being honest i dont get jm using a award to say he misses tannie... we don’t know 90% of their lives but they are very close to the point of still sleeping together sometimes. and going deep if they were really a couple jm woudnt miss taes dog right? and even as friends he could visit it. unless its because of their schedule right... this kind of comment sometimes confuses me and haters will use it as “they arent close” lol. i just wanted to know your pov.
Judging by Admin 2's reaction, as well as some others in our asks, I have a feeling I was the only one with a more realistic expectation, or lack of expectations, as I waited for the BTS profiles to be posted. Based on last year's, I knew expecting something grand out of Tae, and especially Jimin, would just be me setting myself up for failure, which is what I think happened here.
But, let's discuss it.
I spent a solid couple of hours making an excel table last night that contains everything every member said about every member (sourcing 3 translators for maximum insight) to see if really what Jimin chose for Tae is so "bad" that suddenly people are sending us asks like this one, and another one I'll add later down the line. And the conclusion I've come to is that...what he gave to Tae, as well as Hobi and Seokjin, as awards are the only ones that have any actual emotional/personal connection to them.
With Namjoon and JK Jimin basically states the obvious--Namjoon is tall and JK has gained muscle mass, meaning nothing new or with a proper emotional connection was stated; to Yoongi he made the same request many other members have made, so a work connection, nothing inherently personal.
Now, compared to that--Seokjin teases him/them, which isn't new info, so Jimin asked him to stop or do it less, a valid request which I'm sure he also voiced to Seokjin outside of this FESTA profile and also shows a degree of personal connection; Hobi gets requested to not walk away after asking Jimin a question, which again shows a personal connection and that it's a reoccurring thing; and lastly Tae with Tannie.
Something I've noticed is that some ARMY, who are used to our western celebrities and draw conclusions about idols based on those parameters, forget that BTS are busy, like whatever you consider busy, take that and multiply it by ten. During his vlive with Hobi and Yoongi back in April, Tae said that they are much busier and their lives far more hectic than any of us realize. Taking that into account, and the fact that one of the members (I think it might have been Seokjin) mentioned they work at least ten hours a day for 360 days a year with practice, MV and CF filming, photoshoots, interviews, recording and working on music, meetings, and many other things we have no idea about, do you really think Yeontan lives with Tae full time? A dog needs to get walked and fed but if Tae is out of the house every day for at least ten hours, what would happen to Tannie? He'd just sit around at home alone all day which just isn't fair, so I'm sure Tannie lives with Tae's parents much the same way Micky lives with Hobi's parents and/or his sister, JKs dog lives with his family, Holly lives with Yoongi’s brother, Moni with Namjoon's, and years ago Seokjin had to give his sugar gliders to his parents because he was too busy to take care of them.
Based on that of that, I'm not sure how often Tae get's to see Tannie. Probably not all that often, to be honest. So, if Tannie's owner doesn't get to see him often, I'd assume Jimin gets to see him even less (if we work on the assumption that Tannie lives with Tae's parents and thus Tae could only really see him when visiting them or when they visit him, that means Jimin wouldn't be able to see Tannie just like that either, since that would be like intruding on family time, right?). And we know Jimin loves Tannie, so him using that award to say he misses him and is asking about him shows care and an emotional connection to Tannie. Do I think Jimin also asks Tae privately about Tannie? Absolutely. And still, while Jimin didn't give Tae the, I don't know, "hot body Award" like Yoongi did with Namjoon or the "person I love most in the world award" (which we should know by now would never happen, and if you expected something of that intensity level, than I'm sorry but you've set yourself up for disappointment from the start), he still drew a personal and emotional connection between himself and Tae, as well as the pet Tae loves dearly.
More below the cut:
Jimin could’ve asked about the other pets of the members, but he didn’t, he only ever really talked about Tannie, and here he does it again, so doesn’t that show that he has a bond with him, a closer one than the other members since they don’t/didn’t ask about him (except for Hobi that one time on weverse)?
Speaking of Hobi, am I the only one who finds it interesting and cute that he only drew little hearts for Jimin and Tae when writing down their awards?
Also, we have to remember that these profiles are for us, fan content (remember when Jimin asked Tae last year to post more pictures of Tannie on weverse because ARMY miss seeing him, so what if this is drawing a connection/parallel to that?), and not meant as the members “confessing” something to each other that they otherwise wouldn’t or don’t have the chance to do so. It’s not meant to be all that serious and instead just be fun and nice for us to read, show us a bit of their dynamic and that’s it, no world shattering revelations to be found, from any of them. Or do you really think Yoongi doesn’t like Jimin just because he told Jimin he’s trying too hard to be funny? It’s just part of their dynamic. Or that none of the members have anything else to say to JK besides commenting on his body/appearance? As for vmin, I’d like to remind us of this moment from their Friends subunit interview for FESTA 2020:
Whatever Jimin and Tae want to say to each other, they don’t need FESTA to do it, or us to be there as witnesses. Like Tae didn’t already say enough by telling us that 95z is love. Or Jimin by writing Friends.
