Thanks for your response ala Ruby & Yang, great stuff!
Idle aside, but do you have any thoughts on Yang's role as the sort of black sheep of the family by dint of Raven associations?
Cos like, Tai overtly favors Ruby, projects Raven onto Yang, resents Raven being rough up and is bad enough about reminders of her Yang feels she has to apologize for his negative reactions. Let alone his... Everything else.
Then there's Qrow who doesn't seem to interact with Yang over much at all and one of if not their most major interaction. Involves him straight up saying he thinks she's either a liar hurting people for fun or "crazy".
I recall someone I was chatting with wondering: Imagine doing everything you can to keep your family from breaking apart & being compared to the woman who left you when you were a baby?
Cos I do wonder how Yang feels about all that given she seems to downplay and or try to work around her family's issues when she can. Let alone what it says about the adults in the room.
smth i think about a lot is the way yang’s narrative about her childhood shifts between v2 to v5
’cause in v2 it’s: “it was tough. ruby was really torn up, my dad kind of shut down. it wasn’t long before i learned why…” all to provide context for this anecdote about putting ruby in a wagon and running away to find her mother. and then her conclusion is “my stubbornness should have gotten us killed that night.”
and while there is a degree here of yang framing the story to emphasize the point she wants blake to understand, it’s also very obvious in her delivery that the emotional reality of this memory for yang is “the time my stupidity and stubbornness almost got me and ruby eaten by grimm”—when she was [checks notes] like five, six years old, and regularly left at home unsupervised.
but in v5, it’s: “my mom left me. ruby’s mom left too. tai was always busy with school, and ruby couldn’t even talk yet; i had to pick up the pieces. i had to pick up the pieces. alone.”
aside from the telling slip (tai, not dad)—yang centers her own feelings and the harm this situation did to her this time. which is something she’s always felt but i don’t think she could have brought herself to say it out loud to anyone during the beacon arc, because it was pressed down under the guilt on display in burning the candle, the feeling of having been inadequate and too stubborn and too selfish and and and–
coughs quietly. “my stubbornness should have gotten us killed that night.” / “you were predictable. and… stubborn. and maybe a little boneheaded.” yang’s narrative about the wagon incident—which happened when she was five or six!—pinning the blame on the thing tai imagines to be her fatal flaw is…probably not coincidental. yang in v4 after a year of being loved by her team and supported by mentors like glynda / oobleck / port has the perspective to know that tai doesn’t know what he’s talking about; but as a small child who’d just had a terrifying near-death experience with her baby sister… 😶
it definitely had a big impact on the way yang sees herself
BUT i do read qrow's talk with yang in 3.8 pretty differently ->
because the context is: yang saw mercury attack her and struck back in self defense, then had like a dozen synthetic soldiers point guns in her face, then looked up and saw the replay footage of herself walking over to shoot a boy who was just kneeling on the ground. and some of the most powerful authority figures in the world are pushing this narrative that stress and adrenaline "clouded her judgment."
like this would make anyone doubt their sanity. bc holy shit.
yang, though...a couple weeks ago, yang after being knocked unconscious woke up and blearily saw someone she thought was her mother walk away from her and disappear in a flash of red light. she hasn't mentioned it to anyone, because it's just so bizarre—yang doesn't know about raven's semblance yet—she must have just been seeing things. right?
aside from raven (who isn't here) and yang (who believes she hallucinated), the only other person who knows that yang saw her mom on the train is qrow, because raven told him about it. he also knows that:
tai insisted on not telling yang ANYTHING about her mother, and qrow respected that up until now; so yang doesn't know about raven's semblance and can't make sense of what she saw.
salem's infiltrators are the same people who attacked amber, and qrow didn't get a good look at them because they seemingly vanished into thin air—pretty damn good chance that one of them has a semblance that manipulates what you see.
ozpin wants #2 kept secret, so yang has some very powerful people actively trying to convince her that she's crazy. ironwood is straight up gaslighting her.
qrow also—based on the first thing he says, which is "why'd you do it?"—seems to consider it a possibility that it is what it looked like but yang did have a good reason, and i actually do not think that is an outrageous thing for qrow specifically to think. because qrow was emotionally abused as a child, and he knows yang, and in the event that yang really did suddenly turn around and punch a guy who was kneeling on the ground, why would she do it?
glances at shay d. mann. well. maybe this kid has been harassing her? maybe he said something horrible or threatening to her and in the heat of the moment she just snapped? maybe "he attacked me, i saw him attack me" isn't really a lie per se, she's just scared that "he's been picking on me ever since he got here and he made a disgusting remark and i just couldn't take it anymore" won't be taken seriously? as in, he did attack her—verbally/emotionally.
it's probably worth asking, at least!
