"I'll Be Waiting"
Summary: “Her eyes are a soft color. A delicate green like the expensive jade bracelets all the heiresses of the Earth Kingdom wear. He loved the sound those bracelets made as they rattled against each other and jingled softly. He decided then that he liked her too.”
Notes: What do y'all think ? I kind of wanted to write some cute teenage LinZolt and write about dancing because of my own background. Also how would you feel, about smutty chapters later ? What direction should I take this happy ending or sad ending ? Also I want to flesh out Ember Island, and establish it as having it's own unique culture and dialect. How do we feel about some French-speaking LinZolt ? (translations will be provided of course).
Critiques: Do y'all have constructive criticism ? I'm still developing my sense of style and I have no writing experience and have never taken a creative writing course in my life so I need all the help I can get.

Chapter 1:
Kenzo or as his friends liked to call him “Zolt '' was new to Little Caldera. Frankly, he never imagined himself living in such a nice area. Solidly middle class, with the best schools and entertainment to be found in Republic City. Unlike the other boroughs every shop, residence and school there had electricity. Located just on the cusp of old cranefish town, and just outside of downtown, it was a short walk from Yue Bay. The harbor brought in all sorts of business. Little Caldera had a special character to it, its own unique appeal. Spotless and crime free but with great nightlife. High end restaurants and cheap seafood were both in abundance. Contradictory. Perfect. Well, nearly perfect but Caldera’s flaws didn’t touch the likes of Zolt.
Through some stroke of luck his mother managed to find a job as a dance instructor. The position came with lodging right above the studio. It was a small space but more luxurious than either of them had known previously. Two closet-sized bedrooms, a kitchen that was more of a hallway and an entry way that just barely managed to fit a genkan, coat closet and an armchair.
The apartment while small was by no stretch of the imagination shabby. It was well maintained despite its age. The walls were freshly painted and papered. The entryway in a rich cream, the kitchen was a sunny yellow, the bedrooms sported white and crimson wallpaper with a sun motif. They had real hardwood floors. The kitchen appliances were brand new, and for the first time in his life Zolt experienced the pleasure and convenience of an ice box.
They even had their own private bathroom, which was surprisingly large compared to the other rooms. The toilet portion was walled off from the bathing area and the sink stood in between the two. The bath was wonderfully deep, made to be soaked in. To his surprise, the first night he spent in the apartment and drew himself a bath the water heater actually worked. He had discovered this when he reflexively heated up the water with his bending and nearly boiled himself like a dumpling.  At his previous home the promise to repair the heater was never actually met. Over the years he had taught himself to warm the water, a skill he no longer needed here.
Every day he discovered a new luxury. The apartment even had underfloor heating, his need for slippers was gone. Despite the lessons going on at all hours of the day and night below them and their close proximity to their neighbors it was surprisingly quiet. The thick walls muffled the sound.
The views were perfect. The windows were large and spilled in bright wonderful light, only obstructed by the glorious shade of the Sakura trees planted all over his neighborhood. From the kitchen he could take in the view of the perfectly manicured street in front of the studio. His bedroom had an especially nice view. Behind the studio there was the nicest apartment building he had ever seen. It was built in a u-shape around a huge courtyard, complete with a fountain, pool, turtleduck pond, rose garden and a playground. It stood five stories tall and was built in a traditional style. The countless balconies were all decorated with paper lanterns and fire lilies. The fire escapes would actually be handy in case of emergency, unlike the rusted ones he knew. He had never seen the Imperial Palace of the fire lord, but he imagined it to look just like this, elegant and overflowing with flowers. It was his newfound vision of paradise.
The end of summer was fast approaching, but he still needed something to fill the last of the golden weeks with. He ends up brushing up on his dancing skills, not that he needed to, he was a natural. His mother had made sure of that. Before he could walk, he could dance. Since toddlerhood he had studied every type there was, from the Fire Nation to the Water Tribes. He was well versed in traditional and contemporary forms. His technique was precise, he was fluid, a master of the countless skills each genre demanded. The head of the studio quickly figures this out and offers him a deal. He signs on as a student teacher, requiring him to be at the studio at least twice a week. In exchange he receives free lessons, and they’ll cover his private school tuition. His mother is overjoyed at the thought of sending him to “Avatar Roku High School” -the best in the city. She squeals in delight when he takes the offer. His summer was very quickly filled with rehearsals, costume fittings, lessons and performances.
He’d taught groups before but this is his first time teaching a private lesson. For the life of him he couldn’t remember her name. What did Asuka say it was ? It had an “r” in it somewhere. The girl is staring at her form in the mirror, warming up. He assesses her. She is a sleek little thing, like a cat strutting through an alleyway at night. Her skirt is red and has a slit making it easier to see her motion. Her tiny top matches it and reveals her abdomen. Judging by her curvy build and outfit she must be from Ember Island like him.  She’s practicing her fa’arapu. Tui and La, she has the speed down. She’s nearly perfect. He can easily fix this.
He approaches her and introduces himself, he encourages her to continue warming up. After a while he comes up behind her. She stops, he places one hand on her stomach and the other on one of  her delicate shoulders. “You’ve got the motion, muscle control and the flexibility. You're just stiff and your posture is bad. You're tucking in your spine like this” he says demonstrating. “ and you’re hunching your shoulders, like you’re trying to make yourself smaller” he explains as he gently adjusts her position. There, now she’s perfect.  “Don’t do that, you’re a pretty girl. Have some confidence” he continued. He didn’t mean to say that last part out loud.
He looks up into the mirror, taking in her face for the first time. She really is a pretty girl. Her cheeks are flushed pink, she is biting her lip. It is a cute nervous habit, it makes her lips even redder.
He catches her gaze in the mirror.  Her eyes are a soft color. A delicate green like the expensive jade bracelets all the heiresses of the Earth Kingdom wear.  He loved the sound those bracelets made as they rattled against each other and jingled softly. He decided then that he liked her too.

“I love the idea of opening up a child’s imagination and challenging a child’s mind,” she says. “That’s always been something I’ve gravitated towards, and it makes the job even more fulfilling than just creating a beautiful visual.”
Abigail Nesbitt has been featured on Variety's Top 10 Animators To Watch of 2023 sponsored by Nickelodeon
Tumblr media
As the supervising director of Disney Junior’s “Pupstruction” — a pre-K animated series about a team of canine construction workers — Nesbitt sought inspiration from a plethora of real-world sources, learning about engineering, hydraulics, and industrial machinery to make the show’s tot-friendly world as tangible as possible. Fortunately, she didn’t have to go far. “Here in my apartment on 9th Street in Brooklyn, they’ve been building a subway immediately outside for the last three years,” she says. “So if I need to check out how a particular truck works, I just have to go outside.” With a decade-plus career as a storyboard artist for kids’ animation projects like “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and Sesame Street’s “Abby’s Flying Fairy School,” Nesbitt moved up into storyboard directing for Disney Junior toons “Goldie and Bear” and “T.O.T.S.” — the latter of which introduced her to “Pupstruction” creator Travis Braun. Though it sometimes doesn’t get the same respect as animation aimed at older kids and adults, working on preschool-targeted shows allows Nesbitt the opportunity to indulge her imagination while still grounding fantastical worlds in real-life mechanics that a child can comprehend. “I love the idea of opening up a child’s imagination and challenging a child’s mind,” she says. “That’s always been something I’ve gravitated towards, and it makes the job even more fulfilling than just creating a beautiful visual.” Taking on her first role as a supervising director, Nesbitt credits “Pupstruction’s” close-knit team with helping her make the transition seamlessly, and she hopes to use her position to extend the same sorts of opportunities to other budding female animators. “I hadn’t actually seen another woman in the position of some of the jobs I worked on. So I love the idea of mentoring and coaching and helping other female animators and artists, letting them know that there are so many opportunities and stories for them to tell as well.”
Abigail Nesbitt has a series of her own on development at Disney Junior Educational Resource Group for Disney Junior

