always forget how much fun i find lineless digital painting until i do it again, for some reason i always expect it to be hell but then i get started and it's like,,, oh wait this fucks actually

this is about fifteen mins in, I did a simple sketched outline of the bulk shapes first and then blocked out the gist of everything with my paint brush, and I've just gone in and detailed the hands a bit (since they're a good starting place i think for figuring out lighting :3 <- has no idea what they're talking about)

I like to draw out certain stuff so that it helps with descriptions in the future; i have the worst memory so it helps to be able to do so. (More beneath cut)
Im so excited for moon's shadow form. Oh my god. Its probably my favorite thing right now.
Fun thing about it is that in this form he can touch you but you cant touch him. Something something you can be cast in shadow but you cant take it off yk? He's still light sensitive like this though, so if the area hes in isn't dark enough or he's hit with anything too bright he just reverts back. At that point he'd just have to rely on normal hand to hand stuff and his sand lol. The shadow form is just better for sneaking and speed. Really, he's some amalgamative idea of the sandman and boogieman. I thought it fit well with his whole "naptime attendant gone wrong" thing.
Sun's design, however, is more like if you mixed a cowboy, wizard, and gravedigger together. I made it a while ago on a whim with no intention behind it but then i ended up thinking "ykw would be so awesome".
The hat dips to cover the crescent side of his face (not intentional on his part) to symbolize his resentment towards moon and how he basically damned him to an hourglass. His eyes are easier to see bc of this which could seem more trusting (eyes are the window to the soul or whatever), but the thing is thats not normal for him (as we know) so it's meant to make him look suspicious and looming to 4th wall viewers. There's also the fact that i just thought it was cool too.
He also doesn't get a second form. Moon's sneaky and weird so i thought it would fit to give him some freaky thing iykwim. Sun, however, is a pretty "in your face" kinda guy, so his look and fight style is more extravagant and boisterous. Lots of swinging amd yelling and boom bang zap! Despite the showiness he's actually a longer range fighter. Mainly because unlike moon, thousands of years ago, he wasn't often one to get violent with his hands. His weapon is just obnoxiously large too though.
They are still one animatronic and their transformation is still triggered by light. Instead of an AI chip though (which is still in there but long dead), they live through the work of a soul. They're still physically inorganic but as far as spiritually they're as close as they're gonna get to being human. Their life and functionailty is derived from the magic itself, not the machinery. Like if for some reason they lost all their magic they'd just drop dead from a battery life long since drained.
The hourglass has a carousel-like design to it purely as reference to moon's level in Help Wanted 2.
Sorry for rambling so much but this is what i've got for you so far! I have a general idea for the plot but im tryna to make it more than what it is rn, so i dont wanna share too much of that just yet in case i change or completely toss away an idea.

"They're ready for you." Jake said as Tsu'tey thanked him.