so, qrow leads with "why'd you do it?" in case there is some invisible reason justifying the apparent action. yang says "you know why." qrow goes okay, well, i only know what i saw, so you're either lying (i.e., yang had a reason she now isn't telling) or crazy (i.e., yang saw something different from reality that was very real to her).
she says "i'm not lying." qrow believes her: "crazy, got it."
at this point, he knows the most probable explanation is that one of salem's infiltrators fucked with her head. the inner circle's gaslighting doesn't sit right with him; he's not going to buck ozpin by telling her the truth outright, but he wants to make sure yang knows she isn't losing her mind. he also has all the info needed to guess that yang is actually really really scared that she might be crazy.
which is why he kicks off the wall and begins to pace around. the language he uses sounds dismissive, but his tone is mild and his body language implies "let's talk about it, let's figure this out."
leading to:
YANG: Who knows? Maybe I am. QROW: And here I thought your dark-haired friend was the emo one. YANG: I saw my mom. …I- I was in a lot of trouble, took a pretty hard hit. But when I came to, the person attacking me was gone, and I thought I saw… her. Her sword. Like the one in you and dad’s old picture. QROW: You’re not crazy, Yang. That was your mom, alright. Let me guess—she didn’t say a word, did she? YANG: How did you know that? QROW: I don't see my sister very often, but she does try to keep in touch... whenever it suits her. YANG: Wait—you mean you talk to her? That was real!? QROW: Yeah, she found me. Had a tip from my most recent assignment and wanted me to give you a message.
it's really telling that yang responds to him this way. 'cause we've seen how yang acts when she feels dismissed or belittled:
TAI: Well, "normal" is what you make of it. YANG: What is that supposed to mean? Do you want me to just pretend like nothing happened? I lost a part of me. A piece of me is gone. And it's never coming back. TAI: You're right. It's not coming back. But that doesn't have to stop you from becoming who you wanna be. You're Yang Xiao Long, my sunny little dragon. You can do whatever you put your mind to. So whenever you're ready to stop moping, and get back out there? I'll be there for you. YANG: I– I...
she freezes and shuts down! her teachers have to come to her rescue!—but when qrow goes "crazy, got it" and suggests she's being "emo," yang blurts out her big secret. i saw my mom. to me that suggests a level of trust and understanding that isn't there with tai: qrow says stuff like "okay, so you're crazy" and "here i thought your friend was the emo one" but what he means is "hey, i know something's really bugging you, tell me about it," and yang picks up what he's putting down.
it's akin to how ruby goes "did you miss me? DID YOU MISS ME??" and qrow's like "nope" and they both laugh. or the back-and-forth ribbing between him and the girls in 3.4. there's this layer of mild ironic meanness in the way qrow converses with his nieces that all of them are fluent in, and in this scene he's using that mode to signal that "crazy" is not off-limits, that it's okay to talk about openly.
crucially, there's a code-switch in the middle of the conversation: as soon as yang gets real and says "i saw my mom," qrow reflects that seriousness back to her. you're not crazy, that was your mom, she found me afterward and told me about it. it was real. you're okay. qrow's ability to do that—to shift into a more serious mode when irony isn't appropriate—is why yang can have this rapport with him that she doesn't have with tai, because tai isn't... being ironic when he says mean or dismissive things to her.
anyway, qrow passes on raven's terrible message and then kind of annotates it: "raven's got an interesting way of looking at the world that i don't particularly agree with, and she's dangerous." (which is a very diplomatic way of saying he thinks raven is full of shit. lol.) but then he connects this whole conversation about raven back to what happened after the match: "you're a tough egg, kiddo. don't let this tournament thing getcha down. you had a slip-up; sometimes bad things just happen."
implicitly: yang isn't crazy. what she saw on the train was real, a product of raven's personality and her semblance. sometimes bad things just happen. qrow believes that yang had the experience she says she did when she punched mercury. he doesn't know why she had that experience—yang doesn't either!—but he knows she isn't just "crazy." sometimes things that seem crazy are actually real.
remember what he tells the girls in 3.4? "you may be acting like huntresses, but you're not thinking like one." same thing here. he's telling yang, hey, you're not crazy, you know what you saw, but you don't know what or who caused you to see it. "you cut off the head of the king taijitu, but now the second head's calling the shots."
hint, hint.
it's subtler than the hints qrow drops for ruby in 3.12, but very much in the same vein, and yang is plenty smart enough to figure it out. she might... not have? in the couple of hours between this conversation and everything going to straight to hell, but if they'd had literally just one more day, just long enough for the wheels turning in yang's head to click together with what ruby heard from velvet about coco hallucinating during her and yatsu's 2v2 against emerald and mercury, she would've had it.
more... generally, i've never gotten the sense that qrow projects raven's flaws onto yang in the way that tai does; qrow is definitely a lot closer with ruby than yang, but i think that has less to do with favoritism on qrow's part than it does ruby thinking he's like the COOLEST uncle ever and wanting to use a scythe like he does.