From anon: because of you I came back da Namjin. I am a senior army and 2 years ago I left Namjin because I thought they broke up. You made me three Vmin but after what JK wrote about Jimin and after Jm himself about his chances I think that vmin are not together or Jimin withdrew. I think Jk would not dare to write about Jm that he has cute fingers etc if vmin were a relationship. it goes too far and confuses Jk too much. I don't want to say that J / k*ok is real because it certainly isn't !!!!
Now this is where I just sit and sigh heavily because it’s exactly what I expected and I will admit it irks me to no end. Let’s establish a little timeline:
Based on the FESTA Mission! BTS 4 Cuts Teaser that was posted earlier we can deduce that at least part of FESTA was already being prepared back in the first half of March, since on March 12th Jimin, Namjoon and Seokjin had their salad making vlive. Let’s suppose that everything FESTA related was prepared and written out by the members around that time as well. Sometime later BTS filmed YOU QUIZ followed by LET’S BTS and BTSxGame Caterers and everything else we’ve seen after that.
Or going a little further back to sometime in November 2020 while they were preparing for MMA 2020 and the Black Swan performance. We got the practice video today and if you pay attention to Jimin and Tae even there you notice that while Tae is waiting for his turn in the choreography, Jimin runs past him after his part is done (0:55) and they pat each other or do a “high five” or something along those lines as a way to cheer each other on. A very “we’re broken up” or “I will break up with him soon thing to do, right? Or in min-January when Tae posted seven pictures out of which three were of just Jimin after an ARMY on weverse asked if anyone had any nice pictures they could use as wallpaper for their phone. Between all that I’m having a hard time honestly finding any moment where either of them seemed sad or “cold” toward the other the way you would be and feel if the person you love pulled away from you or broke up with you.
If you are still unconvinced and still think that is what Jimin tried to communicate to us, would Tae really have gone on national TV and said he likes Jimin the most? And would Jimin have agreed that he likes him a lot as well? Or looking at the making video of their Kloud Beer CF that was posted today as well, would Jimin really be looking and interacting with Tae this way if he decided to end things between them?
Also, going back a little, your mention of Jimin reflecting upon opportunities/chances now that it’s a new year. My question is based on what you made the judgment that this comment has to be about vmin and not about something entirely different in Jimin’s life, or maybe something connected to BTS as a whole? Just because of him asking Tae about Tannie? Jimin, as well as Tae and the other members, have entire lives outside of just their bonds with each other, entire careers, passion projects, families, friend groups, and that little bit of time they have to themselves, so immediately thinking Jimin’s comment must be related to his relationship/bond with Tae basically makes it seem like Jimin’s life is a romcom or a TV show in which the only thing that matters is if the main character will date or remain in a relationship with character B or not, but life isn’t like that.
Personally it reminded me of something Tae said during their Bring the Soul documentary about how BTS had the opportunities to go higher faster but they decided against them. Perhaps Jimin’s comment was about something like this as well, especially since we know Jimin is a very private person and very selective of the personal things he shares with us and the ones he doesn’t.
For the FESTA profile JK decided to give Jimin the “Cute Award” with the explanation that his “Face, height, fingers are cute” which, honestly, is just saying something that a) is true and b) has been said in millions of ways by every member across the last couple of years. I don’t see what the issue here is? During one of the episodes of BTSxGame Caterers Seokjin said that Jimin is very cute and that he has a small, beautiful face, so really he even added the word beautiful in there, which JK did not, so what really is the issue here? The fact its JK, right, that’s where the issue lies, to which I ask why? On this blog we’ve already established that there is (in our opinion and based on everything we’ve seen and heard) no romantic connection between JK and Jimin (nor Tae), not now and not in the past either, so why is him saying that Jimin is cute (which he is known for even by people outside of ARMY, or like James Cordon calling him his cute baby mochi) is an issue but Seokjin or any other member is not? Either we use the same measurements for everyone or we don’t compare or make such assumptions about any of them.
What I find curious, because this does make it seem like you, anon, are someone influenced by J*k*ok shippers and their opinions, see an issue in JK saying that about Jimin, and how that’s “proof” that Jimin and Tae can’t possibly be together, and yet you took no issue to Namjoon basically saying he wants to give Tae an award because he is so handsome he is above every list or Yoongi comparing him to Michelangelo's David, both of these being much more superlative and grand complements/awards than JK saying Jimin’s face, height and fingers are cute.
It’s funny how things that Jimin and Tae have said about and to each other that make their bond very clear (I want to live with my lovely Taehyungie forever or here is my love for you while handing Tae a bunch of red heart balloons or 95z is love, a statement I’m sure he wouldn’t post if that sentiment weren’t mutual) are all questioned or ignored, but something as basically trivial as a comment about Jimin being cute is turned into a major issue. The mental gymnastics is fascinating.
