If there's one take-away I want to make clear about ruining your career by pettily review-bombing other writers, it's that traditional publishing is not a competition you can win. You have no control over how well your sales do versus someone else's sales. No amount self-promotion, hard work, and social media is going to guarantee a viral tweet, a Booktok sensation, or rave reviews. Those are beyond your control.

In this, your fellow authors are not your rivals, but your peers. If you are not super rich or well-connected, you will be reliant on connections you have to communities that know and trust you, and this is far more important than anything you do on your own. The publishing world is quite small, and these relationships will be a boon in building your future opportunities as well as helping other writers. The industry, in fact, relies on selling books with similar themes at the same time, because they know readers who like one Greek-inspired fantasy will likely pick up another one. That's how publishing trends work!

Publishing is never going to be free from drama or interpersonal-driven conflict. Review-bombing is going to continue, driven by political or ideological agendas. But treating what should be a professional career as some sort of winner-takes-all Squid Game is going to blow up in your face the moment you're caught out, and it will ruin your career before it even begins.

Funfacts about PTM Characters!

Still chilling out from finishing my thesis, but I had a few fun facts about the side characters for PTM that I'd thought you'd all enjoy in the meantime! It's gonna include some of the canon characters as well as the ocs!

This includes some very minor, but not story defining, spoilers for PTM so proceed with caution! As a reminder, PTM takes place a school year after the current timeline!

Canon Characters:

Jade and Floyd made bets on who would get together with their crush first during their 3rd year. The loser has to let the winner(s) plan and execute the most humiliating way to confess. Neither twin is winning. Azul is currently winning with his bet of “neither of you will, you cowards.”

Ortho went to most of Idia's classes during his time at NRC, so he was allowed to “skip” repeating those years when becoming an official student by taking a competency exam. However, he is still staying for a year since the test only allows for core classes and not his electives. He's happy to do so, though.

Idia stayed at NRC to complete his internship with the school, much to his disappointment. He works as a Technomage Intern with the college's technology department.

The overblot cast got closer with each other and Yuu than expected over the summer due to Crowley and S.T.Y.X. requiring them to take part in a “summer camp” to monitor them and their health. Leona still hates Malleus though. Malleus is still mostly unaware of this.

Malleus still does not know how to use technology. Sebek and Yuu have a weekly call with him via a looking glass mirror that acts like a video call. Malleus enjoys it very much.

Kalim switched places with Jamil and is now vice housewarden, while Jamil is now housewarden. Neither's families were happy about this, but were shut down by Kalim being surprisingly firm about his decision. To everyone's surprise, Kalim does very well as a vice over a housewarden, though Scarabia has had significantly fewer parties since the switch.

Nearly all the clubs that had the 3rd years as captains/heads had one of the 2nd years take over into their 3rd year. Ruggie is now Spelldrive Captain, Azul is head of the Board Game Club, and the Gargoyle Studies Club is headed by Yuu. The Pop Music Club is also more formalized now, with Kalim as the head. The Science Club and Film Studies have an NPC 3rd year as heads.

Yuu isn't actually that bad at singing as everyone has (and will continue to do so) suggested. Most of the student body had classical training growing up as part of their privileged upbringing, and Yuu has to compete with that.

At least two pairs of canon characters will get together at the end! Guess who tehe.

OC:

Silas likes to eat bugs and regularly digs in the dirt behind Ramshackle to find something crunchy to munch. They did it once in front of Jamil and the poor guy screamed in horror.

Yev became the new Pomefiore housewarden due to being able to produce the best posion, as per tradition. However, he's actually quite bad at being a housewarden and his vice is the one that everyone tends to listen to.

The Salson triplets are from the TWST equivalent of Salem, and have a North easterner accent, similar to Boston I think. Wynfred and Marion mimic English, or Rosarian, accents, but Silas does not.

There are two more mermen in the school, minus the canon cast and two ocs. They aren't important to the story, but their names are Mariano De La Reyes and Benji (last name still pending). They're based off of Marina and Benjamin from the third Little Mermaid movie.

Speaking of mermen, Aspen is a squidmer and is based on the colossal squid. He's about 18 ft long and still growing. Tony is based on a tiger shark, but is the runt of his litter, hence why he's so small.

Tommy, the white rabbit beastmen that was introduced as Riddle's new vice, is notorious for always running late. He never has actually been late to anything due to parkouring everywhere and climbing the castle walls to enter the classrooms through the windows. Floyd learned how to parkour from him. Riddle hates everything about this.

Briefly mentioned in the last chapter was the botany professor, Kallpa. Kallpa is based on Kronk and the uncle of Yev.

Nurse Goethel has a wife and two daughters that she brings with her to family days on campus. The daughters are roughly age 11 and 13 and each time they've come have designated a student as the new person they want to marry. Two years ago it was Leona and Trey, last year it was Azul and Jamil, this year it's Jack and Ortho. There is no reasoning behind their decision, it's all based on vibes.

James has met Jade and Floyd when they were all very young. James was on his Great Aunt's ship, who was meeting with Papa Leech for unknown reasons. James only remembers them due to their heterochromia eyes, but the twins don't remember anything.

Marion has a really strong sense of smell that is on par with the beastmen. He hates Pomefiore because the dorm and students are heavily perfumed and it gives him a migraine.

Yaqub actually has a twin brother that goes to RSA. He thinks it's funny that it turned out that way and they like to shittalk their schools together on the weekends. RSA is much more chaotic and full of troublemakers than NRC realizes.

At least two pairs of the freshmen will get together at the end of PTM, but it will be a surprise as to who!

