The New Year (OOC)
Tumblr media
>// What was 2023? In retrospect, in hindsight, it's a year of frustrations. It's a year of being kicked to the curb and being hung out to dry, and at the same time it's a year that's been... reconfirming?
I started the year learning that my IT team was being deleted. That we had two weeks before we were going to be moving to the BioMed project. Up until May, I was doing thankless, menial work scraping medical-grade stickers with a razor, and applying new, shittier labels instead. They wanted us to do more and more, and somehow nothing we did was good enough.
Come my birthday, we were put on extended leave, given one or two days' worth of work with weeks of nothing in-between... and come the end of May, we're told that we were retroactively let go.
I can't express how much I have to thank the friends who helped me get through those few months of rough waters as I tried to scramble and find something new for work.
It just sucks that the only job that took me was working at an industrial paint facility, right next to unrepentant felons who got fired left, right and center for HR violations, sex-on-the-job, and threatened violence against their coworkers. Working in 100°F (~37.78°C) internal temperatures next to a 400°F furnace? Not great. Their attendance policy was draconian, and if I missed four days (even with doctor's notes), I'd be terminated on the spot. I was there for over a month, and thankfully I managed to get some interview for other IT work in the meantime. I was able to leave on good terms with the company, and started work again in another hospital.
Which has been a delight (to be back in the field) with its stresses (being verbally abused by a boss and pushed by higher ups to achieve impossible metrics). Overall, super happy to be back!! It's not perfect, but it's helped me realize I do actually want to stay in this field.
Sometime along the year though, I fell out of love with the main hyperfixation I'd been carrying since 2019: Lancer RPG. I came to realize that the community, the developers, the people they trust to champion it... will never live up to the promises that the game set out for. That at its core, it's a fundamentally flawed game that no amount of hacking or patching will fix. And for a huge amount of the year... that left me in a rut.
And that.. brings me to now.
This is a massive laundry list of shit that's gone wrong this year. But I'm happy. My wife is doing better than she ever has, I was prescribed adderall and it's helped me get things done reliably. It's the first year that I've spent since college that visiting my parents went well, and no (real) fights or personal slights happened... and we actually spent Christmas with them for the first time since... 2018, I think?
I'm devving my own game now, I've learned a ton more programming, and I'm self-teaching myself some app development! All the while I've been hungrily consuming new interests, and feel pretty positive about how everything can go from here!
The pros... don't outweigh the cons, but I'm choosing to look for the future with a smile on my face. I have my ideas of where I'd like to be, and for anything awry with my work... my work-life balance is better than it was when I drove a school bus.
I'm hoping that I'll be able to write more with you all in the coming months... and I also hope that come March, I'll still have a job that I'm working, so I'm not going nuts with stress again!
Sorry to just splurge all over the dash; if you've read this far, I hope you're doing well! Let me know what piece of wisdom you picked up in 2023! Mine is: "Be adamant that you aren't going to do overtime. Never give them an inch, because they'll drag you for a mile."

Firstly, I would like to preface this review with this: To all the other reviewers out there giving this game a positive rating, trying to make funny jokes about how good the gameplay is, they're just trying to farm points. If you look at their playtime, most of them have less than an hour! You cannot truly experience the greatness of this game in a few minutes, an hour, or even 10. I have only just scratched the surface with my 100 hours, so I will be making constant updates as I play this game
My review: Pros: Tree Simulator 2022 is a game like no other. Every aspect has been carefully crafted to deliver the best possible player experience. You start out knowing nothing about the game (at least as long as you didn't look up any tutorials, which I STRONGLY suggest against doing, as it spoils the whole game). The lack of tutorial with only a few controls posted on the store page leads to exploratory gameplay. You adventure along with your tree, looking at the different magnificently crafted features. Each one just adds a whole new layer of complexity, a whole new path to go down. You will spend hours, lost, pouring over every aspect of this game, I warn you it's very addictive. Cons: Though the developer talks so much about the multiplayer features, they are highly overrated. At first it may seem good to have other trees there with you, adventuring with you along your way, but in the end it just distracts from the real gameplay, the interaction between you and your tree. In the end, it is much more immersive to play singleplayer, the one true, original mode. And then there's the graphics. They are pretty good, and it's nice that they've gotten better, but I feel the same way about them as I do about the multiplayer. They honestly just take away from the game. True, there's a grayscale option, but who wants that? No one, that's who! No, what we really need is a black and white mode. Just black and white. No fancy 3Dness, just you and a black & white tree. This would truly make the graphics amazing
Stats broken down: - Overall: 13/10 - Fun: 12/10 - Gameplay: 10/10 - Graphics: 9/10 - Story: 11/10 - Singleplayer: 16/10 - Multiplayer: 4/10 - Immersiveness: 14/10 - Difficulty Curve: 10/10
In the end: Tree simulator 2022 was an amazing addition to this already spectacular franchise. There are some elements of it that could be improved, some features that could be added, and some features that just honestly take away from the game, but in the end the story, the difficulty curve, the funness and the gameplay outweigh all else, ending up with at 13/10 overall.
200 hr edit: Wow it's been another 100 hours already! The time's gone by so fast! I feel like it was just yesterday that I had a mere 100 hours, and yet I have grown so much since then, as a person and as a tree. In terms of the gameplay, it has not gotten any worse, I could even go as far as to say it's gotten better. The story's always new and refreshing, and I've seen many UFOs at this point. It always seems like seeing UFOs will get old, yet each UFO always feels different. The creator of this game has done something beautiful with it, allowing each UFO to be it's own experience, it's own game in it of itself. I have now gotten through all of the settings in their basic forms, so now I'm working on going deep. I can confirm that this game has infinite replay-ability, and it never gets old. The amount of depth you can go into with each setting is utterly breathtaking. I can still confidently say that I have only just barely scratched the surface of this game with my 200 hours, so I will continue to update this review.
400 hr edit: Oops, I was supposed to do another edit at 300, but I was just too distracted by Tree Simulator 2022's amazing gameplay to notice the time! Well, now that I've hit 400 hours it seem a good a time as any to write another update on this truly breathtaking, honestly addictive experience. I thought I had gotten through the basics of the settings at 200 hours, but boooyyyy was I wrong. I have now learned enough about this game to know that I haven't gotten through even 1% of what this game has to offer. I have now seen many more parts of this game, each one not closing off paths that I knew about, but instead opening up new paths, new alleyways to go down. New ways to play, new discoveries to make. I can now confirm that I am fully immersed in Tree Simulator 2022's gameplay, everything about it just pulled me in and refuses to let me go. Everything is just perfect. I know I was critical of Multiplayer at first, but now that I'm getting into it, I'm really starting to understand and enjoy what it could mean for the over-all game. I think at first I was just overwhelmed at the new possibilities it could bring. It just made this whole new branch is the ever-growing tree of gameplay, one larger than any of the others. Now that I have gotten through 400 hours, however, I can now see why the creator added it. It just makes the game so different, that it almost would merit it's own game. Now that I've seen even just a tiny bit of what multiplayer can bring, though, I will now be trying to explore down that path a little before I go and experience the true, original, single-player, gameplay once again.
1k HOUR EDIT: It's been 1k hours now, and Tree Simulator 2022 is still the best game I've ever played. Firstly a few things to note: There's been a few updates, some of which I've liked, and some of which seem to have introduced bugs. Firstly, I love the idea of a tree timer in the top left corner. It really helped me, especially because I didn't really want to quit out of the app to check my time. I needed some way of knowing when to update this review, and honestly having to go back to steam every once in a while is annoying. The only thing I've found about it is that it seems to get an outdated time. I don't know why this is happening, but for me it's like 40 hours off. This wasn't too much of a problem, as I noticed it immediately and the difference hasn't changed, but it's slightly annoying. There was also another update that seems to have done nothing, except for that now every ~100 hours, it will randomly set the time on and turn it to the max speed. This is very annoying for my immersion in the game, so I wish it could be fixed. Another bug I've been seeing for as long as I've been playing is that sometimes the resolution of the game will randomly change, and it's quite annoying. Other than that, it's been fun. I've been playing a bunch of both singleplayer and multiplayer, switching between them every couple days. I've noticed that some trees have been leaveing (get it?) recently, and this has made me very sad. Some I thought were dedicated, but alas they had to go. I don't think it was because of the game though, it was probably just that they had to do something irl, whatever that means. Game wise, it's been interesting. More UFOs (I think I'm starting to understand some hidden lore with them), and more tree watching. Some how the author has come up with a game that can be interesting even after the 1k hours mark, which is not something that can be said for just anyone. Like I said before, I'm even just now figuring out some hidden lore, I think there's a connection with the UFOs and another detail I noticed around the 900 hour mark. The past 100 hours have been dedicated to trying to figure out more details. It's super interesting looking into this lore, the author has done an excellent job with making surface level facts clear, but then adding small details in for the dedicated people like myself.
Alas it seems as though I've reached steam's review length limit, so I will be continuing this review in the comments.
1k HOURS CONTINUED:
I've found the game to somehow still meet my optimal difficulty level even after all this time. The game makes it satisfying learning new skills and getting better, while then becoming more difficult to match your skills. It does an excellent job balancing on the fine line of satisfying parts, while still being a good challenge.
NOTE: I've been getting a lot of friend requests recently, and I really appreciate it, but please know that for each request I get I will check your time in tree simulator 2022, and if you don't have at least 500 hours (or close to it), I will deny your request

