THE DESCRIPTION OF SAINT JOHN PAUL II The Patron of Kraków and World Youth Day Feast Day: October 22
"There is no evil to be faced that Christ does not face with us. There is no enemy that Christ has not already conquered. There is no cross to bear that Christ has not already borne for us, and does not now bear with us." -from the Eucharistic Celebration Homily, October 1995
One of the greatest popes in the history of the Roman Catholic Church, and before he became known as John Paul the Great, he was born Karol Józef Wojtyła, on May 18, 1920 in Wadowice, Kraków Voivodeship, Poland.
When Karol was just eight years old, his happy family life was saddened by the early death of his parents, Karol Wojtyła, a non-commissioned officer of the Austro-Hungarian Army and captain of the Polish Armed Forces, and Emilia Kaczorowska, a schoolteacher who was of distant Lithuanian heritage, as he said: 'At twenty, I had already lost all the people I loved.'
His elder sister Olga had died before his birth, but he was close to his brother Edmund, nicknamed Mundek, who was 13 years his senior. Edmund's work as a physician eventually led to his death from scarlet fever, a loss that affected Wojtyła deeply.
Karol was an athletic youth, often played football as a goalkeeper, and also performed with various theatrical groups and worked as a playwright. During this time, his talent for language blossomed, and he learned as many as 15 languages including English and Esperanto. During the Nazi occupation of Poland, from 1940 to 1944, Karol worked in a limestone quarry and then in Solvay chemical factory.
In order to fulfill his vocation in October 1942 at the height of World War II, he entered the clandestine seminary of Kraków, run by Adam Stefan Sapieha, the archbishop of Kraków, and after finishing his studies at the seminary, he was ordained priest on All Saints' Day - November 1, 1946, a year after the war ended. He was first assigned in a small parish near Kraków, and then he served as professor and chaplain at the Catholic University of Lublin (now John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin). At a very young age, because of his exceptional talents, he became archbishop of Kraków and then Cardinal.
Following the death of John Paul I, ten days after the funeral, at the age of 58, Karol elected as pope on October 16, 1978, and chose the name John Paul II in honor of his predecessor. Having consecrated his papacy to the Blessed Virgin Mary, as his motto says: 'Totus Tuus', meaning 'I am all yours'.
He embarked in a tireless apostolate around the world. The Pilgrim Pope, as he was known, he visited 129 countries, and travelled more than all previous 263 Popes combined. Moreover, he is credited to be the spiritual inspiration behind the fall of Communism in 1991. While visiting Jerusalem in March 2000, John Paul became the first pope in history to visit and pray at the Western Wall. In September 2001, amid post-11 September concerns, he travelled to Kazakhstan, with an audience largely consisting of Muslims, and to Armenia, to participate in the celebration of 1,700 years of Armenian Christianity.
On May 13, 1981, the anniversary of the apparition of Our Lady of Fatima, he was shot and critically wounded by Mehmet Ali Ağca, an expert Turkish gunman who was a member of the militant fascist group Grey Wolves, and he miraculously survived the assassination attempt in St. Peter's Square. Ağca was caught and restrained by a nun and other bystanders until police arrived. He was sentenced to life imprisonment. Two days after Christmas in 1983, John Paul II visited Ağca in prison. John Paul II and Ağca spoke privately for about twenty minutes.
The pope made two trips to the Philippines: the first on February 18, 1981 where Lorenzo Ruiz is beatified in Manila, to which is the first beatification ceremony to be held outside the Vatican, and in January 15, 1995, during the X World Youth Day, he offered Mass to an estimated crowd of between five and seven million in Luneta Park in the Philippines, which was considered to be the largest single gathering in Christian history. And because of his special relationships with them, he is also known as the 'Pope of the Youth'.
As an extension of his successful work with youth as a young priest, John Paul II pioneered the international World Youth Days. He presided over nine of them: Rome, Buenos Aires, Santiago de Compostella, Częstochowa, Denver (in the state of Colorado), Manila, Paris, and Toronto. The total attendance at these signature events of the pontificate was in the tens of millions. The Great Jubilee of 2000 was a call to the church to become more aware and to embrace his missionary task for the work of evangelization.