'cause like, qrow isn't their parent, he doesn't live with them, he's not responsible for raising these kids like their dad is, so while he obviously did contribute to fucking them both up because: alcoholic, ultimately there just isn't the same degree of betrayal or emotional abandonment; he's not their dad. both times yang talks in detail about her childhood, it's "my mom left, ruby's mom left, tai wasn't really around, ruby couldn't even talk, i was alone"—she doesn't mention qrow. there isn't that deep hurt, that feeling that qrow is someone who left.
when he isn't drunk, yang seems to feel pretty okay around him, and qrow likewise treats her... honestly a lot better than tai does:
he stops by their dorm in v3 to hang out with both his nieces; yang is fully in sister mode—cheers for ruby to beat him until ruby loses, immediately shoves her out of the way like "my turn!! >:D"—and qrow ribs them both, takes ribbing from both of them in good humor, tells both of them "you two are gonna go far."
qrow nicknames to show affection; ruby is "pipsqueak," yang gets "firecracker."
we only see qrow's goodbye to ruby, but in 5.4 yang indicates that qrow came to talk to her before he left, too. she also has complete trust that he's keeping the promise he made to look after ruby.
yang, as noted, opens up to him about seeing her mom; she's also shocked that he's still in contact with raven and indignant that he didn't tell her sooner, but—unlike with tai—she doesn't seem surprised that qrow is willing to talk about raven in general.
which tracks with what tai says in 4.11: "despite asking him numerous times not to, i know qrow told you where you're mother's been at these days"—meaning, this was a point of contention between him and qrow. behind the scenes, while tai refused to discuss raven at all, qrow was going okay well, let me tell her then, she deserves to know. and then ultimately he just bit the bullet and told her behind tai's back. i wouldn't be surprised if it turned out qrow had been straight with yang that her dad wanted to be the one to tell her the important stuff, and he wanted to be respectful of that, but raven wasn't an off-limits topic.
general contrast between yang-tai and yang-qrow dynamics; for example both of them say almost verbatim "you've got a long way to go before you're ready for the real world" (3.4/4.4). from tai it's belittling, he's insulting her; from qrow, it's meant to encourage, it's "remember you're still new to this, you'll make mistakes, just keep learning, keep trying." (rwby does stuff like this all the time, refracting an idea in different directions to highlight contrasts between characters; ozpin's advice to ruby vs port's advice to weiss is another example.)
a lot of qrow's resentment toward raven is centered on her abandonment of yang: "did you know yang lost her arm? [...] rhetorical question, i know you know. it's just obnoxious that you'd bring up family and then carry on like your own daughter doesn't exist. [raven: "i saved her."] once. because that was your rule, right? real mom of the year material, sis." like he is PISSED on yang's behalf that raven won't even try.
my impression is that qrow—although a) often away on long missions in far away places and b) an alcoholic who sometimes got blind drunk and became a burden yang and ruby needed to take care of—when he did manage to be there, made a serious effort to connect with both of them. he ended up being closer to ruby bc she wanted to learn scythe-wielding, but i do think qrow would've trained yang too (or instead) if the girls had different combat interests.
and while his relationship with ruby has a mentorish aspect, i don't get the sense either of the girls see him as a parental figure: he wasn't part of their household, he traveled a lot, his alcoholism in combination with tai's neglect eroded the adult-child boundaries because they had to be responsible for him as often as the reverse. he's a friend who also happens to be related to them. and that's especially true for yang, because he wasn't her teacher.
(i know it's a... pretty common headcanon / fanon that qrow lived with them, but i really don't think that's supported by the text? whenever ruby or yang look back on their childhoods, the family unit is always them + tai, and qrow isolates himself out of fear that his semblance will injure those he cares about. plus ozpin sending him all over the place as the one member of team strq still active. it makes way more sense to think he lived alone, and visited when he had the chance. which is the main reason i'm WAY softer on him than on tai, 'cause qrow wasn't in a caretaker/parent role; at most he was an occasional babysitter. so while his incidents of turning up drunk on the doorstep contributed to the harm... it's like, it would absolutely have been better for them if qrow were sober, but that wouldn't have changed anything about their home life. they'd just have somewhat easier relationships with qrow.)
TO WRAP THIS BACK AROUND TO THE QUESTION, tai is unfairly judgmental and harsh with yang bc he projects his idea of her mom onto her; yang also has a better relationship with her mom's brother than she does with her dad. how do these two dynamics interact? how does yang feel about hearing from tai that she's too branwen, so to speak, while also getting along better with the branwen side of her family? how might that fuel her desire to find raven?
if her uncle treats her better than tai does, then... maybe her mom would too, if only yang could reach her?—obviously it's not rational, but like. i don't think five year old yang put her baby sister in a wagon and ran away to find her mom because she thought she would ask "why did you leave me?" and then get her answer and go home. as yang grew older and developed a more realistic perspective it shifted to "i just need to know why she left" and she projects that backward onto herself as a child, but at the time what she wanted, what she was looking for, was someone who would take care of them.