Imagine you're playing a team game where you have human team members. Do you think it's the best option to follow the big tank (who went first btw) while you're a squishy hacker or is the best option to go the opposite way of the tank and get targeted by everything? Better yet, what if no one followed the big tank? Also is it fair for the player who got rocked (hacker) to be mad at the tank player they didn't follow for not jumping in and getting absolutely hit by everything? Or mad at every other player actually for not going out in the open to get destroyed? Granted...team communication was terrible, but should the team have followed the tank that does the most damage and could've protected them?
id like 2 preface this with im very tired and have been writing a fic for the past 12 hrs and cant read rn so im like. hoping im reading this right. my eyes r crossing a bit looking at all the words
anon im so sorry first of all, i have Been There as someone who mains primarily tank/support. dps r just Like That. i think you should be able to bully them w/o the potential of losing endorsements
but also if ur a hacker (character) n just wanna run off n do ur lil hacker thing and stealth around then all the power to you! but generally speakin the team should be behind or at minimum NEAR the tanks assumin theyre like. going the right way. i cant see why you wouldn’t wanna huddle behind a shield if you have less than 400 hp. shields are friend shaped. they’re always there for you, unless some shoeless professor decides 2 just randomly move it before its destroyed
i guess if like. the whole team is going one way and you (tank) are going another, you should probs go hang out w/ your team tho, that’s like, ur job
n as far as the rest of the team goes, some dps r just. better milling around on their own for sure, but like. dont. follow them sdkjfghdg
n like obvi tanks r very capable of being total hooligans n just straight up Not Pushing Forward but idk i’d trust the shots called by a mediocre rein more than a dps who wants to be god anyday. maybe i just play too much healer

THE HATING GAME BY SALLY THORNE
Page Count: 387 pages Publisher: William Morrow Release Date: August 9th, 2016 Purchase Options: Amazon, Indiebound, Barnes and Noble [ Click Here For My Full Review ]
“Lucy Hutton has always been certain that the nice girl can get the corner office. She’s charming and accommodating and prides herself on being loved by everyone at Bexley & Gamin. Everyone except for coldly efficient, impeccably attired, physically intimidating Joshua Templeman. And the feeling is mutual. Trapped in a shared office together 40 (OK, 50 or 60) hours a week, they’ve become entrenched in an addictive, ridiculous never-ending game of one-upmanship. There’s the Staring Game. The Mirror Game. The HR Game. Lucy can’t let Joshua beat her at anything—especially when a huge new promotion goes up for the taking. If Lucy wins this game, she’ll be Joshua’s boss. If she loses, she’ll resign. So why is she suddenly having steamy dreams about Joshua, and dressing for work like she’s got a hot date? After a perfectly innocent elevator ride ends with an earth-shattering kiss, Lucy starts to wonder whether she’s got Joshua Templeman all wrong. Maybe Lucy Hutton doesn’t hate Joshua Templeman. And maybe, he doesn’t hate her either. Or maybe this is just another game.”
This book is what finally pushed me into reading adult romances. Yeah, I had read a couple before this one, but this is the book that made me fall in love with the genre. I know it’s been talked about by most everyone, but if you haven’t read it yet, this summer is the perfect time (especially with the movie in the works)!
THE KISS QUOTIENT (THE KISS QUOTIENT #1) BY HELEN HOANG
Page Count: 333 pages Publisher: Berkley Release Date: June 5th, 2018 Purchase Options: Amazon, Indiebound, Barnes and Noble [ Click Here For My Full Review ]
“Stella Lane thinks math is the only thing that unites the universe. She comes up with algorithms to predict customer purchases — a job that has given her more money than she knows what to do with, and way less experience in the dating department than the average thirty-year-old. It doesn’t help that Stella has Asperger’s and French kissing reminds her of a shark getting its teeth cleaned by pilot fish. Her conclusion: she needs lots of practice — with a professional. Which is why she hires escort Michael Phan. The Vietnamese and Swedish stunner can’t afford to turn down Stella’s offer, and agrees to help her check off all the boxes on her lesson plan — from foreplay to more-than-missionary position… Before long, Stella not only learns to appreciate his kisses, but to crave all the other things he’s making her feel. Soon, their no-nonsense partnership starts making a strange kind of sense. And the pattern that emerges will convince Stella that love is the best kind of logic… ”
Firstly, if you aren’t a fan of series, don’t worry. This is just a series of companion novels, so you don’t have to commit to them. But trust me when I say, after reading this, you will want to. I just love this book so much. These characters are just absolutely amazing and you will not regret picking this up!
JOSH AND HAZEL’S GUIDE TO NOT DATING BY CHRISTINA LAUREN
Page Count: 309 pages Publisher: Gallery Books Release Date: September 4th, 2018 Purchase Options: Amazon, Indiebound, Barnes and Noble [ Click Here For My Full Review ]
“Hazel Camille Bradford knows she’s a lot to take—and frankly, most men aren’t up to the challenge. If her army of pets and thrill for the absurd don’t send them running, her lack of filter means she’ll say exactly the wrong thing in a delicate moment. Their loss. She’s a good soul in search of honest fun. Josh Im has known Hazel since college, where her zany playfulness proved completely incompatible with his mellow restraint. From the first night they met—when she gracelessly threw up on his shoes—to when she sent him an unintelligible email while in a post-surgical haze, Josh has always thought of Hazel more as a spectacle than a peer. But now, ten years later, after a cheating girlfriend has turned his life upside down, going out with Hazel is a breath of fresh air. Not that Josh and Hazel date. At least, not each other. Because setting each other up on progressively terrible double blind dates means there’s nothing between them…right?”
I have two Christina Lauren books on this list because I am addicted to their books. However, this one is by far my favorite of theirs. It’s a friends-to-lovers done so well, you won’t be able to put it down. I know I wasn’t able to.
RED, WHITE, AND ROYAL BLUE BY CASEY MCQUISTON
Page Count: 423 pages Publisher: St. Martin’s Griffin Release Date: May 14th, 2019 Purchase Options: Amazon, Indiebound, Barnes and Noble [ Click Here For My Full Review ]
“First Son Alex Claremont-Diaz is the closest thing to a prince this side of the Atlantic. With his intrepid sister and the Veep’s genius granddaughter, they’re the White House Trio, a beautiful millennial marketing strategy for his mother, President Ellen Claremont. International socialite duties do have downsides—namely, when photos of a confrontation with his longtime nemesis Prince Henry at a royal wedding leak to the tabloids and threaten American/British relations.
The plan for damage control: staging a fake friendship between the First Son and the Prince. Alex is busy enough handling his mother’s bloodthirsty opponents and his own political ambitions without an uptight royal slowing him down. But beneath Henry’s Prince Charming veneer, there’s a soft-hearted eccentric with a dry sense of humor and more than one ghost haunting him.
As President Claremont kicks off her reelection bid, Alex finds himself hurtling into a secret relationship with Henry that could derail the campaign and upend two nations. And Henry throws everything into question for Alex, an impulsive, charming guy who thought he knew everything: What is worth the sacrifice? How do you do all the good you can do? And, most importantly, how will history remember you?”
You all knew I would have to put this book on here. It’s my obsession. The love of my life. I know this book is getting a lot of hype right now, but let me tell you, it deserves all of it. This book is really something special. Not only is it an adorable romance with enemies-to-lovers and plenty of wit, but it’s also a powerful read that you don’t want to miss.
THE UNHONEYMOONERS BY CHRISTINA LAUREN
Page Count: 400 Publisher: May 14th, 2019 Release Date: Gallery Books Purchase Options: Amazon, Indiebound, Barnes and Noble [ Click Here For My Full Review ]
“Olive is always unlucky: in her career, in love, in…well, everything. Her identical twin sister Ami, on the other hand, is probably the luckiest person in the world. Her meet-cute with her fiancé is something out of a romantic comedy (gag) and she’s managed to finance her entire wedding by winning a series of Internet contests (double gag). Worst of all, she’s forcing Olive to spend the day with her sworn enemy, Ethan, who just happens to be the best man. Olive braces herself to get through 24 hours of wedding hell before she can return to her comfortable, unlucky life. But when the entire wedding party gets food poisoning from eating bad shellfish, the only people who aren’t affected are Olive and Ethan. And now there’s an all-expenses-paid honeymoon in Hawaii up for grabs. Putting their mutual hatred aside for the sake of a free vacation, Olive and Ethan head for paradise, determined to avoid each other at all costs. But when Olive runs into her future boss, the little white lie she tells him is suddenly at risk to become a whole lot bigger. She and Ethan now have to pretend to be loving newlyweds, and her luck seems worse than ever. But the weird thing is that she doesn’t mind playing pretend. In fact, she feels kind of… lucky.”
While Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating may be my favorite Christina Lauren book, this one is pretty close. Enemies-to-lovers, fake datings, and basically every other classic trope everyone loves found their way into this extremely fun read.
WELL MET BY JEN DELUCA
Page Count: 336 Publisher: Berkley Release Date: September 3rd, 2019 Purchase Options: Amazon, Indiebound, Barnes and Noble [ Click Here For My Review Teaser ]
“Emily knew there would be strings attached when she relocated to the small town of Willow Creek, Maryland, for the summer to help her sister recover from an accident, but who could anticipate getting roped into volunteering for the local Renaissance Faire alongside her teenaged niece? Or that the irritating and inscrutable schoolteacher in charge of the volunteers would be so annoying that she finds it impossible to stop thinking about him? The faire is Simon’s family legacy and from the start he makes clear he doesn’t have time for Emily’s lighthearted approach to life, her oddball Shakespeare conspiracy theories, or her endless suggestions for new acts to shake things up. Yet on the faire grounds he becomes a different person, flirting freely with Emily when she’s in her revealing wench’s costume. But is this attraction real, or just part of the characters they’re portraying? This summer was only ever supposed to be a pit stop on the way to somewhere else for Emily, but soon she can’t seem to shake the fantasy of establishing something more with Simon, or a permanent home of her own in Willow Creek.”
Okay, I know this one won’t be published until summer is over, but I need to mention it. It’s absolutely amazing! Seriously, it’s completely worth the wait. The relationship is so perfect, the characters are all amazing, and it takes place at a Ren Faire!!! What more could you ask for?

