Who felt romantic feelings first? Floyd cause Yoru is bad at feelings and just thinks any feelings are regular friendship ones, then 'i think i must be getting sick' ones.

Did either of them try to resist their feelings? Both! Floyd at first cause he doesn't want to get stabbed, and Yoru when she realizes cause she doesn't wanna get rejected.

If you had told one of them that the other would be their soulmate, what would they think? That whoever told them must be ready to die.

Who initiated the relationship, and how did it go? Floyd! He just kisses her out of the blue one day and they go from there. Works out pretty well (last words said before disaster eh?) But don't specifically say HEY WE ARE DATING.

oh god forgetting every anime ive ever watched

5. fullmetal alchemist brotherhood/2003 (very different shows ik but i can never decide which i like more). i really love the world presented in these shows, i love the themes of how human we all are at the end of the day. i love all the ways they play with science and real life alchemy, and all the interesting things that come from it... like how do you even come up with alphonse's entire ordeal? it's so unconventional and yet it's handled near perfectly and we get all the drama and situations that come from a boy being tied to a suit of armor.

4. death note. tbh i mostly agree with what everyone else says about the show, it's super engaging and it's fun to see the game of cat and mouse that L and Light play. both of them are super interesting characters and its fun trying to figure out their plans only to be thwarted. again, it's a non conventional idea, but death note embraces the fantasy aspects really well while being more focused on the corruption of light and him trying to keep himself from getting caught. sadly tho i do have to agree with a lot of people that the latter half of the show with nate isn't nearly as good. i like the stuff that happens like light's dad dying but i just kinda missed L the entire time

3. cowboy bebop. this is a show i might have to digest some more bc it does require more thinking, and i may have to rewatch it to fully appreciate it, but i really enjoyed it! space western is a genre i've never thought about, but it's a very natural combination and I think this show really captured that. I love it's main theme of living in the present, it's kind of unlike most shows i've seen. at first i didn't appreciate not having the backstory of most of the characters since they seemed so important to the episodes, but that's kind of the point. we don't NEED to know every little detail about their pasts. because the show is about the present and how they're coping in spite of their pasts. and it works because it's unfair how these people are still suffering for what happening in their past, even despite everything they've accomplished in the show. it's a very bittersweet show and i enjoyed it. also i love edward. baby

2. trigun (i havent finished it yet though). i can't say much abt the entire thing but i LOVE all of the characters a ton. i love vash himself the most, i love silly characters that are actually extremely genuine and tragic at their core. he's got one of the most compelling backstories i've seen so far and i'm excited to see how his arc concludes in the show. the other characters are also extremely good! i love meryl and milly a lot and how they're actually kind of more of a threat than vash, and how they have a vitriolic relationship with him but grow to genuinely care about him. wolfwood is also a good character to pair up with vash in a lot of episodes because he's got different ideals, and also the gun cross makes me laugh. idk i love the world and these characters and im excited to finish the show.

puella magi madoka magica. im aware that on its own, its probably not nearly as good as these other shows, but at this point the show means a lot to me. I've got a lot of good memories associated with it and its kinda helped me at a time i needed it. i love all five of the main characters a lot and each of the struggles they go through. it's another show where it's world is fully utilized in every way it needs to be for the story to work. i love all the psychological horror elements and how they're presented in an almost uncanny way. the art is beautiful and the witch labrynths are fully realized. this show is so good i can't emphasize enough how dear to me it is as this point

Kamen Rider Gotchard, Episode 2! It's felt like months since last I saw our boy. Man, I still can't believe this show is real, it's so goddamn cool. If I were a kid, I'd be losing my goddamn mind like three times as hard.

Spoilers, I guess...

-Houtarou-kun befriended the Chemy Hopper1, and with his help becomes Pretty Cure- I mean, Kamen Rider~!

-Fun fact about me, I used to be super into studying alchemy as a belief system, and it's all because of the ol' massive Gnoggin Pokémon conspiracy theory of a franchise reboot, which was basically just an excuse for them to unload every cool interpretation about certain Pokémon they could parse.

-...and in a weird way, that reboot ended up being true.

4. Does your OC have a failed friendship or relationship they still think about? What happened? Is it an unresolved regret or is there a chance for reconciliation?