New set at the climbing gym today. The problems are new enough they don't have grades yet so me and partner are just throwing ourselves at whatever looks doable. There's this tallish slab problem with a HUGE muscly move up to the end hold but I'm looking at it like. Yeah, I can do it. Which, if I think I can do it with some practice, usually means it's no higher than a v4-v5 (intermediate range, for non climbers). Girl comes over to ask what grade we think it is, we tell her v4-ish. She can't do it either. Then her boyfriend comes over and flashes the problem with the BIGGEST, SHAKIEST power move accompanied by the loudest power yell I have ever heard. Then he hops down and goes "that's not a v4, that's at LEAST a v6 or v7 (start of advanced ranges), especially at this gym because their setting is so soft." And we were like, ok sure dude, but I'm still eyeing this problem like "...but I could do it though?" And granted I'm good at slab, but I'm not like. V6 good at slab.
Anyway, I looked that problem up on my gym's app when I got home and it's a... drumroll please... v3 (aka lower intermediate/tough beginner range).
Moral of the story: the confident power shouting white man at your climbing gym in fact does NOT know everything, even if he thinks he does, but hey, that might have actually felt like a v6 to him the same way it felt like a v4 to me. Similarly, my v3 might feel like a v5 to my partner, who is nine inches shorter than me, or vice versa, because she is much stronger. Grades are ONE PERSON'S thoughts on how hard something is -- almost always the setter. They don't reflect the varieties of skills, body types, and sheer motherfucking audacity you will encounter in a group of climbers. You're way better off listening to your body and taking advice from people with skill sets and body types like yours than letting your confidence be dictated by beta-spraying randos at the gym OR routesetters themselves.

VOCALOID RECOMMENDATIONS MASTER POST
I've been collecting all your vocaloid recommendations in one place, so everyone can take a listen!
And if like me you knew nothing about vocaloid before that nuclear discourse, maybe you'll find a hidden gem you wouldn't have found otherwise! <3
Submitted anonymously
Thought I'd add to the Vocaloid discourse by pointing out that several "irl" bands actually started out by using vocaloids. You can find a few who talk about it in the Hatsune Miku live concerts (super cool use of holo developed for those too!). That's really the crux of what sets vocaloid apart from much of the machine discourse; it's CREATED oppourtunities for small musicians instead of taking it away. Specifically by not just supplying a synthetic voice program to work with, but by tying a star identity to each voicebank that makes people more willing to explore obscure artist music. It also distincts the works made by the vb's from the artists who were paid to voice them, so you can't make them say things that sounds like you're putting bad takes in the original artist's mouth. Everyone knows and understands it's a fake version for the purpose of artistic creativity, not an attempt to steal the voice of the original singer.
Anyway since we're doing Vocaloid recommends now:
Giga - BRING IT ON (Inferiority superiority) ft. Kagamine Rin & Len
"Hop! Step! Instant Death! A Happiness Dance Death-Trap" and "The Path to Eternal Happiness...I Found It" both by Utata-P
Entomologists, Appetite of a people pleaser and Rotary Dial by GHOST
VIRAL ft. Meika Hime and Melancolia ft. GUMI by QueenPb
(note - Melancolia contains flashing images right from the start)
And last but not least, my personal Vocaloid feels song, TELL YOUR WORLD by kz, who sums up some of the beauty of the Vocaloid fandom pretty well
Submitted anonymously
Ok, I know the blog was kinda overflown of vocaloid discurse asks. So instead of discussing I brought RECOMMENDATIONS❗
Because, like, Defoko is pretty known in the Utau world, but she may be one of the worst examples of "human-like voice".
So to bring some counter examples of voicebanks that do not have much of a robotic vibe, I have here:
Some utuaus
【Namine Ritsu】-ERROR 2018ver.【UTAU Cover】
【Sukone Tei】Love Me, Love Me, Love Me (Music box ver.) 【UTAUカバー】
Some not so known vocaloids
[Aoki Lapis] Circus Monster [VOCALOID]
[Mayu] VOCALOID 3 ~Kodoku no Bannin~ Guard of Loneliness
【Galaco】 The Beast. 【Vocaloid3 Cover】
【MEIKA Mikoto】 Cantarella 【カバー】
And some slow songs, that require whisper-like tuning <3
【24 VOCALOIDS CHORUS】 Hirari, Hirari ひらり、ひらり 【HD】
Kamui Gakupo A Doll's Voice
Submitted by @indigo-flightly-falls
Oh!!!