What is your favorite summer romance? I really need some good recommendations!!

Hey!
Tumblr media
So like has anyone here played the Disney Magic Kingdoms App Game?
It’s a little simple app game that tbh, can get a little boring from time to time because like the main thing you do is sent the characters out to do certain tasks and what not in order to get rid of this darkness that Maleficent had sent all over the Magic Kingdom. But like the main point of the game that is being advertised is ‘Make The Kingdom of Your Dreams’ or something similar to that.
Which honestly, is still fun! I like getting attractions and concession stands and decorating the Magic Kingdom to look the way I like it! Sadly though, it seems like many people have the issue of having no more land and like while I don’t currently have that issue (just recently began playing the game and the app as been around for like 2 years now?), I am not all that worried about all my land being taken up since I still have a good amount I have yet to clear out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is also fun getting the Disney characters too! Starting with Mickey (obviously), then going on to get Woody, and many others too! Currently in the actual storyline of the game, I am focusing on more Toy Story tasks and trying to get the tokens in order to get Nick from Zootopia (I already have Judy, yay!). Even just finished defeating Mother Gothel, so I now can also have her as an in game character too! But she is a lot more difficult to get in comparison to Nick, so he is my main focus for now.
BUT the one thing about the game that DOES suck the most is how half of the Disney characters currently in the game are Event based characters, and so like unless you were there for the event, willing to pay the actual cash when they momentarily become available within a Legendary Chest each moth or want to waste 60 of your gems for the possible chance of winning a past event character - they are sadly not available.
AND THAT SUCKS!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like I want to own the entire Parr family from The Incredibles, but like since I didn’t have the game when that event occurred (which I think was like sometime last summer?), I can’t get them!! I mean, I have Helen because I was able to win her after wasting 60 gems on a Legendary Chest, but it is very difficult to get the rest of them!
And the same applies for many other characters like those from Frozen, The Lion King, Alice in Wonderland, Aladdin...
Although, I don’t know which one is worst. Knowing that you missed an event completely and the off chance of at least getting MOST of the characters, or taking part of the event and getting most of the characters except for the last one that you need to help save?! (Excluding those who also originally cost gems, because with every Disney film/franchise, there is at least one character who you have to waste gems on if you want to get, event or in story based character. Like Wall-E, he costs 400+ gems, I cry!)
Tumblr media
Currently the event going on is a Lilo & Stitch one and like I have everyone but Jumba, since he costs 275 gems (but I almost have enough for him so I may buy him before the event officially comes to an end), AND STITCH and trying to get Stitch is SO FRUSTRATING!!! I didn’t have as much frustration in winning Poo (which was the pervious event they had), but like there are only three more days of the event left and I still need like 6 more of his hat tokens to win him!!! I am getting such a bad headache at sending Nani, Pleakley, Mr. Bubbles and Angel to help save Stitch for 4 hrs, and win nothing! Plus Lilo doesn’t even have the option to help either outside of winning the first hat token for him, which sucks too because how can they not have Lilo take part into saving Stitch?!
I NEED HIM!!! It is not Lilo and Stitch without STITCH! Heck, they even added Angel into the game, a character who came from the show rather then the film, and like if I have her, then I definitely need STITCH!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am like seriously dying in being so close to having him, yet feeling so far away! I need 5 more hats and the drop rate for them are so low, it’s crazy -cries- If I have a day left and I still don’t have Stitch, I will have to waste my gems on him because I just need him. Sadly, that would mean no Jumba, but depending on how much I will have to waste for the rest of his hats, I could at the very least buy the Stitch Great Escape attraction since that is like 150 gems only (would have bought it earlier, but Pleakely and the Stitch Flout got all of my gems at the beginning of the event).
Also, I know that everything I am saying may not make any sense, but like the Disney Magic Kingdoms Game is so frustrating at times! I like playing it, but the events are so tiring because like they seriously become much more difficult to get if you miss the event, and that is only unless you want to waste actual money on it and I am not doing that. Don’t have the money for it even if I wanted to, anyways.
The only other good thing is that the developers behind the game does update it from time to time, and do add new characters as well. Fairy Godmother was a recent addition into the main storyline, and as well as Peter, Wendy and Captain Hook about three months back (Tink was an already available character who you get for free after playing the game for like a month), so hopefully during the summer there will be more non-event based characters available or at the very least, they make the past event characters as in storyline one because like I seriously want the Parr family people! Helen needs her husband and kids!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Plus you know, hoping for them to add Coco characters and Bh6 characters, and Moana, and so on, and so on.
...Yeah, sorry for my rambling! Just wanted to just talk about this, so I decided to do so here.

