play the game.
“No, no, no, no, you’re not leaving me here with these maniacs.” Natalie said grabbing the back of your coat and sitting you back into your chair.
You glanced around the table of your colleagues and sighed. Whatever.
You and Ethan were sitting across from each other on the end of the table. Will sitting next to Ethan, and Natalie sitting next to you. Maggie sitting next to Will closest to the wall, then finally Connor sitting next to Natalie across from Maggie.
“Herrmann, get me another shot!” You yelled from across the bar earning a thumbs up and an eye roll before looking back at Ethan.
“You’re on. Dare.” You say confidently as Herrmann sets down another shot of tequila in front of you.
“I dare you to try and get as many phone numbers as you can from guys in this bar in under 2 minutes. Depending on how many you get is what determines your punishment.” Ethan says with a coy smile making your jaw drop.
“Woah, punishment?” You ask a little lost.
“Like if you get 5 or less, you take 3 shots, 6-15, only 2 shots, and then 16+ you can give me a dare twice as bad. With a punishment.”
“You’re so on.” You say taking your tequila shot and hopping off your stool.
“You timer starts…Now!” Ethan says starting your two minute timer.
As you walk away you pull your shirt down exposing a little more cleavage in hopes that would raise your chances as you make your way around the bar.
Exhausted and out of breath, 2 minutes later you make your way back to the table.
“Damn it.” Is all you say with a sigh as you sit down.
“How many did you get? 3?” Ethan asks with a smirk not confident in your abilities at all.
Exhaling deeply you roll your eyes and pull out the napkin you had every number on.
“Not quite…” You say looking disappointedly down at your results.
“Only…23 numbers.” You say looking up at Ethan’s dropped jaw. As the rest of the table hypes you up, you bask in the success.
“Now what did you say, I get to double the punishment?” You ask in a smart ass tone.
“Yep.”
“Hm, okay! Truth or dare Ethan? Choose wisely.” You say with a wink earning an eye roll.
“Truth.” He says sighing obviously still butt hurt.
“Is someone a chicken?” You ask pointedly making everyone else laugh.
“Nope. Just have fun coming up with someone that’s worth double the punishment for a truth.” He says taking a sip of his drink making you huff. If he wants to play it that way, then so be it.
“Have you ever filmed a sex tape?” You ask with the words rolling off your tongue. Ethan’s face turns bright red as the people at your table feel the awkward tension between you two.
“Remember, be truthful or you can choose to not answer for 4 shots.” You add while taking a sip of your own drink.
“No answer.” Is all Ethan says as he starts taking his shots as everyone else as the table dies from laughter.
After a few minutes of silence and miscellaneous conversations the table settles down. Making you forget about the game completely.
“Okay, okay, Y/N, truth or dare.” Natalie asks you to which you respond with an eye roll.
“Shouldn’t it be someone else’s turn?”
“Nah, you’re good at this game. You make it entertaining, pick one.” Natalie says making you chuckle.
“Truth. I don’t want to get up again.” You say giving her a pleading look.
“Describe your perfect dream partner. From head to toe, first thing that comes to your mind.”
“Do you want me to paint your nails next too? What is this a 12 year olds birthday party?” You ask laughing making her lightly hit your shoulder.
“I don’t even know where to start.” You whine making her give you a look of disbelief. You stare at your fingers that your fidgeting with as you start to think of your dream type.
“Okay, uh, Brown hair. Brunettes are alway cute.” You trail off not really knowing what to say next.
“Go on…” Natalie urges you making you rub your forehead from stress.
“I like green or blue eyes, wait just blue eyes. I like the deep ocean-y blue ones, not really icy. A stubble is always cute, or a little bit of facial hair. Oh and he needs to be tall, or taller than me at least.”
“Okay… give us some personality.” Will says with you rolling your eyes in response.
“God you people are needy!” You say faking annoyance. The alcohol has really helped in you not really caring with these things. “Confident but not cocky. Funny, able to take a joke and match energy. Communicates. Empathetic, and passionate. Pretty smile. Oh and respects me and my body or boundaries. ”
“Oh those are good,” Maggie adds making you blush a little.
“Hm. Give us some ideal careers.” Will adds making you think. Also a little suspicious. Why is he so interested.
“Surgeon.” You say without thinking.
“I need to be with someone who understands our job and is able to work with me on not having the most accommodative schedule. Or an NHL player so I can become his trophy wife.” You say with a smile toasting your beer with Natalie who mutters a ‘true that’.”
Before anyone really responds you a hear a soft chuckle from across the table. Will.
“What’s so funny?” You ask slightly glaring at him.
“You know, I was putting the puzzle pieces together, and you know who sounds like your Dream Partner Y/N?” He asks making you confused.
“Humor me, Will.” You say because you weren’t specifically thinking about anyone while describing your ideal type. It’s just your type that’s all.
“Mr. Connor Rhodes over here.” He says with a smirk making your face drop at the realization.
“Hm. Yeah, actually that makes a lot of sense.” Natalie says after thinking it over.
“Yeah the brown hair, stubble, blue ocean eyes, not the icy ones!” Ethan adds making you kick his shin under the table.
You can’t see Connor’s reaction to all of this but you know it’s probably not good. You wipe your hands down your face before you decide to get up, “I’m gonna go get another drink.” You say announcing your departure as you walk away.
Fuck what were you thinking. You and Connor? Dating? More than friends? Of course it crossed your mind, but for it to be a reality? Hell no. You can’t even imagine how much he doesn’t like you. He’s always second-guessing your choices as a doctor, and you’re never on the same page with anything.
It seems like he always has a problem with you, so now that you basically told him to his face he’s your dream type. That’s embarrassing.
Resting your head on the bar counter in front of you, you try your hardest not to cry from embarrassment right here right now.
Feeling a soft hand on your shoulder, you keep your face buried in your arms not willing to face Natalie or Will right now.
“Go away, Will.” You mutter but instead of the person walking away, you feel their presence shift to sit in the seat next to you.
“It’s not Will.” You hear Connor say making your face blush even more. Fuck why did he have to come over here. He’s probably going to give you the talk that, ‘As flattering as it is that you have a secret crush on me, I’m gonna have to say we’re better as friends.’ No way, you’re not putting yourself through that tonight.
“Oh. Well you can go away too.” You mutter again.
“Can we talk?” He asks in a softer tone making you basically become the whole emotion on embarrassment. God why tonight?
“I’d rather not.” You say still not lifting your head up.
“That’s fine. I can talk…just, listen?”
Finally lifting your head up and looking Connor in the eye you sigh.
“I-”
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to put you in this awkward position where you feel obligated to come reassure me and gently let me down, saying ‘you’re flattered but we’re better as friends.’ Because I know, not that we’re really friends and I’m pretty sure you hate me but that’s besides the point. I understand. Now I’m going to excuse myself saying I’ll go to the bathroom, when i’m probably just going to walk out the door. Have a good night Connor.”
“Y/N wait!” He says grabbing your elbow to stop you from walking away.
“No, it’s okay,”
“No. Let me talk.” He pleads looking you in the eye. This sends butterflies to your stomach and also makes you overly aware of him touching your arm right now. Oh my god, Connor Rhodes is touching your arm right now. You could faint.
Sighing you sit back down next to him. Turning your chair so your knees are facing each other and you guys are sideways to the bar counter you run your hand through your hair as a nervously.
“I’m sorry that Will put you in that position, I’m sure you didn’t mean anything by it and that was kind of a dick move on his part, I’m also sorry I gave you the idea I don’t like you. Because I do, a lot. Thats partially the reason Will was pushing you to share so much. I always thought you never liked me, and they’ve been trying to convince me to ask you out. So now I guess, that’s what i’m doing? Y/N, would you want to-”
“Wow, Connor um…” You say interrupting him quietly, shocked from his confession.
“And now this is the part you try to let me down gently?” He asks chuckling a little but obviously hurt.
“No! No, i’m just surprised is all. We’ve just never really agreed on anything as doctors and I was convinced that you always had something against me…I never really thought of the idea of us together. I guess I never really allowed myself too. I mean, like, I would love to go out with you don’t get me wrong…But if this is just out of pity because I ran off embarrassed, again I hope you don’t feel obligated to-” You say rambling but he cuts you off.
“Y/N, that’s not what I’m doing. I want to do this. I like you, a lot.”
Another blush creeps onto your face as you make eye contact with Connor. Your heart is in your throat, not really knowing what to say you smile shyly.
“So will you please, go out with me?” He asks furrowing his brow in anticipation of your answer.
“Yes,” You say smiling a little awkwardly because you don’t know where to go from here.
“And now is the part where one of you invites each other to their house, and then you guys make beautiful drunken love, allllll night!” Will says coming in between you guys, holding each of your shoulders.
“Will, if you don’t get out of my sight in the next 5 seconds I’m going to punch you in the mouth.” You say with your eyes not leaving Connor’s as he sits back in his seat and snickers.
As you and Connor both get up to leave, Connor grabs your hand to guide you out behind him.
“Wanna come back to my place?” Connor asks once you both are outside.
“I’d like that.” You say grabbing his other hand holding them between you guys.
Before you would even be able to prepare let alone register what was going to happen, Connor leaned down and placed his lips on yours.
It was a soft but needy kiss that you only broke because you needed air. Only pulling away far enough to rest his forehead against yours you both chuckle.
“I like you too, Connor.” You whisper as he places his lips back on yours and smiles in between the kisses.

Babysitting 101
Chicago Med
You and Connor babysit Owen so that Will and Natalie can still have their date night after the babysitter calls in sick.
Warnings: None
Requested = Yes
Y/L/N = Your Last Name
Tumblr media
"Nice job back there Dr. Y/L/N," Connor smiled at you.
The two of you had just finished a relatively easy surgery and had returned to the ED to help with the backlog of patients. Between the icy roads and flu season, they could use all the help they could get in there.
"You weren't too shabby either Dr. Rhodes," You shot back and Connor smirked.
"Quit flirting over there lovebirds," Maggie called out, "Y/N you're needed in Treatment 2. Connor, we have an incoming five minutes out, you're going to Baghdad."
"I'll see you after shift then?" Connor quirked an eyebrow and you nodded.
"You bet."
~~~
The rest of your day flew by without any sight of your boyfriend. You were so busy, constantly rushing from one room to next in an attempt to catch up with the schedule.
By the end of your shift, you were absolutely exhausted and wanted nothing more than to open a bottle of wine and put on your favourite movie while snuggling Connor on the couch.
It was that thought that managed to keep you on your feet.
"I am ready to call it a night," You breathed out while you gathered your items, "I don't know if my feet could stand a moment longer."
"Well, they're going to need to find some juice if you want to get to your car," Maggie joked.
You laughed, "Not if I can convince Connor to carry me there."
"I don't think you'd have any trouble," Maggie said and shook her head, "That man is whipped for you..."
You both chuckled at that but you both also knew it was true. Connor would fly to the moon for you.
"Well, have a good night Y/N," Maggie said and left, leaving you to wait for Connor alone.
You quietly waited on the couch for Connor to finish up his last surgery of the day. Nurses and doctors bustled in and out of the lounge and you wished each and every one of them a good night. You were mostly just on your phone, not actively engaging in any other conversation when you overheard your friend Natalie speaking.
"Sorry Will," She was saying, "The nanny just texted. She can't stay later tonight, something with her sister came up."
"Don't worry about it," Will responded, "I'll cancel the reservation then."
You spoke before you could really think things through, "I can watch Owen!"
When your sudden outburst was met with confused silence, you flushed and fumbled with your words.
"I wasn't eavesdropping, I just overheard," You mumbled quickly, "But seriously if you guys need someone to watch Owen, Connor and I can totally do it."
"Connor won't mind?" Natalie asked and you shook your head.
You and Connor hadn't really talked about kids but this wasn't anything like that. All you had to do was look after a toddler for a few hours. How hard could that be?
"We don't have anything better to do tonight anyway," You told them, "In fact, I think it'll be really fun!"
Natalie chuckled at your enthusiasm, "Well I can assure you that it won't be dull."
"Exactly," You pointed your finger at her, "You and Will go on your date. Do. Not. Cancel. Connor and I will watch Owen."
Will and Natalie took a moment to look at each other as if they were contemplating your offer. Finally, Natalie turned back to face you and nodded.
"Thank you Y/N," Natalie said genuinely, "I owe you one."
You shook your head though, "Nah...you don't owe me anything. I'm just glad I can help."
It was decided that Natalie and Will would go and get ready for their date and that they would drop off Owen when you and Connor were back at your apartment. You figured that you should give Connor a heads up but he was still in surgery and you weren't going to disturb him because he was suddenly on babysitting duty afterwards.
He'd get over it.
About ten minutes later, a tired-looking Connor walked into the doctor's lounge and the deepest part of your gut felt bad that you had dragged him into babysitting Owen after a long shift. That guilt caused you to just stare at your boyfriend for a solid minute before he pointed it out.
"What did you do," Connor demanded teasingly as he turned to face you.
You quickly snapped out of your trance, "Nothing!"
"Uh-huh..." Connor raised an eyebrow, "I know that look Y/N."
You feigned offence, "I don't know what you're talking about."
Connor only continued to stare at you and after a while, you finally caved.
"Okay fine," You sighed. "You have to promise that you won't get mad."
Connor nodded, "Okay..."
"I..." You squeezed your eyes shut before opening them again. "I kind of volunteered us to babysit Owen while Nat and Will go on a date."
Silence.
“So…” You stared at Connor, “Thoughts?”
Connor raised an eyebrow, “You voluntarily agreed to look after a toddler…after working a 12 hour shift…”
“Correct.”
The two of you stood there, staring at each other, unmoving. After a hot second, Connor let out a slightly exasperated sigh and ran a hand through his hair.
“Alrighty then, I suppose we should get going then,” Connor gave you a small smile, “wouldn’t want to keep Nat and Will waiting now would we?”
~~~ Perhaps you had underestimated how exhausting looking after a toddler could be.
No, you definitely had.
Dinner had been tiring enough. Somehow more food had gotten on you and Connor than into Owen's stomach.
"You've got a little something there," Connor teased and wiped mashed potato off your eyebrows.
You laughed, "What? Are you sure it's not my new makeup?"
Game after game. Activity after activity. It just didn't end, and yet somehow, it was you and Connor that were tired out, not Owen.
"Y/N!" Owen's little voice gleefully called out. "Come play!"
You huffed but smiled big for the little boy before pushing yourself onto your feet.
Connor couldn't help but chuckle, "Are you having some regrets right about now?"
"Pfttt, never," You shook your head as you sat yourself down on the ground next to Owen. "Right buddy? We're having a blast?"
Connor smiled at you affectionately. He couldn't deny that he was tired but he also had zero regrets. You were so good with Owen. The way you spoke to him. The way you naturally were so attuned to his needs. The way you understood his toddler language.
It took about another hour before Owen's energy began to wane. After a ten minute chase around the apartment, you had managed to wrangle Owen into his pajamas and Connor convinced him to brush his teeth.
Another twenty minutes later and Owen was passed out in bed and you and Connor collapsed on the couch.
"I'm not sure which was more exhausting," Connor joked. "Our twelve hour shift or this."
You teased, "Did a toddler outdo you?"
"Absolutely," Connor shook his head. "I was absolutely outdone by a toddler."
Laughing, you leaned against Connor who wrapped his arm around your shoulders and pulled you closer to his chest.
"You're really good with him you know," Connor softly said.
You hummed, "You weren't so bad yourself."
"Maybe we should babysit more often," Connor added and you scoffed.
"I think we need a few weeks to recover before making any big decisions."