Had a dream I flew to Czechoslovakia by plane (for some reason the airport was in a shopping mall, like just one of those side stores that had a plane gate) and arrived in a developing and bustling city that was trying to replicate the feeling of an older major city like Prague or Budapest or Paris, with those long continuous walls of apartments and shops running along the sides of cobbled streets, and these buildings were painted some kind of lighter coral color. And I was marveling at how the dimensions of the streets and placement of buildings made it so walkable and open and how it felt safe and easy to navigate. It felt like a good home despite being a newer city still under construction. And I walked into this big hotel with a gothic church facade and it turns out there were two or three classes of college students visiting from some ivy league school in America staying at the hotel, and they were all wearing sweater vests and blue blazer uniforms. And suddenly they all started walking out the hotel as a big streaming pack of students joking around and being loud but also orderly, and this trio of friends, two guys and a girl, they all had black curly hair and the guy and the girl were taller than me and the other guy shorter than me. They must've thought I was some lonely kid from the same school and so two of them hooked their arms around mine and took me with them. And we walked along the wide streets and they talked across me and wondered where my uniform was and we walked into another large coral-colored building which split the road down either side of it. I had arrived at a giant cafeteria hall and they literally dragged me into the bathroom and all gathered around the tiny white sink as I washed my hands before the meal (they didn't wash their hands) and they were joking around between themselves and having a good time and I never was able to get a word out the whole time but I was having fun if a bit overwhelmed. And as we then walked to an empty table I began to explain to them that I actually didn't belong here I woke up.

Construction in The Baltic Triangle. Lomo LC-A+.
The Baltic Triangle and Jamaica Street area is one of my favourite places to spend time in the city. Since creative businesses moved in and some rather cool coffee shops and bars became established this former warehouse district has become the place to be.
However this state of affairs has had its drawbacks. Developers are now building blocks of small and overpriced apartments. Experience has told many people in this city that noise complaints follow as the people who move into them object to the noise and disruption that made the area "cool" in the first place.

Thalman: ‘I Believe I'm the Best Person for the Job’
Tumblr media
He’s watched the sausage be made. He’s even tossed in a few ingredients of his own over the past eight years as the council representative for Ward 1 and while serving as the city’s vice mayor. And, as his campaign slogan exclaims, Chad Thalman wants to continue the comeback as the next mayor of Wheeling. He’s one of six candidates who wish to follow Glenn Elliott, a two-termer who’s now campaigning for the Democrat nomination for the U.S. Senate race in November, and he’s a firm believer he is the best candidate on the ballot. Since Thalman was elected in 2016 to represent Ward 1, he’s supported a number of paving and demolition contracts, the construction of the new fire headquarters and creation of the new police HQ, a number of projects related to parks and recreation, and he voted in favor of the purchase of the Ohio Valley Medical Center campus, the implementation of the User Fee, and has been a part of the development of the current streetscape project. “I don’t think I realized when I was preparing to run for city council back in 2015 how much time it takes to get projects moving and to make improvements we wanted to make,” said Thalman, who was appointed vice mayor eight years ago. “But we’ve accomplished a lot, and I’m proud of that fact. Thalman was sworn into office at West Virginia Independence Hall in downtown when he was re-elected in 2020. “I’ve been involved with the past eight years and I’m the guy best equipped to the city move forward. I think the current mayor and most of the members of council would agree that I’m the best person for the job,” he said. “I don’t want to be the mayor of any other city than Wheeling because it’s my hometown and it’s where I plan to live the rest of my life. If I don’t try to help Wheeling right now, I think I would regret it for the rest of my life.” The winner of the Friendly City’s 2024 mayoral election will inherit an under-construction downtown that has a number of vacant storefronts and buildings, an economy centered on the professional, service, and healthcare industries, and a shrinking population, but Wheeling also is a city poised for residential and commercial re-development from border to border following a $223 million rehabilitation of Interstate 70, more than 60 citywide demolitions, and the $32 million state-fund streetscape along Main and Markets streets. Plus, the trend of downtown living has grown with the completion of The Doris apartment complex by The Woda Group, and the schedules for entertainment at both the Capitol Theatre and Wesbanco Arena have been steadier than ever. “We have a lot of momentum right now because so much has moved forward, and that’s because the people in Wheeling have refused to quit making the city a better place,” Thalman said. “During my time on council, we have engaged and interacted with the public as much as possible so they could share with us their ideas and that’s been a great process.” Chad's parents, including his mother, Vicki, were thrilled when he dediced to move back home more than a decade ago. Happy Homecoming He was one of them. He grew up in Wheeling, went to college in 2000, and then found a job in a city pretty far away just like so many other high school grads have done since the 1970s. It took place so often, in fact, it became expected among members of a few generations and that’s why a city that topped out at 61,000 citizens in the 1940s is now the home of only 27,000. Thalman, however, became another kind of “them” when he decided to move home and pursue his social services career here instead of there. “I decided to come back to Wheeling in December of 2006 after a couple of years because I think living in Morgantown for four years for college and then in Maryland for another two years made me appreciate Wheeling even more than I did when I lived here,” he admitted. “I was working full-time with (the W.Va. Department of Health and Human Resources) and taking classes during the evenings at Wheeling Jesuit for my MBA. After that I started teaching business classes as an adjunct and kept working full-time. Wheeling's vice mayor has volunteered in local schools for several years. “But then I started working at Warwood Armature, and that’s a company that was started by my great grandfather back in 1927 out of his garage in Warwood,” Thalman explained. “We fix and sell electric motors, and I handle the sales, customer service, and a lot of the door-to-day operations of the business.” His professional transfer from the public to the private sector, Thalman firmly believes, allowed him to be a more effective city councilor. “It wasn’t until I started working with my father that I started looking at things with that business mindset, and I think it’s helped me with my role with the city. I can look at issues from the business perspective and that makes me want to know if there’s a good return on the investment,” Thalman said. “It’s all been a learning experience, and now I feel I’m ready to take our city into a very positive future. “The Doris Apartments is a great example of seeing a return on an investment made by the City of Wheeling because the City owned the parking lot where it was constructed,” he said. “Sure, we gave WODA the property but consider what the economic return will going to be when those apartments are full. It’s going to be much more significant than what an ugly surface parking lot gives us.” Thalman is proud of his work to add recreational opportunities in Wheeling, including the dog parks now in three areas of Wheeling. Moving with Momentum Gloria Delbrugge retired from serving on Wheeling’s council following her third term in 2016, and the late representative was known to be feisty and fiery when fighting for the Warwood, North Park, and Upper Glenwood neighborhoods. Thalman, thanks to Delbrugge’s tutorials, knew the residents – pronounced “voters” – would expect the same from him. “After I knew I was going to run for council, I started attending the meetings for about 15 months, and I also talked to Gloria, so I got a good sense of how things worked,” he recalled. “But when I started serving, there was still a pretty good learning curve, and it takes a little bit of time to get the experience the job needs. “There’s a lot more to how the City functions as far as what the council does, and what the city staff does. When it comes to city business, I think the typical resident assumes the elected officials are calling all the shots, and that’s not the case when it comes to day-to-day operations,” he explained. “That was a big part of the learning curve for me, even with all of the meetings I attended and all the talks I had with Gloria, I still had to realize about how the City really operates.” Even after learning the City of Wheeling’s “sausage” recipe and working with local, state, and federal officials over the last eight years, Thalman did not envision a campaign to become Wheeling’s next mayor. “In 2015, I made the decision to run for City Council, and I started preparing,” he said with a smile. “And here I am today doing something I never thought I would do during my lifetime. “And I believe I'm the best person for the job. I really love Wheeling, and I want to do everything I can do to help us all move forward,” Thalman insisted. “It has been an honor and a privilege to have the opportunity to serve the residents of the city of Wheeling, and I believe we have a lot of momentum right now and I’m the person who knows how to keep us moving forward.” Read the full article