If we're doing vocaloid recs, I'm here to suggest A Crow's Trial!
Vane - A Crow's Trial (ft. Dex & Gumi Eng.)【Vocaloid Original】
it's one of my favorites and has some Vibes. It's a bit hard to understand the story but the last verse lives in my head rent free :D

speaking about the vocaloid debate- they haven't submitted the playlist yet, but if they listened to English songs using Japanese/Chinese/other voicebanks then it'll inherently sound a little off. different languages and different voicebanks have different pronunciations needed for speech, and are thus recorded for the voicebank. use a Japanese voicebank for an English song and you won't get the right words pronounced right, or you'll get an accent, etc etc.
also some vocaloids only have one or two voicebanks and that's it. Big Al only has one (i might be wrong on that, but i know his is for V2 software), whereas Hatsune Miku has every single voicebank made over the years (V1-V5) and has versions made to sing in Japanese, Chinese, and English. she has so, so much more variety than other vocaloids and can be more fluent and clear compared to lesser known vocaloids.
and since we're sharing favorite vocaloid songs to convert the submitter, here's two of mine because i have too many favorites to share:
Carnivore - OrgansDotOrg
this one has Big Al as supporting vocals and it absolutely slaps, also OrgansDotOrg is my-all time favorite artist pleaseee go support them!!!
Seraphim on the Ring - Mitchie M
seriously, if you're looking for realistic vocaloid vocals then go listen to Mitchie-M!! Katio and Len just speaking in this one sound just like real people
Fools are attracted to anomaly - Utsu-P
vocaloid is not all pop and 'kawaii', vocaloid metal is some of my favorite to listen to
some other producers i also like:
tart
Ferry
Riproducer
PinocchioP
Kikuo
SweetSoSweet
KakyuuKei
KaitsukoP

really funny hearing the take about how vocaloids/voice synths can't have singing styles when there's multiple voice synths explicitly modelled after particular styles. prima (opera), sachiko (enka), and maiko hakaine (screamo metal) are just the ones i can list off the top of my head. and even if a voice synth isn't modelled after a singing style, they can still be tuned that way!
anyway, for song recommendations! gothic and loneliness is breathtaking (it's also a nightmare in project diva lol)
Gothic and Loneliness [Kagamine Rin] - Narushima Takashi

•jitterbug by hachiya nanashi - goes hard as hell and i adore the mv the song has
•lost and found by sasakure.uk - i only recently heard of it (idk how i only just found it) and it’s mesmerising i love it

Ah fuck it. Have a raven analysis which will probably become part of something bigger later. Hopefully this makes some sense cause this copied over from some dms on discord.
I think that why raven is seen as someone who does not care about yang is actually brilliant perspective work on CRWBY’s part. Even if that couldn’t be farther from the truth.
We mostly get just qrows and yang interacting with her for the big scenes there a lot of smaller but incredibly important stuff with cinder, vernal, Leo , and the few raven solo bits but that big windows that we have to raven are qrow and yang who the audience already likes.
Qrow clearly doesn’t understand his sister at all anymore (which is why he wasn’t who raven portaled to in the v10 flash back) raven often when talking to qrow is often not really just talking about him. Summer haunts the conversation in v4 yet is never dectetly mentioned. And qrow doesn’t pick up on any of the weirdness because she’s raven who left her daughter and her team betrayed everything that she, if you read between the lines with what tai said about her in v4, would have once done anything for. And because qrow dismisses her the audience does too.
With yang, who’s arguebly the most popular character in the show, people see her legitimate anger and raven abondoning her and as such that becomes part of the lense in which raven in viewed through v5. Which I’d argue is very intentional
She’s a character that has so much going on but your supposed to spend all your time angry at her instead of noticing what’s really going on with her. Which is literally pet of the image that raven has built up so she doesn’t have to deal with all her issues/feelings.
When yang finally meets her she doesn’t even care anymore about getting an explanation out of her. Her priority is to her family—her sister—and that ties into her dismissal of raven. Raven is actually the one who asks yang if she wants to know why she left in v5, not yang. And she never really actually gives one
She implies that it’s all because of oz’s shit but never explicitly says why she left. She also never actually thought that yang would stay with her and tribe. Because after yang and Weiss left through the portal just for a minute the mask drops.

Oh Great and Knowledgeable GoRogues, I have a question. A query. A wondering. I have a goal for the New Year - to read the /entirety/ of The Flash. Like, right from the beginning, right up 'til the new releases of now. In order. Do you think it is possible? :O
It's definitely possible, though it'd take a lot of time and you'd have to acquire/view the issues somehow, legally or otherwise. Another thing to consider is whether you just want to read the Flash series (plural), or include various tie-in issues and crossovers as well. Which is also doable, but complicates things a bit.