Title : the new doctor - connor rhodes x fem!reader
Warnings : past abuse, panic attacks, angst, mentions of death of a patient, mentions of nightmares/night terrors, past abusive relationship, badly written enemies to lovers. If there is anything I might’ve missed, please don't hesitate to let me know and I will add it to the warnings.
A/n : This fic is dark and heavy so please be cautious while reading. Please remember that if you have experienced something similar there is always help available and people you can talk to. Stay safe and if anything in the warnings triggers you please don’t read this. I’m really sorry to anyone who has experienced something like this. Help is always available, please don’t be afraid to reach out to someone.
Moving to Chicago was a quick decision you had made in the middle of the night. After your ex boyfriend decided to go to the bar again and get wasted and when you tried to ask him to stop drinking and get a job, he punched you so hard to the point of a split eyebrow and a black eye.
After patching up the split eyebrow and making sure you didn’t need any stitches, you opened your laptop and started looking for jobs in different cities. As far away from here as possible. You knew it wouldn't be a good idea to stay with him and to stay in this relationship.
So after many years of enduring his abuse you had had enough, you tried to leave so many times, but somehow your now ex-boyfriend managed to gaslight you into staying by promising he would change. But he never did change. Luckily you managed to save up some money just in case you’d need it, since you had a gut feeling that you would need it.
Seeing a job offer in the Gaffney Medical Center in Chicago, you felt like this was your chance to leave, without even thinking twice you sent an email with your application. And in the meantime you decided to pack your things and stay at a hotel for some time. It was for the best.
A few days later you got a response to your application asking for you to come in person for an interview. Seeing that email and your laptop you grinned widely.
This was it! You could start a new life away from your ex and the small town you lived in. This was your chance to finally leave and get away.
Before you knew it, you were in the plane landing at Chicago’s airport. Stepping out of the plane into Chicago’s winter air, you smiled to yourself.
This was it, you could finally start a new life and live how you always wanted to live.
But luck wasn’t really on your side, it's what you quickly realised after getting the job at Gaffney Medical Center. The patients and nurses were very kind and helpful. The doctors too, except for one doctor, his name was doctor Connor Rhodes.
He was cold and he always seemed to be angry at you for no reason. One of the nurses whose name was Maggie, explained that Connor recently got cheated on by his ex-girlfriend and from then on he has been acting rude and cold to everyone. But especially you- you didn’t know why he would act like that, since you only met him 3 weeks ago.
You tried your hardest to be friendly and nice to him, but that just seemed to anger him even more, he just started to be more and more unfair to you while brushing off all of your attempts of trying to be his friend.
Soon your migraine attacks came back from all the stress of work, the fear of your ex returning and Connor’s behaviour. Every time you had to be next to Connor, your whole body would tense up.
After escaping from your ex boyfriend, dealing with Connor would stress you out to the point of panic attacks and nightmares. Since he would sometimes remind you of your ex when he’d be so cruel and unfair to you. You had no idea what you could’ve done wrong to deserve this type of treatment.
You tried your hardest to be nice to him, but after a while you just gave up completely. You just didn’t see the point in trying to be nice to someone who would just brush off all of your attempts and just continue to act like that.
One day it all just came crashing down after a patient coded and you tried your hardest to revive him but it was no use. Connor was in the room with you, trying to help. But after one of the nurses told you that it’s no use, you stopped and announced the time of death.
Taking off your gloves and walking into the breakroom to just calm down and breathe, Connor stormed after you and started yelling. When you tried to walk away, he grabbed your upper forearm and turned you to face him.
You could feel the panic starting to rise in your chest, Connor then started shouting at you while telling you how much of a dumb mistake you made and he was blaming you for what went wrong, even if it wasn’t your fault.
When he raised his hands above his head in anger and frustration, you instinctively raised your hands above your face and head in an effort to protect yourself, since you thought Connor was going to hurt you. You could feel your body tremble and the tears slowly pour down your cheeks in fear and pure terror.
Seeing your body tremble and the way your hands were shielding your face and head as if you were waiting for an incoming hit, Connor’s face turned pale white. That’s when his heart broke into tiny pieces, it’s when he realised why you were always so tense around him. Someone had hurt and traumatised you to the point of this being your reaction whenever someone raised their voice or made any sudden movements next to your face or head.
“Please don’t hurt me” You managed to choke out through your tears, feeling the panic grow in your chest even more than before. The amount of terror and fear in your voice made Connor’s heart break even more.
Connor quickly took a small step back while slowly putting his hands down to not spook you even more by keeping them in the air. It was obvious you were having flashbacks and that his actions had sent you into a massive panic attack.
“Hey hey Y/n, I’m not going to hurt you. I promise. You're safe here, it’s okay.” Connor says softly while trying to get you to calm down. But it didn’t do much since you just kept on begging him not to hurt you- in your mind you were still in the small town you lived in with your ex.
After a while you just seemed to finally realise that you aren’t in that small town anymore. You were safe. You were in Chicago, which was far away from the small town you used to live in. Slowly letting your hands down you let out a sob seeing Connor. He slowly walked up to you and gently embraced you, letting you sob onto his chest.
“I’m so sorry Y/n. I’m so so sorry- I should’ve- I should’ve known…I'm so sorry.” Connor just repeated over and over again while holding you tightly.
Soon you managed to calm down, yet you still kept your face buried into Connor’s chest. You tried to take a few deep breaths to calm down. Seeing you in such a state Connor felt heartbroken, he shouldn't have let his emotions and frustrations out on you. You didn’t deserve that.
After talking to Maggie it was agreed that you could go home, since you weren't in the right headspace to be able to work properly. Connor offered to drive you home, but you refused while mumbling the excuse that you needed some fresh air.
Grabbing your things from your locker quickly you walked out of the Medical Center. You didn’t notice it but Connor kept on glancing at you while you walked away. He looked heartbroken, sad and guilty.
When Connor’s shift ended all he could think about was you. He felt guilty for acting in a way that made you relive those traumatic memories. Even if he didn’t know what might’ve happened to you in the past, he knew one thing- you did not deserve what happened to you.
He just couldn’t take it anymore, Connor knew he had to apologise to you and somehow make it up to you for acting like such a jerk to you. A few days later when you came into work Connor was waiting for you by the front desk. He looked sad and apologetic. He did apologise and he tried his hardest to start making it up to you for his past behaviour.
Over the next few weeks Connor was different. He was nicer and more caring, it’s as if someone had flipped a switch inside of him. Soon you trusted him enough to tell him about your past and why you moved to Chicago. And after telling him all of that, he hugged you tightly to comfort you.
He soon started coming over to your apartment from time to time to just check in on you and see how you were doing. When one day when you didn’t show up to work Connor decided to check up on you, since you weren’t the type of person who would just not come into work without saying anything before.
Driving to your apartment he felt nervous and anxious, he tried calling and texting but when you didn’t reply he wanted to come and check up on you. Just to make sure that everything was okay.
After you didn’t answer the door or any of his calls or texts. Connor got very worried for you. What if something bad happened and you needed help? Without thinking twice he looked under your doormat for the extra key that you had told him about after he came over for the first time.
Quietly unlocking the door he walked inside and started calling out your name. Connor walked around your small apartment searching for you. After a while he decided to check your bedroom. Slowly walking towards the bedroom he knocked on the door.
Hearing him knock on the door to your bedroom, you sat up slightly confused. But as soon as you sat up you grabbed your head from the pain. You were having one of those bad migraines that would happen to you from time to time due to the stress.
“Connor? Is it you?” You mumbled half asleep while trying to not cry from the pain. “Yes it's me Y/n, can I come in? I just wanted to check up on you.” Connor replied while standing in front of the door leading to your bedroom.
You just managed to mumble a soft “yes” before laying back down still holding your head in your hands, trying to ease the migraine a little. Connor slowly walked inside and seeing how dark your room is and how the blind were shut he knew what this meant. You were having a migraine- after getting to know you better Connor found out that you sometimes get bad migraine attacks.
“Hey sweetheart, how are you feeling?” Connor said quietly while walking up to your bed and crouching down by your side.
“Like crap and my head hurts.” You whispered back while finally looking over at him. You were pale and had dark bags under your eyes and you looked ill.
“Migraine?” Connor just asked while reaching over slowly to push the hair out of your forehead. He was trying his best to be gentle and calm around you after hearing what happened with you ex, Connor didn’t want to send you into another panic attack or worse because of his actions. You just nodded in response to his question, since you barely had the energy to speak.
“Do you want me to get you some medicine for the pain?” He asked while looking over at you with a concerned expression on his face.
“Yes please.” You said softly while glancing up at him.
“Okay I'll be back in a minute. I'll also make you some tea.” Connor said, smiling softly and he kissed your forehead before getting up and quietly heading towards the bathroom where you kept your medicine.
After you took the medicine, your migraine seemed to ease a little. Connor stayed by your side the whole time refusing to leave you in such a vulnerable state. Smiling at him softly you said “You know that you don't have to do this right?”
He just responded saying “I know. But I want to. It's the least I can do.” With a small smile while brushing the hair out of your forehead again.
“Thank you.” You whispered while smiling at him tiredly. Connor just nodded in response. “Try and get some sleep okay? I'll stay here if you want me too.” He replied with a smile. “I’m not about to leave you here.”
Nodding you closed your eyes and tried to sleep. “Thank you Connor.” Was the last thing you could say before you fell into a deep sleep. And for the first time in ages you didn't have a nightmare and you slept well knowing that Connor was by your side.

CONNOR RHODES MASTERLIST
Tumblr media
“Hey, Y/N.” You smiled at Maggie as you walked in and she spotted you immediately, pausing as she glanced at you. “You okay?”
You smiled back and nodded. “It must be the weather or something.”
Maggie nodded, even though her eyes watched you for a while longer. “Connor’s not down from surgery yet. You can wait for him in the lounge. I’ll call up to see if I can get an estimate.”
You smiled, nodding. “It’s fine, Maggie. Thanks!” Maggie took you to the lounge, putting a cup of water on the table for you. You thanked her as she headed back out and you put your head on the table, not sure why you were feeling off today.
Barely a minute had passed when a wave of nausea hit you and you closed your eyes, willing it away or pressing it down. Whatever it was.
You glanced down at the insulin pump you carried around and held back a sigh, afraid that you would end up emptying your stomach contents in the middle of the doctor’s lounge.
But it didn’t seem to want to die down and after sitting there for a while, you figured you’d better get help.
You got to your feet shakily, and you could feel your heart ramming itself against your ribcage like you’d just run a full marathon. Something was definitely wrong.
Tumblr media
Connor tapped his foot impatiently as he watched the numbers on the elevator go down.
The surgery had dragged on for longer than expected since there was an unexpected complication. He’d managed to get the patient’s condition back under control and ended the surgery successfully, except that he was late.
He knew that you wouldn’t get mad or impatient but he didn’t like to keep you waiting. Especially since you should eat on time so you could take your medication. Besides, he’d missed you when he left early that morning so part of this impatience was that he was looking forward to seeing you.
The lift door opened, Connor spotting you almost immediately as he stepped into the ED. You were standing at the nurses' station just outside the doctor's lounge, but Connor paused.
Something was wrong.
You looked like you were propping yourself up against the nurses’ station and Connor frowned, taking another step towards you, your name hanging almost off his tongue before he saw you crumple towards the ground.
“Y/N!”
As Connor headed towards you, Maggie and Will were already getting you onto a stretcher and into a treatment room, with only a silent reassuring nod at Connor.
Connor could feel the thoughts racing a mile a minute in his head, running through all the possibilities of why you’d have collapsed. You’d both been really careful about managing your diabetes but even so, nothing had been this serious.
It felt like the minutes were crawling by as he waited outside, before Will finally opened the door.
“She’s awake.”
The two words made Connor feel like he could finally breathe again.
“Do we know what happened?” Connor asked, half afraid Will would say something more serious.
Will glanced up from the iPad in his hands. “Listen, it looks like her pump gave out on her. I’ve put in the tests to confirm but…”
Connor frowned. “We’re careful about that.”
Will shook his head. “This is not on either of you, alright? For whatever reason, I think the alarm failed to go off.” He paused, studying Connor’s face. “We’re giving her fluids right now, and if the test confirms what we think then she’ll get electrolytes and insulin as well. I’ll order a new pump for her too. Why don’t you go in and be with her, alright? I'll take care of everything else.”
Connor nodded. “Thanks, Will.”
Will smiled and just patted Connor reassuringly on the shoulder.
Tumblr media
The tests had indeed confirmed Will’s suspicions but with the insulin, electrolytes and fluids in your system, you were feeling much better.
Connor had been pretty quiet and you glanced up at him, from where you were sitting up in bed.
He looked up almost immediately, like he’d felt your eyes on him. Giving you a small smile, Connor got up, scooting to the side of your bed.
“You okay?” He asked quietly, the way he did when you were feeling under the weather.
You reached out for his hand. “Sorry.”
He frowned. “For what?”
You exhaled. “Just…”
Connor put a gentle finger to your lips, effectively stopping you from saying anything more and shook your head. “This isn’t your fault. And Will reminded me it isn’t mine, either.”
You blinked back up at him.
“Look, for better or for worse. In sickness, or in health.” Connor paused, even as you felt the tears well up in your eyes. “That’s what I promised. And I intend to live up to those vows, Y/N.”
Connor put one arm around your shoulders, the other reaching for your hand. “And for the record, in sickness doesn’t mean for worse. I mean, I think we do great.”
“You do great.” You whispered, Connor smiling and reaching up to catch the tear that had streaked down the side of your face.
“We.” Connor corrected.
You smiled. “How did I ever luck into you?” You asked quietly.
Connor smiled. “Goes both ways, baby. Both ways.”
You lay your head against Connor’s shoulders, knowing that no matter what he would always be your rock.

You knew something was wrong the minute you got into the car and Connor hadn’t immediately kissed your cheek then asked you how your shift was. You could tell simply by the way he stayed silent the whole ride home, his hands gripping the steering wheel with such force that his knuckles had turned white and you were surprised they hadn’t broken through his skin.
It was unlike him to not ask you a hundred questions revolving around your day at work, and even more unlike him not to kiss you, so if you hadn’t been suspicious enough, then his stiff posture and lack of eye contact with you would have been evidence enough. And when he didn’t place his hand on your thigh each time you stopped at a red light, you knew you were in trouble, only you had no idea why.
You didn’t know what was bothering him, what you could have done to make him this way, and in all honesty you were scared to ask which is why you stayed as quiet as he did during the ride home. But the second you stepped foot into your shared apartment, where you’d just about managed to find the courage to ask him what was wrong, Connor beat you to it and he wasn’t at all subtle in hiding his obvious annoyance over what he’d seen when he came to pick you up.
“So, what’s going on between you and Casey recently? You guys seem to have gotten close all of a sudden.” Connor asked, his tone a little bitter as he crossed his arms over his chest, leaning back against the couch as you tilted your head a little, ignoring the anger that built inside him when you laughed softly.
“Me and Casey?” You shook your head, glancing briefly around the room before your eyes landed back on him. “Connor, I’ve told you this before, he’s my Lieutenant, that’s it. Nothing more” You added, scoffing a little at the insinuation he was so clearly making as you made your way to the bedroom, deciding you’d heard enough of what he had to say.
You’d had this conversation with him once before when he caught Casey hugging you in the hospital after a rough call and that hadn’t gone well so he could forgive you for not wanting to go down that road again.
“Oh really? Well it seems to me like he thinks differently… Especially if the way he looked at you when I picked you up said anything on the matter.” Connor said with a touch more anger as he followed you into the room, even the sight of the eighty-one shirt covering your torso enough to have his blood boil over the memory of how Casey had looked at you.
