Lancelot and Galehaut for "classics... but make it gay II" zine by Nova and Mali early version of this legend was deleted in later Arthurian books, so... I think it's important to remember how much how much LGBT censorship and erasure is still in many, many countries

March to Camelot: an arthurian palette challenge for march 2024
When: March 1st to 31st Rules: The objective is to try to draw something Arthurian inspired by each word prompt using the palette provided. This could be anything from a full illustration to a character design. You have 5 days to complete each prompt, except for the last prompt where you get 6 days. If you have any questions, please feel free to send an ask. Why: I've been running a B5 palette challenge over on my fanart blog for the past couple of years and thought it'd be fun to do something similar with Arthurian Legend, even if it ended up just being me doing it. :') Finally, remember to tag your work #march to camelot or @ me so I can reblog and share your work. Happy drawing!

The missing Arthurian knight - rediscovered in 2019
Well the title is a slight lie - the missing knight wasn't rediscovered in 2019, it was earlier than that, but he didn't became public until 2019.
Tumblr media
So what's this "missing knight" about? Well as the title says. There was a knight part of the Arthurian myth, and he had been missing ever since the Middle-Ages, and he was only recently rediscovered.
Or rather, to be exact - there was an Arthurian novel centered around a knight that existed and was a famous and well-known part of the Arthurian literature in the Middle-Ages, but that completely disappeared, and was forgotten by culture (as much popular culture as the scholarly one). Until very recently.
This rediscovered novel has been a hot topic of all Arthuriana fans in Europe for a few years now - and yet I do not see much talk about this onto this website, despite Tumblr being a big place for Arthurian fans?
So I will correct this by doing a series of posts about the subject. And this post will be the first one, the introduction post presenting to you "Ségurant, le chevalier au dragon" ; "Segurant, the knight of the dragon". A French medieval novel part of the Arthurian literature (hence the "chevalier au X" title structure - like Lancelot, the knight of the cart or Yvain the knight of the lion from Chrétien de Troyes), the reason this story was forgotten by all medievalist and literary scholars is - long story short - because it never existed in any full manuscript (at least none that survived to this day). It was a complete story yes, with even variations apparently, but that was cut into pieces and fragments inserted into various other manuscripts and texts (most notably various "Merlin's Prophecies").
The novel and the Knight of the Dragon were rediscovered through the work of Emanuele Arioli, who rediscovered a fragment of the story while looking at an old manuscript of a Merlin Prophecies, and then went on the hunt for the other fragments and pieces scattered around Europe, until he finally could compile the full story, that he then published in 2019, at the Belles Lettres publishing house, in 2019.
Arioli reconstructed the text, and translated it in both modern French and Italian for scholarly and professional editions (aka Honoré Champion in France, a reference for universities)...
Tumblr media
... But also for a more "all public, found in all libraries" edition - the famous 2019 edition at Les Belles Lettres.
Tumblr media
And not only that, but he also participated to both a comic book adaptation with Emiliano Tanzillo...
Tumblr media
... and an adaptation as an illustrated children novel!
Tumblr media
Finally, just a few weeks, the Franco-German channel Arte released a documentary about the reconstitution and content of this missing novel called "Le Chevalier au dragon: Le roman disparu de la Table Ronde". (The Knight of the Dragon - The missing novel of the Round Table). The full documentary is on Youtube in French for those that speak the language, here. And in German here for those who speak German.
Unfortunately there is no English version of the documentary that I know of, nor any English publications of the actual text - just French and Italian. But hey, I'll try to palliate to that by doing some English-speaking posts about this whole business!

Sir Galahad from Arthurian Legend.
The red part of his outfit is a Gambeson, a type of padded fabric armour worn by itself or under metal plate armour. ^_^
(I'm also slightly proud of how weird that sword hilt design ended up.)