Request: Skyrim’s Potage Le Magnifique
This request from @midasesquivel has given me the run around for far too long. I spent a while trying to find the right flavor mixture, starting to add more and more unnecessary ingredients. But one night I sat down and looked at everything again my epiphany came down to this: nothing beats roasted garlic (the only addition I decided worth keeping) and caramelized onions for feel-good flavors in a soup. And I’m glad I took my own advice because I can finally present Skyrim’s Potage Le Magnifique!
Tumblr media
~Ingredients~
2 cups Chicken Broth
2 cups Beef Broth
1 small White Onion
1 bulb of Garlic
2 cups diced Carrots
4 tbsp. Butter, separated in half
2 tbsp. Flour or Cornstarch
Spices to taste: Black Pepper, Herbs de Provence or a mixture of rosemary, thyme, sage, and parsley.
Olive Oil, as needed
Prep Time: Up to 1 hr. | Total Cook Time: 30 - 40 min.
Serves: ~4 cups of soup
~Instructions~
Preparing the Roast Garlic
Step 1.) Preheat your oven to 400°F. Take the bulb of garlic and remove the outermost layers of the bulb (A few layers will come off easily in your hands. The result should be a bulb with fewer outer layers, but that is still in one piece)
Step 2.) Cut the top 1-2 inches of the bulb so that the sliced tops of the garlic cloves are showing.
Step 3.) Place aluminum on a baking sheet an put the garlic bulb in the center. Drizzle the bulb with a spoonful of olive oil and then seal the foil around the bulb. Bake for 40 minutes, then open the foil and allow to bake for 10 min. increments until the cloves are fork tender and their color is browned to your liking. Set aside to cool for at least 10 min. before handling.
Step 4.) When you go to remove the garlic, they are soft and should easily come out. You can either pull the cloves off and peel the casings open, or squeeze the cloves out of the bulb like a tube of toothpaste. Set aside.
Preparing the Soup
Step 1.) Take the onion and cut it into long, thin pieces. Melt 2 tbsp. of butter in the soup pot and add in the onions. Allow to cook over a medium heat for 10-15 min. or until the onions are soft and browned.
Step 2.) Once the onions are almost fully caramelized, add in the roast garlic and the spices and stir the mixture together.
Step 3.) Lower the heat and push the mixture to one side of the pot. Place the other 2 tbsp. of butter into the pot and allow it to melt. Add in the flour.cornstarch. Whisk the butter and flour together while slowly raising the heat back up to medium until you get a fully mixed roux.
Step 4.) Once you have the roux mixed, add in the chopped carrots and mix everything that is in the pot together. Slowly begin stirring in the chicken and beef broth. Allow everything to come to a bowl and then simmer until the carrots are soft. Taste the soup and adjust the spices as necessary.
Step 5.) As the soup has been simmering and then begins to cool, it will continue to thicken. If it does not seem thick enough for your potage, you can add another tbsp. of flour/cornstarch. At this point, you can serve the soup with the carrots still in cubes, or you can take a blender to the soup to make it completely smooth. Serve with bread of your choice! Enjoy!
~Results~
Tumblr media
The roast garlic and caramelized onions bring a powerful base flavor to this soup, and I’ve begun to use it as a base for a lot of my soups, not just the potage! I recommend for any garlic lover, and those who aren’t feeling good and need a hot soup as a pick-me-up!

Ugh Hunter & Riley for that broship meme :D
This Meme|Always Accepting
♡ send me a ship and i’ll tell you…♡
when they go camping, who reads the map wrong and gets them lost:
There’s that moment between sleep and wakefulness at 0:400 hrs that has Riley alternately praying for death and wondering who the fuck would call him at this hour. He gropes in the dark before Johnny Cash can wake his sleeping girlfriend. Unlocking his phone and blearily checking the number, he stifles a curse and carefully sits up.
Much as he hates to, he doesn’t try to get his legs under himself so to speak and instead settles in the one piece of furniture he hates, before pushing himself into the next room.
Calls the number back, and just…listens. There’s a few ‘uh-huhs’ and ‘affirmatives’ in there. But for as little noise as he makes, she wakes up anyway.
“Andrew?” And God, how he’s going miss waking up next to that sleep-rumpled voice of hers. “Andy, what’s wrong?”“Hey, Accoushla,” he says and awkwardly invites her to sit in his lap. He hates himself for what he’s about to say, how easily the lie comes. “So…ah… that was my Uncle Phil. He’s sending someone over to pick me up. I guess my cousin Hunter went on a camping trip and my uncle’s worried because he hasn’t heard from him in a few days. Asked me to go check on him up at the family cabin. I’d invite you to go, but with Noah….well. Ya know. Also, cell reception up there’s kind of shitty, so if you don’t hear from me while I’m gone, know I’ll be missing you.”
“Of course. Family’s important.” She runs her fingers through his hair and kisses his brow. Doesn’t even ask why she’s never heard of either man before.
“To me he is.”
who would be a king/queen and who would be a knight:
“Listen – strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the mas-”“Shut up, mate.”
Riley grins. “-masses, not some farcical aquatic ceremony.”
The side-glance Hunter throws his way would have peeled paint. Sitting shoulder to shoulder, his knee is bouncing and his expression is inscrutable, even to Riley in the dim lights. His mind is on the mission and he’s taking it far more seriously than Andy feels is necessary. And that’s really where the two men are vastly different. Hunter’s usually all charm and tired smiles and Riley’s usually the one whose interest in things only extends as far as the bottom of his glass.
But at 35,000 the Brit becomes all business. Maybe it’s the mission, maybe it’s that he doesn’t like flying. Riley doesn’t really know and he’s trying to make light of the situation. He can do this all day, after all and maybe his mood is boosted because they are flying.
“….I mean, if I went around sayin’ I was an emperor just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they’d put me away!”
Hunter tries to shoulder-chuck him but the harness keeps him in place and gives him only so much room. “You really are an arsehole, aren’t you.”“Yeah. But what does that make you?”Hunter grins. “I am Arthur. King of the Britains.”
who is the superhero and who is the sidekick:
“45.” Hunter sat on the ground, knees raised to his chest and arms loosely hugging them, hands wrapped around a water bottle.“47.” Riley raised a brow, still laying on his back, staring up at the ceiling.“First two didn’t count.”“Even so…it’s a tie.”And so it went. Mile for mile they ran. Full battle-rattle. Later, they’d say uphill both ways. Their shot patterns were identical. Riley edged the Brit out on the buddy-carry… “If you didn’t weigh the same as a mini-Cooper…”But Hunter took the belly crawl. “S’cheatin’ that is. I’m a half leg down.”“Still lost.”
A week later, they’re at the bar and still trying to work out which one of them was harder-core. They’d moved from PT to other skills, trivia to board games but the games, however competitive they were, came out in a dead heat.“You two still at this?” Brian asks as he takes the third seat. “Bitches, please. We all know…I’m Batman, Junior here is Robin and you, Drewski….lets just call you Alfred.”Beth cleared her throat, setting down a tray of Irish nachos. In unison, they all agreed on one thing. “Poison Ivy.”
who enjoys watching romanic comedies more and who would rather watch bee movie™ on repeat:
“This? Again?”“Fuck you. It’s my favourite movie.”Hunter’s just about to give him another ration of shit when certain things come to his attention. Specifically, the way Riley’s sitting. There’s a cushion at the small of his back, and his leg is bent at an odd angle. The planes of his face are hard and a little waxen and his eyes are dilated in such a specific way that Hunter knows he’s a little high. There’s also the fact that his friend’s gaze can’t seem to track anything, which is ridiculous.
It’s pain and on nights like these, no sleep will be had and nothing will mollify the ache in Riley’s bones. So Hunter does the only thing he can do. He helps himself in the kitchen and makes a batch of curry-dusted popcorn. Sits down on the couch and makes himself comfortable.
He sets the bowl between them within easy reach and takes the offered bottle of beer. “Ta. Really was Kilmer’s defining role, wasn’t it?”“You’re still not my Hungarian devil.”“A fact I will just have to live with.”
who prefers puppies and who prefers kittens:
Hunter watches Riley through the window, specifically how he takes the fall and lands on his side, football tucked into his side as he curls around it almost protectively. Noah’s standing over his father in triumph at having tackled the man’s long legs. A golden retriever puppy dances and gambols around them, barking a little high-pitched sound more ears and enthusiasm than real grace. Of the boy and the puppy, Hunter’s sure they’ll grow into their paws. And something bittersweet creeps up on him. He’d wondered, once upon a time, what kind of father he’d have made. And he comforts himself by saying he’d have been shite at it, and is glad that he and Bobbi didn’t have that as a bone of contention between them. He’s not sure how long he was standing there, or what the expression was on his face because the glass doesn’t reflect it or because he just hadn’t noticed but eventually an arm slips around his waist and a slender, long fingered hand curls around his bicep.“You should go out there and save my husband. He looks like he needs all the help he can get.”
He looks down and smiles, maybe wistfully, at Seren. “Yeah?”Riley’s wife smiles back, her expression soft. “Yeah. Besides, what’s a friendly tag game without Uncle Hunter evening the score?”“I can’t be held responsible if I make him look bad.”“And that’s exactly why I’m sending you into the backyard. Knock a little wind out of his sails. You going to stay for dinner?”“I’d love to, but my cat gets rather angry when I’m late.”
who knits the ugly sweater for the other:
“Put it the fuck on and try to look happy.”
“But…look at it, Who does she think I am, Captain Britain?!”“She went through a lot of trouble to make it for you.”Anyone else, and the jumper would have gone straight into the donation bin where others of its kind often went to die a lonely, second-hand death. The too-bright green for the tree made his eyes ache, and the lines of the Union Jack behind it were just a little off kilter. And where did she even find tinsel yarn?“You owe me one, Riley.”“I always do. But at least it spares her feelings.”Anyone else but Beth and he wouldn’t have cared so much. “Next year, it’s going to be Mexico and not New York.”“You keep saying that. Maybe some day it’ll be true.”
which one can cook and which one can’t even make a bowl of cereal:It’s certainly not that Hunter couldn’t cook, if he wanted to. He just didn’t have the time and inclination that Riley seems to have. And it gets the other up and out of his whiskey-fog for an hour, sometimes more. And if it satisfies some need to treat him like a stray, then…there’s worse things to be.

