The Adventure Zone: The Eleventh Hour by the McElroys and Carey Pietsch

i'm an enormous McElroys fan, especially of The Adventure Zone: Balance, and these graphic novel adaptations are absolute highlights of my year every time a new one comes out!! i read this the day my preorder arrived, and flipped through it again just now to write about it here. what an absolute joy. as the previous four volumes were, this is an incredible combo of funny, dark, moving, wacky, mysterious, everything that makes the podcast wonderful, with the added benefit of fantastic art and some very clever editing to make the narrative hit even harder. TAZ is the kind of story that rewards return visits (in my case, so, so many return visits to the audio), and this volume really ramps up that feeling! i'm sure it's a delight to a first-time reader, but to me it's just so perfectly, tactically constructed to make me cry as much as possible! with joy! with sadness! with unbearable anticipation for everything i know is to come! torturous in the best way.

some specific highlights of this volume include introductions of characters i adore, like Ren, proprietor of a saloon and Taako's biggest fan (and she's fat!! thank you Carey for this gift), and Istus, a glorious goddess of time who delivers an icon line, and Roswell, they/them animated clay in a suit of armor plus bird (how does one even explain Roswell), absolute sweet cinnamon roll. i also super duper loved the backstories we get about our three main boys in this volume, it was handled beautifully, the visuals are so !!!!!!!

the deets

how i read it: a physical copy! in fact i have multiple copies, because i'm one of those people. i carried one from room to room with me the day it came out, i was so in love i couldn't let it out of my sight.

try this if you: like the podcast, obv, but also try the graphic novels starting with volume 1 if you keep hearing about TAZ but can't focus on podcasts! or just if you like fun, earnest, wacky fantasy that's both totally irreverent and also takes itself seriously just in time to wound you in the heart muscle.

After decades of elusive behavior and difficulty in getting adequate samples, in 1996, Scientists were finally able to confirm that Mothmen have a complex, multi-generational migratory cycle, and that their primary egg-laying grounds are in the central valley of Nihofornia. Fresno Nightcrawlers are in fact, laval Mothmen. The discovery led to massive public adoration of the former omen of doom and improved conservation efforts, and now Mothmen numbers have rebounded and they occupy nearly all of their native range.

And swallow they do! The Loot Lizard earned it's nickname from its voracious appetite, indiscriminate palette and inability to chew, leading to Behir eating any vaugely animal-shaped object around them and horking up the indegestible pieces later.

Ambitious Adventurers have intermittently had sucess taming wild Behir- they make excellent mounts in enclosed spaces and any suspicious locked chest or ichor-covered idol can be tossed down the gullet of a tame Behir to be cleaned by it's powerful stomach, or digested if it happens to be a mimic, and the resalable parts regurgitated later.

Unfortunately, the popularity of Dungeon-crawling adventuring in the late middle ages, and the lack of knowledge about the Behir's long reproductive cycle (a Behir doesn't reach sexual maturity until age 60-80 at the earliest and may only produce two or three clutches of one or two eggs in it's life) lead to extensive poaching of Behir and the devastation of thier populations, and now they are only rarely found in a tiny sliver of thier previous rang, in the Baja Peninsula.

Tristan was very enamored of Behir in his youth and always wanted a pet one, much like how I wanted a Pet Tiger when I was six. His mom did make him a body-pillow size Behir Plushie and "Beans" still lives on his bed at home.

[Oh gods I just had the thought that since Taako's got echolocation and shit that it's near impossible to sneak on him. You can't gossip in the other room without him eavesdropping. The only place your secrets are safe is in your head and that's because Taako almost never uses divination spells. This changes everything!]

Oh geez, that’s true?? You’ve got to have some pretty good hearing to pick up on echolocation, so Taako’s hearing in general must be phenomenal. I’ll take your “Taako is almost impossible to sneak up on” though and raise you “Taako and Lup are both impossible to sneak up on” (because I really do see them as both having echolocation, it seems likely they’d have the same hearing capabilities).

It’s a great skill to have as kids - sometimes they’ve had to leave in the night to avoid danger, or have overheard some vital information through the walls of a wagon (like travel plans or where the gold is hidden), and it gives them just enough of an advantage to make up for their young age.