I want to dismantle the blocky and claustrophobic infrastructure construct that America has adopted. In reality I’d like to run away from it all and go elsewhere where the preservation of nature is still a prevalent subject at the forefront of leaders’ minds. But I believe that is hard in any developed country. I want to destroy the problem at the root. I want to take my fists and crush all of these buildings and skyscrapers and reduce everything to rubble and force humans to face adversity, and help everyone rebuild our structures with more space and land for everyone to enjoy. I can’t even find a peaceful area with enough area to scream my lungs out without another person being inconvenienced by my expression and feeling the need to call the authorities. I live in an apartment where I share walls with 4 different families. I need land of my own to frolic in and plant a garden in. But I shouldn’t need to feel stuck in a certain profession to be able to obtain that kind of necessary space. I want to create spaces where community is important, recreational 24 hour spaces that are actually well-funded and well-kept. Similar to a group home but for everyone to enjoy. I can remember countless nights, and days, as a child, where I was yearning to be everywhere but the home I was supposed to be at. I would spend time with people who would spend their days smoking it away in their cars and in the streets. But I wasn’t old enough to, nor did I want to go to a nightclub to spend my time at. I wished there was a place where I could learn trades and crafts as a young teenager and adult. I felt so lost, and alone, and the connections between parents and children are only going to continue polarizing in two extremes- positive and the negative. The parents who stop negative cycles and the ones who repeat them. And everything in-between those two. Humans need to grow up with a sense of connection to this earth and the people in their community. Nature needs to be more available to access. Humans shouldn’t need cars to be able to go somewhere. This land is everyones land and we must be taught respect. Children need to grow up in nature, outside. With animals. Love needs to be taught and shown in school. Women and men shouldn’t have to hide and cover our bodies for modesty/Christian reasons. God made us perfectly. But there are a lot of people who use God to defend their evil. The road to Hell is paved with good intentions. But actions speak louder than words. A lot of people can point out issues in this country, but there are few if any that are willing to create radical change in this country. Young and old people balance each other . Female and male balance each other. We should be learning and taking ideas from both to establish change. Older people may think they are infinitely smarter than the young because of their longer life experience, but I find that with age comes more complacency. Youth are full of fire and have nowhere to go. Their ideas of change and opportunity are constantly shot down instead of being taken seriously. Opposite sexes constantly feel separated and so different from one another. Our roles are being shifted every single day. We could find a better equilibrium if we were exposed to a more naturalistic society. But males can learn strategies for inner passive strength from women. And women can learn strategies for outer action strength from men. The feminine and masculine is within us all. It is imperative we learn the importance and beauty of both within us. Oh how I long to live in a world where I can travel and live wherever I please, and not have to obtain a visa to be able to live on another part of the land where all of our ancestors have been. I am so tired. We should not have to work like slaves for the majority of our lives to barely survive and eat every day. Our happiness and wellness is not prioritized. The system feeds off of our exhaustion. Work us til we die. And we will try our best to have meaningful connections with others who are systematically separated from us in the meantime.

TOD: The Barriers, the Failures, and the Successes
Often Transit Oriented Development is opposed by the local community that already exists in the area where the transit is going to be or was just built. This can be for both valid and selfish reasons such as worrying that more residents will bring more traffic, more crime, and raise rents. Additionally, homeowners know that their homes will increase in value because of the transit line, and even more if no development is built because the demand rises but the supply doesn’t so therefore the price rises. People also worry that new development will “change the neighborhood’s character” which I’d argue will happen whether or not one tries to stop it, so instead of stopping the development, one should work to channel the development to bring the change they want or can tolerate. People use the term NIMBY to describe people who oppose development. NIMBY is an acronym for “Not in my Backyard.”
Sign against new development: https://twitter.com/nathanallebach/status/1631030670045659136?s=46&t=dtDnRh9ui5x2CNf8aafHKA
Tumblr media
NIMBY’s often can block development by trying to prevent the zoning code in the area from changing. In order to build a new pattern of development, the zoning code has to change in most of the United States, so if the local municipality decides not to change the zoning code for whatever reason, TOD won’t be able to be built.
Finally, construction is expensive, so private companies might decide to not develop in places even if the zoning code allows for it. To make the opportunity attractive to developers, the city must either increase the expected profit or decrease the cost of construction. To increase the expected profit, the city could increase the demand to live or work in the development by building services in the area to make it more attractive or it could make the transit better through operational improvements to make it more attractive to potential residents. Additionally, the city could allow the development to build denser or higher in order to allow them to have more apartments to sell or rent. In order to decrease the costs of construction, the city could subsidize the development or give the development tax abatements.
The Tide Light Rail line in Norfolk Virginia has very low ridership. In 2022, it had 620,000 riders. By comparison, the Cincinnati Streetcar had 850,000 riders. The line’s alignment was chosen to be constructed cheaply along a rail and highway right of way. Because of that decision, there are few people who actually live or work along most of the right of way giving the light rail line such little ridership. To remedy this, Norfolk could have built Transit Orientated Development along the line in order to boost its ridership and allow more people to access this important piece of transportation infrastructure. However, there is not a single piece of TOD along the whole line which is a real pity. They also haven’t made the stations easy to access from the current development in the area.

So how can we make good TOD?
What makes good TOD is the proximity to the transit station and the development around the transit station. Good regulation around the TOD is needed to encourage healthy development in the area. Discouraging the use of cars is very important so that there's enough room for people to live healthy lives, the easiest way to do this is to ban street parking in the surrounding areas and to end parking minimums and even add parking maximums to enable the most people to live close to the transit. Development around the transit should be mixed-use to increase business opportunities in the area. Ensuring everybody is within 15 minutes of walking time of most necessities and services is important to complete the TOD. Multiple transit options should be available just from the exit of the transit stop, having bike share for last-mile trips or local buses stopping right outside of the transit stop is extremely important to let people travel from the transit stop without a car. These factors help create good TOD developments.
The Rosslyn-Ballston Corridor southwest of Washington D.C. is a good example of TOD, stepping right outside of the D.C. metro station you're met with a calm street and rideshare bikes to help people get to their destinations and a bus stop for people that live a little farther away. The Rosslyn-Ballston Corridor also has dense mixed-use development near the stations creating a lot of housing near a subway that allows people to commute to D.C. and Arlington Virginia easily. There are also plenty of businesses in the surrounding area giving people places to spend money and get food without the need for a car or another bus ride. Bike lanes are on most of the main roads to give commuters and cyclists a safer way to get around. Parks and plazas are incorporated into the city to give people a place to have chance meetings and to meet strangers. Good TOD needs to have all of those and more to make it an attractive area to live in and the Rosslyn-Ballston Corridor does it quite well.