Here are all 21 companies from Alchemist Accelerator’s latest batch
We’re down in Sunnyvale, CA today, where Alchemist Accelerator is hosting a demo day for its most recent batch of companies. This is the 23rd class to graduate from Alchemist, with notable alums including LaunchDarkly, MightyHive, Matternet, and Rigetti Computing. As an enterprise accelerator, Alchemist focuses on companies that make their money from other businesses, rather than consumers.
21 companies presented in all, each getting five minutes to explain their mission to a room full of investors, media, and other founders.
Here are our notes on all 21 companies, in the order in which they presented:
i-50: Uses AI to monitor human actions on production lines, using computer vision to look for errors or abnormalities along the way. Founder Albert Kao says that 68% of manufacturing issues are caused by human error. The company currently has 3 paid pilots, totalling $190k in contracts.
Perimeter: A data visualization platform for firefighters and other first responders, allowing them to more quickly input and share information (such as how a fire is spreading) with each other and the public. Projecting $1.7M in revenue within 18 months.
Einsite: Computer vision-based analytics for mining and construction. Sensors and cameras are mounted on heavy machines (like dump trucks and excavators). Footage is analyzed in the cloud, with the data ultimately presented to job site managers to help monitor progress and identify issues. Founder Anirudh Reddy says the company will have $1.2M in bookings and be up and running on 2100 machines this year.
Mall IQ: A location-based marketing/analytics SDK for retail stores and malls to tie into their apps. Co-founder Batu Sat says they’ve built an “accurate and scalable” method of determining a customer’s indoor position without GPS or additional hardware like Bluetooth beacons.
Ipsum Analytics: Machine learning system meant to predict the outcome of a company’s ongoing legal cases by analyzing the relevant historical cases of a given jurisdiction, judge, etc. First target customer is hedge funds, helping them project how legal outcomes will impact the market.
Vincere Health: Works with insurance companies to pay people to stop smoking. They’ve built an app with companion breathalyzer hardware; each time a user checks in with the breathalyzer to prove they’re smoking less, the user gets paid. They’ve raised $400k so far.
Harmonize: A chat bot system for automating HR tasks, built to work with existing platforms like Slack and Microsoft Teams. An employee could, for example, message the bot to request time off — the request is automatically forwarded to their manager, presenting them with one-click approve/deny buttons which handle everything behind the scenes. The company says it currently has 400 paying customers and is seeing $500k in ARR, projecting $2M ARR in 2020.
Coreshell Technologies: Working on a coating for lithium-Ion batteries which the company says makes them 25% cheaper and 50% faster to produce. The company’s co-founder says they have 11 patents filed, with 2 paid agreements signed and 12 more in the pipeline.
in3D: An SDK for 3D body scanning via smartphone, meant to help apps do things like gather body measurements for custom clothing, allow for virtual clothing try-ons, or create accurate digital avatars for games.
Domatic: “Intelligent power” for new building construction. Pushes both data and low-voltage power over a single “Class 2” wire , making it easier/cheaper for builders to make a building “smart”. Co-founder Jim Baldwin helped build Firewire at Apple, and co-founder Gladys Wong was previously a hardware engineer at Cisco.
MeToo Kit: a kit meant to allow victims of sexual assault or rape to gather evidence through an at-home, self-administered process. Co-founder Madison Campbell says that they’ve seen 100k kits ordered by universities, corporations, non-profits, and military organizations. The company garnered significant controversy in September of 2019 after multiple states issued cease-and-desist letters, with Michigan’s Attorney General arguing that such a kit would not be admissible in court. Campbell told Buzzfeed last year that she would “never stop fighting” for the concept.
AiChemist Metal: Building a thin, lightweight battery made of copper and cellulose “nanofibers”. Co-founder Sergey Lopatin says the company’s solution is 2-3x lighter, stronger, and cheaper than alternatives, and that the company is projecting profitability in 2021. Focusing first on batteries for robotics, flexible displays, and electric vehicles.
Delightree: A task management system for franchises, meant to help owners create and audit to-dos across locations. Monitors online customer reviews, automatically generating potential tasks accordingly. In pilot tests with 3 brands with 16 brands on a waitlist, which the company says translates to about $400k in potential ARR.
DigiFabster: A ML-powered “smart quoting” tool for manufacturing shops doing things like CNC machining to make custom parts and components. Currently working with 125 customers, they’re seeing $500k in ARR.
NachoNacho: Helps small/medium businesses monitor and manage software subscriptions their employees sign up for. Issues virtual credit cards which small businesses use to sign up for services; you can place budgets on each card, cancel cards, and quickly determine where your money is going. Launched 9 months ago, NachoNacho says it’s currently working with over 1600 businesses.
Zapiens: a virtual assistant-style tool for sharing knowledge within a company, tied into tools like Slack/Salesforce/Microsoft 365. Answers employee questions, or uses its understanding of each employee’s expertise to find someone within the company who can answer the question.
Onebrief: A tool aiming to make military planning more efficient. Co-founder/Army officer Grant Demaree says that much of the military’s planning is buried in Word/Powerpoint documents, with inefficiencies leading to ballooning team sizes. By modernizing the planning approach with a focus on visualization, automation and data re-usability, he says planning teams could be smaller yet more agile.

We heard about the long days in Alaska, but it felt unreal to experience it in person. Dinner at 9pm felt like an early dinner with our plates perfectly lit up by the window light. At am, we had to pull the blackout curtains, because golden hour last for several hours. It was all very trippy, and I thought to myself, I could live here for a summer.