hey uh actually its time for me to vomit some thoughts on ghostbat
i really do love all the content out here for them in the vein of like divorced-core bitchy snarking and whatnot its funny its classic fandom behavior so its got that nostalgia factor its real fun to see but (non derogatory) but! i feel like thats such a watered down way of observing them. a reflection of a reflection of a reflection if u know what i mean
like obviously this isnt a new thing fandom is doing dynamics get dissolved into the simplest, most consumable caricatures of themselves possible all the time. its like a rite of passage at this point. but there are truly so many fascinating directions you could take ghostbat in particular and seeing it dissolved into just. gesturing at the above paragraph. that. is kind of sad.
i think (and this is just my observations from reading batman the knight and vol 3 of batman inc) one of the keys to their dynamic that really gets me is how modern-era (for lack of a better term) ghostmaker is consistently chasing bruce's shadow. i would say most of his actions can be described as being motivated by a desire to understand and be understood by batman.
like. hes living in batman's shadow not because batman's reputation precedes him or because batman is more capable than he is but because there is something fundamental in batman that ghostmaker believes he lacks. it's a key part of the infamous pseudo-break-up-in-the-rain in issue 105 of batman (2016) when bruce leaves khoa for gotham: bruce says, “you’re sick. there’s a part of you that’s broken and you’re angry that it’s not broken in me.” and khoa is reasonably incensed by this and takes a swing at him. they devolve into a fight that ends with the agreement we saw dick reference obliquely in issue 104.
of course, this assertion is categorically false—bruce himself points it out later in the 2021 batman annual. ghostmaker discusses his latest take-down of a major portion of his rogues gallery and how his successful defeat of all of them makes him a fundamentally better crime-fighter/vigilante than batman since he’s doing it without any of the personal vendettas and attachments bruce has.
but the key is that in his recounting of his battle he inadvertently reveals that he does in fact have a connection with each of them: madame midas and kid kawaii in particular. madame midas took down his fathers business when khoa was young and we see in his memory that this is something that deeply upset him and something he never forgot. in his actual take-down of her he brings it back up when he delivers the killing blow (batman annual 2021). with kid kawaii hes visibly upset by her physical appearance being that of a child and regularly does his best in their fights to take her down in a way that can hopefully allow whatever child-like portions of her remain to be saved (batman 108). i believe one of his battles with her actually contributed to her creators having to put an emotional inhibitor in her since some of what he'd said last time they fought got through to her (batman 107/108).
and bruce points this out!! he's somewhat subtle about it, of course, but he points out that no actually, khoa isn't free from this fundamentally very human part of him that wants to help people because it's good and that wants justice for wrongs slighted against him. still in the batman annual issue, he says, “you spent years focused on a single crime lord. that dedication isn’t about glory or efficacy. there’s a reason why this victory matters to you. a reason why you care.” and khoa (after a flashback) gives an embarrassingly flimsy defense in response to this but it’s still very, very clear that he does, in fact, suffer from the same bleeding-heart syndrome bruce does—if perhaps not as intensely.
obviously i have my gripes and whatnot with khoa being tagged as a psychopath since it seems kind of flimsy at best but i don't know enough about aspd-spectrum disorders to really pin it as definitively good or bad but still!! still!! he does have the personal stake in vigilantism that he condemns bruce for having (not even touching on the whole phantom one/clownhunter arc). at the end of the day ghostmaker believes hes missing this unnameable quality of empathy/desire for justice and he thinks that's what separates him from bruce and what makes them incompatible as partners (vigilante partners but also like. take that as you will): it is not.
the reason they cannot work together is because khoa believes he is missing this part of himself and as long as he continues to believe he's incapable of these things he's never going to measure up to his ideal of batman in any of the ways that matter.
on the batman end of things i feel like bruce is most characterized (at least in the batman the knight era of their relationship) by his desire to see khoa “fixed,” for lack of a better word. he initially takes khoa at face value for things, so when khoa gives his whole "i’m a vigilante for the art, the drama" speech he believes him.
it's actually a very sweet kind of naivete—like, of course, why wouldn't khoa know why he's doing this? bruce is very clear in his convictions regarding his motives for vigilantism and he and khoa are at the very least intellectually matched, so why wouldn't khoa be honest? why wouldnt he know the reason why he fights? if minhkhoa khan, the ghostmaker, says he fights crime because he believes in the aestheticism of a job well done, why wouldn’t bruce believe him?
so it becomes a point of contention between them for a very long time because bruce believes this kind of selfish method/motive and the incompatibility between them because of it will eclipse any relationship they have and, looking at the notorious issue 105 rain fight, it technically has. in their first mini-divorce arc in issue 6 of batman the knight in which they have a fistfight in the snow and khoa leaves bruce after beating the shit out of him he spends much of the fight talking, again, about the artistry of crime-fighting and how he enjoys the challenge of it more than the justice. when he wins the fight, he stands over bruce with a gun and contemplates shooting him (contemplates being used generously here: he stands over bruce visibly anguished before dropping the gun) and his excuse for not finishing bruce off is just that it would be, “too easy" (batman the knight issue 6). again: bruce has no reason to question this—even in a brutal physical altercation khoa continues touting his vaguely hedonistic motives behind joining bruce’s crusade. there is no reason why bruce shouldn’t believe him.
its only when he comes back in issue 8 and leaves with bruce towards the league of assassins that we see bruce kind of begin questioning how true khoa’s cited motivations are. obviously he's still pretty deeply embroiled in his Woe: I the Bat am Alone theatre kid bullshit—“this can’t last. and i think we both know it.”—so he spends most of their time together more observing the idea of khoa he has in mind and convincing himself that anything he sees outside of his established framework isn’t real, but we see when they escape ra's and blow up a major league of assassins headquarters that the illusion is starting to slip (batman the knight issue 9).
in their one-v-one combat for the position of demon’s heir (demon’s heart in bruce’s case) bruce’s monologue switches out of his doom-and-gloom khoa and i are incompatible talk into more of the space we see him in around the issue 105 break-up: during their fight bruce says, “there’s nothing to you! there’s nothing there! you know what’s in me?! everything!” which is a less accusatory version of the 105 quote but still in the same vein (batman the knight issue 10). so we see bruce has moved past taking khoa at face value regarding his joy in “the artistry of crime-fighting” but he still hasn’t quite shifted further into recognizing khoa’s other/true motives.
the rain break-up on bruce’s end, then, shows a further evolution of his interpretation of khoa’s behavior: he believes khoa’s desire to continue working with him is founded from a desire to keep bruce on his level—an action rooted in jealousy over something he will never be able to obtain. khoa believes this as well since, as stated before, he hits bruce in the face immediately after it’s pointed out. but even then he is still taking what khoa says at face value: he still believes khoa is only motivated by his thirst for a challenge and that khoa wants bruce by his side more so he isn’t alone in his empty hedonism than for actual wanting of bruce himself. this informs his reaction in issue 104 after he and robin chase a criminal to singapore: after his undisclosed argument with khoa he is visibly upset over the state of their relationship but believes it irreparable due to the differences in their morals.
i think from there though, bruce only begins picking out the gaps in the mess that is khoa (that we see anyway) when khoa’s telling him about his grand exploits after they meet up again. while their earlier conversations (ie; batman asking ghostmaker to stay in late issue 105) definitely reveal bruce’s newer perspective on khoa, it’s really only the batman annual 2021 conversation where we see bruce make the jump to further filling in what khoa is (very loudly) not saying. another tumblr post also mentioned the scene being the first recorded mention of bruce saying khoa’s name after the rain fight—which considering the last time we saw him say it was The Fucking Rain Break Up Again, sort of thematically implies he’s reached another level of understanding with khoa.
so i’d say on batman’s end he very badly wants to understand khoa, but he’s also only just starting to realize that he doesn’t have enough of the pieces.
this got away from me tbh but the point being: ghostbat has more nuance than a lot of incorrect-quote-y type content has room for.

