The missing Arthurian knight - rediscovered in 2019
Well the title is a slight lie - the missing knight wasn't rediscovered in 2019, it was earlier than that, but he didn't became public until 2019.
So what's this "missing knight" about? Well as the title says. There was a knight part of the Arthurian myth, and he had been missing ever since the Middle-Ages, and he was only recently rediscovered.
Or rather, to be exact - there was an Arthurian novel centered around a knight that existed and was a famous and well-known part of the Arthurian literature in the Middle-Ages, but that completely disappeared, and was forgotten by culture (as much popular culture as the scholarly one). Until very recently.
This rediscovered novel has been a hot topic of all Arthuriana fans in Europe for a few years now - and yet I do not see much talk about this onto this website, despite Tumblr being a big place for Arthurian fans?
So I will correct this by doing a series of posts about the subject. And this post will be the first one, the introduction post presenting to you "Ségurant, le chevalier au dragon" ; "Segurant, the knight of the dragon". A French medieval novel part of the Arthurian literature (hence the "chevalier au X" title structure - like Lancelot, the knight of the cart or Yvain the knight of the lion from Chrétien de Troyes), the reason this story was forgotten by all medievalist and literary scholars is - long story short - because it never existed in any full manuscript (at least none that survived to this day). It was a complete story yes, with even variations apparently, but that was cut into pieces and fragments inserted into various other manuscripts and texts (most notably various "Merlin's Prophecies").
The novel and the Knight of the Dragon were rediscovered through the work of Emanuele Arioli, who rediscovered a fragment of the story while looking at an old manuscript of a Merlin Prophecies, and then went on the hunt for the other fragments and pieces scattered around Europe, until he finally could compile the full story, that he then published in 2019, at the Belles Lettres publishing house, in 2019.
Arioli reconstructed the text, and translated it in both modern French and Italian for scholarly and professional editions (aka Honoré Champion in France, a reference for universities)...
... But also for a more "all public, found in all libraries" edition - the famous 2019 edition at Les Belles Lettres.
And not only that, but he also participated to both a comic book adaptation with Emiliano Tanzillo...
... and an adaptation as an illustrated children novel!
Finally, just a few weeks, the Franco-German channel Arte released a documentary about the reconstitution and content of this missing novel called "Le Chevalier au dragon: Le roman disparu de la Table Ronde". (The Knight of the Dragon - The missing novel of the Round Table). The full documentary is on Youtube in French for those that speak the language, here. And in German here for those who speak German.
Unfortunately there is no English version of the documentary that I know of, nor any English publications of the actual text - just French and Italian. But hey, I'll try to palliate to that by doing some English-speaking posts about this whole business!

the level at which people are misusing the term "Never Again" in the far left absolutely infuriates me.
"Never Again" doesn't refer to the idea of no more genocides -- unfortunately people are evil and corrupt and seek scapegoats and destruction, there were genocides in the years following the Holocaust, there were genocides 10 years ago, there are multiple genocides going on as we speak
"Never Again" means we as Jews will pay attention to the warning signs, will not mindlessly allow antisemitism to fester and take over our communities, we will fight back. it means we will be proud. it means we will not let you hate us without a word of refusal.
"Never Again" is a warning for us, it is a reminder that what happened then can happen now -- is happening now. The Far Left doesn't get to use it against us. You don't get to turn our tragedies into hate-speech and antisemitic rhetoric.

I'm still thinking about that scene in Victoriocity S3E7 where Fleet runs back towards the Beast so as to lure it into the path of the train...
Clara's exclamation of 'Teamwork, Fleet!' after Fleet says he's got a plan reflects her conviction that any plan that Fleet has will be a shared plan, something they do together.
This conviction is a kind of trust, and that trust is part of the reason Clara takes a moment to realise Fleet has headed back towards the Beast. She trusts that he's following behind her. She keeps talking to him, her words full of optimism.
When she realises Fleet isn't there, she immediately realises what that must mean he's done, and her voice sounds more small and scared than I think we've ever heard it before.
Fleet's attempt at self-sacrifice is a kind of betrayal of Clara's trust, but when he echoes her celebration of their teamwork in a more somber tone, I think it suggests that he understands the weight of that betrayal.
If Fleet's plan is that Clara won't realise he's gone until it's already too late, then he thinks "Teamwork, Clara" will be the last words he'll ever speak to her. In what he imagines will be their final conversation, Fleet affirms Clara's understanding of them as a team who work well together, even as he is making a choice that rejects the possibility of their teamwork in this scenario. It's a recognition of what their dynamic has meant. It's a goodbye and an apology, even if Clara doesn't understand it as such at first.
I don't think Fleet sounds scared as he initially faces down the train. When he shouts "Yeah, this way, you stupid machine! Come on then!", he sounds defiant and grimly determined.
In fact, I don't think he sounds afraid until Clara appears, until she might be at risk of being in the path of the Beast or the train as well. It's when he shouts "Clara, stay back for God's sake!" and "Please, get back!" that there's real fear and desperation in his voice. He can confront the idea of giving his own life, but not the idea that doing so might put Clara in danger.
Another thing about these lines is that the move from 'stay back' to 'get back' suggests that Clara didn't obey his first instruction but got closer to him (and therefore to the path of the Beast and the train) between those two lines.
Then Fleet gives what might be another attempt at his last words: "I'm sorry! I'm sorry." A repeated apology before an attempted self-sacrifice is an implicit acknowledgement of how much losing him would hurt Clara. He regrets causing her pain.
Even so, he's accepted that he is about to die and that it'd be worth it to destroy the Beast. But Clara very much hasn't accepted either those things. She's still trying to yell over the noise of the train; she's pulling off her ring to throw at him.
I think it's a good illustration of how Clara's optimism is a kind of strength. She always believes that they can "make a new plan" and that it'll be one in which no one has to die. I think Archibald Fleet needs someone like that, someone who'll tell him to drop to the ground when his death advances from both sides, someone who - even in a dark tunnel with an murderous metal monster and a speeding train - won't stop shouting that there's hope.