“How he looked at me?” You repeated, your tone matching his as you couldn’t believe he was making you go through this again. “Tell me Connor, how was he looking at me? Cause if it was anything less than with drool coming from his mouth then I don’t want to hear it.”
“He might as well have been drooling.” Connor scoffed, pulling his shirt over his head with such haste that he was surprised his head hadn’t come off with it. “The way he watched you… Practically fucking you with his eyes right in front of me.”
“For God sakes, Connor.” You muttered in frustration, pulling your own shirt off and tossing it in the hamper. All you wanted was a quiet morning after work, but it appeared as though your fiancée thought otherwise and little did you know… “How many times do I have to tell you? Casey does not want to fuck me. And even if he did…”
Unaware that Connor had been moving towards you, your words were cut off when you suddenly felt your chest hit hard against the wall, sending a tingle down your front which quickly made its way between your legs when you felt Connor push up against you, lifting your hands to pin them above your head, making you unable to see how he stared at you the very same way he’d accused Casey of.
“What? Would you let him fuck you?” He whispered, his voice so deep he was practically growling as he attached his lips to your neck, the pure heat coursing through your veins making you unable to reply.
You could feel his free hand snake around your waist, his fingertips trailing down your stomach before they delved beneath your trousers, ghosting over your already throbbing pussy and causing a soft moan to escape your lips as you leaned back against him, his hardened bulge pressing firmly against your ass.
“Would you let him pin you down in his office and fuck that tight little pussy of yours?” Connor whispered into your ear, his teeth digging gently into your lobe as he tugged on it, hearing the muttered swear words that left your lips in response. “Answer me baby… If he wanted to… Would you let your Lieutenant fuck you?”
“No.” You gasped softly at the coldness of his fingers as they pushed aside your panties, trailing themselves painfully slowly across your soaking slit as Connor made sure not to touch your clit as he wanted to hear you beg for it. “No I wouldn’t.”
“And why’s that?” Connor asked in intrigue as he always thought you had a little school girl crush on Casey before you met him. He pulled his hand from your panties and flipped you round, once again pinning your hands firmly above your head. The first thing he noticed about you was the lust that had blown wide in your pupils, your breathing heavy as you all but panted which only had him straining that much more against his pants.
“Because…” You breathed out, clenching your legs to try and feel some friction against the raving heat beneath them. “…you’re the only one I want to fuck me… The only one whose cock I want to feel inside me.”
“Hm, good answer.” Connor hummed in satisfaction, pressing his lips hard against you as you all but devoured each other. His hold on your hands faltered, allowing them to fall to your sides before you moved to unbuckled his belt, the only thing he allowed you to do before he took your hands in his, stilling your motions. “Not so fast… I think you deserve a little punishment beforehand, don’t you?”
“Punishment? For what?” You asked, almost finding yourself angry again as you thought you’d made it clear to him that you’d never dream of cheating on him with Casey. That was, until you saw the way he smirked, his eyes darkening as he imagined all the ways he could have you squirming beneath him and that’s when you knew you were done for.
“For being so goddamn hot that every guy who meets you wants to fuck you.” And with that, the words that had you smiling like crazy, Connor lifted you off your feet and threw you down onto the bed, towering over you as his hands roamed across your skin, feeling the hotness of it mix with that of his cold hands.
He gripped the cups of your bra, pulling it down to allow your breasts to spill over the edge, his mouth cupping one of them instantly whilst his hand went to the other, kneading it softly as he flicked and pinched at the hardened bud between his fingers, making you hum softly as your threaded your fingers through his hair.
You were already a soaking mess by the time he moved lower, his fingers hooking around the waistband of both your pants and your panties, which he pulled off you in one quick motion before he got to his knees, spreading you open to see the glistening sight that was your pussy.
“Look at you.” Connor teased, pacing soft kisses up your inner thigh, his stubble scratching you lightly as his arm slid across your stomach, holding you down to stop you from arching your back too high. “Absolutely dripping… And all for me.”
“Only you, baby.” You gasped, followed by a low moan as he slipped one finger inside you, which was enough for you to almost lose your train of thought. “Fuck… Only for you.”
“That’s what I like to hear.” Connor chuckled, in a way that told you that you were more than likely about to have to beg for your life. “Now be a good girl and moan for me while I fuck my fingers into your pretty little pussy.”
You did what you were told as he slid a second finger into you, knuckle deep before he pulled back, thrusting them into you once again and keeping a steady rhythm. The noises they made were not at all quiet as you knew how wet you were, how absolutely soaking you got when he took control like this, but then again, neither were you.
Your moans echoed off the walls, probably reaching the neighbours which you’d normally be embarrassed about but right now you didn’t care. You were simply in heaven as he continued to finger fuck you, curling them slightly to hit that sweet spot inside you. It had barely been a minute before you already found yourself clenching tightly around his fingers, about to come harder than you’d ever done before.
That was, until Connor pulled them out, making you whine at the loss of contact and look down at him, just in time to see him suck the glisten of you off his fingers.
“Oh, did you think I was gonna let you give in so quickly?” He asked, moaning softly at the taste of you on his fingers as he licked them once again. “Baby, I’m not gonna let you come no matter how much you want it.”
The second the words left his lips he’d attached them to your pussy, sucking gently on your clit before his tongue worked its way downwards. Eating you out like you were his first meal in days which had you whimpering as you all but levitated off the bed, gripping the sheets for dear life as you’d never felt anything quite like how his tongue felt inside you.
Five times Connor brought you to the edge of your climax, allowing you to see briefly over the edge before he pulled you away, his mouth leaving you as you let out a stifled sob. You couldn’t take another second let alone another minute of him denying you what you wanted. You were desperate. So fucking desperate for him to make you come that you could feel your eyes stinging with tears, your lower abdomen tightening more than ever before as it slowly reached the brink of being painful.
“Connor please.” Your breath hitched as you spoke, your body shaking from the edging he was so thoroughly enjoying. “Please… I can’t… I can’t take it anymore, please let me come.”
“You want to come baby?” Connor said softly, rubbing a slow circle against your swollen clit, making you whimper quietly to yourself as your hips bucked involuntarily. “You want me to make you come?”
“Yes… Yes, please make me come.” You begged, propping yourself up on your shaky elbows to look at him. “Please… I want you to make me come so fucking bad, baby. Want you to make me come so hard I scream your name.”
“Tell me you’re mine.” Connor said seriously, unbuttoning his pants as he readied himself to make good on his promise. “Tell me you’re mine and I’ll fuck you so good you’ll scream my name loud enough that the whole city hears it.”
“I’m yours.” You said instantly, biting down hard on your lip as he pushed down his pants, freeing his already leaking and thick cock from beneath them. “I’m all yours. My heart. My pussy… All of it belongs to you.”
“Good girl.” Connor cooed, tracing his tip down your slick folds, pushing it in just a little as he smeared your arousal down the length of it. “Now get on your hands and knees.”
You moved quicker than before, barely settling yourself down on your knees before you felt him come up behind you, his erection brushing against your inner thigh as he settled himself nicely behind you, the bed the perfect height to allow him to stand which you knew meant he wasn’t going to be gentle at all. And right now, right now you wanted it rough.
“Give it to me, baby… Let me feel that thick cock in my tight little pussy.” You murmured, knowing that you talking dirty always riled him up, which it did as the second the words left your lips he’d pushed into, bottoming out in one quick motion and he was anything but slow as he began to pound mercilessly into you.
Your back arched, your chin pushed deep into the mattress as you bit down onto it, stifling your cries as your body trembled in pure pleasure, the slight pain of Connor’s roughness and lack of allowing you to adjust to his size only adding to the heat that pumped through your veins.
“Fuck… Yes baby, give it to me. Fucking give it to me. Yes.” You cried out, pushing your ass out further before you felt a sharp sting across it, Connor having slapped it before digging his fingers deep into the flesh of it, sure to leave bruises come the next morning.
“Taking it so good, baby.” Connor groaned, his hips moving furiously as he continued to slam into you, the sound of how wet your pussy was like music to his ears, as were your moans which he’d never heard quite as pleasure driven before. He could feel you clamping down around him, about to burst any second now as he gave you exactly what you wanted. “That’s it, sweetheart, come for me.”
As though on command, you clamped down fully, pure ecstasy flowing fast throughout your veins as you came harder than ever before, making good on your word of screaming his name as you couldn’t help but allow it to cross your lips. You couldn’t begin to describe this moment, your head was fuzzy, your eyes were clouded over in white as you felt your very spirit leave your body, and for a second you thought you’d ascended into heaven, that was until your name slipping from Connor’s lips as he came inside you pulled you back to reality.
“Fuck, Connor…” You exhaled, no air left in your burning lungs as he’d fucked it all out of you. “I think… I think… God, I don’t even know what to think.” Your body fell flat against the bed, your thighs sticking together from a mixture of yourself and Connor, whose release was slowly dripping out of you.
Connor chuckled, flipping your now limp body over so you lay on your back, making it easy for him to see your flushed face as he towered over you, gently brushing his thumb across your lips before he spoke.
“You know what I think… I think… You did so well in letting everyone in Chicago know that you're mine… And mine only.”

When you moved to Chicago to join Firehouse 51 you made yourself promise that you wouldn't fall in love with anyone. No matter how handsome the men were. That was until you met Connor Rhodes, the handsome doctor with stunning blue eyes, black hair, and little scruff. He was every woman's dream including yours but you tried to not fall in love but each time you saw him and he saw you the both of you grew fonder of each other.
You, Sylvie, and Gabby had just finished transferring a patient to the bed when you had rattled off their condition. Connor Rhodes was standing off to the side he just looked at you amazed. That was the first time he had seen you and from then on he wanted to take you out, ask you to be his girlfriend, worship you, and just take care of you. As you and Sylvie were pushing the gurney back to the ambulance Connor pulled Gabby to the side "Who is she?" He asked with love in his voice and kept looking at where you had disappeared from his view.
"That is Y/N Severide. She's our new paramedic and a damn good one at that. She is also Kelly's sister." Gabby said and he nodded
"Is she dating anyone?" He asked she shook her head
"Not that I know of, she hasn't really opened up in the week she's been here." She answered him and he just nodded and she took that as her cue to leave and she did. She walked out smiling and you got her.
"What are you smiling at?" You asked her and she just kept smiling.
"Connor Rhodes just ask about you." Gabby said and you blushed you did take notice of him and thought he was nice-looking.
"Are you blushing?" Sylvie asked
"No." You said a little too quickly.
"Oh you like him don't you?" She asked and you stayed quiet as you got into the front seat of the ambulance.
"Shut up and drive." You said and she smirked but did just that. It was true you did like him but with him being a handsome young doctor you thought you weren't in his league. Why would he be asking about you?
Each time you took a patient in he was busy with another patient and each time he was free to ask you out you were gone. But what he didn't know was that you saw him but whenever he looked up you weren't looking at him. You both were growing feelings for each other. Even though you said no to dating after what happened in your last relationship, each time you saw him would slowly break down that wall.
He was devastated that he hadn't gotten a chance to talk to you. The only time you were able to talk to him was when you brought in a patient that he was assigned to and you gave him details, then when you were done and he had looked back up and you were gone and that was his missed chance.
You were thinking to yourself what he saw in you? Why would he want a paramedic when he could have a doctor? You weren't good enough for him or so you thought. What you didn't know was that he thought highly of you and thought you were perfect.
You were at the station sitting with your brother and the rest of your coworkers when Sylvie "So have you talked to Connor?" She asked and that got your brother's attention.
"What about Connor?" He asked curiously.
"Oh just that Connor has asked about your dear sister and seems to have taken an interest in her." She said and Kelly's face was unreadable. Before anyone could talk the bell rang for Ambulance 61 to go out and you were never so grateful for it.
It was a very difficult patient that you were called to a man who was unconscious from hitting his head on the counter. You had gotten him conscious while in the ambulance and he became hostile.
"I don't need to go the hospital." He said angrily and with a glare in his eye.
"Sir, you hit your head and you were unconscious it's the protocol that we take you to the hospital for further observation." You told him and apparently he didn't like that because had grabbed your wrist and pulled it to him in a strong grip. It was starting to hurt.
"I told you him not going to the hospital." He said and it felt like he was crushing your wrist.
"Sir, let go. You are hurting me." You said and that's when Sylvie took over trying to get him to let go of you after 10 minutes you were able to and you grabbed your wrist rubbing it. Sylvie got a restraint and restrained him to the bed. Though that left his other hand open. He then started swinging and you were in his path. His fist connected with the side of your face right at the temple and since he had rings on they grazed your eyebrow, causing a cut. It started to bleed and drip down your eye. Your face turned holding it.
"Y/N are you ok?" Sylvie asked
"Yea, I'm fine." You said as you turned back to her.
"Are you sure?" She asked noticing the blood. You didn't answer because Gabby announced that you were at Med. She parked and got out and opened the door and saw your face.
"Y/N/N are you ok?" She asked but you waved her off. You all worked to get him out and then Sylvie and you were wheeling him into the ED where Connor was. Maggie told you were to go looking at you in concern. You transferred him with help after restraining him.
"I told you bitch that I don't want to be here." He said getting aggregated again.
"Sir, I told you this already we have to take you here because you were unconscious when we got to you." You told him.
"She's right. It's protocol." Sylvie said and that just angered him. Connor must've heard the commotion.
"What is going on here?" Connor asked looking at you with blood running down her face and into your eye.
"I told this bitch. I told you I didn't want to be here." The patient said and lunged for you but didn't get to you because of being restrained. Connor turned to him.
"Sure they were doing their job and it was protocol. You were found unconscious. If you cooperate we can get you looked over and out of here as quickly as possible." Connor said in an authoritative voice and the patient huffed and rolled his eyes.
"Whatever. As long as that bitch doesn't treat me." He said practically snarling at you. You were silent you didn't do anything wrong to him. Maggie walked in. Everyone at Med and the Firehouse knew that you two loved each other.
"Connor, Will is going to take over here. Why don't you look at that cut on Y/N's head." Maggie said and he nodded you looked over to Sylvie and she motioned you to go on and that she got it from here. Connor motioned you to follow him and you did so.
You walked into a trauma bay and he had you sit down on the bed. "He did a number on you didn't he?" Connor asked and you nodded.
"Yea he had rings on." You said with a dry chuckle. He grabbed a pair of gloves and slipped them on. He walked over to you and gently touched your face where the cut was. You winced.
"Sorry. It doesn't look like it needs stitches. I'll clean it up and put a butterfly strip on it and you should be good to go." He said and you nodded. He didn't make a move he was too busy staring into your e/c eyes and you were staring back into his blue ones. Connor was the first one to break eye contact. He discarded his gloves and put new ones on after getting the items needed. He started to gently clean your wound and wiped the blood away. It was silent but it was a comfortable silence. When he got done he applied the butterfly strip and then he looked down and noticed your wrist.
"Yea he grabbed me while we were in the ambulance." You said and he nodded. He picked it up and examined it.
"It doesn't feel like it's broken. If it starts hurting more then you need to have it x-rayed." Connor said and you nodded and he discarded his gloves.
"You got it Doc." You said with a smile. As you got up and were getting ready to leave he stopped you.
"Y/N I wanted as you something ever since I've met you. When I first saw you I thought and still think you're the most beautiful woman that has ever walked into my view. Each time I've wanted to talk to you here, you were gone. I wasn't a believer in love at first sight I am now. I know I'm rambling and I know you have to get back to work and so do I, so I'll just ask this. Will you go out with me?" Connor asked and you were just smiling the entire time. You crashed your lips into his with passion and he returned it with just as much passion, his hands came up to your face. When air was needed you broke apart. "I take that as a yes." He said breathlessly and looking into your eyes.