Module 4 Assignment
The name of the sculpture pictured above is called Al Filo. It is part of a large collection (23 sculptures) created by Columbian artist Edgardo Carmona in 2016. All of these iron sculptures can be located in Downtown Fort Myers. While reading about this collection I found the inspiration for creating these were to be part of a successful marketing campaign for a developer located in Miami. The developer's goal was to build two waterfront luxury apartments located on First Street. This of course never happened as it was a failed attempt. These pieces are yet to be replaced, despite public art consultant Tom Hall and council members recommendations for replacements of the artwork. The agreement they have seerned to come up with is simply to move it around to different locations all still located downtown. After diving deeper into my research, I had fould that the company Jaxie Construction attempted to pull out of the luxury towers on first street after accepting the failed project. When the artist accepted the failed attempt, he had been given the option to either find a buyer for all 23 sculptures or pay to return all of them to Colombia. This then caused the council members to take action and buy them for $55,000. This sculpture captures historical times when knife cutters were very common to find in restaurants. Nowadays it is uncommon to find these tools as it has been normalized to simply throw away dull cutlery. According to the artist this sculpture is a personal time capsule for the artist from when he was a child, as he claims to remember the growl of the stone wheel and sparks coming from it as sharpened knives and scissors. The artist shares in order to find another life size statue of a maker and or sharpener you would have to travel 3,300 miles away located in Frosolone, Italy. Not only does Frosolone have similar pieces, but an entire well-known museum, dedicated to scissor-making and knives.

So, I generally take cues from real life in my stories. Older roads in my area flood when it rains as they have no/very poor drains but the newer roads have drains and rarely flood. Does that mean when the old roads were built--they didn't plan for floods? Or might it something more like budget? Drainage technology? Or could it be due to change of climate? Why does this happen and what should I know to design roads for my story?
Tex: You’ve spotted a lot of the major factors involved in deciding where and how roads are built. Drains, while a very old concept (Wikipedia), can sometimes be disregarded due to budgetary concerns.
Climate is an interesting aspect, partially because our understanding of climate and how it impacts our infrastructure, has only grown over time due to a lot of research and funding being concentrated on it as politics dictate. The usage of a grid plan (Wikipedia) typically indicates a planned city, which contrasts organically-settled areas that usually follow trade and water routes.
A lot of your worldbuilding will depend on the source cultures and eras that you’re drawing from. For example, how the Iroquois League develop the land in what’s now known as New York in 1500 will differ from how the Dutch settled colonies in the 1600s, which will look entirely different to how a construction company will decide where to put new apartment buildings in the 2020s.
It’s still the exact same area, but the different time periods and whomever is the majority culture will dictate completely different perspectives on what’s important in terms of permanent vs temporary infrastructures. This can come across as polar opposites, which may seem contradictory outside the context of local history.
In terms of changing climate, that’s as much a function of history as it is technology. Yes, some old roads might flood, but some also might not, and that’s entirely dependent on contemporary meteorological patterns, anticipated changes, and how much effort was expended to effectively “future-proof” said roads.
A lot of that will invariably come down to politics, because that’s where the funds will typically come from - if it’s an important road to an area, in terms of high throughput in trade or politically important people/places, then more resources will be expended to make a sturdier road that will anticipate even unlikely scenarios, such as flooding in an area that typically doesn’t flood.
Drainage has more benefits than just flood mitigation, however - it also helps keep a road or street cleaner, by making it easier for debris to be washed away from the road. This can help reduce the amount of traffic accidents caused by mud or even snow, as well as any detritus that can be swept up by heavy rain, such as loose vegetation.
I think examining your sources and seeing their geographical context might help clear up how they approached settlements and development of their cities and towns, as well as the time periods you’ve selected for how they typically decided to allocate resources like finances and manpower. I’ll list some extra links that should be helpful, although admittedly some of them can be US-centric.