I’m not sure when the IPRE find out about it - I think Davenport probably knows from the beginning, because they must go through some kind of testing and their reaction times are too good. It probably takes a while before everyone else finds out - it’s an advantage that Taako and Lup probably wouldn’t let go of until they start to feel comfortable around these people. Magnus tries to do his routine of jumping out and shouting his name and Lup just decks him because she heard him coming down the hall. After they find out, the crew has to take extra care to have secret conversations when they know the twins aren’t around (which is a bit of a toss-up anyway since Taako knows Blink). Lucretia devises a system of passed notes to plan a surprise birthday party for the twins one year.

At the BoB, Taako is the one people go to for any gossip because he somehow knows it all (Lucretia is the only one who knows how he knows, and she takes special, magical precautions). Angus somehow, occasionally, convinces Taako to accompany him on investigations because hearing through walls is really good for that - it’s almost not worth it because Taako is almost always deliberately useless.

There’s not a necromancer dead or alive who can sneak past Lup when she’s after them. It’s honestly terrifying, and it’s absolutely not worth it to try to run.

Lucy Phillips - CYO, pale skin, Jess mold, long straight black hair, green eyes, freckles, no outfit preference as I have to sew her outfits myself (probably will get the pink party dress to save as a party outfit for Celestina). She's from England, she dresses in a sorta goth/pink style, she was adopted into her family, she can play bass guitar and sing really well, and despite her cool and calm personality, she's sweet and emotional when she opens up. She makes friends with Celestina, and they became girlfriends when they're teenagers.

Jason Gomez - Either a boy Sonali mold, or a Josefina rewigged into a boy doll, may go with the latter since the boy doll is discontinued, unless I find a good deal. He has been friends with Celestina and Kailey a few years, and became Lucy's friend as well. He loves anime and gaming, and would often go to cosplay at conventions. He plays the drums, as he learned to do so from Celestina's mom, and he likes acting in the school plays. He comes out as non-binary in his teens, using he/him or they/them pronouns, and he also starts dating Kailey.

Morti Smith - CYO, fair skin, Josefina mold, hazel eyes, long curly brown hair, freckles. So she's my Rick and Morty OC, one of the many alternative Mortys. It's a bit of a long story, but basically in my AU/dimension, thing, Morti lives with her grandpa Rick, wanting to stay there after her parents divorce, her relationship with her Rick is more healthier than C-137's Rick and Morty (the ones from the show), but he can be a bit overprotective of her. Morti has the same classes as Cy, and ends up making friends with the rest of the friend group. Like Morty from the show, she tends to stutter and say "oh geeze", but unlike Morty, while she struggles in school like him, she has a special gift for inventing. I also want to make so many cute yellow outfits for her haha. Yeah I know it's weird, crossing my Rick and Morty OC into my Gorillaz universe, I don't care.

Johnny Daley aka JD - Logan doll, but with his hair spiked. He's close friends with Kami and Ellie. He's a bit of a prankster, and he loves skateboarding, and he often has his favorite video camera with him. He wants to either be a professional skateboarder like Tony Hawk, or be a movie director. He'd more likely post videos to YouTube sometime in his teens. A lot of my 2000's kids OC were based off kids I knew in school, I gave him the same last name as a kid in class, but his first name was because something about the Logan doll reminded me of Johnny Knoxville (I'll admit it, I've been on a Jackass kick lately haha), and idk, it works because he was popular in the 2000's lol.

Jazzlyn "Jazzie" McElroy - Dark skin, Addy mold, long textured hair, no specific doll in mind, know it when I see it. Best friends with Kami and Ellie. She's very smart, and loves reading books and hopes to be a writer someday, or an actress. She's probably the most mature one of the group. She often babysits her little brother when her mom is working (sometimes together with Kami and her siblings of they're able to), her dad isn't home as he's away fighting in the army. Her favorite American Girls are Addy and Molly. She moves away during Changes for Kami, much to the sadness of her friends. I gave her the same first name as an old friend from elementary school.

Riley Jones and Jason Jones - Ashlynn Wellie Wisher doll (but rewigged with curly black hair) and Caring For Baby doll (redressed as boy) respectively. Riley is Kami's five year old sister and Jason is her 2 year old brother. Kami babysits her siblings in a lot of her stories, so it made sense to me to have them too. They're based off my younger siblings.

Alright here’s my belated Thoughts on that latest TSP episode. I should add again, I am in no way saying people shouldn’t like this show, I just need to be petty on my own blog.

