are people seriously mad about Lizzo playing Madison’s crystal flute
like
this is not a Kim K Marilyn dress situation, people. antique instruments are not like antique/vintage textiles- they get used all the time. you can find so many videos of people playing Stradivarius violins or very old pipe organs on YouTube
speaking as a museum worker, I think it’s possible to go too far the other direction from the whole Kim K attitude and assume nothing old should ever be used. which is also not true- nothing’s going to last forever, in the end! if an antique is in good enough condition to bear its original function safely, why not use it and enjoy it? there’s a 1790s grandfather clock in one of my museums that I get to wind and set every week; guests love to hear it chime the hour, and we have it serviced regularly to keep it running. should it silently gather dust when it can still safely fulfill its purpose?
(also also, the criticism is obviously not about concern for the flute in this case. it’s about racism. most of the outrage I’ve seen doesn’t say word one about Flute Conservation- just that it’s somehow Degrading for Lizzo, a classically trained flautist, to play this instrument. gee, I wonder why...)

19th century French sacred heart embroidered appliqué- this is probably a close up of a religious textile or garment like a priest’s cope.