7 Unforgettable Things to Do in Denali National Park
After spending 5 days exploring Denali National Park, we’re already putting together a game plan on how get an RV and slow travel through Alaska!
While we were there, a lot of the people we met were just passing through on a cruise. Most people only spend a day or two in the Denali area before heading to their next destination on their Alaska itinerary. We stayed 5 days and still felt like it wasn’t enough. Meet you there next year?
Content Menu
What You Need to Know Before You Visit
You can only drive the first 5 miles into the park. From Savage River Check Station, you must either take a bus, bicycle, or hike in. Most people see Denali National Park by either shuttle bus or interpretive bus tour.
Mt McKinley was renamed Denali in 205 so you’ll still hear both names.
Weather is fickle. Our driver was told us that only 30% of people get to see Denali. A lot of the times, it is shrouded in clouds. For your best chances, go as early morning as possible. Clouds tend to come in during the day.
Bring a map (NatGeo Denali National Park) or hike with a guide. Denali is wild. It’s the backcountry and there are not many well-maintained trails. It’s easiest to hike when you stick near river beds but you can expect bushwhacking and stream crossings as well.
Bring Bug Spray. If you make it out to Wonder Lake, bring a bug net. They might look stupid, but you will feel stupid after getting dozens of bug bites on your face.
How the Buses Work - 4 Types of Buses
This was probably what confused me the most before I arrived in Denali.
Free Shuttle Buses only travel the first 5 miles of the park road. It connects visitor centers and points of interest where you can already drive your own vehicle.
Tour Buses are narrated and can travel further into the park along Denali Park Road. There are
Tips for Buses
Specific schedules are subject to small adjustments throughout the season. Always check the latest schedule when you arrive.
When you purchase your tickets, you will be charged the park entrance fee. Be sure to bring your annual park pass (good for up to 4 people) with you. If you forgot it like we did, you can bring it the next day and get a reimbursement.
Bus trips range from 4.5 to 2 hours. Keep that in mind while you’re planning your days. If you plan on trying to catch a bus back, be patient. Those who have tickets for that particular bus will have priority.
Visitor CenterS
The Denali Visitor Center is only open in the summer from 8am to 6pm. This is the main visitor center near the entrance of the park. Watch the park film, check out exhibits, or join one of the ranger led programs. You can also get backcountry permits here.
The Murie Science and Learning Center (MSLC) is the main visitor center during the fall, winter, and spring. It is also located at the front of the park and showcases research from living laboratories like Denali National park. It is open daily from 9:30am to 5pm.
The Eielson Visitor Center is also only open during the summer. It’s located at Mile 66 and can be reached by most shuttle buses and the Kantishna Experience tour bus. There are ranger-led programs, a small art gallery, and beautiful views of Denali on clear days. It’s open from pm to 3pm in the summer and 9am to 5:30pm the rest of the year.
The Denali Bus Depot (formerly Wilderness Access Center) is only open in the summer. You can busy bus tickets, reserve campsites, and check in for existing reservations. It is located near the park entrance and is open from 5am to 7pm. There is a small coffee shop, bookstore and is where you will catch your bus.
The Walter Harper Talkeetna Ranger Station is located about 00 miles south of the Denali National Park and Preserve in the town of Talkeetna. This ranger station is the center of mountaineering operations. Climbers who plan on Denali or other peaks in the Alaska Range need to stop here first. It is open year round from 8am to 5:30pm.
. Nenana River Whitewater Rafting
With Explore Denali Rafting, you can either hop on a mild Wilderness Float Trip where you can simply enjoy the views, or get your adrenaline pumping on a Paddle or Canyon Run.
We did the Paddle Run and hit some gnarly rapids! There were only four of us in the raft in addition to our guide, where we all had to paddle. Another raft floated along with us on the Canyon Run, where the guests just hold on while the guide does all the heavy lifting. BUT did you really raft if you don’t paddle? We’ll let you decide. Either way, we highly recommend experiencing the Nenana River.
You’ll be on the water for about 2 hours and 3-4 hours total including pickup, instruction, and gearing up. They provide all the equipment you need, including dry-suits since the water stays cold year round, transportation to and from your hotel, and experienced river guides.

2. See the Big 5
Out of the Big 5, the only ones we didn’t see was the last one.
Caribou / Reindeer
Dall Sheep – look for a white dot
Grizzly Bears – look for a golden bail of hay
Moose – look for a large brown mass
Wolves
More Denali Animals to Look Out For: Collared pika, coyotes, golden eagles, hoary marmot, lynx, porcupine, red fox, snowshoe hare, wolverines, and more. See the full list here.
400 mm on a crop sensor. Unless you’re lucky, most of the animals are far away. Keep in mind that it’s not a zoo, and you’re never guaranteed to see wildlife. We’ve been to plenty of national parks where we didn’t see much, meanwhile, everyone and their moms would have epic sightings. This was by far our luckiest trip for seeing wildlife.
3. The Tundra Wilderness Tour
When: June – September 2 Time Needed: 7-8 Hours Distance: 63 Miles to Stoney Hill Overlook then Back
We rode both the narrated bus and a shuttle bus, and actually recommend both if you have the time. The Tundra Wilderness Tour is great because you have more time to see wildlife and our driver was insanely good at spotting wildlife. They even have a camera where they can zoom in so you can see them closer on the bus monitors.
During the tour, the driver shared the history of Park Road and stopped at every opportunity to see wildlife, where you had plenty of time to take photos and watch them in their natural habitat. When Denali is visible, you also get some of the best views of the mountain. The bus stops roughly every .5 hours for bathroom breaks and to stretch your legs.
There are 3 Interpretive Bus Tours with different itineraries. All tours stop every .5 hours for restroom breaks and offer either a snack or full lunch.
Denali Natural History Tour (4.5-5 hr, 30 mi one way) – History of humans in the park
Tundra Wilderness Tour or Toklat Shoulder Season Tour (7-8 hr, 63 mi one way) – Focus on wildlife
Kantishna Experience Tour (-2 hr, 92 mi one way) – Focus is on the landscape. Out of the 3 interpretive bus tours, this is the only one that takes you to the end of the Park Road, the only one that stops at Eielson Visitor Center, and the only one with an Interpretive Ranger from the National Park Service that joins you at Wonder Lake.
4. Triple Lakes Trail Interpretive Hike
When we go on our own, we miss a lot of details because we’re focused on getting to the destination or worried about running into wildlife. The Triple Lakes Trail Interpretive Hike was a great way to learn more about the boreal forest, where to keep an eye out for wildlife, and the best vantage points.
Our guide tailored the hike to what we were interested in, helped us stay on pace, and answered questions about the local flora and fauna. He also gave us suggestions on other hikes to check out and places in town we should stop by.
5. Denali Flightseeing Tours
These views were jaw-dropping. The mountains went on forever, and you get to soar above the clouds for better chances to see Denali.
Denali Air navigates through the park through their small aircrafts giving you views of mountains, glaciers, and even Denali up close. Our pilot pointed out the different basecamps of the mountaineers too.
During our trip, it was amazing to see the park from land, water, and air.
6. Meet the Canine Rangers at the Denali Kennels + Sled Dog Demonstrations
If you love dogs, this is a must! Denali National Park is the only park that uses sled dogs, and these canine rangers have worked alongside their human counterparts since the 920s.
The kennels are roughly 3 miles into the park and open year-round. During the summer, you can stop by to meet the pups and watch a sled dog demonstration. During the winter, the dogs and rangers are frequently in the park, so be sure to check at the visitor center before making your way to the kennels.
7. Stony Hill Overlook (Mile 62)
his was our favorite view of Denali and the last stop on our Tundra Wilderness Tour. When we took the transit bus out to Wonder Lake, we were hoping we might make a stop here again, but since the Eielson Visitor Center is just a few miles past this, the driver didn’t bother stopping here.
8. The Eielson Visitor Center (Mile 66)
If you only do one thing in the park, visit the Eielson Visitor Center. You get amazing views and see a lot of the park on the way – Josh, Youth Volunteer
The Eielson Visitor Center is only open in the summer and has great views of Denali on clear days. There are daily ranger-led programs, a small gallery of art, and has some of the few established trails in the park.
9. Murie Science and Learning Center
The Murie Science and Learning Center is also Denali’s winter visitor center. Check out exhibits and learn how to be better stewards of national parks in Alaska.
0. Wonder Lake (Mile 84.5)
Wonder Lake is a popular campground with 28 sites and the closest to Denali (although it’s still 26 miles from the mountain). Our initial plan was to come up here to find Reflection Pond, which is next on the list, but since clouds covered Denali by the time we were here, we decided to enjoy the lake for a bit then head back.
bug nets.
. Reflection Pond (Mile 85.3)
Photographers love Reflection Pond. As its name implies, you can get beautiful photos of Denali and Foraker reflecting off the surface of the pond. We were bummed that Denali was covered in clouds by the time we got there. Next time, we’ll have to camp at Wonder Lake to take advantage of the morning light and increase chances to see the mountain.
2. Alaska Cabin Nite Dinner Theatre
Enjoy a family-style dinner and show at Denali Park Village. The show shares about the local history through music and humor. Set in the early 900s, the cast is talented and charismatic and they do a great job getting the crowd involved.
3. Old Sourdough Studio
We’ve never taken old-timey photos before, but Alaskan themed old-timey photos? Down! They use authentic clothes, help you get dressed, and make the experience really quick and smooth. Everything in the photo was real except for the snow and husky.
4. Hike the Backcountry
If you want to explore more of the park, much of it is done in the backcountry. Stop by the Wilderness Access Center to get all the info you need about camping and backcountry in Denali. The six million acres are divided into 87 backcountry units (each unit is tens of thonds of acres). 4 of those units have a limit on the number of people allowed to camp each night.
Tips:
Your entire party must be present when obtaining your permit.
You must have a backcountry permit before purchasing a camper bus ticket.
Supplies are limited in the Denali area. Try to purchase items you need before arriving.
Backpacking units are subject to availability. They are only issued the day before or the day of your trip. Your best chances are to arrive at 8am the day before your trip to get your choice in unites.
You will need to complete a backcountry orientation and it will be good for the season. You can even save time by watching the video at the Denali Visitor Center before the day of your permit. Just be sure to document with the park staff that you watched it.
Have a few units picked out ahead of time so you can select the one that is available. You can read more about each unit here.
If it’s your first off-trail backpacking trip, these units are a good starting point: (features a trail), 9-3, 8, 34, and 42.
Read more about how to plan for your trip here.
5. Bike Denali Park Road
Cycling is a great way to see the park plus visitors are allowed to bike all 92 miles of the Park Road. You can check out trip ideas here. More Tips:
You can ride on park roads, parking areas, and campground loops. Bicycles are prohibited on all other trails.
Electric bikes are not allowed beyond the first 5 miles.
Bring your own repair kits.
Eielson Visitor Center at mile 66 is the only place to refill water.
Be aware of wildlife. You cannot cycle faster than a bear (they can run up to 35 mph).
Remember weather can be fickle. Be prepared for all types of weather.

