In Ep55 A Place for Everything, when Minkowski thinks Kepler is doubting the likelihood of Eiffel still being alive after he's floated towards the star in his spacesuit, Minkowski says "Eiffel had plenty of air left, and let's not forget he survived for -" It seems pretty likely that she was about to say that Eiffel survived nearly 200 days stranded in deep space on Lovelace's shuttle. It's interesting to me that Minkowski uses that incident as evidence that Eiffel will survive this time too, because that's not really how situations like that work.
We don't know exactly how much Minkowski knows about Eiffel's time on Lovelace's shuttle, but the reality is that he survived for those 193 days due to an extremely specific combination of impressive ingenuity, incredible perseverance, access to the right resources, a fair dose of stupidity, and an extraordinary amount of sheer luck. Without just one of those ingredients, he would never have made back to the Hephaestus alive. The ingenuity and perseverance could serve him well in this situation too, but the other factors don't exactly apply in the same way.
In my view, it isn't really that Eiffel's survival on that shuttle serves as evidence of any specific attributes that will guarantee his survival this time. I think it's more that the events with Lovelace's shuttle - Minkowski thinking Eiffel was gone forever but then being miraculously reunited with him - have given Minkowski a non-specific sense of Eiffel as a person who survives, a person who ends up in nearly inescapable peril and yet somehow always escapes, a person who makes it back alive against all the odds. It's not a piece of logical practical evidence. It's just an emotional instinct that allows her to believe that she's not going to lose him, allowing her to focus on what she can do to try and find him.
Minkowski's 'Goddamn it Eiffel' when he floats towards the star in Ep53 is so much less dramatic than the way she yells his name as the shuttle drifts away in Ep28. And that's partly about what the story calls for in those moments. And it's partly about the specific situations and the agency Eiffel has had in them. But it's also that in Ep53 she already believes that he will be okay, that he'll come back. He's done it before. He'll do it again.

The thing about the miscommunication trope done RIGHT with Byler is that both of their behavior is totally rational and I would probably do the same based on what they think the situation is, AND they also have valid reason to dismiss the idea that the situation is anything else.

this post sucks lol can't we leave this bullshit in 2015. pharma companies wish they were allowed to say this. but they can't because it is demonstrably false. signed someone who was made suicidal by antidepressants (among other deleterious effects!) with zero prior history of suicidality.

I'm soooo close to having a zero tolerance policy for the insidiously regressive high-strung tripe that even remotely suggests you can infer someone's real life moral position on the basis of what they enjoy reading or writing in fiction. Yes that includes the weird sex stuff. Yes that includes the weird sex stuff that, in the real world, we consider repulsive and evil!
If you would never act on them and are at no risk of doing so, and they don't cause distress to you personally, the deranged horny contents of your creative imagination are MORALLY IRRELEVANT. That is net zero information. I don't care how annoying or gauche or gross you think some of the fandom people on this website are, and believe me I get it, but you are in fact a retrograde wet blanket scold and useful idiot if you buy into the idea that you can perform reliable character judgments about strangers NOT on the basis of their individual material actions and behavior, but on generalizations of what you imagine that they are imagining. Not an error margin I would be smug about but that's just me! Anyway, it is in fact incredibly normal and sane and adaptive to be able to entertain a rich fantasy life and to contemplate all sorts of wacky and extreme things that have zero bearing on your day-to-day experience and what you want out of it.

If I were smarter I would write an essay on how Bruce and Tim actually have very similar philosophies & logic to approaching dangerous situations- they’re both so smart and good tacticians that they will throw themselves into a risky action just based on instinct because they know they’re probably right. But. What if they weren’t?

Just making a general post real quick in response to an ask.
When I say I'm anti-ai I mean I'm against any sort of AI that steals from others or would otherwise be used to put people out of a job. I don't feel like having an elaborate conversation about the positives and negatives of AI and all that, so I'll state this as plainly as possible.
I don't like AI art. I don't like AI voice impersonations. I don't like any sort of AI that has to steal stuff from people without their consent in order to function. That is literally it.
I'm not against ALL AI. I don't think people that are okay with AI in general should be burned at the stake or something. I'm just an artist and writer that doesn't like AI being used in CREATIVE SPACES. That's it.
I didn't think I would have to clarify this but, here you go, for anyone that was bothered.