And that's all! I have more but I think I'll save them for another time!

Jade: Calm down, Azul. I've read the rules. Someone just needs to win so Senpai won't be forced to date a stranger.

Azul: We should be able to decline but... Ugh! What's wrong with you, Floyd?!

Floyd: What's with you? Senpai has no problem about it when I told him.

Floyd: As long as there won't be minors in the said show, he's fine on dating anyone to be honest.

Azul: Jade, we need to ask people to join!

Jade: On it.

Azul: And you, Floyd— *frustrated groan*

Floyd: *frowns*

Floyd: Senpai, they're all being meanie.

MC: Hm? You did nothing wrong. You just happened to miss it.

Floyd: Yeah. But are you sure that you're okay with it? I can just squeeze the producer—

MC: *chuckles* No, Floyd. It's fine. I've been in similar situations before. This is not new to me.

Floyd: Oh. So. Who do you think will win?

MC: They're going to decide the winner through a raffle draw. And the participants are mainly gamers.

Floyd: Oh...

Floyd: Then I will ask Firefly Squid to win.

Idia: *really ended up winning out of all hundreds of participants*

Idia: I was expecting more of a typical date like in dating simulations.

MC: The producer only followed the ideal date you wrote down, Idia.

Idia: Yeah. "To game and cuddle in peace."

Idia: But I can't be too comfortable with senpai.

MC: That's because you're thinking too much about it. *pulling him close*

Idia: S-S-Senpai?

MC: Hush now, Idia. We both need to sleep.

Summary of the new Splatoon character chart from the Nintendo JP website

I spent a couple hours writing up a summary of all the new, noteworthy, or otherwise obscure information from this character chart. Basically, if its lore that’s been mentioned in a more known source like a sunken scroll or in the game itself, I left it out. Click the link above to see the chart, its interactive and more than what I can fit in a single screenshot. Summary under the cut, with my own notes written in brackets.

Agent 3/S1 Player character -came from a region a little far from Inkopolis where there are many prosperous towns. they left their parents at age 14 and moved to the city. [old comic in the 1st artbook followed this backstory. mentions of parents are rare in splatoon lol] -the age that inklings gain their humanoid form varies, but its usually around age 14 [mentioned in 1st artbook, nice to see it brought up again] -some inklings keen on turf wars participate in competitions held in distant lands [probably in reference to IRL competitions] Agent 4/S2 Player character -came from a place about 40 minutes away from Inkopolis square by train, so they didn't have as much longing for the city as the S1 player character -was too busy with extracurriculars to know who Marie/the squid sisters were [previously mentioned in the S2 artbook] -many Salmon Runners have become "addicted" to the work Pearl -She thought of the Squid Sisters as rivals, but the 2 duos hit it off when they performed together in a distant foreign country. -When she gets serious, she builds up emotional energy by hopping side to side [in the JP version of Octo Expansion, she does this to build up her special to use the princess cannon. this was localized to her warming up her vocal chords in English.] Marina -She loves shoujo manga and practices her crosshatching -She got the groove of the squids in her soul after hearing the Inkantation [bringing this up because in the JP dialogue there's no mention of being 'freed of the oppression of Octarian society' or whatever. She wasn’t literally sci-fi mind controlled by Octavio, and still holds some respect for him despite leaving the Octarian world] -her description is "Maiden in love," the word for "love" seems to be the romantic type. [pearlina real???????] Callie and Marie -Callie loves the outdoors, while Marie is bad with both hot and cold weather -Their debut happened after their performance at a youth singing competition in their home region caught the attention of Shy-ho-shy, who then went on to become their producer [mentioned in Splatune album jacket] Agent 8 -worked in combat in Octarian society -really looks up to Agent 3 and has a “strong mental image” of them. Watched the battle between them and Octavio. [the inner agent 3 fight was never real, its just 8's active imagination. hence the name “inner” agent 3.] Judd and Lil Judd -Judd's eyes are able to instantly determine the winner of turf wars -the voice that you hear when first arriving in inkopolis is not some out-of-universe narrator, it's Judd talking telepathically -While Lil Judd is always plotting to backstab Judd, his plans fail because he's too small -Lil Judd is basically an omnivore, but is especially interested in 'crispy prawns' -once again it's brought up that judd and lil judd are the only 2 mammals to exist, and that judd is immortal. [considering Lil Judd was intended to be a back up for Judd in case he died in cryo freezing, I wouldn't be surprised if lil judd was immortal as well. hasn’t been confirmed tho] Capn Cuttlefish -[if you played Octo Expansion then nothing really new in his info, mostly stuff mentioned in the chat logs.] over 100 years old. made the zapfish plushies that appear in place of the real zapfishes when you replay a level. Annie and Moe -Annie is a fan of metal music -Sheldon sometimes asks her to help him decorate weapons -Moe is a bit overweight because Annie feeds him a lot of sweets

Crusty Sean -he can sometimes sense that Judd and lil Judd are looking at him in a "i want to eat you" way, but he doesn't seem to care. -not new info, but the tidbit about why he uses tickets instead of cash is mentioned. Basically when he first set up his food truck, the long lines were bothersome to the folks running The Shoal, so he worked with the Inkopolis chamber of commerce to set up the ticket system to cut down on lines and bring customers into The Shoal as well.