It’s Hard to Find a Good Lamp Donald Judd 1993
In the middle 1980s I wrote that in the middle 1960s someone asked me to design a coffee table. I thought that a work of mine which was essentially a rectangular volume with the upper surface recessed could be altered. This debased the work and produced a bad table, which I later threw away. The configuration and the scale of art cannot be transposed into furniture and architecture. The intent of art is different from that of the latter, which must be functional. If a chair or a building is not functional, if it appears to be only art, it is ridiculous. The art of a chair is not its resemblance to art, but is partly its reasonableness, usefulness, and scale as a chair. These are proportion, which is visible reasonableness. The art in art is partly the assertion of someone’s interest regardless of other considerations. A work of art exists as itself; a chair exists as a chair itself. And the idea of a chair isn’t a chair. Due to the inability of art to become furniture, I didn’t try again for several years. However, I’ve always been interested in architecture and continued to sketch ideas.
Of course if a person is at once making art and building furniture and architecture there will be similarities. The various interests in form will be consistent. If you like simple forms in art you will not make complicated ones in architecture. “Complicated,” incidentally, is the opposite of “simple,” not “complex,” which both may be. But the difference between art and architecture is fundamental. Furniture and architecture can only be approached as such. Art cannot be imposed upon them. If their nature is seriously considered the art will occur, even art close to art itself. The mistake I made with the table was to try to make something as unusual as I thought the work of art to be. Back of this was the assumption that a good chair was only a good chair, that a chair could only be improved or changed slightly, and that nothing new could be done without a great, strange effort. But the furniture slowly became new as I dealt easily with the reality. A good chair is a good chair. The particulars slowly created the general forms that could not be directly transferred. I can now make a chair or a building that is mine without trying to derive forms from my own works of art. After a few years I designed a pair of sinks for an old building that I bought in New York City and for which I’ve designed much subsequently. These were designed directly as sinks; they were not a conversion; I didn’t confuse them with art. The basin of the sink is an ellipse, which so far I’ve never used in art, instead of a circle, which I do use. I also designed a large table with chairs, somewhat like benches, to be made of folded one-eighth-inch stainless steel, brass, or copper. These were never made because the fourth floor of the building in which it was to be is very open, primarily two planes, floor and ceiling, while the table and chairs are very closed. The latter would ruin the space. I later made some bookshelves for the third floor.
I kept the building but moved to West Texas with my two children, where I rented a small house on the edge of town. The house was quartered into eleven-by-eleven-foot rooms. There was no furniture and none to be bought, either old, since the town had not shrunk or changed much since its beginning in 1883, or new, since the few stores sold only fake antiques or tubular kitchen furniture with plastic surfaces printed with inane geometric patterns and flowers. The two small children played and slept in one of the four rooms. In order to give them each an area of their own notwithstanding the one room, I designed a bed which was a closed platform of one-by-twelves with a central, free-standing wall, also of one-by-twelves. The bed was designed so that the lumberyard could cut the few different lengths to size and I could then nail them together in place. I liked the bed a great deal, and in fact the whole house, for which I made other furniture. Later, in a large place in town, I designed desks and chairs for the children using the same method of construction. More furniture developed from this beginning.
It’s impossible to go to the store and buy a chair. In North America since the “Mission” style became unfashionable in the 1920s and in England since the similar furniture derived from William Morris also became unfashionable, there has been no furniture which is pleasurable to look at, fairly available, and moderate in price. The only exception is the bentwood furniture developed by Thonet, which became less fashionable in the 1920s but has continued to be made until now by Thonet and others. This is still not expensive but it is not down the street in the store. The furniture designed in the 1920s by the well-known architects that continues to be made is expensive for most people, although not as expensive as the materials and the construction imply, and is hardly nearby to purchase. Neither is all of it agreeable. Mies van der Rohe’s is still the best and should not be considered as only a worn status symbol. As bad ideas should not be accepted because they are fashionable, good ideas should not be rejected because they are unfashionable. Conventions are not worth reacting to one way or another. Most of the other furniture in production, such as Breuer’s Wassily chair and Le Corbusier’s furniture, is an early civilized and almost forgivable sentimentalizing of the machine. The chairs of both architects are derived from the better camping and military chairs of the nineteenth century. Old good ideas made new and shiny are now a dismaying precedent. Sentimentalizing the machine is now a malignity of the century. This is present in most available furniture and in most buildings. It is extreme in Pompidou and Lloyd’s. In furniture this puerility is usually combined with the puerility of domesticity, the societal progress of the machine with personal progress in the society.
Almost all furniture made since the 1920s and much before in any of the “styles,” “modern” and “traditional,” has been junk for consumers. As I’ve written, the ornate and overstuffed furniture of the last half of the nineteenth century, crowded into corresponding rooms, was not supplanted by simple and functional modern furniture. Instead, this was turned into Victorian furniture, also crowded into matching rooms. Decoration isn’t just applied; a chair is decorated. Modern, progressive furniture has been corrupted into the opposite. Primarily, “traditional” furniture, Victorian furniture, continues. It’s ordinarily what’s in the store. This is what most people have to choose from, whether in Yellowknife or New York. As in politics, this furniture is not traditional and conservative but is an imitation of past furniture. The appearance of the past represents status by invoking a higher class in the past than the purchaser is in in the present. The imitation old furniture symbolizes up and the imitation modern symbolizes forward. Usually the first is in the home and the second is in the office, sometimes one or the other in both, and seldom the reverse. Good office furniture is also difficult to find. The bizarre and complicated “modern” office of the rich executive, who has photographs on his desk of his wife and children in their traditional setting, is a summation of the surrounding corporate headquarters. Since he or his wife is on the board of the museum, it must look progressive, like the headquarters, but with a touch of tradition, for her, for upward mobility to the past, for something better than business, such as learning, although there is nothing better, and, generally for the gentility of art, which symbolizes all of these. Then, also, he may be on the town council, or he builds shopping centers, or he builds apartment houses, giving the people what they want, to go with the furniture in which they had no choice. Upward and forward, and lower every year, not only in architecture and art, but economically and politically, since reality is equally absent. Anyway, what kind of a society is it when you can’t even buy a chair?
Architects, designers, businesspeople, even politicians, say that they are giving the people what they want. They are giving the people what they deserve, because of their negligence, but they are presumptuous to claim to know what they want. What they want is what they get. An exception to imposing upon the public what they want, or perhaps a rare good guess, is the design of Sony television sets and other equipment of some other Japanese companies and of some European companies. This has no relation to traditional Japanese architecture, which is fortunate, because if it did the new version of the old would be just as debased as it is in the United States. Department stores in Osaka are floor after floor of kitsch, as they are in New York. And always surprisingly, and always everywhere, new Japanese and Korean architecture show no fundamental lessons learned from their past architecture, the same as in Paris. In the United States the television machine began disguised and continues as at once the myth of the machine and the myth of the old home. The Americans gave the Americans what they wanted; they didn’t want it. Neither did anyone else. In addition to the success of Sony’s design, there is the smaller success of Braun, whose design must be the model, somewhat better, as earlier usually is, for Sony’s design. A few months ago there was a curious article in Lufthansa’s magazine justly praising Braun and its chief designer, Dieter Rams, praising “German” design of course, but explaining that “German” design was now second to “Italian” design (consumer products are not where nations differ in design) but that Germany would catch up. This means become worse. “Designer” Italian furniture is the world’s worst. The only things as bad are the plastic bottles for liquid soap. It is an exception and a possibility that you can go down the street and choose a TV and enjoy looking at it when it’s turned off. In Texas, when I made the first furniture, I wanted a television set. This wasn’t down the street, but almost so, twenty-five miles away. All the sets were American, all were made of plastic imitating wood, some like your Anglo grandmother’s sideboard, some like your Italian grandmother’s credenza, some like your Latino grandmother’s aparador. I chose an Anglo set by Zenith. Again as usual, the design and the technology were congruent. The color was that of the first colored comic strip, printed during an earthquake.
Most of the furniture that I have designed remains fairly expensive, because of its methods of construction, and it is not easily available. We have made a serious effort to lower the prices but the furniture is handmade, basically even the sheet-metal pieces made by Janssen, one by one. These would be cheaper made by hundreds but still there would be considerable handwork. The wooden furniture cannot change. Lower prices require great numbers, which require a large distribution. This usually leads to the department store. The distribution of furniture, and of books, probably of most things, are monopolies against diversity, which eliminate exceptions and complication, which have an invariable scheme for production and for costs, and of course for appearance, and, for books, subject matter. For both furniture and books the designer and the author absolutely receive very little. The production cost of furniture is not as fixed as the cost of the designer, but it is low. The cost of the designer must have developed from that of real modern furniture, since the architect was always dead. The producer, not the factory, and the retailer, or both as one, receive the most money, some as profit, some for the expenses of the distribution and the salesroom. This makes an impossible price. And of course it seems that the middleman should get less. The larger the distribution the more to the middleman. Therefore the best method is a small distribution, which is what we do. And, importantly, we are the producers, which combines that profit and my profit into one, leaving only the retailer as extra. Our furniture goes around the world, but only one by one. Most things could be made in the area in which they are consumed, eliminating the big distributor, often one company charging for three functions, instead of two for one as in our case, charging three times as the distributor, the producer, and the manufacturer, that is, profiting as corporations. Almost anything they can do anyone can do anywhere. And obviously even cars and TVs could be made by any large city or small country. I have always thought it strange that there are no cars built in Switzerland. I have heard that there was once a company. Why should Texas import cars and trucks from Michigan? The oligarchy of monopolies of distribution prevents innovation, invents only restrictions, and raises blank walls. The flat and boring society is a maze of blank walls just above eye level. This prevents new and real inventions, so obviously there is no chance for only a new chair or a little book. The purpose of big business is to maintain its oligarchy rather than to do anything else, for example, to fulfill two of its biggest claims, competition and innovation. Efficiency is another claim, part of progress, efficiency for profit, not necessarily for production, and not for the public. Only in the mythical “progress” is there a suggestion of benefiting society. Most businesspeople think that such slight altruism is part of their advertising. And “free enterprise” is a slogan of the Pentagon.
Noam Chomsky writes:
Free trade is fine for economics departments and newspaper editorials, but nobody in the corporate world or the government takes the doctrines seriously. The parts of the US economy that are able to compete internationally are primarily the state-subsidized ones: capital-intensive agriculture (agribusiness, as it’s called), high-tech industry, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, etc.
The same is true of other industrial societies. The US government has the public pay for research and development and provides, largely through the military, a state-guaranteed market for waste production. If something is marketable, the private sector takes it over. That system of public subsidy and private profit is what is called free enterprise.
My experience is that both furniture distribution and book distribution are impossible. On the other hand the art business is such a one-horse business that something larger seems better. But this is perhaps because the context for art is so weak. The only possible way, perhaps, to make cheap mass-produced furniture is to start with a construction cost and to design accordingly. At present we would have to debase the construction of the existing furniture for mass production. Beginning from a fixed construction cost still leaves the questions of too little to the designer and too much to the producer-organizer-wholesaler and to the retailer.
The roughly made pine furniture made by me and others in Texas was made first, with a few exceptions. So far this has not been made for sale. Next, well-made furniture in fine solid wood was made for my building in New York and then in small numbers to sell, as it still is. The wood and the craftsmanship make this the most expensive. In 1984 I designed some chairs, benches, a table, and some beds in sheet metal, which were painted one color to a piece. There were also a couple of chairs and a table made of copper. This was for myself but also was the first furniture to begin as furniture to sell. Since this was sheet metal and the construction is common, I thought it would be cheap enough to be used outdoors in public, but there is still too much handwork. Until then, except for the first pine chairs, all of the furniture was somewhat heavy. Five years ago I designed some light chairs and two tables in solid wood. These are simply but well made in Yorkshire. Similar ones were made recently for outdoors in galvanized steel and of granite, again heavy, and also in Texas in painted steel and of slate. A few years ago, first for use, then for sale, desks, tables, and a bench were made in Cologne of clear plywood. The sheets of plywood are cut as little as possible and are slipped together, interlocking, like a children’s toy, an old idea. These also, sometimes with the plywood coated commercially with a color, as well as chairs like those in pine, are made in New York.
I am often asked if the furniture is art, since almost ten years ago some artists made art that was also furniture. The furniture is furniture and is only art in that architecture, ceramics, textiles, and many things are art. We try to keep the furniture out of art galleries to avoid this confusion, which is far from my thinking. And also to avoid the consequent inflation of the price. I am often told that the furniture is not comfortable, and in that not functional. The source of the question is in the overstuffed bourgeois Victorian furniture, which, as I said, never ceased. The furniture is comfortable to me. Rather than making a chair to sleep in or a machine to live in, it is better to make a bed. A straight chair is best for eating or writing. The third position is standing.