During the final days of the pope's life, the lights were kept burning through the night where he lay in the Papal apartment on the top floor of the Apostolic Palace. Tens of thousands of people assembled and held vigil in St. Peter's Square and the surrounding streets for two days. Upon hearing of this, the dying pope was said to have stated: 'I have searched for you, and now you have come to me, and I thank you.'
After a long and painful sickness, John Paul II went home to the Lord, on a sorrowful Saturday, April 2, 2005 at the age of 84, at the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican. His final words were: 'Pozwólcie mi odejść do domu Ojca. (Allow me to depart to the house of the Father.)'
He was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI on May 1, 2011, and three years on April 27, 2014 on Divine Mercy Sunday, together with Pope John XXIII, he was canonized a saint by Pope Francis.

• W A R S A W • Masovian Voivodeship NOVEMBER 2021 POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews Museum of the History of Polish Jews by Lahdelma & Mahlamäki Architects 2 of 2 This museum has a deep, cavernous entrance hall that cuts right through the building. Located on the former site of the Second World War Warsaw Ghetto, the museum is used for a combination of research, education, exhibitions and culture relating to the Jewish heritage. The museum is also adjacent to the memorial commemorating the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of 1943, separated by a large paved square. A cavernous entrance hall is the central feature of the building, with its smooth sprayed-walls curving in bulbous shapes from the travertine floor to the ceiling. "To the best of our knowledge it is the biggest uniform, geometrically double-curving surface that has ever been realised," said architect Rainer Mahlamäki. "The design of the curved walls, which are bearing structures, was particularly challenging," he added. Perforated copper and silkscreen-printed glass panels printed with Latin and Hebrew text clad the exterior. Designed by Israeli artist Klementyna Jankiewicz, the text says "polin", which means "rest here" in Hebrew. Once inside one is transported into this cocoon of stellar architecture, surrounded by an impeccable exhibition very cleverly curated. Documents and artefacts, exhibits and memorabilias tell the story and the life of a nation within a nation. On 25 January 2005, long-term efforts of the Association of the Jewish Historical Institute of Poland finally bore fruit. On that day, on the initiative of then Mayor of Warsaw Lech Kaczyński, the Museum was formally established as a public-private partnership of the Association, the City of Warsaw, and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. #warsaw #polin #museum #heritage #history #testimonial #jew #jewish #jewishhistory #architecture #exposition (at Muzeum Historii Żydów Polskich POLIN) https://www.instagram.com/p/CXMi7uXMi7nZh5ohOH8OWXPYCk-ImoqKYHspJo0/?utm_medium=tumblr

20 years ago Poland introduced a new territorial division, limiting the number of voivodeships from 49 to 16.
stringer_bell_alive:
The Polish local government reforms adopted in 1998, which went into effect on 1 January 1999, created sixteen new voivodeships. These replaced the 49 former voivodeships that had existed from 1 July 1975, and bear greater resemblance (in territory but not in name) to the voivodeships that existed between 1950 and 1975.
Today's voivodeships are mostly named after historical and geographical regions, while those prior to 1998 generally took their names from the cities on which they were centered. The new units range in area from under 10,000 km2 (3,900 sq mi) (Opole Voivodeship) to over 35,000 km2 (14,000 sq mi) (Masovian Voivodeship), and in population from one million (Lubusz Voivodeship) to over five million (Masovian Voivodeship).
Administrative authority at the voivodeship level is shared between a government-appointed governor called a voivode (wojewoda), an elected assembly called a sejmik, and an executive board (zarząd województwa) chosen by that assembly, headed by a voivodeship marshal (marszałek województwa). Voivodeships are further divided into powiats (counties) and gminas (communes or municipalities): see Administrative divisions of Poland.