"Yes, Connor I'll go out with you." You said and smiled "I feel the same way. I promised myself I wouldn't date when I moved to Chicago after my last relationship but I know you will be different." You finished and he smiled. You both exchanged phone numbers and then he reluctantly let you go. When you got back to the ambulance both Sylvie and Gabby had already packed up. You all got into the ambulance and started the drive back to the firehouse. They asked you what happened and you told them and they squealed, and you smiled. They started talking about what you should wear and where you should go for your first date. You sat there smiling.
You had a date with the Connor Rhodes and you couldn't be any happier.

Part 1 | Part 2
Tumblr media
“We’ll take care of you and your daughter.” You smiled at your patient reassuringly, noticing someone moving towards you in corner of your eye. Turning your head you saw a man with tousled hair standing at the threshold, his eyes almost hazy as his gaze skipped around the room.
“Where’s Leah?!”, he barked out, his eyes only focused on your patient. Your gaze flickered towards her, taking in the fear in her eyes and the gasp that left her lips. “Jake? How did you find us here?”, she whispered, oblivion dripping from her voice.
“Did you really think you could just leave and take our daughter with you? She’s my daughter too!” He took a threatening step closer, eyes narrowed. “Now, where is she?!”
Your patient’s breathing had quickened and a look at the heart monitor told you she was about to have a panic attack. “Sir, I need you to calm down and take a step back”, you said forcefully, drawing his attention on you. His eyes jumped to you, anger brimming in them.
“Like hell I will! I’m taking my wife and my kid home now!” Your eyes flickered towards the nurse, giving her a little nod to signal her to call the security service, before you met his again. “I can see you’re upset. But your wife and your daughter are sick. They need treatment and rest-”
“Shut up!” You flinched as he yelled at you, his loud voice alarming multiple people around you. “Everything okay in here?” Will appeared at the door, his eyes scanning the room until they landed at yours, staying there as he waited for an honest answer.
The man shook his head furiously, but he took a step back. You almost exhaled in relief. “I want to see my daughter! Now!”, he demanded, but before anyone could gave him an answer, he turned and ripped open the curtain to the next room.
You heard squeals, alarmed voices mixing with the sound of another curtain being ripped open. “Sir, I need you to leave now!” Will leaned forward to grab the man’s shoulder when suddenly he yanked out a gun, twisting around and pointing it right at Will’s chest.
A gasp escaped you as you watched Will stumble back, his hands raised. “Look man, we’re just trying to help, okay?” But the man, Jake, didn’t seem to hear any of it, his eyes filled with hatred and something that scared you even more; desperation and determination. A dangerous combination.
He wouldn’t leave until he got what he wanted.
“What’s going on here?” You heard Connor’s voice, saw him step out of a patient’s room and move towards the intruder. From his angle he couldn’t see the gun, couldn’t know the severity of the situation.
“Connor, no!” Your legs moved forward at the same time as the man turned around, the gun pointed at your brother. Everything seemed to happen so fast and in slow-motion at once as your body reacted purely on instinct, the fear for your brother carrying you forward.
You didn’t know if he meant to pull the trigger or if it was out of reflex, but you had no time to think about it as a shot rang out.
You would have screamed, but no sound left your mouth as the impact hit you, sending your body tumbling backwards until it hit the wall. Only moments before your feet had carried you forward, but now they suddenly couldn’t take your weight anymore, your body sinking to the ground.
Around you screams were erupting, but they sounded drowned out, as if you were underwater. Your name was being called, but it all seemed to blend into a haze.
You tried to peek at where you felt a sudden pressure in your body, shock mixing with confusion as you saw blood staining your clothes. Just seconds ago you had been standing in a patient’s room and now you were on the ground, your own blood pooling around your feet. It didn’t make sense.
From the periphery of your eye you saw people running. Some moved towards you, but most of them the opposite way. Away. They were running away.
And they were pushing, tripping, falling over each other. “Put down the gun!” You saw one of the security men approach, his own gun drawn at the attacker. Another shot cut through the atmosphere, but to your horror it was the security man that fell, blood splattering from a wound to his front.
“Everyone just back off!”
Jake’s sharp voice snapped you out of your shock and all at once reality hit you. Pain sank in, slowly at first and then in a stream of hot sensations. Tears formed in your eyes at the burning pain and you grit your teeth, trying to will it away, because you knew you needed to be aware of what happened next.
Lifting your head slightly you found the ER had mostly cleared out, only a few people remaining. Among them were Will and Connor, both of their bodies’ turned towards you in a way that suggested they had tried to get to you, their hands raised.
“Just let me get to my sister, okay? I’m a doctor and she needs help.” You stared at Connor, seeing the panic he tried to restrain as he appealed to the man reasonably. Jake’s eyes flickered towards you, hesitance written over his face.
“You didn’t want this to happen, do you?” Connor asked, his voice strained. “So let me make this better. Let me help.” He was pleading now and another wave of panic filled you as you realized he was only mere seconds away from doing something reckless.
For a moment you thought you were going to throw up from the sickness that cursed through your body, but you feared you wouldn’t even be able to move your body in the state you were in.
Jake let out a frustrated breath, gesturing towards you with his gun. “Okay. Okay!” Connor rushed over to you immediately, his concerned eyes meeting yours. “Are you okay? How do you feel? Can you tell me where you’ve been hit?”
You tried to follow his questions, your mind spinning. Instead of an answer you let out a groan as Connor found your wound, pressing down on it. “We need to stop the bleeding.”
Now that he was here by your side a weakness took over your body and you welcomed it. Welcomed the dark, because it felt easier to lean into it than fight it. But it never swallowed you. As much as you wished you could just pass out, the pain didn’t end, keeping you caged in your body.
You didn’t need to ask him how serious your condition was. The urgency in Connor’s movement alone was enough for you to confirm it was bad, the seeping hot pain a further indicator.
You saw Jake still waving his gun around, speaking in an animated tone with Will and Maggie. To your left someone had crouched down next to the security guard and you felt a flicker of relief when you saw it was Ethan.
A cough rose up your throat and your body shook, sending an ache through you. When you wiped your mouth you noticed your skin had turned red.
“No, no, no”, your brother whispered, his eyes frantic. “Connor”, you said, your voice a little hoarse. He paused for a moment, both of you locking eyes in a quiet exchange. “I’m scared”, you whispered, feeling a few tears escape your eyes.
Connor swallowed, his eyes filled with desperation. “I know”, he leaned closer, “But you will be okay. I will fix it, okay?.”
You nodded slowly, needing to cling to his words. To hold onto the reminder that you would be okay. That your life wasn’t over when you hadn’t even started fully living yet.
It didn’t make sense. You had woken up a few minutes before your alarm clock, had been in an oddly good mood as you had gotten ready for work and even your patients had been unusually patient and grateful. Today was a good day. Not a day that could turn into such a catastrophe in the blink of an eye.
This didn’t happen. Maybe in books or on tv. But not here, not to people like you.
“Hey!” Dr. Goodwin appeared in your vision, bending down to Connor and you. “What’s the status?” You hadn’t seen her before, but knowing she was here already gave you a sparkle of hope. As the hospital’s executive director it was her job to find solutions, even in the face of the worst possible events. She would get them out of here, somehow.
“She’s been shot in the abdomen. No exit wound so the bullet is still inside. I believe she’s bleeding internally.”
You saw a shadow cloud Dr. Goodwin’s as she looked at you and it was as if you could see the wheels in her head turning as she assessed the situation.
“What’s going on?”, you asked weakly, needing to know if the others were safe. “Mr. Whitman demands to take his wife and daughter and leave. I was on the phone with the Chicago police department. They told me he’s got a history of domestic abuse and violence. The wife filed a report on him and moved states to get him out of her life.”
“And he found her now.” You gulped, slowly piecing the pieces together. Dr. Goodwin nodded, graveness written over her face. “So what’s the plan?” It was Connor, his voice urgent.
Dr. Goodwin sighed, taking off her glasses and pinching the brick of her nose. You had never seen her like this, so defeated, and it filled you with unease.
“The police is here and a squad team too. But there is no way we can let them inside or get someone outside right now without Mr. Whitman noticing. Right now they are preparing for getting just one person in. Unarmed.”
“What help is that going to be?” Connor let out a scoff and it annoyed you how quick to judge he was, and more so, that you agreed with him. What would another person talking to Jake change?
“It would be a trained officer, who has the experience and skills to deal with these kind of high pressure situations. The plan would be for him to try and talk to Mr. Whitman first and if that’s not effective either, assess the situation and make a move or get back to the team and share valuable information with them.”
You could see Connor still shaking his head, but Dr. Goodwin stood again. “It’s the only thing Mr. Whitman has agreed to. You know I would prefer to get everyone else out, but he has been clear. If one person leaves, he is going to make use of his gun again.”
“And what are we supposed to do now? Just wait?”
“Connor”, you tried to calm him, but his eyes snapped to yours. “We need an OR now! Monique!” The blonde nurse standing next to Ethan looked over. You could see the fear written all over her face. “Can you take over for a moment?”
She gave a nod, her eyes flickering to Jake who didn’t let them out of sight. Crouching down next to you the two quickly exchanged their hands applying pressure onto your wound, the sensation making you let out a groan.
But you pushed away the pain, trying to focus on Connor. “What are you doing?”, you hissed as you watched him get up, wishing you could hold him back.
“Dr. Rhodes, we should wait for the officer to arrive. Right now the situation is stable and I can’t risk-” “Stable? Is that what you call this?” Connor pushed himself fully up now, the movement catching Jake’s eye.
“Sit back down!” But Connor lifted his hands, taking a cautious step forward. “My sister likely suffers from an internal bleeding. We need an OR to-” “No! Nobody goes anywhere!”
Connor’s face fell, his shoulders sinking, but he took another step forward. The grip the fear had around your heart tightened. “Please, I need to stop the bleeding. You don’t want her to die, right?”
Jake stared at you for a moment before his attention was back on your brother. “I just want my daughter and my wife!”
“And we get that. We do. But she-”, he turned halfway towards you, his eyes not leaving Jake for a second, “has nothing to do with this. Let me save her life.”
“I said no one goes anywhere! You save her here or you don’t save her at all. It’s on you!”
You watched Connor open his mouth again, but before he could say another word Jake stepped forward, his gun pointed directly at his chest.
“Do I look like someone who’s joking?!”, he yelled, making everyone around him flinch. Connor made himself a little smaller, taking a small step backwards while shaking his head. “Yeah, so you better listen to what I’m saying! No get your ass back down there!”
You didn’t have the heart to watch Connor when he returned to you, to see the defeat and hopeless on his face. The fear.
He had barely sat down again when another turmoil broke loose, gaining everyone’s attention. It had to be the officer Jake had allowed in, though you didn’t want to know what he would get in return for the favour.
Although you didn’t feel much hope regarding the plan, you trusted the police to make the right choice. This couldn’t be their first hostage situation, so they knew what to do, right?
What you hadn’t anticipated was that the officer coming in could be someone you knew. Someone you knew very well.
Jay.
No.
You blinked a few times, but it was unmistakably him.
His voice. His physique.
A touch at your hand drew your attention away from him for a moment and you noticed Monique had reached for it. Only now you saw you had balled your hand into a fist, all the tension left in your body visible in that one grip. Slowly she loosened it, taking your hand into hers instead and squeezing it in reassurance.
You didn’t know the young nurse so well- she was a little more on the reserved and quiet side- but the gesture filled you with deep gratitude, giving you the strength to look up again and face this new reality.
Jay hadn’t noticed you yet, his whole focus on calming Jake enough to make an uneventful entrance. When he seemed confident in the situation he scanned the room, assessing the conditions they were dealing with.
He did it with a professional calmness you wished you could have right now, his face only giving away his emotion when they fell on his brother. “Hey, man. You alright?”
He stepped forward, avoiding any rapid movements and Will nodded. “I’m okay. But Mrs. Kaden is in a bad condition. The stress on top of her physical state worries me.”
He said something else, but he had lowered his voice that it was impossible for you to understand anything. Jay nodded. “What about the two victims?”
“The security guard got hit at the shoulder. He’s stable.” “And the other one?” Will shook his head, his eyes filled with sadness. “She’s over there with Connor. It doesn’t look good, Jay.”
It was strange, listening to them and knowing they were talking about you. Waiting for the moment Jay’s eyes fell upon you.
You didn’t know what kind of reaction you were anticipating, but nothing could have prepared you for the utter shock that filled Jay’s face as he looked at you.
You watched him do a double take, every trace of his confidence and expressionlessness gone, replaced by a turmoil of emotions. He almost lunged forward, stopping himself when Jake’s warning voice filled the air.
You could see Connor’s questioning gaze on you, but you were focused fully on Jay as he made his way over to you with careful movements.
When he crouched down in front of you, he was close enough for you to see a hint of fear in his eyes. “What happened?”
Your petty argument, the distance, it all seemed forgotten as you stared at him, not strong enough to hide your own fear. “I got shot.”
Although it was obvious, it was the first time you had said the words out loud, had acknowledged the fact that this was really happening to you. It felt surreal, even with the burning pain spreading through your body, making it impossible to keep your composure.
Jay’s eyes softened as he heard your husky voice, the effort it took you to form the words another sign how bad your current shape was. For a moment his eyes drifted over your body, his face twisting in pain as he stared at your blood, before he looked up again.
“He said he’s going to kill us if he doesn’t walk out of here with his wife and his kid.” Jay nodded, his lips pressed into a thin line. “I know.”
“But- you’re here now…right?”
“Yeah, I am.” Jay tried to force an encouraging smile on his face, but you knew him well enough to know it was strained.
“You’re here”, you repeated relieved, your voice almost giving up at the end and you coughed. Jay stared at you, his eyes a little widened, his pupils dilated in fear.
He was scared. For you. He was scared for you.
“Her pulse is up to 120 and she’s sweating.” It was Monique and you saw her exchange a look with Connor. “What’s her condition?” Jay was talking to Connor now, as if he had only now realized he was there.
Under different circumstances your brother wouldn’t have let go what had just happened right in front of his eyes. He would have teased you until you would have told him the truth about Jay and you. But now he did, just like that, knowing there was no time for it as yours was running out.
The thought sent another wave of fear through your body, but with the hot pain and the growing weakness you felt too overwhelmed to do anything about it. So you tried to focus on the feeling of Monique’s hand holding yours, on Jay’s closeness and your brother’s words.
“The bullet likely caused internal bleeding. She’s losing too much blood.” Connor almost ran a hand over his face like he always did when he was stressed, stopping himself when he saw your blood on his hands.
“What do you need?”
“I need an OR. I need to find the bleeding and stop it.” His voice was a mix of desperation and determination and Jay listened intensely. His mask of professionalism was back in place, the sight having something grounding to it in the midst of this chaos, but you could detect a few flaws where his emotions threatened to pour in.
“I’m here to negotiate”, he began, eyes cast towards Jake, continuing lowly, “but really I think this will take a different ending.”
You wanted to ask him what that meant, but it seemed too difficult and you were forced to watch him get up instead. As Connor tried to get up too you tried to catch his wrist. You failed, but the movement still let him pause.
“Don’t go, please”, you whispered, your body shaking. You wished you could stop it, but you had lost all control over it, and when had it become so cold?