Rendering tips that hopefully don't sound nonsensical or vague <3
Gonna skip my "study the fundamentals" soapbox but Color Theory, contrast, and understanding how light works (especially bounce light) are your best friends!
Try not to over blend, especially with a soft brush/blur tool. This usually removes all the detail and little color variations present in the piece and essentially can set you back several stages in the rendering process. Figuring out how "blended" or "smooth" certain surfaces are compared to others is essential.
Frequently zooming in and out like a millennial trying to stay relevant on tiktok by making ads helps prevent you getting tunnel-visioned and helps with the tip mentioned above.
I'm a little freak and do almost all of my rendering on one layer immediately after sketching and laying down really quick flats. I didn't start that way tho! Doing your lighting in various different layers and layer styles first, and then merging them all to a new layer (do this with a "copy canvas" type of tool or even import the png of it to preserve the previous layers!!) and going in and blending on that, can help give a good sense on how the rendering process works.
traditional painting rules can and should apply! I had an after school art class in hs with some very wonderful teachers and one of the things that they taught me was to "only blend the outer edges of the colors". This helps with keeping color variation and detail., as well as preventing your colors from getting too "muddy".
if you're painting a person, knowing where the color variation in undertones is a huge help! Places like the rims of eyes, the nose, ears, neck, and joints tend to have a more reddish hue due to blood flow and whatnot! There are also "blues", yellows, and oranges, especially in the face!
I put "blue" because, once again, color theory kinda lowkey fucked up and does what it wants LMAO. Essentially if you have something "blue toned" on the body (save for veins) its typically a de-saturated, darker, and more "yellow"-ish tone then the original skin tone used, however even a dark, and muted magenta or even purple can give a similar effect! It really depends on the skin tone, and the colors that are surrounding it. Also different skin tones reflect light differently so that's important to be aware of as well!
Typically what I do is I use 3-5 "main" colors for a section that I'm doing. So lets look at this hand for a second

Since hands are very warm toned, I stuck in the red range and did very little variation in hue, to preserve that. So I have his natural skin tone as the "base", did a deeper and more saturated color as the "outline" to help me stay aware of my form. I have two shadows, a cool tone (where the twig would reflect light) and a warm tone (where the red of the hands would reflect). But I also used almost a neon red! You can see it a little bit on that thumb right there near the shadow. Sometimes having a (slightly-extremely) more saturated color can help act as a "transition" color. These also help with maintaining your contrast, preventing the colors from getting too muddy, be a function of bounce light, and help show the more "internal" hues of the body.
References can be a HUGE help (I used one for the tree <3) but keep in mind that they're there to give you an IDEA of what you're trying to make, not just be a 1:1 recreation (art studies are a different thing that I wont get into here)!
This shit aint easy and there WILL be an ugly phase or multiple but you gotta push through it! This also takes a long time to do so there's no shame in doing it in multiple sessions, in fact I recommend it, as fresh-eyes can be a savior to a drawing.

I always wanted to play thief but the first game looks so old and I'm worried it's clunky? have you played all of them, which one did you start with? :3
Short answer: play them all in the release order.
Long answer: there are 4 games total. The original trilogy:
Thief: The Dark Project
Thief 2: The Metal Age
Thief (3): Deadly Shadows
In which the first two games, TDP and TMA, are the ones that are considered The Classics. DS is like the least favorite child, but something something the poorest billionaire. The trilogy's lore and plot are interconnected, but each game is its own finished slice of story. Also TDP and TMA were made on the same engine (therefore look and play roughly the same), while DS is more "modern".
The fourth one is a 2014 reboot called simply "Thief".
It very vaguely references the og trilogy here and there in form of easter eggs and vague many-many-years-ago's, but otherwise is its own game that can be played without touching the other three at all.
Personally, i 100% recommend giving the og trilogy a try, and playing the games in the release order. The trilogy is indeed old and somewhat clunky, but nonetheless holds up amazingly even to this day. I first played Deadly Shadows like 15 or so years ago, then Thief'14 on its release (loved both a lot), and only got to The Dark Project and The Metal Age a couple of months ago. And honestly? I liked TDP and TMA more :^) They're just incredibly solid games in every aspect, and the amount of good they offer - level design, art direction, sound design, core gameplay loop, and whatnot - outweights the clunk by a ton.
As for Thief (2014), it's what i'd call a good stealth game, but not a good Thief game, if that makes sense? I enjoyed it a lot (the art direction and the way Garrett's hands are animated are *chef kiss*); you might as well skip straight to it if you don't feel like figuring out how to setup/play the trilogy. It's just, well, not the Thief that everyone talks about.
Here's some useful technical stuff if you decide to try the trilogy:
Thief: The Dark Project has a "definitive" version called Thief Gold. Gold features a number of alterations to original missions, as well as includes several completely new missions. So go for Gold.
There's an unofficial patch for TG called TFix, which is pretty much mandatory for installation. TG does not have built-in subtitles, there's a patch for it as well. Also the wiki and TTLG forums have pages with transcriptions for all briefings, in-game texts, dialogues, etc.
TMA has a similar patch called T2Fix, which among other things adds english subtitles directly into the game.
Upd: a good advice in the comments, TDP/TMA's default control scheme is weird, definitely re-bind the controls.
Thief: Deadly Shadows requires Sneaky Upgrade to be playable on a modern pc. Also you can edit/fix a lot of stuff by simply fiddling with .ini file in the game's folder, everything in it is neatly labeled.
Also if you end up not liking TDP/TMA's sort of clunk after all, i still recommend giving Deadly Shadows a try, since it was made on a more modern engine and you might like it still. And it features one of the best horror levels in gaming history, which even has its own wikipedia page :^)

UPD: after playing the trilogy go play The Black Parade. It's a huge, masterfully crafted unofficial campaign for TG which acts as a prequel to the trilogy and greatly expands the City lore. Has built-in subtitles, but a patch is required to display them.