Lastly, going back to the first anon and their mention of how haters will use Jimin’s Award for Tae as “proof” that they “aren’t close anymore”--why do we care? Like Namjoon said in the Mic Drop lyrics Haters gon’ hate. They will say a lot of things about a lot of things and even make things up if they feel like it to push their agenda, so really, regardless of what Jimin would’ve said, or not said, they would’ve found a way to twist it and make it fit their narrative. Besides, what haters think has no actual effect or bearing on what Tae and Jimin have with each other, and neither does what other shippers claim. Haters and other shippers don’t control the narrative, BTS do, and everything Jimin and Tae have shown us in 2021, as well as the last eight years, shows me that their bond has only ever grown stronger and closer and more beautiful and awe inspiring, even while haters claimed they stopped being friends years ago, so why should you or I care what they think?
Like Yoongi once said in one of his vlives about how haters can write all they want, he won’t read it while they will get sued.

Land of the Free
Song Mingi x reader
Part I Part II
Genre: fantasy au, fluff(?), angst if you squint
Warning(S): swearing (obviously it’s me), stealing (reader is a thief), alcohol mention (very slight), it became so long I had to make two parts so there is no real closure for this part :)
Summary: you arrive at a desert city, which is very wealthy, hoping to get your share of someone else’s riches; but you happen to get more than you bargain for when you meet a band of misfits, one particularly catching your attention
A/N: okay so I got this idea after re-watching the Thanxx MV (go watch it again right now instead of reading this) and I wanted to do a fantasy/desert kingdom type story! I loosely based my idea for the city off of Gerudo Town from Breath Of The Wild because it was what I was envisioning when I thought of this idea. It also happens to be missing Mingi hours so I wanted to write something for him. Enjoy!
Mingi had been in the city of Valsaem all his life; his great-aunt was the current empress and the Song family had long been deeply rooted within the nobility of this great city for centuries. This city, although located in the western corner of the Great Northern Desert, it was very prosperous in comparison to more southern/central cities of the world; Valsaem had one of the largest market centres in the world, as well as having an abundance of precious metals and gemstones, mined right from the Bronze Mountains themselves (so close it seemed the city was built right up against them). other than the extreme heat and miles of sand, some call it “the city of kings” as it is such a magnificent and elegant city, it seemed that it was only WORTHY of a king’s lifestyle.
But that was not the life for Mingi. Quiet and shy, he spent most of his time on the simpler things; he would stay in the town square and read stories of far away lands and adventure. When he wasn’t reading about distant lands, Mingi also had an interest in going to the marketplace and seeing all the new and exotic items that came from the places he read about; of course, he was doing all of this almost always with he crew of rambunctious friends (there were 8 including Mingi). Just like Mingi, they had been born and raised in Valsaem, and longed for adventure just as much as he did. You see, the boys didn’t seek riches or a stable life; they instead yearned for a life on the road, the thrill of the unknown and the means to travel the world without a care.
little did the boys know, it was closer than they thought...
----------------------------------------
I trudged through the gates of the fair city of Valsaem, finally getting my first glimpse at the so-called “King’s City”. The sandstone buildings paled in comparison to the town square; turquoise-tiled fountains, stall upon stall of exotic goods, copper pathways... this place was luxurious.
‘wow... I would kill to live here’ I thought to myself as I gazed at the ivory/gold palace, glimmering in the sun. I shook my head; I need to focus on what I came here to do; steal as much as I can.
You see, I’ve been a thief as long as I can remember, but I prefer the term “collector of fine goods that happen to belong to someone else”. I’ve been to almost every corner of the world, with nothing but the clothes on my back, sword strapped to my chest and my horse Calvin, whom I left at a stable 600 yards from the entrance of town. Sometimes life was hard, and I often went to sleep on an empty stomach with no roof but the stars above over my head; but I wouldn’t trade the freedom of that for anything in the world...
I jog up to where the stalls of merchandise are, and I see a beautiful woman with an even more beautiful ruby ring. I stand next to her and pretend to look at the sheepskin coats from the East.
“Have you ever been out east?” I ask her, sickly sweet smile plastered on my face, “It’s lovely this time of year.”
she looked at me cheerfully, “I haven’t! Me and my Husband are planning to go to Tabino next winter.” I move closer to her, making sure not to break eye contact and try to be inviting
“is it really nicer in the spring?”
“Tabino hosts this wonderful mountain bloom festival on the equinox,” I explain, acting as friendly and nice as possible, “But the winter is also very interesting because of the snow and ice.”
“are you from there?”
“Yes, actually” I lied through my teeth, “My father was a coal miner and I was born and raised in the Gaecil Hills; the name’s Nephan Beuter, and you are?”
I stretch my hand out to shake hers. As she introduces herself and shakes my hand, I slip the ruby ring off her finger and into my pocket. she then talk about her life (which I didn’t really care about) and I excuse myself without a fuss.
“like candy from and infant...” I mumble to myself; this was going to be easier than I thought.