Can you suggest some of your fav fanfic recommendations of untamed, from lwj's pov?
Thanks 💕
ANON!!!!!!!! Sure! So, what I have are AUs. I tried to limit this list to 13 and to my most recent read/bookmarked. Please mind the tags on each fic in case some themes make you uncomfortable.
1. Of all the hands - typefortydeductions - I love this! 5 years after the defeat of the Wens! And one of my favorite tropes of arranged Marriage. What would happen if WWX did not die and just continued to gain more power. This has some other people’s POV on it but mostly LWJ.
Five years after the end of the Sunshot Campaign, the Yiling Patriarch has only grown in strength. Desperate to avoid another war, the Emperor proposes that he marry his younger brother, Lan Wangji, hoping to consolidate his power and take the Stygian Tiger Seal for the throne. He doesn't realise that Lan Wangji has never stopped being in love with Wei Wuxian, or what this marriage will mean to them both.
2. This love is all for you - mdzsed - this is a very short and sweet one featuring bookshop owner LWJ! being as usual, with a huge crush on WWX.
Lan Zhan thinks of romance novels, of longing and finding love, and wonders if this is how he meets the love of his life: in a small town, in a bookstore, between bookshelves and hundreds of love stories.
3. A sorta fairytale with you - YilingJessa - I am weak for fairytale AUs and this is one of those. Also LWJ + bunnies is always a win for me. WWX as the mysterious witch and their pact w/each other was cool too.
A modern-day fairy tale, where Lan Wangji's new bunny might be more than he appears, and the witch in the woods has a happily ever after in mind
4. Crystalized - gusuvibes - Oh how I love this entire universe. This entire premise. I always like stories where LWJ is just quietly living his own life and thinking that everything is fine. He is okay on his own but then here comes the hurricane that is WWX and everything changes. Their interactions here are very sweet! How whipped WWX is for him is also a treat. Baker LWJ please!
nurse wwx runs into lwj's bakery one evening and then...just keeps coming back
5. Soil soaks our skin - YunmengLotus - rich LWJ going to meet WWX and his life takes a different turn. <3
Lan Wangji is the CEO of the Lan development corp, Lan Qiren sends him out to acquire the last bit of land on the outskirts of town so they can develop a mall. Wei Ying owns said land, a meager farm that he takes pride in and absolutely refuses to sell. Will Lan Wangji be able to seal the deal?
6. Cut through the clouds - phnelt - It’s the pilot LWJ x flight attendant WWX fic I never though I needed. A very caring LWJ always gets me!
Lan Zhan knows Wei Ying is trying to live off of plane food and the continental breakfast at the bland airport hotel and anything cheap he can scrounge -- vending machine chips, dollar pizza, street food if they're in a place where the water is safe to drink.
7. Found family - fyredancer - A younger WWX and LWJ against the world. LWJ literally taking WWX out of an abusive household because he loves and cares for him so much. Bonus badass LXC!
The Lan family routine is a series of ordered routines. One morning, Lan Xichen realizes their routine has been broken because Lan Wangji hasn’t risen after 5 a.m. When he checks on him, he discovers his brother’s school friend Wei Wuxian sleeping atop him. A Wei Wuxian who wasn’t there the night before.
8. Smother - PaPaYa_Bites - SMUT! That is all your honor.
Lan Zhan has a close encounter with his favorite wrestler and has a request.
9. An imperfect memory - xantissa - One of my all time favorites. This reads like a dark fairytale, one with the romance, blood, tears and a really good core story. I like stories that build up on a lore of it’s own. You are taken into LWJ’s POV and what he sees, only to find out later that everything is not as it seems. It’s a very rewarding read.
When a creature of darkness comes with a shocking offer, there’s really no question. Second Jade of Lan, in exchange for water for his people. Body and soul, in exchange for his clan's survival. He is prepared to die for them. He is not exactly prepared for what being a sacrifice means.
10. Crazy in love series - w_wxsparkles - wangxian D/s. this is my absolute guilty pleasure you have no idea! 🥲 LWJ here is an absolute dream!
A BDSM universe in which Lan Wangji seeks stress relief with his dominant, Wei Wuxian, and they fall in love because it's what they do best.
11. Read between the lines - wangjiluv - I like this trope! I would think LWJ can be a really good fanfic writer. The type that completes fic bingo challenges and always does the best smut. lol.
What do you do when the idol you wrote self-insert fanfiction about reads the aforementioned self-insert fanfiction during a live interview? Lan Zhan finds out.
12. Window shopping - thunderwear - OMG THEY WERE QUARANTINED! And bunnies as a plot device are very popular to me. I see it, I click.
Lan Wangji didn't look out across the other apartment building often, but now, as he scooped up his escaped rabbit, he looked over only to see a piece of paper taped to the window of the apartment across from him. It was written on purple construction paper in big block letters, like a child had written it. WHAT'S YOUR BUNNY'S NAME???
13. Pop and prejudice - flowerofgusu - This one has an interesting premise but still plays on the familiar theme of LWJ and WWX being old friends/rivals and then meeting again. seeing each other in a completely different light.
Popstar Wei Wuxian "Xianxian" and music critic podcaster Lan Wangji have a long-standing rivalry. Why, then, would Wei Wuxian suddenly agree to an interview with Lan Wangji, who so vehemently wrote that bad review of his debut album?
I hope you find something here that appeals to you Anon! Enjoy! 😊