So I had to sit on this one for a long while because I was trying to think about if Gwen had any because honestly, it's really only up until mid-ARR that she really starts building stuff outside of herself. She's not super interested in relationships or friendships initially, as she's more concerned about her work. Sure, her work does involve helping others - she starts off as a chirurgeon for a sort of medical underground in Gridania that helps out people the Conjurer's Guild refuses (like Ala Mhigans, or Seeker clans) - but she doesn't get attached for her own safety and the safety of her patients.

But in all honesty, there is something in there that I realized as I got thinking about her. Her family doesn't have an issue with the fact that she's a chirurgeon - they all are, to some degree, be it conjury or alchemy - and that's not the issue here. The issue is her grandfather, who is still alive.

Gwendoline's grandfather is a patriarch type that maintains the Lacroix name. Gwen's parents were a marriage of business, and he expects of her the same thing of her (which yeah gl, she's a demi-lesbian). I do write that Gridania isn't the most open? It's not as bad as Ishgard, but nowhere as good as Ala Mhigo or Limsa Lominsa, so Gwen is closeted with her family (save her mother, actually). She's 29 in ARR and still not engaged, which drives her grandfather fucking mad because she's an only child. In part this is because she is a daughter and the Lacroix name wouldn't carry on through her unless they got someone who was willing to join the family than the other way around, but also she's doing nothing to further the interests for the family. Again: not a problem that she's a chirurgeon, just a problem she's married to her work and not some lord.

The broken relationship comes in as she prioritizes her chirurgeon work and Warrior of Light work above that of the family. She used to visit her family more often during her adventures in ARR, but that peters off especially after Post Stormblood. That was a long gap of not seeing them and her coming back having helped the Ala Mhigans really pissed her grandfather off given the Autumn War.

But the worst of it was her doing, as a parallel to Surkie's story because yeah I'm being fun here.

The reason why Gwendoline cuts her grandfather off and devotes herself more to The Great Work in Thavnair than any further work with official Gridanian channels (she still does the under the table stuff tho), is because she was made aware that she had an uncle she was never introduced to - because that uncle was disowned. And for what horrific crime was he disowned for?

He married a Duskwight woman.

That's literally it. It's the bullshit Wildwood stuff that no one in her family told her about as that incident got her aunts and uncles significantly tighter knit so that disowning didn't sting as much.

And Gwendoline found out about this through talks with her mother, who told her that Seraphin was a spitting image of Gwen's disowned uncle's lover.

Because that's their kid.

Seraphin is Gwendoline's cousin. They don't realize this until they're in their 30s because Gwen's uncle was disowned and scratched from family records, while that same uncle has been dead for two decades now thanks to the Garlean occupation of Ala Mhigo - one of the victims of the Velodyna clan massacre, of which Seraphin was one of the few survivors at age 4 thanks to the Eldridge family. So while it's not the "oh god suddenly siblings" stuff that Surkie and Katsu have to reconcile, Gwen now has to reconcile that she spent the last few years driving a further wedge between those two sides of her family unknowingly since she and Seraphin did not get along at first, and that was entirely due to the fact that she is a noblewoman and he's the son of war refugees. It caused an ideological clash that took them years to work out. This information just makes it sting all that worse, and understandably so for Seraphin since. I dunno, her side of the family could have had a bit of empathy and thought to reach out, reconnect, and help? But no, the Velodyna clan is now nearly extinct thanks to the Garleans.

So when all of this comes to light, Gwendoline - a very loyal woman to family - refuses to engage with her grandfather. It causes issues with her parents; she's nearly cut out of the family, as well, but this is part of why she pours her focus into Thavnair to help Nidhana as a way of saying to them "You've lost me and I refuse to play a part in this any longer".

So unless her grandfather makes some substantial change, there will be no reconciliation. And hilariously? In that regard, it makes her a lot like her late uncle.

7. Any worldbuilding you’re particularly proud of?

That's an evil question and you know it ;D Well... let's see where I shall begin.