he decides to secretly give the app a go to “know his enemy” but ends up making a friend, and starts to catch feelings for him...and maybe realises the guy he hates isn't actually so bad either...

I loved this so much! great MC with a funny internal monologue
despite the title most issues or misunderstanding are sorted out pretty quickly rather than drawn out for the drama and plot. which is refreshing
I was a little nervous about the concept of ‘ace hates the school dance and wants it shut down’ - there's a bit of a stereotype of aspecs being boring Fun Haters - but I think it did a really good job of showing the specifics of why, not dragging it out, and also that he’s just a snarky fun hater in general with not much weight behind it.
There’s also no discovering of sexuality or big coming out (just one-on-one) - he already knows he’s ace, and it comes up naturally a bunch, talking about how dances etc can feel isolating, the way the friendship app called buddy being called ace-friendly can feel infantilizing, avoiding dating because of the stress of having to check upfront if people about it, etc.
I would have liked to know more about his relationship with his mum? Though I understand that it’s clearly something he avoids thinking about - going too deep into his relationship with his parents might have changed the tone a lot. but still.

But it also doesn’t feel emotionally anticlimactic.#(maybe a couple of the reveals in the confession felt unnecessarily dramatic to me? like the story would have functioned without them. )#but it's common for comtemporary ya to overdramatise silly things for the plot and im glad this didn't#possibly this is just my adult opinion about teen narratives.#The adult characters (even though they’re mostly background) feel like real people.#and it has some good friendships. also he has chickens and they are very good#it did become increasingly obvious that it was the same ppl but also they’re emotionally stupid. and like….it's part of the genre.#we all know this going in.

#I have so many thoughts through my mind these days I was barely able to focus on the episode. I kept zoning out#I made barely any post#Okay some thoughts. The thing that really hit me since the first time watching b/sd... Is the–#“I don't kill people because I want to write about lives” “I start doing good because my friend asked me to”#Like I get grey morals and everything but also. Sorry for being so simplistic but I think everyone should do good / not kill people–#because killing people is bad lol. No because of other personal reasons#I really *really* feel b/sd ultimately has a very nihilistic approach to life.#And that when Oda said “You won't find a reason to live whether side you're on. Both sides are the same.” it's not Oda-character talking–#but it's really the author expressing their own worldview through the one character that's the most distinguished#They really think there's no difference between good and bad in their little nihilistic world.#Which is something I personally don't agree with.#“It is a given that everything that is worth wanting will be lost the moment I obtain it”#......... No it's not you just need to go to the shore and listen to the waves crush and the seagulls squeal dude. It's going to be okay.#That's why it's so easy to portray Dazai as perfect and flawless for the author btw.#Because nothing he ever did in the pm was wrong if “good” and “bad” don't mean anything to begin with.#And this is coming from a deeply relativist person. idk man i've reblogged and said things about how certain people on this site and the bird one are putin defenders, syrian/ukranian genocide deniers, outright white supremacists, avowed antisemites, etc. pointed out the ways in which the current moment is being happily hijacked by white supremacists with very strong and obvious agendas. and some of you guys have reblogged and liked those posts, and then immediately gone on to continue reblogging violently antisemitic things from the very same people. so i don't think it's sinking in tbh