- Stafford’s Performative Masculinity is a bit Much, even for a sixteenth century man

- Katherine doesn’t want Wolsey appointed chancellor because that would give him too much power and the chancellor is apparently the second most powerful man in the kingdom... so powerful in fact that I’m not even sure we’ve seen the current chancellor on screen, except in his ecclesiastical role as archbishop of Canterbury

- Ah the migrating towers of Holyrood. They weren’t there for the last two episodes and they won’t be there next scene either but they’ll be *theoretically* here all week folks.

- It is mildly hilarious that this show seems to think that every single moment in Scottish politics took place in one wee house in Somerset “Edinburgh”, and the only people who are ever involved are two dozen stereotypical Scottish noblemen, and one Englishwoman (and no clergy? Which is extremely weird given how heavily involved they were in royal administration).

- Not to mention they imply Holyrood is meant to be Edinburgh (it is now, then it was actually in the burgh of the Canongate but close enough) and yet the burgh skyline of Edinburgh is never visible in the background of these shots, just rolling fields and a nondescript hill that I assume is meant to be Arthur’s seat.

- Ok so we’re portraying Angus as the poetic soul instead of his uncle, that’s fine, that makes no sense but it’s fine.

- Who the fuck is Bishop McElroy. Setting aside the fact that McElroy was more common in Ireland than Scotland during the sixteenth century (and there were no major noble or even influential lairdly families bearing the surname), why could they not have just done a google search and found out that, oh yeah, there were Real Life Scottish Bishops in 1515, anyone of whom would have done. And I don’t know why they mucked about with the timeline but if they were going to muck around with the timeline anyway then then how about maybe even, dare I say it, Gavin Douglas, bishop-elect of Dunkeld???

- Also I didn’t quite catch the full line so I may have misheard but I think Margaret states that they got married in the kirk of South Queensferry? I mean tbh this only confirms my belief that the writers think everything happened in the vicinity of Edinburgh (and that they didn’t even bother to think to TRY and find out where the marriage might have taken place, just started tossing a few Scottish place names out there as if that would do. The Ferry’s not even that private, it was on a major pilgrimage route and an important crossing point over the Forth). It’s also a bit irritating because there’s no reason for the inaccuracies? They didn’t have to show the wedding so they didn’t have to change the location or characters for ease of filming or anything, it’s just a throwaway line, there’s no reason for them to make up a bishop and unlikely wedding location? Anyway join us next week as Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn conduct their affair in the middle of London Bridge.

- Also excuse me while I make an unconvinced noise at that line about how the Douglases (i.e. all of them, not just the Red ones) have always ‘licked the balls of England’. While their notoriety for being Shady As Fuck and occasionally siding with the English was certainly well known, no sixteenth century Scotsman worth his salt would have sullied the name of the Good Sir James just to score points off the Angus branch of the family.

- (Maybe this is a bad time to point out that they’re not technically licking ‘balls’ in this instance either...)

- I take it back there was one (1) woman very briefly in that scene where Margaret and “Angus” rushed to grab the bairns. She was promptly never seen again. Confirmed Cryptid.

- Also where did all the other bairns (James IV’s ones, not Margaret’s) go. I mean they were actually there last episode I think, so it’s not like they were implying that Margaret got rid of them as soon as she could. Have they FINALLY grown up?

- How quickly do letters travel in this world? How long have they been in that cellar? Are they still there?

- Wait so now Katherine of Aragon knows his name is Archibald??? Why has everyone been calling him ‘Angus Douglas’ then, even when his dad (and presumably grandfather) was alive?

- Lol @ Henry ‘after all I’ve done for her’. Do tell, what HAVE you done for Margaret.

- Hang on so Thomas Boleyn is Earl of Wiltshire already and yet his father-in-law Thomas Howard still isn’t duke of Norfolk

- Second LOL @ an archbishop of York willfully summoning a naturalised Frenchman to Scotland without the king of England’s permission, as if Scotland lay in his gift and as if that was in any way a good idea, even for some political point-scoring

- “Margaret’s sons must take the throne”- Katherine are you aware that James V was crowned King of Scots not two weeks after Flodden, and approximately seven months before his younger brother Alexander was even born.

- Again, HOW LONG HAVE THEY BEEN IN THE CELLAR? Angus has grown a BEARD.