Do you have a tutorial on how you did those color swap recolors?
I don’t have a tutorial, but I can tell you what I did!
First I got images of the characters I wanted to work with, usually from about waist up. I could’ve done full body, but it was just easier to make them smaller
Then I put them in my drawing software and adjusted the colors to counteract the lighting in the scene. I worked with a lot of V7 screenshots, so I had to get rid of a lot of blue lighting. Once the colors were adjusted, I eyedropped the ones I’d need into a separate file for ease of use later
To prepare an image to be color swapped, I would edit them (to the best of my ability) to remove their weapons from the picture. It just made it easier
The Final Step!! (Drumroll) I turn down the opacity of the image I want to use and trace down over all the lines with a like… 1.5 pixel brush. This gives me clean lines to work with for paint bucketing and what not
And that’s it! Everything after that is just decisions about which outfit colors go where. I also left the original image under the new colors, so I could use refer back to how the shadows fell acros skin and clothing and whatnot (and for the background lol)
So yeah. That’s how I did it

Knives head-canon time
Ok so I have a shit ton of ideas that have poured onto me ok. And I’m here today to spill my brain rot onto you guys because you’re all filthy like me.
I like the idea that if Knives has a significant other (this ties in with my former post about plants and whatnot) all they have to do is say his name and he’ll be by their side in an instant. Like, he lives in this big ass tower, right? So, naturally it takes forever for him to get anywhere. But let’s say he’s bridged that emotional connection (reference to that here) and because of this, it’s like a trigger for him. I’ll write a quick example.
(Ex. Knives is out on another one of his missions to steal a plant. He does this often and he tends to leave you at the tower with Con’rad. You like the old man’s company, he can be nice to talk to, but you can’t help but worry about Knives. As you sit in your room thinking to yourself, you step out into the balcony to get fresh air. “Please be okay, Knives.” You mutter to yourself as you shake your head and lean on the railing. Suddenly you hear his voice behind you. “I am perfectly fine.” You scream as you turn around and look at him. “Where the fuck!?”)
It works two ways. If you say his name in the context of wanting to see him or needing him he can just like feel it. (I’ll write an example of that below as well.) immediately he’s by your side. There’s no explanation to it, it’s just like he steps into the shadow realm to fast travel…I don’t know. But then there’s just mentioning his name in passing conversations, in those cases it doesn’t happen so it’s not like you have to watch what you say.
(Ex 2. Knives was just feet away from the dying plant, his blades began to slither towards it, carefully but firmly wrapping around it. “Please be okay, Knives.” Your voice rang through his head suddenly and there was a tug inside of him. In the blink of an eye, without hesitation, he found himself standing beside you on the balcony of the tower. “I am perfectly fine.”)

His name is Akira Amano, and he’s 23 years old (so a year older than Shigeru in this au), and he goes to the same college as Yaldy, and the two DESPISE each other, but they chill w/one another because lets be real, they’re all they have at school 💀
I think I want Satanael perusing a law degree, because it’s a reference to Ren, who probably wants one too.
But Akira isn’t all stern and whatnot, he’s actually a big goofball, who relentlessly teases and pokes fun at Shigeru just to get on the other’s nerves as payback in this new timeline, Akira deeply misses Ren, but Ren…doesn’t exactly like Akira, he thinks he’s weird and that breaks Satanael’s heart so much because he used to be Ren’s other half, but don’t worry, Akira becomes a cool uncle/second dad in no time
Akira and Shigeru both follow the PT’s in the metaverse this time (and yes, I’ve decided for no bird yaldy in this au, im sorry 😭) BUT TO MAKE UP FOR NO BIRD, AKIRA DRIVES A MOTORCYCLE IN MEMENTOS (He purposely tends to jerk around and crash to piss off Shigeru, who is scared for his life at times because of how reckless Akira can be)
Akira fights in the metaverse with a sword and a pistol, and I’ve decided Shigeru will use a golden bo staff and a sniper rifle, because both of those things are cool as FUCK, and the two will take the place of a fallen teammate if enough PT’s have fallen in battle and will also snipe/beat up a shadow at random times too

Now I’m imagining Satanael as like a cool biker dude older cousin who’s home from college and it’s the first time you are seeing each other in three years. Yeah. I have a very specific design in mind but no creative energy or time with which to draw it.
I am vividly imagining the motorcycle incidents. Vividly. Might make that the potential one shot? (The one shot is on the list of things I wish to write. Eventually. When I get there. Writing is hard.)
Thanks for the birthday wishes! I had a fun one (even if most of my celebrating won’t come until much later.) (Pro tip: make a wishlist if you have friends who have no idea what to get you as a gift, it makes it way easier for them to decide and they’ll know for sure what they’re getting you is something you’ll like.)