You felt Jay’s eyes on you as Connor leaned down to you, placing his hands on the sides of your face. “You’re sweating and your pulse is way up. Your skin is ice cold and you’re pale. I don’t need to tell you what that means. We need to do something now.”
You felt tears run down your cheeks as you tried to shake your head, silently pleading him to stay. He had already risked it with Jake once. What would he do when Connor tried it again and this time he wouldn’t give up?
“I’m coming back.” Connor stroked your cheek once before pressing a kiss against your forehead. Then he was gone, his touch only a faint memory as your head sank back against the wall.
As the two walked away from you they blurred into nothing more than silhouettes. Muffled voices filled your ears, but they were too drowned out for you to understand anything. Monique was speaking to you too, the level of her tone indicating she was saying something to soothe you, but her words never reached you either.
A part of you wanted to pass out. As much as you wanted to know what happened, with Connor and Jay not by your side any longer all your fight had left you. The pain felt unbearable now, as if someone had lit your body on fire and the flames were eating at you, slowly burning you alive.
Your throat was closing and it was getting hard to breathe. Every once in a while you choked on air, raspy coughs escaping your mouth. And it was so cold. Colder than the winter in Chicago.
The last sound you heard before the darkness finally swallowed you was a gunshot.
-
The first thing you felt when you woke was the heaviness of your body, as if an invisible weight had been placed upon you.
You could hear the steady beeping of a monitor, the sound having something reassuring to it. You listened to it for a while, too tired to pull yourself out of the haze yet.
But then the events of the day came crashing back to you, the image of Jay and Connor both leaving your side to get Jake to let them save you. The sound of a gun going off.
You blinked your eyes open, your vision only slowly clearing. But eventually it sharpened, revealing the inside of a hospital room.
You weren’t surprised at the sight, but you still paused when you took in the IV you were hooked upon. “Look who’s awake.”
Turning your head you found April at the door, a smile on her lips. But you could see it wasn’t as effortless as usual and you wondered where she had been when all of it had happened.
Had she gotten out, left to wonder about Ethan’s and everyone else’s wellbeing? Or had she been hiding in one of the other patient rooms?
“How are you feeling?” She stepped into the room, beginning her check-up on you. You let her do it, squinting when she shone a bright light in your eyes. “I’ve felt better before”, you answered truthfully, growing slightly more aware or the pressure in your abdomen.
At least it didn’t hurt yet. You didn’t want to think of the moment the pain meds would wear off.
“Where’s my brother?” April had finished her tests, squeezing your hand. “He’s still in the hospital. I told him to go home and get some rest, but he insisted on staying.”
April shook her head, clearly disapproving of your brother’s choices. “But I did get him to take a shower. He should be in the on-call rooms right now. Do you want me to go and get him?”
You thought about it for a moment. “No, let him sleep. It’s been a hell of a day for him too.”
April nodded, a small smile on her lips. “What about detective Halstead? Do you want me to send him home too?”
You stared at her in surprise. “He’s still here? Wait- how much time passed?”
“5 hours. And yes, he’s here. Actually, he just got himself a coffee. I might have forgotten to mention how disgusting the one from the vending machine is.”
“You’re evil.” You narrowed your eyes at her, chuckling. April shrugged. “Can’t have anyone know our secrets. So what is it with you and the other Halstead. Is he the one you’ve been texting this whole time?”
You hesitated, ready to deny her words, because you were used to keeping it a secret. But you weren’t sure that was possible after today, and honestly it all seemed so unimportant know that you had almost lost your life.
“We were. But things are kind of- complicated between us so I’m not sure where we’re standing.”
“Well”, April walked towards the door, a smile on her lips, “whatever it is it can’t be so serious. You should have seen the way he looked at you when you came out of surgery.”
Your chest tightened as a wave of emotions flooded you. “He really stayed for me?”
April grinned. “He might have claimed there to be paperwork at first. And then that he wanted to look after his brother. But Will went home hours ago and guess who spend the whole time of your surgery pacing the waiting room.”
April winked at you. “I’m going to search for Ethan now. I wanted to wait for you to wake up before leaving.”
Warmth filled you and you had to blink away the tears, touched by everyone’s concern for you. But the mention of Ethan’s name had also reminded you that you hadn’t been the only one hurt today.
“Is everyone okay? The security guard, did he make it?”
“Oh yeah, we’re all okay.” Before she could say another word someone else appeared in the doorway and April left, a knowing smile on her lips.
“Hey.” You didn’t think you had ever heard Jay speak so softly. It made you want to pull him close and snuggle up beside him, be safe in his arms and forget everything else.
“Hey”, you said, trying to sit up a little, but realizing it was a pointless mission.
You supressed a grin when you noticed the coffee cup in his hand, but Jay had followed your gaze, lifting it up. “That’s the worst coffee I’ve ever had”, he declared, “and we’ve only got a new machine at the precinct last year.”
You chuckled lightly. “We have the good one hidden in the break room. But don’t tell anyone I’ve told you that.”
Jay grinned. “Your secret’s safe with me.” Pulling a chair to your bedside and setting his cup on the nightstand he sat next to you, his eyes flickering over your face.
“I prefer when I am the one taking the bullet.”
He smiled, but it was a sad smile, the stress from the past hours visible on his face. “What can I say? You made it seem so effortless.”
But Jay didn’t seem amused, his eyes heavy. “When I heard about the hostage situation, I hoped you weren’t on shift. I called you, but you didn’t pick up.” He blew out a breath.
“And my brother didn’t either so-” He ran a hand over his face. “It’s why I needed to be the one going in. I needed to know if you were okay.”
“And they let you?” Although you knew they had, you were surprised Jay had been chosen. You didn’t doubt his capability as a cop, but just like you weren’t allowed to be on a personal case you had believed Jay’s involvement would have been a red flag as well.
“Not at first, no. But I was very convincing. And Voight’s not too strict about the rules anyway.”
You didn’t want to imagine the length Jay might have gone to, to get what he wanted. Especially with Voight, who didn’t appreciate anyone speaking up against him or acting out of line.
You stirred a little, your body beginning to ache. “What happened after I passed out?”
Jay’s brows drew together and you could see the graveness in his eyes. “He wouldn’t let you go.” His jaw hardened. “Like I said, negotiations didn’t work with him.”
“Does that mean…-”, you trailed of, your heart heavy. Jay gritted his teeth. “Our backup plan was for me to lead him somewhere the squat team could take the shot.”
“So he’s dead now?” You didn’t know what to feel when Jay nodded his head once. Certainly not regret, not after what he had done, but there was no relief either. Instead you just felt numb, like the turmoil of emotions you had experienced in the past hours had left you completely empty.
“And the mother and her kid?” “They are okay.” Jay seemed as relieved to deliver those news as you felt and for the first you truly allowed yourself to take a big exhale. “As okay as they can be under these circumstances.”
“How could he even walk in with a gun?” You shook your head in disbelief, wishing for answers you know you would never get. “The hospital’s head launched an investigation”, Jay told you and you imagined the stress Dr. Goodwin must be facing even now that it was over.
“That’s good I guess”, you muttered. “Yeah.” But Jay seemed somewhere else with his thoughts and for a moment you feared he would go back to being distanced towards you.
But to your surprise he leaned forward, his hand almost touching yours on the bed. “What happened?”
You scrunched up your nose in confusion. “To you. What happened to you? How did you get shot?”
You took a deep breath, knowing you would have to face that question again once Connor was up. He would be upset, but as much as you regretted your action, wished things had gone differently, you couldn’t say it had been a mistake. Not if you had prevented something worse, like a bullet hitting your brother.
“It all happened so fast.” You closed your eyes, trying to recall the moment. But your memories were hazy, the images blurry, only in fragments.
“I saw Connor coming out of a patient’s room and he- he couldn’t see the gun. Jake would have shot him. He- I- I had to do something.”
When you opened your eyes again you saw Jay’s green eyes staring intensely at you, his brows furrowed deeply.
A shadow covered his face, but it vanished before you could ask about it.
“So you’d rather get yourself killed?” It sounded a little accusing and your face fell, anger filling you. “Don’t you think I know that now? But you would have done the same for Will. I know you would have.”
Jay shifted. “That’s different”, he said, but you tilted your head at him. “I’m too tired for that conversation.”
Jay looked hurt and disappointed, but you didn’t regret your words. You couldn’t take his arguments now, not now when you were still coming to terms with the reality that you had almost lost your life.
“I didn’t know you were so selfless. I mean-”, Jay rubbed the back of his head, “I knew, because of your job and how you treat your patients, but taking a bullet for someone else? I didn’t know you were a hero.”
He was smiling now, trying to loosen the atmosphere, but this words had the opposite effect on you. “I’m not”, you said quietly. “I didn’t even mean to do that. My body just- reacted. That’s not bravery or selflessness.”
This time Jay touched your hand, the unexpected gesture drawing your attention back to him. “It’s always an instinct. It happens too quickly for anyone to make a conscious decision. It can be a reflex and still be brave. Because you didn’t hesitate.”
You hadn’t thought of it like that before and you started at him, your thoughts swirling in your brain as the desire to be close to him clouded your mind once more.
“Does it ever get easier?” You blinked, a little scared to be so vulnerable in front of him. “On tv they are fine after that. They are so cool about it. But what if I’m not fine? What if that was probably the worst thing that ever happened to me and I’m so scared?”
You bit your lip, forcing back the tears. But the truth was you weren’t ready to die yet. And coming so close to death had left its marks on you. You could feel it everywhere, as you gazed around the room, took in all the sensations you could feel, looked at Jay beside you. It was all so much.
“Hey.” Jay squeezed your hand. “That’s acting. It’s fake. You almost died. You’re not supposed to be fine right now.”
A tear escaped your eye and you wiped at it, trying not to be furious at yourself for losing your composure in front of Jay. “I don’t know how you do it. Getting shot at and still running towards danger and not away.”
Jay seemed sheepish out of a sudden, no hint of his usual confidence and wit. “It’s my job. Just like I could never do what you do.” You felt yourself smile a little, his recognition making you feel a little less small in the hospital bed. “And sometimes there are- things that happen on this job that you don’t just get over. We all have things we’re dealing with. Even I.”
Now you squeezed his hand, trying to show him you were there if he ever needed to talk to someone. Jay looked at you with gratitude in his eyes. He understood, even without words.
Silence settled in, but it didn’t feel uncomfortable. There came no pressure to come up with something to say, no need to say anything at all and you could see it was the same for Jay, his thoughts drifting.
“So Connor huh?”
You hadn’t expected the question, drawing your brows together. “What?”
Jay licked his lips, inhaling. “I saw you two together. And then today-”, he trailed off, gazing to the side as he collected himself.
“I don’t know what you saw-”, you began, but Jay raised a hand. “Don’t deny it. I’m not blind. It’s obvious how much you care for each other.”
You started at him, rendered speechless as you tried to imagine what he could have seen. But it didn’t matter, because Jay was- “You’re jealous!”
He twisted in his chair, pulling his hand away. “I’m not jealous”, he said, but you shook your head, grinning. “Yes, you are.”
Annoyance flashed over his face. “I just don’t like to be played with.” Your smile faded a little, but the relief you felt only grew as your slowly began to piece it all together.
“That’s why you acted so cold towards me out of a sudden. You saw me and Connor and you thought-” You almost let out a laugh, only suppressing it as you took in Jay’s unamused expression.
“Well detective Halstead, Connor is my brother.”
You watched with delight how his face turned into confusion, surprise and then hope. “He’s your brother”, he repeated in disbelief and you nodded. “I told you I came to Chicago, because I have family here.”
Jay let out a groan, the previous tension melting from his body as your words sank in. “But Will-”, he paused, clearly rethinking something his brother had said to him, “that bastard. When I saw you together I asked him about you and he warned me not to try anything, because of Connor. He never thought to mention once that he’s your brother.”
“You asked Will about me?”
Jay narrowed his eyes playfully. “That’s what you’re concerned about?”
You let out a laugh. “Not concerned, no. I just- you asked your brother about me.”
Jay raised his brow. “Why is that so hard to believe? I mean, you asked him about me too.”
Your face flushed. “I did not!”
“Yes, you did!” Jay chuckled, clearly enjoying your embarrassment. “Will told me about it. It’s why he got so suspicious so fast when I brought you up.”
“And then he mentioned Connor and you figured-” “he said that if I tried anything with you I would have to deal with Connor Rhodes. And it’s not like you two have the same last name.”
“Different moms”, you explained and he sighed. “I should have just talked to you, but I got so mad and then I heard you two talk and I just- reacted.”
“You should have”, you agreed, “but I should have been more open with you too.”
“So, let’s try again?”
His voice sounded so soft when he said it you felt yourself melt under the covers. “If you’re ready to deal with Connor Rhodes”, you pointed out playfully and Jay shrugged, his natural confidence back.
“After I helped save your life I’m pretty sure I’m well in with him. Which reminds me, you owe me three times now.”
You rolled your eyes, feeling the tiredness return to your body. Soon enough you would be drifting off again. “It’s twice, considering you cancelled our first date.”
Jay grinned. “Fair enough. But I’m taking you out once you’re out of here.”
You smiled. “I’m counting on it.”

Help is on the way
Tumblr media
Requested prompt: You’re gonna be fine. just stay awake for a little longer, help’s already on its way
Pairing: Will Halstead x reader
Genre: angst
Warnings: blood, injury, near death, gun violence
Word count: 1.2K
When one ran into burning buildings for a living there was always the expectation of the occasional injury or close call. You and Will had gone through a humble amount of said occurrences in your time together, that was how you had met. A concussion received from not making it far away from an explosion caused by a sudden flash over.
From the moment he’d shone a flashlight into your pupils you’d been smitten, a fact concussed you had been all too happy to admit. Since then you’d become more cautious, and had promised to always make it back home to him. That didn’t stop him from worrying, he always would but you had promised and you had yet to break it.
The universe it seemed had different plans, but against all expectations it is not on the job when you come close to breaking your promise. It had been your turn to pick Will up after work, having had an off shift and less likely to fall asleep behind the wheel. Your perpetual and stingy laziness had lead to the fuel light appearing on the dash during the drive, leading you to reluctantly pull into the mostly empty gas station.
The clock reads 1:38am and you force Will to stay in the car, to which he only weakly protests. You lean over to kiss him on the forehead, smiling as you promise to be super quick. Another promise to be broken.
Stifling a yawn you make your way into the luminescently lit building to pay, grumbling all the while about the ridiculous price. The bell above the door rings to signal your arrival as you walk with your gaze focused on the floor in annoyance to the counter. You only make it a few steps before an angry voice is demanding you stop. You open your mouth to fire back at whatever jackass had so rudely yelled at you when your tongue suddenly feels like sandpaper. Every other noise is drowned out and your hands slowly raise themselves instinctively as you find yourself staring down the barrel of a gun.
Negotiating with criminals, patients, psychos and more was actually something you were generally incredibly good at. Yet as you take in the dead clerk behind the counter and the thief’s bloodshot and crazed eyes you already know. You are not walking out of this building alive. Terror seizes your heart, but not for yourself, for the oblivious Will you had left in the car. You stay silent as tears build in your eyes and you find yourself praying to every possible deity that he doesn’t notice Will, won’t hurt him in his escape.
“I won’t tell anyone” you whisper feebly, hands beginning to shake as the man stalked closer aggressively. "Please I-"
"Shut up!" he yelled, waving the gun around manically and drawing a whimper from your throat. "Fuck" he shouts, hands clutching at his head as his eyes wildly trail around the empty store. You don't dare speak or move and the next seconds pass by like molasses. To your surprise he simply pushes past you, shoving you into the nearest shelf and sending you sprawling amongst bags of chips and chocolate.