---------------------------------------------------
“Come on Mingi! They brought wild-berries from the south and you know they sell out fast.” San whined, dragging Mingi behind him as he weaved through the crowds of people. When they got to the fruit stall, the rest of the boys were waiting there already, counting their coins.
“There you are!” Seonghwa sighed in annoyance, “what took you so long?!”
“Sleeping Beauty here had just woken up when I swung by his house.” San giggled and jabbed his thumb at Mingi, who was combing through his messy hair with his fingers.
“That doesn’t matter now,” Hongjoong dismissed and pulled the boys into the circle, “The seller is asking for 10 silver/Ibs and we only have 8...”
“Mingi,” Yunho ask grips his arm and pouts dramatically, “can you pretty please use your rich parent’s money for us to buy some fruit?”
Mingi rolls his eyes with a smile and pulls out his wallet.
“You know,” Mingi shakes his head and takes out the needed silver, “San and Jongho’s parents are nobility too.”
“Yeah but they cut our funds when they found out we spent 30 gold pieces on daggers from Sol.” Jongho replied and pulled out out said knife, “I think it was worth it.”
Mingi shook his head yet again, smiling at the antics of his silly friends; he hands the remaining 2 silver to Yeosang, who was holding the original 8.
“Mingi, I could kiss you right now!” Wooyoung gushes and puckers his lips. Yeosang skips over to the fruit-stand and buys the last portion of wild-berries.
With the fruit in hand, the boys go back to town square, where they sit by the fountain in the shade of their favourite palm tree (It’s the one to the left of the fountain, not the right, in case you wanted to know). The boys began to eat, while doing one of the best pastimes anyone ever thought of: people-watching.
“I bet he has been all over the place,” Yeosang said and pointed out a man tying us his horse outside a building, “Just look at all the stuff on his horse’s back!”
“Not to mention, horses aren’t really a big thing here in the desert...” Hongjoong agreed, popping another berry into his mouth.
“Look at her clothes!” San gushed and nodded to a woman in a lavender silk gown, “I think that’s from the Rinkan region...”
“That fabric and style is very eastern,” Wooyoung added, “But I think its probably closer to Tabino than Rinkan...”
“No way! Tabino has a specific-”
as the boys bickered about dress styles and fabric, Mingi’s attention wandered elsewhere; he looked across the square to see a young adventurer, clad in a cropped black turtleneck tank-top and tall brown leather boots (Specifically for horse riding). They seemed to have a large silver and black-iron sword strapped across their back and dark coloured bag slung across their opposing shoulder. They had (Y/C/H) hair that was styled like they had just woken up (Probably from the wind of the desert).
Mingi watched as they chatted to a man selling jade and ivory figures; they picked one up and examined it, talking to the seller about what Mingi could only assume was the figure in hand. as the adventurer tried to put the figure back down, they accidentally knocked over a couple other ones on the table with their arm, sending them to the ground. As they went to help pick them up and the seller was distracted by the fallen merchandise, Mingi watched as the adventurer silently slid the figure the figure they had been looking at into their bag.
“Mingi!” Seonghwa pulled at the boy’s shirt, finally getting his attention, “What are you star-”
“That person just stole something from that guy!” He exclaimed, pointing in your direction, “I watched them do it.”
“The person with the sword and (Y/H/C) hair?” Yunho asked, “What did they take?”
“A jade figurine from that guy’s stall.” he explained, turning back to where you were, except you had moved on and continued to walk down a street where more stalls could be found and disappeared out of sight.
“We have to go after them!” Mingi said and packed up the remaining berries, “We can’t just let someone steal!”
The boys looked at each other and then at Mingi, who was frantically tying the bag of berries up. Jongho sighed and stood up
“Let’s go talk to them at least first.” Jongho agreed, “besides, its not like we have anything better to do...”
With that, the boys were off, following the thief.
-----------------------------------------------
“wow,” I gush and get the attention of a young woman, “sorry to bother you but I think you’re just GORGEOUS.”
To be fair, she was a pretty girl; dark long hair, bright eyes and caramel skin. But I was talking more to the velvet handbag she was holding. It was covered in pearls and stitched with silver, not to mention velvet sold for a pretty price and there would be more money in the bag itself.
Jackpot.
“Oh?” she blushed and avoided my eyes, “Thank you.”
“What might your name be, angel?”
she introduced herself and I give as much charm as I can. I talk to her for a minute, but I can feel eyes burning into the back of my skull. I turn for a moment and notice a couple pairs of eyes on me from around the corner, before they disappear (obviously not wanting me to catch them spying). I turned back to the woman, who was too absorbed in her story about this being her first time here to notice my split attention.
“Hey, why don’t I take you to get something to drink?” I suggest, grabbing her hand softly, “I wouldn’t want a flower like you wilting in the desert heat and I know a place near here.” she smiles and blushes again, and agrees to come with me. I lead her away, but not without looking at the spies again before I lead her away.