“I once saw the face of God, a vast and sudden silence among the noisy heavens. That evening I dreamt I listened to one side of a conversation I should not have overheard. I do not watch the skies anymore. I do not look up.”
Tumblr media
This Galahad lives in a dark fantasy world where monsters and terrible people run amuck and where everything sucks. He supposedly ascended to the heavenly realm after he found the Holy Grail, but nobody really knows what happened to him. He’s spotted years later as a lonely, jaded man who lost his chivalric spark. Whatever it was, he refuses to speak about it. Only God knows what he went through…

Gates of Avalon
Tumblr media
(Arthurian legends meet Witcher.)
The Gates of Avalon is a wip interactive fiction following Lancelot!MC, the companion of Prince Arthur and his best knight.
The lands are dying under King Uther’s iron rule and it seems war with the north is inevitable. Yet there's another, more pressing matter. Something has gone terribly wrong at the sacred isle of Avalon. There’re whispers of whole villages gone, of ghouls running freely in their streets. Talks of trolls that have gotten bolder and started to leave mountains, of harpies moving their nests and attacking settlements.
Blinded with greed, the King decides battling a foreign ruler is more important than protecting his own people and lands. A royal decree is issued. Under the punishment of death, no knight is allowed to leave Camelot.
Prince Arthur doesn’t care. He and a group of knights leave for Avalon before dawn.
FEATURES:
play as Lancelot!MC, a legendary knight of the Round table
customize your Lancelot - gender, appearance, personality,...
meet the future knights and other characters as a child and bond with them, grow and train together
take care of Galahad, an orphaned boy in need of saving and define your relationship with him
fall in love with one (or maybe more?) of the ROs or play purely platonic route
journey to Avalon through lands full of magic and dangerous creatures with a group of rag-tag knights
become a living legend, shape the fate of the Pendragon lands and those around you
tame a dragon?
THE ROS
Prince Arthur Pendragon (he/him): the Prince of Camelot and the leader of the Knights of the Round table, Arthur is a walking contradiction. He’s a brilliant stategist and warrior, able to think quickly on his feet, but fights with a snarl on his face and eyes narrowed into slits. He’s quick to anger, almost always slightly frowning and is incredibly arrogant. Yet he values his friends and people highly, ready to die for any of  them in a blink of an eye. He has...a complicated relationship with his father, King Uther. One that made him treat any of his failures as something unacceptable.
Knight Gawaine (M/F): one of the knights of the Round Table and one of your oldest friends, Gawaine is warm, friendly and likes to crack jokes. They’re liked by all, yet fight like they still have something to prove. You don’t know much about their life before they arrived to Camelot, no one does. They’re always quick to deflect with a smile, one that doesn’t quite reach their eyes. Gawaine is most proficient with double daggers and throwing knives and they’re the shortest of the knights.
Princess Morgaine le Fay (she/they) - The princess of Camelot and half-sister to Arthur Pendragon, Morgaine has a tongue that’s too sharp for her own good and attitude that makes more enemies than friends. They detest fighting with weapons and instead cultivate their powerful magical abilites, some of which might be a bit questionable...
Gwynnever (Gwyn) (F/M) - loud, excited and barefoot. Those were some of your first impressions when you first met Gwyn in the middle of the woods during your quest. Bluntly honest and a bit naive, Gwynnever is a forest fae that loves to sing and specialises in healing magic, which also does enormous damage to the undead. Fun.
Poly route: Arthur/Gawaine, Arthur/Gwyn, Morgaine/Gwyn

He clasps then the knight and kisses him thrice, as long and deliciously as he could lay them upon him. 'By Christ!' the other quoth, 'you've come by a fortune in winning such wares, were they worth what you paid.'

Day 16: Queen Guinevere
Guinevere was the wife of King Arthur, and thus Queen of Camelot.
Famously, she engaged in a love affair with her husband's foremost knight and trusted friend, Lancelot, indirectly causing the death of Arthur, many knights and the fall of Camelot.
It’s been a while since I’ve painted a woman, and I’ve not practiced them much at all, so I was hesitant to tackle sketching the female characters of the arthurian tales.  I was expecting to suck at it terribly.
I’m happy with how Guinevere turned out though - so happy in fact, that you can expect to see Morgan le Fay for tomorrow’s sketch!