Jelonzo -his store doesnt sell pants because jellyfish dont wear pants [makes sense lol] Jelfonzo -He won the National Karuta Tournament on his first go because of all the old books he read to memorize the Inkling language. Flow and Craymond -Flow loves to drink alcohol, and when she gets drunk, she loves teasing cute kids. [in the 2nd artbook theres art of her getting drunk. Nevermore Theory pt.3

Alright y'all I think a few things are going to happen by the end of Nevermore you can tell me if I'm wrong or not

1. I have a distinct feeling that the deans are purposefully pitting people against each other because I have a feeling that there's some type of loophole in their rules that make it to where more than one person can get that second chance at life but they don't want that for some reason. And I while I do think that there's more than one reason I'm pretty sure one of them maybe because they find having the students fighting more entertaining. Which is probably why they were trying to manipulating Annabel Lee because they knew that would she remember that Lenore used to be her lover and wouldn't want to fight her, so they made her come to the conclusion that she needs to kill off the other students. The same thing goes for Lenore, they knew that Lenore was somebody who cares deeply for the people closest to her so they made Annabel lee be the one to kill them because it would give the Dean's what they want, to cause enough tension between Annabel and Lenore to cause them to kill one another and their friends.

-Plus could be the reason why they continue to do challenges where the students with no specters have to fight against the students that do have specters.

2. Lenore, Annabel Lee and some of their friends by the end of the story are probably going to end up having the fight the Deans because of the fact Dean's first plan of having one person be the winner by them taking each other out didn't work so they're going to try to kill them to leave one person as the "winner". Leaning towards it being a squid game situation where it seems like there can only be one winner but in reality it can be more than one.

Okay quick guide for the people who don't know, SquidCraft follows the dynamic of the Squid Games: Players play a bunch of games and the winner is decided by elimination and they will win 100k dollars. This games are based on childhood games and participants don't know which ones are or how to play them cause they've been designed for this event specifically. The event will probably be between 3 and 4 days long, and the duration of each day is around 4-6 hours, depending on how fast they can complete the challenges and/if there are technical difficulties. Don't worry about language because they have translation in real timen so everyone will understands clearly all the rules and messages. I hope you like the event!

Compress had uh…well… not so good day. Actually it maybe one of the shittiest days of his life. He’s had numerous unlucky bad days but none of the compare to today. It just started awful from when he burnt it breakfast and everything after that was just terrible. All he wanted to do now was just relax to take his mind off of all of the horrible stuff that occurred.

“Aww thats so rude I was just about to be 1st, I’m the winner” Twice whined. “That’s the same person who hit me with a squid” Toga agreed complaining aswell.

“Oh hey press what’s wrong? Did something happen? Let me beat them to a pulp”Twice greeted him questioning him as he cracked his knuckles. “Yeah press what’s wrong?” Toga turned around seeing how upset he looked.

“It was not a…good day is all” compress sighed trying not to think of it. “Do you wanna play Mario kart with us?” Toga asked as she picked up an extra controller handing it to him. “You’ll probably feel better, I’m getting 1st place again” Twice chimed in. “Y-yeah thanks you two” Compress half-heartily smiled grabbing the controller.

“I call dibs on princess peach” Toga smiled claiming her character. “I call dibs on Waluigi” Twice followed up also claiming his character. “Hmmmmmm I’ll take Kamek” He also claimed his character. “Which one should we play on?” Toga asked. “How about 150cc” compress suggested, plus that was his go to anyways. “Sure you guys are gonna lose anyways, I’ll kick both of your asses blindfolded” twice teased.

“Didn’t you lose last time according to my memory?” Toga smirked. “Um NO I was in 1st place and you know it!” twice folded his arms, looking away from her. Compress couldn’t help but chuckle at there antics.

Just as the race started, compress was in 1st with toga in 3rd and twice in 9th. “Woah press didn’t know you were good at Mario Kart”

“Well I have been playing with shiggy”compress half heartedly giggled. “What shiggy plays games other than animal crossing?!” Toga laughed. “Yeah I know I was surprised when we asked me to play Mario kart” Compress scoffed.

“I WAS SOOO close” twice whined. “ 2nd is the best aka me how’d you get in 8th place ” toga giggled. “You really are good press” toga smiled before she quickly stopped interrogating him “compress? is that a frown?”

“No nope it’s and upside down smile” he lied badly. But was toga or twice gonna point it out? Nope she has an plan in mind. “D-do you wanna play another round we can play 200cc this time” compress stuttered as he insisted another round not wanting toga nor twice to be upset.

“Hmm fine 1 more round” she squinted her eyes at him. When compress looked away sighing in relief he hadn’t payed attention to the code she’d given twice. (Yes they got this little code thing that only the two of them can understand😭😭).

Once again compress taking the lead in first place with Toga in 2nd and Twice in 3rd they were all neck and neck before he felt a jab to the side.

“Hn!!” Compress yelped, jerking away from the ticklish touch. He looked a twice to see him with both of his hands occupied by his controller. He just ignored it and glued his eyes back into the screen.

I got a banana pEEL” Compress squeaked, clenching his controller he looked over at toga who totally didn’t pinch his hip. Once again compress suspected nothing yet before looking right back at the screen.

This trend kept on happening. Were twice and toga take turns poking compress in the side, swiping a finger across his foot, or a light scratch on the back of his neck. All until “guhuys knock it ohoff this is chehEating” He giggled.

“What are you talking about and why are you so giggly” toga smirked full aware of the situation. “I wonder what’s so funny, He’s giggling his life away” Twice added on.

Both Twice and Toga looked at eachother as they clawed Compress sides. Compress immediately clamped his arms down to his side trying to escape the tickly grip “guhuhuys nohohot funnehehehe”. “Nobody’s laughing but you press— Duhhhh” Twice teased.

“Stohohohohop ihihihit”

“Stop what” toga asked.