You'd want to start with Flash Comics #1-104 and All-Flash v1 #1-32 (Golden Age Jay Garrick). Flash Comics turned into The Flash v1 #105-350 (Silver Age Barry Allen). Then there's Flash v2 #0-230, as well as #1/2 (important for your interests, as it has Axel and James; it's set between #219 and #220) and #1,000,000 (less important, but has future Rogues), which is Wally West's series. Then there's Flash: The Fastest Man Alive #1-13 (Bart Allen's series). Then All-Flash v2 #1 (a one-shot about the aftermath of Bart's death). Then Flash v2 continues and goes from #231-247.** Next is Flash: Rebirth #1-6. Then there's Flash v3 #1-12 (Barry Allen, and the road to Flashpoint). Then Flash v4 #1-52 (the New 52). Then Flash v5 #1-88, which continues as Flash #750-800. And the current series is presumably Flash v6, which has had two issues thus far. Many of the series had annuals mixed in too.
Impulse went from #1-89, and takes place alongside Flash v2. There are currently series going on called Speed Force and Jay Garrick: The Flash, as you probably know.
And arguably you'd want to get at least some tie-ins, which might include Crisis on Infinite Earths (death of Barry Allen, Wally steps up), Flashpoint, Final Crisis (return of Barry Allen), Flash: Iron Heights, various Flash: Secret Files and Origins issues and Flash 80-Page Giants. And probably Blackest Night: Flash #1-3 and Rogues' Revenge #1-3.
An argument could be made for various JSA, Justice League, Teen Titans, and Young Justice series as well, but that'd turn into an impossible project at this stage, IMO. Same with Jenni Ognats' appearances in several Legion series. Best to save those for later, if you even want to go that far. As it is, I think you'd want to divide each series into chunks to make it less overwhelming, because I know this is a lot.
**if you want to make things easier, just read Flash v2 as a single block and don't bother breaking it up like DC did. I mentioned it because you're interested in reading stuff in order.

The scene with Raven opening the portal to let Yang & Weiss get to Mistral hits so different w/ the v9 Rosebird scene in mind.
"Or you can go back to Qrow and join Ozpin's impossible war against Salem...And meet the same fate as so many others."
Like no one can convince me her mind didn't flash to Summer in that moment. Brought up by watching someone reacting to v5 that just got to that part.

Shame we got that last post with Thorax and Phara a day late. That would have been the perfect Mother's Day post. ;2
Thank you kindly for the compliment. I really wanted to get that up on Mother's Day but ended up a day late, I know. I know I'm answering this a BIT late. I want to work on that and get to a more regular schedule of getting the Big Love out for folkes to enjoy.
Part n Parcel to the problem of being a traditional artist and all the outside responsibilities. To use a recent piece as an example; Hammering out a rough pencil only takes maybe ten or fifteen minutes. Like so-
Tumblr media
I do my sketching in the living room, some at my desk. mostly when I'm playing couch monster with my family. Getting to scan an image means heading to the PC in our bedroom and transferring that scan to a flash drive or my back-up hard-drive. Scanning takes a tick, colour correcting as IRL image gets digitized, cleaning up particles on the glass showing up in the image, tiny changes in tone that do NOT show up on the paper but the scanner decides are there...
Now, experience has taught me to scan at multiple stages. You never know when a piece of paper can get ruined, crinkled up, pen leaks, a well-meaning loved one spills their dinner, ONE STRAY CRUMB of greasy chips stains something, etc.
Tumblr media
Still, I take what I like as the image comes together, refine it with inks, usually standard Bic V5 pens or Sakura art pens for finer deetail. Add this, erase that and move on to whipping out the final stage weapons of choice, Kopic Markers, Strathmore colored pencils and whatever other hoobajoobs I've got on hand.
Tumblr media
At the end of the day, I love sharing the joy of the world I see with y'all, as told through the lens of fantasy, romance and little gay ponies. The Eternal Courtship stories I write and the art I do are as much an exercise in my relaxation as they are an expression of worldview- but above all else it's a world of love, love crossing boundaries of race, ethnicity and culture. Folkes growing beyond learned\indoctrinated black-n-white perception and seeing the beauty in the rainbow of ideas and emotions in the world around them- that's beautiful to me. It's sometimes difficult and it hurts, but that's the reality of growth.. That's life. That's love.
Thank y'all to all the folkes who enjoy the Big Love with me in this world. Stick around because there's WAY More to come!

opinions on venom interacting with rocket raccoon or groot? im not super into GoG, but i know they've probably interacted at some point in time. any headcanons for them? :D
Hiya, friend! You'll be pleased to know that Venom (host: Flash Thompson) and Rocket have interacted! Now, at the risk of alienating my friends who hated this run, I'm going to still point out a few of my favorite moments, because I did like a handful of the times they interacted. It was fun. Bendis didn't deserve Flash.