Was I caught? Nobody ever notices me and I like keeping it that way, so it wouldn’t be that; maybe past ‘benefactors’ have finally decided to get the drop on me and hired assassins. I mean, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were upset, since I took their valuables.
“Wow this place is very interesting, just like you!” the woman exclaims, looking at the patterned throw pillows and decorative lanterns hanging from the roof of the bar, “why don’t you tell me more about yourself, stranger.”
“Oh of course, how could I forget,” I lied, touching the small of her back to lead her to a seat, “My name is Sulio Dagbar, and I travel the world looking for the greatest treasures.”
we sit and I grip both of her hands gently, before kissing her knuckles without breaking eye contact. She giggles and he face flushes as she sets her bag down beside her on the chair, pearls sparkling in the evening sun.
“but it seems I have found my greatest treasure today.” I smirk and the woman smiles and loooks at her lap embarrassed. I excuse myself to go to order drinks and approach the bar.
As I approach, I finally get a look at my followers, as the weren’t doing a good job at hiding from me; a couple of boys who looked to be locals darted around the corner of the entrance to hide from me and I can’t help but roll my eyes in amusement. I think that they wont be any trouble at all, besides, if I have to fight two-against-one, I felt pretty good about my odds, since I was carrying weapons and had experience.
I return back to the table with two drinks in hand before finally setting up for my big moment. just as I get close to our table, I trip and dump both drinks on the woman, who gasp and jumps up.
“Oh my dear!” I cry in fake surprise, “I’m so sorry, my sweetest.”
“It’s alright...” she softly accepts and stands, “I’ll go and ask for some water to help clean this off and in this heat, it’ll dry before nightfall! be right back.” She makes her way to the barkeep, leaving exactly what I wanted behind; the bag.
I pick it up and casually place it in my own bag, before making my way to the entrance. I leave the bar, feeling a tiny pang of guilt for that sweet woman, but she shouldn’t have trusted at stranger she had only just met today...
as I turned to go back to the market, I feel a tug on my arm, forcing me to turn around.
“Caught you!” The boy holding my arm shouted, He was short and had soft eyes, making it hard for me to take him seriously. He stood straight, giving the vibe of “I’m in charge, I’m leading this capture”.
“I can’t believe you went through all that work just to take from that woman...” His partner said while shaking his head disapprovingly. He was a bit taller, but much more built. That didn’t help his baby face though, as he looked to be a very muscular teenager.
“Oh yeah?” I yank my arm from Man in Charge’s grip, backing up from them, “believe it because I got what I spent so long on and it was worth it!”
“That makes you a bad perrrrson!” Man in Charge singsonged, stepping towards me, Buff Baby Face followed suit and came closer, making me back up.
“And I care because..?” I retort gripping my sword, making the both of them freeze, “face it. there’s nothing you can do to make me ‘feel bad’. now if you’ll excuse me fellas, I’ve got places to be.”
I take my hand off my sword and leave the two boys standing in the street. I turn the corner and- OOF
I’m met with a broad chest, knocking me onto my ass. I look up to see I’m greeted by 6 more boys, all staring down at me. A guy that looks like a big puppy grabs onto my bicep and pulls me to my feet, where he swiftly twists said arm behind my back.
Shit...
“LeTs TaLk To ThEm FiRsT” Another boy mocks; He reminded me of a panther, lean and sharp eyed, “Look how well THAT went.”
“Shut up San!” Buff Baby Face said to Cat Man, “I thought I was better than just busting in and making a scene!”
“Yeah well obviously they have no morals so we should have made a scene!” another boy piped up, throwing up his hands exasperatedly. He reminded me of a dragon from this children’s book I used to like.
“Guys, bring them over here.” a boy I hadn’t noticed left said while standing to the entrance of a secluded alleyway, “It’s better if we don’t draw attention to ourselves...” He seemed level headed and shy, but he had a very pretty face that I’m sure brought lots of attention he didn’t want.
“Yeosang’s right.” Man in Charge agreed, “Lets go.”
Puppy leads me to where Pretty Boy was standing and pushes me against the wall, so I can’t escape. I feel the boys wrap something around my hands before it tightens, restraining my grip. the turn me around and push me to sit on some nearby crates.
“So what now? you guys call the guards and they throw me in jail?” I ask nonchalantly, trying my best to keep up the confident facade even though I’m screwed, “That’s not really in the best interest of me so-”
“No.” He speaks up from the back; I hadn’t noticed more than a towering figure until now, but I now finally get a good look at him. He was wearing a periwinkle vest that showed off his muscular and tanned arms and well as loose fitting navy pants that looked expensive from the way they shimmered in the orange sunset. He had small and dark eyes and beautiful flush lips that were pulled into a thin line. He was also carrying a bag of wild-berries..? Weird.
But something about him made me intrigued.
“We make them return everything and let them go.” His voice was so deep, it made me wonder what it sounded like in the mornings, when it would be even deeper.