“Tihihickling mhehehehe”Compress answered not realizing that he just fell into a trap by saying that. Twice then pins his arms above his head “You got it dude!! tickles coming your way”Twice teased as he used one hand to hold his wrists in place, while he raked his fingers down his armpits.

“Nononohoho thahahat’s not whahahat I meAAAHAHANT AHAHA” Press shrieked as he squirmed around trying to escape.

“Stop squirming Press im trying to make sure you have all of you’re ribs” Toga rolled her eyes. “Now I have to start over 1….2….3…” each rib she counted, she used her nail to lightly scratch between it.

“TOHOHOOHGAHAHAHA IT TICKLEHEHEHEHEES”

“I mean I hope it does after all you did ask for tickles” she reminded. “Press you made me lose track again hmmmm let’s see how many did I count” she acted clueless as she rapidly pinched his sides and hips.

“THAHAHAHTS SO BAHAHAHAD HAAHAHAHAHA” he thrashed around.

“Oh it is what about here?” Twice smirked, as he was near his feet. Compress hadn’t noticed that twice had use his quirk one was keeping him pin down while he was near his feet.

“Waitwaitwahahahait twice twice buddy cohome on let’s tahahalk about thihis” press lifted up his head as much as he could so he could look at twice and try to reason with him.

“Sorry man you broke toga’s rule” twice shrugged his shoulders. “Whahahat rule?” “Her ‘good vibes only’ rule— you’re obviously sad we’re not blind” he explained.

“Ihi’m nohot sad though” press giggled, becoming more and more giggly as he started to anticipate the tickles, since he could barely lift up his head.

“Too late dude—much love” Twice smiled as he scribbled up and down the soles of his feet.

“TWIHIHICE NAHAHAHAHA”

“Hey I’m here too y’know” she playfully pouted as she squeezed his thighs rapidly.

“NOHOHO TOGAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHA”

“Will you stop being sad and tell us what’s wrong?” Toga asked.

“OHOHOHOHKAHAAHAY OHOHOKAHAHAY I WON’T BE SAD ANEHEHEHEHEMORE AAHHAHA IHIHLL TELL YOUAHAHAHAHA”

“You promise?” They both asked.

“YES YEHEHEHEES I PROMISE AHAHHAHAA”

“Good” Toga sighed in relief.

“Well what happened why’d you come in looking so gloomy?” Twice asked. “Ihi just had a shitty dahay from start to finishehe from when I burnt my breakfast, all the way to when I came back here, it just messed with my emotions and of course got to me. I was just ready to come back and relax but after that torture you two goofs out me through I feel a lot better” he smiled.

“We didn’t take it too far did we?” Twice asked also. “Of course not it’s was just playful banter” press giggled.

“I’m glad you told us, also we don’t ever want to cross and boundaries we just really care about you and don’t like seeing you so sad and gloomy” Toga spoke her mind and twice of course.

“If anything ever makes you sad again promise to tell us” Twice looked at him in his eyes. “Ihi promise” press couldn’t help but giggle. “You guys are so sappy” Dabi rolled his eyes as he sat on the couch.

“Looks like some one else need to be tickle tooooo” twice sang as he wiggled his fingers at Dabi. “I swear on Endeavor if you tickle me you’ll have a 6th degree burn” Dabi playfully threatened. “6th degree? That’s not even a thing!!” Toga looked at him lost.

“Exactly that’s how severe it is” Dabi smirked.

This was such a great year for books! My TBR pile never once came close to empty and I always had a plethora of choices to choose from. I had a hard choice trying to decide what my top favs would be but ultimately decided on books that I know I would love to read again and again. All of these books were stories I couldn't put down and sacrificed sleep over - all extremely well worth it!

norma would be an octoling, and she'd main whatever's "meta defining" at the time instead of just picking a weapon she thinks is neat. what's the point if it's not the best!!

she has main character syndrome i think. she's EXTREMELY bossy and takes the game too seriously. she orders around her team (take the left flank!! cover me while i get the rainmaker!! nooo don't go over there i need you over here defending!!!!) and her instructions are almost always geared toward her getting her teammates to clear a path for her to take all the glory...it never quite goes well. she insists it's her genius planning and direction that gets her team to win matches but she couldn't be more wrong. she also probably blames her teammates when stuff goes wrong. you didn't coordinate well enough!! you didn't listen!!

her favorite mode is rainmaker and her locker is actually pretty neat looking. she shows off all her perfect gear in there and would probably have some of the amiibo items too. she's B- rank.

LIZZIE NATIVIDAD

lizzie is also an octoling causeee sisters! she'd be a skirmisher/slayer and be really good at baiting other players into unsafe situations where she or someone else on her team can splat them easily. SCARY good at getting people to tunnel and commit too hard to trying to fight her and not realize it till they're already respawning. she'd main something aggressive but mobile so she can get away easy, like octobrush. oh my GOD would she be infuriatingly good at sharking. comes out of nowhere and you're dead before you can blink.

i don't think she takes the game very seriously at ALL, polar opposite of norma, so she never really tilts or blames anyone when she loses. it's just a loss. she might be a sore winner though. i can see her being the type to make fun of her opponents like LMAOOO look at this loser on the jet squelchers aiming at the ground 💀 who let this kid play

anyways her fav mode would be tricolor battle. shes built different like that. she's B+ rank and pokes fun at norma about it sometimes.