They actually met in the 2014 Free Comic Book Day issue of Guardians of the Galaxy, which is kind of odd to put a major change in a team lineup in a FCBD book, but... at least it was accessible?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beyond that... they teamed up for quite a while during Bendis' GotG run, from Guardians of the Galaxy (2013) #14-27, and then in the next volume (GotG 2015) #1-19. Now, don't go looking for Venom in every issue, because you won't find them. But I think they could bond over cool weapons and general bad-assery.
There was an interesting moment in GotG #19 when the symbiote actually bonded to Rocket, but it was brief, and largely so it could grab Drax later and pilot the ship to Klyntar.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Flash cares about his buddy. 🥺
They're also a little snarky with each other! It's fun though. They had a great team-up scene in GotG #27 that also is a neat showcase of Venom's new abilities.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overall they have a fun dynamic. It's a lot of them being a little short with each other but they fight together really well!
There is just one thing that they don't agree on... and that's how much to respect Spider-Man. But, to be fair, most people don't have as much respect for Spidey as Flash does.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(GotG v5 #14)
And they got one final fight together against Thanos in GotG #19! As well as a last goodbye...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, all that said... It's been told to me many times that Bendis' Guardians run is... hm... how to say it... not very good. But! I would love to familiarize myself with some other runs and maybe build some better HCs off of those. Bendis didn't exactly utilize Flash or Venom in the most interesting way, and unfortunately that means they didn't really get any well-developed, meaningful relationships with their teammates. But I would say that maybe more than any of the other Guardians, Flash and the Symbiote did seem to get along with Rocket really well!
I really enjoyed this delightfully specific ask and it was fun going back through the issues. If there's anything I really love, it's talking about Flash and his dynamics with other characters... so this was a real treat to me! Thanks! 💖

Let me be a petty bitch about something. (Yes I'm that self-aware)
Let's flash back to the v5 finale of RWBY. Yang comes back with the relic and has a line of dialog about Raven being gone without mentioning she was the spring maiden.
The fandom went apeshit. The hate posts were INSTANT. They called Yang a liar and withholding the truth that she didn't instantly tell everyone that Raven was the maiden. This core reason has been the "justification" for yang hate and slander for years. Because she didn't say something immediately. And yes, the hate started way before v6, so there's no "they don't show her saying anything after that."
Why do I bring this up now? Because Ruby now knows Summer left with Raven. Raven would have more information about where Summer went, and possibly how she came in contact with Salem and what happened to her, etc.
But Ruby didn't say anything. She was given the exact same amount of time Yang was given. She even had a moment to talk about what she saw, but didn't mention it. They even had the same group hug. But I haven't seen a single post about it in the last 2 hours.
Let me be clear. I don't want Ruby to get any hate. I love Ruby. I just want to point out the huge double standard and illogical hate that brewed.
Personally, I do think Yang told the group about Raven, but after v5, Raven's involvement wasn't worth mentioning on screen again. Just as I believe Ruby will tell the others what she saw, even if they don't animate that conversation for everyone to see. Because team RWBY is like that. They trust each other.

@cryptidblues tumblr Ate this ask for some reason so copying text from the email notif
See I’ve always thought that the mechanism through which cinder stole the maiden powers (bug) from Amber made her a Grimm hybrid. And THATS why Ruby’s silver eyes worked on her at the top of beacon tower; regardless of the presence of the wvyern. Because underneath her skin she was Grimm (and still fully human). “Your newfound strength brings with it a crippling weakness”/“You said the light only reacts to Grimm but…it reacted to Cinder”/“perhaps there was something that you just weren’t seeing?” Leading from that the implicit threat of “Oz can’t defeat [Salem]”/“but maybe someone else can?” to Salem is not that Salem could be eradicated by silver eyes (go poof like other Grimm) but rather be put back in The Tower by silver eyes. By being turned to stone. Still immortal but frozen. Trapped. Her Freedom completely sundered. “You thought there was no greater punishment we could bestow upon you?”/“Your light comes from his brother”/“The god of light…his eyes”. There’s an assumption that Salem is invulnerable, no personal skin in the game, “she’ll come back”, nothing effects her, nothing sticks; but her running this risk of being petrified by silver eyes gives depth and high stakes to any interaction she has with Ruby face to face (and her possible complex relationship to a hypothetical favorite silver eyed lieutenant). ᓚᘏᗢ
the reason i Don’t believe the grimm beetle made cinder vulnerable to the glare atop beacon tower is that ruby hits her with a second full-blown glare in atlas towards the end of v7 and—even though cinder by that point has a whole grimm arm—cinder flies away from that one unscathed. either:
a) the implication salem makes in v5 that cinder can learn to resist the glare is true,
b) there is an additional, unknown but more important factor besides “grimm” involved here, or
c) both.