6. Take in the Northern Lights (Winter)
September is my favorite time of year. The weather is perfect, the bugs are gone, and you get a chance to see the Northern Lights. – James, Our Local Hiking Guide
Summer is amazing because you get such long days, but if you visit in the spring, fall, or winter, you also get a chance to see the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights. The sky is usually dark enough starting the second week of August.
7. Win the Road Lottery
Every year, they open the Park Road to the public through a lottery.  Applications run from May -3 and they only award 400 passes each day. If you’re lucky enough to win the lottery for this 4-day event in September, you can drive as far as Wonder Lake (mile 85). Otherwise, you’ll have to join the rest of us via bus. Find more details here.

Fishing – although it’s not a super popular fishing spot because of the glacial silt, you can fish at Wonder lake and a few clear streams that flow into Savage River.
Ziplining

Where to Eat
If you spend all day in the park or do the guided tours, bring food with you. We opted to get the sack lunches from the Gold Rush Dining Room (if you do this, you need to order your lunch the day before). By evening, we were so exhausted, we stayed close to home.
Gold Rush Dining Room – We had most our meals here since we stayed at Denali Park Village. They have different menus for lunch and dinner. Our favorite dish was the Pan Seared Alaskan Halibut (we recommend you order it medium if you do get it).
Lucky Miss Saloon – It’s attached to Gold Rush Dining Room. They open until pm so it’s a great option after being out all day.
Denali Thai Food – Some of the best Thai food we’ve had anywhere. I know.. it’s a shocker, and we didn’t believe people until we tried it ourselves. They outdoor seating at the food cart, but we brought it back to our room to hide from the mosquitos.
Cabin Night Dinner Theater – Family-style buffet dinner. They do move you through dinner first so they can get to the show.

I was tagged by @aconitum-napellus Thanks! Sorry for the delay....
**WARNING: I always write too much! Feel free to skip!**
Rules: Answer the 20 questions and tag 20 amazing people you would like to get to know better.
Name: Stephanie Wolfe Yeah, I know. You weren’t asking last name, but I like it enough that as a little girl I wondered how I could find a guy to marry that wasn’t related but had the same last one. I assumed you HAD to get rid of it when you married and I liked it too much to give up. I was so relieved to find out you don’t have to just cause you’re a girlie thing! Then I never got married anyway. LOL
Nicknames: Mom calls me “Flower”, it was “Little Flower” when I was growing up. Pop would call me, when I was upset or whatever, “Teffy Weffy” (usually accompanied by a pat on the shoulder, back or head) My family sometimes calls me “Steffy”
Zodiac Sign: Sagittarius
Height: Good question! My driver’s license has always said 5′ 10″ BUT this has never seemed quite right. I expect thick soles on my shoes for that first license. I suspect 5′ 9″ or even close to 5′ 8″
Orientation: Ah, see I naturally rebel against labeling. I REALLY hate it! This especially the case for something where limited experience makes it hard to be certain about you reaction to all circumstances. So far it has always attraction to males, and males where I found the personality attractive. The personality informs my asthetic judgement, but I can’t be certain it is males because of anatomy  or “masculine” type personalities. My social circle has been small enough in my rural life I can’t say I’ve been “tested” enough to be proven 100%. 90% maybe? Ok, 80%. And while I am sure there catagories for what I feel, I honestly don’t care! LOL
Ethnicity: I’m an American. How about that? Good enough? I don’t really feel any allegiance, only historical interest, about my distant ancestory. I would check “white” on forms, because the relatives I know would call themselves such with ancestory mainly of the Scottish/English/French/Irish/etc. Still I KNOW I have a great great whatever grandfather that was Jewish (and the relatives that try to deny it, he has a star of David on his grave so shut up!) and a Cherokee great great whatever grandmother. But the truth is, who can tell what mix of genetics go into all of us? The human race isn’t made of pure breds but good ol’ mutts!
Serious question though....how long does the USA have to exist before we get catagorized by that instead of where our ancestors came from 400 years ago? (No really, some of my non English ancestors got the land I live on in the 1600s) I love diversity in culture, traditions, race, etc.....I just don’t get using ancestral homelands as a main identifier.
Favourite Fruit: All! LOL I gobble up blueberries and cherries like I can never stop. I love raspberries but they are too expensive to get often. This year I discovered a service berry tree in the woods, so I tried them for the first time. They were incredible and really did have hints of almond flavor like I read. At only five reachable non bird eaten berries I don’t think I can call it my favorite yet.....
Favourite Season: Autumn, though all of them are nice.
Favourite Book Series: I dunno! The fact is I’ve had far too little time to read for years now, so most the books are stand alone. Actually, even as a kid I’d usually not finish a series. (see my mini-me rage when I figured out what the Narnia books were REALLY about). For whatever reason, series where I’ve read every book are very few. I think I have a four book limit! (except Harry Potter since I had to read them aloud to my parents) I always end up ready to move on to something fresh, too busy or just disappointed around that point. I was loving the Thursday Next books, but then I got so busy that the last two ended in the “to read” pile.
Favourite Flower: ooh, tough! I have had an obsession with poppies, but my utter inability to grow them has gotten to me. I adore so much about how dandelions make magical seed heads, grow absolutely anywhere, are completely edible....but they are just so darn yellow, unfortunately. Pretty much it’s whatever flower I’m looking at right now! LOL
Favourite Scent: These are so impossible!! Wisteria flowers in full bloom, the smell of crushed dog fennel, the spices I mix to bake cookies at Christmas, the smell of the wet ropes on our boat at the river, baking bread, (this is really specific) the way it smells on our mountain smells in autumn when it rains...you know I could go on! LOL
Favourite Colour: red, but particularly the rich dark shades like burgundy
Coffee, Tea, or Cocoa: ALL! It depends on my mood, and if I can get Mom to not make endless pots of coffee. Decaf coffee, btw. I really have to be careful about caffeine.
Average Sleep Hours: Not enough!! LOL I always had been an 8hr person, but the last few years have been a mess, 3 hrs one night, 7 the next. I guess 6 is the most common amount.
Cat or Dog Person: BOTH! With six dogs and around a dozen cats I am sooo not picking favorites.
Favorite Fictional Characters: Geez, too many! I have different ones in every book, movie and other fandom, like if you asked favorite Doctor Who character I’d give you about a dozen! LOL Growing up Alice (in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass) and Pippi Longstocking were the two characters I most related to on a primal level, so let’s not turn this into an endless list and go with them.
Dream Trip: An open ended round the world trip with no schedule so you can explore as long as you feel like wherever you go. And not just other countries but some deep sea travel and Antarctica too. A dream trip with offworld travel included might be too much I guess. But whatever, having to ever come back must merely be options and NOT required! LOL
Blog Created: May 2015 (While I was sick with the flu, and clearly too feverish for good judgement! LOL)
Number of Followers: 1,771 but a LOT of them aren’t real. About a dozen of you ever click on anything I post, so I kind of ignore the number.....
I’m supposed tag people. You DO NOT have to do this!!
@runningbarefootthroughtheforest @theramblingrogue @kimikokat @whitexblackrose @omegadalek @lzbarnabas @awesome-beatles-fan
You know what? I’m starting to feel an anxiety about tagging people. Like suppose I tag someone and they hate these things? You never can tell how people will feel. One Christmas I gave blank journals to all my family, carefuly selected to have covers to the taste of each and with a note saying they could tear out the pages and use them for their grocery list if they didn’t want to write/draw in them. So what happens? My irate cousin rants at me that she’s sixty years old, she never kept a diary and has no damned intention to start now. She held it against me!!
Anyway, I’ll leave the ones I’ve listed (and may tag the same ones on this other game I’m answering) but you do NOT have to do either of these!!