Rules and other relevant information(Mobile view)
Rule 1. I'm not at all selective with who I'll role-play with. I'd prefer mutuals, naturally, but I think if we're interacting with one another that'll come with time so I won't harp on it. I don't care about your writing length but just know sometimes I can get carried away with mine so be warned. I also don't mind doubles! Mario and Mario, Mario and Dr Mario, Shadow Mario, whatever variation is welcome. I don't do exclusivity with muses either(unless discussed). Also, I don't mind role-playing with anons either. Basically, my blog is a free-for-all. Random anons, random asks for the hell of it, go for it.
Rule 2. Personal blogs are welcome here. I'll be reluctant to follow them though as I like to keep my dash a certain way. Should you rp from a side-blog then you know what to do: lemme know.
Rule 3. This blog is multi-ship and multi-verse(ew dirty word). The main verse of course has continuity between threads so keep that in mind if you see Mario mention or otherwise reference your muse and events that happened surrounding their interaction. Verse exclusive interactions will be tagged properly. Posts without a verse tag are to be assumed main verse.
Rule 4. This is a personal mish-mash of everything Mario: the games(mainline and spinoffs), comics(Super Mario adventures primarily, Super Mario-kun is lightly followed) and the cartoons. The recent Super Mario bros movie is an origin story and I'm not sure if I'll make a verse for it yet as Mario is fresh to the kingdom and hasn't been on any adventures yet. I have headcanons that I toss into my interpretation of Mario and I'll be getting a headcanon tag going soon along with updating these rules with said tag for ease of access. I say all that to say that if I do something that you may consider off-color for Mario let me know! I take criticism. Love it actually.
Rule 5. I will reiterate: there is no set way to begin interaction. Toss me a random ask, random starters are also accepted, and my starter calls are always open(might make a perma one, who knows). My messages are open for plotting purposes or general shenanigans. Discord available upon request and I also rp there as well.
Rule 6. I will not be writing any smut. It makes me uncomfortable to try and think of Mario in that light. Sorry. No italian sausage.
Rule 7. Relationships aren't just romance. If you see potential for an ongoing friendship, maybe frienemies, partners in some grand project, let's get to working those deets out.
Rule 8. I personally don't consider much "read-more" worthy but triggers will be tagged. They won't be in the same style as my other tags, simply "tw:wires" or something.

alright had to ask, what is it about australia or living here that you don’t like?
Okay, I apologise but this might be nonsensical (and totally political). Also, I get pretty heated in some of my discussion. Please know that it is not directed toward you, this turned into something of a vent/rant.
I point out the obvious right now based on current events, how Australia failed our Indigenous population by the "No" votes succeeding in the referendum for the Voice, and how disappointing that is. Let me paint a quick picture of what it looked like the day I voted: outside the town hall, there were three elderly folks holding signs and loudly telling my father and myself to vote no right on the steps of the entry. We walked straight past them to the one lone old woman who had pamphlets for the yes vote in hand, heads held high, and took two pamphlets with grateful smiles. I come from an immigrant family on both sides. This land was never ours. At least half of my heritage is made up of people and cultures that my British ancestry have historically oppressed too. The Indigenous peoples of this land are the rightful caretakers of it and always will be, no matter the people that come here. I gladly voted "Yes" and would have done it hundreds of times over if I could.
Unfortunately, it seems my long-standing suspicions have come true: many Aussies can be some of the most ignorant, lazy bunch of tall poppy syndrome mob-followers I have ever had the displeasure to know. Many voted against the referendum simply because they were uninformed and misinformed about it. I'm sure there's a great number that just did not care, because "what's it got to do with me? What if it affects my life negatively? Just say no to change to be safe and be done with it." It is appalling to me that apparently so many people are willing to just bury their heads in the sand and call it a day; not doing the research, not inquiring, not even appropriately weighing up multiple reliable sources to determine how best to vote. This is not their country. If I could, I'd tell those who voted "No" to leave it. Just leave. "Go back to your country" and I don't give a fuck if they were born here since this is the kind of argument white as hell ignorants tell every one who doesn't fit their picket-fenced lives.
Because that's what Australia feels like to me. Just another version of that illusory "American dream". We follow the footsteps of America in a lot of things, I've noticed, particularly in politics and media. We have more freedoms, yes, but how long will that last? I do not trust this country, especially now. We cannot seem to escape the ghosts of British colonisation either.
And do you know what I have also learned while researching Britain for many years (primarily for writing purposes and settings)? Australia is pretty much a watered down version of it, from our houses to our laws. It makes sense. But we are a pale, ugly shadow. Australia was built on by and for the convicts, not European elegance. I keep seeing in my mind the country town I used to live in. Those houses are uniform, old things commissioned for the immigrants and whatnot that came to work at the power station and mines. You can see echoes of English culture. But that's just it. Only echoes. That is Australia. I do not see anything recommending this place even aesthetically, anything particularly unique. In Victoria it's dark and rainy and can get icy, and you're basically in Britain. Melbourne is New York, as @faithfromanewperspective has pointed out, and so we are also American-influenced. Queensland has been referred to as "the Florida of Australia" by Americans and Canadians I've met. Everything contemporary Australia seems to be, is just a melting pot of Western culture. Our own politicians laud that we have so many different cultures from all across the globe, but I do not think some people realise that Aussies are not an accepting people historically, and many of those who were around when immigrants from Southern Europe and the Middle East first came here for work in the decades that followed the world wars are still alive and still allowed to vote and campaign.
And look, I'm almost definitely not the first person to point any of this out. But it's all this knowledge that's been a thorn in my side for a great deal of time. I cannot truly like or love Australia, not when there is also all of this.
Onto more minor things: the public transportation? Pretty good, I can't really complain, and it's especially good in Victoria. The weather? Can be really nice in certain parts of the country. We so far have not reached the insanity that is America, and we fortunately have no border-neighbours to war with (though I admit we are neglecting our Islanders and their well-being in at least a few ways, and I think we may be able to expect rising tensions after the "No" votes won). Personally? I prefer colder weather and would move from here if I could -- maybe in future -- back down south or overseas. Our environment can be beautiful, thoroughly enjoyable and peaceful, but the bush and even rainforests are not exactly my favourite. There's something so dry and alien, even about the plants here. And the rainforest/tropical areas here are good for carnivorous plants, which I tend, but the constant weather changes haven't been very kind to my bones (or to my plants, actually, and I have to wonder about the role climate change is playing in making the environment increasingly harsh, even for Australia). Also, I hate humidity. The air? In summer, it makes you wonder if there is air. I've had panic attacks because I feel like I can't breathe, that everything is too thick, too close, too everywhere, if that makes sense (keeping in mind I have water-related trauma). I don't like that places outside of the cities have such small Balkan populations and so I struggle to meet many people with the same life experiences and culture that I do, which makes carrying on language and traditions passed down in my family feel like a losing fight. Really, I just do not want to live here in Australia. It is both home and not. If I have to stay here, I'll go back to Victoria or might even try out Tasmania (gone on trips there, but have not lived there before). But that's if I truly have no capability of leaving the country.
One more thing: something about the places I seem to live in this country is very anti-knowledge and learning. Especially Queensland when compared with Victoria. Everything is so fitness and sports heavy, there is simply a general lack of respect for education. I'd talk more on this but I've run out of brain juice.
Anyway, that was my long-winded, rambly rant of things I don't like about Australia and living here. I'm pretty sure I have more to add but this is mainly the stuff at the forefront of my mind currently.