There is, of course, i am apart (everything is connected) - i put a lot of thought into the worldbuilding for that fic. The idea of the belief system of the person influencing their metaphysical connection to the universe and as such alchemy and alkahestry was something I created for this fic, even if it has since firmly morphed into a general headcanon. This fic is also doing some stuff politics-wise that I really like - some of it is more subtle, like the hints on how I imagine the Imperial Court System in Xing to function, and some of it is more overt: the real troubles of slowly changing a country and returning to peace after years and years of war.

I am also deeply proud of my worldbuilding in an undertaking of deconstruction - more commonly called the Eastern Liberation Front AU. Because in this I get to play around with background characters, their world views, and the workings of an anti-establishment movement. My POV character (mostly Ed) doesn't see the world in all it's complexities, but that doesn't mean they aren't there. If anything, this is something that allows me to explore Scar's backstory, Shou Tucker, and even Roy and Riza's relationship through a different lens - and with that comes a lot of worldbuilding and geopolitics :D

But I can also mix it up with a bit of DC! A Constellation of Complications is a cyberpunk space-noir case fic in which Dick Grayson, bar owner and spy, has to solve a series of cyborg murders. This fic was a lot of fun to create because it deals with the question "what is a human? what is a person? and what is a cyborg?" only to fundamentally decide: it is all arbitrary but the system is so broken, we have to act within it. The laws are unjust, society broken, and yet... our protagonists can't escape those definitions and secrets and consequences. Lots of fun with that worldbuilding for SURE!

17. What highly specific AU do you want to read or write even though you might be the only person to appreciate it?

-sobs in my pillow in sorrow-

I mean... the Eastern Liberation Front AU is right there. This AU is so large and detailed in my head... I could write a thousand fics about and it would still not be enough. Especially since the fandom doesn't seem to share my unadulterated joy about... Ed and Al as "terrorists" and enemies of the state.

But there is more! Of course! Roy and Riza reaching their goal and then having to deal with facing the consequences of their actions - in a way that respects the good they did since then, but really delves into the nitty-gritty of "some things are just unforgivable"... and that deals with how liking someone makes it hard for the people around them to acknowledge their faults and misgivings and that that's--- okay. This one is truly more a vibe AU than anything else...

Super specific and somewhat cringe.... The five sacrifices get teleported to 1915 Europe instead when Father tries to teleport them to his lair - and now they are in our world, in the middle of a war, without alchemy (Shamballa-style). BUT what makes this AU way weirder and funkier and niche... the Truth basically sent them there with a "once you manage to find a way how to stop father sucessfully, i'll get you back but I really don't want father to eat me so.... have fun" and now the five sacrifices are immortal... (or something similar enough) and stuck in a different time/world. And then... this somehow turned into a Marvel/FMAB crossover? As in Roy and the Elrics are involved in the Super Solider Program, but the Elrics leave because they don't actually want to help any government at all, and they then just travel the world, join universities, and make low scale trouble until in 2014 the Avengers notice a similar heat signature from some files in 1915 and search for them to figure out what the fuck is going on.

Is this specific enough? :D

37. Promote one of your own “deep cut” fics (an underrated one, or one that never got as much traction as you think it deserves!). What do you like about it?

Hm... to stay on the FMAB train... Hero Of The People, the second part of my Eastern Liberation Front AU. It's the Shou Tucker incident but in an alternate universe in which Ed and Al never joined the military. Instead, they end up at Shou Tucker's place after one of their informants tells them about his library - they have to be sneaky because Roy and Riza are hot on their tails after Ed almost killed Hawkeye during an alteration in a train, and Nina is a breath of fresh air (but we all know how that story ends).

I like it a lot because it plays around with Ed being a lot more angry and unrefined than he is in canon - and yet he and Al still want to save little girls and learn how to change the laws of the world. They are the same, and yet their different story changed them and the world around them. Also... Scar's there and that encounter does indeed go very different than it does in canon.