Just as you think you've made it out unscathed your phone decided to betray you in the ultimate cliche. Scrambling to turn off your alarm you don't notice the thief turning from his escape. Seeing you reaching for your phone, presumably to call the cops, he pulled the trigger.
The noise registers well before the pain does, the crack echoing through the small space. Looking up in shock you manage to witness the back of the criminal's head as he takes off in a sprint. Shakily you attempt to get to your feet, to get to Will. It isn't until you reach for your phone, alarm still blaring that you notice the intense searing pain radiating near her right shoulder. Looking down you immediately see the dark red liquid spreading across across the material of your shirt.
You don't register the movement of your left hand either until you are pulling your fingertips away and see the sticky crimson coating them. Faintly you think you hear your name being called just as your legs give way and you meet the linoleum floor.
Tumblr media
Will had been about to head in to see what was taking you so long when what sounded alarmingly like a gunshot echoed through the empty lot. His hand freezes on the car door handle and he watches with detached horror as a figure in a hoodie sprinted away.
He throws the car door open so forcefully that it rebounds and slams into his person. Will doesn't feel it, doesn't even breathe until he bursts through the small station's door. A choked sob escapes his throat as he attempts to call your name, feet moving once more as he watches your body tilt towards the floor.
"No, no, no, no" he mumbles, hands pressing at the wound in an attempt to staunch the heavy blood flow. One slippery hand fumbles for his phone, the blood sliding over the screen and delaying his call for help. The other has wadded up his jacket, pushing it against your collarbone as he frantically yells at you to open your eyes. As he is barking down orders over the phone to dispatch his eyes never leave your form. From the wadded up jacket against you upper chest, that is soaking up the blood far too quickly and dripping down and contributing to the scarlet pool, to the terrifying pallor of your skin.
"Will" you mumble hoarsely, eyelids flickering in an attempt to stay open, "hurts."
"I know baby, I know, but you’re gonna be fine. Just stay awake for a little longer, help’s already on its way. Just a few more minutes, please." The only response he gets is a pained whimper that makes way for a sob of your own.
The minutes that pass until the ambulance arrives feel like hours, you fall in and out of consciousness several times during the eight minutes it takes. The sweat that had built up on his brow causing your baby hairs to stick to your face, an action that had him absentmindedly attempting to wipe them away and accidentally staining your face with your own blood. There is so much blood that Will feels as if he is drowning in it, the thick liquid is covering the floor, your neck and torso and has slowly but surely drenched his hands and clothes. He tries to keep a level head, knows you haven't lost enough blood to be written off, he knows your chances of survival are far higher than a large portion of the patients he sees with the same types of injury. This does nothing to alleviate his terror, nor does it stop the slew of worst-case scenarios that assault his mind.
He vaguely recognises the paramedics that arrive on scene, but from the moment he is forcefully pulled away from your form his mind devolves into a haze. He barely remembers the ride to the hospital, doesn't notice Maggie sidle up to him and pull him away, all he can see is your bloodstained form being wheeled away. Away from him, your fate completely out of his hands.

This is my first ask so I hope I did this right. I was wondering if you could do a Will Halstead x reader where the reader is new to the ed and then caught Will staring and he was embarrassed or something. I’m really sorry about this ask I know it’s super bad. Thank you
You Cheeky Flirt
Tumblr media
Entering the Ed building I was so nervous about getting thrown today since it was my first official day working here. Sitting my bag down underneath my desk I was a new nurse who came from Indiana being a simple country girl trying to make it in the big city. "Hey I haven't seen you around here before." A male voice spoke to me where I was met with soft eyes and auburn hair.
"Ah well I'm new here. So that’s why you ain't see me around here...Dr. Halstead." I shifted my gaze over his name tag.
He sat down the medical chart he had in his hands leaning on the countertop in front of him. "It's nice to meet you. I'm Will, what’s your name Nurse L/n?"
"Y/n, Y/n L/n." I extend my hand and we shook hands where he never moved his gaze from mine.
Will lowered his gaze from mine where I began to feel uneasy. He normally never had any problems talking to girls. But in this moment he was a blurting mess like he was back in high school. So he did the best thing he could think of. "Do you like burgers?"
"I guess so. Why do you ask?" I was curious to see where he went with this.
Will moved his gaze back up to mine. "Would you want to get one with me sometime?"
"Will...Actually that sounds great." I blushed, taken back by his offer to date. Will seemed releaved through by my answer and I can say that we ended up going on a few more dates and became official after the 5th one.
Comments really appreciated ❤️
- I am sorry that this is so short. I wish I could have wrote more for Will

Money, Money, Money
Characters: Connor Rhodes x Reader, Maggie, Will
Warnings: Canon-typical injuries, overbearing/toxic parents, lots of violence, pregnancy.
Summary: Having money doesn't entitle you to anything. Why don't your parents understand that?
A/N: Haven't written for Connor in a lonnnggg time so here I am. I have mixed feelings about this but enjoyyyy. Posting this today in commemoration of my twin cousins turning one.
*****
Today was just so jam-packed in the ED that it was ridiculous.
One minute, your treating a woman whose half conscious from a car accident and the next your being handed a John Doe who is better off dead than hooked to a bunch of expensive machines.
You were always on your feet, not even having a second to yourself to sit down on a chair at the nurses station. It also really didn't help that Med had been handed a fresh new bunch of students who were all around the place, not knowing what they were doing.
Ripping off your gloves you deeply exhaled, closing your eyes as you stood in the middle of the ED. Everything around you was still a mess but all you needed was two minutes to collect yourself before-
"Doctor Rhodes, Doctor Y/L/N, you're on!" Maggie shouted from across the emergency room, sending you her most apologetic smile while she shrugged, having no control over what happened which you knew and definitely didn't blame her for.
Hastily grabbing what felt like your millionth pair of latex gloves, you assisted the paramedics and Connor wheeling the stretcher into a treatment bay, transferring on his count.
Everything was as it usually was, working together to stabilise the patient who was only half alert. From a mile away, you could smell the stench of alcohol, letting everyone know of what led the man to his current situation. Rolling your eyes, you stepped away from the gurney, allowing a few nurses and orderlies wheel the now unconscious man for an mri.
Aggressively, you ripped of your gloves, chucking it into the bin, Connor following suit, chuckling at your sour face. The only good thing you had going for you right now was having a five minute lie in with your fiance early this morning. Five minutes wasn't long at all but it was all you and peanut needed to fuel you for the long 24-hour shift ahead of you.
Right, you still had another 18 hours left till you could go home. Just flipping perfect.
You felt like collapsing, your body exhausted but the sickly people of Chicago relied on you. With a quick departing kiss on the forehead, squeezing your hand several times, you watched with warmness in your chest as your very attractive man ran off in those very nice black scrubs.
*****
It was an honest to god miracle that everything slowed down. You finally got to sit down, even managing to have a quick snack before checking in on patients. There was also the regular conversation over your baby, all the doctors and nurses betting on the gender while your closest friends pretended they weren't up for potential godparents.
You decided to do a quick round, going around to see if your patients were up and moving, if not then you'd offer your service somewhere it was needed.
At some point during the day, you lost track of how many people came in meaning you forgot who had what and who they were. With a tablet in hand, you scrolled through the man's chart, humming to yourself as you familiarised yourself with both his medical history and his current state, remembering what happened when you saw his blood alcohol levels.
What you failed to notice, too busy reading, was the man who you now know was called Nick was slowly coming to. Not a peep came out of him, blinking as he looked around the room, you being the last thing he noticed.
It all happened so fast from what you could recollect. All of a sudden, he sat up, not even groaning in pain from the several injuries he sustained while drunk and high.
"Nick, I'm a doctor, your in a hospital. No one's going to hurt you." You tried assuring him, jumping back when he lurched forward, forcing himself to stand, his unstable legs holding all of his weight. "You hurt yourself okay? You mind getting back into the bed?"
Despite your gentle and understanding tone, your bedside manner being top notch, Nick didn't even consider listening to you. You could almost see the flaming red flash across his eyes but before you could do anything, he came towards you.
With such a fury, his hand gripped your neck tightly, pushing you against the medicine cupboard that only this room had. Repeatedly, he pushed you into the glass door which shattered upon impact.
Gasping, you tried kicking your feet out but unfortunately for you, your short stature was not helping you were held inches above the ground. Scratching at his hand, your nails digging into his skin, he wouldn't let go.
You were incoherent, not even managing to shout or scream from the extreme pressure against your throat. Inhaling through your nose, you screwed your eyes shut when you saw a blurry fist flying towards you.
Everything was happening so fast but all of a sudden, you could breathe, air entering your lungs like a tsunami but before you could recollect yourself, not even letting your brain register that you were dropped to the floor, you were once again picked up and smashed against the sliding glass doors.
The glass broke on impact, shattering into small shards almost like crystals. Your cries were broken, the punches rolling one after the other.
*****
After having a quick surgery consult, assuring a patient that this surgery would happen, Connor was content. It was finally his lunch and he wasn't needed anywhere which meant that he could see his beautiful fiancée. Hopefully, you could spare a few minutes and he could check up on you and his baby.
The ED was much more quiet, almost too quiet in comparison to the chaos it was drowning in over an hour ago. Whistling, he leaned his arms against the nurses desk, giving Maggie his most dashing smile that all the girls of Chicago swooned over.
"Your fiancée is in six, give her five minutes." She said without taking her eyes off her brick, knowing exactly what the surgeon wanted without him even having to ask.
Before Connor could thank the charge nurse, he was interrupted by the deafening sound of glass shattering, his head whipping around to the source of the sound.
It was when it flashed in his mind that the room with the now shattered door was treatment six that Connor ran towards the mess.
Will and Ethan also came running forward, the two of them pulling Nick away from you while Connor shielded you as best as he could from any further harm.
"Y/N? Honey, you with me?" Connor asked, taking note of your fluttering eyelids and your cracking groan. He held you in his arms, feeling around the back of your head, his fingers coated in your blood.
Lifting you onto a gurney without any help, you were wheeled into a separate treatment room, Connor not once leaving your side and no one tried to pry him away knowing that it would only further anger him.
"Connor?" You tried calling out, struggling to keep your eyes open. "The baby..."
"Is fine, wasn't hurt at all." Connor sighed in relief, handing back the ultrasound wand to a nurse once he was happy with the sight of your baby who was alive and kicking.
Will nodded at Connor, letting him know everything that he needed. Picking up the railing on the side of the gurney, Connor wasn't leaving your side, wheeling wheel you up for an mri.
"You're going to be just fine."
*****
Coming to was more painful than you wanted it to be but because of the growing life inside your womb, you could only take so much medication which you knew and understood but you couldn't help curse out whoever was up there watching everything.
"The baby?" Was the first thing that came out. Your voice was hoarse, your throat aching as it strained from each syllable.
"Is alive and kicking." Connor nodded with a tight-lipped smile, helping you drink some water. "The lack of oxygen only hurt you, not peanut."
"Good, that's good." You closed your eyes, nodding in relief that no harm came to your baby because you wouldn't be able to live with yourself if they were hurt.
"You scared me." Connor whispered, enveloping your hand in both of his, not bothered by how cold you felt. "Don't ever do that again."
"I can't make any promises." You replied with remorse, wanting nothing more than to promise him but medicine was unpredictable, especially when mixed with drugs and alcohol. "I'll try my best though."
"And that's all I ask for." Connor smiled, pressing several kisses on your knuckles.
"Uh, you've got a few visitors anxiously waiting for you outside, what do you want me to do with them?" Your fiance asked, chuckling as he remembered the gaggle of doctors waiting outside in anticipation. They were all pretending to work but found themselves staring at the treatment room you were in.
But before you could answer with a yes, wanting nothing more than to see your friends, you cut off by the loud shout coming from outside the room, at the entrance of the ED. Unfortunately for you, you knew exactly who that voice belonged to.
"Where is my daughter?!" The voice near screamed, oozing with so much urgency that it made you feel sick. It was all so fake that even a stranger could see it.
You could only hear just how much of a commotion was being created outside your room, you and Connor shared a knowing glance, both of your mirroring the others annoyance.
Maggie's desperate attempts of steering the newcomers away from your room was useless. The doors and curtains were pulled opened and you were met with the apologetic faces of your friends and the furious faces of your parents.
"Oh my God, what happened to your face?!" Your mother said in alarm, rushing to your bedside as fast as she could in heels, her slim fingers gripping your chin to inspect all the visible damage to your face.
"Ow! Ma, that hurts!" You winced, pushing her hands away from your face, not wanting her to touch you anymore. "I'm fine, thanks for asking."
Your mother huffed, her dull eyes looking over at Connor, rolling her eyes at him before looking back over at you. "Where's your supervisor? You getting hurt isn't enough for your boss to come check on you?"
Before anyone could retort back, more than prepared to defend your boss, you were all stopped by a new presence that wasn't there before standing in the door.
"I'm glad that you could make it Mr and Mrs Y/L/N. I was worried you wouldn't make it taking into account your busy schedules." Ms Goodwin said, the sass dripping off her words, her smile welcoming but also smug. "If you could come with me to my office and we could talk specifics if you'd like?"
"I'd be perfect to do it right here actually." Your mother said, puffing out her chest with confidence she always had surrounding her. "You'll find our lawyers at your doorstep tomorrow morning with a lawsuit."
"What?!" You exclaimed, sitting up straight, ignoring your bruised and battered body screaming for you to stop moving. Despite all the pain, you were ready to throttle your parents.
As gently as he could, Connor pushed you back down without further causing your any pain. Ignoring your rolling eyes and your pout, he was relentless and succeeded in his doings. After doing so, he stood and glared at your parents.
"You mind if we talk outside, just the four of us?" Connor asked but it wasn't so much a question than it was a demand. Without waiting for a reply, your fiance held the door open for your parents and Ms Goodwin, sending the couple a tight lipped smile when they passed him.
“You have no right to be here.” Connor got straight to the point, not wanting to mess around when it came to you. Your parents were spoiled and entitled, thinking they could do whatever they wanted to whoever just because they had more money.
You’d long distanced yourself from them, no longer wasting your time wanting their approval and constant validation for every little thing you did. After years, you were free of their shackles but they always found a way to crawl back in.
This was one way they planned to become part of your life again.
“You will walk out of here, you will get rid of the press that I’m sure is waiting outside and you’re never going to show your faces here again because if you do, I’m not going to be as cordial.” Connor warned your parents, towering over your mother even with the heels she wore.
Your mother tutted, slowly shaking her head in disappointment. She was fully aware of the audience they had, all consisting of your true family and you boss standing to the side but some Rhodes man wasn’t going to get in the way of her achieving her goal.
“You are in no position to tell me what I can and can’t do. That’s my daughter, I gave birth to her.” Your mother fought back, not afraid to get into Connors face.
“Mrs Y/L/N, step away from my doctor.” Ms Goodwin said with authority, gently pushing Connor back. “Your not welcome in my hospital if your going to treat my doctors which such disrespect.”
Your mother scoffed, shaking her head in disbelief about they way she was being treated with such hostility. Something was clearly wrong here with how people took orders and did what they pleased.
“Now if you please leave, it’d be greatly appreciated.” Miss Goodwin said with finality, a smug smile on her lips when she realised she was getting her way.
Huffing, your mother burned holes into Connor, openly glaring at him, not hiding that she hated him. Scanning the room, her glare remained strong as her eyes landed on each doctor and nurse.
Giving Connor one last look from over her shoulder, you mother stormed out the ED, your father trailing behind her like the lost puppy he practically was at this point.