i think the answer is probably both, although more b than a. (maria sees the flash coming from the god of light’s eyes and concludes this power came from him; but she couldn’t see that ruby’s eyes were silver until she saw their light go off, and she missed those two silver-eyed children of ozma’s. “maybe there’s something you’re not seeing” is true of her, too)
(the silver light evokes the pure white of the void between realms, where the dead travel from life to death and the souls of the living and the dead can meet in between. ozma passes through this liminal space every time he dies and reincarnates, and his children with a mortal woman have silver eyes. after ruby witnesses pyrrha’s death and her light erupts, the hand cinder used to kill pyrrha is destroyed and ruby spends months hearing echoes of pyrrha’s final words—which she wasn’t there to see—haunting her dreams. there are butterflies, classic symbols of reincarnation and in certain cultures historically identified as psychopomps, all over the scene where maria discusses her theory. maria is also philosophically wrong in her conception of creation/life as “enemies” of destruction; destruction feedslife and exists in balance with creation, and the glare itself is definitionally destructive. silver eyes have something to do with death.)
the kids at least, per nora and “maybe someone else can [destroy salem]?” do seem to be thinking in terms of ruby’s eyes being the silver bullet that can stop salem if not destroy her outright, and ruby has the wyvern example to look to to be thinking about trapping salem in stone forever. but then the leviathan is there to raise the possibility that petrification is not necessarily forever, and salem herself seems unconcerned when ruby’s eyes start to flash in ironwood’s office. plus again the implication salem makes that the glare can be resisted: if that is something she taught cinder to do, it’s something salem must be able to do too.
i do think the glare is probably capable of hurting her somehow—i have my own specific headcanons as to how for Fic Purposes but in terms of textual speculation, what happens if you take a grimm woman who can’t die and blast her with the grimm-killing light from the threshold between life and death? it sounds painful, if nothing else.
but if the leviathan could break free after being petrified, and salem is both immortal and human and thus able to, like cinder in v7, resist the glare in some way, i think being turned to stone or encased in stone is not likely to slow her down for very long. although i can’t imagine she would enjoy the experience.
the other factor to consider is that—well, quite a lot of the fandom assumes the point of silver eyes is to “purify” the grimm out of people, for example saving cinder from her grimm arm, and on the basis of maria’s theory that is an easy extrapolation to make; which is to say, after the experience in the ever after, i wouldn’t be surprised if the idea of “purge the grimm out of salem to make her herself again?” was broached on the heroes side. the reality though is that being grimm is not what’s wrong with salem and becoming grimm is something she chose, or at least accepted as a possible consequence of what she attempted to do when she jumped into the pool of grimm, and using silver eyes to try to Force Her to go backwards is probably not a good idea and not something that will work. she is change incarnate—that’s what destruction means.
so there is a thematic challenge here that might be explored; seen through the lens of maria’s theory, silver eyes are anti-change (preservation) and therefore anti-theme (destruction is part of life, not the enemy of life) so her theory is incomplete and the most obvious way to fill in the gaps and arrive at the whole truth is to test the glare against salem herself, because she is change.
and because rwby is so thematically driven i’d anticipate this happening concurrently with salem turning in a new direction, which intersects in very interesting ways with what is being set up vis-a-vis needing cinder to open the vaults vs wanting cinder to be alive, safe, and free. (i think the momentum there is toward salem being forced to choose between getting the crown and protecting cinder, and she’ll sacrifice the crown for cinder’s sake; the… possibility of silver eyes being involved in that scenario is obvious.)

Skywave Linux v5 is Now on Debian Sid!
Enjoy shortwave radio and overseas broadcasts, no matter where you are. Skywave Linux brings the signals to you. Broadcasting, amateur radio, maritime, and military signals are available at your fingertips.
Skywave Linux is a free and live computing environment you boot from a flash drive on your PC. Start it up, pick a radio server somewhere in the world, and tune in some stations.
Skywave Linux brings you the signals, whether or not you have a big outdoor antenna or can afford an expensive communications receiver. Hundreds and hundreds of volunteer operated radio servers are on the internet, which let you tune the airwaves and pick up broadcasts in excellent locations and on high performance equipment.
If you are into FT-8, PSK-31, JT-65, or other digimodes, you can decode the signals in Skywave Linux. It also has tools for decoding weather satellites, ACARS, and ADS-B signals.
Not only is Skywave Linux a prime system for software defined radio, but also for programming and coding. It has the Neovim editor and support for several programming languages: Python, Lua, Go, and Javascript. It is a great system for Web developers.
Debian Sid is now the base operating system which Skywave Linux builds upon. It is debloated, tuned, and tweaked for speed, so that you get the best possible computing performance. It works nicely on old laptops; it is super fast on a multi core, high spec PC.
For shortwave listening, weather satellite decoding, or airband monitoring, Skywave Linux is the system you want!
