When I was younger and researching the autism diagnosis criteria and symptoms, I thought “oh I couldn’t POSSIBLY be autistic.” Because when I read “takes everything literally” I thought it literally meant EVERYTHING and I was like “I don’t take EVERYTHING literally, just most things!” And I just realized the other day that it didn’t actually mean EVERYTHING and that was an overstatement.
#this#there's also the problem of 'compared to'#where the test givers somehow expect you to have a built-in understanding for what their baseline of normal is#but if you have grown up in a household of undiagnosed family members or etc then your idea of a 'having trouble getting out of bed'#might be VERY DIFFERENT from what they actually mean#you're sitting there going 'no I could get up if I really had to piss or if the house was on fire I think'#and saying 'I only have trouble sometimes' meaning 'I would rarely not get out of bed if the house was on fire'#and they're hearing 'oh I don't like getting up on weekends when the blankets are cozy and the floor is cold'

the funniest dynamc between my boyfriend and i is the chef/baker divide runs so deep. experimentally my boyfriend is a genius with figuring out what flavor profiles will not just taste good together but also will be enjoyed by the specific audience he is cooking for. a recipe is not a guidebook so much as a suggestion and he will frankenstein ideas together to get exactly what he wants to happen. he also didnt know that sugar will not work properly if you dont mix it with the wet ingredients in banana bread and when i asked 'why didnt you do it in the order of the recipe' he said 'i didnt really think it mattered'. autistically i exploded his head in my mind
#it's all going in the same bowl yes but the chemical things that have to happen can change#depending on what you do to the ingredients before they go in there#if you dissolve the sugar in your liquid first it changes how the sugar behaves in the cooking process#same as how making egg custard and making scrambled eggs require you treat the eggs differently#but in fact you CAN be a very inventive baker you just have to understand why/how baking works first#if you know what the sugar is doing and why you can make informed choices based on what you want to achieve rather than following a recipe#you just can't do that if you don't actually know how it works first#or rather you can but your cake's going to suck and your yeast is going to die and your icing is going to be grainy

#I remember when facebook launched#and me and every other kid my age was flabbergasted at the adults#who had been telling us up until that point to never give out our real names or info online#all queuing up to stick their real names and photos and jobs and etc onto this thing#still boggles my mind sometimes#feels like a fairy story#like the main character's mother chides them not to ever eat the fruit of the underworld#and so the child goes and every time evades all the tricks and doesn't touch the food#until one day they can't find their mother and so they go and look and lo and behold there she is feasting at the fairy banquet#turns out that when she was talking about not eating the food it was just a thing that everyone always said#and then when she got there and the food looked delish she suddenly doubted why that silly old maxim should be true#moral of the story is that sometimes your parents are fucking morons

I saw a very blunt Instagram comment today that told a writer, "AI is going to steal your job soon. You may want to choose something else." It was so nonchalant and casual, like what was just said wasn't heartbreaking to hear.
Can we writers just make a pact just to... not quit? Can we not give in so easily? Can we actually fight to keep our professions and continue to share our own original work? I will never expect writing to be my main source of income, but that does not mean I'm so willing to give it up for the sake of some robot.