“don’t EVER use ceramics from before 1971, since they might contain lead in the glazes!”
listen
I check antique ceramics minutely for cracks, chips, glaze loss, crazing, pitting, etc. before ever using them, and only use them if everything is 100% intact
I check for telltale cloudy residue after washing them
I don’t put them in the fridge, dishwasher, or microwave
I don’t store food in them, or let anything acidic touch decorated areas of the dishes for long
I don’t use them as everyday pieces, much as I might long to. all my everyday china is modern and undecorated
I am an adult, almost 30 years old. I would never let a child eat or drink from antique dishware
I think, given the quantity of precautions I take, that I can be permitted to actually use tableware I also enjoy looking at every now and then. as a treat

Back to my Wolfwood being the oldest sibling bs, I’m thinking about how he has definitely done a joke or a prank that he didn’t know it would make the one at the end of it cry or something, so he would low key panic while instinctively trying to make them calm down and also bribe them into not telling about it to anyone else
This brings me to thinking he would do something like that to Vash, and paired with the fact that he tends to overreact as a comic relief (we know why we dont talk about thisrn) to whatever is going on, Vash would probably cry over it or act deeply offended
Now, while I think WW would know it was an overreaction just for comedy’s sake, I also think his older sibling instinct would kick in and would be like “hey hey calm down- it was a joke I promise I’m sorry- don’t tell anyone about this- no don’t cry- stop that- hey it’s okay shit sorry no- do you want a lollipop- I have one of those- don’t cry-”

Reverse dawn wants to kiss Robin so bad he looks stupid. Robin is oblivious (un)fortunately
Anon I need you to know I am still absolutely losing it over this ask I got it yesterday but was too tired to answer, and sleeping did not make it any less funny
Boy messed up so bad scaring them he shot himself in the foot about any and all future flirting - any time Robin scoffs and turns away from him he sheds a little metaphorical tear as his fingers twitch at the futility. Robin, under the impression that Dawn is ruthless and unpredictable and most definitely only interested in taunting them, is completely unaware of how wrapped around their finger he is.
Y/N comes home with flowers one day and an expression promising murder, runs into Moon who is very confused -
"My coworker got me flowers. He obviously did that to mock me."
Moon, looking from Y/N to the ridiculously elaborate bouquet, connecting zero dots, just pities the poor sod so obviously vying for their attention and failing miserably. (Can't deny being relieved, however, because he also wants to kiss Y/N so bad he looks stupid.)
Bonus points if the night before Sun kept pestering him about "Do you think I should get Robin flowers as apology for scaring them back then and also to ask for a do-over" and Moon went "Sure, seems pretty straightforward to me there's no way they wouldn't get it"

Motorists, please be aware that pedestrians measure near-misses in seconds, not metres. So if you managed to stop a couple of metres before the crosswalk that you didn't see the red light for, the pedestrian is too ticked to really be interested in your apology because she isn't going "oh, good, he had a factor of safety", she's aware that there was well under a second as a factor of safety.

I’m so confused. I’ve seen multiple people talk about how they want Ahsoka to break. To be bitter and angry and to lash out at others. And I don’t understand why.
(tw: discussion of trauma and mental breakdowns)
Like, she clearly has her trauma. She’s been through some incredibly horrible situations. But like, that doesn’t mean she has to be an asshole. Like some people might deal with trauma by lashing out at others and becoming bitter and angry. But that’s not the only way to deal.
Ahsoka appears to have settled into bottling things up. It lets her stay calmer. It feels safer. If she doesn’t give into her feelings then she can’t be controlled by them. That’s how she copes.
As someone who copes similarly, I feel like it is highly unlikely that she is going to give in to bitterness and anger, that she would lash out, that she would act in a way that has her losing control of her emotions. That’s what she is actively trying to avoid.
Also, everyone has a different breaking point. What it takes for someone to break varies wildly from person to person. It also depends on what “breaking” means in the context of the situation. And how a person responds to the break is different for everyone.
Considering what Ahsoka has already been through, how much she has dealt with, how much trauma she has had to learn to cope with, I feel like it would take something of incredible magnitude to break her. And if that were to happen, I suspect she would shut down and shut everyone out.
It is in her nature and it is her goal to do what is right, to be helpful to others or to a cause, to fight for the things that are worth fighting for. That will not change if she breaks. That will still be a part of her. Even in a deep moment of darkness, who she is would not change. She would still have those values. She would want to minimize the hurt of those around her and I bet that she would shut everyone out to accomplish that.
Maybe I’m rambling. But I don’t like the idea that because you have been through trauma and you have not dealt with the full extent of that trauma, that you will act like an asshole to everyone around you because of it. It doesn’t work like that. You can be traumatized and still be kind and compassionate and caring towards others.
Ahsoka will always try her best, even in her darkest moments.