I don't know--- I just have an eternal soft spot for that story and the world it is set in.

post 705470921409019904 bc u have to PAY for monthlies u cant just earn them from gameplay. we need item that are easy to get yet also go up in value over time. every other game i play has these thing as a reward for long term & consistent players!

if the ONLY shit that retains value is premium/paid content then of course the economies fucked bc the only ppl who can make longterm value investment are those who are already well off. limited/retiring item earned from special prizes, chance event, quests, & gaemplay are essential for allowing ftp players to still get itmes that appreciate in value & be able to keep on par with premium paying users (bc then even if they dont spend money they can still have item that ppl will want).

part of dvs economy being so shit is bc u cannot "play the market" much the way u mgiht some other games. literally nearly every item is either 1. completely worthless junk that will return every year & already exists in abundance OR 2. its paid premium shit that only gets traded for other paid premium shit. rarely are there any "mid tiere value" items in between that can be leveraged by folk in the middle.

i think in retaliation to customs & monthies seeming too inacessible we went so far in the other direction that now all other items is TOO acessible which only makes the problem worse (if the ONLY valuable items are super hard to get or paid, then its impossible for ppl who dont have acess to those to "work their way up". if this was balanced by having more free/cheap to get yet also valuable items, then custom & monthlies would actually become MORE acessible to the avg player bc they could get their hands on non-monthly non-custom items that still genuinely have value & could be traded for higher value thing.)

limited item does not always = bad & exclusionary. it can be a part of healthy economy & even a way to help limit exclusivity by giving ftp players economic mobility just for actually playing the game.

i think when ppl talk abt wanting more limited items they mean stuf like this. not more monthiles. but shit that can serve as ACTUAL reward for gameplay. right now participating in event, story quests, & even getting random chance pop up are all boring/un exciting bc once u have one set of the item thats all u ever need, theyre all worthless, retain no value, & nothing feels like an actual sruprise or a reward. theres no incentive to participate bc everything is easy & already handed to u.

dv userbase seems to be such weird mix... ppl who want to own every single item in the game with no effort & no exclusiveity but then also complain abt there being nothing to do, no long term gameplay goals, event reward feel lacking, & how boring it is between content drops. but usually part of the motivation/goals & participation feeling worthwhile on other games is BC u have to work a lil to collect things. exctiement of earning prize that gain in value, making sure ur present to collect event rewards bc the ones will be diffrent next year, new itme u strategize to trade for. & when u lack all of that ofc its gonna feel more boring.

tho obv thats not main issue with the site & im not sayin anyone is wrong for feeling that way i thinkit can def be hard to strike balance between "enough exclusivity to feel fun & motivating" vs "so much that it just feel unfair" but my point is just that right now we really need some "mid tier" limited items (that ARENT locked behing million potatoes worth of item alchemy lmfao) to balance the market & put free player on equal footing in the economy. stuff that appreciates in value & makes rewards actually feel special/worthwhile bc one day u can trade/sell it for something cooler! yk?

idk as a ftp player myself to me at least that would help playing dv actualy feel worht it.

YEAH in this au marcias like that is my baby brother no I've never actually been able to physically touch him yes he is from medieval times. I don't see what this has to do with anything. She'd be so offended that any version of herself could ever be mean to him. They r besties who tell each other everything (or. Marcia tells Most things but she does see marcellus very much as a child bc he. Is. She's like 20 when he's maybe 10 so she doesn't tell him Everything but they're super close) and when he ends up in the future she introduces him to everyone as her little cousin from overseas who's parents r dead so he's staying with her. She does tell alther who he actually is tho bc alther figured out where she was disappearing to not long after the start of her apprenticeship and asked her abt it and she didn't want to lie to him,,, she didn't tell him Who she was talking to just that it was a friend and she wasn't at any risk of going through the glass.

And. Yeah <33 they r autistic. Together 😌😌 marcellus knows some basic magyk in this au and marcia knows some physik and a lot of the theory of alchemy. Also I should clarify marcellus stays in the future in this au. He never goes home ever he just lives in the future now,, things in the past play out mostly the same as in canon but marcellus's role is played by a different alchemist who isn't such close friends with julius so there's some suspicion that the alchemy disaster wasn't entirely the alchemists fault and that's why alchemy isn't Quite so hated in the future.