- He’s not the future king he IS the king. A tiny toddler king. You help him go potty you disrespectful shite, I don’t care if you’re having a nervous breakdown. (May I just point out again it is CRIMINAL that David Lindsay isn’t in this)

- We all pause for An Exaggerated Whispering Scene, that great period drama staple. I mean are we sure they’re gossiping about Henry and a *woman*, because the way people are talking about Wolsey at that dinner once again makes it look like he’s the real Mistress

- So wait how is this ‘letting’ Margaret go with Howard thing supposed to work. Is it like knock-knock special delivery for the duke of Norfolk, here you go please take your princess back.

- And when exactly did Angus do all this negotiating when he has supposedly been stuck in a cellar for weeks. Gavin Douglas has a lot to answer for, and not just the sheer length of the Eneados.

- ‘Bog-fuckers’ - not a bog in sight in this west country version of Scotland. Also er, just how does one fuck a bog. Asking for a friend.

- I’m just being pedantic, Howard’s foul mouth is actually the only genuine piece of comedy the writers can come up with in this tv show.

- Howard putting up a good front here but come on there’s like six of them and about two dozen Miscellaneous Scotsmen. I know that the English were very practised in quartering Scots whenever they liked but eight to one is not good odds, even for the victor of Flodden.

- Yeah that whole scene is not how the history worked. At All. But let’s let them ride dramatically away across a field as if it’s at all plausible. (Also why is it always fields- I know Scotland’s roads were bad in the sixteenth century, but seriously they were at least *technically* roads when you got near Edinburgh)

- And there was definitely no Isabella Hoppringle, which is again, criminal. I mean I expected it but it’s still sad. Mind you I suppose that might imply that Scottish women are real creatures and not cryptids which, as we know, is totally unrealistic.

- Even weirder though, they’re not including Margaret Douglas? Why?

- Only one man has ever been in the king’s rooms? Seriously? You expect us to believe this, not only from a historical accuracy perspective, but also from the tv show that gave us implied Wolsey/Henry?

- The Great English Midwife Shortage c.1509-1516

- Do NONE of the many many grown-up people at the English court understand the lottery of birth and that you can’t just like, assume the baby will be a boy even if you hope it will. Wishful thinking is one thing (and common) but this wholehearted belief thing is frankly unrealistic.

- It’s also unfair how they’re treating Mary as unloved by both her parents. We know Katherine loved her daughter in some way, and it’s also not really fair to say that Henry VIII was anything less than a doting father in her early years.

- And the record for fastest churching goes to Katherine again. Cracking cape though.

- Katherine all ‘he won’t visit his daughter’- you won’t even look at her either though. How is this a sympathetic depiction of Katherine again? Don’t get me wrong, it’s absolutely understandable if a royal mother didn’t always want to hold her daughter but really? After every other negative light they’ve shown Katherine in and called it Empowerment?

- Hey I don’t know much about English customs but seems to me that inviting the French to intervene in Scotland without consulting the king might just be a beheading offence Wolsey. AND THEN HENRY COVERS FOR HIM? THE PAGES OF ENGLISH HISTORY BOOKS ARE NOT STAINED WITH THE BLOOD OF CIVIL SERVANTS EXECUTED FOR FAR LESSER OFFENCES FOR THIS KIND OF NONSENSE TO BE ACCEPTABLE.

- People do kiss, Margaret Pole. That was a common thing. MEN kissed each other goddamnit. Not really good enough. I mean by your logic Katherine should have broken up with Henry after her dad laid one on him in the first episode.

- How is it that Thomas More, of all people, has the Goss.

- Oh and apparently there was also a National Laundress Shortage in 1516 too.

Ok so it was about as meh as every other episode but I think this one really brought home to me how poorly thought out Margaret’s storyline was. I mean usually these period dramas have to insert Drama for no reason to keep people interested, but Margaret’s life was FULL of drama and they had so much to work with. Instead they seem to have actually stripped most of the drama out to tell an utterly incomprehensible story about a bunch of stereotypical Scotsmen, who all live in the same house in Fake Edinburgh, chasing the only woman in Scotland into the cellar, and then posting her off back to England a few weeks later.

To everyone bothered with Duck’s ending...

(this is your warning that there will be spoilers)

Look, I get it. I mean, I really do--Duck ending up with Minerva happened spur of the moment and literally out of nowhere, just as with many of the incredible and wonderful things about Duck that Justin McElroy has been kind enough to gift us with over the past two years.

But, it was spur of the moment nonetheless. And besides that, there were other ships that could’ve been more probable--Indrunk, Dunno, or just Duck on his own if he wanted that. And I get that.