SAM BOOLE

sam is an inkling, she plays slayer. blaster main. she. is. terrifying. she's the one who averages like 20 kills per game. she's the one picking off anyone who dares to touch the rainmaker or step onto the tower or make a single power clam. she is an unstoppable force. i don't think it comes from a place of Intense Focus And Practice though. she strikes me as the type of player to sorta just zone out and have fun without thinking too hard about it, and everyone keeps asking what strats she uses to be able to pull off all the insane plays she does and she just. shrugs.

i think her and raz as a slayer/skirmisher duo would be a force to be reckoned with, like, you see these two together on the enemy team and you're DOOMED. coach oleander is so proud of sam's natural killing machine talent but also a little bit terrified.

her favorite mode is turf war cause it's nice and straightforward. her locker is one of the less mainstream colors like brown or maybe that dark teal color, and it's thoughtfully decorated with cool stickers and stuff. there's definitely one of those furbies in there. very eclectic decor but she makes it work for suresies. she's rank A+. i think she would play salmon run a LOT as well just cause she thinks the salmonids are neat looking.

GISU NERUMEN

gisu gives me more inkling vibes even though octoling might fit her hair better. seems like the kinda player who doesn't really care about weapon roles and just goes for whatever feels the most fun to play. i think she'd play reeflux! there's a lot of cool stuff you can do with that weapon and potential for lots of trick shots. she'd be sort of like sam and lizzie in that she's pretty easy-going while playing, but i don't think she'd be immune to tilting, especially not when they're 30 seconds away from winning and the other team pulls some insane play that completely turns the tables. she doesn't hold onto a loss for long though and she's pretty good about getting back on track.

she'd totally be the type of player to post a million clips of her getting wipeouts or narrowly escaping getting splatted or those aformentioned trick shots btw. she lives for those highlight compilation worthy moments.

i think she'd be around rank A+ and her favorite mode might beeee... tower control. her locker would either be super sick or she'd use it to do one of those silly jokes with the moai head.

MORRIS MARTINEZ

morris strikes me as an inkling type fella. i think he wouldn't really like the stress of the front lines and would rather play an anchor weapon. something swagful like e-liter. he'd be convinced that the song that plays during matches affects his performance. of course we lost, they were playing headhammer. of course i did crazy good that round, they were playing ska-blam!!! (i'm the same actually. i always play well when a yoko and the gold bazookas song is on.) he's a pretty chill player but definitely gets put off by spikes in difficulty and might take long breaks from matches altogether because "the other teams are way too sweaty."

he'd probably range from C+ to A- rank at any given time depending how much he's bothered to play that season. his favorite mode would be splat zones since it's one of the less crazy ones, easier to follow what's going on. while gisu would only maybe probably do a joke locker, morris would TOTALLY do one But. he'd also decorate the outside properly so it's both silly and cool.

ADAM JOSEPH GETTE

octoling. or frankly... if we want to get devious and break the rules... inktoling?!?!?! like morris he's not so aggressive, but instead of it being because he can't handle the front lines i think it would be that he just has more fun playing support. he'd probably main a few weapons, like n-zap '89, splat roller, and tenta brella. he would spend a loooot of effort putting good abilities on fashionable outfits so he can look just as fresh as he plays. he likes learning so he'd get an advantage in the game by absorbing a TON of information about the best ways to use specials, map strategies, weaknesses of other weapons, all that good stuff. he's the kinda guy that always shows up right when you need someone to cover you, and has probably saved a good amount of games by being on point with his support.

he's S rank so y'know he's kiiiind of a big deal... kind of a big shot... big cheese... top dog... he says this all jokingly but norma always fumes at it. his favorite mode? oohhh don't make him choose...they're all fun for their own reasons!! he'd spend lots of time decorating his locker, using the stickers to make funky designs with heavy consideration for the color scheme. he'd probably incorporate the newspaper-y mixed media style stickers from story mode in there somehow. it would have kind of a vintage feel?

Led by stoic prosecutor Hwang Shi Mok (Cho Seung Woo) and feisty detective Han Yeo Jin (Bae Doona), this well-paced, well-acted drama is full of twists and turns that will make you suspect everyone at some point.

Kingdom (2019; 2020)

Historical political drama meets zombie thriller in the 2019 hit "Kingdom" (Season 1). The story follows Crown Prince Yi Chang (Ju Ji Hoon) as he investigates an outbreak of a mysterious plague that turns average citizens into rabid monsters while fighting to keep his rightful place as heir to the throne. The hit series has led to a second season and a prequel TV movie "Ashin of the North" (2021).

Signal (2016)

Featuring a mysterious walkie-talkie that links the past to the present, "Signal" is one of the most beloved police dramas of the last decade because of its refreshing take on the genre and the top-notch performances of its three leads: Kim Hye Soo, Lee Je Hoon, and Jo Jin Woong.

The Uncanny Counter (2020)

"The Uncanny Counter" is a comedy-drama about four "counters", or grim reapers who have been lent superhuman abilities by a group of spirits. Their main job is to stop demons who possess violent criminals that become more powerful by consuming the souls of their victims. Funny, colorful, and action-packed, the show features wonderful performances from the main actors: Jo Byeong Gyu, Yoon Joon Sang, Kim Se Jeong, and (my personal favorite) Yeom Hye Ran. The hit series has been granted a second season.

Racket Boys (2021)

If you need a feel-good drama that's not too heavy on the tears, crime, and lovey-dovey tropes, then this may be for you. "Racket Boys" is about an underdog middle school badminton team that dreams to make a mark on the national level and beyond. The rural setting and endearing ensemble cast, led by the talented Tang Jun Sang, allow for lighthearted moments but are never too cartoonish. A puppy love storyline exists between the leads, but it's very wholesome and innocent, and given far less importance than the struggle surrounding the national tournament.