Everyone could breath easier, the air feeling lighter and less contaminated the second your parents left the ED. It was the biggest relief.
“Doctor Rhodes, please get back to your fiancée.” Miss Goodwin turned to the surgeon, giving him a very simple order that he wouldn’t object to.
Connor silently thanked his boss, smiling at her before coming back into your treatment room where you still sat, patiently waiting for your fiancé to come back.
“Do I even want to know what happened?” You asked, a small smile resting in your lips as you urged Connor to come forward and give you a hug.
“You’ve got nothing to worry about baby. Everything’s been dealt with.”

Request: I would love to see something Like IT’s Career day at school and Jay and Will come to teach about their jobs along with others. And Halstead's sister gets bullied. During the break of moving in between careers someone comes and beats her up in like the bathroom and leaves her there and no one notices her being gone untill the end of the day. (I kinda want like Fire, Med, and Pd to find her)
sorry if it doesn’t make much sense you can choose how to end it and stuff
I also LOVE your fics I can’t wait to see more❤️
Authors Note; Y’all really love the angst huh, gotta deliver,, and hopefully you enjoy this little drabble. Also, part of me really wanted to title this, 'big sister hugs' because I think that Hailey would be the best big sister and also give the best big sister advice.
warnings: private girls school (yes that's a warning), bullying, getting jumped (i guess?), hospital and injuries,, Jay and Will not knowing girl bullying and being stubborn, a very poorly written plot
Tumblr media
High school was not always easy, but you were comfortable at your school with your friends. That was until there was a security issue and Jay’s information got leaked. Your apartment, school, Jay’s license plate, everything that could be used to track him ended up in the hands of the ‘bad guys’. Jay and Will had broken the news to you that they were pulling you from your current school, and moving to another school closer to Will’s. A private girls school, the ones with the fancy uniforms and stuck-up kids who thought the law didn’t apply to them because they had money. You hated it. You had begged Jay and Will to let you stay, but there was no changing their mind.
The first week was hell, you knew no one. Starting in the middle of the year meant that everyone knew you were the new girl. You were enrolled under your mother's maiden name, for extra safety. It was weird not hearing your name followed by ‘Halstead’. After the first week was gone, you decided to stick it out until the problem with Jay blew over, by then, you could probably convince them to let you go back to your other school. Three weeks passed by and intelligence solved Jay’s leak.
“So,” You began on Sunday family dinner, “Now that the whole leak in PD is over…”
Jay and Will shared a look from across the table.
You narrowed your eyes, “What?”
Will ran a hand down his face, “Listen…”
“You won't let me go back.”
“It’s a better school-”
“Better?” You spat, “How is it better? I hate it there!”
“It’ll get better,” Jay said, “You just need more time to adjust.”
“I don’t want to adjust-”
“We’re not pulling you out,” Jay said, “I know you're struggling right now, but you’ll make some friends and-”
“I can’t believe you.” You pulled away from the table, leaving your half-eaten dinner where it was and stomping off to your room. Jay stood to follow, ready to scold you for storming away and having such an attitude.
“Jay,” Hailey grabbed his arm, “Let her cool down.”
Tumblr media
Jay and Will didn’t budge on your school. You had gone from begging to bargaining with no success. Now you were giving them both the silent treatment. You knew it was immature and frankly ridiculous, but you were too mad to think clearly. Jay had already scolded you for not talking to him for the last week. You had ignored him.
Hailey was the only one you spoke too, because it wasn’t her fault that Jay was being stubborn. Even so, you didn’t tell her everything when she stopped by your room. Namely, the career day that was coming up. You knew telling her meant she would tell Jay. And Jay and Will had a terrible habit of embarrassing you at school. At your last school's career day, Will and Jay had come and talked for hours about their funniest stories. You knew if they came this time, your peers wouldn’t be as amused.
When career day did roll around, your dean stood in front of the school in the auditorium, introducing students and their parents. Your school was much smaller than your last one - something about smaller class sizes being better for learning - so the auditorium wasn’t fully packed.
Not everyone brought their parents, but the popular kids with parents who had good jobs came. Like the group of girls who hated you, who all brought at least one parent. Your dean invited students to the stage by class and then had the student introduce their parents. Your class was last, the biggest number of parents who had come. You were sat at the end of your class, mostly because you didn't have anyone to bring. Not that it bothered you.
“Next up, we have Olivia and her mom, Jen.”
Jen was a dentist, she spent 10 minutes explaining how her job worked and then opened for questions. There weren’t many, mostly a few questions from seniors about collages and other stuff.
Then it was Sophie, with her dad the Banker.
By the time the girls who hated you were called up, you were ready to fall asleep. No one here had an interesting job, most of the jobs were boring well playing jobs that you could never see yourself doing.
The main girl who didn’t like you was Madison. She wasn’t fond of how the teachers asked you for answers in class, not that you could do anything about that. Her friend group was made up of 5 or 6 girls who were seemingly lovely. All smiles and compliments around teachers but spread vicious rumors and lies when adults couldn’t hear. You had heard them speaking about you a few times, not that you cared. It wasn’t great to be the new girl with all the rumors, but you had banked on leaving the school before for long. Which, you knew now, wasn’t an option. So now you were stuck with the girls who all hated you for rumors or lies that you didn’t even know.
Madison brought her mum and dad with her, real estate agents who worked together selling multi-billion dollar houses. The whole time she had a smug look on her face. When she sat back down in her row, she turned in her seat, looking back at you.
“Didn’t bring anyone?” She asked.
You didn’t bother replying.
“Is it because your parents are coke addicts?” Her friend beside her pressed.
How that rumor even started you didn’t know, it was so absurd.
“Or is it because they’re dead?” Madison pressed.
You gave her a bored look, “I’ll take my family over your fraud family any day.”
Madison opened her mouth to bark something back, but was shushed by your teacher. She turned back to face the front, arms crossed over her chest. No doubt stewing in your words.
“We now have some guests to speak to you,” The Dean said through the microphone, “We reached out to some of our first responders and invited them to come speak to you too. Everyone please welcome Dr Asher and Dr Halstead from Gaffney Chicago Med.”
Will and Hannah walked to the stage, both in their Med scrubs with doctors coats on. Will was looking for you, you could tell from the way his eyes scanned the faces in the audience. You slumped in your chair, avoiding looking at him at all.
How did he find out? Did he and Jay find out somehow? Did your school contact them?
You really wanted to disappear now, your face was no doubt bright red by how much it was burning. You prayed silently that Will hadn’t told Jay, but you knew it was a useless prayer. If Will was here Jay would be too.
You got your answer when the dean explained that there were more guests outside on the fields. She ordered everyone to head that way, ushering students with promises of something ‘exciting’.
Outside, firehouse 51 had parked their rigs on the grass. 51 had their ladder extended, Mouch standing at the controls grinning like a champion. Not far from Mouch was Trudy, flanked by two patrol cars and their officers. Looking across the gathered first responders it didn’t take long to spot Jay and Intelligence. Their own cars were parked on the grass, the lights on. Everyone but Voight had their vests on, adding to the dramatic atmosphere already created.
Students huddled around, entranced by the cars and rigs which you had seen plenty of times. You tried to hide towards the back, but Kelly had spotted you and tried to usher you closer. You shrugged back at him, trying to make it look like you were stuck within the crowd.
“Firstly, we would like to thank Sergeant Trudy Platt and Sergeant Hank Voight, as well as Chief Wallace Boden for coming today. We are hugely appreciative to hear from you,” The dean spoke into a microphone, “Secondly, I want to ask students to be respectful, as these hard working men and women have taken time out of their busy days to come and speak to us. So we are going to listen and show respect. There will be time for questions and demonstrations at the end. Please Welcome Sergeant Trudy Platt.”
The crowd clapped as Trudy took the mic, but it wasn’t too enthusiastic. Trudy gave a similar speech to last year. Along the lines of what made district 21 special, intelligence and the hardworking patrol officers. She talked about fake calls and how breaking the law would wind you up in her cells etc. It was funny, a few quips earning laughs from teachers and parents. But you had heard it all before. You were dreading what the others would say. You didn’t want everyone knowing your brother was a cop, that would cause way too many issues.
So instead, you slipped away from the crowd, heading back towards the school building to hide in the bathroom.
You didn’t think anyone would notice, most people were paying attention to the speakers or interested in the rigs. You were wrong, of course, being followed almost immediately by Madison and a couple of her friends.
You got to the lockers before they announced themselves.
“What did you mean my parents were frauds, bitch?”
You turned around in fright, not even hearing them sneak up on you.
“I didn’t mean it,” You replied, “I’m sorry.”
You were, kind of. Mostly you were sorry that you had said it, because she genuinely seemed shocked. But this was Chicago, anyone with any money committed fraud, it was kind of the standard.
“I don’t care if you're sorry,” Madison snarled, she was taller than you so when she stepped closer you couldn’t help feeling intimidated. “What did you mean?”
“Madison-”
One of her friends pushed you hard against the lockers with a forearm over your collar, “Answer the question.”
You were by no means a confrontational person. Growing up, Jay always tried to teach you to talk out your issues, violence or fighting wasn’t a good solution. Will was the same, although both of them weren’t always the best at doing as they counseled.
“I just meant that,” You were panicking under the glare of all three girls, “You know, this is chicago and-”
“And what? Everyone is a criminal like your addict parents?” Madison got in your face again.
“My parents weren’t addicts,” You scoffed, now annoyed that she wouldn’t let that go.
“No?” The girl who was holding you back moved her arm further up your neck, pressing against your throat, “Then where are they?”
“If my parents were addicts, would you really think I'd be in a private school?” You pressed, “Use your brain for once, please.”
You should have known that would piss Madison off. She let out an annoyed scoff then pulled back her fist and punched your square in the nose. The force slammed your head back into the lockers, the sound echoing through the empty halls. The punch wasn’t hard enough to break your nose, but you would feel the blood start to drip down your lip. Madison shook her hand like she had taken more damage than you had.
“Want to say that again?” The third girl finally spoke up.
It was like they were all gaining confidence in the security of the three of them. When one of them said something the others would laugh and smirk.
“I don’t like bullies, you know,” Madison said.
God, the irony.
This time the punch came from the third girl, landing in your stomach. You didn't know her name, but she was on the volleyball team, so her punch was much stronger. Your body doubled over, arms crossing over your stomach as your lungs tried to fight your diaphragm for air. The arm holding you up was dropped, and your body fell to the ground as you tried to force yourself to take some deep breaths.
“This is what you deserve,” A girl said, before another blow landed on your ribs. The wind was knocked out of you again, causing you to cough and choke.
Madison crouched down to your level, “Bullies like you deserve to be put in their place.”
You didn’t have time to appreciate the irony this time, because she was kicking your head, hard.
Your body reacted on instinct, curling into itself to try to protect you from another blow that was sure to come.
“Hey!”
The three girls sprinted at the voice, running away from their actions.
“Hey, kid,” A hand on your shoulder made you flinch, when your vision cleared you realized it was just Kelly. He held his hands out to show you he meant no harm, then gently helped you sit up.
“You’re alright,” He said softly, steading you sitting against the lockers. You couldn’t even reply, focused solely on breathing through the pain in your head and side.
“I found her,” Kelly said into his radio, “North Hallway, bring a jump bag.”
Kelly gently touched the side of your face, tilting your head to look at the side you had been kicked.
“You still got that med kit in your bag?” He asked, knowing Kidd had taught you that in girls on fire.
“Yeah,” You said softly, your voice above a whisper.
Kelly ripped open your bag, rummaging through it until he found the small first aid kit. He was only after gauze, once he secured it, he ripped the package open and pressed the gauze to your head.
You winced, instinctively pulling away from him.
“I know,” He said, sitting down next to you so he could hold the gauze in place, “Sorry kid.
You both looked up as the sound of footsteps came running towards you. You might as well have been on fire, the entire house was rushing towards you. Jay and Intelligence were there too, Will and Asher running along beside everyone.
“This is overkill,” You said to no one in particular.
Kelly chuckled, shuffling so that Will could take his place next to you, “We’re all here for you, kid.”
Will replaced Kelly’s hand with his own, when Kelly pulled away you could see blood on his hand.
Jay croached on your other side, letting Will, Hannah and Brett take care of you.
“What happened?” He asked, looking over your bloody nose, head injury and the way you were holding your side.
You didn’t want to be known as a snitch, one glance behind your brother and you could see students being held back by teachers and 51. The school day was almost over, everyone would be gathering their things to leave. You hoped you weren’t in front of someone's locker who hated you, this would definitely make them hate you more.
You looked back at Jay, his eyes filled with worry, “What happened, squirt?”
“I, uh.. I fell.”
Will scoffed, “You fell?”
“Yeah, I’m clumsy,” You said.
“You fell and hit your nose and the side of your head?” Hannah asked, voice soft, “Are you sure that's the story you want to tell?”
Over her shoulder, Kelly was talking to Voight and Hailey. Hailey was pointing something out, a camera that was positioned above one of the classroom doors.
“Yeah,” You didn’t sound confident at all. But right now, you wanted to be anywhere but here.
Jay looked pissed, but he didn’t say anything. He got to his feet and stood out of the way as Hannah and Will helped you stand. They lead you over to the stair chair, despite your very vocal argument that you were fine.
Being wheeled through the crowd of students and their parents was the most embarrassing thing you had ever experienced. You passed by Madison at one point, who was leaning against her locker talking to her parents like nothing ever happened. You avoided looking her way, instead focusing on what Brett was saying about getting to the rig.
Outside the building things were less stressful and crowded. You managed to convince the four hovering adults that you could stand on your own to get into the back of the ambulance, even if you didn’t really think you needed one.
“I’m really fine,” You argued for probably the fifth time, “I think you're overreacting.”
Will sighed, running a hand down his face, “You are too stubborn for your own good,” He muttered.
Violet chuckled, “Just lay back, alright? You aren’t getting out of this, no matter how much you complain.”
She was right, but that didn’t stop you from pouting the whole way to Med.
At Med, Will hovered as Hannah stapled the laceration on your head. You weren’t too happy about the idea of being stabled back together, but Will had taken a photo of the laceration to prove you needed it.
“That’s so gross,” You said, pushing the phone away from you.
“That’s why you need staples,” Will explained, rolling his eyes.
Not long after Hannah had treated you and left you to rest, Jay, Hailey and Voight walked in.
“Are you doing alright?” Jay asked, hesitant to start another argument.
“I’m fine,” You repeated, “I don’t know why everyones making such a big deal.”
“You were attacked at-”
“I fell.” You interrupted.
“Y/N-”
“Jay.” You echoed in the same tone.
Jay's face flashed with irritation, he looked to Will for help.
“We know that’s not true,” Will said, giving you his best parental disappointed look.
“The whole thing was caught by the security cameras,” Hailey spoke softly, she was the only person in the room who knew what it was like to be a teenage girl in high school, “We just want to know what they said.”
You tried to come up with some kind of explanation that wouldn’t get anyone in trouble, but you came up short.
“It’s not that big of a deal,” You shrugged, avoiding eye contact with all of them.
Will leaned forward, he looked wary, “Listen, squirt, we want to help, but we can’t unless you tell us the truth.”
“That is the truth,” You argued back, crossing your arms definitely, “It’s not a big deal.”
“You’re in the hospital!” Jay gestured around, “What about this is ‘not a big deal’.”
You scowled, refusing to say anything else and just sitting silently.
Voight squeezed Jay's shoulder, “We’ll let her rest, come back later?”
Jay nodded, not bidding you goodbye as he stomped out of the room. You hadn’t seen him this mad in forever, you weren’t sure if this would blow over as easily as your other fights. Voight followed after Jay, he told you to get some rest then followed his detective to try to calm him down.