LYAM GREW UP IN THAT PLACE YADA YADA. WELL ONE DAY. AFTER THEY’D BEEN THERE FOR UPWARDS OF 20 YEARS, ONE OF FONTAINE’S DIVERS NOTICED THEM AND WAS LIKE “erm??? i dont think this is legal hello are you supposed to be here????”
cue lyam being put on trial & boom technical first meeting with neuvillette. gotta be honest the entire thing was kinda boring bc it was all blown out of proportion just for lyam to be like “well i was born there, & none of you said anything till now” kinda thing. ANYWAY. since they were technically not guilty of a trespassing crime, they weren’t sent to meropide, but they were guilty of reading old documents that no one was supposed to see. (which wasnt what the trial was for so its not like anyone could do anything but whatever. anyways) instead of sending them to prison, neuvillette gave them a job :3 “work off your crimes” and all that. they’re technically a general investigator, bc they’re way too observant for they’re own good, but what they were really there for is to research this place ↴

as for their dynamic, its so simple in retrospect but actually very hard to word. but it’s basically like?? rather than a relationship that was initially built on friendship or whatnot, its built solely on trust and understanding. both of them feel outcasted, despite technically having a place within fontaine’s borders. so its like “if you and i are outcasts together, its less lonely”
plus both of them have a stronger connection with hydro than other people. neuvillette because he’s literally the sovereign. & lyam bc they grew up in the water (probably too close to the primordial sea but they’re not from fontaine so its fine). so they also have that natural pull to one another.
they’re also very quiet individuals, but lyam also does have wriothesley’s exact sense of humour, but they just have this perpetual seriousness about them so everyone thinks they’re actually insane. (it makes neuvillette’s days a lot more interesting though so it’s okay :3)
ANYWAY. they’re a comfy couple. always got each other’s backs, even when the other doesn’t realise. always aware of each other. bc hey. they’re each other’s person. they gotta.
ALSO IF I CAN GIVE A HC ON THEIR WORK RELATIONSHIP REAL QUICK— lyam is kinda like neuvillette’s shadow :3 (im still working on their kit, but hypothetically speaking they’d be a buffer/support & a sub dps for him. & any other dps really). no one ever really sees them unless they have to, or unless lyam just feels like it. but they don’t want neuvi taking on cases himself, bc he’s too important for that 🤷 so they do it 🤷 (bro’s the grim reaper /j)
ANYWAY (x2) SPECIAL HC TIME
i hc neuvi to have VERY sensitive hands (sorta why he wears gloves, apart from just gen appearance). so he rarely lets people actually hold his hands, but lyam gets to have that privilege :’3. they give himb small hand kisses & cradle them so gently. plus, they just love holding hands in general, so they’re grateful that he trusts them sm T_T