Squid Game (2021)

International smash hit "Squid Game" is about a mysterious organization that selects individuals with impossible debt to participate in a series of children's games to have a shot at winning 45.6 billion won. The catch: only the winner gets to live. Features an amazing ensemble cast led by Lee Jung Jae, Park Hae Soo, and impressive newcomer Jung Ho Yeon.

Dear My Friends (2016)

A slice-of-life comedy drama featuring a stellar ensemble cast of the most accomplished Korean actors and actresses over 60, "Dear My Friends" follows 40-year-old writer Park Wan (Go Hyun Jung) as she chronicles the stories of her mother, her aunts, and their families. There are two romantic side stories here but the overall plot is more invested in how your friends can become your family especially after you reach a certain age. Think "Golden Girls" but in Korea. Praise-worthy acting from everyone involved, especially the main quintet: Na Moon Hee, Kim Hye Ja, Go Doo Shim, Park Won Sook, and Oscar winner Youn Yuh Jung.

Live (2018)

"Live" is a slice-of-life, police procedural drama that tells the story of rookies and veterans at Hongil Station in Seoul, where there is no shortage of petty and violent crimes. The crimes featured examine the decisions that South Korean cops have to make especially in dangerous situations wherein the gray areas become even grayer. There are romantic storylines between the four leads but they never overshadow the cases. Wonderful acting, especially from Bae Sung Woo and Bae Jeong Ok who play the veterans Oh Yang Chon and Ahn Jang Mi, respectively. Also stars funny man Lee Kwang Soo and the angelic Jung Yu Mi (Train to Busan).

Vincenzo (2021)

Born in South Korea, adopted into an Italian family, mafia lawyer Vincenzo Cassano (Song Joong Ki) flies back to Seoul after falling out with his adopted brother following the death of his boss/father-figure. His mission is to retrieve gold hidden beneath the dilapidated Geumga Plaza before it is ultimately demolished by the evil Babel Group that constantly harrasses its tennants to move out. Teaming up with the feisty lawyer Hong Cha Young (Jeon Yeo Been, Vincenzo uses mafia tactics in his war against the conglomerate that thinks itself above the law. What sounds like a heavy premise is offset by the physical and witty comedy provided by the charismatic leads and supporting cast. There is romance between the leads (who share great chemistry nonetheless) but it is by no means the driving force of this story. They could have recasted this with two male leads as more of a bromance story and the outcome would be quite similar, but Jeon Yeo Been gives a unique, quirky flair to her character that makes her difficult to replace.

Hyena (2020)

I know I said this wasn't a list for romantic K-Dramas but hear me out. There's romance but it's not what you think (the leads kiss a grand total of 3 times, twice in the first ep then once a little later). "Hyena" explores the world of corporate lawyers who serve the South Korean 1%. It's a dog-eat-dog world where the most conniving and least picky hyena reigns supreme. The hyena in question would be the brilliant renegade lawyer Jang Geum Ja (Kim Hye Soo). Sparks fly as she goes head to head with the by-the-book, elite lawyer Yoon Hee Jae (Ju Ji Hoon), whose ideals are constantly challenged as his world unravels around him. The cases are challenging and the solutions that the leads come up with are intriguing. Romance doesn't drive this drama, but the chemistry between the leads is undeniable.

I have something of an idea of what the final Splatfest could be, and it's a central theme within Splatoon 3: the Anarchy Poisons.

The Anarchy Poisons are somewhat central within Splatoon 3, with the idols individual Splatfest themes referencing this. (Bird Mix, Snake Mix, and Boar Mix, respectively.)

The final Splatfest theme could end up being a "pick your poison" type of deal, where your choice will end up leading into the next game, whether drastic or not I'm unsure.

How this works is that the poisons are based off of the three poisons/unwanted roots of Buddhism, to which the rooster, snake, and pig (/bird, snake, and boar) are central symbols. And they represent three mental states: greed, hate, and delusion. Given there's already a theme of one idol going AWOL in the following game (the one who lost the previous game), this could lead into something interesting with the fourth installment.

I don't think it would be what we think though. Given this time it's be two losers and one winner, it may be something where the winner of the final fest becomes a bit too consumed by their own poison, so the two losing idols have to divise a plan to get through to their friend.

Though, then again knowing Nintendo they could pull something out of a hat, but I mainly say that it'll have to do with the three poisons because of context clues.

Previous final fests have had something to do with a hidden or implied theme within the game. With Splatoon, which Squid Sister did the population prefer? Who was more popular? Granted in Splatoon, it was the first game, and so they probably just picked the easiest of themes, but I feel like within the game there was always that question of who was more popular.

Splatoon 2, we understood the theme better as the game went on, and with the added addition of Octo Expansion. Pearl is a rich girl who's chaotic in nature, and seems to love the idea of new heights, new things happening. Marina, not so much. Because she's scared to lose someone she's so close to. Pearl if I'm not mistaken was the first person Marina met after she left her life within the Octarian army, so she likely feared the idea of things changing as a result. Thus, she wanted order to maintain her life as she grew to know it.

Now, back to the potential Splatoon 3 final fest. I'll say this too, it wouldn't be something like "Greed v Hatred v Delusion", the final fest would probably be something more like "Bird v Snake v Boar", which also represent the cultures they represent as idols. (Shiver being Eastern Asian/Japanese culture, Frye being Indian/Middle Eastern culture, and Big Man being Brazilian culture.) So, in all truth, it could be one theme shrouded as another, where in the next installment, the one or more of the idol poisons take over

Again, this is just speculation/theory, but I get the idea Nintendo may be sneaky with this final fest. And why not be sneaky with the theme right under people's noses?