But just like every other unexpected twist Justin has tossed at us about Duck, this one lands just perfectly. He knew he was being served up a fastball special by saying that one little word, and he still managed to fuckin’ knock it out of the park with his explanation, to the point that he sold many people who weren’t on the Waynerva train a ticket straight to Waynerva paradise.

If you’re bothered with it because of the age, remember that no one had any qualms with Barry and Lup--sure, they’re immortal now, but they started falling for each other when Barry was in his thirties and Lup was in her early 100′s.

If you’re bothered with it because ‘oh, it’s a boring hetero ship’, maybe you should take a good long look in the mirror and question whether, in a story filled with other excellent queer ships, you want to nitpick about the one (1) mlw ship.

They’ve got the history, the fun personalities, and a relationship that may have once been mentor and student but is now of two equals that respect each other. So, yeah, I’ve been sold on Waynerva being the endgame for Duck, and I’m happy with it.

you know how. you know. you know in taz amnesty when justin just. made up npcs. made up parts of the town. made up details about life there. and griffin was so enthusiastic and let him do it and rolled with it and built the world around what justin built.

like, justin is the type of player i aspire to be and griffin (in many ways, but specifically that one) is the type of gm i aspire to be, and i know most mainstream ttrpgs (cough d&d cough) tend to have the gm as the be-all end-all worldbuilder god and like i sure do love worldbuilding but i feel so very gifted when one of my players does some Worldbuilding At Me*

and d&d is fun and taz graduation is fun and someday i’ll catch up with it but also i want the mcelroys to play more games with collaborative worldbuilding, bcos they’re so good at it, and yeah they’ve done some improv-heavy game and griffin tried to play monster of the week with collaborative worldbuilding but it’s not the SAME there are games that structure that so you can ask ur players questions and it encourages them to make up answers and i want to hear them play more of that!!

(i also want them to play blades in the dark or a hack of it specifically bcos while i love travis what i have heard of graduation had him doing some old-style d&d dming, and i feel like he would benefit from the radically different gming style of forged in the dark games. also bcos i love the failure system of fitd games gdi i want to hear the mcelroys play with that. i know it’s a p dark system so they prolly wouldn’t play it but it’d be FUN and there are lighter games.)

first, thank you for this gift. i’ve been waiting for this for so long. second, thank you for (i assume) following me even though you don’t know about taz. ok i’m gonna start a read more bc i bet this is gonna be long

the adventure zone is a podcast hosted by brothers justin, travis, and griffin mcelroy, with their dad, clint. they play various rpgs, usually dnd. the first season, balance, was dnd with griffin as the dm and justin, travis, and clint as taako, magnus, and merle respectively. balance had 7 arcs- different parts of the story, each involving the collection of a grand relic: here there be gerblins, murder on the rockport limited, petals to the metal, the crystal kingdom, the eleventh hour, the suffering game, and the stolen century. the three-part finale was called story and song.

when balance ended, they did a few mini-arcs to figure out what to do next. clint dmed commitment, a superhero story, with justin, travis, and griffin as irene/kardala, nadiya, and remy. next, griffin dmed amnesty, a monster-hunting story, with justin, travis, and clint as duck, aubrey, and ned. finally, travis dmed dust, an old west/supernatural story, with justin, griffin, and clint as augustus, errol, and gandy. they then settled on amnesty, and season 2 started, picking up where they had left off before dust. amnesty had arcs within the story, but they weren’t as defined as balance.

amnesty ended a few months ago, and instead of doing mini-arcs, they started season 3, graduation, pretty much right away. graduation is a story of heroes and villains, but the real villain is accounting. this is not a joke. justin, griffin, and clint play the firbolg (aka bud, firby, dr. mushrooms, and others. he still doesn’t have a real name), fitzroy, and argo.

i recommend starting from the very beginning. just a heads up: it starts fairly slowly. the quality of the first episodes compared to the most recent is... not great. you can listen to it on spotify or itunes/google play/whatever. the network that hosts the show, maximum fun, has all the episodes as well as many transcripts here.

I don’t know why I put this off for so long, something for me to think about later I suppose. Hell I don’t think half of these answers are well articulated enough - ah well, here’s an attempt

Are you staying home from work/school?

Yes, I caught a plane out of the UK as soon as the course I was taking was canceled.

If you’re staying home, who’s there with you?