despite his looks, he has good intentions (probably). all teeth and no bite (except when he actually does). smokes like a chimney when he's stressed (that's the joke, he's always stressed).
he's an inventor/programmer, and thanks to metal, a little bit of a mechanic at this point too. i wouldn't consider him a particularly empathetic or intentionally-kind person, but some would argue his actions suggest otherwise.
a prime example of this being he is more or less responsible for why shadow/metal have a house where they do, given it's also where he himself lives. shortly after he'd taken in metal for repairs, shadow tagged along; he saw the place looks like permanently-night with electric blue nebulas, got a tad emotional about it, stayed the night. caretaker provided him a comically oversized blanket and a suggestion: go seek out the city owner tomorrow and request housing here.
so he did, and it was approved. caretaker here's quite close with the city owner, so he may or may not have put in a good word in advance.
metal, despite seeing him as a caretaker, still ended up "moving in" with shadow instead. caretaker's not exactly one for permanent company in terms of sharing his house long-term, so it worked out for everyone.
above all else, i'd consider him to be hospitable, but ultimately self-interested when you pull back the curtain. he's not a bad person, but he's not exactly a good person, either. he's just learned how to present himself as a fair balance, and occasionally the situation's just right to inspire what empathy he is capable of and directs it into bettering someone else's circumstances.
metal, being a robot, is the ultimate example of this: caretaker relates a whole lot more to machines and whatnot than others. he views metal as some kind of family first and foremost, and something like his own greatest project second.
when they're synced, metal absolutely refers to him as "father" by pure reflex. caretaker lets his slide; it's not really something metal can control, anyway.

Clash of FE Classes Opening Round - Match 6

introductions to the classes, other closely associated classes, and explanations under the cut
Pegasus Knights are units who fly on a pegasus's back, typically wielding lances and promoting into sword- and lance-wielding Falcoknights (who still ride pegasi, not... falcons). a number of classes in the family have also dabbled in magic along the way, whether it be healing staves or tomes (the latter being typical of Dark Fliers). fast and extremely mobile, but low on durability and vulnerable to bows, Pegasus Knights can be challenging to utilize properly, but also highly rewarding. they also typically have the highest Resistance out of any physical melee class around, making them worth fielding against strong magic users. Pegasus Knights and their ilk are almost always exclusively female characters, with the series's lore conteding that pegasi take poorly to male riders. (there seems to be no particular indication of how well they take to nonbinary people, but Nergal's genderless morphs from Blazing Blade can appear as Pegasus Knights, so make of that what you will). the rare exception to this is the Sky Knight from Fates, although their mount is -- varying, best as I recall, on which side of Treehouse's handiwork you're on -- described as either a rare breed of pegasus, or a creature related to but distinct from the pegasus. closely associated classes include the Harrier from Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, who also goes on pegasusback; and the Kinshi Knight from Fates, as well as the Griffin Knight from Engage, who splurge on new mounts. Elincia and Hortensia each have their own unique pegasus-riding classes.
are they Wyvern Riders and Wyvern Lords, or Dracoknights and Dragon Masters? the answer is not consistent across the series, as aren't the translations. and as aren't, for that matter, their typical weapon types; historically, they've wielded lances primarily and sometimes swords, as Pegasus Knights do, but Path of Radiance gave them axes as a new secondary weapon, which then became their primary weapon in Radiant Dawn, and this has since remained that way. whatever it is exactly that these people are riding, though, they're as mobile as Pegasus Knights and a lot more durable to boot, which consistently makes them powerful and versatile units -- although their Speed isn't always up to snuff, their Resistance can let them down, and they usually still take heavy damage from bows. closely associated classes include the Wyvern Knight from Sacred Stones (who is on a different mount than that of the Wyvern Riders and Wyvern Lords of the same game, thanks treehouse); the Dragonlord from Radiant Dawn; the Griffon Rider from Awakening; and the Malig Knight from Fates. Ashnard from Path of Radiance, as well as Ivy, Zephia and Zelestia from Engage, all have unique wyvern-riding classes (although it's, uh, definitely not a wyvern that Ashnard rides...).
Maneketes are mostly human-looking, but look out -- they can shapeshift into mighty dragons! and they fight in this altered state, eschewing weapons of metal, wood, string and whatnot -- who needs those when you're a fire-breathing, mother-fucking dragon? in any case, we're also including here other natural-born draconic fighters, such as regular wild dragons, the Dragon Tribe Laguz, and the likes of the monstrous Necrodragon. although, funny enough, Engage in particular has a fair number of characters with draconic ancestry, and unique classes to match them, but only two of them actually ever exhibit the ability to transform in battle. (although, technially, any playable character in the game can transform by Engaging with Emblem Tiki, I guess)

Drawing People 2
Expecto patronum, my dude. It’s me, Evan! I am but a humble visitor in your land of tumbling, so I do not mean to presume, but perhaps the “long post” tag applied to my last missive means verbosity hath claimed my tongue, once again. Let me see if I can make the second act of this drama a little snappier.

these folks got basic, boring poses so I could use them as simple mannequins. Drawing like this out of my head is fun, but kind of time consuming. Doing a thorough job of the figure before clothing it shortens the time a good bit, and keeping the pose pretty simple removes any demand of the fabric to do difficult things.
Who this? Can’t tell you. Why this? Experimentation! These drawings were great test beds to answer questions about rendering: what kinda stuff works with characters in this idiom, what kind of linework, what level of detail, etc. But on the other side of the arbitrary distinction I’ve just decided to conjure are compositional questions. God I love that word. Composition — The sum of a picture.
Art history, and particular commercial art history has so many good answers to compositional questions, and a lot of their answers make a lot of sense for visual novels, what with commercial art often needing to wrangle decoration and flatness with representational stuff. I’m partial to the solutions of your Muchas Alphonse and kin, but that sort of density and curation of parts is only possible when you’re working with a single picture at a time. Duh, you say and I concur. We have to do more modular stuff, especially if we're going for a high level of detail, and we’re splitting up character and background duties. We needed to find ways of simplifying, modularizing and keeping things unified.