Roller Coasters and Car Wrecks: Both The Physical and The Emotional Kinds
I’ve recently taken a couple of trips to Six Flags, but those haven’t been the only roller coasters I’ve been on. And I’ve recently been part of or witnessed a few car wrecks. In every instance, these last few months have been absolutely absurd in the most beautifully nerve-racking of ways. For my own well being and sanity, I’ve needed to severely cut my time at Aldi for quite some time. Despite the fact that I’ll be losing about $1000 a month, I’ve now done that. I’m two weeks in to being a part timer. Yet I fear I pushed myself a bit too far for those eight months. The constant lack of sleep has seriously impaired me, yet I continued to push my limits despite countless signs. First off, many months ago, after a gym split shift that started at 5 AM and ended at I-don’t-even-remember-how-late PM, I backed into someone pulling out of a parking space in a Walmart parking lot. It was the most minor accident imaginable, but my insurance company didn’t give a damn. So when it came time to renew, they raised my rates, and I decided to stop carrying collision and comprehension on my 12 year old car. Then a few months back I destroyed two tires after falling asleep at the wheel. That was the most literal of wake up calls, and a $400 mistake. It was really the turning point that made me question how hard I was pushing myself. I’m still grateful that the situation wasn’t much worse. Then again, yesterday, while not paying enough attention while trying to maneuver my way out from a gas station and in to a turn lane through a few lanes of traffic stopped at a light, I took too narrow of a path when squeezing between vehicles and put a nasty scrape across my passenger side rear door and quarter panel when I brushed up against the bumper of a semi. On one hand I was pissed off! Why wasn’t I paying more attention?! It’s either something that’s gonna cost quite a chunk of change to fix, or it’s something that won’t be worth fixing and I’ll just have to stare at my mistake until it’s time for a new ride. On the other I was relieved that the semi driver didn’t care since the rigid metal bumper took pretty much zero damage, so all we did was shake hands and agree that we didn’t need to exchange insurance. So now my car, which looked alright when it moved to California, is in much worse shape these days. The right side alone has taken a rock to the windshield (hey, at least that one wasn’t my fault), some chipped paint on the rear bumper, and now a giant war wound. Like many cars on the road out here, it is beat up. I now joke that it’s my badge that I’m a true Angeleno. But, contrary to how it sounds, my life hasn’t completely been a series of car accidents. It’s had its ups as well. I’m fortunate that my gym job is a pleasure. I absolutely love it, my clients, and the vast majority of my coworkers. I couldn’t imagine a better, more fulfilling job. And just tonight I cemented a promotion by barely squeezing out the required amount of training sales dollars and supplement sales - largely in part thanks to my amazing clients and coworkers who pulled some favors for me to get close enough to those requirements, and me throwing a few hundred down on supplements knowing I will make my money back in the next three months.
But just as I lessened my role at Aldi, I’ve also lost some good clients. While my paychecks have been on the up-and-up, my overall net pay is in a state of flux right now. And if those sales numbers don’t maintain - which they’re trending not to - I take a demotion back to where I was after another three months. So I’m really uncertain on where that roller coaster is heading next. Couple that with the fact that I’m still clearly mentally and physically exhausted from both jobs and the continued effort of trying to make that relationship I was interested in work, I’ve been in a really weird headspace. That physical exhaustion also means that I’ve curtailed my workouts. I haven’t consistently run since my injury around six months ago, and my lifting has been the most inconsistent it’s been since I began this journey a few years ago. I don’t doubt that’s also influenced the uneasy feeling I’ve been having. Most days I’m still filled with chipper whimsy, but I’ve noticed my mood start to swing in less desirable directions. While it’s nowhere near as crippling as it once was, I’ve finally began to feel a normal, acceptable amount of anxiety about my future, which is to be expected from such chaos. I’m actually surprised it took this long. But that small level is actually nice to have again, because it lets me know I’ve crossed my limits. I wish it would have let me know months ago. Maybe then my car - which seems to be more and more representative of my battered psyche every day - wouldn’t have taken the brunt of the damage it has. Maybe this steam of consciousness would be more coherent, and maybe I’d have the energy to proof read it. Then the pinnacle! Tonight we were supposed to celebrate promotions at work by meeting for dinner. Reservations were made around a month ago, but it kept getting pushed back. Finally hitting my goals, I was invited hours before the event. So after putting in a full day at the gym striking out on getting that out of pocket cost of my supplements any lower- because I’m still not that great of a salesman - I picked up another $200 worth of amino acids, creatine, joint flex, and multivitamins, drove over to the place we were supposed to meet... and found out it had closed down a few weeks ago due to a fire. A backup plan hadn’t materialized yet, so being mentally and physically spent, I laughed it off and went home. And on the way home what should I find: a traffic jam. The cause: the same generation Corolla as mine with a crushed front end after rear ending someone on the 5 (see again I’m a true Angeleno because I don’t call the interstate I-5 anymore). I’ve had some pessimistic moments. I’ve laughed. I’ve cried. I’ve been angry. I’ve been desperate. I’ve questioned whether or not moving here was the right choice. Yet, despite all of my turmoil and absurdity, there are constant reminders that things could always be worse. My place of employment didn’t burn down and while my car may be unsightly, it is still drive-able. Thanks to killing myself with two jobs, I’ve nearly replaced all the money in my savings that I blew through to get established. Overall, I remain predominately optimistic. My roller coaster has the potential to be heading up. I’ll be making around $4 more per hour when training clients, which equates to around $22/hr. I’m coaching an all-time high of 7 Gold’s Burn classes a week, which gets me $32/hr. I’m getting more full nights of sleep, which is the thing I need the most. I’ve got more free time. I’ll have most weekends off. I went for a run today with a client and her husband - the one who I resigned that put me literally $10 over my sales goal. (As a thank you I bought her some protein powder.) I’m hoping I can make those runs a semiweek(end)ly occurrence with a few clients/friends. I’ll have more time to catch up on video games, a month’s worth of Conan episodes that I haven’t watched, and a few other shows. And despite a few missed opportunities on previous invites, I might have finally talked Lisa into coming to Six Flags with me and our mutual friend on July 10th. And maybe we’ll hit the water park later next month. When I went to Six Flags last weekend, one roller coaster was shut down almost the entire day. But it reopened just before close. We hopped in line, got all the way to the front, literally waiting to be the next to hop on... And then a car got stuck on the climb... We waited while they tried to fix it,and watched as the next person-less test car got stuck again. Many people behind us left. But in the end we stayed, they got it up and running, and we got to ride arguable the best ride there.
That’s me: I push through shit, stubbornly. I’m determined. I’m always looking to move forward. When I want to hit a goal for a half marathon, I do so at the expense of my ligaments. When I hit a curb, I don’t put the car in reverse. I just run it over. When I start to hear my car door scraping against a semi, instead of stopping I just let it scrape the whole way. It’s not always the smartest decision - clearly. Had I stopped, fixing a single small blemish on the door would have been a relatively cheap repair. But in other, not-car-destroying related instances, it can be a benefit. Life is fucking weird, and that’s why it’s fun. It reminds me of a snippet from a song I fell in love with that I found not long ago, Incandenza by Waking Aida. I posted it before, but it bears repeating: “When you open your hands to catch and wind up with only blisters and bruises; when you step out of the phone booth and try to fly and the very people you want to save are the ones standing on your cape; when your boots will fill with rain, and you'll be up to your knees in disappointment. And those are the very days you have all the more reason to say thank you. Because there's nothing more beautiful than the way the ocean refuses to stop kissing the shoreline, no matter how many times it's sent away. You will put the wind in winsome, lose some. You will put the star in starting over, and over. And no matter how many land mines erupt in a minute, be sure your mind lands on the beauty of this funny place called life" - Sarah Kay
That poem eviscerates my soul for so many reasons. It exemplifies the last few years of my life perfectly. It reduces me to tears - happy tears. I honestly have no clue where this roller coaster is headed, but I’m enjoying the ride, the people I’m riding it with, and all its ups and downs. If you’ve made it this far into this post, or even just cared enough to skip to the bottom, thank you for being in my life. Thanks for the encouragement. Thanks for laughing with or at me. Thanks for inspiring me. I hope you see life through the same glasses I do. If I can give you but one thing, I hope it’s that childlike optimism.