she wanders onward, never to arrive (or, why mark isn't in fe6)
Hello TOA,
I anticipate this getting long so I’m just going to put it on the dash instead of clogging the headcanons channel. This is the Red official headcanon for why Mark isn’t in FE6, besides the fact that avatars are an FE7 invention. Spoilers for FE7 follow.
I’ll save the cliffhanger - I believe by the time FE6 begins, Mark is dead, or at the very least uncontactable. She’s not present in the story because she can’t be there, not because she doesn’t want to be. The how she gets there is the interesting part to me, not the end goal.
One of Mark’s few canon traits is that she’s a wanderer. She never settles in one place for long, and her time with Lyn, Eliwood, and Hector is the longest she’s ever devoted herself to anything when she had the choice to leave. She doesn’t run away, but she can’t stay idle. To her, there’s always more to learn, more to see, and in the back of her mind she’s afraid that Bern is still somehow looking for her. It’s said she goes to wander after Lyn’s adventure, and only crosses paths with Eliwood and Hector by chance. So, I think it makes sense after the events of FE7, she’d pack her things and leave Pherae. It’s said in the game that Eliwood ascends roughly a year after the final map ends, and I do think Mark would stay nearby while Eliwood prepares to take on this new role, but she leaves just after his ascension. I don’t think she ever stays in one place that long again.
Mark’s path can best be described as a spiral - at first, she comes back to visit her friends every few months. She brings tales of far off adventure and research, endless new knowledge of tactics, wildlife, the very basics of anima magic. Then, the stretch of time is a year with no word. She says she was in Etruria, holed up in a library for far too long. She’s gone in the night, because she’s never gotten better at saying goodbye. Three years, with no word. She only stops to see Eliwood and Hector because she happened to be walking through their territories. Eventually, she just... stops showing up. It’s not out of resentment, or a want to isolate herself - it’s just that she cannot stay grounded, ever. Even when she spends a month with her friends, recovering after a particularly hard journey, her eyes are always on the horizon, her map is always wet with new ink.
And one day, word ends. Rumors of her appearance fade. Suddenly, it’s been longer than it’s ever been with no sign of her coming back. New rumors begin - bandits, magic gone wrong, another realm she fell into. Whatever happened, she’s not returning. By the time the epilogue scene happens 15 years after Eliwood’s ascension, Mark hasn’t been seen for years. By then, I think the rumors have resolved down to “Mark is gone.”
It’s up to her castmates whether they searched for her at all, especially since she all but vanished after Eliwood’s ascension. Actually, please talk to me about how your muses felt about Mark’s disappearance. I’d love to talk about how she’s awful at this.
I think something that complicates this is that Mark isn’t one to ride on her reputation. After leaving Pherae, she wants to lay low as a simple traveler, and that makes it a lot harder for anyone to track her down. It also, unfortunately, contributes to why she isn’t talked about at all in FE6. Her reputation after the war fell into legend, and when she stopped showing up, that’s all she was. A story, something to embellish the legends of Lyndis, Eliwood, and Hector. The shadow behind them, eyes turned skyward. Eventually, Mark’s name falls from the story, and her reputation gets even more stretched away from her. By the time the epilogue scene happens, Mark’s been all but dropped from the story, and if she’s spoken about at all, it’s either by people who knew her or as a separate legend of an unbeatable tactician.
As for what specifically happened to her, I think she was ambushed by bandits and killed on the road. She never is a fighter herself, and I think she really has a bad time with anima magic. She’s able to learn basics by that time, but placing one low level mage with a fire tome in a ring of brigands is going to give you a reset. In TOAverse, she will eventually begin to learn reason magic, but I am not going to make it easy for her. For now, she’s on the authority grind!

i do think it is exceedingly frustrating that we don't have a lot of information on the governance of fontaine. and in particular how much of an active role neuvillette has in it. especially in regards to the missed opportunity of what this leadership means to neuvillette.
we have this man who, while human shaped, is so far removed and isolated from humanity, placed in a position of having to rule them. especially when neuvillette at the start of his tenuredisdained humanity and likely would have been glad to see them removed from the equation or at least have nothing to do with them.
how lost in the weeds can he be focusing on merely the administrative aspects of ruling fontaine? he doesn't leave his office as we've had several instances of his own people being excited and shocked to see him and furina herself trying to push him to go out and interact with people more. then we have navia who straight up says that neuvillette has such a black and white view of the world, that he cares more about following the letter of the law than anything else. it's no wonder his lens of fontaine is through whatever crosses his desk. that he overlooks so much since this man just does not read between the lines.
but with the conclusion of his sq and fontaine aq, i have a small hope that moving forward he takes this opportunity to make fontaine better. he has people at his side who have experienced the ugly parts of fontaine and i truly hope that he sets up a system in which said people are given more power and influence to set up the change that fontaine needs, basically for neuvillete to stop being the one man gonverment that he's become and for that power to be spread a little more and for him to step away from tasks that shouldn't require his personal attention and allow him to focus on actively ruling.
quite frankly i really don't think he should remain as the chief justice as that's such a time consuming role for someone who is supposed to be ruling a nation. or at least he shouldn't be presiding over too many trials unless they're very super critical and necessary for his attention.

one of these days Im going to find the energy to type up every single Lost allusion Yellowjackets has made (up to four MASSIVE ones per episode, looking at you 2x6) because I don't see anyone else doing it on here and like. This show does not exist without Lost. These showrunners are writing a love letter to Lost.