P2 A Nice Catch
Part 1 here
(NOT A PROMPT)
Oooh, A Nice Catch was *chef's kiss*. Could you continue it? Maybe completely, not thinking straight, grief-stricken villain goes after Supervillain and the supervillain hurts him because the villain is very dangerous/angry and then maybe the Supervillain has to caretaker because they have a bleeding, sobbing villain at his feet.
Sorry if that seems bossy or specific, but i really loved the piece and my brain went haywire with all the possible endings. But do whatever you want to.
Not bossy at all <3
******
Flashing red lights on a Saturday. Supervillain sighed. The sound was probably the most obnoxious part of it all. No matter. Needs to be dealt with. Even his thoughts were gruff and tired. He would never admit it to anyone else but tracking down that little rat and weakening her was difficult. No wonder Villain struggled with her so much. Doesn’t explain how he developed feelings for someone so righteous though.
‘I don’t know what your life has entailed but there are other ways of healing. I can help you.’ Hero had said to him upon being captured.
Healing. Supervillain scoffed as he urged himself off the couch, turning the television off, and flipping off the lights, trying to make the quarters look vacant. There were various other electronics still on, but they were necessary for security- which was currently blaring.
I don’t need healing. I need power. Power to take down all those shitty, rich neighbourhoods. What good were they when so many people were left on the streets, starving, and begging for pocket change? The rich didn’t care, and for it they would perish. Villain used to agree.
Now, Villain was bent on a ‘The rich are a necessary part of the economy. Without them, there would be a middle class and the rest of the economy profits off the middle class,’ idea.
With a grumble, Supervillain left his lounging area, walking instead to the monitor room.
“Camera one, good. Camera two, fine. Cam three. Four. Five. Six. Then why the hell are the alarms going off?”
Not a single room revealed even a twitch of movement or a breeze to rattle lobby plants.
Ker-pshhh. The radio. The only other people working right now were part of the security faction. Meaning, Supervillain needed to respond, especially since the radio was going off. He grabbed the speaker off the side of the metal box and brought it to his mouth while holding the button. “What is it?” It no doubt had to do with the alarms.
“Sir? There’s been a breach in Building 2, third hall monitoring room. One body confirmed to be dead.”
“Any others?”
“No response from Radios 8 through 13. I’m in room Fourteen now…Sir? I think I’m next.”
Supervillain pinched his brow. “Have you gotten into contact with Buildings 3 and 4 yet?”
“No response from them. I’d gotten the alert from Radio 21 and sent it to Building 1 as soon as I got it. I don’t know who it is, Sir, but if they’ve made it as far as they have then I’m afraid-”
There was a crash on the other end of the radio before it cut out. Supervillain cursed under his breath before slamming a hand on the counter before him. He squeezed the button on the radio. “Whoever you are,” Supervillain growled into the speaker, “you’re dead.”
Silence.
Silence.
Silence.
Ker-pshhh.
“Oh, I’m very much alive,” a voice said. A voice which made Supervillain groan and slap his forehead with the blunt of his hand.
“Villain, what the hell are you doing?” His voice was more disappointed than anything and he released yet another groan. “Don’t tell me this is because of the rat.”
It didn’t take a second for Villain to respond. “She isn’t a rat.”
Isn’t. Oh boy, this was a case of grief, wasn’t it? “You didn’t dress her up and put her in your kitchen to eat breakfast with, did you?” Supervillain joked. “Probably had to spritz her with some of your cologne a few times, huh? Would smell like rotten meat otherwise.”
“You must want me to kill you. It’s why you tried to kill her, isn’t it? Isn’t it? You’re sick of living this sad and vengeful life, so you did the one thing that would piss me off enough to do this- to sabotage your own business.”
“Villain, old buddy, you’re in over your head.” A sigh. “I killed her, alright? She’s dead.” Supervillain refrained from calling Hero a rat for another time, seeing as it sent Villain over the edge. “And it was for your own good. You were becoming weak, and your business was falling because of it. Do you even realize how much fell apart all because you let her slither into your heart?”
“The old boxing pit on Third Street,” Supervillain explained, “underwent construction shortly before you were about to buy it. You know what was left at the scene- what the media didn’t cover? A mallet with Hero’s DNA on the handle. She smacked at the foundation, Villain, until it was bad enough to need repaired. What’d you go and do then? You bought a greenhouse instead- reported to your employees that it would benefit them because they wouldn’t need to go buy a lunch for themselves. She manipulated you, Villain, into someone you’re not.”
“She helped me become the best person I could be,” Villain gritted out, but his voice sounded with an echo. Supervillain paid it little mind.
“The rat changed your priorities.”
“They needed to be changed.” Supervillain squeezed his eyes shut, grimacing at the door slamming against a wall as Villain came crashing in. Well, that’s why I heard his voice twice. Once through a radio, and second through the door.
“That’s gonna cost you, but I tell you what.” Supervillain spun on a heel and told Villain, “You go in halfsies and I’ll let this whole thing slide.”
Nothing could have stopped the fist which Villain sent towards Supervillain, one nearly bone-crushing. One which sent Supervillain staggering back into his radio, pushing it up against the wall with a bang.
“I’m the one in the position to grant mercy, not you.” Villain began walking towards Supervillain as he regained himself but as Villain raised a fist, his old friend launched a hand of his own forward, grasping it tightly. In Villain’s shock, he lacked the response to pull away, and was instead pulled towards Supervillain while being turned, his back flush against Supervillain’s chest, his arm skewered behind his own back.
Of course, Villain fought against his old friend, wanting nothing other than to send another fast-flying fist in Supervillain’s face…or his groin.
“Villain. Villain, hey!” This made the more vengeful of the two cease his struggle. “Look, I know you’re mad, alright? You loved the ra- Hero, and you were blinded by that love, so much so that it clouded your judgement. It happens to the best of us, Villain.”
“You killed her.” Villain gave another jerk, this time with a tear in his eye. Realizing such raw emotion was leaking out, he corrected himself with a shout, “She was everything I had!”
Supervillain sighed, tightening his grip as Villain continued fighting him. “Yeah…you said that one before.” Supervillain let go, not waiting a moment before pushing Villain’s back, causing him to stumble forward, nearly passing through the door which he left open when he so rudely barged in. “Villain, listen to me, bud. You are better off without her. That love you felt was going to cause you to lose everything you worked so hard to build, and even if that weren’t the result, you would always have this internal conflict- to do-”
“To do the right or wrong thing?” Villain seethed, righting himself against the doorframe which Supervillain pushed him towards. “Supervillain, we’ve been doing wrong this whole time! Nothing we have done has been good by any moralistic means. We kill people.”
We kill people. Supervillain could almost laugh at the irony. “You killed at least one of my men today. One, which was confirmed out of twenty-eight. You’re just as bad as me.”
“Because you killed the one person in this world I could ever find myself loving.”
“You depended on her dammit! Don’t you see what I’m seeing? You don’t even know who you are without her coaxing her own ideas into your ear. You needed this. You needed her gone.”
“I needed her.” Villain’s voice finally broke like the day Hero was killed, when she was shoved through without remorse, discarded like a candy wrapper, and called a ‘rat’ without pause. “I needed her, and you stole her from me.”
Can’t bring her back, now, can I? But Supervillain didn’t say this, for he knew it was entirely pointless. Villain would just keep repeating those same few phrases, which Supervillain heard as, ‘I’m sad. You’re a monster and I can’t acknowledge myself as one. I miss my crutch and my ankle is always broken. Blah. Blah, blah. Blah, blah.’
“You need someone who you can rely on, who can rely on you just as easily, Villain.” Now onto the more sensitive topic once again. “I don’t remember you stepping forward to help Hero when she was shaking beneath my arm. You loved her, but not enough to sacrifice what we have here. We’re friends, Villain. We’ll always be friends. No one knows you as well as I and no one knows me as well as you.”
“Come sit down with me,” Supervillain finished. “In the lobby. I’ve got a few fridges, one with your name on it- literally. You stopped coming around, but I keep a stock of that weird soda you like.”
Supervillain was so casual, so friendly. It was as if he actually cared, had wanted to continue being friends, and had done everything he could to be friends. As much as him killing Hero hurt, as much as Villain wanted to hate him for it…it seemed as though Supervillain did it to help. Because Villain did rely on Hero, didn’t he? He looked to her for everything- even what food to buy. And the timing of the boxing pit was odd; what if Hero really did destroy it so that Villain would buy something else? Something that catered more to her own thoughts and reasoning than his own?
“I’ll sit down for one soda,” Villain said. “One.”
******
@digitalart-tw I considered being kind and bringing the Hero back. I really did. But the evil runs rampantly through my veins and knows no end.