Marcellus being more argumentative!! I think in canon he would have stayed quiet just bc. He wouldn't have seen a way out. Like etheldredda is essentially unkillable and if he ever dares to act out what happened to his sisters could happen to him. But with marcias influence he kind of starts pushing boundaries and asking questions and sneaking around and stealing things because marcias optimism rubs off on him and he's sure that he'll be able to save his sister this time, definitely. If things get really bad he can run away with the money from stolen items. I have a lot of thoughts abt marcellus and etheldredda and maybe one day I'll even elaborate on them abdjdbdjbd

AND. YEAH marcia does get affected by marcellus also <3 ur right she is a lot more tolerant of ppl in general tbh like especially after marcellus is in the future. If she can handle a grieving 13 yr old she can handle anything. She's also a lot more polite?? Like marcellus was taught Court Rules since he was tiny and started teaching them to marcia just for fun and obviously most of them r incredibly outdated but the same principles apply so while she is still bitchy and rude she is bitchy and rude in such a way that no one can ever call her out on it. Most of the time. Sometimes she snaps <3 Maybe she comes across a little old fashioned sometimes but that only adds to the effect,, she has learned Social Skill and by god is she going to use it.

There's also the fact that she considers marcellus her brother + has decided to honour his older bio sister by doing her absolute best to take care of him. When he's in the past this is 100% just talking with him and trying to give advice and steer him away from trouble (she fails miserably on that) and when he's in the future she's a lot more involved,, unfortunately (for her) this means she has a Big Sister Mode that activates every time she sees someone younger than her having a bad time and she HATES it bc all the castle kids literally love her and r bugging her all the time. Anyway I do have more to say but maybe I'll make an actual post with a readmore instead of putting it in ur inbox abdjdnsjfn

I love this au, it's so cute to see marcellus being looked after for once lmao

I wanna see the grown up pair of them start working together on alchemy and magyk too, kinda like julius but without the whole blame and betrayal bit. Alchemy being suspicious but not outright banned is fun too, would it end up being treated kinda like witches are (though with the bonus of hopefully less kidnapping involved)? Or more accepted than that

Marcellus having marcias influence and a way out is v interesting, in the canon it does seem like his only way out is to outlast etheldredda so he puts so much effort into a tincture that actually works. But if he's out would he put so much time and effort into it? Or just let it be and get on with a normal length life this time?

I love Social Skill marcia, she's such a person to learn the rules to break the rules (or bend the rules to breaking point without actually breaking them, leaving room for plausible deniability). I can also see them researching Why different rules and etiquette exist just so they understand why people do what they do, even if it's old stuff that's not really relevant anymore

Does marcellus get a chance to grieve his sisters in the past? Not even as in a funeral or something, but did he just have to pretend it's all fine until he got out?

Okay I know I'm sending these in all different rlly long asks which is probably a little annoying. HOWEVER. Sep and marcellus don't even rlly need to scheme bc a) marcias way less stubborn in this au than she is in canon. Like she's still super stubborn but if marcellus specifically brings an idea to her then she will genuinely consider it and also b) despite being 10 years younger than her, marcellus is Super strong from carrying around loads of gold all the time (and marcia. Lost a lot of weight in dn1) so whenever marcias. Neglecting her basic needs like food or sleep he can just pick her up and carry her to wherever she needs to be abdjfbfnfn. He doesn't do it in public tho he has Some respect for her dignity <3 also yeah their rooms r just. Full of random magyk/alchemy stuff like maybe marcellus has more alchemy when marcia has more magyk but honestly they use each others rooms to store stuff just as much as they use their own so it's all kind of mixed in.

AND YEAH UR SO RIGHT I have been making designs for them (+esmerelda) and I'm having a lot of fun I've given Marcia the curly toes. I think marcellus gets red python skin. I've got a baby marcellus design done and coloured that I put like. The smidgiest bit of effort (<-read:1 google search) into making period accurate as well as I could. But older marcellus is free game bc who knows what they dress like in the modern day castle it all seems a bit mad tbh