Will got up to leave too, he told you to rest and said he would come back soon. When the three left, it was only Hailey who stayed behind.
“I know you’ve been struggling at school,” She took a seat on the bed next to you, “I know what that’s like.”
You fiddled with your fingers, not wanting to admit she was right.
“You know what happened today wasn’t right,” Hailey continued, “Jay wants to press charges.”
“What? No! That’ll just make it wor…” You stopped yourself.
“Make what worse?” Hailey pressed.
You took a deep breath, trying not to get upset.
“Whatever is going on, I can help,” Hailey promised.
“You can’t get me out of that school,” You scowled.
“I think after today, that might be possible.”
You leaned back into the pillows. Dr Asher had given you some pain meds for your head, they removed the sharp pain and replaced it with a dull throb. You could feel it more as you got more upset.
“There’s this stupid rumor that my parents are addicts,” you explained, “Madison is always taunting me with it, saying that's why no one ever comes to parent evenings or teacher interviews…”
Hailey didn’t say anything, she just sat listening patiently.
“Before you guys came, she asked why my parents weren’t here and I said that I would rather have my family over her fraud one.”
Hailey nodded as she listened.
“It was stupid and as soon as I said it, I regretted it. When we were outside I went inside to go to the bathroom and Madison and her friends followed me… They, uh… Madison wanted to know why I said it and I apologized but she didn’t- she, she didn’t care and…”
Hailey got the cue, “Okay. It’s alright.” She pulled you into a gentle hug. “Everything’s going to be alright.”

Accident
Connor Rhodes x Fem!Reader
A/N: cutesy little one shot that i dont rlly like but whatever. hope you guys enjoy it. I love Connor, but god I really need to pick a hyper fixation. Guess who’s loving Chicago P.D. rn???
warnings: cussing (i think), not proofread, canon typical medical talk? (i think), kissing, confrontation.
Tumblr media
You always hated driving. Not that you sucked at it or anything, you just never trusted any other driver on the road.
It could be considered an ‘irrational fear’ but you would consider it being cautionary and safe. Nothing wrong with that. Well until you actually had to drive for yourself. Then there was everything wrong with it. The unnecessary anxiety, triple checking your surroundings, not being able to fully be comfortable. Just not your cup of tea. Especially today.
Moments like these make you miss your ex. He always drove you everywhere. It was like a deal you guys had, he would drive and you would cook. It’s not like either of you weren’t capable of doing those tasks, it’s just when you have someone else who would rather do it for you, why not?
Today however there was no avoiding you driving. You had to testify in court for a case you worked awhile back. Perks of being a detective. Well at least the plan was to testify in court. That was until about an hour ago before you got T-boned in the middle of an intersection.
A drunk driver ran a red light hitting your driver side door trapping you in the car. You became unconscious on impact, but luckily for you Firehouse 51 had been the one to respond to your accident.
You woke up in the ambulance shocked of course, but relief came over you as you realized Sylvie Brett had been your EMT.
“What happened?” You asked a little out of breath.
“Hey you’re okay. It was just a car accident. Other driver was completely fine, Burgess and Atwater took him in. You were unconscious when we found you, but we think it was just from shock. You have no major injuries besides what may be a fracture on your left forearm, we’re taking you to med to have them run some more tests.”
Processing the information, you look at your left arm to see that it is definitely broken. Lucky for you, you can’t exactly feel it at the moment so you just sigh. After a few seconds you feel like you’re forgetting something. Wait. Shit.
“Do you think i’ll be able to make it to court in…” checking the time on your now broken watch, “15 minutes.” Fuck.
“I think you’ll be lucky if they don’t keep you overnight for observation,” She says will a wry smile.
“We’re about 3 minutes from med if that helps!” Chout tells from the drivers seat.
No Chout. It doesn’t help.
“Just my luck.” You mutter rolling your eyes.
When you arrived at Med, Will Halstead ended up being your doctor.
“Jeez Y/N, what’d you do this time?” He asks with a joking smile as you’re rolled into the treatment room.
“Oh y’know, the usual.” You joke back wincing a little as he checks your arm.
“Well, as you probably know this arm is definitely broken. April order a portable x-ray and push some pain meds for our dear Y/N here. As for right now since your lucid we can rule out any major injuries, I’m gonna do some more tests to make sure you don’t have a concussion but-”
“Y/N, what the hell happened?!”
Both you and Will look at the man who interrupted him, of course he showed up. Somehow despite you guys being broken up, he still shows up everywhere.
“Connor, what are you doing here?” You ask as he approaches you with more ease.
“Yeah, Connor, Y/N is my patient and I’m pretty sure this would still be considered conflict of interest.” Will adds on earning an eye roll from Dr. Rhodes.
“I’m still your emergency contact.” Connor says holding up your possessions in a matter of fact tone.
“Oh.” Is all your able to say before Will takes a big inhale.
“Well, I’m gonna come back when the x-ray gets here.” Will says a little awkwardly as he shuffles out of the room.
Connor hands sets your things at the foot of your bed earning a muttered thanks from you. Connor turns to leave, but ultimately turns around to stay.
“What happened?” He asks again more worried this time.
“I’m fine-”
“That’s not what I asked. You’re in my ED with a broken forearm and a narly cut on your head, what happened?” He asks folding his arms with a furrowed brow.
“Car accident. I got t-boned at the intersection next to the court house. Guy ran a red light…” You say sheepishly not looking Connor in the eye.
Before you know it Connor had marched his way over to you grabbing your jaw gently to get a better look at your head.
“The cut doesn’t seem too bad. Halstead should be able to close it without stitches.” Connor looked at you with soft eyes, the way he would when you guys were together. Still holding your face, you couldn’t help but melt under his gaze. Subconsciously leaning into his hold you look up at him through your lashes.
“Thanks for being here.”
Connor nods in response and finally lets you go. Sitting in the chair behind him you give him a quizzical look.
“I’m not leaving until you’re all taken care of. You shouldn’t have to sit here alone.” He says resting in the chair kicking one leg over the other.
You chuckle at his response and slightly frown.
“Before I leave I’ll make sure I take you off my emergency contact list,” You say avoiding his gaze.
“What? No? You don’t have to do that.” He says defiantly.
“Yes I do? We broke up remember.” You say finally looking at him again.
“Okay, well,”
“Exactly. There’s no reason you should be getting called when-”
“When you have an emergency? Yeah. Okay.” He interrupts you rolling his eyes.
“Connor, we’re not together anymore. Frankly it’s non of your business what emergencies I have.” You say shrugging. Having this conversation was hurting you more than you let on but it was necessary.
“Well what if we were together? Then what?” He asks making you furrow your brows.
“We’re not though?”
“But what if we were? What if we got back together?”
“We won’t. We wanted different things. We were never meant to work out.”
“But what if we wanted the same things? There’s no reason we should be broken up right now.”
“Connor! What do you want?! You left me!” You say finally snapping with tears coming to your eyes.
“I want you.” He says standing up and grabbing your hand.
“When I got the call that you got hurt, I finally realized that I couldn’t live without you. I’ve been trying for these last few weeks, to make you happy. We had the talk where we wanted different things, and I just made the choice for the both of us. It was wrong. You could’ve died today and I cannot live without you any longer Y/N.”
You deeply exhale as you let his words sink in.
“You just can’t cook on your own can you, Connor?” You asked semi-jokingly but also semi-serious.
Connor scoffs and puts a hand to his chest in disbelief. “Me? Not being able to cook without you? How dare you ever insinuate such a thing!”
Rolling your eyes you pull his hand that you’re still holding closer to you, bringing him down to your level.
Pressing a deep kiss to his lips he holds your face with his other hand. Only pulling away slightly you look into his eyes to try and see what he’s thinking.
“So do you want to try again?” He asks anxiously.
Kissing him again harshly he chuckles in response.
“Does that answer your question?” You ask him to which he smiles.
“Without a doubt.” He says leaning his forehead against yours.

Impulsive Decisions
Tumblr media
The fire raged on with a ferocity that seemed to devour everything that was in its path. Amidst the chaos, YN Voight stood on the opposite side of the street, her pounding against her chest as the sound of everyone’s cries filled the air. But there was one cry in particular that caught her undivided attention. The wails of a small child out of a second story window were the only one the young woman could focus on during all the commotion around her, fueling her determination as she watched the firemen around her scramble.
Without a moment of hesitation, YNN dashed into the blazes of the inferno, ignoring the calls of her to stop what she was doing and having her senses overwhelmed from the heat and smoke that now surrounded her. The intensity of her surroundings fueled her focus as she navigated the burning structure, each step being coordinated and careful maneuver.  The child’s cries guided YN’s way through the billowing smoke and constant falling debris.
With adrenaline as her only ally through the blazing heat and flames, she found the little boy, trapped in the far corner of his family’s apartment. Fear was etched across his tear-stained face. The Voight girl scooped up the small child, shielding his fragile frame from the danger that surrounded the two of them. As they made their way back out of the fiery blaze, YN passed a few other people that hadn’t quite yet found their way out of the building and continued to guide them out.
When they all finally emerged from the roaring inferno, her heart raced as she cradled the child protectively in her arms close to her chest. Will Halstead, seasoned doctor at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center as well as her boyfriend, and her father, Sergeant Hank Voight, dashed forward with evident concern etched upon their faces.
“My god, YNN!” Will voice cut through the chaos that surrounded them all. His eyes instantly began scanning over her body as well as the small boy’s for any injury that could have come to them as they braved the blazes. Relief flooded his expression as he found the two relatively unscathed.
Hank’s voice bellowed soon after, his authoritative tone laced with worry and anger towards his daughter. “What the hell were you thinking, YN?” He questioned her as Dr. Halstead took the child from her arms to return him to his parents who awaited off to the side. “Running into a fire like that? That was a careless and stupid move on your part?”
“I didn’t do anything that you wouldn’t have done yourself.” The YHC girl said as she looked into her father’s eyes and tried to catch her breath from the adrenaline high she was coming down from.
“Excuse me, Serge, if I may,” Will said as he stepped back up to the two of them, his voice firm but calm. “If it wasn’t for your daughter’s bravery all those people would have burned up in the flames. She saved them. YNN, saved a lot of people today. People who were trapped in their own homes and couldn’t find a way out. It takes a lot of courage to do what she just did. She only did what her father has taught her.”
The gravity of his words hung heavy in the air between the three of them, testament of his girlfriend’s strong will to be an ally to those less fortunate than her. Hank’s expression soften as he looked around them at the dozens of people his daughter helped, including and especially the little boy she came out carrying.
He looked back at YN with with gentle eyes, now that he had thought about everything that had transpired within the last half hour. “Get her checked out, will you?” He asked the Halstead man, in a slight grumble. “With how long you were in the building, the amount of smoke you inhaled isn’t good for anyone.”
As YNN sat in the ambulance, she couldn’t help but feel a storm of emotions swirling within her. Will stood by her side in a silent form of support, his presence a reassurance in the midst of everything going on. She knew her impulsive actions worried not only her father but him as well, but her sole focus had been on saving the boy.
“Thank you,” she said pulling the oxygen mask away from her face slightly. “Not only from saving me from Daddy’s lecture, but for just being here.”
Will smiled and reached out, taking her hand in his. “Babygirl, no matter what you do, I’ll support you. It’s just unfortunate that when dating a Voight, her dangerous and impulsive decisions come with the territory.” He stated with a small chuckle which in turn made the yea eyed girl let out a giggle of her own as she placed the mask back in its spot.

He stays by your side the whole time till you wake up and first lectures you why you didn't talk to him but as you tell him you didn't want to put more on his plate he feels bad for not being there for you and promises this will change? I craaaave some Connor fluff if that's fine with you 🩷
Title : "Talk to me"
A/n : I loveeeee Connor fluff! thank you for this request and I hope you’ll enjoy reading! :) (sorry it took me so long to write this)
Warnings : passing out, hospitals, tiny bit of angst (if there is anything I should add please lmk!)
Tumblr media
Lately Med was really busy since it was the middle of a hot summer and nearly everyone was on summer break or something. Which meant you and Connor couldn't spend as much time together as you used to. Usually you would at least have the time to eat a meal together or just talk, but now you both barely had the time. Which made your mood a little sour.
You also started to experience some chest pain and you were feeling sick, but you decided to not tell Connor about it since you knew he had a lot going on. And you didn’t want to burden him with your problems.
That was until one morning you just felt horrible, but you knew you had to go to work since the ER would be crowded and you just brushed it off thinking it's not that big of a deal. Maggie immediately saw something was wrong as soon as you stepped into the ER.
While heading towards the breakroom you started to feel dizzy and the world began to spin. Before you knew it your legs gave up under you and you nearly collapsed onto the floor.
Luckily Will was following you and he caught you in time. “MAGGIE!” He yelled, gently placing you onto the ground. Maggie quickly ran over and ordered Will to take you to an empty spare room while she paged Connor.
Connor ran as fast as he could to the ER as soon as Maggie paged him. “How is she?” He panted leaning on the door to your room. “She’s alright, just a little dehydrated and weak. Y/n is currently asleep but you’re welcome to stay here till she wakes up.” Maggie smiled, patting his shoulder and walking out.
Softly walking up to your bed, he sat down next to you, intertwining your fingers together. He was exhausted and he felt guilty since recently he barely spent time with you. It made him feel like the worst boyfriend ever.
Connor simply sat down next to your bed and grabbed you hand, softly tracing small shapes into your palm. Sighing to himself, he kept on asking the same question over and over again in his head. “Why didn’t I notice something was wrong?”
And he sat like that in the uncomfortable hospital chair, holding your hand while waiting for you to wake up. He didn’t plan on leaving anytime soon. Maggie came in to check on you and bring Connor some water, gently saying that he should also stay hydrated.
He was beginning to fall asleep when he felt that you were starting to wake up. Getting up as fast as he could, he yelled for a doctor, while reaching to check if you were alright.
You woke up feeling so confused. The last thing you remembered was walking towards the breakroom and then collapsing and now you were in a hospital bed. “Y/n you scared me so badly. Are you feeling any better?” Connor asked, leaning down to place a small kiss on your forehead. You just nodded in response, feeling to weak to speak.
After Will finished checking you over, he announced that he would go get your discharge papers ready. Connor just nodded and sat back down, still holding onto your hand. “What happened?” He asked you, looking at you with concern written all over his face. “I started feeling dizzy and then I just collapsed…” You trailed off, not looking Connor in the eyes.
“C’mon sweetheart. Talk to me, what’s wrong?” Connor replied, placing a gentle kiss onto your knuckles. “I’m sorry, I didn’t want to bother you with how I’m feeling, since I know you have a lot going on and I just…I just didn’t want to bother you with the random chest pains I’ve been having and stuff.” You mumbled, Connor sighed at your words.
“Y/n/n you have nothing to apologise for. You didn’t do anything wrong. I should be the one apologising to you. Since I never wanted to make you feel less important to me or something. I promise this will change. I’m really sorry, I never wanted for you to feel like you couldn't talk to me. No matter what, I'm here for you and once again I’m really sorry.” He said sadly. You could see how bad he was now feeling.
“I love you Connor and I always will. C’mere.” You said, shuffling a little on your hospital bed, so that Connor could sit down next to you. Pulling him into a big hug you simply sat like that holding each other. He pulled away for a second, to place a soft kiss onto your lips. “I love you more Y/n/n. Just please don’t ever scare me like that again.” You nodded in response, while Connor simply buried his face into your neck.
Nothing else mattered in that moment.