hi, just wondering if you'd be willing to break down that quote you liked from biopolitics of disability? I felt like I understood the first half (ish) but I'm not really sure about the second.
Is the idea that research on disabled bodies is profitable, or that disabled people will become nondisabled and join the workforce, or is it arguing that like this research is done out of genuine care and concern for disabled people? I can't quite grasp it. obvs if you don't feel like answering I won't be a dick, just thought since your tags seemed enthusiastic you might have things you might wanna say about it.
absolutely, thank you for asking! it’s a somewhat dense quote that could easily be confusing if you don’t have familiarity with certain texts & concepts. i’ll just take it in sections, but i totally invite other commentary & insight! any emphasis is my own.
Rather than social pariahs, disabled people increasingly represent “research opportunities” in the sense that medical race sociologist Aihwa Ong means when she argues that “treating” ill and disabled Cambodian refugees in the United States increasingly “became the justification for state and local clinics to obtain much-needed funding from the federal government” (96).
historically, the goal of biomedical interventions in disability has been to eliminate non-normative bodies. the concept that all disabilities require medical intervention (often framed as an approach that is in opposition to creating an accessible society) is referred to as the medical model of disability. it argues that our bodies (i use the term broadly, inclusive of minds) need to be fixed and that eradicating disability is a good thing.
this quote expands on that prior scholarship and argues that biomedical research into disability exists not only to bring disabled bodies into the sphere of normalcy but also as a way for clinics to obtain funding—funding which only exists because of the government’s panic that people, especially immigrants, may become recipients of services like SSI and Medicaid due to disability.
Rather than a former era’s economic “burden,” disabled people have become objects of care in which enormous sectors of postcapitalist service economies are invested. In the terms of recent political economy, disability has been transformed into a target of neoliberal intervention strategies—a “hot” ticket item for potential research and policy funding schemes. Disabled people, once thrown out of the labor system on the basis of their lack of normative productivity in a competitive labor market, now find themselves “at hand for [the] purposes of accumulation at a later point in time.
to rephrase this in a very bitter and sarcastic way, disabled people used to be rejected from society because we aren’t as productive as abled people, but under neoliberal capitalism, we can be good little consumers just like everybody else! even initiatives that aim to increase disabled people’s autonomy and independence focus on us as consumers of disability-related services and our right to make financial decisions in a capitalist marketplace (link to a bit more on that here).
i’m not saying financial autonomy isn’t important—for many people, it’s the difference between life and death, and i’ll include a quote below with more perspective on that than i can provide. but under the current system, it results in corporations vying for disabled people’s money and watered-down activism arguing that businesses for which we are “objects of care” shouldn’t abuse us because then we won’t pay them.
in a broad political sense, it’s a reactionary rather than revolutionary mindset; sort of like how modern gay rights organizations in the US & other countries push for threatening politicians that they’ll lose the “gay vote” if they support a dangerous homophobic policy. it gives us a sort of power, but one that we only need because we’re living under a deeply broken system. but again, that’s not to say that financial independence isn’t vital for disabled people in the here and now, it just shouldn’t be the biggest we can dream. my goal for our people is liberation, not increased consumption.
“It is about time for revolution. We, people with disabilities, have to claim the decision making power and the financial means that are set aside by the taxpayer for disability policies. We have to gain control of our own lives, our own physical rehabilitation, our own personal assistance. We are the experts, we have to build up our own expertise and know-how. We don't need medical doctors, bureaucrats and social workers to decide what our needs are. We know what our needs are and how they can be fulfilled. We ask services that respond to our needs. We don't want to be the object, but the subject of these services.” —Huys Jos, “From Object of Care to Subject of Services,” Rethinking Care—From the Perspective of Disabled People (link to source pdf)
Put in the language of contemporary postmodern political theory, we might say that capitalism necessarily and always creates its own ‘other’” (Harvey, Neoliberalism 141). The historical production of others situates bodies in a position tantamount to un(der)explored geographies: they come to be recognized as formerly neglected sites now available for new opportunities of market extraction that fuels so much of the production end of neoliberal capitalism.
essentially, disabled bodies are Antarctica: left alone by the capitalist marketplace for a long time out of a vague fear and repulsion, but now everyone’s eying us, wondering what profit they can extract, and we aren’t protected nearly as much under global treaties. neoliberal capitalism demands constant expansion, constant profit growth, so instead of being rejected from the (literal and proverbial) marketplace, we’re catered to in a flimsy way that risks hiding the true state of discrimination we experience.
think of the recent erupting discussions around pride month merchandising and advertising; incredibly discriminatory, oppressive companies change their logos rainbow because they’ve realized lgbtq+ people are profitable. similarly, entire sectors of the market start salivating when you mention the US’s aging population because of all the assistive technology people will need. it’s not access as a human right, it’s access for a profit.
Such developments arrive, inevitably, with their own contradictions intact, but they also provide opportunities for rethinking disability as not only alternatively social, but also nonnormatively material, subject.
the social model of disability argues that disability is created by an inaccessible society; what is disabling is not, for example, someone’s paralysis which requires them to use a wheelchair but rather the fact that the apartment buildings in their area don’t have elevators, the streets don’t have curb cuts, and the stores don’t have automatic doors. this excerpt argues that not only is disability constructed through these social means, it also has a nonnormative materiality, in the sense of dialectical materialism; disabled people are uniquely affected by socioeconomic interactions in ways that affect the conditions of our lives.

Some can be more intelligent than others in a structured environment—in fact school has a selection bias as it flavors those quicker in such an environment, and like anything competitive, at the expense of performance outside it.
Although I was not yet familiar with gyms, my idea of knowledge was as follows. People who build their strength using these modern expensive gym machines can lift extremely large weights, show great numbers and develop impressive-looking muscles, but fail to lift a stone; they get completely hammered in a street fight by someone trained in more disorderly settings. Their strength is extremely domain-specific and their domain doesn't exist outside of ludic—extremely organized—constructs. In fact their strength, as with over-specialized athletes, is the result of a deformity.
I thought it was the same with people who were selected for trying to get high grades in a small number of subjects rather than follow their curiosity: try taking them slightly away from what they studied and watch their decomposition, loss of confidence, and denial. (Just like corporate executives are selected for their ability to put up with the boredom of meetings, many of these people were selected for their ability to concentrate on boring material.)
I've debated many economists who claim to specialize in risk and probability: when one takes them slightly outside their narrow focus, but within the discipline of probability, they fall apart, with the disconsolate face of a gym rat in front of a gangster hit man."