“But Mingi,” Puppy sighed,
so that’s his name...
“They’ll just steal more stuff!”
“I agree with Yunho!” the final boy speaks; he was shorter by comparison and had an unusually bright face, like he was excited to catch me, “The seller will think we associate with them and get mad at US!”
“Not necessarily Wooyoung, since we could just explain to them-” Man in Charge started but was cut off by Cat Man.
“Yeah but why would we waste the effort of doin-”
The boys started bickering and I suddenly knew that this would be my chance. I waited until they were a tiny bit more into their argument before quickly getting up and sprinting for the marketplace. I hear the boys shout and a dozen footsteps chasing after me. I twist and turn, trying to lost them but they have the advantage of living in this city and knowing the streets as well as my arms being bound.
Using a set of stairs attached to someones front door and a couple of barrels sitting on the street, I get up onto the big sandstone wall of the building and use it to escape. But these boys are crafty and I am soon chased along the walls, with all of them knowing the most efficient routes. I can see the marketplace from here, and beyond that the large gates to the edge of the city. I soon realized I’ll never outrun them and I’ll have to get out of the city if I ever stand a chance of escaping these boys.
Seeing my path I hop down off the upper walls into a roll before continuing through the narrow streets of the desert city. I’m almost to the edge of the city when Puppy and Cat Man appear in front of me, blocking my path.
“I’ll admit you were good,” Puppy smiles, approaching me. Dragon and Excited Guy block me from the other side of the street, trapping me in, “But not as good as us.”
“Well, You do have the advantage of my hands being tied,” I huff, out of breath from sprinting through the city. The boys step closer, and I take a moment to assess what my options are and there only seems to be one.
“I’d love to stay and chat, but I really have to get going now.” I say with some attitude and run towards Cat Man and Puppy; I use the narrow walls of this street-way to wall jump up and around the two boys before continuing through the twist and turns of the street by the gate. I can here the boys shout and Excited Guy laugh like he’s having the time of his life. For some reason, it made me smile.
I make it to an alleyway that leads to where the entrance of town is. From here its a straight shot until I get out of Valsaem.
‘almost there’ I think to myself and I get about halfway through when He appears, dropping down off the wall and blocking my path forward. Mingi stands big and tall, the bag of berries still in his hand.
“You’re close to the gate.” he states simply, “Trying to leave town?”
I can hear the other boys, who seemed to be a couple streets down shouting about where I had gone; they must have thought my end goal was the market...
I can’t believe I lost them and almost made it clear; except for Mingi.
But I could deal with him alone.
“Mingi, isn’t it?” I ask, although I already know his name, “Listen, I’ll give you a cut of what I earned today if-”
“I don’t want money!” He says sternly, making me flinch. He finally setting that stupid bag of fruit down and gets closer to me, making me instinctively back up.
“I don’t care about that, nor do I want any more riches than my family already gives to me!” He confesses, taking more steps towards me.
“Well, there must be something you DO want.” I retort, pulling against the restraints, “Let me free, and whatever you want is yours.” If only I wasn’t restrained, I could just threaten him with my weapon and get out of here.
But I see him falter at my words. He looks me in the eyes and I can see he is fighting a battle within himself. Then he shakes his head, coming closer to me yet again; he’s now in reaching distance of me, but my instincts tell me to stay put where I am. Something about the way he looks at me makes me interested in what he’s going to say and do.
“You’re lying to me...” Mingi almost whispers. I can hear the pattering of the boys feet, and I know my window of opportunity was fading. I look at Mingi in the eyes, as seriously and firmly as possible.
“I promise I wouldn’t lie to you,” I respond softly, not wavering even though I can hear the footsteps getting too close for comfort, “Let me go. Please Mingi, you have my word.”
He grabs my sword from over my shoulder and I feel my stomach drop. It’s only for a moment because he then turns me around and cuts the restraints from my wrists and hands the sword back to me. I wait for a moment sword in hand; Mingi watches me, seeing what I’ll do, wariness evident in his expression. Without thinking and unsure why I would, I put it back in its holster, hearing the muffled noises of the boys talking from a few streets away.
“When you leave,” He grabs my shoulders, face so close to mine I can feel his breath across my face, “Take us with you.” It takes me a moment to register what he said.
“Two streets down from here is a tailor shop,” He explains, grip on my shoulders tightening when the voices of guards are faintly heard; the boys must have told them about me when they couldn’t find me.
“There is a a couple crates of materials along the back of the building and you’ll be able to get up onto the roof, where its got big red sunshades that you’ll be able to hide under until nighttime. Me and the rest of the boys will meet you when the sun goes down and we’ll leave Valsaem together” he instructs, careful not to be too loud, “Do, you understand?”
I nod. I could have easily threaten him when he gave me my weapon and gotten away without owing him anything, but something made me not what to break my promise to this boy. Mingi let go of me and backed away, as we hear the voices and footsteps of the guards getting closer.