Settling Arguments

{Mario and Luigi are fighting over a video game, their dad thinks they’re acting like children, so he decides the only way to settle this childish argument, is to challenge them with something childish..} “YOU CHEATED!” Luigi yelled.

“I won fair and square! You’re just jealous cause you’re bad!” Mario yelled back.

The bros were currently chasing each other through their family’s apartment. They ended up at a stand still at the edges of the dining table both trying to guess the other’s next moves.

“No! I had you weakened and you moved out of the way of my shot!” Luigi pointed.

“Sorry I know how to squid roll properly!”

“I do, too!”

“That’s why you end up doing a normal jump and get killed a lot huh?” Mario smirked.

“Whatever! Plus you held onto the rainmaker way longer than you’re supposed to, and ran away like a coward!”

“I held onto it and ran so I’d run the timer out because we already won!”

“No you didn’t!!! You don’t win until the match is over!” Luigi stomped his foot like a child.

“And guess who had the victory screen at the end? MY TEAM! SO BOOM!” Mario made an over dramatic boom gesture with his hand.

Luigi was about to make a run for Mario at the end of the table, when suddenly a hand was on his shoulder.

“What in the hell is going on here?” a voice said.

It was their dad.

“Mario cheated in a video game!” Luigi whined.

“I did not! You’re just a sore loser,” Mario replied, folding his arms in a kind of cocky gesture.

“Really guys? A video game? How old are you two? Don’t you have a job to go to?” Their dad said.

“It’s Sunday,” Luigi replied.

Damn, dad was hoping reminding them of their business would get them out of the house, but not today. He pinched the bridge of his nose between his fingers, and sighed.

“Come on, what happened to fighting like men?” he said.

“You want me to punch Mario?”

“No! I meant having an adult conversation. Since that’s apparently not gonna happen, though, and you’re acting like children, then you’re going to fight like children,” dad said.

Mario and Luigi looked at each other curiously.

They followed their dad into the living room where the three of them stood in the middle of the room.

“Now, when you two were young, y’all were inseparable, but you still used to fight about absolutely anything! Do y’all remember what I would do to settle arguments and give y’all a ‘winner’ between you two?”

The boys shook their heads.

“Really? It happened pretty often. So, what I did was sit you two on my lap, make you hold your arms up, and I would tickle both of you until one of you put your arms down. The first one to put his arms down, lost. And there were no and, ifs, or buts afterward.”

Mario and Luigi silently gulped a bit.

“Now, obviously you two are too big and old to sit in your papa’s lap, so I’m gonna change it up. Mario, stand here.”

Mario stood in the middle of the two.

“Lift your arms up.”

Mario did so.

“Now interlock your fingers.”

His dad grabbed his arms together, and Mario locked his fingers together in a fist.

“There,” his dad said stepping back, “you stand there, and keep your arms up as long as you can while Luigi gets to tickle the crap outta you!”

Luigi’s face lit up. He was going to get to tickle his older brother with no repercussions?! Oh yes! He practically skipped over to Mario. Mario gave him a side eye.

“Can I tickle him anywhere?!” he exclaimed.

“Yup! Anywhere you can reach. Now don’t get too excited, Lu, you’re next,” his dad threatened playfully.

Luigi got a bit nervous at this, but was quickly pulled out of it when remembering why he was standing behind Mario.

“I’m gonna start a timer. Mario, you can laugh, move, anything you want except for running and putting your arms down. As soon as those arms go down, that’s time. Whoever held them up the longest in the end, wins.”

“Got it, now can we get this over with? My arms are already getting tired,” Mario sighed.

“Sure. Start… now!”

Luigi wasted no time skittering his fingers over Mario’s sides up to his ribs. Instantly targeting his top ribs and armpits. Mario held strong for about two seconds before bursting out in giggles. He stomped his feet, and clamped his fingers tighter together. Since they were wearing their lounge clothes, there was very little protection for their bare skin. As Luigi tickled Mario’s armpits, he saw that his shirt lifted up a bit due to his arms being above his head causing his belly to peek out of it. Luigi’s fingers instantly gravitated towards Mario’s stomach skittering across the bottom of it that was peeking out.

“Waihihit! NOT THEHEHERE!!” Mario squealed as Luigi dove his hands under his shirt, squeezing his belly.

Luigi’s hands skittered across his tummy to his hips squeezing them gently. Mario doubled over but kept his arms above his head.

“Oh come on, you know you wanna protect yourself. Just do it. Clamp your arms down on my hands, it ain’t gonna hurt ya,” Luigi teased.

Mario shook his head, “n-NOT A CHAHAHANCE- EHEHEHEHE!!”

Mario snapped his body back up when Luigi suddenly went under his shirt, and back to his armpits. His fingers skittered and poked all over his upper body rapidly to keep him from getting used to any sensations. Mario could feel his arms slipping down, and he almost gave up.

“You made it past sixty seconds!” his dad exclaimed.

Mario shot his arms back up with newfound determination. There was no way Luigi would beat past a minute! He tried to make it longer just to make sure.

“LU! S-STAHAHAP THAHAHAT! STOP S-SWITCHING SPOHAHAHATS!”

“What’s wrong, big bro? Too ticklish, hm? If I stayed in one spot, you’d get used to it, so I gotta switch it up a bit!” Luigi smiled.

“I- I WOULDN’T HAHAHAHA! OH MY GOHAHAHAD!!”