Western commerical art in the late 1800s is really a zenith of single-picture making in my books. It seems to me that there was an endless variety of exciting design exploration supported by real chops.
Luckily commercial art has some answers to this as well. Ya’ll heard of the Weiner Werkstatte? How about John Austen? Oh you’re a connoisseur are you? You’re a quite hip individual? Well then, you heard of Carl Otto Czeschka? (I dunno if that’s actually a deep cut.) Here are some common themes between them. Flatten space, use only a few distinct values and colors and use heavy blacks to unify the picture. 
Aside from these general ideas, we were specifically interested in Austen’s use of orthogonal perspective. It seemed like a really natural fit — centering the picture on the characters with the world as framing, it’s flatness generating less friction with textual and decorative elements and giving us a pretty consistent format to interface foreground and background elements. Hypothetically it gave us a tremendous amount and demanded less work… Hypothetically.

Pyrga didn’t wind up actually featuring in the prototype but I still love the big weirdo. A compositional feature you might not notice unless you a comp dweeb is that they're not fully balanced pictorially. They very much need an answer to their left, preferably above their shoulder. I tried to carry this compositional incompleteness forward with every asset so they would mesh well with one another and even if they were solo, there would be a visual relation with the background.
So bam. heavy blacks, less variety in the linework, very few colors and orthogonal perspective. There are things that work well here: being attentive to the turning edge of the shadows gives it a flavor I don’t see many places, and aiming for more naturalism gets it out of the Hades/Hellboy sorta cartoony zone that it was trending toward initially.
There are problems, too. I’m not good enough to get that level of naturalism out of my head with any kind of speed so I needed reference. With this character, that’s sort of ok. They're kindof an amorphous blob of fabric and that’s just fine for kit bashing different references and imagined bits and whatnot, but other characters have much more, let’s say definite garments. Secondly the spot blacks pose a real issue for decoration, they wind up needing to override any kind of patterning, and the linework on turning edges winds up noising up and cluttering things. The lack of line opacity and overall brush size is also making some detail work challenging, but I wasn’t quite sure how else to get the linework readable with the asset scaled at different sizes.
Now all this stuff shoulda given me pause, but there were a lot of plates to keep spinning. We were in the thick of writing, I was bouncing between finishing up other designs and trying to get the UI on track, yada yada. Petra was on the mind, as well. We were missing some key things for her — A mask and a cloak.

Designing this mask coincided with a push for more overtly greek looking stuff, so I was thinking of how to style a sort of blank face after typical greek statue face forms.
What good is a mask to a very overpowered warrior? Our answer was threat display, what with Petra often fighting enemies that wouldn’t be repelled by armor. This was something to stop hapless goons from running into the three toothed meatgrinder. So the question is what’s scary, then? What’s badass enough you don’t wanna fuck with the person wearing it?

It’s nice to do a little painting every now and then. 90% of this project h linework and flat color. Here the painting was particularly useful to communicate the form to future me who’d have to draw it from a lot of angles.
Turns out neither of us wanna fuck with the Hydratic's eponymous Hydra. It’s a pretty obvious subject in retrospect, what with Petra being a state zealot, but the thought of making that her mask didn’t come up till quite late, likely because in my head the Hydratics were a fundamentally 2d people — wouldn’t you know, turning a 2d idea 3d gave it a lot of personality.

A sasha sketch page. They had a lot of really fascinating ideas about Hydratic garments that made so much sense for their history.
The mask design was pretty straightforward all things considered. But the cloak… Sasha and I had been trading sketches of just what to do with that fuckin thing for like months. It was a complex problem because there were a lot of bases to hit. The Hydratics are modern, sporty, military, brand heavy, decorative, flat, uninterested in veneration. Petra is workmanlike, zealous, uncharmed by culture, physical, and at a pinnacle of hydratic military service. We need some indications of greek-ness no matter what, but we shouldn’t be too greek cause reasons. Getting these competing elements to all work together became a very interesting puzzle. How would you solve this?
For us the answer actually came outta watching 1917 a while back. Both Petra and Io are supposed to have a couple cues that liken them to ww1 soldiers, their experience in the apocalyptic conflict sharing some character with 1917’s hellish proceedings. This got me thinking about more dedicated military gear, and a slightly different character to Hyrdratic warriors. What of instead of hoplites, they were more like riflemen?

In research, I’d found a genre of eastern european military poncho/cape thingies that really worked. They got armholes so the soldier can handle their firearms while still wearing it, it doubles as a tent, it’s rugged, it’s got kind of a rigid silhouette but it can be worn in interesting ways to break up the figure, and importantly, it’s got a whole lot of real estate what you could jam Hydratic Icons on. It’s a perfect fit for Petra who’s traveled Greece fighting monsters and champions. Her spears even work as tentpoles!
I can’t say I’m 100% happy with the final design (pictured at the front of part 1) but good golly it’s a hellofalot closer to the goal than what we were cooking up before. So I think we can call this a draw. Some problems on the style front, some solutions on the character design front. But the damoclesian sword of asset-completion hangs large above our heads, dear reader. Oh dam I think that means there gonna be a part 3! Good golly!