And. Yeah <33 septimus is having a better time in this au than in canon. Not that he was having a Bad time in canon especially (besides the horrors) but marcia in this au has some idea what she's doing (<-did frantic research on how to help traumatised kids when she first met marcellus) and marcellus also knows what he would've wanted to happen when he was in the same situation. So it's just. Nice?? Idk. Marcia has done this before and she knows at least some of the mistakes not to make again basically. Septimus is just happy and also kind of overwhelmed to have so many ppl care abt him

no it's ok lol, it helps me stop my brain from running too fast in too many directions

i meant more as in septimus wants a pet lizard or smth and they just trick her into thinking it was her idea lmao. but also it's So Nice to realize that in this au marcia has someone who's actually capable of making her take care of herself. in canon lots of people tried but they just didn't have the ability to actually Make Her. i feel like in thm the reason why she's doing pretty well and looking after herself is because she sort of had to after sep became eow and she was left to sort herself out.

marcia and marcellus absolutely do matching sibling outfits. they probably make sep join them <3 (the shoe guy terry or smth hates this whole family)

hi kata!!! oooh so fun abt the black opium!!! such a classic 🖤 and yayyy i'm always in a mood to chat abt fragrances !!! these r such fun questions ....

i definitely have some fave newer fragrances! ive been obsessed w thin wild mercury for the past bit- such a lovely indie LA perfumery. my personal faves are laurel canyon 1966 + whisky 1969. i got a sample pack of all their fragrances and rlly want to get full sizes of those two... haven't been able to stop wearing them. laurel canyon is so magical and it reminds me of all the time i spent up there too <33 but it doesn't have a great staying power :( whisky stays much longer but def has a different, more animalistic vibe. i'm planning on trying to write reviews for them so i'll go in more def then! but also that might be a while bc if i decide to get full sizes ill wait until i get them + they come to take pics w.

the bottles r so darling also! above are the bottles + notes for the two i love. i'm also so obsessed w them bc they r all love letters to los angeles 💞💞🖤 excuse the graphic also i had to edit these to make the 10 image limit..

and ooh! okay winter perfumes.... a basic but rlly lovely one i'd say is replica by the fireplace. it's a smoky vanilla, rlly yummy. rn there's a sephora favorites scent collection w that in the mix and getting that set which comes w a voucher for one of the full size ones saves like. 6 dollars for the full size (not 3.4oz tho) so i got that set to prob redeem for her! it also includes my way which i think i remember u saying u got ! okay i got off topic . winter.

i love woody scents all the time but esp around winter, cocoa woods by nest is a nice sandalwood! super cedar by byredo is another great woody scent. and also obv black opium for a decadent scent..

and for indie scents... yorick by black phoenix alchemy labs (bpal) is sour and woodsy and Amazing. it has decaying note to it which reminds me of nature dying in winter. i also think rose is super chic in winter! something about the imagery of a single red rose in the middle of the snow... if u get my gist. london from bpal is my fave rose perfume!

i think my most controversial opinion w regards to fragrance is i am not super crazy about florals anymore. i did love them when i was younger but now ive moved on and i do wish that the more mainstream and luxury brands would be a bit more bold and adventurous- but that is where the beauty of indie perfumes come! thank you for the questions lover!!! these were so fun to answer 🖤🖤🖤

do you have any recommendations for someone who’s new to flight rising?

Hmmmm let’s see

- Make your own fun! I find that a lotta people lose interest in FR because it’s just a pet sim so find something niche that you’ll enjoy like writing, art, collecting only yellow dragons with purple terts, making fan dragons, etc. I don’t participate much in FR other than character creation and lore so that’s my shtick.

- Money! If you have trouble with making currency, there’s quite a few ways to make treasure - that being like selling hatchlings, baldwin/coli mats, the fairgrounds, or offering a service (a lil advanced tbh if you’re just starting out tho). Don’t be discouraged by the prices of things, you’ll slowly make your way to earning that gold. Frankly there’s nothing wrong with scooting along buying cheap and setting goals as well.

- Take advantage of the free shit you get! Don’t be me and ignore daily gathering/stuff in the trading post. You can get some good stuff from there like food, items, coli crap, etc. Do some alchemy to start building a supply of materials for use or sale.

- Auction house is your friend! I always check there to see if what I want is cheaper than the market plus it’s a good way to price check your own sales to see how you wanna price em.

- Don’t be afraid to google some guides! There’s a lot of stuff I don’t understand about FR like how to coli or how to play some of the fairgrounds games so I always hit up helpful stuff made by other players. There’s nothing insanely complicated about the site but having a lil help doesn’t hurt.