I’m with my parents and younger sibling and two dogs.

Are you a homebody?

Yes, I’m very good at making a burrow and staying put for long periods. As long as I have books, a notebook, a laptop, my switch, and a crust of bread and cheese, all will be well. I will adapt no matter what comes in the future.

What movies have you watched recently? What shows are you watching?

There’s a Korean drama I started watching recently with like time-traveling doctors which has been very cool so far, called “Live Up to Your Name” I’m excited to see where it leads

“Avenue 5″ is...okay I suppose, had to stop cause it was giving me too much anxiety ^^’’ Been watching a bit of “Magnum P.I” as well just, a loooooooot of Animal Crossing letsplays, and Letsplays in general (been exploring Snap Cubes channel and their Luigi’s Mansion 3 run)

As for movies, I haven’t sat myself down to watch a movie since the in-flight movies in my return plane ride. To which I watched “Detective Pikachu” (very amazing very adorable! heck yeah) attempted to watch...well I don't know what I attempted to watch but for the remainder of the flight I watched “Jojo Rabbit” on repeat and kept laughing and crying and laughing. It was a very very good movie, and honestly can’t wait to watch it again.

And I know this isn’t ‘watching’ but I’ve also been re-listening to The Adventure Zone Balance arc.

An event that you were looking forward to that got cancelled?

A lot of events actually.

The a course I was taking in Uxbridge at the Pinewood Studios, an audition to get into a very prestigious showcase that would have been performed in front of casting directors and scouts, a job at a theater, an apartment, among other things. It...it felt like my life was finally starting to shape into, idk, something. I haven’t been that excited and hopeful about my career and just...the sense of being an adult(tm) since moving to LA.

But it’s okay, this was all out of our hands, and despite feeling massively disappointed and just...idk...a feeling I can’t describe yet, who knows what the future will hold...right?

Time will tell, in the meantime let’s keep doing our best.

What music are you listening to?

Ler’s Amazing playlist from her beautiful birthday gift, it’s been on repeat for sometime and a BIG help getting into certain writing moods!! AAAH Honestly I’m still just blown away!!! UTTERLY and COMPLETELY!

I’ve also been listening to just..random stuff really, whatever that could get me a step closer to writing.

What are you reading?

Still slowly going through Neverwhere, and re-reading Sandman, but aside from that A LOT OF AMAZING AND AWESOME THINGS. I have a server (still in beta that I’d like to keep small for now) with a few wonderful friends that is a bit like a reading-club and we get together and read out loud all sorts of things, from fanfics, to the classics, to other fiction - I think my favorite fiction piece so far is finally being able to dive into Sir Terry Pratchett’s Discworld properly. [ palpitates over Monstrous Regiment ]

jfjdlja jokes aside, I know I can get easily overwhelmed, and these days it doesn’t take me too much to feel overwhelmed so I avoid things I know might be a bit too much(tm) for me right now. Be it certain whatsapp group channels or discord channels, or content I know might make brim ‘over the line’.

Keep in mind I don’t mean this in the sense of burying my head in the sand, though...sometimes it feels like just that, so maybe this isn’t as healthy as I thought, maybe it’s just straight up avoidance? Idk...I’m just... reading, playing animal crossing, cooking with family, and taking things that are a bit much (which could range from not answering messages right away, not reading something too angsty, or not watching Broadchurch but instead watching Monty Python for the gazillionth time, maybe not listening to Mitski so much) with baby steps

Take this fic blog for example! I’ve distanced myself a bit this past week not cause of anything negative, but just needing that choice of breathing space.

If that makes sense, does that make sense? Idk, I hope it does. It’s also a bit of a slippery slope for me as I do also have a habit of just wanting to blink out of existence socially. idk...idk...

We’re going to see our way to the other side of this event one day at a time. With every sunrise we’re a day closer. Believe in kindness, no matter what certain politicians are doing and how hopeless it feels sometimes. It’s okay to feel fear, I’m scared every day, my anxiety has never been more through the roof, so I’ll share my favorite quote from one of my favorite Hobbits below. I know there are so many of us sharing these words, but I do feel like we need them, I know I do. I have it written on my board like a mantra:

Frodo : I can't do this, Sam.

Sam : I know. It's all wrong By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were, and sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy. How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad happened. But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn’t. Because they were holding on to something.

Frodo : What are we holding on to, Sam?

Sam : That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it’s worth fighting for.
