#happy world bipolar day to all my bp babies #(more thoughts at the end of the tags)#shameless #shamelessnet #shamelessedit #ian gallagher #cameron monaghan #*macygifs #bipolar disorder #hello pals how are we doin #i made this gif set in july of 2023 and never posted it because 1) i was terrified to share it and potentially see Bad Takes in the tags #and 2) because my hyperfixation was waning. and while both of those things are still mostly true (the fixation comes and goes)#i feel like it's really important to share as ian's bipolar storyline was not only so vital to his character it was a bit of representation #that isn't often given to the disorder and those (like myself) who live with it every single day #world bipolar day is a day where we can both celebrate ourselves and our resilience and also raise awareness of the reality of the disorder #which is both terrifying and beautiful at its core. this disease is not a death sentence or a sentence to an unfulfilled and miserable life #while there are challenges galore when it comes to balancing life with this disorder it IS possible to live a full and productive life #and i think it's really important to have representation of that in media - and while shameless dropped the ball on a LOT of storylines #over the years THIS is the one they really fucking nailed and i am incredibly grateful #i first started watching shameless while in the midst of a major depressive episode and i was later (finally) diagnosed during an extended #hypo/manic episode - this show and ian's storyline got me through so much and made me feel so seen and validated in my struggles #world bipolar day is also vincent van gogh's birthday (happy birthday buddy) who was posthumously diagnosed with bipolar disorder #and who experienced both depressive and hypo/manic episodes during his lifetime (and was regularly institutionalized)#it takes a lot of help and support to keep us going. it takes the support of our family and friends and *most* of all #it takes patience and kindness and understanding - which is so so so easy to give if you are willing to love and listen #so please. be willing. listen to our stories. be patient with us. show us love without conditions. support us in any way you can.#we are worth it #i promise #anyway. that's really all i wanted to say. happy world bipolar day to those who celebrate (me) and may all of us living with this disorder #go on to live happy fulfilling beautiful magical lives

I think ultimately if DC had Pride in the 90s we would have been given some of the most bold and compelling meaningful queer stories compared to today bc DC is a simpering coward about this. I love how we're in a time period where never before we have had such diversity, but the cost is hypersanitization doubled with feeling patronized at multiple turns.

I don't like feeling talked down to in any story, even more so in stories that are supposed to celebrate Pride.

#people being so hypercritical of queer stories definitely contributed to the state of being now #i did like many stories in this years pride keep in mind #this is just a blanket statement looking at the trend over the years #i can still see the positives even in a lot of the areas where i personally felt the bar was missed entirely #it's not all bad but yikes #that jon story still makes my head hurt not just from a pride standpoint but from a comic fan standpoint

That's it. That's the list. 7 panels. Not a single double spread or even a full-page image. Actually, there is no panel where all their faces are visible.

I don't think there is any other prominent group / dynamic in the manga that got an endgame of nothing but low-quality, tiny panels without a piece of art emphasizing them as a unit. It's just really weird... That after more than a decade, the family is finally together, and that moment after the long build-up doesn't get a single "impact" art. A framing that shows that something big happened here.

And if this is about Shouto "becoming who he is meant to be" why is there no double spread or a big page art to emphasize it?

I'm not sure if that last panel is supposed to be Enji's "father" moment - but it's certainly not framed like it. You need a magnifying glass to even see what's happening, in a chapter otherwise full of gorgeous art.

But I mean in the same way FSM sucks. I really really really like it when godlike beings are so detached from the reality they created that they're not INTENTIONALLY doing anything bad or harmful, but they simply don't conceptualize right and wrong the same way mortals do

Like. FSM did not talk much to his kids for literal years after the scroll of forbidden spinjitzu incident. That is a canon thing that happened because he's p much god! He's a shitty parent because he has no point of reference! The concept of parenthood is like not a thing for him in the same way, honestly would not be surprised if his main intention for having Wu and Garm was to have someone protect his realm when he died. That's really bad in hindsight! But he was born and there was immediately a war fought for his favor he does not know anything else because he is not mortal!!

Idk that level of detachment when it comes to godlike beings especially those who are meant to represent the concept of "goodness" and creation and all that is far more interesting to me than when they are objectively good and do only good things

#taz talks #writing #actually i WILL explain but i'll do it in the tags #these each serve the same function within their respective appropriate genres #each one is a kind of revelation #they heighten the connection between 2+ characters and highlight relationships and feelings and needs #they are out of place in genres where they do not belong and/or as curveballs when the narrative did not provoke them from the start #but they have the same sort of emotional/dramatic build-up #talk -> sing -> dance (talk -> yell -> stab) ((talk -> flirt -> You Know))#and they are all expressions of intense physicality and intimacy through physical gesture and interaction #they are fundamentally empty and boring if there is not a deeper purpose or drive behind them #although they can still occasionally be entertaining on their own if your audience is specifically seeking that experience out #people who do not like them will be very unhappy to encounter one where it isn't supposed to be #it is very easy to ruin the mood with poor word choice #many people have an inherent sense for terrible ones but it's often difficult or complicated to explain precisely why a bad one fails #when executed properly they are a very raw and intimate expression of a character's most fundamental needs and desires #the fluff is stripped away and there is nothing left but a series of needs. conflicting or cooperating.#and even when you're lying during one it's still a form of truth #none of these things are remotely necessary to tell a powerful or compelling story but if you're going to use them you need to do it right #also all 3 of these things are difficult if not impossible to write if you are not both interested in them and personally invested #this post brought to you by me trying to write smut about my dnd characters and failing because i generally hate /reading/ smut #so i have none of the vocabulary or instinct for it that i do for. say. graphic violence (or lyrical poetry)

you know existing in the modern media landscape is funny cuz like

i genuinely love adaptations. like as a concept. they're transformative works, right? ideally, it's the same soul that drives all fandom write large

you go 'how do translate this story?' how do you take words and make them into images? how do you take images and turn them into film? how can a film use a score the way a book used narration? do you cut this character, prune that plotline, like a bonsai? or conversely, do you need to lay a new bed for under explored story-beats to grow?

a well told adaptation is amazing. it deepens the story, it expands your understanding of both texts.

but as more and more of the stories i love get adapted the more i realise the vast majority of the studios and/or the people they hire for these jobs don't give a shit of any of that, and are just looking for a new IP to toss into the Content Regurgitation Machine