- Check out the lore in the encyclopedia tab! It’s not necessarily for everyone but you never know what might spark your interest there.

If anyone else has helpful tips, pls feel free to add onto this! I play FR kinda like, very super casually and by that I mean I show up, throw hotpockets at my dragons and then leave to distantly muse about my next project

First of all, I'm sorry this took me SO long to answer. I want to say I've been busy but it's just been general [waves hand vaguely] life.

ANYWAY thank you for asking! I actually don't read scary stuff a lot b/c I'm a wimp, but I have a few spooky/autumnal books up my sleeves! Let's see what we've got!!

1) The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters

Let me just start by saying that Sarah Waters is one of my absolute favorite authors ever! All her novels are suspenseful, twisty historical novels with great female and queer characters. Although, fair warning, actually The Little Stranger is like her one novel that isn't queer, but it is VERY good. If you read The Little Stranger and like it, please read Fingersmith and/or The Paying Guests.

The Little Stranger is set in the countryside of post-WWII England and follows a mild-mannered doctor as he becomes increasingly involved in the lives of the family living in the local, increasingly decrepit, possibly haunted mansion. Think Downton Abbey but creepy. Strange things keep happening inside the house, from dog bites to mysterious sounds to creepy black spots. Literally just typing that gave me goosebumps. It seems like someone may be out to get the family, but who...or what? Is it simply the ghosts of their own painful memories, or is something more? Sarah Waters is excellent at lush, intricate historical detail, and she leans into that here to create an atmosphere of slowly building dread and horror and mystery.

That being said, as a person who isn't normally a fan of horror, I don't think this book is too scary. It's more of an atmospheric, psychological horror than a jump-scare, bloody horror. It's not a book that will give you nightmares (probably), but you might lie awake thinking about it.

Also. Pro-tip. As a haunted(?) house story, the house is obviously fairly central to the story. Dear fellow Americans, keep in mind that the British refer to the floors of a building differently than us. For Americans, the ground-level floor is called the first floor, the floor above that the second floor, etc. For the British, the ground-level floor is the ground floor, and the floor above that is the first floor, etc. There's all sorts of creepy references to characters hearing noises above them on the first floor, but I was just like, Why are they always in the basement?

2) Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno Garcia

This and the above are two very different books, and yet they are both set in the mid-1900s and both are about weird, creepy, maybe-haunted houses. What can I say, I like gothic fiction.

After our heroine, Noemi, receives a bizarre, borderline incoherent letter from her beloved cousin, she sets out to visit her in the literally decaying mansion she resides in with her husband and his new family deep in the countryside of Mexico. All Noemi wants to do is persuade her cousin to come back home with her, but her cousin's new in-laws are very determined not to let that happen...or to let Noemi leave either. Secrets abound in the bizarre house and even creepier nearby cemetery, and soon Noemi finds that she too is suffering from bizarre dreams and visions...although, are they just dreams?

This book is so weird, but in such a good way? I read it for a book club and every week we had increasingly bizarre theories about what was going on, we were googling alchemy and fungi and St George, and some of our theories were even right. Although definitely not all. Another very twisty one that keeps you guessing.

In terms of scariness, interestingly I think there's more overtly creepy and horrifying moments in this novel than The Little Stranger, but I found TLS more overall scary? But that may be because I read it quickly, which I think is the ideal setting for suspenseful stuff, and I read Mexican Gothic over a longer amount of time since it was for a book club. This one does have some more typical horror elements to it, but I don't think it's more creepy than terrifying.

3) The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey

I listened to this one as an audiobook and the audiobook is excellent so would recommend that, but have no doubt it would also be great to physically read.

Oh my god this book...it's more thriller than horror, but I think it fits the brief. There were multiple moments listening to this book that I literally gasped or said "OH MY GOD!" out loud, and there are moments which are very creepy and horrifying. There's a particular scene in the backyard... Again, incredibly suspenseful and twisty. And the character development and character psychology is just! really really good! There's also really interesting and knotty feminist stuff which is a lot more complicated and nasty than some of the "girlboss" stuff which is popular right now.