Shoutouts
16 Nov 1902 - Brooklyn toymaker Morris Michtom named the teddy bear after US President Teddy Roosevelt. It was named in honor of President Theodore Roosevelt, after he refused to shoot a bear during a Mississippi hunting trip in November 1902. During the trip, guides clubbed a bear and tied it to a tree then invited the president to shoot it; instead, Roosevelt, an avid outdoorsman and hunter, declined, saying it would be unsportsmanlike to kill a defenseless animal that way. - https://www.nps.gov/thrb/learn/historyculture/storyofteddybear.htm
18 Nov 1926 - Writer and playwright George Bernard Shaw refused to accept money from the Nobel Prize. Shaw initially wanted to refuse the Nobel Prize in general, in line with his principle of not receiving public recognition, but his wife convinced him to receive the award. - https://history.info/on-this-day/1926-why-did-george-bernard-shaw-refuse-the-money-from-the-nobel-prize/

History of Hurrem Sultan
Tumblr media
Hurrem Sultan, also known as Roxelana, was Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent's chief consort and wife. She rose to become one of Ottoman history's most important and influential women, as well as a popular and divisive figure during the Sultanate of Women.
Hurrem Sultan was born in Ruthenia, which was then part of the Polish Crown. She was born in the Ruthenian Voivodeship of the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland, in what is now Ukraine, specifically in the town of Rohatyn. Hurrem was apparently born to a man named Lisovsky, who was an Orthodox priest of Ruthenian descent, according to late 16th-century and early 17th-century sources. Ruthenian was her first language.
Hurrem was kidnapped by Crimean Tatars during a slave raid and taken to Istanbul, the Ottoman capital. Valide Hafsa Sultan chose Hurrem as a gift for her son, Suleiman, in Istanbul. Hurrem rose through the Ottoman harem's ranks to become the Haseki Sultan, which means “the favorite”. Like her title suggests, she joined the Imperial Harem and rose through the ranks to become Sultan Suleiman's favorite. He married Hurrem, making her his legitimate wife, breaking Ottoman custom since Sultans had traditionally only married foreign free noble ladies. Haseki Sultan is the first imperial consort to be given the title. Hurrem spent the remainder of her time at the Sultan's court, having six children with him, including the future Sultan, Selim II. Hurrem is also Murad III’s grandmother.
Hurrem rose to prominence in the Ottoman Empire, shaping Ottoman politics. She was involved in the affairs of the state through her husband. She most likely served as the Sultan's secretary, wrote diplomatic letters to King Sigismund II Augustus of Poland, and supported large public works projects such as the Haseki Sultan Complex and the Hurrem Sultan Bathhouse, which are one of the best spots in Istanbul.
Origins of Hurrem Sultan
Hurrem, from Persian Khorram, means "the cheerful one.” The name was given to her for her joyful spirit and playful disposition. Hurrem became a rival to Mahidevran in the Istanbul harem, and her power over the Sultan quickly became legendary. Hurrem was permitted to have several sons, which was a clear breach of the old imperial harem rule of "one concubine mother — one son," which was intended to avoid both the mother's control over the sultan and blood brother feuds for the throne. Suleiman allowed her to bear the majority of his children.
Hurrem Sultan’s popularity made her one of the most influential women in Ottoman and world history at the time. Her power as a consort was comparable to that of the Imperial Harem's most powerful woman, who was traditionally the Sultan's mother or valide sultan. As a result, she has become a divisive figure in Ottoman, accused of conspiring against and exploiting her political opponents.
Hurrem went on to become the first woman to spend her entire life in the Sultan's court. A sultan's consort was only supposed to stay in the harem until her son reached the age of majority, after which he would be sent away from the capital to rule a distant province, and his mother would accompany him. Sancak Beylii was the name given to this custom. Unless their sons succeeded to the throne, the consorts were not allowed to return to Istanbul. Hurrem defied tradition by remaining in the harem even after her sons were sent to rule the empire's far-flung provinces. She died peacefully in Istanbul in 1558 and was buried in the Suleymaniye Mosque.
Hurrem Sultan in Istanbul
Today, if you visit Istanbul, you can see Hurrem Sultan’s heritage everywhere around the city. You can visit Topkapi Palace, where Hurrem Sultan and Suleiman the Greatest lived together.