“What’s your name?” He asks, picking up his bag of berries he discarded early, “And I mean your real one.”
“(Y/N).” I answer truthfully for the first time in forever, “(Y/N) (Y/L/N)...”
“You told me you could give me anything (Y/N),” He says finally, reaching a perpendicular alleyway only to look at me in the eyes one more time, “Give me freedom.”
With that Mingi disappears and I’m brought back to reality by the sounds of armoured footsteps around the corner behind me. I run forwards until I make it to the front gate; Mingi’s voice ringing in my head and I stop for only a moment, right in front of my chance at escape.
Something about him draws me in. I can’t explain it; I’ve never needed anyone nor have I even wanted anyone. People cause problems and you can’t truly trust anyone besides yourself anyways. He probably is only sending me to the spot on the roof to catch me and send me away, since I don’t have any reason to trust him.
But for some reason, I do trust him; I think of what he said to me about giving him freedom and how I so easily could have just hurt him and escaped. But I didn’t do that, and I didn’t want to do that to him.
Maybe it’s because he has faith in me. Maybe it’s because of how genuine he spoke when asking me to take him and the boys with me. Maybe it’s the gentle look in his eyes that makes me walk right past the open gate and down the next road towards the place Mingi tells me to hide.
I can see the big pieces of deep red fabric stretched across the span of the rooftop and I make quick work of scaling the backside of the wall using the crates Mingi talked about to get up there and under the sunshades. There I sit and wait like a fool to either be taken and locked away or truly giving the boys their first taste of freedom.
---------------------------------------------
“Mingi! There you are!” Hongjoong say with a sense of relief and pats the tall man on the shoulder, “We have been worried sick about you! Where have you been?”
“I bet that pesky thief had our big softy hostage.” San grumbled, “They probably have left the city by now...”
“They didn’t have me hostage...” Mingi calmly sighs under his breath.
“I can’t believe we lost them.” Yeosang sighs sitting down on the fountain in the square, “I thought they’d want to go to the market where they could loose us in the crowd but I guess I was wrong.”
“Yeah, we didn’t catch them,” Wooyoung places his hand on Yeosang’s knee, trying to comfort his friends, “But you have to admit it was fun to chase them. It felt like an adventure!”
“I need to talk to you guys, in private,” Mingi declared, causing his friends to look at him with blank stares.
...
“Uh, it’s kind of urgent so if we could go now, that would be ideal.”
The boys walked to Seonghwa’s house, since it was the closest. The boys soon noticed Mingi was uncharacteristically silent; he seemed very on edge the whole walk there and didn’t even try smack the hanging sign for The Golden Cactus (A restaurant that the boys went to so often, you’d think they live there), which is something he ALWAYS did when they passed by.
They got to the house, just as the sun was cresting over the horizon and the sky started turning a dark purple hue. The boys sat at the table, picking at the remaining berries that had now been in the sun for too long and had become mushy. There was a silence that hung over everyone, the tension being thick enough to choke on.
“So...” Jongho started, “Is everything alright Mingi?”
“You seem shaken,” Yunho added, placing a hand on Mingi’s, “Did something happen? Did that thief threaten you?”
“Their name is (Y/N).” Mingi spat, “And I had them cornered in the alleyway by the Eastern entrance.” The boys were shocked that their shy friend had faced off against the thief alone, as the boys had all been convinced that they would be at the market and thought Mingi had assumed the same.
“What happened? Did they hurt you?” Hongjoong asked, worried that maybe they had scared Mingi.
“I swear when I get my hands on them...” Seonghwa grumbles.
“I can’t believe the audacity of some people! They are just terrible.” Wooyoung scoffed and folded his arms over his chest.
As the boys quickly murmured insults about you, Mingi finally had enough of them assuming the worst. He slams his hands on the table, causing the boys to fall silent; Mingi has never seemed this upset before and it was quite bone chilling for the boys to witness.
“Will you listen to what actually happened before you assume that they are a bad person?!” He says, annoyance laced in his voice. the boys silently nod before bringing their attention to Mingi, who told them about how you offered him something in return for him to let you go. He explained how when he cut the restraints and you could have hurt him, you didn’t and listened to what he had asked for.
“So what did you ask for..?” Yeosang asked timidly, trying not to upset Mingi again.
“For our ticket out of here.” Mingi stated simply, “I asked them to bring us with them when they leave town, which will happen at nightfall. They are waiting under the sunshades at Giselle’s and we are going to leave out the eastern gate” The boys are shocked yet again for a moment before a flurry of questions are throw Mingi’s way. He shushes them and asks for the boys to speak one at a time.
“What were you thinking!?” Jongho shrieks, “We haven’t prepared enough stuff to go out yet!”
“(Y/N) will help us, I’m sure they’ve been travelling for a while now and knows what’s important for us.” Mingi answers softly.
“So we will just leave Valsaem for who knows how long and follow around a THIEF, who is now wanted by the guards of this city?!” Seonghwa asks eyes wide, “Do you hear how crazy that sounds?”