Super minimal summary: All you really need to know is that it is a sci fi novel about a scientific researcher trying to pick up her life after her marriage has imploded, only for everything to go BATSHIT WRONG. Trust me, that's all you need to know, it's better to go into this not knowing what's going to happen or what to expect. I had no clue what this novel was about when I started it, and holy shit. Very good book, absolutely recommend this if you want some super suspenseful, creepy sci fi that will make you say "oh my GOD" repeatedly.

Okay, shifting gears a little now b/c autumn isn't just spooky, it's also cozy and restful and daydreamy!

4) The Thinking Woman's Guide to Real Magic by Emily Croy Barker

This isn't maybe a cozy book per se, but it's a great book to cuddle down with on a dreary day and lose yourself in. If you've ever asked yourself, "What would it be like if you crossed Pride and Prejudice with Howl's Moving Castle except the wizard was way worse but somehow still sexy" - then you should read this book! I actually came across this book b/c I was like, I wanna read a book that's a portal fantasy but for adults, and this book was like OH here's everything you wanted.

It's about a grad student, Nora, who has totally stalled out on her dissertation and is at a shitty wedding when she accidentally wanders through a portal into a beautiful, fantastical fairy world. At first, everything is amazing and literally perfect...but surprise surprise, not all as is it seems, and soon everything goes to, how should I put it, shit. Nora escapes, but rather than returning home, she finds herself trapped in a far more dreary realm. But not one without it's own charms and it's own magic, and Nora finds herself the student-slash-sorta-captive of the crochety, sexy, maybe-killed-his-wife magician Aruendiel* and she begins to learn magic herself.

Unlike the above books, this is not a fast-paced, twisty book, and I think if you go into this expecting high fantasy along the lines of Game of Thrones, you may be disappointed. It's not really a typical high-fantasy novel, it's more of a cross of an 18th/19th century realist novel, a fairy tale, and a fantasy novel. But if you want that, then it's REALLY good! I loved this book! And the magic in it is so cool, something about the way its described feels so visceral and real and like you could really do it if you just tried hard enough. There is a romance and it's totally, intentionally hashtag problematic, but it's very laid back, very slow burn, so I think even if you aren't a person who digs romance you can still enjoy this. If you're looking for a feminist-leaning fantasy novel that you can just sink into and lose yourself in, this is the perfect book. You will long to magically fix broken plates.

5) The Ruthless Lady's Guide to Wizardry by C.M. Waggoner

Honestly I can't even justify why I think this one is an autumn book. It simply is. It's autumn colored in my head. It is the coziest book I have ever read about necromancy and crime. Also I just want to recommend it. This is another one that I listened to as an audiobook and it's also a good audiobook, for those who are interested. But it also means I will not be able to spell absolutely any of the character's names.

This novel follows Delly, an enterprising young scoundrel of a fire witch with a teeny tiny gin habit as she attempts to support herself and her hot-mess of a mom in the roughest neighborhoods of Fantasy-City-That-I-Can't-Remember-The-Name-Of. Lice...gate? When Delly comes across an advertisement for a bodyguarding job for young women for a hefty fee, it seems like the answer to definitely not all but at least some of her problems. She accepts, along with an interesting assortment of other sorcerous young ladies, including a wonderfully bitchy Absentia (my love), a young woman who can turn into a boar, boar girl's necromancer mother, and the very sexy part-troll Winn, who in my imagination looks like Gwendoline Christie and talks like Miranda Hart. Which. Perfect woman. Winn being a fine, wealthy young lady, Delly can't help but think to herself that it wouldn't be such a bad thing if Winn happened to fall in love with her and carried her off to be rich and spoiled the rest of her life.

Of course, things quickly don't go to plan, and soon Delly and her companions find herself caught up in wicked schemes of murder, drugs, and an undead mouse named Buttons who says BONG. I love Buttons SO MUCH.

This book is just a silly romp of a novel which worms into your heart and your brain. It's fun and cute and gay, and also it made me cry. I haven't stopped thinking, "Not quite regulation hammerball" since I listened to it like half a year ago.

Also, while I'm here, this novel is set in the same world as and features a few of the same characters as Unnatural Magic. Which is also a hell of a book. Literally the best bisexual relationship I have ever fuckin read. It's a winter book tho, so I simply can't go into it here.