His nerves were screaming at him to give up, but he was determined. That was until Luigi snuck a hand between his shoulder to his neck. Mario squealed, scrunched his neck, and recoiled. His arms came down, swatting Luigi’s hands away.

“TIME!” their dad announced.

Mario doubled over panting, his arms wrapping around his middle to protect himself.

“One minute and twenty seconds!”

“Whoo!.. b-beat that!” Mario huffed.

Luigi giggled but was visibly nervous. He knew he was going to lose this. Sure, Mario was pretty ticklish, but him? He was a walking tickle spot..

“Ha! Bet, I will!” Luigi scoffed confidently.

He took Mario’s place in the middle of the room, and raised his arms, interlocking his fingers. Mario rolled his eyes and grinned at this faux confidence as he stepped behind his little brother.

“Ready?”

“Ready.”

“And… go!”

Mario instantly dove his fingers into Luigi’s underarms. Luigi screeched and almost failed instantly, but shoved his arms back up.

The good thing about this whole challenge is they both knew each other’s tickle spots. Obviously after being brothers for years they knew exactly how to target each other. The bad thing was usually Luigi, being the younger brother, was the one to get tickled to pieces every time they had a tickle fight which would always just end up being “tickle Luigi.” Luigi knew where Mario was most ticklish, but he also knew exactly where Luigi was most ticklish, and exactly how to tickle him to make him completely succumb and go crazy. Perks of being the asshole older brother he guessed.

Luigi twisted in Mario’s grasp, but held steady. He screamed when his ribs were suddenly tased. God how he hated when Mario would do that. Just two fingers quickly, and harshly vibrating between his ribs were enough to kill the man. Luigi tightened his fists above his head. He dropped them onto the top of his head trying to lessen the sensations.“He put his arms down!” Mario exclaimed seeing his dad not react.

“Nope, they’re still up,” he replied.

“You didn’t say we could do that!”

“You didn’t ask.”

Mario rolled his eyes, and dug into Luigi’s tummy. Now he was determined to win. Luigi shrieked, and doubled over, but like Mario, kept his arms up. He held a leg up trying to protect his stomach.

“Ah ah ah, fratellino, no protecting yourself!” Mario teased as he squeezed his kneecap making him drop back down. Mario skated his fingers over Luigi’s bare belly.

“PLEASE I-IT’S SO BAHAHAHAD!! N-NAHAHAT MY TUMMY PLEHEHEASE!”

“Ohohoh yes! Is your tummy ticklish, Weeg? Got a ticklish tum?! Sucks for you!”

Luigi’s face turned bright red at the teasing. God, why’d that always get to him so much?!

“30 seconds till a minute!” dad said.

No way Luigi was gonna get to over a minute. Mario was not going to lose to the most ticklish person on the planet! Time to kick it up.

Mario squeezed Luigi’s hips as he began to walk around to face him.

“W-WHAT ARE YOU DOIHIHIHING?!”

“Oh nothing, there was nothing against changing positions was there?” Mario called back to his dad.

“Nope!”

Mario grinned evilly at Luigi whose giggles became nervous. He tickled up his sides then shoved his hands onto the sides of his neck fluttering his fingers gently. Luigi threw his head back, wheezing, and scrunching up. He was sure that digging into his shoulders would break him, but Luigi kept himself together. Even raising his arms back up fully.

“You passed a minute, Weeg!” dad exclaimed.

Oh he was not going to win this.

Mario thought fast, then quickly shoved Luigi’s shirt up to his chest revealing his stomach. Luigi felt the breeze, and tried to back away.

“NO! M-MAHAHARIO! DO NOHOHOT PLEASE!!”

Without hesitation, Mario grabbed Luigi’s sides to hold him where he was, while still squeezing them, took a quick deep breath, and blew as hard as he could on his tummy.

Luigi screamed then cackled as his whole body convulsed and his arms shot down trying to push Mario off of his poor ticklish belly.

“TIME!”

Luigi collapsed on his butt on the ground panting and still laughing hard.

“What did he get?” Mario asked practically running over to the timer on the phone.

“One minute.. and seventeen seconds!”

“YES!”

“NO!”

“I WIN! HAHA!” Mario pumped his fist.

Luigi pulled himself up from the ground defeatedly.

“Congrats, now if you’ll excuse me, I hear leftover lasagna calling my name,” their dad said getting up from the recliner.

“Wait! No that’s not fair, let me see-”

“Sorry, can’t hear you over lasagna!”

The boys were left in the living room. One gloating and the other sulking.

“Aw it’s okay Weeg, it’s not your fault you’re too ticklish for your own good,” Mario giggled.

“No, you came around front to blow a raspberry on me! You cheated again!” Luigi exclaimed.

“Ah fratellino, always will be the sore loser little brother..”

Luigi glared at him.

“I’m only joking! Come on, you know it’s not that serious. You’re not actually mad, are you?” Mario asked.

Luigi rolled his eyes then smirked, “no. But you should run.”

Mario widened his eyes, and tried to get up, but Luigi caught his leg.

“Whoops too slow!” Luigi gleamed.

Mario struggled to pull his leg out of Luigi’s grasp but Luigi was already locking it under his arm. Mario hopped on one leg, eventually stumbling down onto his butt on the floor.

“You good?” Luigi asked, making sure he wasn’t hurt.

“Yeah but l-let go!”

“Ha! As if. You deserve this.”

Luigi pulled off Mario’s shoe, and instantly scribbled his nails on his foot making Mario snort and fall onto his back instantly cackling.

Laughter could be heard from both boys for at least another hour before it quieted down.

There was no final winner.