“Not to mention,” Hongjoong protests, “How do we even know they stuck around to fulfill their end of the bargain?”
“(Y/N) gave me their word.” Mingi spoke quietly, looking down at his lap, “They promised me...”
“Oh, so we are believing the words of a thief,” San throws his hands in the air, “Someone who makes their living on LYING!”
“And how will we just suddenly pick up and leave? without even a word of goodbye to anyone?” Yeosang asked, thinking this idea seemed ridiculous.
“but haven’t we always planned on leaving?” Mingi asked, feeling his confidence seep away. He felt stupid for thinking that it was a solid plan; but when he thought of the life he had always wanted, he knew this was his only chance before it became a childhood fantasy. He was getting to the age where people expected him to find a job, plan his future and eventually settle down and start a life here. Once that happened, he knew he would be stuck in the King’s City forever.
“Yes, but not by the lead of someone so untrustworthy.” Wooyoung shook his head, “How can we know that they won’t lead us down a dangerous path and leave us to die.”
“Because I trust them.” Mingi says firmly; he stands up, making up his mind on what he is going to do. all eyes are on him as he places his hands on the table and leans forward at the rest of his companions.
“Haven’t you guys had enough?” He asks sternly; with the anger snapping inside his chest, Mingi finally lets go of all the things he’s been feeling.
“Enough of the same people, enough of the same places to be, enough of watching all the stupid people coming in from all over the place, wishing to get a glimpse of the world. We have never had the chance to go, nor have we had the proper knowledge or resources to truly free ourselves from this life of stagnancy. But now we finally have the opportunity to achieve what we’ve been dreaming about for years and I can’t let it slip away. I’m tired of just reading about the world and not actually experiencing it for myself; I’m tired of this shit city and the materialistic ass-holes that come here. I just want to finally do it, like we’ve always talked about...”
When Mingi finishes, the rest of the boys are silent, blankly watching him from the round table. Mingi shakes his head and chuckles coldly.
“I guess I’ll go by myself if I have to.” He states with venom in his tone, heading for the door, only to be stopped by Yunho, who grabs his wrist and pulls the shy boy towards himself.
“You wont have to.” Yunho says, getting up and giving Mingi a small smirk, “I can’t let this opportunity go to waste either, and if all else fails, we come back.” From the opposite end of the table, San stands up too.
“I don’t trust this (Y/N)...” San states, walking over to the two boys, “But I trust you, Mingi. I’m coming too.”
“Me too!” Wooyoung jumps up, “Besides, think of how fun it’ll be when we finally get to go out in the wild!”
“If this is the group that’s going, (Y/N) will need me to keep you boys in check,” Hongjoong goes to Mingi, patting his back, “I guess that means I have to come too.” Yeosang sighs and stands up, pinching the bridge of his nose. He chuckles to himself before looking up at Mingi.
“Fine,” Yeosang smiles, walking over to the rest of the boys, “I’m in. It’s not like I have much to lose besides you guys anyways...”
“Okay, lets do this then,” Jongho agrees, turning to San, “Mom and Dad are going to be so pissed that BOTH sons skipped town.” The boys looked to Seonghwa, who was stilling sitting, arms crossed and brows furrowed. There is a pause before the eldest finally speaks.
“This is insane,” He says, knee bouncing frantically and anger filling his voice, “I’m not just picking up and leaving everything behind on a whim!”
“Seonghwa,” Hongjoong approaches him and places his hand on Seonhwa’s shoulder, “Come with us. We need-”
“No!” Seonghwa shrugs Hongjoong off his shoulder, “I can’t just put my life in the hands of some bandit who traded our future for an escape route!”
The boys begin to detest, before Mingi shushes them once again. The mood had dropped, making the room feel cold. It wouldn’t be the same without Seonghwa, but Mingi knew that he couldn’t force him to go if he didn’t want to; even if they did, it would hurt his friend in the process.
“I know it’s crazy,” Mingi looked up at him and smiled gently, “You don’t have to come if its not what you want.”
They stood silently, before Seonghwa shifted in his seat and cleared his throat.
“You should probably go,” He says, emotion lost from his voice, “You told (Y/N) you’d be there by nightfall.”
“He’s right.” Hongjoong agreed flatly, clearly hurt as he steps away from his best friend, “Let’s get going.” as the boys shuffle out into the night, Mingi stops in the doorway before turning back to look at his friend once more.
“You know,” He says quietly, sincerity dripping from his tone, “I wish you all the best Seonghwa; It could never be the same without you, but I’ll be sure to tell you all about it when we get back over a nice glass of melon liquor.” Mingi looks down at his feet, before smiling up at Seonghwa again, only a hint of sadness present in Mingi’s eyes.
“Thanks for being a dear friend of mine. I’ll miss you.”
With the final goodbye, Mingi stepped out into the cold night, leaving Seonghwa at his big round table, to sit in silent solitude.
